Ground behaviour in the vicinity of a roadway has been investigated using a physical model and in situ tests during a roof fall. It was discovered that behaviour of the ground is governed by irreversible displacements of adjacent rock clusters. The cluster is a short-living sector of a rock mass that moves as a solid body. For the lack of degree of freedom, the rock mass must be divided into clusters that are forced to move one after another in space and in time. These clusters permanently rearrange and reform during irreversible (inelastic) ground deformation. The crowded clusters have to yield to each other and alter their velocity and direction of movement to accommodate their motion into the excavation. Such behaviour involves uneven and irregular vertical deflection and the movement of adjacent rock blocks in the roof, sides and floor of an opening. Such movement destroys the symmetry of horizontal displacements with respect to the centre line of the opening. A set of indicators that a roof fall is imminent has been identified. Horizontal displacements and dilation must be controlled in order to maintain the stability of an underground opening. Such a state retains the self-supporting effect of the roof and contributes to rock bolts bearing capacity.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo principal sintetizar e caracterizar nanopartículas de ferro de valência zero (nFVZ) para degradação de substâncias recalcitrantes, através de Processos Oxidativos Avançados. A primeira etapa consiste na sintetização nFVZ, através da reação utilizando reagentes ferrosos, com o agente redutor borohidreto de sódio, em condições controladas (pH, temperatura e velocidade de agitação do sistema). Agentes complexantes e dispersantes, como o ácido cítrico e o etilenoglicol, respectivamente, foram utilizados durante a sinterização para avaliar a variação da formação do tamanho das partículas obtidas. A caracterização foi realizada através dos ensaios de distribuição de tamanho de partículas, microscopia óptica interfacial e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET). Foi observado que a concentração de ácido cítrico de 0,009 mols e o volume de 100 mL de etilenoglicol, mostraram-se como os melhores valores obtidos. Todavia o ácido se tornou um interferente na reação ao ser utilizado com o SDS. Os resultados da microscopia eletrônica de transmissão comprovam que as partículas obtidas estão na escala nanométrica.

Mineral resources all over the world are often heterogeneous and have variable ore properties and ore grade. As a result the ore processed in concentrating plants varies over the life of mines. Consequently the circuits often suffer from bottlenecks typically at the stages of crushing, semi-autogeneous (SAG) and ball milling. Bottlenecks may be remedied with equipment retrofits, however, design engineers should consider a phased approach to the circuit design that delays initial capital expenditure over the life-of-mine. This paper deals with the debottlenecking of existing mineral processing plants by means of high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) applications. It also deals with the use of innovative flow sheet designs using HPGRs for the design of Greenfield plants by engineering or mining companies. In the case of Greenfield plant design an analysis with respect to energy efficiency and operating cost (OPEX) is presented. The analysis compares the performance of SAG based circuits against HPGR circuits that may be influenced by variable ore properties. Globally about 600 HPGRs are installed in various applications in the cement and minerals industries. In excess of 100 of these HPGRs are used since the mid 1980s for crushing and grinding of various ore types including æhard rockÆ applications. HPGR technology is mature enough to be considered as an ideal debottlenecking device. HPGRÆs are versatile, they have a low installation footprint and they are flexible in its machine settings (pressure, roll speed), which can be adjusted to react to ore variations whilst maintaining a high throughput. Examples for the benefits of using HPGR in terms of energy efficiency and operating costs are presented by this paper. æEco-efficientÆ flow sheets and sustainable development initiatives are linked to energy savings as an æenergy costÆ and benefit to the environment. Energy savingsÆ can also be analysed in terms of the ædollar costÆ (OPEX) savings. This paper demonstrates that HPGR is more energy efficient and may reduce the overall grinding energy requirements in the order of 16 per cent depending on the target grind size and ore properties. The HPGR is more cost efficient and may reduce overall grinding costs by as much as 19.3 per cent depending on the cost of energy, grinding media and the rate of grinding media wear in the comminution circuit.

A câmara de empuxo do Motor Foguete a Propelente Líquido (MFPL) L75 é composta de uma liga Cobre cromo, classe C18200. A jaqueta de refrigeração, responsável pela extração de calor, é feita de aço inoxidável AISI 316L. No que tange ao processo de fabricação, a união entre a câmara de combustão e a jaqueta de refrigeração é uma etapa crítica, pois envolve processos de união de materiais dissimilares e de componentes de geometria complexas. Este trabalho visa contribuir à fabricação do conjunto motor foguete, por meio da soldagem a laser entre a câmara e a jaqueta. Com o uso de um laser a fibra de alta potência, foi possível verificar que existe uma condição otimizada de solda sobreposta, inox sobre Cu(Cr), com potências entre 1.000 e 1.300 W e velocidades de soldagem de 0,05 m/min a 1 m/min. Embora as análises mostrem heterogeneidade microestrutural, pela dissolução parcial de uma fase na outra, obteve-se níveis de dureza aproximadamente constantes ao longo da profundidade da junta.

