"As a part of the United States Department of the Interior program for the development and use of Alaska raw materials, the Bureau of Mines is conducting an investigation of deposits f nonmetallic minerals accessible to the Alaska Railroad for use in building materials in the Alaska Railroad-belt area. The results of the investigations, to date, indicate that raw materials for the production of brick products are in plentiful supply as clay in the Anchorage area, as fire clay at Sheep Mountain, and as shale in the Healy Creek coal formations near Healy, Alaska.Shale for the production of lightweight aggregate or Haydite occurs near mile 67 on the Glenn Highway, and preliminary tests give excellent results. Physical tests are new in progress on commercial-size concrete building units made with this aggregate. Another shale deposit in the same formation was located at mile 16 on the Matanuska Branch of the Alaska Railroad, and preliminary tests give comparable results.Natural lightweight aggregate in tree form of pumice and pumicite occurs in Katmai National Monument and has been used with excellent results in lightweight-building units in Anchorage and Fairbanks. These deposits will be investigated in more detail by the Bureau of Mines during 1952.One small perlite deposit near Healy, Alaska, showed excellent expanding properties, and the product compares favorably with commercial perlites being used in the States for plaster and concrete aggregates. Additional investigation by the Bureau of Mines to delimit the known occurrence and, if possible, discover others were planned for the 1951 field season.The pumice from Katmai National Monument also was considered for use as a pozzolan in pozzolan-portland concrete. Tests by the Bureau of Reclamation indicate that the pumice sample submitted by the Bureau of Mines would be satisfactory in strength development but is not outstanding. Natural activity is good and is greatly improved by calcination at 1,4000 F. Water requirements and shrinkage also are satisfactory. However, the material is ineffective in reducing expansion owing to alkali-aggregate reaction; and, if reactive aggregate is used to make concrete, it would not insure against excessive expansion. An attempt will, be made during the 1952 field season to delimit pumicite deposits along the Alaska Peninsula more amenable for use in pozzolan-portIand concrete.Because the Railroad belt has such a rigorous climate, insulation for new construction is of prime importance. Luring the Bureau of Mines, investigation of building materials all samples were submitted for chemical analyses as possible sources of raw materials for the production of rock wool, one of the best insulation mediums. Four areas having deposits of the required constitu¬ents were located as follows: Anchorage area, with Potter limestone and argillite; Cantwell-Windy area, with limestone and shale; West Fork of the Chulitna River area, with limestone and agrillite; and Homer-Seldoyla area, with Seldovia limestone and Homer clay. It was planned to take bulk samples of these formations and submit them for testing during the 1951 field season."

Los métodos convencionales utilizados fueron los de cobre, corte y relleno, etc, siendo aplicables hasta 1848. Posteriormente se utiliza el método de corte y relleno descendente en el minado de ciertas áreas, donde la dificultad de trabajar con otros métodos se presentaba en los pilares, dejándolos abandonados. Es por ello, que la aplicación de este último método es útil en la recuperación de pilares como en el minado propiamente dicho. Asimismo se describe el proceso que comprende: la preparación de la chimenea y subnivel de extraccíón del primer piso, el relleno y finalmente la secuencia de explotación. "

A study of the records on file in the Bureau of Mines reveals that moray fire in coal mines have been started by electrical equipment or circuits. There the fires were of undetermined origin, electricity often was Strongly suspected as the probable cause. While it is unfortunate that positive evidence as to the cause is so often lost in the general destruction resulting from fires, there are many lessons to be learned from fire s in which the origin was definitely established as electrical. For modern high-speed methods of producing coal, electrically operated machinery has become virtually indispensable underground. With increases in the amount of equipment it has not always been necessary to increase the number of circuits in the mine where direct current is mainly used, but it has been necessary to increase the carrying capacity of these circuits. For example, lends such as heavy-haulage units drawing 1,000 amperes or more have brought boat the introduction of 6/0 and "No. 9 section" trolley wires. This has not made the task of fire prevention any easier, for it has meant that circuit breakers s must be set so high that partial short circuits fail to open them, therefore an arc of considerable proportions can be maintained without causing the, beaker to open. Thus, if as fall of roof brought a trolley wire down against a loaded car of coal, an arc might be struck that would ignite they cowl without opening the circuit breaker.

