There is an alternative theory of the high grade orebodies of the Middleback Group, based on the primary nature of the high grade ores in an area of carbonate deposition, with lesser amounts of siliceous and aluminous sediments. The environment is thought to have been unstable, possibly volcanic, and to have been a subsiding basin, substantially isolated from the open sea.Jaspilites, iron bearing talc rocks and iron bearing carbonate rocks were derived from the primary sediments by metasomatic alteration after metamorphism.The metasomatic agents were carbon dioxide and water vapour which were mobilized from the primary dolomite and reacted with a metamorphically produced group of iron bearing and iron free amphiboles, forming talc and progressively releasing silica and iron oxides from the iron amphiboles.The talc rocks in turn released silica which reconstituted jaspilites into their present 200 ft thick crust or zone.The theory accounts for the present disposition of a jaspilite zone over a talc zone which in turn overlies a carbonate zone, and accounts for the down dip changes found in bores which penetrate these zones.INTRODUCTIONIron Duke (Fig. 1) lies some 34 miles south west of WhyalIa in South Australia, and is the most southerly ore body in the Middleback Ranges.The Middleback Ranges are divided into a northern range and a southern range meridionally disposed and separated by an erosion gap called Kimba Gap.The South Middleback Range contains four orebodies;Iron Duke at the southern extremity, Iron Duchess north of Iron Duke and on the same ridge, Iron Knight also on the same ridge, which has been breached by erosion between theDuchess and Knight orebodies, and north east of Iron Knight, the Iron Chieftain.Cook's Range is the eastern range of the South Middleback Range and no large orebodies are known to occur there.

El presente trabajo describe la transformación de la mina abandonada Santa Bárbara en un centro de turismo cultural basándose en la recuperación y manejo sostenible de su patrimonio minero. Para ello, se revisa el decreto Legislativo Nº 1042 y el Decreto Supremo Nº 003- 2009-EM, donde se establezca las pautas del cierre de minas y así adoptar medidas para rehabilitar el área ocupada por la actividad minera. Una vez rehabilitada dicha mina, podría ser utilizado para usos educativos, lúdicos, turísticos y sociales, convirtiéndose en una actividad económica favorable para Huancavelica.

Regulatory pressure to mitigate the cement industry’s environmental impact has intensified recently, spurring innovation in low-carbon cement technologies. In the United States, cement production, consumption, and carbon emissions are accelerating. Despite this trend, the adoption of environmentally friendly dry clinker production technology with combined preheater-precalciner systems has surged from 53.3% in 2002 to 88.5% in 2019. Concurrently, reliance on wet technologies, known for their higher environmental impact, has dropped from 16.5% to 0.6% within the same period. This paper presents the results of our comprehensive study, utilizing over 100 years of industry data, to analyze these technological shifts and their environmental implications.

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dyke/stock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions.

This report is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines describing methods and practices at various mines throughout the United States. A previous program, conducted from 1928 to 1939, was well received by the mining industry and technical institutions and provided much source material for engineering textbooks and technical handbooks. The stringent wartime demands on the mining industry, the rapidly changing postwar economic situation, and greatly accelerated technologic growth have combined to render many of the previous data obsolete. The objective of the present program is to assemble reliable technical information on mining methods and practices throughout the country and present it for the use of the mining industry, technical schools, textbook authors, and other interested persons. This report deals with the design and development of the Berkeley open- pit mine at Butte, Mont., owned and operated by The Anaconda Company. The Berkeley pit is but one facet of a well-organized and integrated copper-mining operation involving the entire Butte district. Vein-type mining, important for 75 years, is still in progress at depths from 600 feet to nearly 1 mile; on intermediate levels, low-grade ore left untouched by earlier vein-type mines is being extracted by block caving entire ore zones,3/ and secondarily enriched but lower grade near-surface portions of the same ore zones are being mined by open-pit operations (fig. 1). The Berkeley pit itself is named for the Berkeley mine, one of the old mines that extracted copper ore from high-grade veins in the area that now will be mined by open-pit methods.

Con la finalidad de seleccionar una alternativa que beneficie el tratamiento de estos minerales, se inició un programa experimental que evalúa el proceso de lixiviación en pilas a nivel piloto. En este sentido, el presente texto analiza la correlación de parámetros existente entre las diferentes escalas de experimentación que van desde el nivel de laboratorio hasta el pilotaje, a fin de plantear formulaciones matemáticas que faciliten el escalamiento de data y racionalizen mejor el proceso de lixiviación en pilas.

