The great coal strike of 1902, which confined the work at the Short Mountain colliery of the Lykens Valley Coal Com pany almost exclusively to pumping, gave an opportunity to determine with considerable accuracy the cost of pumping the water from these very old, extensive and wet mines. This colliery, which is located in the extreme southwestern end of the anthracite coal-field, has been operated continuously since 1836, and has shipped 7,747,313 tons of coal. This and the Williamstown colliery are the only operations in Dauphin county. The workings cover about 5 miles along the North dip of the extreme westerly end of the basin, with the operating slopes near the center. They extend around the westerly spoon of the basin and back about 31/4 miles easterly on the South dip. The mines are very deep, the present workings ex tending to 711 ft. below sea-level, and about 1600 ft. below the lowest surface-opening. The coal is hoisted principally from the Short Mountain slope, which is 1550 ft. long, with 26 to 68 degrees dip, and from an inside slope, No. 4, 800 ft. long, with 52 to 72 degrees dip. The ordinary capacity of the colliery is about 1000 tons per day, and the average output for the years 1897 to 1901, in clusive, was 297,000 tons per year. The seams worked are the lowest Red Ash measures, being, respectively, Nos. I, II and III of the coal-bed series, but locally called the " Little Lykens," " Lykens," and " Whites." On the accompanying plan the Lykens seam is shown in full and the Whites in dotted lines. The pumping-plant is divided into four lifts, the pumps being located as shown in the section, Fig. 1, and the plan, Fig. 2.

Carlisle: An old friend and good friend, Alan Bateman, is the Silliman Professor of Geology Emeritus at Yale and editor of the Journal of Economic Geology. Now, Alan, let's start off by telling us something about how you became interested in copper. Bateman: Well, after I left Yale in 1913, I was appointed one of the field members of the Secondary Enrichment Investigation. We spent three years in the field studying all the copper deposits of North America, trying to find out how secondary copper enrichment took place. As part of this investigation, I went up to Kennecott, Alaska, in 1916. After the trip I was asked by the president of the company to become consulting geologist to them. I accepted his offer, and to this day I'm still consulting geologist to the Kennecott Copper Corp. Up at Kennecott, there were both Henry Krumb and my good friend Henry DeWitt Smith, who was general superintendent. He and I had been together at Yale, and I had ushered at his wedding. Interestingly enough, Henry took his bride to Alaska and I took mine there two months later. My assistant was Don McLaughlin, and I think that was his first experience in a mining camp. We published a paper on Kennecott together and cemented a friendship lasting to this day.

THE sudden death of Dr. Drown, on Nov. 17, 1904, brought to multitudes the pang of personal loss. Of all those who, as students at Lafayette College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lehigh University, were brought under his influence, not one can have forgotten him, and all will now acknowledge, with an unfading gratitude, what they owe in professional equipment to his wise, clear, skillful guidance, and in character to his sympathetic, stimulating personality. Outside of this wide circle, the experts of both hemispheres will lament the departure of one who, in his department of scientific inves¬tigation, both knew what work was needed, and how to do it so that it needed not to be done again. The older members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will remember with gratitude the part he took, as Secretary from 1873 to 1884, in promoting the interest of that organization, and in shaping the plan and policy which it has followed with such noteworthy success. And, in addition to all these (though partly included among them), there are a host of friends; who can scarcely think of the public loss by reason of their own. Thomas Messenger Drown was born March 19, 1842, at Phil¬adelphia, Pa. His parents were natives of New England; and. he was the youngest of their three sons. THE several studies concerned with the annealing of thin nickel films have largely been restricted to films of a single thickness.1-4 It is well-known, however, that both physical and mechanical properties depend upon film thickness.5, 6 The strength-thickness relations found in vapor-deposited nickel films in the annealed and as-deposited states, as an example, are at least partially due to the density and arrangement of imperfections within the films.7, 8 For these reasons, the annealing characteristics of thin nickel films as a function of thickness were investigated. Electrical resistance was chosen to monitor annealing behavior since resistance changes are partially dependent upon defect structure. In addition, the equations predicting film resistivity as a function of thickness are already available.9, 10 Further advantages afforded by electrical-resistance measurements are its adaption to continuous readings during annealing and its relative simplicity. Nickel films were vapor-deposited, at average rates of 60Å per sec, on Vycor substrates held at room temperature in vacuums of about 10-5 torr. Afterwards, deposition-thickness measurements were made using a multiple-beam interferometric technique. A more detailed description of deposition procedures and the interferometer appear elsewhere.7, 8 The four-probe method was employed in measuring electrical resistance since this technique measures film resistance without contributions from lead wires and contacts. Resistance measurements were made before, during, and after annealing to temperatures of 700°C under vacuums of approximately 