Quarries around Auckland have reached or are reaching the ends of their lives, which raises issues about rehabilitation. Significant volumes of 'cleanfill' are generated by the City, particularly during phases of urban renewal and development. Emplacement of the fill in quarries removes the problem of fill disposal and provides an opportunity for restoration of the quarry site.There is a compatibility between quarrying and cleanfilling because at quarries:Truck routes are already established Neighbours are accustomed to the effects and appropriate buffer distances have been established Bringing fill into a site attracts aggregate sales and is very efficient. Fill originates from construction sites and ad-hoc excavations and therefore it is not surprising that sampling has shown the quality to be variable. Both Winstone and the Auckland Regional Council have surveyed undisturbed soils in the region to attempt to determine natural background levels of common contaminant substances. Comparison of these levels with delivered fill shows that a high proportion of delivered materials can be regarded as mildly contaminated. Therefore the term 'cleanfill' is, in the Auckland region at least, a misnomer and the term 'managed fill' has been adopted.Historically and presently the only control on quality of 'cleanfill' has been some visual inspection. This leaves the fill operator open to potential liability for creating a contaminated site. Implementation of controls at WinstoneÆs operations has progressed slowly, over some ten years. This is mainly due to the perception that mobility of contaminants within and out of the landfill will be very limited because of the near-neutral pH and abundance of clay minerals in the fill. The methods of control and results of environmental risk assessments at WinstoneÆs Puketutu Island Quarry will be briefly described.

Introduction The financial statement of the hypothetical Gold Mining Company, which forms the background of this survey, was designed for the Institute with the express abject of having it assessed in respect to Profits by the several taxing bodies representing the Federal and Provincial Governments, which comprise the Dominion of Canada. On the completion of the figures, copies were sent to the several Ministers of Mines, accompanied by a request that they be submitted to their taxing authorities and assessed accordingly. The response, while it was not general, was very favourable, and at all times we were treated with the utmost courtesy and patience, and what has been set forth in the compilation bears the authentication of the various government officials who are immediately concerned with taxation. The data itself constitutes a fairly comprehensive digest of taxation as it directly applies to gold mining profits in Canada. The Hypothetical Balance-Sheet (See Exhibit A) In the balance-sheet schedules 1 and 2 (Exhibit A), income is divided between taxable and non-taxable classifications, and here it should be noted that the division contemplates only the assessment for Dominion income tax. The same applies to the factors of exchange and depletion. Therefore, in making comparisons, it is to be borne in mind that the set-up for assessment to the Provinces, that is, Manitoba and Alberta, will stand as if the gross non-operating income is taxable, with the reservations as shown in the notes below the schedules.

Recent developments in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) once-through supercritical technology (OTSC) have enabled this technology to be offered as a utility-scale alternative competing head-to-head with pulverized fuel (PF) OTSC offerings. One clear example is the CFB supercritical unit at the Lagisza Power Plant in Poland, owned by PoludniowyKoncernEnergetyczny SA (PKE). This unit has now been in commercial operation for three full years, exhibiting very good performance, and has validated Foster Wheeler?s performance model at this utility scale as well as for units in the 600 MWe and 800 MWe size ranges offering net efficiency of ~43 per cent (LHV basis). This operating unit has also proven the use of the world?s first FW/BENSON? vertical-tube OTSC low mass flux technology. Since the Lagisza original international tender specified OTSC PF technology, it is important to note that the alternative selection of CFB OTSC technology over conventional PF technology is of historic significance, not only for the validation of the CFB supercritical platform as a viable alternative to conventional PF technology, but it also positions the CFB OTSC with fuel flexibility for offering of sizes up to and including 800 MWe units. This paper explores the differences between CFB OTSC technology and standard PF OTSC in utility power generation. Selection criteria, fuel burning range in both technologies, and other selection drivers are discussed. Economic analysis of both technologies, based on existing cases, is also provided. Also discussed are the technical advantages and uses of each technology. Foster Wheeler has recently been awarded a contract for four units of CFB OTSC technology, which utilizes a 2 on 1 configuration of two 550 MWe CFB OTSC boilers on two single 1000 MWe turbines. Essentially this provides a fuel-flexible low-emissions alternative to a 2 × 1000 MWe solid fuel power block.

