The early and reliable detection of the self-heating of combustible substances in mines is of considerable importance to the mining community. This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a variety of studies of incipient combustion and its detection. Heated samples of coal, wood, and various polymers were used to evaluate the relative sensitivities of several types of detectors. The laboratory results indicate that submicrometer particulate detection is the most universal and sensitive method. Carbon monoxide detection was as sensitive as submicrometer particulate detection for pyrolyzing coal but was relatively insensitive to pyrolyzing wood or plastics. The conventional type of ionization smoke detector was the least sensitive for coal and of intermediate sensitivity for wood and plastics. Self-heating experiments with Pittsburgh seam coal piles of varying particle sizes gave ignition temperatures of 170° C for 4-to 7-µm dust, which increased monotonically with particle size. The measured heating rates were compared with data from an adiabatic calorimeter to obtain preexponential rate constants. The preexponential rate constants varied linearly with the surface area per unit mass of sample as would be expected for heterogeneous surface oxidation. The propagation behavior of ignition waves and the overall self-heating appears to depend critically on the magnitude of the convective flows induced, which counteract the depletion of oxygen in the void spaces of the pile. Classical theories of thermal ignition require substantial modification to be applied reliably to such cases.

A numerical proceeding of corrections with respect to topography is worked out for places near the station and a graphical one for the remote parts of the terrain. The description is clear and very detailed. The numerical proceeding is very similar to that of the Eötvös and Schweydar methods which are in use already. In both methods the levelling is accomplished in certain circles and fixed azimuths around the station. While, in using the Eötvös method, the height differences are directly inserted into the final formulas with regard to the foot of the instrument and in case of accurate formulas derived by Schweydar the height differences are calculated with respect to the center of gravity of the attachment, Numerov introduces functions A and B, the heights, of the terrain and of the center of gravity, which are to be inserted into the formulas.

The general positions of the absorption maxima of aqueous solutions of the violet and green isomers of chromic sulfate the visible spectral region have long been known, but, to the knowledge of the writer, no comprehensive studies have ever been made. To gain further knowledge concerning these inorganic complexes and to investigate the possibilities of developing an analytical method for determining the concentrations of the violet and green isomers in a mixture, a more complete investigation was made in the spectral range from 325 to 850 millimicrons.

The Government of the United States annually expends approximately $8,000,000 for coal. Prior to 1906, this coal was purchased mainly on its reputation, or trade name, rather than under contracts specifying the heating value of the coal, its contents of ash and moisture, and other characteristics. In recent years the Government and other large consumers have appreciated more and more the desirability of definitely determining by chemical analyses and tests the character and quality of coal deliveries. Studies of engineroom and boiler-room efficiencies and economies point forcibly to the necessity of devoting more thought to the improvement of the boiler-room end. This calls for an intimate knowledge of the character and quality of the fuel used. The analyses and tests of delivered coal furnish such data, whereby the power-plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the coal and on the conditions of plant operation. Under authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for analyzing and testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the headquarters of the Bureau of Mines, 'Washington, D. C., where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased for Government use are analyzed and tested. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications,a that is, by contracts that make definite requirements regarding the heating value of the coal expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analysis. Under many of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal offered, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled and analyzed to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor, and if it is not, the price to be paid is decreased in proportion; but if the coal is of higher quality, the price is proportionately increased. The analyses of coals or the guaranties offered by the bidders may in some cases be used for determining the award of a contract, but if the coals offered are of widely different characteristics, it may be difficult to determine which would prove the cheapest fuel, without having their relative evaporative efficiencies. Hence, it may be necessary to conduct evaporative tests under service conditions in order to determine which coal is particularly adapted for successful and economical use in the plant. But once a particular coal is selected, regardless of the procedure of determining the award of a contract, then the greatest advantage of the specification method is realized, in that it guarantees to the purchaser coal of uniform character and quality, thereby insuring the best results in the plant. The cost of purchases, under such specifications, of fueL for the use of the Government now aggregates approximately $4,100,000 per annum, and the cost of additional fuel for which samples are taken and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for analysis in order to determine the character and quality of the coal furnished aggregates some $3,000,000 per annum more. In fact, information is now obtained regarding the quality of fuel purchased on almost all contracts large enough to warrant sampling and analysis and heatingvalue tests. It may be said that the purchase of coal under specification is still in the stage of evolution and development, and that experience and time will be required to develop fully standard specifications and methods of sampling and analysis that may be used universally. The success of the specification method for the purchase of coal and the reliability of analysis now rests almost entirely on sampling.a Improper sampling leads to controversies, with resulting condemnation of the specification method in general and the value of laboratory analyses and tests in particular. A number of bulletins b have been published showing the results of the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications. This bulletin is a compilation of the results of coal analyses by the Government, including those made in the fiscal years 1908-1910, which have been previously published, and later analyses representing coals analyzed during the fiscal years 1911-1915. The preceding bulletins gave individual analyses or average monthly analyses, whereas this bulletin gives the average analyses only for the entire contract. It is hoped that this compilation of a series of comparable analyses of the coals purchased by the Government will be of value alike to coal dealers, to Government engineers, to purchasing agents, and to all users of coal.

