Austenite grain size has long been recognized by metallurgists as an important property of steels because of its influence on toughness, hardenability, ma-chinability and creep strength. Much research has been carried out on wrought steels to develop methods for disclosing austenite grain size, and to, provide knowledge of the grain-size characteristics of steels produced and heat-treated in various ways. Much less work in these fields has been done on steel castings; partly because, owing to the variable and complex microstruc-tures of cast steels, it is frequently very difficult to obtain results that are not questionable. The object of this investigation, therefore, was to establish, for a wide variety of carbon and alloy cast steels, suitable methods for disclosing austenite grain size and some knowledge of the grain-size variations to be expected. The steel foundryman is interested in austenite grain size at two different stages in the manufacture of his products; one is just after the steel is cast, and the other is after any reheating operation carried out above the critical temperature range. In both, it must always be kept in mind that the grain size being sought is actually a previous austenite grain size, and that the austenite no longer exists once the steel has cooled to room temperature. The prob-lem of the investigator is always to use evidence obtained from the structure at room temperature to deduce this previous austenite grain size, which was established the last time the steel existed at a temperature above the critical range. Since most steel castings today are at least annealed or normalized, the measurement of austenite grain size established by heat-treatment will he considered first. More than 50 commercially produced cast steels rcpresenting a wide variety of compositions and melting practices were used in the study. For each steel, grain-size determinations were made after each of three widely varying heat-treating schedules namely, one hour at I550'F, one hour at I700°F, and six hours at 1700 F. The list of steels and results obtained on them will be found in the appendix. (See page 530.) A discussion of the knowledge gained on the applicability of various test methods and on grain-size characteristics of cast steels in general follows. Drilling activity in Kansas during 1945 continued at an accelerated pace to meet the demands of war; 1810 tests were drilled as compared with 1856 tests the previous year, 1771 tests in 1943, and 1516 tests in 1942. During the year 31 new oil pools and 10 new gas pools were discovered. Of a total of 364 wildcats drilled, 323 were dry; and of 1446 tests drilled in pools, 825 were oil wells, 197 gas wells, and 425 dry holes.

The National Bureau of Standards received, in August 1940, a number of samples of bridge wire taken from the cables of the General U. S. Grant suspension bridge over the Ohio River at Ports- mouth, Ohio. These cables were 7% in. in diameter under the wrapping and each was made up of 1458 ungalvanized wires of No. 8 gage in 3 parallel-wire strands. The choice of ungalvanized wire was based on the previous satisfactory performance of similar wires in other bridges over periods of 20 to 50 yr. of service(1).2 After about 12 yr. of service a number of breaks were discovered in the Portsmouth bridge cables, most of them at the anchor- age shoes, and they were replaced by cables made up of galvanized wire(2).

INTRODUCTION THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.'s plant at Miami, Ariz., was designed and built to make possible the profitable working of a low-grade, finely disseminated copper deposit containing 100,000,000 tons of ore averaging 1.64 per cent. in copper. From the-beginning it was evident that the-plant could not, be kept integral but that a break would have to be made somewhere in the flow-sheet, removing at least the concentrator to a site more suitable than any available near the mine. It was finally decided, after considering numerous arrangements, to do the coarse crushing at the mine, to store the crushed ore in a bin from which it could be loaded into railroad cars and to haul it to the concentrator, an excellent site for which was available about 1 ¾ miles from the mine. The original intention was to equip a plant to treat 7,500 tons of ore per clay, but through the acquisition and proving up of additional ore reserves, the introduction of the Ohio caving system, and the excellent results obtained in the test mill (which made it possible to treat a lower-grade ore than had been thought possible) it was evident that a plant of much greater capacity should be supplied. It was, therefore, decided to treat approximately 15,000 tons of ore per day, the duties of the four main divisions to be as follows:

THE substance of this paper was prepared for the Seventh International Congress of Applied Chemistry, held in London, May, 1909, under the title, Some Developments in Blast-Roasting. In the absence of the author, a -short abstract of the paper was read, and the abstract only will appear in the proceedings of the congress. The present paper has been partly rewritten and considerably enlarged by information gained since the original was prepared ; also some illustrations have been added. Blast-roasting' is a generic term for the process of forcing air through finely-divided. metallic sulphide with the object of roasting and agglomerating in a single operation. At first the process was confined to a galena-concentrate ; lime, limestone, or gypsum was added, to serve both as a diluent to keep separate the particles of galena that they might be thoroughly oxidized, and as a flux that the partly-roasted ore might be agglomerated by the formation of some slag. Later it was extended to treat other metallic sulphides. The leading processes were the Huntington-Heberlein and the Savelsberg of Europe, and the Carmichael-Bradford of Australia. In the United States and Canada, the Huntington-Heberlein process has found application in some instances with galena-concentrates, for which it was originally intended; but this class of ore is not often treated alone, hence the process has had to be modified to suit conditions. The Savelsberg process has been transplanted to this country in about its original form. The Carmichael-Bradford is not used at present. The changes called for in the Huntington-Heberlein process to adapt it to the class of lead-bearing ores usually smelted have been the 1 A. S. Tuns truly remarkable machine was built on a preliminary scale in May, 1895. The first full-sized table was built by Mr. A. R. Wilfley, and was used in his own mill in Kokomo in May, 1896. The first table sold for installation was placed' in the Puzzle mill, Breckinridge county, in August, 1896. The mill enthusiasts at first hailed it as the cure for all the ills that flesh is heir to in the milling line. A little later it was found to make losses which were serious, and on this account the table succeeded only to a limited extent in displacing the vanners of the gold-mills. Still later, mill-men in a number of districts throughout the country made special studies of the faults of the machine, and devised a number of ways of grouping supplementary machines to overcome as far as possible the losses, and at the same time retain the benefit of the extraordinarily large capacity accompanied by the production of clean concentrates for which the machine has become so justly famous. I hope to make an exhibit of some of these methods in an appendix to my book on ore-dressing which is now in preparation. These experimenters have not written up the subject, and if they possess all the facts they have not given them out for the benefit of the mining profession at large. The object of this paper is to obtain the facts and to pre¬sent them so clearly that their bearing can be seen by all. To this end two complete series-'of tests have been planned. One (the present paper), to study concentration of galena in presence of quartz; the other (to follow shortly), to study concentration of chalcopyrite in presence of quartz. Digital simulation is a modern analysis tool which allows the mine operator to evaluate the result of making a decision without actually changing the organization or buying the equipment. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the use of digital simulation in evaluating a decision of whether or not to introduce dispatching in an open pit mine. The analysis shows that appreciable savings can be realized by dispatching. In certain cases, an operator can reduce the number of trucks required to move a specified tonnage. A second analysis evaluates the alternatives of using one large shovel or two smaller units. In this case, the operating cost of the haulage equipment necessary to support the shovels turns out to be the critical factor in this decision.

