THE object that the writer has mainly in view in presenting this paper is to draw the attention of those connected with the technical side of the industry to the unsatisfactory and by no means up-to-date methods employed in estimating the tin contents of an ore. At the same time, what is regarded, from the writer's personal experience, as a satisfactory and reliable method is explained in detail. It is a curious fact that for the last 25 years tin·assay methods have made little or no advance, while those now in general use ill connection with copper and lead ores can scarcely be compared with those then obtaining, so greatly have they been improved upon. Though it. is not altogether expected that the method herein advocated will at once meet with general approval, the writer hopes the resultant discussion may bring out points that have hitherto escaped detection.FIRE METHODSThe old Cornish method of smelting with anthracite is now obsolete. Particles of a complex nickel sulphide concentrate (containing pyrite, pyrrhotite, pentIandite, and violarite as the major mineralogical constituents) were entrained in a stream of hot gas the temperature of which was varied from 500 to -1000°C. Chemical analysis of the particulates collected from the furnace was used to detect the rapid change in sulphur content which accompanied the ignition temperature jump. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to characterize the oxidized material.These techniques showed that ignition was dependent on the mineralogical composition and occurred over the temperature range 500-900°C. Pyrite ignited first in the range 500-600°C; pyrrhotite was the least reactivemineral and required temperatures in excess of 800°C for ignition. The nickel minerals <pentIandite and violarite decomposed before ignition and ignited at temperatures intermediate to those required for the pyrite and pyrrhotite. The ignition temperature for the pyrite was found to be independent of particle size and concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere.Ignition temperatures determined by the simulated flash smelting method were compared with the results of differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements performed on the same concentrate. Temperaturesdetermined in the DTA test as corresponding to the start of exothermic activity were shown to be at least 100°C below those determined by the simulation test.

Analysis of rock discontinuities, collected using a scanline method, has been undertaken at the Iron Duke open cut mine, on the southern margin of the Middleback Range in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. The iron mineralisation, which is a product of supergene enrichment of carbonate sediments, is located on the W (western) limb of a gently N plunging D2 macrosyncline. Mesofolds plunge shallowly to the NE or steeply to SE, suggesting two shortening events, of which the second produced significant macrofolds. Discontinuities include:faults and shears which display variable orientations, mainly striking WNW dipping steeply N; mesofractures or joints maintaining a well constrained orientation, dipping steeply S, subvertical striking E-W; and bedding surfaces which are folded about a gently N plunging axis. Through this example of the regional control exerted on local discontinuities, it is clear that discontinuities are not randomly distributed as often assumed in purely statistical approaches. Commonly for rocks of any age there is a distinct discontinuity pattern, reflecting the geological deformation history. If the controls exerted on local rock discontinuities can be determined and assigned a number related to their significance, the way forward is available to develop a site specifc knowledge base that can make realistic predictions for any position in a given rock mass. Such a procedure would involve assessment of the regional geology, linked to scanned discontinuities either via manual or automatic means. Recent advances in automatic scanning rock faces (eg by the I-SiTE Laser Radar) to determine discontinuities distributions, enable the rapid calculation of rock characteristics. This is a significant advance in rock engineering, providing a method of safe and quick collection of data. However it creates problems in the presence of an increase in the geotechnical data available, which should be assessed in the context of the regional geology. Although techniques are underway to analyse post-blast discontinuities, the next signifant potential advance in this area could be the integration of a knowledge based system to assess discontinuities ahead of mining, incorporating regional assessment and human intuition.

This paper introduces a new coal-based rotary kiln process of DRI production - the CRIMM process, which is developed by Changsha Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in the past years. Its main features are the use of composite pellets (in rotary kiln). The process consists of preparation of pellets from iron concentrate and coating of coal on their surfaces. The new process is able to overcome a series of defects of the conventional coal-based rotary kiln processes. A continuous test was conducted using an experiment rotary kiln (-0.6;, x 3 m). TFe of the magnetic iron concentrate used in the test is 67.25 per cent. TFe of the product DRI is 88.54 per cent, MFe is 84.11 per cent, S and P are less than 0.02 per cent. The metallisation ratio of pellet is 95 per cent. The pellet power ratio is less than 0.3 per cent. The utilisation coefficient of rotary kiln is 1.3 t/m'-d. The overall recovery of iron concentrates is 99.7 per cent. Two small industrial plants using the CRIMM process are being set up in China. Their coal consumption can be decreased to 520 kg standard coal per ton DRI respectively.