Traditionally, mineral processing plants are designed to achieve the highest recovery of valuable material with limited regard for the cost of managing waste products-both solid and water components. As an industry, we are confronting ever more stringent environmental standards and lower grade deposits requiring more intensive processing. The most profitable processing route can, in fact, lead to costly issues downstream. Issues or risks associated with waste management include water treatment and handling and storage of potentially acid generating material. The capital and operating costs of dealing with these issues are significant and should be considered as a consequence of plant design and optimisation. The authors of this paper are involved with a number of projects where process operation changes offer opportunities to mitigate risks associated with water and waste management. Examples of these changes will be discussed along with the estimated benefits to the value of the project and reduction of long-term environmental risks. Process changes include 1) the application of in-plant water treatment as opposed to dealing with the entire tailings management facility and 2) the potential to reduce metal leaching and acid rock drainage through the preferential liberation of carbonate minerals in the grinding process.

ORDINARILY age-hardening is thought of as being associated with a limited solubility of one metal in another. Much less has been written about the type of age-hardening that attends the formation of superstructures. Solid solutions generally have a disordered or random arrangement of atoms; that is to say, in a unit cell, such as that of the face-centered cubic lattice, there is no distinction between atomic sites. Atoms of a given metal may occupy cube corners or face centers. Under certain conditions, however, some alloys develop what is known as an ordered structure. In this case, cube corners would be occupied by only one type of atom and face centers by another type, Associated with this ordering process are many interesting changes in physical and electrical properties. Moreover, in many instances the alloys become susceptible to age-hardening. From the evidence now to be described, it appears that age-hardening in 14-carat gold alloys is due to the formation of both a super-structure and a precipitate. Alloys of the metals gold, silver and copper were known in antiquity. The available knowledge regarding their constitution has been ably summarized and extended by Sterner-Rainer,1 Janecke,2 Carter,3 Wise,4 and Coleman.5 Despite the long familiarity with these alloys and the numerous investigations of their properties that have been made, there is still much that remains unexplained. It has been known for a long time that the hardness of these alloys is closely related to the rate of cooling, Similar changes have been observed in the binary gold-copper system,6 one alloy of which corresponding to the formula Cu3Au, has been the subject of a careful and competent report by the English investigators, Sykes and Evans.7 They have established the fact that the shift of atoms from the ordered to the disordered condition takes place in some critical temperature range. At temperatures above the critical range the structure is random, and at temperatures below it the structure is ordered. No difference between these two structures is revealed by the microscope. Both have a face-centered cubic lattice and complete solubility, so that there is no evidence to suggest that the changes in properties are associated with a phase change, The more slowly the alloy is cooled, the higher is the degree to which the ordering process proceeds and the more marked is the increase in hardness. As experimental data were accumulated on 14-carat gold alloys, several contradictions arose. Certain observations tended to confirm the existence of a superstructure, while other observations seemed to be inconsistent with such a transformation. Experience is reporled in the operation of the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell, afler it had been reconstructed to obtain better control of the heating of the briquettes in order to produce a strong char suitable for use as a metallurgical fuel. The theoretical Ideal Heating Cycle, which had been designed from earlier laboratory research, was closely approached in the carbonizer, and up to 97 per cent of the whole dried briquettes entering the carbonizer were recovered unbroken in the char.The strength of the char produced in the pilot plant was limited by the performance of the drier where the cracking and breakage of the briquettes was more severe. Theoretical studies have indicated that this limitation could be removed by using a hot briquette feed to the pilot plant. Experience indicates that with a hot briquette feed to the drier and with ideal heating in the carbonizer, hard char could be produced from Yallourn briquettes in continuous operation.The project has been terminated for economic reasons...

Owing to the increased consumption of sulphuric acid; Australian manufacturers have, from time to time, been seeking for a satisfactory source of sulphur that would make them independent of foreign supplies.Some years ago a considerable amount of acid was obtained from the roasting of Spanish pyrites. This ore, in 1913 or thereabouts, cost 16s. per ton f.o.b. Huelva, and freight to the eastern seaboard of Australia was about 20s. per ton. As the ore contained 48% to 50% of available sulphur, it was costing roughly 9d. or 10d. per unit, and, in addition, the cinder, after roasting, was a product of considerable value to smelters, containing as it did a high percentage of iron suitable for fluxing, and appreciable values in silver and gold.