The Hishikari gold deposit, discovered by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, has become a giant class epithermal gold deposit with the highest grade of gold yet recorded in the world through detailed exploration and development by the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd. The exploration strategy involved a regional approach combining geological and gravity surveys over a 900 km2 area which had historically produced over 120 t of gold. These surveys were carried out to grasp the common geologic features of epithermal gold deposits in the survey area. A genetic model for epithermal gold deposits in the area under regional survey was also considered based on detailed research of the Kushikino epithermal gold deposit which was in operation at that time. This model was applied to the targeted areas, and important relationships between mineralisation, host lithology, intensive propylitic alteration and gravity highs became apparent. The Hishikari block was selected in this way and bonanza gold was discovered during drilling. Since the development of the Hishikari mine, information useful for further exploration for the same type of deposit has been accumulated.

"Tulawaka Mine is a joint venture between Pangea Minerals Limited 70% (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation) and Northern Mining 30%. Tulawaka Mine is located in North West of Tanzania in the Lake Victoria Goldfields. Tulawaka Mine is scheduled to process 360,000 tonnes per year at an average 11.5 g/t head grade over a 4 year mine life.The Tulawaka Process Plant uses single stage crushing, single stage SAG milling, gravity, intensive leach of gravity concentrates, CIL, Zadra desorption and cyanide detoxification to process the ore. Gold recovery exceeds (or is expected to) 95%.The Process Plant was designed and constructed under the supervision of Ausenco Engineering of Australia. Site works commenced in January 2004, Process Plant construction commenced in July 2004 and the first ore was presented to the Process Plant 26th February 2005. The first gold was poured on 15th March 2005. All construction contractors were demobilized from site 7th April 2005. Major achievements have been 3.4 million hrs LTI free during construction and operation to date, training of the Tanzanian workforce at Bulyanhulu Mine prior to commissioning, a succession plan to replace expatriate personnel with Tanzanian staff and significant over performance of the Process Plant against design.INTRODUCTIONTulawaka Mine is situated approximately 160 km south west of Mwanza in the western Lake Victoria Goldfields District of north western Tanzania. The property is held under a joint venture between Pangea Goldfields Inc (70%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, and Explorations Minieres Du Nord Ltée (30%). A location map showing the position of the operation in Tanzania is shown in Figure 1.Mine site staff at Tulawaka comprises a combination of Tanzanian and Expatriate personnel. All Pangea personnel live on site and commute to their place of residence for their R&R on a 9 weeks on 4 weeks off roster."

"The development of uppers drilling at Brunswick Mining is reviewed. This paper describes design criteria for drilling patterns and the research required for selection of a suitable drill jumbo. The success of the uppers drilling program based on operating procedures is highlighted. IntroductionBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd., operates a 10 500 tonnes per day lead /zinc/copper I silver underground mine some seventeen miles southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick .The No. 12 orebody, first discovered in 1952 by a group headed by M.J. Boylen, had extensive development, including two shallow shafts (500 ft), and test work carried out on it by St. Joe Lead between 1953-1957. However due to complex metallurgy and depressed metal prices, the operation was suspended.In 1961, a group comprised of M.J . Boylen, K.C . Irving and Patino acquired the rights of St. Joe Lead to the No. 12 property. A concerted development plan was initiated along with construction of the necessary sur face facilities and by July 1964, the property was in production at 4500 tons per day.In 1967 Noranda Mines Ltd. acquired operating control of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd."