Effective chemical grouting represents a technical and economic solution to many challenges related to soil stabilization and blocking the flow of water. Chemical grouts are facing increasing demands in durability, environmental impact and value. To better meet these challenges, a novel and cost effective process was developed to produce a sodium silicate that increases the ratio (i.e. silica to alkali) beyond what has been used in traditional silicate-based grouts. The move to a lower sodium form of silicate was anticipated to have two desirable performance enhancements; a reduction in leachable sodium and improvement in the durability of the silicate grout. An in-depth study was performed at the University of Western Ontario Geotechnical Research Centre to quantify improvement in durability as well as other performance properties such as compressive strength. The study began by first modelling the gelation time and reaction kinetics of the high ratio sodium silicate over a range of silicate concentrations using two different setting agents as well as with/without a hardener. As expected, reducing the level of sodium produced a much more water resistant grout. These same formulations also showed a four order magnitude reduction in permeability. Somewhat surprising, test results showed the higher ratio silicate having much higher compressive strength. At the time of this abstract, the high ratio silicate was moving to the trial stage for geotechnical applications while the petroleum industry was further along with several successful field trials for water blocking as well as cement remediation. This paper will review the chemistry, testing and features of this next generation form of sodium silicate. Introduction Sodium silicate based grouts have been used for decades for soil stabilization and water control. Over the years, several silicate-based systems have been tailored for specific application conditions to maximize performance and reduce cost. Past research has also focused on the selection of setting agents and hardeners for silicate grouts. A constant in the development effort has been the grade of sodium silicate. The vast majority of chemical grouts have been formulated using a ~3.2 ratio sodium silicate. As a very brief overview on the meaning of “ratio” and why it is so important to performance properties. The ratio describes the proportion of sand to alkali or SiO2:Na2O used to make different grades of sodium silicate. Comparing a 2.2 ratio to a 3.2 ratio, it is easier to polymerize and set the 3.2 ratio. Upon setting and forming a silica gel, the system has higher compressive strength values and improved durability with a reduced level of syneresis (i.e. shrinkage). This leads to the question if 3.2 is better than 2.2 why not go to 4.2 or higher?

"Falcon Concentrators Inc. has developed a high capacity centrifuge for the recovery of fine, free gold as well as other metals and minerals which were previously thought to be unrecoverable by gravity means. Development started in the early 1980's and the first commercial operation was commissioned in 1986. Gold applications include scavenging conventional gravity and cyanidation circuit tailings, cleaning gravity concentrates, cleaning flotation concentrates to melting grade, scavenging flotation tailings, and placer mining. Recent development work by Falcon has expanded the applications scope of the centrifugal concentrator to include many minerals amenable to gravity concentration including iron, tin, industrial minerals, and hazardous wastes. This paper discusses this technology including its history, present applications, and future potential. OVERVIEW OF CENTRIFIJGAL CONCENTRATIONUsing centrifugal force to enhance the separation of materials by differential specific gravity has been researched for over a century. Many attempts have been made to concentrate minerals in high gravity fields. Patents were granted on this subject as early as 1891 (see Figure 1). Patenting activity continued into the 1920's and has been relatively quiet since. It is significant that no centrifugal system of gravity concentration has been broadly accepted by the mineral processing community until recently. Much of the world's reserve of mineral deposits which are amenable to conventional gravity concentration technology (coarse-grained) have been mined and therefore there is an increasing demand for technology which can economically recover the fine-grained gravity recoverable minerals in the remaining deposits. In addition, centrifugal concentration can play an increasing role in solving environmental problems by offering an inexpensive method of concentrating hazardous materials such as uranium, plutonium, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals. The overall cost of disposing of these substances safely can be drastically reduced if they are recovered into a concentrated form prior to disposal."