In the last two decades, there have been nearly no new mining towns built in Canada. Governments and mining companies have viewed long distance commuting (LDC), commonly known as fly-in-flyout or fly-in mines, as a way to avoid problems associated with building a new community and providing for its sustainability after mine closure. LDC is also considered more cost-effective than building a mine town. The intensification of the use of LDC in the Canadian mining sector has been quite rapid, particularly in northern regions. However, LDC has implications to employees, their families and communities, which deserve further examination, particularly considering the significant expansion in Northern mining and Aboriginal participation in this sector. This paper presents a review of the major issues in long distance commuting, both from an industry and community perspectives. It is a result of preliminary investigation for a PhD research project that will be pursued by a Bridge Fellow and UBC Mining Sustainability Working Group member, and guided by an interdisciplinary research team at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The Bridge Fellowship Program is research-training program linking the UBC?s Faculties of Medicine, Engineering and Graduate Studies. Its mission is to develop creative evidence-based prevention measures for public, environmental and occupational health problems. The SWG is an interdisciplinary student group based in the UBC Department of Mining Engineering, committed to respond to the complex sustainability-related challenges currently faced by the mining industry. In other to pursue this project, it is paramount that industry and local communities alike participate in the development and clarification of research questions as well as in the research design. It is hoped that this paper will function as an invitation for industrial and community partners for such study. The main themes identified for this research are occupational health and safety of LDC employees, family life impacts and community health impacts of this model of resource development.

Iodine is a bluish-black, crystalline solid with sub-metallic luster, and has a specific gravity of 4.93. It volatilizes (sublimates) at ordinary temperatures into a blue-violet gas that has an irritating odor. Iodine is the least active of the halogens, all of which readily displace it. Only slightly soluble in water, iodine also dissolves in carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform, giving a deep violet solution. The primary sources for iodine production are sub-surface brines associated with petroleum and natural gas deposits, and as a byproduct from nitrate deposits in Chilean desert caliche. The largest source of iodine is seawater which contains 0.05 ppm, or about 31 Mt (34 million st). Seaweed of the family Laminaria can extract and accumulate up to 0.45 percent iodine on a dry basis. Seaweed was an important source of iodine prior to 1959. However, it remains a significant source of iodine in the diets of many populations throughout the world.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated creep properties of Zn-Cu-Ti alloys that were annealed after finish-rolling either cold) or at 480° F (249° C). Compositions ranged up to 1.25 pct Cu and 0.36 pct Ti. Most data are for sheet annealed after finish-rolling to 92-pct total reduction. Annealing times were varied at temperatures between 320° and 560° F (160° and 293° C). For a number of the alloys, annealing after hot-rolling at 480° F affects creep properties very differently in longitudinal and transverse sheet directions. The detrimental result is that the anisotropy in creep properties between the two directions can be vastly increased. Conversely, specific annealing treatments of certain heavily cold-rolled alloys result in surprisingly low anisotropy in creep properties and the low anisotropy coincides with excellent creep resistance for both directions. Supplemental data are presented on tensile, hardness, and thermal expansion properties, and microstructures.

Abstract A simplified method of fatigue testing full-dimension, as-rolled, non-machined, mining drill rods is very desirable to the mining and steel industries in the classification of steels available on the market, through the evaluation of their fatigue limits and endurance strength. In this paper one such simplified method is presented and analysed. The preliminary results show many advantages of this method, such as simplicity and constancy of loading. The type of loading applied more or less simulates the working conditions of the outside fibres of the mining drill rods. Additional advantages of this method are the possibility of testing under dry and wet conditions, its quietness, and its ease of operation. Specially designed adaptors and specially applied techniques of fixing and preparation of samples make possible the breaking of a quarter-octagon hollow drill rod in a free length of uniform section in a rotating beam machine. At first glance this seems to be difficult to achieve. In the first preliminary test three different lots of steel were used. S-N curves under dry conditions were determined. These curves permit of the classification of the drill rods on the basis of the fatigue limit and endurance strength of the outside fibres of the metal, which is dependent to a greater or lesser extent on the effect of surface decarburization, surface imperfections, and special surface treatments. The average slope of the S.N curve in the damaging zone, and the fatigue limit in equal tension-compression rotating bending, were determined for SAE 1080, chromium-molybdenum and nickel-chromium-molybdenum mining drill rods. INTRODUCTION The fatigue limit and the endurance strength of mining drill rod steels are of interest to both the mining and the steel industries. These industries are greatly interested in lowering the cost of mining by reducing the consumption of these steels per ton of ore exploited.