Structural, mineralogical, and textural data from the Tarnagulla Goldfield demonstrate that the area has undergone three significant phases of deformation. The first phase of deformation (D1) predates the intrusion of the Tarnagulla pluton, which has been dated using K/Ar as 391 ¦ 5MY. We regard this pre-granite deformational event as the major regional deformation. Gold-bearing quartz veins have been deposited in dilational sites on west-dipping reverse faults. These sites demonstrate a geometry related both to faulting associated with D1 and the plunge of the F1 fold axes. This evidence, together with chronology of unmineralised ? D2 and D3 faults, the absence of quartz veining associated with D3 events, and the deformation of carbonate-quartz-biotite-sulphide aggregates within Sl by later S2, lead us to conclude that the bulk of the mineralisation was essentially syn- or late D1 . d18O values for fluids in equilibrium with vein quartz from Central Victoria have indicated equivocal support for either a magmatic or metamorphic origin. Our evidence supports a pre-magmatic origin for mineralisation at Tarnagulla and hence tends to favour a metamorphic fluid source.

Este proyecto busca incrementar la fuerza laboral femenina en la unidad minera El Porvenir, para lo que se analizan tanto factores externos como internos. Para el análisis externo se realizó una evaluación en colegios, con el fin de conocer si hay interés en carreras relacionadas al rubro de la minería por parte de las estudiantes de cuarto y quinto de secundaria de los colegios aledaños. Asimismo, se evaluaron institutos y universidades para identificar la cantidad de mujeres que estudian carreras relacionadas con el rubro. En cuanto al análisis interno, se identificó la perspectiva tanto de las colaboradoras propias como de empresas terceras, así como se analizó el grado de aceptación por parte de los líderes y colaboradores.

After scoping out the objectives of this general report, the report reviews the three assigned main themes addressed by the papers submitted to the session: pile monitoring, testing, and data processing. It focuses on later developments and on issues requiring clarification, thereby identifying topics for potential discussion. Pile Monitoring does not bring much novelty, except for the integration of IT on construction sites. As far as testing, new developments focus on internal pile loading procedures while more confidence is being gained with dynamic and kinematic load tests. Significant advances are noted in the interpretation of data, where variability of results are coped with, loading rate effects are being better addressed, and more routine use of Finite element analyses are observed. Several many older problems remain while new issues emerge from more recent technologies and approaches.

La etapa previa a la hidrometalurgia y recuperación por electrolisis en el proceso de producción del zinc, se realiza mediante la tostación. En este proceso, el concentrado de zinc es convertido en óxido de zinc y el dióxido de azufre es expelido. Para realizar este procedimiento, la planta de tostación utliiza 2 tostadores tipo wedge, 3 tostadores de cama fluidizada y uno de cama turbulenta fluidizada. Sin embargo, luego de un análisis exhaustivo, se encontró que los primeros tostadores tenían poca capacidad de concentración, considerándolos inhabilitados. Mientras que los segundos requieren una alimentación especial en forma de perdigones, necesitando una planta perdigonadora que eleve el costo de producción. En ese sentido, el objetivo del texto describe el funcionamiento del tostador de cama turbulenta fluidizada en la planta electrolítica de zinc de la Cerro de Pasco Corporation, como el equipo adecuado para el tratamiento de los concentrados de zinc, sin una aglomeración previa.

De acuerdo a su diversidad biológica, la pila de la lixiviación de La Quinua es única en su género, por lo que es importante la clasificación de los diferentes frentes de minado. Posteriormente, de acuerdo al avance de explotación fue cambiando las características del mineral, facilitando la descarga directo a la pila de lixiviación. Sin embargo, la presencia de finos, arcillas y la poca profundidad de remoción del mineral, perjudicó la extracción de oro, orginando un incremento de inventario de oro en la pila de lixiviación. En este sentido, el presente texto describe los contínuos cambios del mineral y sus características, originando un cambio en el método de lixiviación a través del cambio de los controles operacionales de altura de banco y flujo de riego, en respuesta de pruebas metalúrgicas que se desarrollaron con el tipo de mineral.

Estos índices fueron correlacionados con los valores de cobertura vegetal e Índice Normalizado de Vegetación (NDVI), el primero es el valor considerado dentro de los compromisos asumidos en los procesos de cierre.

El presente trabajo señala la factiblidad del método de explotación "Trackless" en la mina Huarón, Pasco a través del sistema de conjunto semi-mecanizado, donde la formación de la unidad de explotación requiere la incorporación de vetas estrechas en arranque selectivo a las vetas anchas. En este sentido, se evalúa la aplicación de vetas con potencias entre 0.40 a 2.80 metros cercanas las unas a las otras, cuya interceptación se sirva de eje, al tiempo que se aproveche de una sola unidad de limpieza.