In addition to the geologic risk of a particular project, the criteria that an international exploration company (æIECÆ) utilises when making an investment decision in a particular country should also include a critical analysis of the political, judicial and fiscal regime of the host country. A key investment criteria of an IEC is mineral tenure and the security and continuity of that mineral tenure under the host countryÆs existing legal system as well as the host countryÆs overall legal, political and fiscal framework, the latter of which can affect the projectÆs overall economic viability in a number of ways. The authors, Steve Vaughan and Michael Bourassa of Aird & Berlis, Toronto, Canada, have taken the position that developing an understanding of a countryÆs legal tradition is a crucial first step in analysing the mineral regulatory regime of a particular country. This paper continues their efforts to overview the most recent legal trends affecting the worldÆs mineral industry and attempts to analyse, categorise, compare and contrast differing legal systems, cultural backgrounds and economic philosophies relating to the development of mineral rights in Pacrim countries and the resulting commercial, legal, and political framework which ultimately drives the relevant mineral legislation. For the convenience of organisation of this analysis, the authors have divided the Pacrim countries into four smaller groups, firstly, on the basis of their legal tradition and, secondly, by their geographic location:Common Law Countries: USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; Spanish Civil Code Countries: Mexico, Central America (Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala), South America (Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia). Communist or Former Communist Countries: Mongolia, China, Russia. Countries of the Pacific Southwest: Phillippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Indo-China (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand), Papua New Guinea. The discussion starts with an analysis of the various types of legal regimes, attempts to classify or categorise them, reiterates the necessity for the rule of law and those factors which encourage mineral exploration and development and discusses and recommends the expansion of a practical country competitiveness rating system developed by the Fraser Institute. In addition to the fundamental issue of mineral tenure û what it is and how secure it is û the paper discusses how different legal systems have shaped different approaches taken by individual nations to attract foreign mineral investment. The paper analyses the best practices and experiences accumulated in different Pacrim countries with varying legal traditions and identifies a practical country competitiveness rating system which the authors believe should be expanded to cover all minerally endowed countries. This rating system will permit countries to identify their mineral regime weaknesses and adjust their legal systems to better attract mineral investment and will also permit exploration and mining companies to compare their jurisdictional choices with those selected by their competitors.

Solutions of acetonitrile in water dissolve water soluble copper(I) chloride. Removal of volatile acetonitrile from the resulting solutions, by distillation with low grade steam, precipitates pure copper(I) chloride. This is used to purify a crude copper chloride sublimate from the chlorination of nickel matte but is applicable to other sources of copper(I) chloride. The pure product can be converted to pure copper(I) oxide, copper(II) oxychloride or pure copper metal directly.

The advantages and limitations of the borehole method are outlined, and general principles of plant design are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, attempts have been made to reduce mine development costs by various methods. Some of the, techniques of tunnelling have been adopted in horizontal headings, and in main vertical shafts, mechanical plant has displaced hand labour with notable success. The Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling projects carried out by Crown Minerals provided explorers in New Zealand with a new compilation of historical exploration data combined with new geological information from the GNS QMap 1:250,000 scale mapping project. These data were used to produce predictive mineral potential maps for gold mineralisation in New Zealand. The aim of these projects, to stimulate mineral exploration and investment in exploration, has been successful with eight new companies acquiring new tenement positions and committing significant exploration expenditure to exploring in New Zealand in the coming years. The projects were done at a national scale and consequently not all exploration data were compiled into the prospectivity models. Several of the new companies recognised the value of the prospectivity modelling work and committed exploration funds to continue the modelling process. They recognised a need to compile the remaining data and run the models again to allow detailed exploration targeting. Detailed data compilations including digitising historic exploration stream sediment sample, rock chip sample, soil sample and drilling data has been completed. New models have been completed in Otago for mesothermal gold mineralisation and in the Coromandel and Northland for epithermal gold. The new models have been compared with the original regional scale models and used to target prospect scale exploration. This work has allowed exploration models for epithermal and mesothermal mineralisation in New Zealand to be refined. More importantly this work has identified significant areas with potential to host gold mineralisation with little or no systematic geochemical data including soil sampling or drilling. Exploration work programs have been designed to acquire these missing data and exploration funds have now been committed to test the areas highlighted by the prospectivity modelling. In summary, the Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling work has successfully attracted new investment and ideas to the exploration scene in New Zealand. The projects had an estimated cost of NA$250 000 and will in the next two years, just through exploration expenditure, attract more than NZ$10 M in investment. If a mine is discovered the return on investment will be considerably greater.

