The depletion of iron ore deposits at the face of the mine site dictates the necessity for the exploitation of formerly less attractive orebodies to meet the demand of the modern world. These orebodies will typically be found close to or even beneath the water table where an increasing clay and moisture content will result. Problematic iron ores, colloquially termed as ‘wet and sticky’ material (WSM), can have a significant impact in the material handling stream due to the expensive downtime of processing equipment, which is attributed to the inter-particle and boundary cohesion and adhesion forces of the bulk material.In order to gain a better understanding of the causes of poor handleability, experimental test methods to determine wall adhesion, and inter-particle adhesion within bulk materials were developed. Based on the combination of wall adhesion and inter-particle adhesion measurements, with traditional methods of assessing bulk material handleability, a new method to assess the potential of bulk materials to cause handling problems is proposed. This method reduces the multitude of factors leading to problematic behaviour to a handleability index (HI) [0,1], which is easily assessed and understood. The method is suitable for adhesive materials and applicable for a wide range of material flow, from gravity reclaim stockpiles to transfer chutes and carry back on conveyor belts.Additionally, this research presents an assessment of the HI derived by experimental testing of three iron ore samples. Main geochemical problems concerning the environment and mining industry interrelation are connected with the transformation of natural water chemistry by mining wastes. The investigation of many mines in Primorye, the southern part of the Russian Far East, showed that their mining waters have high concentrations of heavy metals and aluminium. Water acidity is primarily connected with the amount of acid-forming sulphide minerals in ores and also depends on the neutralising capacity of rocks. Considerable quantity of metals occur in the waters in dissolved form. Metal concentrations in mining waters exceeds the natural levels by two to five orders of magnitude and can't be reduced to the background levels even after multiple dilution. It is necessary to develop and put into practice new technologies so that to reduce the geochemical impact upon the environment.

Electronic noses are being used in the processing industries and in fields such as environmental and occupational hygiene to detect a wide variety of problems from contaminated foods to toxic chemicals in soils. Recently, research has been conducted into the use of these devices for detecting spontaneous combustion in mines with the aim of producing a method for early detection of a developing heating. Gas samples were collected from both SimtarsÆ 16 m3 large-scale spontaneous combustion reactor and the University of QueenslandÆs two-metre column. The samples were analysed using an electronic nose. GCMS and HPLC were used to identify some of the components present. A number of issues both from a practical mine situation and a scientific standpoint have been identified that need to be addressed before these devices can be used to detect a developing heating. Aluminised bags routinely used in the mining industry to collect gas samples for analysis of the permanent gases are not suitable for use with electronic nose devices as they have a æfingerprintÆ from the polymer lining that interferes with the coal heating fingerprint. Tedlar bags used for environmental gas sampling are also unsuitable due to their fingerprint. Gas samples can be collected in glass gas bulbs with aluminium seals and successfully analysed. However the aluminium foil used to seal the bulbs is a restricted item in underground mines. It was also found that the volatile organic fingerprint of the coal heating was extremely weak at temperatures below 130¦C. Before a useful application can be developed, further investigation into the chemical species present in the off-gases from Australian coals is required.

Rheological Behaviour of Clay-Rich Gangue Mineral Dispersions During Hydrometallurgical Treatment Alumino-silicate minerals invariable may present an intractable challenge in hydrometallurgical operations employed in low grade nickel, copper and gold ore leaching or high level nuclear waste (HLNW) processing. The interactions and reactivity of alumino-silicate clay gangue minerals such as muscovite/sericite, chlorite, kaolinite and smectite under acidic (eg pH <3) or alkaline (pH >13) conditions can have a striking impact on the particle interactions. These may manifest in undesirable pulp rheology, poor extraction rates and challenges in the subsequent "handleability" and solid-liquid separation processes (eg dewatering). In the present work, a review of investigations involving the interfacial chemistry, interactions and rheological behaviour of aqueous dispersions of mica-group, layered alumino-silicate clay (muscovite / sericite) and chalcocite minerals as a function of pH in the range 2 - 9 and time at 25¦C, is presented. Particle zeta potential, reflecting interfacial chemistry, indicated a strong pH-history and particle volume fraction dependency. Pristine particles' zeta potentials measured from high to low pH indicated mineral-specific isoelectric point (iep) at pH range 2 - 5. Subsequent measurements from low to high pH showed pH-history dependency with iep shift to higher pH values, the extent of which also depended upon particle volume fraction and aging time. Pulp pH-mediated particle interactions revealed by shear yield stress analysis displayed a bifurcation behaviour and good compliance with DLVO theory. The maximum pulp yield values occurred at the iep whilst weak rheology was observed where the magnitude of the particle zeta potential was greatest. The pivotal role played by both pulp chemistry and suspension conditions in regulating the particle interactions and concomitant rheological behaviour is highlighted. The implications of the findings with regards to clay-base pulps' handleability and its control during aqueous processing are discussed.