The zinc deposits of the Balmat-Edwards Division of the St. Joseph Lead Company in northern New York State provide some 10 per cent of the domestic zinc produced annually within the United States. These complex ore deposits are contained within marbles of the Precambrian Grenville series, in a repetitive sequence of dolomites and silicated units. The Balmat ore bodies are localized at various intervals throughout some 1800 feet of the stratigraphic column on the northwest side of a band of gneiss that has continuity to the Edwards area, some 10 miles to the northeast. The Edwards ore bodies are located to the southeast of this gneiss. The marble formations are thought to have included repetitive intervals of marine sedimentation that provided mineralized source "beds" and were subsequently folded, flooded, and injected with melts at great depth and were sheared, recrystallized, and reconstituted. Detailed structural and stratigraphic studies throughout the northwestern Adirondacks, in the Balmat-Edwards district, and at each mine in particular indicate the close dependence of the ore deposits on the enveloping structure whether it be local, district-wide, or regional in scope. Primary folding has developed a northeast regional trend with northwest dips. Secondary folding has been developed by an almost horizontal northeast-southwest-oriented shear couple in the plane of the regional trend. The secondary folding has produced crossfolds that intersect the regional northeast trend and plunge north to northwest at various angles. The ore bodies are found within certain stratigraphic horizons where repeated alternation of competent and incompetent beds encouraged unusually complex folding. Analysis of individual mine structures indicates that the location of each deposit is controlled by structural crossing of primary and secondary folding. The ore bodies, which are tabular, lenticular, or pod-like in form, have features that suggest parallelism to true bedding or modified flow banding, developed by northeast-southwest shearing stresses related to the development of the crossfolds. The ore deposits in general follow both structural and recrystallization trends within the wall rocks. Mobilization of the pre-metamorphic ore minerals is believed to have involved a combination of plastic flow under stress and solution of the sphalerite, minor galena, and pyrite. The ore fluids are thought to have been guided by secondary shearing and microbrecciation into structurally prepared areas where reprecipitation took place. The presumed premetamorphic mineralization now exhibits epigenetic high-temperature features related to late-stage metamorphism.

THE following experiments were conducted in order to study the influence of the rate of cooling through and below solidification on the dendritic structure (macrostructure) and microstructure of some hypoeutectoid steel. The steel selected was of commercial grade and had the following composition: C, 0.40 per cent.; Mn, 0.85; Si, 0.70; P, 0.099; S, 0.043. After melting in vacuum in an Arsem furnace, the various samples were allowed to solidify and to cool to room temperature as indicated in Fig. 1. Samples were thus obtained representing all possible combinations of slow and fast cooling through the various ranges of temperatures indicated, namely: (1), zone of solidification or primary crystallization, (2) zone of granulation, and (3) zone of secondary crystallization. The location of the different temperature zones in the iron-carbon equilibrium diagram is shown in Fig. 2. The authors adopted. Belaiew's notations. The designations of the various samples readily indicate their treatment, as will be apparent from Table 1.

Arizona and western New Mexico contain 17 of the 25 leading copper mines in the United States. Production of molybdenite, lead, zinc, and by-product gold and silver is important. Precambrian ore deposits are largely limited to the Yavapai Series in central Arizona and most of the metal production has come from massive sulfide deposits, dominantly pyritic but containing different amounts of chalcopyrite, tennantite, sphalerite, and galena. Their origin has been interpreted by some geologists as hydrothermal replacement of schist, and by others as syngenetic deposits later metamorphosed. Most of the important ore deposits are of Mesozoic and early Tertiary age, dominated by the porphyry copper deposits spatially related to stocks, plugs, sills, or dikes of quartzbearing porphyritic to granular rocks. Host rocks for these deposits include the associated intrusive rocks, Precambrian schist and granitic rocks, Paleozoic limestones, Mesozoic(?) porphyritic andesite, and Mesozoic arkose and siltstone. Chalcopyrite and pyrite are the dominant hypogene sulfide minerals in the porphyry copper deposits, accompanied by minor molybdenite. The Questa deposit in New Mexico is largely molybdenite. Supergene sulfide minerals are chalcocite and minor covellite. Some ore bodies consist largely of hypogene sulfides, some are dominantly supergene sulfides, and others are mixed hypogene-supergene sulfides. Supergene oxide-copper minerals locally are important. Intense hydrothermal alteration accompanied the metallization in all of the porphyry copper deposits; five types are recognized, ( 1) propylitic, (2) argillic, (3) potassic, ( 4) quartz-sericite (without clay), and (5) lime silicate. The origin of the closely spaced fractures that contain ore minerals in intersecting veinlets is debatable; some geologists favor tectonic forces and others suggest cooling of magma or shrinkage due to alteration. Breccia pipes, veins, and limestone replacements account for some important deposits of Mesozoic and early Tertiary age, and presumably these are genetically related to the various intrusive rocks of this age. The St. Anthony deposit of Cenozoic age in southeastern Arizona is unique, consisting of a lead-zinc vein associated with later molybdenum and vanadium oxide-minerals. Cenozoic manganese deposits in western Arizona are an important resource in the Artillery Mountains, but the extent to which they may be exploited is a metallurgical and economic problem.

