A mining engineer from South Africa, whose research has taken him to some of the world?s deepest gold mines, is the winner of the St Andrews Prize. Daniel Limpitlaw, 27, picked up a cheque for $25,000 for his dissertation on reversing the damage done by early mining technology, which he claims is partly responsible for blighting the urban environment in many South African cities. Launched in October 1998 by the University of St Andrews and international energy company Conoco, the St Andrews Prize sought practical solutions to environmental problems. It attracted interest from 450 individuals and groups from countries as diverse as China, Pakistan, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, the UK and the United States.

El presente trabajo describe los resultados de las pruebas de laboratorio en la planta electrolíctica de zinc en La Oroya, a fin de recuperar los valores de zinc y planta de los residuos generados en dicho proceso. En ese sentido, se ha determinado una clasificación-espesamiento previa a la flotación, considerando solo el tratamiento de los residuos gruesos. Una vez realizada esta primera etapa, se prevee el tratamiento tanto de los residuos finos como de los gruesos en circuitos separados. Asimismo, se describe las características de los residuos de lixiviación, la flotación, los resultados de las pruebas de escala piloto y los procesos alternativos para el tratamiento de los mismos.

A procedure was developed for recovering metal values from copper-smelter fume. The fume is first leached to neutrality with dilute sulphuric acid to obtain a solution of zinc sulphate containing a low level of impurities. The tailings from this leach are treated with hydrochloric acid in two stages, in which tin and zinc are quantitatively leached and recovered as a tin concentrate and a zinc sulphatelzinc chloride solution.About 80 per cent of the lead sulphate is converted into lead chloride, which can be recovered as a pure product.Data on the effect of temperature, acid concentration, aeration, and solid/liquid ratios on the hydrochloric acid leach are presented, and the fate of the most important metals during the recovery process is described. Alternative treatments of the tailings from the neutral sulphuric acid leach were briefly investigated.

The process for bio-remediation of sulphidic slag (BROSS) operates at 45 degrees C in a neutral (pH 7), aerobic aqueous environment in which sulphide in the slag is converted to sulphate. A two-stage version has been developed that involves quantitative chemical pre-oxidation of total sulphide to thiosulphate, followed by complete biooxidation of thiosulphate to sulphate. Ferric hydroxide, also produced, acts as a flocculant in the bioreactor effluent, concentrating heavy metal precipitates in the thickener as a sludge which can be returned to the smelter. The process has a high sulphate production rate and low acid and nutrient consumptions. Microorganism growth is the rate-limiting stage, requiring a minimum liquid residence time in the bioreactor of about 7 h. Although large quantities of oxygen are needed, sufficient gas mass transfer can be attained in an air-lift reactor. Products are an aqueous stream containing sodium sulphate with only trace levels of toxic heavy metals and a benign, toxic metal-containing sludge

O pick-up de nitrogênio no aço deve ser evitado nos processos de fabricação em uma Aciaria de alto desempenho. Entretanto, o pick-up de nitrogênio pode ocorrer em inúmeros pontos na Aciaria, principalmente quando o aço líquido é exposto ao ar atmosférico. Alguns locais de controle têm grande relevância no resultado do pickup, tais como: durante o vazamento do aço do convertedor para a panela, no refino secundário durante a agitação excessiva do aço e no lingotamento contínuo devido a aspiração de ar atmosférico nas conexões. Neste trabalho, o foco do controle da incorporação de nitrogênio é no lingotamento contínuo e, para efeito de estudo, tomou-se como referência um pick-up de nitrogênio de até 5 ppm. Os dados históricos mostram que menos de 64,6% das corridas encontravam-se com pick-up de nitrogênio abaixo de 5 ppm. Assim, visando reduzir esse pick-up foi proposto um ajuste no ângulo da sede da válvula longa, melhoria do projeto do gasket e capacitação da equipe de operação. Após a efetivação dessas ações de controle esse número passou para 97,7% das corridas lingotadas.