Mine ore, reduced to minus 71/2 in. by primary crushers, is stockpiled. Size reduction of the reclaimed material by secondary and tertiary crushers is achieved in a closed circuit crushing and screening plant. Screen products of minus 30 mm plus 6 mm lump, and minus 6 mm fines are stockpiled by conveyor and stacker systems prior to rail despatch 10 port facilities at Dampier. Crusher settings, determined from experience, are closely maintained to obtain the desired lump/fines ratio. Chemical and sizing analyses from automatically taken samples are used to maintain product specifications. The beneficiation plant upgrades the fines product when this is necessary. The recorded wear life of individual plant components is the basis of a planned maintenance programme.

In this work, preheating and roasting tests of pellets made from blends of Western Australia ultra-fine (WAU) magnetite concentrate and Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or Brazilian hematite concentrate were carried out. The results showed that pellets made from 100 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate possesses inferior preheating and roasting performance when preheating at 1050°C for 20 minutes and roasting at 1300°C for 40 minutes, the compressive strength of preheated and fired pellets is 502 N/pellet and 2313 N/pellet, respectively. When 40 per cent Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or 20 per cent Brazilian hematite concentrate was blended with 60 per cent or 80 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate, the appropriate preheating temperature of the pellets are reduced from 1050°C to 950°C and 975°C, and also the firing temperature of two types pellets are decreased from 1300°C to 1250°C and 1280°C respectively. Moreover, the compressive strength of fired pellets is obviously improved up to 2746 N/pellet and 2630 N/pellet respectively. Microstructure analysis of the fired pellets made from 100 per cent WAU shows its poor growth of Fe2O3 grains, low interlinkage degree of hematite grains, small size of crystallised grains and high porosity of pellet; however, the fired pellets that blended with domestic magnetite concentrate or with Brazilian hematite concentrate have fully growth of Fe2O3 grains, closer interlinkage of hematite grains, lower porosity and stronger consolidation. Hainan Province (Hainan Island) in South China hosts numerous Mo-polymetallic ore deposits that are genetically related to Cretaceous granitoid intrusions. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating and molybdenite Re-Os dating reveal three metallogenic episodes: the late Early Cretaceous (ca 112 Ma), the late Early to Late Cretaceous (ca 95–106 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (ca 72–89 Ma). The third mineralising episode might represent the youngest Mo mineralising event in East China. Results from this study demonstrate that Mo mineralisation on Hainan Island occurred under an extensional setting that was prevailing in the late Mesozoic (ca 180–67 Ma) in South China, which was likely due to the slab rollback of the subducted palaeo-Pacific plate beneath the South China continent.CITATION:Xu, D R, Hu, G C, Wu, C J, Fu, Y R and Chen, H, 2015. Development of Underground Gold Processing Plants Underground gold processing plants have potential advantages over traditional surface installations related to a smaller environmental footprint, reduced capital and mining costs, improved security and increased value of the product delivered to surface. The concept of processing gold ores on the surface is the traditional paradigm. A process of pre-concentration of ore underground is likely to result in a major shift in operating costs. In particular, run of mine ore or a large proportion of it will not need to be transported to the surface. As a result, environmental and financial benefits are likely. Underground plants are likely to be pre-concentration systems where the process product is a high-grade concentrate and tailings for stope backfill. Units will be either static or modular. Concentration methods will be gravity and/or flotation or leach based. This paper discusses the development underground gold plants from early concept, through to the world's first operational unit, a newly commissioned unit and the technical basis of a fully modular system.