10-4 torr. Measurements were made every 25°C or more often when necessitated by unusual resistance changes. Cooling and heating rates were maintained at approximately 5°C per min. The deposition of calcium carbonate scale on surface and subsurface production equipment creates an operation problem in many oil fields. The formation water in which the carbonate-scale-forming components are initially dissolved becomes supersaturated with calcium carbonate as a result of the drop in pressure during production. The continuous flow of a supersaturated solution through the production equipment results in the growth of a dense layer of calcium-carbonate crystals. For a scale layer to be built up, the supersaturated formation water should contact the walls of the production equipment. The tendency for scale to be deposited, therefore, will be low, if the crude has a low water cut and if the water is finely dispersed in the oil. A scale problem will occur, if at a high water cut part of the water is present as free water. The rate of scale deposition will then be approximately proportional to the rate of free water production. Depending upon where the formation water becomes supersaturated, scale may be deposited in the flow line only, in both flow line and tubing, and in some cases even in the perforations and in the formation near the wellbore. In the South Sumatran fields (Indonesia) the main difficulties encountered due to the deposition of calcium-carbonate scale have been restriction of flow through tubings and flow lines, wear and abrasion of plungers and liners, and stuck plungers or wellhead valves. So far, the only methods of combating the *Presently associated with Brunei Shell Petroleum Co., Ltd.. Seria. scale problem have been routine acidizing and additional well pulling. As for the pumping wells, it was estimated that some 50 percent of the total well-pulling effort was directly attributable to scale deposition. The most promising alternative was to prevent the deposition of calcium carbonate scale by means of chemicals. Inorganic polyphosphates such as sodium hexametaphosphate and trisodium polyphosphate are known to retard the formation of scale by the "threshold action". They are adsorbed on specific faces of the crystal nuclei and thus prevent crystal growth, thereby stabilizing supersaturation. Polyphosphates are effective at very low concentrations ( a few ppm), and far less than stoichiometric quantities are required to keep the scaling ions in solution. Recent investigations on barium sulfate scale1 have confirmed this mechanism. The types of polyphosphate mentioned can be applied as concentrated aqueous solutions either squeezed into the formation, lubricated down the annulus or injected via macaroni string. Several squeeze jobs with polyphosphate solutions have been carried out in the South Sumatran fields, however, with disappointing results. Lubrication down the annulus and injection through a macaroni string were not considered attractive in this area because of the kind of equipment and the degree of supervision these techniques require. Polyphosphates are also available in a granular, glassy form, which, in contrast with the readily soluble types already mentioned, show an extremely low

The performance of a gas reservoir su,bject to water drive is often affected by interference due to gas procluction or injection in neighboring reservoirs adjacent to a common aquifer. Field data available on production-pressure behavior of several reservoirs indicate that prediction of reservoir performence must include the effects due to mutual interference. A method developed to predict the performance of two or more interfering gas reservoirs, subject to specified production-iniection .rchedule.s, is presented. The method involves the comhinatiorz of the theory of unsteady-state water movernent with appropriate meterial balance consideration.s. The procedure which extends M. Mortada's treatment for interfering oil reservoirs makes use of his dimen-.sionless pressure drop quantities. prevented graphically in the literature. In order to evaluale the predictive accuracy and practical field applicability of the theory, the method has been applied to analyze the performance of two actual gas reservoirs in mutual interference. The calculations were performed on an IBA4 704 computer. The predicted performances were alro calcltlated with the interference effects ignored. The results show that considerably better agreement between calculated and observed behavior ic. obtained when the interference effects are included. INTRODUCTION Fluid communication between any number of oil or gas reservoirs adjacent to a common aquifer results in mutual interference effects on their production-pressure behavior. The theory, application and interpretation of pressure build-up behavior of oil wells, drawdown tests on oil or gas-producing formations and behavior of several storage reservoirs indicate ample experimental evidence of mutual interference. A method developed to compute the behavior of interfering oil reservoirs was published several years ago by Mortada.4 Studies conducted during the recent years on underground storage of natural gas clearly indicated the need for extending Mortada's work to the case of interfering gas reservoirs. The adoption of appropriate material balance equations in conjunction with the unsteady-state pressure interference theory yields pressure-explicit equations. Their solution, their application to a specific case history and an over-all evaluation of the developed method through the comparison of predicted and observed field performances were the main objectives of this study. EFFORTS to obtain definite quantitative data when employing the currently used bubble pick-up method1,2 as a pre-flotation investigation tool led to the