THE following notes were accumulated during the years 1905 to 1911, when the writer was employed at Stannary Hills. The writer's duty took him over the underground workings daily. In odd moments the geology of the surrounding country was worked out. As the time for this purpose was limited, many interesting points had to be left, untouched. The faulting system in the mines was of such a puzzling character that it seemed as if the geology of the surrounding district might throw some light on it. Dr Jack, in 1907, reported on these mines for the shareholders, but came to no definite conclusions. Unfortunately, the writer has not had access to this report for many years. At the time of his visit the larger develbpments in the Ivanhoe and, Kitchenen orebodies (see Fig 1, B2) were only being opened up. Mr. H. Herman mentions Stannary Hills on p 320, Proceedings Aust Inst ME, new series, No 14, and on p 326 expresses the opinion that the pipe or joint-veins (as at Irvine bank and Stannary Hills) were more valuable to follow than lodes in the granite in that district.GEOLOGY OF DISTRICTThe main feature of the area mapped is a band of altered sedimentary rocks which carry no fossils. It is a mile wide, and consists of a hard band of greywackes 200 ·t ·300 yds. wide, flanked on both sides by contorted shales which become more micaceous as the granite-area to the east is approached. The strata have a general strike of N. 30° W., with a steep westerly dip. A large area of acid intrusive rocks occurs to the west of this band. All development proposals have to run the gauntlet of the approvals process. Major resource projects are generally subject to particularly intense scrutiny. The key element in the approvals process is that it is about making decisions that take into account the benefits or otherwise to society as a whole - the interests of any one group do not take precedence. Most groups tend to see their relatively narrow interests as representing those of the broader society. Each group develops their arguments for or against a project in isolation, and then presents these to an arbiter in an adversarial situation. From this mire of argument and counter-argument it is often difficult to discern just what the real benefits of a project are, and opportunities for agreement and constructive modification of proposals to meet real concerns are often missed. The contention made in this paper is that the inevitable differences between these various viewpoints should be harnessed to help the proponent to come up with a proposal that is clearly of overall benefit to society and which gains approval. It is better to accept that no one group has a monopoly on wisdom in this area and to engender an environment of creative tension in which the pros and cons can be broadly considered and good planning and design used to produce a proposal that has a high chance of success. There are a variety of ways in which this approach can be implemented. Some of these options will be discussed in terms of their likely applicability to energy projects and their potential for success.

A process was developed to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide, suitable for use in high quality dry cells, from Risdon anode mud. ImpurItIes present In the anode mud were removed prior to the electrolysis which was performed from a manganese sulphate bath using the following conditions.Temp. 95°CH2S04 50-55 g/l.Mn2+ 55-60 g/l.Anode c.d. 10·0 A/sq. ft.Operation under these conditions yielded current efficiency and power consumption figures of 95 per cent and 0·8 kWh/lb respectively. The product conformed to battery manufacturers' specifications as regards physical and chemical properties and performed satisfactorily in a battery testing programme.