A commonplace, sometimes overlooked or taken for granted, article of everyday existence is the tin can. Produced from thin gauge low carbon steel, and commonly coated with a mere 60 millionths of an inch of pure tin, the product is however strong and corrosion resistant. Tin-plate serves a myriad of purposes-the most important being to meet the requirements of the canning industry. Australia's newest steel product, tin-plate, was first produced on a commercial scale during the early part of August, 1957. The commissioning of the Hot Dip Tinning Plant (Fig. 1) of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. at Port Kembla, marked the culmination of a proposal dating back to 1939, the advent of World War II having caused its deferment to the present time.Cornish tin is known to have been exported as early as 300 B.C. to Syria and tinned vessels existed even in the year A.D. 23. The tin coating of plate could be described as an ancient art, believed to have had its origin in Bohemia in the thirteenth century. During the next 450 years, the process spread through Saxony to Pontypool in Monmouthshire, but it was a further half century before any measure of success was obtained.Perhaps the two greatest milestones in tin-plate manufacture were the rolling of iron plates first carried out in 1728, thereby outmoding the hammer formed sheet, and more recently, the development of the electro-deposition process. Northern Iron Ltd (NIL) is an Australian listed company that recently brought the historic Sydvaranger open pit Magnetite Mine (the Project) in Northern Norway successfully back into production. NIL made the decision to operate the Project on an owner mining basis, due to limited large scale mining expertise amongst Norwegian mining contractors, a long mine life, a limited range in planned mining rate and to minimise costs. As a new mine operator in a country where labour practices are strictly regulated, there was the desire to reduce the risk associated employing and managing skilled personnel. This was achieved by coupling the purchase of the required mining equipment from the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) regional dealers with OEM supported Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC). This paper examines the process that was followed to implement an owner mining operation in a short time frame; approximately 12 months from the initial requests for quotation to actual delivery of mining equipment to site, and some of the challenges faced. By following a formal and well-tested process, not only was the implementation achieved in the set time frame, but significant value was added through the cost savings achieved in the equipment purchase price and MARC rates that were negotiated through this process.

Copper waste dump leaching is growing in importance because of the.large tonnages (up to 250,000 ton/day) of low grade waste rock available from open cut mining of copper deposits and proof that controlled leaching of copper from such dumps can be profitable.Overburden or waste rock, ranging in size from large boulders to fines, is dumped as cheaply as possible on sloping sites. Copper is leached from the dumps by applying up to 12,000 gal/min of leach solution (a combination of spent solution from cementation and make-up water) to the top of the dumps by various techniques.Efliuent from the dumps is sent to a cementation plant for copper recovery.Factors which may be controlled, either directly or indirectly, to give a controlled copper content in the dump efliuent (usually 1-2 g/l.) are the cycle of operations (i.e. the alternate wetting and drying periods), thevolume of solution applied to the dump, pH, Fe2+ and Fe3+ content or redox potential, oxygen content, bacteria and their necessary nutrients, and temperature.Dissolution of oxide copper minerals appears to be mainly a function of acid concentration. Copper sulphide minerals need oxidation for dissolution to occur and this is accomplished by a combination of oxygen,ferric ion, and bacteria. Oxidation of pyrite, oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3 +, and hydrolysis of Fe3+ are of some importance in leaching practice. The presence of gangue carbonate minerals is detrimental.Physical factors connected with penetration of solution into large rocks are important and the treatment of an individual dump usually extends over a period of many years. Recovery of copper from solution is usually achieved by cementation with iron (usually in the form of crumpled cans) but the use of sponge iron is becoming more important. Iron consumption varies from 1 to 4 lbiron per pound of copper. New detailed mapping, micropalaeont- ology and isotopic dating have been successful in revising the stratigraphy of Woodlark Island. All Middle to Late Miocene intrusives and volcanic rocks have been assigned to the Okiduse Volcanics. In addition, the results demonstrate that the Tabukui beds and Wonai Hill beds (N9, late Early Miocene to earliest Middle Miocene) are a single unit. Similarly, the Nasai and Suloga Limestones are confirmed as a single stratigraphic unit as they yield similar foraminiferal ages (upper Te, Early Miocene), and both occur in the same stratigraphic position unconformably overlying basement Loluai Volcanics. Radiocarbon dating suggests a latest Pleistocene age for the upper Kiriwina Formation. Extensive Quaternary cover and low relief prevents detailed structural airphoto interpretation. In general, the structure is simple with all units on Woodlark dipping to the northwest a_4 exhibiting prominent local block faulting.

