The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of froth fl otation for the recovery of gold from the gravity tailing stream of the former Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) operation in Ballarat. The P80 of the tailings was determined by screen analysis as 1 mm, with test work conducted on as received material along with samples ground to P80 sizes of 47, 78 and 134 microns. Laboratory scale batch flotation tests were conducted at both natural and elevated pH to investigate the impact of pyrite depression on gold recovery. Results indicated that although an increase in grade from approximately 0.7 g/t to 3 g/t was achievable at a natural pH and a P80 of 134 micron, gold recovery was low at just 35 per cent. Finer grind sizes were found to have an adverse effect on both grade and recovery. Future efforts will be focused on the sub 310 micron size fraction of the tailings, which was revealed to contain approximately 85 per cent of the available gold and may be amenable to cyanidation or ultra-fine gravity treatment.

On 30 June 2020, the Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority (the Authority) superseded the Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner as the independent overseer of Victoria’s declared mine rehabilitation. Currently, only the Latrobe Valley’s three brown coalmines are declared, with each mine at a different stage of rehabilitation and closure planning: Hazelwood ceased mining in 2017, Yallourn is scheduled to end mining in 2028 and Loy Yang in 2035. The three declared mines are very large, close together (Figure 1) and present significant environmental risks that must be mitigated during rehabilitation and post closure. In addition to fire risks, the brown coalmines are inherently unstable and require continuous monitoring and management of ground movements and groundwater pressures. Since 2007 several damaging events have occurred, highlighting the difficulties of achieving long-term stability, even with good landform design and rigorous ground control management plans

The iron ore products should be assessed in terms of in-furnace behaviour and overall furnace performance, their operation should also be optimised under industry-scale blast furnace (BF) conditions, in order to be sustainable and competitive, especially in the context of decarbonisation efforts in ironmaking. While lab and pilot-scale experiments can provide useful kinetics, they are expensive and risky and cannot replicate industry-scale blast furnace conditions for proper assessment and optimisation. In this paper, we review our recent progress at Shen Lab of UNSW in using state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to assess iron ore products and examine the effects of their operations on BF behaviour in basic terms, including in-furnace phenomena (flow field, temperature field, species distribution fields etc) and overall BF performance (coke rate, reduction efficiency and top gas temperature etc). We have developed state-of-the-edge CFD models for different purposes, ranging from the static-state BF model featuring unique layered burden structures for offline assessment and optimisation knowledge building-up for iron ore products, to the transient-state BF model for online assessment and optimisation of iron ore productions by describing the transient behaviours of iron ore productions under industry-scale conditions. First, we have studied several iron ore products including the iron ore products used in the present BFs and emerging iron ore products like carbon composite briquette and iron-coke. Second, several iron ore operations are studied including optimisation of conventional burden operations like oxygen enrichment, batch weight tuning and new operations like coke central charging and hydrogen injection in BFs. Third, some time-sensitive operations are also investigated including the use of wet burden materials and the drop in blast temperature on BF performance. These CFD models offer cost-effective research tools for understanding the effect of iron ore products on BF performance and serve as a reliable marketing tool for existing and emerging iron ore products under a wide range of BF conditions.

The gas dispersion properties that are the subjects of this communication include three measured parameters, gas superficial velocity (gas rate), gas holdup and bubble size, plus derived parameter, bubble surface area flux. Over the past ten years sensors to measure these parameters have been introduced and those originating from McGill University are briefly described. The sensors have seen extensive use in plant campaigns and experiences on four cell types at three sites are discussed. The impact of frother in controlling bubble size by retarding coalescence is illustrated, introducing the need to understand chemistry/machine interactions in interpreting gas dispersion results. An increase in Sauter mean bubble size (D32) with superficial gas velocity (gas rate, Jg) was found, which followed the empirical relationship where Do ~ 0.5 - 0.6 mm and C and n are fitted parameters dependent on the system (machine and chemistry). Following this trend in Db - Jg, consistent bubble surface area flux (Sb) - Jg trends are also observed. The trend in Sauter mean versus number mean (D10) is used to help interpret the nature of the distribution; as the means approach numerically, the distribution is narrowing. Analysing gas holdup versus gas rate shows both a dependence on location in the cell as well as cell position in a bank, factors which must be accounted for when comparing data from different plants and circuits. The instrumentation and methodologies being developed are presenting new opportunities for incorporating cell hydrodynamics into metallurgical diagnostics. A case study at one plant serves as illustration.