adoption of the magnifying mirror method and the microscopic method modifications. Quantitative data obtained by these two methods were converted into bubble pick-up indices and bubble pick-up coefficients. Rough correlations were established between the calculated indices and the results of contact angle testing as well as actual flotation under the same conditions. The basic steps of the magnifying mirror method are as follows: 1—mixing 200 ml distilled water, sized and cleaned mineral particles of approximately 0.5 g, pH regulator, and flotation reagents in a glass beaker; 2—swirling the mineral particles to the center of the beaker to leave a clear circumference; 3—pressing an air bubble against the mineral particles for about 1 sec, and then moving the mineralized air bubble to the clear part of the beaker; and 4—dropping all the attached mineral particles of the air bubble by tapping the bubble holder, and counting the number of the dropped particles by looking at the magnified image in the mirror positioned beneath the beaker. This method is impractical for mineral particles which are transparent in water or finer than 200 mesh. The microscopic method is essentially similar to the above described magnifying mirror method, with the exception that the mineralized air bubble was drawn up into the bubble holder and subsequently discharged onto an externally placed watch glass, where the number of pick-up particles was counted with the aid of a microscope or hand lens. Drying was necessary when the discharged liquid interfered with the counting. The results of the bubble pick-up tests can be simply expressed in the form of the actual count. However, this can be misleading because the number of pick-up particles varies not only with the size of bubble but also with the size of particles. This short-coming is largely remedied by the use of the bubble pick-up index. as calculated from the following equation: PI = (pn/p) 100 [1] in which PI and pn are respectively the pick-up index and the number of pick-up particles under any test conditions, and p is the maximum number of pick-up particles of the same mineral under optimum flotation conditions, with the same size holder and particle. The bubble pick-up coefficient is a term coined to denote the difference between the bubble pick-up index of mineral particles in a liquid and that of the same mineral-liquid mixture plus a chemical reagent at the same pH value. For example, the difference between the pick-up index of a naturally floatable bituminous coal in a solution of water and kerosene and that of the same coal in water alone is a bubble pick-up coefficient. Compared with the contact angle method, the quantitative bubble pick-up method is inferior in accuracy but superior in sensitivity. Other advantages of the bubble pick-up method are that the apparatus can be easily assembled, the mineral sample is conventionally prepared, and the test procedure is relatively simple. References S. Before discussing the application of capacitance for the measurement of moisture content in a moving stream of coal it might be well to first give a brief description of the process and then show how it can be applied to the coal industry. A capacitor may be described as a device having two conductors separated by an insulator, the conductors hereafter being designated as a test cell or test plates and the insulator as the dielectric. Capacitance, therefore, is a measure of the ability of a capacitor to store an electrical charge. Two basic factors that affect capacitance are the dimensions of the capacitor and the dielectric constant of the insulator. Capacitor dimensions which affect its capacity are the area A of the conductive surface, and the distance d between plates. Capacitance is inversely proportional to the distance between plates and directly proportional to area A, so if capacitance is indicated as C and the dielectric constant as K the equation for capacitance would be C = AK/d. The dielectric constant can be described as the ratio of the actual capacitance of any given material to that of a vacuum, which is unity. In industrial applications the area of the plates remains constant as also does the distance between them, leaving the dielectric constant as the only variable to affect the capacitance measurement. Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of an r-f excited capacitance bridge in which a test cell is part of the circuit. This bridge consists of four capacitors in two pairs connected across an a-c voltage source. In one side of the circuit the two capacitors are fixed but in the other side they are variable, one being the rebalance capacitor operated by the servo motor and the other the test plates between which the dielectric passes. Capacity of the plates is a function of the dielectric constant of the material between them and is measured at radio frequency. Within the recording instrument is an r-f oscillator and a 60 c ps modulator. The radio frequency signal is generated by the oscillator, modulated by a 60 cps wave, and sent to the bridge. Therefore the signal entering the capacitive bridge is a radio frequency carrier with a 60 cycle envelope, If the bridge is in balance as the signal enters there would be no voltage drop and so no output by the detector. As long as the dielectric constant remains the same the bridge will stay in balance. However, any change in the dielectric constant, which in this case would be a change in moisture content, would affect the bridge. Higher moisture increases the capacity of the test cell which causes less voltage to develop across it causing imbalance of the bridge. This in turn causes a radio frequency signal to appear at the detector. Output from the detector is a 60 cycle ripple which is in proportion to the imbalance of the circuit. A 