Researchers from the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to assess the safety of remotely controlled mobile roof supports (MRS) in a retreat pillar mining operation, Data were collected to provide the Mine Health and Safety Administration with criteria needed to develop guidelines for MRS use and to determine if precursors could be identified that would alert miners to imminent roof falls. Two test sites at which two different support methods-MRS's and posts were used and were monitored to obtain information on entry stability. Pressure transducers and string pots were installed on all four MRS's to obtain loading and displacement information. and roof bolt load cells. sonic probes, extensometers, and survey targets were installed in the surrounding entries to obtain information on ground behavior. Results showed a larger increase in roof bolt loading and roof movement when MRS's were used, especially in the intersection area. Roof bolt loads in the entries showed decreases in load when the MRS's were set and increases up to 11,1 kN (2,500 lbf) when the MRS's were unloaded. Unloading of one MRS in a pair did not significantly increase load on the other. MRS's I and 2 usually had the higher loads, with these loads increasing as the pillars on each side were being mined. MRS 3 normally had lower loads than I and 2: however, it also experienced some very high loads when in the last position near the pushout. MRS 4 usually had the lowest loads, primarily because it was located near the solid pillar that was not being mined.

Ferrochrome is the major chromium source for stainless steel production, and submerged-arc furnaces (SAF) are most commonly utilised to smelt chromite ores into ferrochrome by using suitable carbonaceous reductants such as coke. Because of the complexity of feed structure and electrical-thermal-chemical interactions, there exist large gradients and wide distributions of temperature, mineralogy and other process variables in the furnace. This leads to various zones in the furnace, and different reduction mechanisms. Control of the furnace is thus often difficult due to the complicated physical and chemical situations in the furnace. The temperature profile in the submerged arc furnace has a great influence on the reduction rate and the production efficiency. Therefore, the energy generation through electrical arcs submerged in the solid feed and its distribution within the packed bed play an important role. In the present paper, an overall process model is illustrated to simulate inter-linked transport processes of fluid flow, heat transfer and reduction kinetics within the submerged arc furnace. The application of reaction kinetic data to simulate the chromite pellet/lumpy ore reduction with CO gas is presented and further adjusted to provide a submodel for a flow and heat transfer simulation for the packed bed by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The comprehensive process model is aimed to simulate materials and gas flow, temperature and energy distribution throughout the furnace system. A preliminary model for gas flow and temperature distribution for the upper part of a 20 MW furnace (the packed bed) for high carbon ferrochrome production has been developed under simplified conditions. The integration of the reaction kinetic model into process simulation, and the future vision for a more comprehensive process modelling are discussed. It is expected that better understanding of the furnace insights through process modelling will help process optimisation and furnace control.

"Two 35 foot diameter enviro clear thickeners were tested in series as CCD units from June until October, 1978. Up to shutdown in July, we ran with automatic bed level control via the level probes and underflow pinch valves. Despite extensive efforts, we were unable to eliminate the surges created between the units by the opening and closing of the pinch valves. Early in July, the best rake speed and gap setting were determined. After shutdown, the enviro clears were run by manually controlling the pinch valves. These efforts were successful.A few mechanical problems were encountered while operating the thickeners. New units should incorporate more support for the drive coupling and a rubber feed seal. A few modifications of the instrumentation control scheme will be required before the units can be fully automated. A less sophisticated automatic flocculant addition system will accomplish the desired results. Control of the underflow withdrawal via the pinch valve should be investigated further. Our best results were obtained by keeping the feed volume to the No. 1 enviro clear constant. Surges were controlled by opening or closing both underflow valves proportionately.Capacity of the enviro clears is dependent of many variables. The ore treated during the test program was much finer than that reported on in R & D Project Report 76-02. Conditions were never steady enough to determine best flocculant dosage or addition point(s). The lowest soluble losses were obtained at very high wash rates. The underflow densities drop but the soluble losses also drop. Regression equations were developed in order to assess the effect of the various parameters. Within the range studied, these equations will predict the performance of enviro clear thickeners as CCD units on Elliot Lake ores. Our results show that the enviro clear thickeners are a viable alternative to the conventional CCD thickener."