This paper reports a computational study using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in a mine ventilation system. Ambient air is injected to a rectangular mine drive through a circular duct. Moisture evaporates from shaft wall depending on flow properties of air in the drive-duct system. The physical process involves simultaneous momentum, heat and mass transfer. A species transport equation is employed to account for the moisture concentration in air. The momentum equation is solved using standard k- model, while energy and species transport equations are solved using standard expressions for moisture evaporation rate and heat flux from the drive wall. The aim of this paper is to investigate effectiveness of CFD simulation in relation to mine ventilation in a drive where a significant mass transfer phenomenon occurs. Results from simulation are compared with existing data from a site in Victoria.

Reconnaissance geochemical exploration in the vicinity of low angle detachment faults which bound the core of the Paparoa metamorphic core complex yielded Au up to 14 ppm, with 35% of greywacke, granitoid and quartz vein samples in the northern range exceeding the 0.01 ppm detection limit. Au is associated with Ag, As, Sb and Cu anomalies consistent with epithermal-type mineralisation. The Ag and Cu anomalies also distinguish this mineralisation from older, mesothermal Au deposits widespread in the Ordovician 'slate belt' greywackes, which comprise much of the upper plate of the core complex. Baryte, molybdenite, fluorite and stratiform U mineralisation in the northern Paparoa Range may also be related to hydrothermal activity along the detachment fault zones.

Research cruises by HMNZS 'Tui' (1986) and RV 'Moana Wave' (1987) investigated the geology, geophysics and seafloor mineral resources of Manihiki Plateau in the central Pacific Ocean.Manihiki Plateau is a large (500,000 km2) mid-ocean platform that rises 3000 m above the abyssal plains of surrounding ocean basins (depth -5500 m). Its foundation evolved about 112 Ma ago by massive outpouring of basaltic lavas at a plate triple junction. The plateau is blanketed by a 900 m thick sedimentary section comprising (i) mid-Late Cretaceous volcaniclastic sandstones / siltstones grading upwards to limestones / chalks and (ii) -500 m of Tertiary nanno-foram chalks and oozes. Cores from DSDP 317 drill-site on the Manihiki High Plateau indicate that the volcaniclastic sediments contain native copper and some thin beds rich in organic carbon.

Queensland Mines Limited operates a small uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek in the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve, some 265 km due east of Darwin. It was the wish of the local Aboriginal people that the ore be treated over an eight year period and that no township be constructed in Arnhem Land. Due to these wish- es it was decided to house employees and their families in Darwin and fly the employees to the minesite for work rosters. A singleman's style camp only was constructed at Nabarlek. To satisfy the Aboriginal people's wishes all recreation time is spent offsite thus lead- ing to a roster system whereby employees spend three distinct periods of 6, 6 and 4 days on- site, broken by recreation periods of 3, 4 and 5 days in Darwin, during each 28 day period. Employees are divided into four opposing rosters, which allows at any given time for approximately half the workforce to be onsite and the other half on rest and recreation leave in Darwin. This method of staffing has generally proved to be most satisfactory although at times problems arise, in terms of both product- ion and social effect not normally encountered when operating within more conventional circum- Stances.

WMC Fertilizers (WMCF) operates a Beneficiation Plant at Phosphate Hill in Queensland, Australia. The plant consists of two-stages of crushing, followed by a wet scrubbing and desliming circuit. Ore is then fed to a tertiary crusher and a milling/classification circuit, with the final product going to a swing-lift thickener and storage tanks. From the slurry storage tanks, the phosphate rock is fed to a horizontal belt filters which dewater the phosphate rock ahead of a hemi-hydrate phosphoric acid plant. The water soluble recovery of phosphate in the phosphoric acid plant is dependent on the moisture content in the filter cake, as this governs the wash water addition to the hemi-hydrate filters. Since commencement of operation, the moisture content of the filter cake fed to the phosphoric acid plant has been higher than design reducing the phosphoric acid plant recovery and at times reducing the throughput through the phosphoric acid plant. The moisture content in the filter cake can be decreased by reducing the generation of fines in the milling and classification circuit (classified as û38 micron material). This paper identifies the causes of fines generation in the Phosphate Hill beneficiation plant. It discusses the options that were assessed to minimise fines generation, and outlines the results to date of circuit changes undertaken at Phosphate Hill.

The Australian minerals sector has a shortage of skilled professionals to satisfy an industry that is experiencing renewed vitality. Graduate numbers are low throughout Australia and the world, while economic rationalisation is seeing many educational institutions downsize, or even close, their minerals-related programs. In addition to requiring more entry-level graduates, minerals producers are looking to update the skills of their current workforce to keep up with the industryÆs continuing technological revolution. To address the issue the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) endorsed collaboration between several Australian minerals producers and a team of universities to generate the Mineral Tertiary Education Council, or MTEC. MTEC recently initiated a venture to increase the availability of professionals with relevant skills to the minerals industry. Primarily aimed at delivering postgraduate programs, the initiative will allow graduates from other disciplines to æconvertÆ to the minerals sector as well as provide professional development training to an existing work force. This venture represents a novel approach in that courses will be delivered by more than one institution and will employ innovative teaching materials with flexible and remote delivery formats. The programs will cater specially for professional development in the minerals sector, which generally requires high flexibility due to the nature of work conditions and locations.