60 cycle amplifier boosts the detector signal to enough power to drive the servo motor which positions the recording pen and also rotates the variable capacitor, to which it is mechanically connected, to bring the bridge back in balance. An increase in moisture causes the servo motor to rotate in one direction, but a decrease causes imbalance in the opposite direction, and thus rotates the motor in that direction. This brings the bridge back in balance and stops the motor. The bridge shown in Figure 1 has been modified so as to provide a wide range of adjustments. Coarse and fine span adjustments located in the recording instrument are set to govern the amount of pen movement for a given change in capacitance. It has been shown that grain-boundary migration during high-temperature creep can reduce or even prevent the formation of intercrystalline voids, giving a considerable increase in ductility.' A similar observation has been made in a recent investigation of the creep properties of various grades of nickel and nickel alloys. The results can be illustrated by the observations made on: a) Pure vacuum-cast nickel (99.993 pct Ni) b) Impure vacuum-cast nickel (99.97 pct Ni) c) Pure nickel containing internal voids (produced by a process of intering). d) A substitutional solid solution alloy of pure nickel containing 1.16 pct Sn. All the materials were given a high-temperature anneal (>850°C) to produce a stable grain size of 7 to 10 grains per linear mm. The apparatus and techniques used to obtain the present results have been described elsewhere.' In this series, grain growth was observed only in the highest-purity, vacuum-cast metal. Thus we may consider that in the other materials grain-boundary migration was prevented by either preexisting voids or solute atoms. It is known 1,2 that the equilibrium between titanium metal, TiCl2 , and TiCl3, in a solvent of molten metal chlorides, is influenced both by the total amount of dissolved titanium and by the type of solvent. Assuming that the trivalent titanium forms the complex ion Ti111 Cl4, the equilibrium reaction may be expressed by the following equation, (Me) TiIII cl4+ 1/2 Ti = 3/2 TiII cl2+ (Me) Cl The ideal ionic equilibrium constant for this reaction is, Where the N's are the molar ionic fractions in the equilibrium melt, and (Me) the different types of cations present in the equilibrium mixture. The following thermodynamic relation is derived between Kand the concentration of cations in the equilibrium melt, mix The N"S are the equivalent ionic fractions, and so forth are constants corresponding to the standard changes in free energy for reactions in melts where only the cation indicated is present, and f (y1) is a function of the activity coefficients in the equilibrium mixture. When this term vanishes, a simplified linear relationship between In Kideal and the concentration is obtained. The simplified relationship has been applied with satisfactory results to the experimental data of Mellgren and pie,' and Kreye and Kellogg.2 MANY existing methods for the production of light metals involve the reduction of their respective metal halides in the presence of salt melts composed of alkali or alkaline earth chlorides. In such a solution phase, the light-metal halide may undergo stepwise reduction from a higher, to a lower valence, and finally to a zero valent state. In this connection, the disproportionation equilibrium is of great interest. In the case where the higher valence is three and the lower valence is two, the disproportionation equilibrium may be written as follows, 3 Me11 = 2 Me111 + Me [I] If this equilibrium occurs in a salt melt containing a large excess of alkali chlorides, a typical ionic melt is obtained. IN THIS paper, as in so many other discussions of historical nature, there is little chance for original material and much has had to be rewritten from older papers, documents, accounts, reports, and the like, some of which are of doubtful authorship or contain conflicting statistics. Fully aware of these little historical pitfalls, the authors have tried to quote the origin where possible, and also to seek further confirmation when the statement warranted it, but cannot assume responsibility for certain facts and dates. The Encyclopedia Britannica was frequently consulted. THE subject of the constitution of copper-iron mattes has received considerable attention in recent years by Keller,1 Bolles,2 Hofman,3 and Gibb and Philp.4 Still more recently Friedrich, Röntgen, Wiedmann, Heyn and Bauer, and Leroux have published, in some instances, elaborate researches on the various systems of the sulphides, and the sulphides and their respective metals, which enter into the constitution of mattes, and have added very greatly to the knowledge of the subject. The work of Friedrich has been especially fruitful. But to date no effort has been made to correlate the data obtained in the latter researches and apply then to the study of the product called " matte," which is made in such large quantities by copper and lead-smelters. In this paper we propose to determine, by metallographic and chemical means, the constitution of copper-iron and copper-lead mattes in the light of the recent data above mentioned. We do not discuss copper-nickel mattes or speisses (artificial arsenides). The paper is divided into three sections I. A review and discussion of the various binary systems of the metallic, sulphides, and the binary systems of various metals and their respective sulphides entering into the constitution of mattes; also a discussion of the physical and chemical properties of these sulphides. II. A description of the results obtained from the chemical and metallographic examinations of the samples of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron matte obtained from various plants.