There are a number of hurdles that must be negotiated in order to design an effective gold ore treatment facility such that the expectations forming the basis of project economics are valid and can be achieved in practice. Selecting samples based on geometallurgical context, performing and interpreting testwork relevant to the selected process flowsheet are essential considerations towards achieving this aim. Incentivado pela diversificação dos produtos em aço, a demanda por graus cuja composição química esteja próxima da faixa peritética, tais como os aços HSLA (High Strength Low Alloy) e AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel), tem aumentado. As crescentes exigências nas propriedades mecânicas e a redução de custo nas ligas são as razões para que esses aços sejam projetados próximos à faixa peritética, com o teor de carbono entre 0,09 e 0,16%. A produção de placas do aço ASTM A588-B, com o teor de carbono visado igual a 0,10%, apresentava expressiva variação do Nível de Aço no Molde (Ou Mould Level Fluctuation, MLF), aumentando a probabilidade de ocorrência de “Break-Out” (Rompimento de Pele) e a redução da qualidade de superfície das placas, com eventual ocorrência de Trincas Longitudinais. Outra limitação é a impossibilidade de troca de largura das placas, dependente da estabilidade do processo de Lingotamento Contínuo. Serão discutidas as ações tomadas visando a redução do MLF, baseada em alterações no Projeto de Liga, a comparação entre variáveis-chave do processo de Lingotamento Contínuo de Placas em dois cenários de Projeto de Liga além dos impactos em características de Propriedades Mecânicas do produto laminado, no caso bobinas processadas em Laminador Steckel.

Componentes de alto custo como rodas ferroviárias estão em pleno desenvolvimento a fim de aumentar o desempenho em operação. Para isso, diversos materiais microligados têm sido testados para obter melhores propriedades mecânicas e metalúrgicas. Esses materiais estão fortemente sujeitos a fraturas devido às solicitações térmicas e mecânicas durante o trabalho. Muitas dessas fraturas frágeis são ocasionadas por propagação de trinca, impacto, fadiga ou alguma falha metalúrgica. Essas fraturas e riscos operacionais vêm aumentando gradativamente com as maiores cargas transportadas. Portanto, novos materiais e processos produtivos devem ser exaustivamente testados a fim de garantir alto desempenho e confiabilidade. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar as propriedades dos materiais atuais e de diferentes composições de aços microligados de rodas ferroviárias de vagões, fabricadas pelos processos de fundição e forjamento. As amostras foram submetidas a ensaios metalográficos, mecânicos e de tenacidade à fratura. Foram avaliadas rodas convencionais, microligadas ao vanádio e microligadas ao nióbio. Nas rodas forjada e fundida, foram observadas propriedades de tração e dureza similares, e superioridade para o microligado em relação ao aço convencional. As rodas forjadas apresentaram melhor resistência ao impacto e a tenacidade a fratura, destacando-se a microligada ao nióbio.

The corrosion of aluminosilicate refractories by soda from three different sources has been studied by microscopic methods. Sodium sulphate from oil ash, sodium chloride used in glazing structural clay products, and sodium borate from borax-impregnated wood ash have fundamentally the same effect on the refractories. The soda is the chief medium of reaction and fluxing, the sulphur, chlorine, and boron being volatized as sulphuric, hydrochloric, and boric acids.INTRODUCTIONBecause of their strong fluxing action, alkalis are one of the main causes of corrosion and slagging of refractories.The action of potash and soda on refractories follows somewhat similar lines, although it is common for one alkali to be greatly in excess of the other. The course of the reaction in a number of cases of alkali attack has been studied by microscopic and chemical methods. For example, the action of potash on blast furnace refractories was studied by Kraner (1942) and Rigby and Richardson (1947), who described the occurrence of various potassium aluminium silicates. Its action on cement kiln refractories was described by Brisbane, Segnit, and Weymouth (1957). The action of soda on glass tank refractories has been studied by many people, for example Bisby (1956) and Resch (1954). Following the experimental work of Denny, Robson, and Irwin, and the clinical investigation by Crombie and Blaisdell, an investigation of aluminium therapy was begun at Washington, Pa., which is situated In a very large industrial section of the State. Some of the men to be studied were from plants manufacturing silica brick, refractories used in steel and glass manufacturing, and semi-porcelain table-ware; others were workers in foundries, sand blasters, and men engaged in the quarrying of ganister rock.This group of workmen gave an opportunity to study the effects of aluminium on various types of silicosis which differed somewhat from that found in hard-rock miners.EXPOSUREIn their occupations, the men studied were exposed to silica dust concentrations ranging from 17 to 97 per cent free silica. In the silica brick industries, the unfired product averages 96 per cent silica in the form of quartz, whereas the fired brick contains 50 to 62 per cent. cristobalite plus 11 to 80 per cent. tridymite, forms of silica that, on account of their higher solubility, are more toxic than quartz. The operational dust counts in the plants varied from 15 to 9,500 particles per c.c., and the median particle size from the aerial samples was 1.0 micron for the green product and 2.0 microns for the fired product. The length of exposure varied with the occupation as well as with the individual plant, but disabling silicosis could be produced in less than four years in certain exposures. The average time needed to produce radiological silicosis in those susceptible to this disease was eight years. Some of the men in our series of cases have been treated as long as fifteen years after exposure had ceased, and have improved under treatment.The dust counts mentioned above had been reduced prior to the aluminium therapy studies and the presen.t exposures do not exceed '900 particles per c.c., the average being 370 particles. per c.c. This improvement in dust conditions was due to improved dust control apparatus, which was installed before aluminium therapy was instituted. Aluminium powder is not a substitute for dust control.PATHOLOGYThe pathological picture of silicosis in men engaged in the ceramic industry is somewhat different from that in hard rock miners." FOR a number of years prior to the world war, the firm of Geo. H. Thacher & Co., of Albany, N. Y., was engaged in the manufacture of marine and other gray-iron castings. At -the outbreak of the war the firm decided to specialize in the manufacture f propeller wheels. It attacked the problem, therefore, from a foundry point of view, seeking to produce a casting that would be so accurate that no subsequent machining would be required on the blades, also from the point of view of the ship builder. There were two general methods f manufacture, the shortcomings of which have been freely acknowledged. In the sweep method, the nowel, or bottom half-mold, for each blade is swept up by a spindle beam and pitch race, while the top half-mold for each blade is built up individually. In the pattern method one individual blade, with the hub or hub portion, is mounted on a spindle and the individual -blade mold formed, the pattern is then rotated on the spindle to the position- for the next blade, etc. In rare cases wheels were made from a solid pattern. Owing to the cost of the pattern, its failure in many instances to be correctly made, and (when made of wood) its early and sure distortion the disadvantage of this practice is obvious, while metal patterns in most instances were prohibitive in cost. In these methods both green-sand and loam molding was practiced. The casting produced by either method can be considered only as a blank from which the propeller must be machined. The back surface f each blade must be chipped too the templet and through this procedure chipped to such accuracy, as will be required for a static balance. Inasmuch as the' work done by the machine tool is confined to the driving face of the blades, not only is perfection most difficult, but corrosion will be greater because of the removal of the dense skin f the casting and the local strains set up by the pneumatic tool in chipping. To produce a finished 9-ft. propeller for a Navy destroyer required from 8 to 21 days f foundry work and about the same length of, time for the machining. Through the use f the Thacher process, only as many hours are required, besides it is possible to produce a finished casting in perfect conformity, with any particular propeller-wheel design,