The famous Golden Mile of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia was, between 1888 and 19ft, one of the richest and most important gold camps in the world. Annual production, which reached a peak of nearly 1,300,000 oz. in 1903, however dropped to below 400,000 oz. after 1920.Depression seized the camp, and many mines closed down. The output from this old field is now steadily mounting under the stimulus. of a higher price for gold. In 1935 300,000 oz. of precious metal were recovered and the future is bright. Total production from the field is 21,400,000 oz., whereas something like £23,600,000 have been paid in dividends.The Golden Mile has been studied by many geologists. Their somewhat diverse findings were published for the most part in the Australian technical press which, unfortunately, is not sufficiently represented in foreign libraries.The following article is based on an eighteen months' study in the district for Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd., preceded by four years' experience with almost identical rock types in the, Porcupine district of Ontario. Os aços inoxidáveis bifásicos superduplex estão presentes em diversos setores da engenharia devido a versatilidade oferecida em termos de propriedades mecânicas e resistência à corrosão. Para garantir a qualidade destes aços, avaliar o teor de ferrita presente na microestrutura é de grande relevância para indústria uma vez que diversas propriedades do material dependem do controle deste teor. Durante a fabricação de equipamentos ou inspeções de campo uma das formas mais viáveis de monitorar o teor de ferrita é através do ferritoscópio, dada sua portabilidade e fácil interpretação. No entanto, observou-se que a forma usual de calibração do ferritoscópio pode levar a medidas imprecisas, principalmente na avaliação dos aços superduplex. A fim de analisar esta influência, foram realizados diferentes testes de caracterização microestrutural através de microscopia ótica, difração de raio-x e o magnetômetro de amostra vibrante, para confrontar com medidas obtidas com ferritoscópio. Conclui-se que para elevados teores de ferrita, a calibração do ferritoscópio realizada a partir dos padrões fornecidos pelos fabricantes apresentam desvios significativos dos teores encontrados a partir da caracterização com equipamentos de laboratório. O presente trabalho apresenta uma solução para utilização do ferritoscópio para uma quantificação mais acurada do teor de ferrita nos aços inoxidáveis superduplex.

In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil , this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states . Information given on each heavy - oil deposit includes the following items : Field and formation , location , average or range of depth , average API gravity of oil , average thickness of formation , areal extent of field , total productive wells drilled in field , discovery date of field , field status in 1963 , cumulative production to Jan. 1 , 1964 , and all known types of secondary - recovery operations initiated ( active and terminated ) in the reservoirs . The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map , and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text . As of Jan. 1 , 1964 , 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place . It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history , such as the one in Missouri , were included , the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels . To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil , industry is developing technology in several types of thermal - recovery methods . Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study for thermal - recovery techniques are : Lithology , depth , viscosity of reservoir fluids , gravity of oil , reservoir thickness , oil in place , and permeability and porosity .

A globalização tem tornado o mercado internacional mais competitivo e o setor brasileiro de fundição cada vez mais é ameaçado pela produção asiática que oferece produtos com custos inferiores aos valores nacionais. O meio ambiente é outro fator emergente nos panoramas atuais, empresas com consciência ambiental sofrem com elevados custos para a disposição correta de materiais. Estes fatores são abordados no atual trabalho que focou na adequação de equipamento para regeneração mecânica de areia, tornando possível a reutilização do principal consumível de moldes de fundição. Tendo como base projeto inicial de equipamento de regeneração mecânica, foram aplicadas melhorias e posteriormente foram trabalhadas variações de parâmetros do processo. Oriunda do processo de cura a frio, a areia fenólica usada destorroada industrialmente foi testada variando a velocidade de rotação do atritor (450 e 900 RPM), e o tempo de permanência (10, 20 e 30 min). Os experimentos em areia foram analisados através de distribuição granulométrica, análise de perda ao fogo e também a limpeza dos grãos via microscopia eletrônica de varredura, sempre guiados pelas referências de areia base e areia destorroada. Analisando os resultados encontrados foi possível identificar a influência das variáveis testadas e assim determinar a configuração mais eficiente na limpeza da capa resina que envolve grãos.