Time variations in the copper content of the sediments of streams draining mineralized areas were studied in two areas of contrasting climatic environment, one in northern and one in southern British Columbia. In each area, samples were collected and observations made of rainfall, stream discharge and air and water temperature at intervals throughout the summer season. Samples were analyzed for total and cold-extractable copper. Results showed a weak inverse relation between cold-extractable copper and discharge in two out of the three test sites in the southern area, and a decrease in ratio of COld-extractable to total copper over the duration of the test period at a highly anomalous site in the northern area. In suspended rock flour resulting from glacial erosion of mineralized rock in the northern area, virtually all the copper was found to be soluble in cold, dilute hydrochloric acid. None of the variations observed is sufficient to cause serious problems in geochemical sediment surveys. Systematic collection and trace analysis of stream sediments has seen wide application in recent years as a method of primary prospecting in primitive areas. Common practice is to collect fine-grained samples of sediment either from the active channel or from the flood plain near the channel. Samples are dried, sieved and the -80-mesh fraction analyzed after breakdown of the sample by a relatively strong attack, such as by fusion or by treatment with hot perchloric acid. Drying, sieving and rigorous chemical attack requires established facilities, either in a well equipped central laboratory or in base camp. Thus analysis for total metal involves a substantial delay from the time the samples are collected until the analytical data can be reported. An alternative system uses a cold aqueous extrac-tant in place of the hot acid or flux.4 Advantages of the cold-extraction techniques are that kits can be prepared for use directly at the sample site and that, in some problems, the patterns in cold-extractable metal, usually abbreviated cxMe, are more useful as ore guides than the patterns in total metal.' In the course of operational geochemical sediment surveys, a problem that has come up repeatedly is failure to reproduce anomalous values or patterns by resampling the same areas. The mystery of the vanishing anomaly has led to speculation as to whether there is a significant variation in the metal content of sediment samples with the weather or with the time of year. Review of the published literature shows that a number of experiments have been carried out on time variations in the metal content of stream water.1,2,5,7-9 The only published report on time variations in stream sediments that has come to the authors' attention, however, is by Govett,3 working in Northern Rhodesia.

The Greenawalt electrolytic copper extraction process is applicable to suitable oxide ores, sulfide ores and concentrates, and low-grade matte. The process is self-sustaining in acid on sulfide ores or concentrates, on mixed ores, on high-grade oxidized ores; and on low-grade oxidized ores the amount of acid to be purchased or manufactured is greatly reduced. The ferric iron is under easy control, and copper may be effectively deposited from solutions of any acid or iron content likely to be used in copper leaching. From 60 to 75 per cent. of the copper may be removed from the solution in passing through the electrolytic department, before returning the solution to the ore. The amount of copper requiring chemical precipitation, from the waste and foul solutions, is only about 5.0 per cent, of the total copper produced, and this 5.0 per cent. is converted into the electrolytic metal in the regular operation of the process. The entire process can be made practically automatic, and can be carried out mechanically. There is no uncertain departure of any kind in the application of the process; no unusual or unproved apparatus is used. EVER since electrolytic copper refining gave promise of success, about a half century ago, efforts have been made to apply the idea to the extraction of copper from its ores. The methods of attack have, usually, been to leach with a dilute acid and then to deposit electrolytically the copper from the resulting solution with the simultaneous regeneration of the solvent used in the process. Many efforts have been made, and many patents have been taken out, both in the United States and abroad, to give this idea practical application, but only within the past few years have the difficulties been surmounted. Leaching and electrolysis, as applied to copper ores, are among the most promising fields in modern metallurgy. New conditions are arising, which will bring the wet methods into prominence; while high freight rates and increasing cost of fuel will tend to limit smelting to highly favored localities. The possibilities offered by the installation of hydro-electric plants and the greatly enlarged range of power transmission will greatly widen the field of electrolytic methods.