SINCE Maxwell1 first considered the self-diffusion process in 1872 its importance in the kinetic theory of matter has been recognized. Until the discovery of isotopes in 1913, a direct measurement of this quantity seemed impossible. The only information that could be gathered indirectly was for gaseous systems for which the kinetic theory was well developed. When methods of direct observation be-came available, investigations on self-diffusion were carried out in condensed phases. In metals these data are presumably of potential importance in the study of recovery, recrystallization, creep, sintering, and related phenomena. Following the pioneer work of Von Hevesy2 and his collaborators, who determined the rate of self-diffusion in lead with the naturally occurring thorium B isotope, several metals have been investigated. Pb, Ag³, Au.6,5, and Cu6,7,8,9 are examples of isotropic crystals existing in only one phase modification. Anisotropy of diffusion has been demonstrated in Bil6 and Znll. This paper is a study of a single metal in two allotropic forms and also of self-diffusion in a body-centered cubic lattice. Despite the fact that the measurements in each of the papers cited on self-diffusion in copper seem to be internally consistent to about 10 to 15 pet, the curves reported by different authors differ by factors of 2 to 4 at the same temperatures. This uncertainty may account, in part, for the failure to establish a successful correlation between the self-diffusion rates and other physical characteristics of the metals. No satisfactory theory of metallic self- diffusion has as yet been proposed to account for all the existing data and to permit estimation in other metals. Experimental Part: Two units of radioactive iron were used in these experiments, each a mixture of Fe53 and Fe59 (12). Fe53 decays by K electron capture and the emission of an X ray with a half life of about 4 years. Fe59 emits two beta spectra, one with a maximum energy of 0.26 Mev, the other 0.46 Mev, and gamma rays of 1.1 and 1.3 Mev, with a half life of about 44 days. They were present in nearly equal concentration initially. The composite half life started at about 50 days and increased as the Fe59 decayed, leaving Fe55 relatively more abundant. After aging a year, the half life was too long to measure significant decay in a month. The absorption properties also changed with time. Because of the importance of the absorption coefficient in the diffusion calculations, it was necessary to determine this quantity frequently over the period during which these experiments were carried out. This correction was unsuspected at the time of publication of notesl3 on this work and accounts for the discrepancy in alpha iron and for part of the discrepancy in gamma iron.* * The data in the present paper supersede those given in the notes entirely. In one note the scale of log D was inadvertently reversed. In addition to the correction for the drift in absorption coefficient, the D values for gamma iron at low temperatures were high owing to insuficient correction for diffusion occurring during heating and cooling through the high temperature part of the alpha range at a rate much slower than that employed in the runs reported here. The high temperature alpha rates are much higher than the low temperature gamma rates and correspond to large equivalent times at these temperatures. These experiments were discarded and new measurements taken. Independent experiments with the same activity units indicated a radioactive contaminant in the iron, but exhaustive attempts to isolate and identify it chemically failed. These experiments? indicate † These experiments will be discussed in a later publication from this laboratory. that the contaminant represented only a trace of little importance in the diffusion results. The active iron was plated from an iron chloride solution. Enough of the solution was dropped on a 1% in. square of filter paper to wet it thoroughly.