The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

Excessive noise and high vibration are inherently associated with equipment used in the mining, extraction, and processing of mineral resources. High vibration degrades structural components, often leading to catastrophic failure and loss of productivity, and excessive noise can result in permanent hearing loss. In order to foster efficient utilization of the Nation's mineral resources and minimize occupational hazards associated with mineral processing, the Bureau of Mines investigated the relationship between the microstructures of carbon and alloy steels and cast irons and their damping capacities (ability to absorb vibration). Researchers measured damping capacity and other properties and investigated the effects of carburizing, spheroidizing, and annealing. The investigators found that in carbon and alloy steels, rounded colonies of fine-grained pearlite in a ferrite matrix correlate well with low damping capacity. Steel microstructures that exhibit sharp-faceted pearlite in ferrite matrix and partially or fully spheroidized cementite in ferrite show considerably higher damping. In cast irons, the lowest damping capacity is associated with nodular graphite microstructure, and the specific damping capacity (SDC) increases as the graphite micro-structure progresses from nodular to compacted to flake. Predominant ferrite in cast irons is also associated with good damping. SDC data are presented for selected carbon and alloy steels and cast irons.

At temperatures near 1000°C, only the (112) (111) slip systems are operatire in tungsten. Therefore, the substructure introduced into the billet upon rleforming a single crystal by rolling at 1000 "C can be controlled by proper selection 01. processing ral'iubles. Using a reduction of 10 pct pel- pass, the (001)[110] and the (110)[001] crystals will deform by duplex slip rip to a 50 pet reduction in thickuess. These rolled single-crystal sheels are characlerized by anisotropic hardening, retention of ductility with warm working, lattice bending which is related to the conlacl (angle, and macroscopic dimensional changecs in the length bid not the width of the billet. When several slip systems become operative, a greater degree of work hardening is itztvoducetl into the crystal. This rolling- condition is characlerized by isotropic hardening, loss of ductilily with warm working, complex lattice distortions, and macro-scopic dimensional changes in both the length rind Width of the billel. IN tungsten, the {1 10}(111) slip systems are operative below room temperature,' while above 700°C only the {112{ (111) slip systems are observed.2,3 In the transition region, i.e., room temperature. both systems appear. It is the purpose of this investigation to show that tungsten single crystals deformed by rolling at a temperature where only one slip system is operative generate dislocation substructure which depends on the crystal orientation. For a specific crystal orientation. the resulting dislocation substructure can be further influenced by modifying the rolling procedure. Crystals oriented for multiple slip display less substructural sensi- tivity to modifications in processing techniques than do single crystals oriented for duplex slip. Under simple slip modes of deformation, very little work hardening is introduced into a rolled single-crystal sheet. Mechanical properties such as room-temperature strength. ductility, and hardness are used to confirm the existence of the different work-hardened conditions generated within the crystal by modified warm-rolling techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material. Single-crystal billets of four different crystal orientations. grown by the Arc-Verneuil technique. were ground to a size of 0.25 by 0.375 by 3 in. In terms of their rolling plane and rolling direction, the billets had the following orientations: (1101 [001 ] (110) [110] (001) [110] (001) [100] The actual orientation of all crystals was within 5 deg of the ideal orientations. The typical impurity content of the crystals is given in Table I. Polishing and Etching. Polishing was done elec-trolytically in a 20 g per liter aqueous solution of NaOH at approximately 10 v. It was established by the Laue back-reflection X-ray technique that the surface damage due to grinding and cutting operations with a diamond wheel did not exceed 0.001 in. Therefore after each cutting or grinding operation at least 0.002 in. was removed electrolytically from the surface in order to eliminate surface effects. By lowering the voltage to 3 v, subgrain boundaries and individual dislocations are identified in agreement with Berlec 4 where the etch-pit traces on a cubic plane form a square. The etching time was about 5 sec at room temperature. Rolling. Rolling was carried out on a Loma 2-high mill (Model 600). The peripheral velocity of the 6-in.-diameter rolls was 500 in. per min, with the surface temperature of the rolls about 400° to 450° C The billets were heated before each pass for 30 min in argon to 1000 C. Oxidation of the crystals during rolling in air resulted in a thin layer of greenish-yellow WO 3 This oxide was removed after each pass by immersing the crystals for a few minutes in a boiling NaOH solution. Prior to the initial rolling pass, a surface layer of 0.001 in. was removed by polishing. The crystals were then annealed in vacuum (10-4 torr) at 2400 C for 30 min. O fósforo é um dos elementos mais importantes do processo de produção de aço em convertedores a oxigénio, devido à dificuldade de remoção durante o processo de sopro de oxigénio e depois do vazamento para panela de aço. Este trabalho mostra resultados obtidos através da alteração em variáveis de processo como o consumo de cales, teor de FeO na escória e uso de fluorita, durante o sopro e a avaliação da partição de fósforo com base em modelos de autores como Healy, Turkdogan, Basu e Suito, foi realizada utilizando os dados industriais da aciaria da ArcelorMittal Tubarão, com objetivo de comparar estes dados com as abordagens citadas. Um software termodinâmico foi usada para cálculo das atividades, da fração de líquido e do fósforo em equilíbrio, com a finalidade de auxiliar a identificação das principais diferenças termodinâmicas entre os dados experimentais e correntes. O resultado final mostra que as alterações realizadas no processo foram significativos para melhorar a taxa de partição de fósforo.