The theory of probability with respect to the failure of structures is discussed. It is shown that the probability of safety, probability of failure, and factor of safety are directly related to each other and that as standard deviation approaches zero, the probability curves approach a unit step function which can be interpreted as the conventional factor of safety. The factor of safety is numerically the ratio of the load to the strength of the material at a particular point or plane in an engineering structure. Mathematically, it can be illustrated as a unit step function undefined at the point where the factor of safety is one (Fig. 1). The uncertainty of variation of soil and rock strengths require factors of safety much higher than those used in other engineering structures. The factors of safety used are generally determined from past experiences with similar structures. However, the factors thus determined do not have any theoretical meaning or do not indicate any relationship to actual safety.' It seems, therefore, logical to develop a system with a sound theoretical basis to obtain a more suitable factor of safety for structures. An application of elementary theory of probability indicates that it is possible to relate this number to theoretical and practical engineering facts.

The Clearwater Deposit, a small occurrence of massive-sulphide mineralization enclosed in an envelope of disseminated-sulphide mineralization, was discovered as a result of an aeroelectromagnetic survey in New Brunswick in 1955. Subsequently, additional flights were made over the deposit and various ground follow-up methods were employed to ascertain the nature of their response. All methods proved to be capable of indicating the occurrence with varying degrees of precision. This paper is a presentation and a discussion of the magnetic and electromagnetic data, both airborne and ground, and the self-potential data obtained over this deposit. The attention of Canadian mining exploration companies was initially focussed on New Brunswick by the discovery, in 1953, of the Brunswick ore body. Ground electromagnetic surveys were of considerable assistance in locating and developing this deposit. In the following year, 1954, the Heath Steele base-metal deposits were discovered by employing an airborne electromagnetic device and ground electromagnetic surveys to follow-up the airborne indications. These discoveries demonstrated clearly that both airborne and ground electromagnetic techniques were applicable for locating the near-surface deposits of massive sulphides present in this region. Airborne electromagnetic equipment became available on a contract basis through Aeromagnetic Surveys Limited early in 1955 and was used extensively thereafter throughout a large portion of northern New Brunswick. It was as a result of one of these surveys with Aeromagnetic Surveys Limited equipment in the summer of 1955 that the Clearwater Deposit was detected. The airborne anomaly was located on the ground by means of an electromagnetic survey using a Swedish Slingram unit. During 1956, the region was investigated more thoroughly- in the hope that other sulphide bodies might be located. Airborne electromagnetic coverage was extended and the Clearwater Deposit itself was used as a testing ground for the various methods and types of equipment currently in use in New Brunswick. In this paper com prative data are presented for the airborne magnetic, airborne electromagnetic, ground magnetic and ground electromagnetic surveys over this deposit. The ground electromagnetic instruments used were the McPhar vertical-loop unit and the Slingram and Boliden horizontal-loop units. Self-potential surveys were carried out with a McPhar unit. From the geophysical point of view, all ground electrical methods employed indicated the presence and the extent of the massive-sulphide mineralization with a good degree of accuracy. An experimental investigation has been made of gas-driven slug displacements in a system of high gas saturation to evaluate the process for use in a California reservoir. Fluid compositions, temperature, pressure and core permeability duplicated reservoir conditions as closely as possible. The temperature was above the critical of the slug materials. The slug composition required for 100 per cent oil recovery in the linear flow systems was found to agree with that determined from equilibrium phase studies. A qualitative theory for the slug displacement of two-phase systems is proposed and found to be in general agreement with the observed flow behavior. The theory predicts that the length of the reservoir fluid-slug transition Zone will increase with increased initial gas saturation and decrease with increased oil swelling accompanying the composition change from reservoir oil to the critical composition. The precipitation of small amounts of an asphaltic phase during the formation of the transition zone had no adverse effects on the flow behavior of otherwise miscible systems. INTRODUCTION Despite the large number of recent publications relating to oil recovery by miscible displacement, little information is available concerning the behavior of crude oil-natural gas systems at conditions likely to be encountered in field application. The laboratory data reported here were obtained during an investigation of the possibility of using a gas-driven LPG slug in a partially depleted California reservoir. Seven gas-driven slug displacements employing slugs of different compositions and sizes were made in 26- to 27-ft long sandstone cores. The equilibrium phase behavior of the systems was also determined. The features of primary interest in this study are the following. 