The Park City District, Utah, is situated in the Wasatch Range at the intersection of the westward extension of the axis of the Uinta Range. Ore has been mined almost continuously from the first discovery in 1869 to the present day, with a total production of over 14 million tons. Sediments of Carboniferous to Triassic age have been folded into the northerly plunging Park City anticline and subsequently modified by thrust faulting, diorite and diorite porphyry intrusions, and strong east-west normal faulting during the Laramide orogeny. Younger andesitic volcanics partially cover the eastern edge of the district. The ore bodies occur as both lode and bedded replacement deposits over widely scattered localities. Near surface, high-grade silver "bonanza" ores were mined in early days from the Ontario and Daly Lodes, which occur along the east-west zone of faulting near the center of the district. Other lode or fissure deposits were found along the Mayflower and Hawkeye faults to the east and southeast. Large bedded replacement silver-lead-zinc ore bodies associated with east-west zones of fissuring, have been mined from favorable horizons in the Park City Formation in the Daly West and Judge mines. A series of long, narrow, high-grade, replacement ore bodies occur in the Silver King mine at a single horizon in the Park City Formation. Ore is currently being mined from strong bedded replacements in the Humbug Formation near the apex of the Park City anticline. Factors controlling ore deposition are: magmatic source, structural feeder systems, and favorable host rocks. Ore deposition along favorable beds is primarily a function of physical conditioning and secondarily of chemical composition.

T SEEMS almost sheer presumption to attempt' to discuss Russia in its present chaotic political and economic condition, and were it not that at least two certain absolute factors are continuously at work, it would be impossible to' even approach the subject with any degree of intelligence. These are the inborn love of peace of the people and the national character of the cooperative movement. The love of peace inborn in the soul of every Russian, the desire to be left alone and to- live his life among his home village surroundings, is probably one of the two greatest factors that will make the continuance of the present conditions of civil war impossible. One army or the other may sweep up and down the country. but the Russian peasant will: remain in his own village if not literally darken out. This love of peace is evidenced by the fact that there is no country where personal safety is greater than in Russia in normal times. I have traveled in many isolated parts, carrying considerable sums of money and persolial equipment that; in itself, would be a fortune to any peasant, and have never even encountered a condition in which the most wildly imaginative person looking for adventure, 01: trouble, could muster up even a suspicion of fear. This statement applies also to Southern Siberia and Northern Turkestan, which are inhabitated by the nomadic tribes of Khirghese origin.

Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company is currently mining in four pit areas; Live Oak, Red Hill, Thornton and Joe Bush Extension, near Globe, Arizona. Small satellite orebodies lying outside the main pits have been mined out in a series of small open pits. Major slope instability has affected production in every pit. Some consequences of the instability have been; (1) Serious interruption of mining plans, which resulted in deferred ore production, lost ore, reduced mining rates and increased stripping requirements. (2) Forced replacement of crushing facilities. (3) Serious effects on other production facilities. The introduction of a slope stability monitoring and control function as an integral part of mine planning has been successful in reducing the impact of these failures and will eventually result in economic pit design based on probabilistic slope analysis. This case history presents a brief review of the problems associated with slope instability at Inspiration's mines followed by a more detailed report on one specific failure area in the Thornton pit where the use of horizontal drain holes for slope stabilization appears to be successful. Relationships between slope movement rate, rainfall, and mining activity are shown.