Since successful industrial lignite-burning equipment was developed in 1925, the commercial use of lignite as a fuel for power plants has increased. It has proved an entirely satisfactory fuel for generating power and can be burned efficiently by various methods.4/ Equipment to fire pulverized lignite was installed and used successfully at the Trinidad Station of the Texas Power & Light Co. as early as 1926. The lignite was predried in steam-heated grid driers before pulverizing.5/ This method of firing was used later in the Comal Station of the San Antonio Public Service Commission.6/ Both stations, however, have since been converted to use other fuels. Units for pulverizing and drying lignite are relatively new in the lignite-consuming region of North Dakota. The air which sweeps the pulverizer and transports the pulverized product to the burners is preheated to dry the lignite during pulverization. The first unit was installed in 1948 in one of the two boiler units of the Crookston Station, Otter Tail Power Co., Crookston, Minn.7/ In 1951 the 30,000-kw. W. J. Neal Station, Central Power Electric Cooperative, Inc., Voltaire, N. Oak., was designed and constructed for firing pulverized lignite exclusively. It is the largest lignite-fired, power-generating station in North Dakota. The 44,000-kw. Lewis and Clark Station of the Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., Sidney, Mont., is fired by a similar pulverizing system. Operation of this plant was begun in October 1958. At Fergus Falls, Minn., the 53,500-kw. Hoot Lake Station of the Otter Tail Power Co., also using a pulverized lignite-firing system, began operating in September 1959.

No âmbito da inspeção de segurança de caldeiras, a norma regulamentadora NR-13 estabelece a necessidade de um sistema de gerenciamento de integridade estrutural (SGI) com requisitos mínimos para atestar a segurança do equipamento. Entretanto, visando estabelecer um SGI que possibilite maior acompanhamento do equipamento e melhor direcionamento dos reparos instaurou-se um sistema de inspeção com procedimentos mais abrangentes. Esse trabalho apresenta as técnicas de ensaio não destrutivo (END) utilizadas usualmente na inspeção de segurança de NR-13 e novas como o ensaio IRIS (Internal Rotary Inspection System) [1]. As condições estruturais foram comparadas com as recomendadas segundo os códigos de projetos internacionais. Além disso, técnicas de estatística de engenharia de manutenção e projeto foram utilizadas, permitindo quantificar a segurança de operação e programar o momento da intervenção para o reparo.

The use of helical piles as a deep foundation option has considerably increased in the recent years to support a variety of loads, from small loads for several applications such as residential housing, solar farms, utilities and retrofit projects, to large loads for many applications such as commercial, power transmission lines, oil facilities and industrial applications. Therefore, it is necessary to qualify and quantify their axial capacities and performance characteristics. This paper presents the first full-scale axial compression and tension (uplift) testing program executed on large capacity helical piles installed in cohesionless soils. A total of eleven pile load tests using either single or double-helix piles with shaft diameters that varied between 324 mm to 508 mm (12¾ in to 20 in) were carried out, including seven axial compression tests and four tension (uplift) tests. The results of the axial compressive and tensile pile load tests as well as field monitoring data of helical piles installed in dense sand are presented in this paper. Based on the results of this study it was found that helical piles have developed significant resistance to axial compressive loads up to about 2920 kN (656 kips) and tensile loads up to 2900 kN (652 kips).