The coalmining industry in most countries has, at various times, suddenly been confronted with a decrease in demand for coal. Readjustments made to reduce productive capacity to match the reduced demand for coal have often resulted in hardship to mineworkers, loss of capital investment to mineowners and loss of coal reserves. The consequences of the methods of readjustment adopted in the past have contributed to the low esteem in which coalmining has come to be regarded by a large section of the gel).eral public in many countries.Four sections of the coalmining industry, representing different periods of time, different countries, and different methods of industrial organisation have been examined:Great Britain and the U.S.A. during the inter war years, the post war European Coal and Steel Community, and post war Great Britain under the National Coal Board. An assessment has been made of the methods adopted in each case to reduce productive capacity to match a reduced demand for coal. Finally the fundamentals of the problem-as it affects the coalmining industry of any country-are considered, and possible solutions put forward.During the 1950's, surplus productive capacity was a problem in many coalmining countries, including Australia and New Zealand. As a rule no techniques are developed beforehand to solve problems introduced by a sudden decrease in demand for coal. The situation is usually tackled by a series of short term decisions based on expediency, which often in the long run only aggravate the problem.

From modest beginnings in 1996, research into the mineral potential of New ZealandÆs Exclusive Economic Zone has progressed into a major multidisciplinary component of GNSÆs recently funded 6-year æMineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZÆ Programme. In excess of $7.5 M of research funding has been expended, plus $10 M leveraged via collaborations with NIWA (NZ), NOAA (USA), JAMSTEC (Japan), U. Kiel (Germany) and ANU (Australia), whose scientists have contributed hugely to research cruises, as well as subsequent analysis and publication. The 1999 NZAPLUME I cruise was the first research expedition to systematically locate, and chemically characterise, submarine hydrothermal venting associated with arc volcanoes of the southern part the Kermadec intra oceanic arc system. This was followed by the 2002 NZAPLUME II and 2004 NZAPLUME III cruises to the mid- and northern-sections of the Kermadec arc, respectively. Combined, these cruises have surveyed 1300 km of the volcanic chain (from Whakatane to Monowai), including 34 major volcanic centres. Together with concurrent surveys in the Tonga arc, this is now the longest continuous stretch of intra oceanic arc to be surveyed for hydrothermal emissions. Most of the volcanic centres are characterised by simple cones although 30 per cent contain caldera complexes, and compositions range from basalt through to rhyolite. Massive sulphide mineralisation has been recovered from several volcanic centres in the southern Kermadecs (Clark, Rumble II West and Brothers), suggesting the existence of significant Au and base metal bearing deposits along the arc front.

The disasters between 1920 and 1979 in coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales due to underground fire, gas or coal dust explosion or to gas or coal outbursts, have been assessed. The evidence relating to disasters caused by gas explosion points strongly to divergence from safe mining practice as the main cause. There is a need for greater training and education of personnel, closer analysis of gas reports, better monitoring and testing procedures, improved ventilation standards and a policy where safe working practice is actively encouraged. Conditions in the New South Wales occurrences of gas explosion were similar to those at Collinsville, Queensland in that dykes, igneous sills, burnt out coal and faulting were common to all. Information on outbursts indicates that contributing factors were intrusions, depth of cover, fault zones and other geological disturbances, methods of work, pressure and type of gas.

It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2. Cupellation Process.-Lead button is re-oxidised to litharge leaving a gold and silver bead.

Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discovered in theJiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: 1. porphyry related; 2. metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and 3. sediment-hosted deposit.   The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, the chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.