It has been shown for an important class of complex transition intermetallic compounds (a, P, R, 6, and p phases) characterized by "normal" coordination [CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, CN16/ that interatomic distances nay be calculated to a good approximation as the sum of characteristic atomic radii. Two radii, one for major ligands and one for minor ligmds, are specified for each atom, except in the case of CN12 where only a miaaor-ligand radius is specified. The same appears to be true of transition-metal phases of simpler struc-ture: Laves phases (CN12, CN16), and p-tungsten phases (CN12, CN14). In the case of known examples of the more complex phases, a simple rule is given which specifies these radii. However, only a fraction of the known examples of the simpler phases obey this rule closely. To include the latter phases the rule may be modified by considering the radii as linear functions of the weighted average of the Pauling CN12 radii of the two kinds of atonzs, with the radii weighted according to the over-all chemical composition of the alloy. With very few exceptions interatomic distances for both tlze complex and the simpler transition phases can b$ predicted with this modified rule to within 0.06A. ManY intermetallic compounds are known of composition A,By, in which A is a transition element to the left of the manganese column in the periodic table and B is a transition element in or to the right of it. Frequently the coordination numbers (CN) found in these compounds are CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, and CN16 (called "normal" coordinations by Frank and Kasperl). Well-known examples are the cubic and hexagonal Laves phases which have CN12 and CN16, and the 0-tungsten (CrsO) phases which have CN12 and CN14. In the more complicated (often ternary) phases, such as the a phase,2 the Beck phases p3 and R~, the 6 phase,5 and the p p atoms occur with CN12, CN14, CN15, and (except for a) CN16; in many cases several crystallographically independent atoms of one particular CN occur in the asymmetric unit. A large number of independent interatomic distances are found in these complicated phases, varying from 20 in the a phase to 94 in the 6 phase. These distances show a large spread; they vary, for example, from 2.358 to 3.278A in the 6 phase. In our analysis of these distances we found that in each of these compounds every atomic position can be characterized by either one or two radii. The CN12 positions are characterized by a single radius, The higher coordinated positions are characterized by two radii, namely: the CN14 positions by 4 in the direction of the twelve "5-coordinated" ligands3 (called 'minor" by Frank and Kasperl) and by r:, in the direction of the two "6-coordi-nated" ligands (called "major" by Frank and Kasper); the CN15 positions by r15 for the twelve minor and r:, for the three major ligands; the CN16 positions by rlE for the twelve minor and r:, for the four major ligands. We have expressed the experimentally determined interatomic distances in observational equations as the sums of the appropriate pairs of these characteristic radii and the value of these radii have been determined by the method of least Squares. Despite their wide range, the interatomic distances could then be predicted by the sums of these atomic radii with an average deviation in any one compound of 0.06A or less. The results are summarized in Table I. Inspection of the radii thus obtained shows that in the structures in Table I the radii (in A) are given to a first approximation by the simple relationship: Where CN is the coordination number (12, 14, 15, or 16), and A = 1 for major ligands and = 0 for minor ligands. The interaLomic distances can be predicted within about 0.1A by sums of these atomic radii. Another phase belonging in this group with CN12, 14, 15, and 16 is the y phase & B7, in which A is molybdenum or tungsten and B is iron or cobalt. Recently the M%C phase has been refinedE and the observed distances also agree well with those calculated with Eq. [I]. (In the original determination of the structure of W6FeV7 the F$(II)-W(II1) distance was erroneously given as 2.84A, but we have recalculated it fro? the published parameters and found it to b? 2.57i4, in good agreement with the value of 2.6A predicted with Eq. The manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In certain respects they have a strong resemblance to those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia, but in this paper no careful comparison with them can be made. Viewed from the present condition of the manganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments. Youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide in the rocks of both groups. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate degree of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flows, largely of basic types. This has been named the Birrim System. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. Since these non-fossiliferous strata at many plaees are of a character which in many parts of the world are suitable for the preservation of fossils, and which contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim System have normally a northeast-southwest strike, and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts. From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed diagonally across their strike for upwards of 600 miles, to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence they probably extend much farther into French territory.

WE all remember when, a few years ago the preparation of coal was nothing but a matter of having somebody at the face or somebody in the railroad car pick out the impurities; also the sizes were generally' made" over a bar screen. Anything that was black was coal; and the only matecia1 picked out was the slate or rock-impurities that could be distinguished by eye or by hefting. This was all right as long. & coal could be sold at. a good price. After all, we are all in business to -make the most money honestly out of a certain acreage of coal and a certain plant. For this purpose what is required is the greatest possible recovery of marketable coal and the highest market price.