Geochemical projects in progress or recently completed in the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology, and Geophysics (BMR) cover a wide range of topics and include research projects, regional studies, and prospecting programmes. However, in these notes emphasis is given to projects which are directly relevant to mineral exploration.FIELD INVESTIGATIONSStream sediment sampling, rock and soil sampling, and geobotanical surveys have been used by the BMR in a number of areas, partly in attempts to locate specific zones of mineralization, and partly to investigate the effectiveness of the various methods under different conditions of climate and topopraphy and in different geological settings.Stream sediment sampling has been most successful in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. For example, in the South Sepik area, zones of disseminated su1phide mineralisation were found to give rise to anomalies with peak values of up to 1,000 p.p.m. copper, compared with background values of about 40 p.p.m. (Dow et al., 1968). By contrast, the results of rather limited work in the Northern Territory and in the Kimberley district of Westen Australia were inconclusive.Rock and soil sampling, on the other hand, was successfully used in a number of areas in Northern Australia, particularly at Rum Jungle and Tennant Creek.Rum Jungle area In the Rum Jungle area, where uranium and base metal mineralization is mainly associated with a Lower Proterozoic black slate sequence, samples, of c-horizon soil or weathered 'rock are generally collectedfrom the bottom of drill holes, usually 15 to 20 ft deep, bored with a power-operated auger.Surface sampling indicates that such a technique would probably have shown up all the major geochemical anomalies delineated by deep sampling, but the latter gives slightly more consistent and slightly

This paper is one of a series pre-pared to study the role of fuels and reductants in metallurgical processes, especially from the viewpoint of Canadian requirements. The object of these studies is to provide a reason-ably authoritative interpretation on the interrelation of fuels in light of the considerable changes that have taken place in the Canadian energy field during the past few years. Previous papers in this group have dealt with the problem generally, and specifically in terms of the development of the iron and steel industry of Western Canada. These latter papers, presented at the Symposium on Iron and Steel in Western Canada held in Edmonton, Alberta, on September 8-9, 1959, surveyed the ferrous processes of interest for use in Wes tern Canada, especially with regard to solid fuel requirements. At that time it was evident that there was a need for a similar study of the fuels aspect of the non-ferrous metals industry.