"El presente texto señala el proceso de ingeniería donde se evalúa y modeliza la distribución de los desplazamientos y la interacción de la geomecánica de las cámaras de explotación. La modelización se realiza en la mecánica de los medios contínuos y por medio de métodos numéricos, utilizando la técnica de los elementos finitos. Primero, se estudia el modelo geológico donde se obtuvo el modelo geomecánico del terreno rocoso, luego se formula el modelo numérico, incluyendo las excavaciones. Finalmente se plantea el diseño de la configuración geométrica de la mina que ofrece la más segura estabilidad del terreno intervenido y que permite extraer el mayor volumen posible de reservas minerales, con el método de explotación apropiado."

"INTRODUCTIONOne of the outstanding problems in the normetallic industries, and one which involves two of the greatest of these industries, cement and gypsum, is the reaction of Portland cement with calcium sulphate. To all Portland cement clinker there is added in the manufacturing process, a small amount of retarder, as a necessary ingredient of the finished product. This retards the initial set, increases the strength, and adds to the plasticity of the cement so it will have the desired working and setting qualities. The retarder commonly used is gypsum, (CaSOA.2HO), which is the hydrous form calcium sulphate. Calcium sulphate is also available as plaster of Paris (CaSO4 1/2 HC) and anhydrite (CaSO4). The purpose of this inquiry was to determine the form or mixture of forms best adapted for retarder. The problem is complicated by the fact that cement clinker is a complex mixture of calcium silicates and aluminates, and that clinker from different mills, making cement of approximately equal quality, differs considerably in chemical constitution. Thus the same retarder may give very different results with different types of clinker, especially in the percentage of retarder required for the same degree of retardation.It has been known for some time that a small percentage of plaster of Paris will greatly retard the time of set of Portland cement as well as increase its strength and plasticity, but whether gypsum and anhydrite will have a similar effect is as such disputed question. The offects of gypsum have received little consideration in laboratory research because, even though it will not retard a clinker when the two are mixed in the laboratory, as has been noted in some instances, the cement will have a normal set when the two arc mixed in the large tube mill at the plant, so that practically, gypsum seems to be equally as goou as plaster of Paris, and because of the great saving in cost it has been used almost exclusively."

Procedures employing thiocyanate and dithiol complexes of molybdenum have been developed for the determination of the metal in the presence of large quantities of ferric iron. The procedures are developed for field application and it is possible to complete 200 analyses per day with laboratory accuracy. Use is made of sulphuric acid extraction and ascorbic acid reduction in the case of the thiocyanate procedure whilst the reducing system in the dithiol procedure is potassium iodide-sodium sulphite. Using a simple photometer the range of determination possible is 0-10~g for the thiocyanate procedure and 0-5 g for dithioI.INTRODUCTIONOf the many colorimetric procedures that have been developed for the determination of molybdenum only those using the thiocyanate or toluene-3, 4-dithiol complexes of the metal are sufficiently free from interference to be of use in geochemical prospecting. Rapid methods based on both these complexes 'have been developed at the. Broken Hill Division of The University of New South Wales as part of a general programme designed to improve geochemical procedures. Whilst speed rather than high accuracy is the important factor in prospecting, the aim of the programme is to develop procedures which will allow determination of 200· samples per man-day without loss of normal laboratory accuracy for the methods concerned.In most geochemical procedures visual estimation of a coloured complex is used in the determination of the quantity of metal present. At the high rate of sample determination of the improved methods this procedure places severe strain on the eyes. For this reason all methods are designed for determination by means of a simple filter photometer...

Australia's iron ore industry is entering a challenging period with the development of new orebodies, the introduction of new products and the push for further downstream processing. In addition, the recent price reductions for iron ore exports have intensified the focus on reducing capital and operating costs. To assist in these areas, CSIRO is expanding its research capabilities, including the incorporation into CSIRO of the Mineral Processing Laboratories in Perth, which were previously managed by the WA Department of Minerals and Energy. In addition, a large part of the $24.4 million expansion of CSIRO's Pinjarra Hills laboratories in Brisbane will be devoted to enhancing iron ore processing research, providing purpose built laboratories and large process bays.

Various circuits were tried at Mount Isa Mines during the period 1959 to 19G3 with the objective of improving the differential flotation of galena and sphalerite. Many benefits and disadvantages of the various circuits were revealed. An analysis' of ore characteristics and their effect on flotation was made -and resullted in the design of a proposed circuit which is currently in the process of installation.INTRODUCTIONSince 1936 when lead-zinc sulphide flotation commenced at Mount Isa, at least three types of ore have been encountered.Each ore has presented problems to flotation metallurgists.The three types of ore are,1. partially oxidized upper level sulphide ore,2. Black Star ore from the lower levels with its carbonaceous fraction, and3. Black Rock ore which is similar to 2, but more free milling.In retrospect a number of the metallurgical successes of the past were short lived. Often flowsheets or 0perating practices were designed to solve a single metallurgical problem associated with the current ore being treated. As the ore changed the problem would vanish and the method originally taken to counter the problem could become unnecessary or deleterious to the treatment of the new ore. The general lesson learnt from-the past-is-that thetreatment of Mount Isa lead-zinc ore involves a number of equally major problems...