A crescente preocupação com a qualidade da cerâmica vermelha e com o uso racional dos recursos naturais utilizados por ela, tem motivado a diversas pesquisas em busca de uma otimização de seu uso. Atualmente o setor produtivo, localizado no Norte do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, no município de Campos, conta com mais de 100 cerâmicas que fazem uso de um método empírico para formulação de massa cerâmica, tendo como principal consequência à perda da qualidade de seus produtos, isso e fruto da insuficiência de estudos dos solos em diferentes pontos das jazidas utilizadas. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a caracterização, através de ensaios de granulometria, Limites de Atterberg e análise química para um conhecimento dos solos a serem utilizados na composição da mistura. Este conhecimento traz maior percepção quanto a algumas dificuldades a serem enfrentadas pelos processos produtivos. Com os resultados encontrados pode-se dar algumas diretrizes iniciais para uma melhor adequação na formulação das misturas, diminuindo o empirismo e aumentando a qualidade dos produtos.

Neste trabalho a estrutura cristalina do carbeto de tântalo (TaC), que é um material extremamente duro, com elevado ponto de fusão e elevada estabilidade química, foi analisada por difração de raios- X e pelo método Rietiveld.Para isto, o carbeto de tântalo foi obtido a partir do precursor tris(oxalato)oxitantalato de amônio hidratado, através de reação gás-sólido e sólido-sólido a baixa temperatura (1000°C) e curto tempo de reação, e foi caracterizado através de Difração de Raios-X (DRX), Refinamento Rietveld e Micróscopia Eletronica de Varredura (MEV). Através das analises de DRX e do refinamento Reitiveld para o TaC com S= 1,1584, observou-se a formação do carbeto de tântalo puro com estrutura cúbica e tamanho médio de cristalitos na ordem de 12,9 nanômetros.

This paper describes certain analytical methods used at the Rosepery Mine and Treatment Plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd., which are not generally in use and may therefore be of more interest than a description of the normal routine methods which are used in most of the mining assay laboratories of the Commonwealth, and which have been published previously.The ore mined and treated at Rosebery is of a complex nature and demands closer control in the concentrating plant than is necessary on some other similar mining fields.It is necessary for the mill shift supervisors to keep constant control on the grade of lead and zinc concentrates produced on their respective shifts, and further, it is essential to maintain an economic compromise between grade of concentrates and the recovery of the particular concent:t:ate. This necessitates a more frequent check on concentrate grade tp.an is provided by the daily assays carried, out by the assay office. Rather than employ trained ,assayers on shift work, "quick methods" of analysis, which could be carried out by the operators, 'were adopted.'In such methods, it is desirable that the necessary manipulation should be reduced to the following:-a. Taking the sample, drying and mixing.b. Weighing the necessary amount of sample-for assay.c. Adding the reagents for use in the assay without change of beakers.d. A rotating disc of precipitant zinc in a single stage flow reactor was used to study the effects of deposit mass on the reaction kinetics of copper cementing on to zinc from dilute aqueous solutions.The reaction rate is controlled by external mass transport and the mass transfer coefficient (relative to the original precipitant area) is dependent on the quantity of deposit present. For deposit masses up to about 0·3 mg/cm2 the mass transfer coefficient (first order rate constant) is that expected for the counter-diffusion of reactant and product cations through a laminar boundary layer to a smooth rotating disc. For depositmasses from 0·3 mg/cm2 to about 5 mg/cm2, the mass transfer coefficient increases significantly with deposit mass. For deposit masses greater than 5 mg/cm2 and at least up to 12 mg/cm2, the mass transfer coefficient has again a constant value which is some four to seven times the initial ("deposit free") value. The rate constant for the entire range of deposit masses studied (0 to 12 mg/cm2 ) can be expressed empirically as a cumulative normal distribution of the logarithm of the deposit mass.The enhancement in the mass transfer coefficient for deposit masses greater than 5 mg/cm2 relative to the initial mass transfer coefficient depends on the local operating conditions and increases with increasing disc rotational speed. This enhancement is, however, independent of the previous history of reaction rates.