"Abstract - Enigmatic hydrothermal vein/breccia/replacement Cu-Au deposits with magnetite and/or hematite are well-represented in Australian 1850 Ma to 1500 Ma terrains and associated with different-aged synorogenic intrusions in the Tennant Creek Block (ca. 1850 Ma); the Gawler-Curnamona region (1640 Ma to 1590 Ma); and the Cloncurry district (Mount Isa Eastern Fold Belt, 1540 Ma to 1500 Ma with a possible earlier event at ca. 1600 Ma). No deposits are known to be coeval with various 1780 Ma to 1610 Ma anorogenic intrusions. Deposits are hosted by many different rock-types with varying metamorphic grade including granites and various supracrustal rocks. Depth of mineralization varied from many kilometers in semiductile crust (e.g., Cloncurry deposits) to very shallow (e.g., Olympic Dam). Ore deposition near Cloncurry occurred in brittle-ductile shear zones from geochemically variable and complex, CO2-rich, 300°C to 500°C, high salinity fluids with magmatic stable isotopic signatures. Recently published studies of a giant granitoid-hosted magnetite vein complex at the Lightning Creek prospect (>1000 Mt magnetite) suggest it is a product of internal differentiation and endogenous Fe and Cu-rich hydrous-carbonic fluid phase generation within a quartz monzodiorite-monzogranite intrusion. Coupled with other field relationships, this points to a possible genetic relationship with intermediate (55 to 65 wt% SiO2) members of an alkaline and partly shoshonitic granitoid supersuite which appears to have both mantle and crustal source components from ?Nd evidence. In constrast, main-phase mineralization at Olympic Dam in the Gawler Craton is distinguished by hematite-phyllosilicate alteration and chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite zoning, reflecting fluid mixing in a high level (<250°C) system with a probable large component of meteoric water. Early high-temperature parageneses and fluid inclusions imply that the extensive hematitic breccias overprinted an older magnetite system which may have had similarities with those at Lightning Creek and Ernest Henry in the Cloncurry district.Deposits of this family are inherently difficult to find and evaluate as even within a single district, there is no reliable relationship between the location of ore and any specific combination of geophysical characteristics. Diverse alteration assemblages, geochemistry and physical characteristics suggest the deposits reflect the interaction of multi-sourced fluids with different host rocks in a wide range of geological environments. Recent discoveries and research in the Cloncurry district have extended the range of deposit models available and aid the development of a rudimentary classification in which economic and exploration characteristics can be linked to variations in the mechanisms and environments of ore formation."

The four elements fluorine (F), chlorine (C1), bromine (Br), and iodine (I) form the most intimate family in the entire system of elements and are grouped under the name "halogens" or salt formers (by derivation from the Greek). The first member of this family, fluorine, is the most chemically active element known; and fluorspar, and to a less extent cryolite, the chief sources of fluorine, are important commercial minerals. Fluorine occurs in nature chiefly in combination with sodium as common salt, but it also appears in other natural compounds in sea water, salt-well brines, and bedded deposits. In addition to common salt, various compounds containing chlorine (chlorides) have long been consumed by industry on a large scale, and within the last two decades that element itself has come rapidly into prominence as one of the leading industrial chemicals. Bromine and iodine, the two retaining members of the family, are less abundant in nature and less readily isolated and in consequence of their relatively high price have found few industrial uses, being consumed chiefly in medicine and in photography. Bromine, however, is now entering the industrial field to a considerable extent, due to the rapidly growing use of ethylene dibromide in anti-knock compounds for gasoline. The present paper is devoted to bromine and iodine, but in order to compre- hend the physical and chemical characteristics of these two elements (and hence their potential economic significance) it is convenient to consider them as members of the family series to which they belong. The family relationship of the halogens is illustrated by the following:4 (1) The similarity in the chemical and physical properties of the elements and their corresponding compounds is such that the prop- erties of any one member of the family can be said to summarize or rather to typify the properties of all the other members, although fluorine diverges a little in some of its properties. (2) The gradual transition of chemical and physical properties is such that if the elementa are arranged in order F, Cl, Br, I the variation in any particular property in passing from fluorine to iodine nearly always proceeds in the same order, and that is the order of their atomic weight. Taxing almost any property and comparing its magnitude in passing from the element fluorine to iodine, or from the fluorides to the iodides, a similar graiation will be observed. Thus, take the melting point of the cadmium, calcium, barium, sodium, or potassium salts, in degrees.