Vermiculites are secondary minerals formed by the: alteration of biotite and philogopite mica and are associated with basic rocks such as dunites, serpentines, and pyroxenites. Vermiculite was first described by T. H. Webb in 1824. It remained a mineralogical curiosity until 1913, when the first commercial deposit was discovered in the Turrett mining district of Colorado. Expanded or exfoliated vermiculite was first marketed in 1915 from a deposit in this district 5 miles southeast of Hecla, Colo. This activity was brief, but successful and continuous commercial development began in 1921 in Montana. Noise generated by continuous mining machines in underground coal production is an important health hazard. Bureau of Mines Contract J0387229 covers investigation of this noise through laboratory tests of simulated cutting operations and through in-mine noise measurements. The results of these investigations indicate that coal cutting noise and conveyor noise are dominant sources of mining machine operational noise. Typical noise levels for both cutting and conveying operations are approximately 97 dBA (decibels A-weighted). For full operation of all machine systems, the overall sound pressure level is approximately 101 dBA. In-mine and laboratory test results show excellent agreement in both A-weighted overall levels as well as in A-weighted one-third-octave band spectra.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the dimensional changes of ceramic materials exposed to acid environments to evaluate construction materials for emerging technology in chemical and metallurgical processes. Six commercial ceramic materials (two red shale, two fireclay, one silica, and one silicon carbide (SiC» were exposed to H20, 20 and 30 wt pct HCl, 40 and 60 wt pct HN03, and 10 and 50 wt pct H2S04 at temperatures from 50° to 90° C for 300 days. Linear expansions ranged from a low of -0.02 pct for the silica to a high of 0.45 pct for the red shale. A general ranking of the volume expansion of the materials tested, (from high to low), is as follows: high-porosity red shale A and fireclay B » low-porosity red shale B and fireclay A > silicon carbide and silica. A general ranking (largest to smallest) of the effect of exposure environments is HCl > H2S04, HN03 > H20. An autoclave test method was evaluated. Data obtained from 8-to 24-h exposures were compared with data obtained from the 300-day exposures. The relative expansion trends were similar, indicating that this method could be used as an accelerated test.

"The art of treating ores by the chloride volatilization process is still in the experimental stage. The process has not been sufficiently developed along chemical and metallurgical lines to state definitely just what place it will occupy in the metallurgical industry. The theory upon which the process operates has received the attention of prominent metallurgists for the past twenty years, and research and experimental work has been conducted by many investigators.Much of the experimental work done has never been published, and it seems that the accumulation of such results if made known would be an important aid to the further development of the process. The object of this paper is, therefore, to bring salient features of the process to the attention of the metallurgical industry, both for the purpose of furnishing information, and receiving from interested parties any comments which the reading of this article may suggest. A bulletin covering the work done at the Intermountain experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, situated at Salt Lake City, Utah, is in course of preparation.The chloridizing roast is usually accompanied by appreciable losses due, to the volatilization of the metals as chlorides during the roast, these losses often running as high as 30 per cent, depending upon the temperature, the character of the ores and the associated gangue material. It was not until 1891 that Croasdale, (Croasdale, Stuart, Engineering and Mining Journal, Aug. 29 1903) by observing this and stack deposits from the chloridizing roast, recognized the possibility of making volatilization a major instead of a minor feature of the roast. He then made tests on a large number of tires from different, localities, the result of which showed the, general application of the process. The main difficulty, as stated, by Croasdale, was the lack of a suitable means for recovering the fume from the furnace gasesIn 1913, Cottrell (See Mining and Scientific Press, March 29, 1913; alsoTrans. A method is described for controlling instability in finite-difference computations of liquid saturation near the borehole of a recovery well. Differences of pressure-and saturation-dependent variables are indexed offcenter, upstream and downstream alternately, to provide a stabilizing average. It was found that size of the time step could be increased by a factor of 4 without loss of numerical stability. Finite differences of the variables occur in a variety of relative numerical sizes and combinations. Those relationships of the differences that contribute to instability may be identified by the computing program in which they occur and modified to assist convergence of the computations and execution of the partial differential equations of liquid and gas flow.

Unfortunate occurrences resulting in injuries, loss of life, and destruction of property by explosion, fire, and other mishaps during shaft sinking focused the attention of the Bureau of Mines on the need for safety standards For such operations. Information Circular 7810 was published to meet that need. The current revision updates and replaces IC 7810. Several States have some rules and regulations applicable to local conditions, and several Bureau publications (including some now out of print) cover the hazards that may be encountered in shaft sinking. Certain requirements of the Federal Mine Safety Code and Federal Coal Mine Safety Act may be applied, but there are no definite, uniform standards that will guide those desiring to sink a shaft safely and bring about uniform safety inspections.