The structural variations occurring in pellets of finely divided mixtures of iron ore and coke breeze, metallized by firing at elevated temperatures, have been examined microscopically. For any given pellet composition, time and temperature are the two most important factors in determining the development of the bonding processes.INTRODUCTIONThe success of sintering and pelletizing processes in the agglomeration of fine iron ores for blast furnace use has brought about rapid changes in thinking relative to methods of preparing furnace burdens. Increases in productivity with the use of sinter emphasize the advantages of a stable, uniformly sized furnace feed. Current practice is to produce a self-fluxing sinter containing most of the lime requirements of the furnace incorporated as a stable medium (Figgis and Charker, 1962). The elimination of fine material from the burden allows greater stack permeability and smoother operation.Sintering and pelletizing of iron ores with or without the incorporation of fluxing compounds has conditioned operators to the extent that it is now considered possible that all components of the burden may eventually be beneficiated in one form or another. Investigations are in hand to improve the quality and sizing of coke, which occupies the major part of the burden volume (Callcott, Innes and Brown, 1961; Innes, Gregory and Worner, 1963). Interest is also being revived in methods of pre-reducing iron ores prior to charging to the furnace (Hansen, Melcher and Fine, 1961). This paper describes a new addition to the geostatisticians tool kit developed by one of the renowned leaders in the field to cope specifically with these circumstances. Your Excellency, on behalf of the Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and, indeed, on behalf of everyone present, I extend to you a welcome, and our thanks for your gracious acceptance of the invitation to be here to-day and, later on, to present Honorary Membership Certificates. I also welcome the several official representatives of our Allies, of Great Britain and our sister Dominions.To Messrs. E. C. Driffield and E. J. Rigby, two of the original Foundation Members, who are with us to-day, I extend greetings.The present occasion is opportune to express, on behalf of a representative body of professional men, deep appreciation of the sacrifice which His Majesty the King has made, and will continue to make, by appointing His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester as Governor General of Australia and, therefore, His Majesty's senior personal representative in this country.I suppose, that as the primary reason for our assembly to-day is to celebrate the Fiftieth Year of the Institute's existence, I should properly on this occasion, give an account of its history and development. However, as this subject was ably covered by Mr. L. V. Waterhouse, in his Presidential Address in 1938, I trust I may be excused for selecting some other subject. I shall, therefore, exercise my privilege as President and give you a short history of the Mining and Metallurgical Industry of this country with special reference to its effect on the development of the Commonwealth and on the national economy. I apologize in advance for any statistics which I inflict upon you; some of these will be three or four years out of date, because of censorship restrictions. I shall as far as possible refer firstly to the industry prior to and including 1893, the Institute's foundation year, and then to subsequent development.Australia, is pre-eminently a pastoral and agricultural country and it leads the world in the production of wool. Nevertheless, it has an international reputation as a producer of gold and various metals and of minetal products.The development of gold mining in the decade 1840-50 was an epoch-making event in Australia's history, because, to quote one writer's apt phrase, "it precipitated Australia into nationhood." It was certainly responsible for a rapid increase in population. Thus, during the period 1841-1861 the population of Australia increased fourfold, from 221,000 to 1,170,000.The effect of the discovery of gold in Western Australia was even more striking. I had hoped when the time came for me to address this meeting that gold mining would be in a much happier position than we find it to-day.As it is, and because of the demands of national security, we find this great and valuable primary industry relegated to the background and in danger of temporary extinction.These notes refer mainly to gold mining in Western Australia, whence comes the major portion of Australia's production, and their purpose is to record a brief review of the industry immediately prior to the general disorganization that is following the call-up of men from the mines.During this period of reduced production the loss of comparable statistical data will make it impossible to follow the progress of the industry, and, since the period may be long, it occurred to me that information might be derived from an examination of the trend of recent production that would indicate what may be expected of the industry when full production is resumed in the future.Since the revival of gold mining, which started in 1931, most of the old-established mines have reorganized and, in some cases, completely renewed and enlarged their equipment in order to achieve maximum production, and old mines hitherto unpayable have been re-opened and equipped. At the same time large sums have been spent in scientific prospecting and in search for new mines, and it is safe to say that at the end of 1939, when gold production reached its peak, practically every known mine in Western Australia that could be worked profitably was in production.During this period the number of men employed in the industry rose from 5,961 in 1931 to approximately 15,000 in 1939. From the outbreak of war in 1939 to the end of 1941 the output from the mines was maintained at full pressure, maximum tonnage beingrecorded in 1940, although a reduction in the grade of ore treated caused a slight falling off in gold production.During 1941 there was a. fall in both tonnage and grade. The decline in tonnage was due partly to the closing of the Lancefield and Mount Magnet mines, and partly to the shortage of labour brought about by the response of the goldfields to the call for men for the fighting services, the average number of men in the industry in this year being reduced to 12,929.With the entry of the United States into the war in December last and the pooling of the resources of the allied nations, the need for gold as a purchasing medium passed, and with its passing there arose the demand for the transfer of the man-power engaged in gold mining to other fields of industry directly connected with the war effort.There was a ready response by those connected with the industry who...