Os aços austeníticos HP são empregados na fabricação dos tubos de fornos de reforma a vapor, sobretudo pela manutenção de sua elevada resistência mecânica e à corrosão, a temperaturas superiores à 700°C. Contudo, intercorrências durante a operação podem causar o bloqueio do fluxo interno de matéria-prima, gerando um aumento rápido de temperatura na parede do tubo, muito superiores àquelas de projeto. Este tipo de falha é conhecido como surto de temperatura, e pode levar à formação de grandes trincas longitudinais no equipamento. As caracterizações das transformações ocorridas no surto são importantes para determinar os parâmetros de detecção dessa condição através de ensaios não destrutivos. Por isso, com a finalidade de analisar a resposta magnética de amostras que sofreram surto, foram avaliados dois casos. O primeiro corresponde a análise de uma amostra proveniente de um tubo de reforma a vapor que sofreu surto de temperatura durante operação. O segundo caso, corresponde a amostras com estado V de evolução microestrutural, que foram submetidas a um ciclo térmico para simular o surto. A análise foi realizada via microscopia de força magnética. Os resultados obtidos mostraram resposta magnética no contorno dos carbetos da amostra surtada em serviço e na amostra com simulação a 1050°C.

Para produção de aço em uma usina integrada o gusa líquido é parte predominante na composição da carga metálica, porém, levando em consideração a sua composição típica e para otimização do processo é necessário que haja um tratamento precedente ao carregamento do convertedor. Teores elevados de silício carregados em convertedores para produção de aço carbono e elétricos provocam um maior consumo de fundentes para neutralizar a sílica gerada durante o processo e maior instabilidade, por outro lado teores muito baixo não fornecem um balanço térmico favorável para utilização de sucata. Diante disso é necessário trabalhar com uma faixa de silício que atenda o mínimo necessário para que se tenha um balanço térmico favorável. Este projeto teve por objetivo modelar a dessiliciação através da adição de um agente dessiliciante e sopro de oxigênio na panela, trabalhando com um teor de silício final entre 0,20% a 0,50 %. A dessiliciação do gusa é realizada em 2 etapas, sendo a primeira quando o gusa é transferido do carro torpedo para a panela e a segunda etapa com sopro de oxigênio. O projeto conseguiu reduzir em 44% a quantidade de corridas fora da especificação, reduzindo dessa forma o consumo de fundentes no convertedor.

"Human factors (HFs) play an important role in the mining and mineral industry, affecting operational and maintenance efficiency and safety. Despite the introduction of new technologies and automation in this sector, it is well known that a significantly large proportion of total human errors occur during the operation and maintenance phase. A comprehensive literature review of HFs across several industries is provided. From this review, the impact of HFs on operation and maintenance is summarized, with a focus on what the mining industry is currently doing and what opportunities exist for additional improvements. Future research directions and themes are also identified.RÉSUMÉ Les facteurs humains (FH) jouent un rôle important dans l’industrie des mines et des minéraux, en ce qu’ils affectent l’efficacité et la sécurité de l’exploitation et de l’entretien. Malgré l’apparition de nouvelles technologies et de l’automatisation dans ce secteur, il est bien connu qu’une grande partie des erreurs humaines (EH) se produisent durant une phase d’exploitation et d’entretien. Cet article propose une analyse documentaire approfondie des FH dans plusieurs secteurs. L’impact des FH sur l’exploitation et l’entretien est résumé à partir de cette analyse, une attention particulière étant accordée à l’évolution de l’industrie minière et aux possibilités d’améliorer davantage ses activités. Sont également identifiés les futurs thèmes et voies de recherche.INTRODUCTIONDuring the past several decades, the mining industry has focused on improving equipment, machinery, and methods that have led to more advanced hardware and software, equipment with higher reliability and productivity, and other technological advancements. These actions have improved safety and productivity and have reduced casualties and maintenance workload. Although today’s mining equipment and machinery are technologically advanced and highly reliable, the risk of accidents is still relatively high and key performance indicators have not improved significantly compared to other industries (Sorensen, 2012). A prominent reason could be due to insignificant integration of human factors (HFs) as part of planning, operation, and maintenance activities. The current mining system is a people system, and inevitably HFs and human error (HE) figure prominently in all aspects of this industry. Even the most advanced technologies and innovations require operators and maintainers with significant knowledge and skill, which could increase the potential for HE."