Stress Mapping Technology is aproprietary technique developed to target epigenetic mineralisation located in dilatant (low stress) sites. It is a computer based technique, based on rock mechanics principles and stress-strain relationships, which seeks to transform strain data, in the form of a solid geology map, to stress data.The main assumptions in the conceptual model are that:The strain pattern of faults and lithological contacts have not been changed since mineralisation i.e. that ore formation is late in the structural history.Stress orientations and magnitudes are known.Rheological properties of faults and rock units can be deduced.The 2D geometric and rheological data is then treated by a mathematical technique which permits the geometry of the elements to be defined by the spacing and orientation of the discontinuities in the rock mass.

Subsurface development requires some geotechnical conditions and challenges. Most of then are related to the compatibility between tunnelling system and surrounded ground conditions, and design criteria. Design criteria usually involve lining pressure and ground control of displacements. In order to fulfil these requirements, geotechnical parameters have to be obtained as well as construction aspects have to be taken into account for predicting the tunnel behaviour. The Brasilia Metro is presented as a case history illustrating the geotechnical conditions and challenges for its implementation. It is 42 km long, including tunnels excavated in collapsible porous soils by the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. The Brasilia porous clay presents some characteristics, which may lead to large deformations due to structural collapse. Empirical methods were calibrated for collapsible porous soils and then applied to predict tunnelling-induced settlements. Settlements due to soil structural collapse modify completely the expected settlement profile, increasing their values from the tunnel crown to the ground surface. Consequently, surface settlement trough volumes were also greater than the ground losses around the tunnel. In this case history, structural collapse of porous soils played an important role and must have been taken into account to predict correctly the settlement trough and profile. Numerical simulation has shown that settlement magnitudes due to structural collapse are strongly dependent on the soil stiffness reduction after collapse and the extent of the collapsible zone.

Mining is still a significant economic activity within the Hauraki District. The Martha project is particularly significant. Estimates are that in the order of 850 direct and indirect jobs are derived as a consequence of the Martha project within the Waikato Region. The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) is New Zealand's primary piece of environmental legislation. It sets out to provide the framework for the control of the use, development and protection of almost all physical and natural resources. Minerals are excluded from the sustainability requirements of the legislation but as mining invariably involves the use of land, all the other elements of RMA apply. The Council's role in dealing with mining changed with the introduction of RMA. It became responsible for administration of those matters that fell within the functions set out in section 31 of the RMA in respect to existing authorisations. Mineral development needed to be considered in the development of the District Plan that the Council is required to prepare. Implementation of the Act has been a challenge for not only local government but for many industries and resource users since it came into force in 1991. There have been, and are, differing views on both the way it is administered and its intent. The Hauraki District Council has been at the forefront of some of the challenges that are a consequence of the Act. Its reactions to these challenges have been consistent. It treats mining in the same why it treats any other industry. At times this approach has not been understood and without challenge from sections of the community.

It is no longer possible to establish a quarry on the most convenient hill then abandon the site, leaving a scar if the stone or sand in the deposit is found to be unsatisfactory. Before approval is given to operate a new quarry, the relevant authorities require a detailed plan of operations from commencement to final rehabilitation. To prepare this plan, a thorough know- ledge of the quality and size of the deposit is required. To obtain this information, the industry must use the most modern techniques available. Many examples can be given showing problems which have affected the smooth operation of a quarry for many years because the initial exploration was poorly carried out. The factors which must-be considered when exploring a deposit are detailed in this Paper.

All types of coal are liable to spontaneous combustion to a variable degree according to the inherent characteristics of the coal and also extrinsic factors. In order to successfully extract coal from highly capital-intensive longwall mining operations it is necessary to evaluate and manage any risks that may be present due to spontaneous combustion. A spontaneous combustion risk management plan for longwall mining is described in this paper. This risk management system comprises identification of conditions promoting spontaneous combustion risk, a laboratory or empirical risk classification system, determination of gas ladder, adoption of adequate ventilation plans and gas monitoring systems that will lead to the development of the spontaneous combustion action plan. The risk management system was applied to a greenfield site in NSW in 1992 when prediction of a high-risk category for the coal seam was made. After commencement of production a spontaneous heating problem emerged as predicted. Description of the case history of spontaneous combustion risk management for a longwall operation in this coal seam is included in this paper.