The solubility of 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane (TBE) in water was determined from 1.0° to 97.0° C. The solubility (S) of TBE in grams of solute per 100 grams water was correlated with [S = 1,920.55 [exp (40292L7 11, T2 10 T 737.577 + 9.923962 ] where T is in degrees Kelvin. A thermodynamic analysis conducted on a system consisting of a TBE phase and a water phase in equilibrium with a vapor phase led to the calculation of the activity coefficient, vapor-liquid equilibrium distribution coefficient, relative volatility, and heat of mixing for saturated solutions of TBE in water. Data required for these calculations were the solubility of TBE in water and the vapor pressures of TBE and water as a function of temperature.

Relatively pure aluminum nitride (AIN) recently has been prepared in sufficiently large amounts to permit a variety of experimental studies.4/ Several mechanical and chemical properties have been investigated, which show that this substance has good potentialities as a container for liquid aluminum, gallium, and boric oxide. The present work by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to obtain thermo-dynamic data pertinent to the calculations regarding thermal stability and reactivity of aluminum nitride. The following measurements were made: (1) determination of the heat of formation from the elements at 298.15° K.; (2) determinations of the heat capacity over the temperature range 51° to 298.15° K. and the evaluation of the entropy at 298.15° K. therefrom; and (3) determinations of the heat content over the temperature range 298.15° to 1,800° K. These data are combined to obtain free energies of formation from the elements between 298.15° and 2,000° K.

Forced-air cooling of cold-mold arc furnaces for melting zirconium and similar metals has been investigated and found to be practical from the stand-point of heat transfer. It is believed that this technique offers a significant reduction in explosion hazard from that inherent in water cooling, the current industrial practice. A copper crucible, with longitudinal, integral-type fins and with an outer jacket to confine the airstream, appears to be the best general design for air-cooled operation. Cutting the fins into short segments and bending the segments to produce a herringbone effect increased the airstream's turbulence and was found, on test, to increase the heat transfer up to 35 percent.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a new type of scrubber (dust collector) and ventilation system built into the auger support frame (boom) of a Jeffrey 120L continuous mining machine. With this twin scrubber arrangement, one scrubber is mounted into each side of the boom. Each scrubber includes a 2,500-cfm fan, a flooded fibrous-bed scrubber panel, and a water droplet eliminator. The system was designed for minimum size and adds only a few inches to machine height. Exhaust duct design allows flexibility with various airflow configurations to suit both blowing and exhaust fare ventilation systems and brattice distances ranging up to 20 feet. Full-scale tests with exhaust ventilation were conducted at a Mine Safety and Health Administration surface facility at Bruceton, Pa., to determine the scrubbers' methane dilution capability. Several configurations of the twin scrubber-ventilation system produced striking improvements in face methane dilution when compared with conventional systems.

This paper, which describes mining practices at a mine in the Cave- in-Rock, Illinois, fluorspar district, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. Ore deposits in the southern Illinois-western Kentucky fluorspar dis- trict are of two general types (1) the flat-bedded, lenticular replacement and (2) the relatively narrow, rather steeply dipping fault or fissure filling. This paper describes production methods used and results obtained in mining one of the bedded lenticular ore bodies that are prevalent in the northeast portion of the district near Cave-in-Rock.

Mining and reclamation procedures that meet the requirements of SMCRA are illustrated on pages 8 and 9 for each of the three major surface coal mining methods -- area mining, contour mining, and mountaintop removal mining. The three methods involve the same basic steps: clearing the land of trees and other vegetation, removing topsoil and overburden, mining the coal, and reclaiming the land. Although all three methods would not usually occur on any single site, the illustration facilitates comparison of mining and reclamation methods and aids basic understanding of the reclamation processes that take place under SMCRA. Area Mining The area mining method is commonly used to mine coal in the flat to moderately rolling terrain found principally in the western and midwestern states. After the overburden is excavated down to a coal seam, the mining area is enlarged horizontally to expose more coal for removal. In the West, where coal seams are commonly 10 to 20 feet thick (and range up to 100 feet thick in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming), the life of some mines maybe more than 50 years. In the Midwest, coal seams are typically 3 to 7 feet thick and 75 to 100 feet below the surface. Because of the large expanse of area mines and their relatively unrestricted sites, enormous equipment is used to remove overburden and reconstruct the land. The area mining operation in the illustration is on land that was formerly used for farming. The drawing shows that the agricultural use is being reestablished immediately following reclamation. Mining is proceeding across the land toward the left side of the site. The initial excavation was made far enough away from the stream along the right edge of the site to prevent damage to the water supply. The coal under most of the site has been removed, and reclamation has been completed on some of the land. For example, some of the cattle in the foreground and those in the feedlot behind the silo are grazing on reclaimed land that has been mined. At the far left of the illustration, topsoil from the unmined area is being removed by scrapers, transported across the area of active mining, and immediately spread on the land on the right, which is being reclaimed. (Reclamation of mined land as soon as practical, as required by the Act, is called contemporaneous reclamation.) A