1. Data were obtained on the displacement of reservoir fluids at reservoir conditions. 2. A high gas saturation existed in the long cores at the start of the displacements. 3. The temperature of the studies was above the critical of the slug materials. 4. A comparison between the flow behavior and equilibrium phase behavior, as illustrated by a pseudo-ternary phase diagram, is afforded for a system of considerable complexity. THEORY Phase Behavior The use of the pseudo-ternary phase diagram to illustrate the phase behavior in miscible displacements has been discussed by Clark, Schultz and Shearin. Sie-vert, Dew and Conley and Arnold, Stone and Luffel' have presented both phase equilibrium and flow data for true ternary systems. For the true ternary, the application of the theory is straight-forward; for a reservoir system represented as a ternary, the theory undoubtedly gives a qualitatively correct picture. One purpose of this investigation was to see if the pseudo-ternary phase diagram could be used to predict with reasonable accuracy the conditions necessary for miscible displacements with actual reservoir systems. Methods and results of measuring three basic parameters for ground stability control, ground pressure, strata movement, and geomechanical properties of mine rock are presented in this paper. It is found that these parameters can be measured in situ by simple and practical techniques with nonsophisticated and inexpensive instruments. Specifically, a drillhole dilation technique employing a cylindrical hydraulic borehole pressure cell (CPC) was used to determine the modulus of rigidity. Premining ground pressures were determined by pressure convergence tests with a combination of one CPC and two pre-encapsulated flat hydraulic borehole pressure cells (BPC) installed in a single drillhole. Abutment pressures and pillar loading were monitored with BPC's. Differential strata movements and bed separations were measured with self-recording 10-anchor-point extensometers. Roof-to-floor convergence was measured with self-recording convergence meters. Some applications of these in-situ-determined parameters to mine design and ground stability control are also discussed.

PURE copper that has been allowed to oxidize at an elevated tempera-ture in the air is found to be covered with two distinguishable layers of oxide scale. The outer of these, which is very thin, is composed of cupric oxide, while the inner layer, comprising the bulk of the scale, is made up chiefly of cuprous oxide (Fig. 1a). If a small quantity of an alloying element, such as silicon, is present in the copper, silica particles are found disseminated through the cuprous oxide, deposited most abundantly near the metal surface, and, in addition, silica particles occur to a limited depth within the copper itself (Fig. 1b). It is this inner layer, composed of oxide particles precipitated in a matrix of metallic copper that is known as the "subscale" or the zone of internal oxidation. Under a low oxygen pressure it is possible to produce the subscale without the formation of external layers of copper oxides, thus leaving the metal surface bright and apparently clean while oxidation has occurred, in fact, to a considerable depth within the metal (Fig. 2). Although little is yet known in a detailed way of the mechanism of internal oxidation, the general nature of the process is evident. By virtue of the considerable solubility of oxygen in copper,1 it is possible to bring the alloying element in contact with oxygen within the metallic solid solution. If the oxide of the alloying element is more stable than cuprous oxide, the foreign oxide may form and, since most oxides are relatively insoluble in copper, it will not long remain in solution, but will separate as a precipitate. As the metallic solute is exhausted in the zone of precipitation, oxygen that is constantly being supplied at the surface diffuses farther into the alloy and thus produces an ever-thickening shell of subscale. The distribution of the reacting elements in the subscale and adjoining zones must be somewhat as indicated in Fig. 3. The conditions requisite to internal oxidation to be anticipated are thus: (1) a solubility of oxygen in the alloy, (2) the ability of oxygen to diffuse at an appreciable rate into the alloy, (3) the possibility of the