Precrusher stockpiles are designed principally as buffers to decouple the mining and processing operations. They are usually paddock dumped or dumped over a face to form fingers by dumping haul truckloads and reclaimed by front-end loader in an ad hoc manner. In addition, they are often not built and reclaimed to completion but continually added to and extracted from. While this design suits the mining process and is operationally simple, there can be little confidence in the grade of the ore that is fed to the crusher. This makes short-term grade control difficult and reconciliation back to the mine face imprecise. Well-designed and operated precrusher stockpiles can overcome these deficiencies.The different types of grade variability in mining are reviewed in this paper. The role of precrusher stockpiles in reducing short-term variability is discussed and their ineffectiveness in addressing long-term variability is highlighted. Their role in removing the serial correlation of the extracted ore is explained.Precrusher stockpiles carry out the four, at times competing, objectives of storing, buffering, blending and grade separation. Their actual design and operation result from a compromise between these four competing roles. These roles are explained in detail along with the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of precrusher stockpiles. The recommended blended-in blended-out stockpile (BIBO) design is discussed in detail. Matched pairs of BIBO stockpiles of limited tonnage built and reclaimed to completion retain the best knowledge of grade and facilitate the reconciliation process.Simulation studies have been carried out on BIBO stockpiles to understand the blending opportunities of the different options for building and reclaiming, and to identify the methods that achieve maximum blending. It was found that laying down rows in one direction and reclaiming across these rows gives the best blending. Matching the width of the reclaim face with the daily crushing requirements is also important. The Gosowong epithermal Au-Ag deposits, located on the island of Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, are owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, a joint venture between Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (25 per cent).The Gosowong deposit was a greenfields discovery in 1994. Subsequent brownfields discoveries, most recently in 2009, have resulted in a total endowment of more than 6 Moz Au. The three main deposits include Gosowong, Toguraci and Kencana, and as of December 2013, production comprised 5.7 Mt Au at 24 g/t for 4.3 Moz with remaining resources of 4.2 Mt Au at 13 g/t for 1.7 Moz.Mineralisation primarily occurs in multistage veins, breccias and stockwork veins, with at least four texturally- and mineralogically-distinct vein events, including: banded crystalline quartz, quartz-adularia, quartz-chlorite and quartz-sulfide stages. Vein mode, texture and mineralogy are zoned around areas of maximum dilation, vein width and vein grade. Within banded quartz-chlorite, grades of >1000 g/t Au are common. Anomalous Au-Ag-Pb-As-Sb-K-Li geochemistry in rocks is commonly associated with the epithermal mineralisation. Four major types of hypogene alteration are recognised at Gosowong: silicification (quartz-illite-adularia-pyrite) within the immediate vein zone, argillic (illite-quartz-pyrite) alteration enveloping the vein zone, advanced argillic (dickite-kaolinite-quartz) alteration above and adjacent to the vein zone and within the overlying Kayasa Formation, and propylitic (chlorite-epidote-albite-calcite-pyrite) alteration within the footwall and distal to the vein zone.CITATION:Fitzpatrick, N, Harris, A, MacCorquodale, F and Wardiman, D, 2015. Process control limitations have led to suboptimal performance of the crushing section of Sishen MineÆs Jig Plant. The performance of the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller implemented during commissioning was hampered by the relatively small buffer capacity between the crushers and screens. The inability to maintain the tertiary crushing chamber under full choke conditions lead to inefficient crushing and reduced crusher product cubicity.Model predictive control (MPC) was implemented in the tertiary crusher plant in May 2012 and resulted in a throughput improvement of six per cent in its first month. The controller was further optimised and indicated a throughput improvement of 16 per cent during on/off testing in July 2012. The throughput improvement is attributable to the finer crusher product resulting from operating the crusher under full choke conditions and controlled feed rate to the tertiary crusher plant screens. The next step is to couple the model predictive controller, automated gap control system and an economic optimiser to ensure maximised throughput and value from the resource.CITATION:Leeka, E K, 2013.