El método de minado es un componente importante de la estimaciòn de reservas, y el beneficio del proyecto está condicionado a la habilidad de minar selectivamente. En ese sentido, los métodos de lixiviación fallan en proveer estimaciones imparciales de mineral recuperable y exponen el proyecto a un riesgo indebido. Por ello, se preveó otro método alternativo como el Condicionamiento Uniforme y las Variables de Servicio donde las estimaciones puedan ser deducidas de un conjunto de simulaciones condicionales, que requieren menos hipòtesis pero consumen más tiempo. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala la variación de las reservas recuperables de acuerdo a la selección de método de estimación. La aplicación de tres métodos de estimación no linear- en un depósito de cobre se comparan con asunciones teòricas y las caracterìsticas geológicas del depósito. La performance relativa de cada método es evaluada por comparaciòn de las curvas de tonelaje-ley y contenido metàlico sobre un cut-off lìmite.

At the 1990 Symposium of the Society of Explosives Engineering, D.T. Froedge, President of GeoSonics Inc., presented a paper entitled "Differential Topographic Vibration Isomapping", which detailed the capabilities of GeoSonics' new Iso-Seismic Service. In this paper Mr. Froedge described how one hundred or &ore free-standing miniature seismographs called Micro-Seis Units, randomly positioned around a blast, could accurately reveal the effects of sub-strata geology on surface ground vibrations. The paper went on to note the "regression analysis of scaled distance versus recorded particle velocity" as being an inadequate predictor of peak particle velocity. This is due to the fact that the calculated "regression analysis" formula for any site is predicted on the wars; case assumption because of a homogeneous and symmetrical sub-strata geology, a condition that rarely, if ever, exists.

A evolução da microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas de dois aços inoxidáveis duplex foram estudadas via microscopia óptica e de varredura, ensaios de dureza e tração. As amostras dos aços inoxidáveis duplex foram laminadas a frio com percentual de 18,50 e 62% para o aço S32304 e 21,52 e 64% para o aço S31803. As amostras com 62 e 64% de redução foram recozidas a uma temperatura de 1055ºC com 20 s de encharque. Os resultados mostraram o efeito da deformação a frio na espessura das lamelas de ferrita e austenita, sendo este mais pronunciado na austenita. O aço inoxidável duplex S31803 apresentou maiores valores para o limite de escoamento e dureza devido ao maior percentual de molibdênio e nitrogênio, elementos que atuam como endurecedores por solução sólida.

The backfill system at Cleveland Potash?s Boulby Mine places waste filter cake underground in the form of a high concentration slurry in worked out areas of the mine reducing the mine?s environmental impact. The backfill system delivers slurry approximately 1100 m down the mine and up to 11 000 m horizontally underground. The Boulby backfill system is unique in that the placed backfill waste is not used for the usual purposes such as support, pillar extraction or reducing ventilation requirements. It was specifically implemented for environmental reasons. This influenced the design and resulted in some unique features of the system. A previous paper (Wilkins et al., 2004) described the design and commissioning of the backfill system. This paper describes the operational experience with the backfill system and backfill placement since commissioning in May 2003 and looks at lessons that can be applied in other backfill designs.

IT is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds ;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established.23 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2 : I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. SYNOPSIS OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTS The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microorganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resins may serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium. some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17, 32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. Most, if not all, of the six recognised post-Cretaceous, predominantly andesitic mineralised belts in the region are now thought to be subduction-related magmatic arcs. The Inner Carpathian arc and the Eastern Bosnia or Drina-Rhodope arc host numerous vein and replacement deposits with epithermal features and Zn-Pb+/-Ag as the predominant economic minerals. In contrast, the south Apuseni Mountains have produced over 1 600 t Au from epithermal veins but very little Zn-Pb. Recent age determinations and geophysical data from the Baia Mare district of the Inner Carpathians suggest that mineralisation succeeded volcanism by 1-2 m.y. and accompanied crustal extension and the cooling of a large, mushroom-shaped pluton whose boundaries define the mineral district. In the south Apuseni district, mineralisation can be explained by mixing of meteoric with low-salinity metamorphic water expelled during intrusion of mafic rocks into the middle or lower crust. The more continental or cratonic crust in the Drina-Rhodope and Inner Carpathian arcs precluded the input of low-salinity, Au-bearing metamorphic water; the Zn-Pb deposits formed where convecting meteoric water mixed with saline water, possibly introduced through carbonate rocks in the basement