A hard lump char containing only 4 to 5 per cent ash, 0·25-0·30 per cent sulphur and a trace of phosphorus has been produced from Latrobe Valley brown coal by slow drying and carbonization of ordinary industrial briquettes at temperatures between 7000 C and 14000 C. The briquette char can be made with a variety of reactivities by varying the maximum temperature of carbonization; the higher the temperature, the lower the reactivity. The strength of the fuel compares favourably with metallurgical coke made from black coal, though it may not be quite so resistant to abrasion. Experiments in a small experimental cupola indicate that it will make a satisfactory fuel for use in iron foundries. It may also find extensive application as a smokeless fuel in other branches of industry and in household heating appliances.INTRODUCTIONVictoria, like South Australia and Western Australia, is apparently without 'significant deposits of black coal of coking quality but there are huge reserves of brown coal of high moisture content (60-66 per cent) in the Latrobe Valley (well over 20,000 million tons have been proved) and there are other important deposits in the south central portion of the State (Herman, 1952).For three decades Victorian industries, including a few metallurgical firms, have been using the briquettes made at the Yallourn factory of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (S.E.C.). These briquettes, having a moisture content of about 15 per cent and a calorific value of approximately 9,500 B.T.U. per pound, are satisfactory for certain grate-type furnaces but they are not suitable for use in cupolas of other shaft furnaces because they disintegrate badly on rapid heating.

El presente texto describe la historia y las exploraciones realizadas en los distritos de San Gregorio y Colquijirca. Esta última se encuentra dividida en dos partes: Colquijirca propiamente dicha y Marcapunta, que es un yacimiento diferente -en tanto se halla emplazado en rocas volcánicas, mientras que San Gregorio y Colquijirca se hallan en rocas carbonatadas. Los tres yacimientos se encuentran en los Andes centrales del Perú, en el departamento de Pasco, Junín. La mineralización de San Gregorio está alojada en las unidades carbonatadas jurásicas del grupo Pucará, en su facies occidental; la mineralización de Colquijirca está emplazada en forma de mantos plegados en rocas carbonatadas de la formación Calera, correspondientes al grupo Pocobamba, de edad terciaria superior.

This paper describes a situation that many drilling and blasting contractors have found themselves in – a client?s fear of the use of explosives. In the summer of 2007 Blasting Services Ltd was asked to undertake some drilling and blasting work in an abandoned quarry that was being restored for a housing development. Previous quarrying operations had left a series of overhangs that were considered unsafe and required removing. The site contractor considered that the best and safest way to carry out this work was by drilling and blasting. Blasting Services Ltd, with the technical assistance of Exchem Explosives, designed a drilling and blasting regime to accomplish this work with a series of trim blasts. The design took into account the close proximity of a structure in very poor condition and the imposed vibration limit of 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.). The faces were profiled, holes drilled and explosives ordered. A few days before the first blast was due to be carried out the client decided that the poor condition of the nearby structure meant that the use of explosives could not be permitted. This decision was made despite the blast design indicating that the vibration level would be well below the 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.) limit.

Os fluidos de corte são empregados no processo de retificação com o intuito de lubrificar e refrigerar a peça/rebolo, além de amenizar problemas que afetam a integridade superficial da peça e também melhoram a eficiência do processo. Os fluidos de corte são muito utilizados na retificação, porém são tóxicos, dificilmente degradáveis e nocivos ao meio ambiente. Dessa maneira, é pertinente a formulação de fluidos menos agressivos. Neste trabalho, avaliou-se o desempenho de óleos vegetais como fluidos de corte em comparação com o fluido de corte integral no processo de retificação do aço ABNT 4340 temperado e revenido com dureza média de 52 HRc. O desempenho dos fluidos consistiu na análise de rugosidade, formação de espuma e odor. A caracterização dos óleos foi realizada pela viscosidade, densidade, ponto de fulgor, corrosão, índice de acidez total, índice de iodo e de refração. Os resultados mostraram que as peças retificadas com óleos vegetais apresentaram rugosidades próximas às peças usinadas com fluido integral. Na caracterização, os óleos vegetais apresentaram maior viscosidade que o integral e suas densidades foram próximas. No resfriamento, os óleos vegetais foram capazes de resfriar mais as peças que o integral, além de corroer menos. Nos outros aspectos analisados, o óleo de soja foi o que apresentou melhor desempenho. Esses resultados comprovam a eficiência dos óleos vegetais e viabilidade do uso no processo.