Na indústria siderúrgica integrada, geram-se vários tipos de coprodutos, dentre estes escoria granulada de alto forno, os pós de aciaria extraídos nos sistemas de despoeiramento a úmido e a seco do conversor LD e o pó de coletor de alto forno. Em relação aos pós, são principalmente portadores de unidades de ferro e carbono, podendo conter também zinco, o que os tornam alvos de estudos e inovações que buscam recuperar ou reciclar estes elementos. No presente estudo foram concebidos briquetes autorredutores usando os pós finos-F e grossos -G, oriundos de um sistema de despoeiramento a seco de aciaria LD, nas proporções percentuais, F – G, de 50-50 e 70-30, misturados com pó de coletor de alto forno. Utilizando como aglomerante o cimento ARI, foram avaliadas as resistências à compressão dos briquetes em diferentes tempos de cura e determinadas suas metalizações nas temperaturas de 1100°C e 1150°C, em tempos que se estenderam até 45 minutos. Adicionalmente, as capacidades dos briquetes de alterarem a temperatura do aço liquido quando adicionados ao banho, foram avaliadas utilizando-se o balanço térmico do sistema briquete-aço liquido, bem como considerados os potenciais de oxidação do processo e o estabelecimento de um sequenciamento termodinâmico para as reações. Os resultados mostraram que os aglomerados autorredutores possuem alta capacidade refrigerante quando adicionados ao aço liquido, o que os enquadra como possíveis materiais alternativos à sucata e pelotas no controle da temperatura do aço nos convertedores LD. Além disso, a alta cinética de metalização do Fe mostrou ser também viável o uso dos briquetes autorredutores na recuperação do metal contido nos resíduos.

Aços inoxidáveis austeníticos com baixa energia de falha de empilhamento estão sujeitos à transformação martensítica quando deformados a frio. Diversos autores relatam que esta transformação segue as relações de orientação de Kurdjumov-Sachs ou Nishiama-Wassermann. Bhadeshia e outros autores vêm sistematicamente contrapondo estas afirmativas mostrando que esta transformação segue a teoria clássica de formação da martensita. A transformação martensítica requer a existência de um plano invariante e um plano de hábito e não apenas uma mudança de orientação como mostrado em muitos trabalhos. Neste trabalho foram utilizados resultados obtidos por ebsd de amostras de aço inoxidável AISI301 deformadas por tração para análise da cristalografia da transformação martensita no nível de microtextura bem para análise de macrotextura, foram usados dados publicados na literatura para um aço AISI 304 cujas medidas de textura em ambas as fases e as frações volumétricas das orientações preferenciais foram realizadas com precisão usando micro-difração de raios-X em um sincrotron. Em ambos os casos os resultados experimentais de textura da fase transformada foram comparados com resultados calculados usando a teoria clássica da transformação martensítica (PMTC) e usando as relações de Kurdjumaov-Sachs (KS) e Nishiyama-Wassermann (NW). A program of stress change and roadway deformation monitoring was undertaken to measure the forward abutment load distribution about a retreating longwall panel at Dartbrook Mine. The results of this monitoring allow roadway conditions observed at various stages of mining to be ranked according to the estimated vertical stress they have experienced. This ranking also provides a means to predict and visualise future roadway conditions at various stages of mining. This paper presents the results of the monitoring and describes the approach developed to predict future roadway conditions. The monitoring results show the vertical stress distribution associated with the front abutment from a longwall goal decreases exponentially away from the goaf edge. The vertical stress distribution peaks at the goaf edge at 5 to 6 MPa stress increase and decreases to 1 MPa within 50 m becoming imperceptible beyond 100 m By scaling this measured distribution to reflect the loading environment, the vertical stress can be estimated for different overburden depths and different stages of mining. Photographs of roadway conditions at particular vertical stress levels provide a way to visualise roadway conditions at various stages of mining in the future