Over the last five years Du Pont (Australia) Ltd has developed a commercial range of new generation emulsion based explosives concurrently with the development of new explosives-placement systems. The paper outlines Du Pont's emulsion technology and history of product development from the initial emulsions (Tovex E & EL) to emulsion/ANFO blends (Tovex BE) through to the most recent development of Du Pont's SOL emulsion component. The paper also outlines the development of materials handling systems on site to load waterproof bulk explosives from the original pumper trucks through to the multipurpose agitator bowl blending and pumping units at the heart of Du Pont's SOL emulsion system currently available within Australia. The last section deals with some of the more important features of enhanced agitator bowl truck designs and outlines examples of the complete SOL emulsion system and methods of operations currently practiced at specific mines within the Bowen Basin coalfields.

There has been an unprecedented rise in the fatality rate in the Australian mining industry over the last few years. The factors behind this rise are not clear; however, it is noted that the increase in fatalities has occurred during a fall in commodity prices.This paper examines prevention methods and systems to deal with hazards that have the potential to result in either single or multiple fatalities. Managing the risks associated with mine ventilation is used to illustrate the principals behind the approach.The paper also touches on the broad science of human error and proposes a multifaceted approach to controlling and preventing fatal risks.A summary of the steps involved in developing an effective principal hazard management plan is provided.CITATION:Clough, A J, 2015. In order to develop downstream processing routines for iron ore and to understand the behaviour of the ore during such processing, extensive mineralogical characterisation is required. To determine mineral associations, mineral liberation and grain size distribution, imaging techniques have to be used. There are two main imaging techniques used for the characterisation of iron ore, ie, Optical Image Analysis (OIA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In this article a QEMSCANTM system is used as an example of SEM methodology and results obtained from it are compared against results obtained by the CSIRO ‘Recognition3/Mineral3’ OIA system.Both OIA and QEMSCANTM systems have advantages and drawbacks. Even though the latest QEMSCANTM systems can distinguish between major iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, it is still problematic for QEMSCANTM to distinguish between iron ore minerals very close in oxygen content, eg haematite and hydroheamatite, or between different types of vitreous goethite.QEMSCANTM also can misidentify minerals with close chemical composition, ie haematite as magnetite and vitreous goethite as haematite. In OIA, iron minerals with slight differences in their oxidation or hydration state are more easily and directly recognisable by correlation with their reflectivity. In both methods, the presence of microporosity can result in some misidentification, but in SEM methods misidentifi cations due to microporosity can be critical. Low resolution during QEMSCANTM analysis can significantly affect the textural classifi cation of particle sections.The main conclusion of this study is that, for low iron content ores or tailings, QEMSCANTM can provide much more detailed information on the gangue minerals than OIA. However, for routine characterisation of iron ores with high iron content and containing a variety of iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, OIA is a faster, more cost-effective and more reliable method of iron ore characterisation. A combined approach using both techniques will provide the most detailed understanding of iron ore samples being characterised.

The PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) operation is a large scale coalmine operating on the east coast of Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia. Originally developed under a coal contract of work (CCOW) with the Indonesian Government, new legislation has led to uncertainty as to the actual life of the mine, the size of the operating lease or mining area, the rehabilitation compliance requirements and other areas of concern. The actual life-of-mine (LOM) plan is therefore in a constant state of flux and must be updated and modified with every new piece of information.Under the CCOW system, the mine life ran from the first year of production (1992) for 30 years (2021), with the potential to extend for a further two ten-year periods. KPC has always intended to run until at least 2041. Under the new legislation, the potential term of the CCOW (to be replaced by a mining license) is open to interpretation, resulting in KPC having to prepare plans allowing for a LOM that may end in 2021, 2031, 2041 or a range of other possible periods of time.Uncertainty about legislation (and hence the mine life) possible production rates and available work areas; variable coal prices and costs; varying management contexts; the substantial reserves available; difficulty sourcing dump space; potential rehabilitation costs and the dependence of a community of over 100 000 people on a single operation sees the LOM and mine closure teams preparing dynamic yet thoroughly robust plans that are updated on multiple occasions per year.This paper will describe the procedure followed by KPC and the potentially show stopping issues that must be dealt with.CITATION:Bennett, S M and Manege, I, ?2014. The method of supporting excavated roofs in underground coal mines by conventional roof bolting systems is challenged due to its shortcomings of being time-consuming and leading to possible unsafe installation. Though a few alternatives have been considered, the ultimate and most efficient bolting method has often been conceived as one using a self-drilling roof bolt, or a Rapid Face Bolting System (RFBS). The on-going Rapid Face Bolting Project undertaken by the University of Wollongong includes a special tubular bolt design.The tubular bolt designed for the RFBS is a "single-pass" bolt equipped with cutting tips used to drill a bolthole to accommodate the bolt. Different from that of the coring bit employed in geological site investigations, the principal design consideration for the tubular bolt is low cost associated with a small working life for the cutting tip.
