"Modern tundishes have evolved as vessels to serve as the final step in refining of molten steel by removing inclusions and promoting thermochemical homogeneity.In this study the flow behaviour in a four-strand tundish was investigated by means of a ½-scale water model as well as numerical modelling. The numerical and physical models were used to characterize residence time distribution and calculate properties pertaining to tundish flow regime. Three different tundish configurations were investigated: a bare tundish with no flow control devices, a tundish with a turbulence inhibitor, and a tundish with both a turbulence inhibitor and a dam.The physical and numerical models showed that a tundish without flow control devices is prone to significant short-circuiting. A tundish with a turbulence inhibitor was shown to be successful in preventing shortcircuiting and provided surface-directed flow that might assist the removal of inclusions from the melt. However, it was also observed that the upward-directed flow caused the maximum turbulence kinetic energy near the surface to increase dramatically. The potential for slag entrainment should therefore be considered during the design and operation of tundishes with turbulence inhibitors."

The per capita energy consumption in India is 510kgoe/year, the global average being nearly 1818kgoe/year. Correspondingly low is the per capita CO2 emission at 1.25t against the world average of 4.39t.65-70%, at times more, of India?s power generation from about 190,000 MW installed capacity, is however coal fired.India therefore has to secure diversified sources of energy and solar power is increasingly being looked as the real alternative to the existing over dependence on coal. To ensure sustainable solar power it is essential to secure its raw material base that is ?silica?, hitherto considered as ?minor minerals?. That calls for immediately addressing the issues of land availability, solar power cost, developing a dynamic inventory of silica containing minerals, appropriate processing technology and strong regulatory framework for sustainable mining and processing of all silica rich minerals. "This paper presents the development of a new grinding circuit steady-state modeling system. It is fundamentally based on the “functional performance equation”, which has now been used to improve the performance of numerous grinding circuits. This equation characterizes the two distinct efficiencies that are at work in a ball milling circuit, and how these relate to overall circuit productivity. It does so based on the particle size chosen to distinguish between coarse and fine (product size) material. Now, by applying it to all the material size classes, a simple yet reliable ball mill model was created. Combined with cyclone recoveries, the complete, detailed grinding circuit performance can be exactly reproduced mathematically by the computer program. It can then be used with separate process equipment application engineering methods to systematically engineer grinding circuit improvements. The development, features, uses and limitations of the system are described.INITIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CIRCUIT MODELThe Functional Performance Equation for Closed Circuit Ball (or Pebble) MillingIt has been shown that closed grinding circuit performance can be effectively characterized by the “functional performance equation” for closed ball or pebble milling circuits (McIvor, 2006a). One method of its derivation is summarized here for convenient reference.First select a cut-off size to define “coarse” versus “fine” or product size material for the grinding circuit. Any particle mesh size can be used to differentiate between coarse material and fines, but the circuit target P80 is often an effective choice for these purposes.Any energy expended on “fines” is wasted. It also generates “extreme fines” often detrimental to downstream processing (McIvor and Finch, 1991). Only the portion of the mill power draw that is expended on coarse material is effectively used. This portion can be estimated from the mill feed and discharge size distributions (McIvor, 1988a) by taking the average of the percentage of “coarse” material in the mill feed and discharge. We can define the thusly calculated percentage of the mill power that is expended on coarse material in the mill as the ball mill circuit “classification system efficiency” (CSEff). The “effective mill power” (EMP) can be calculated from the total mill power (TMP) as follows."

U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine mineral resources and resource potential in and adjacent to the North fork Smith RARE II study area. Most mineral resources identified in this area are in laterites, highly-weathered residual soil zones. In the RARE II area, resources of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and magnesium were identified at 15 laterite properties and chromium resources at one chromite mine. Other commodities include copper, gold, silver, and mercury (fig. 1). Approximately 1,100 lode and 1,200 placer claims have been located in or adjacent to the area. Most placer claims are for literites. There are no patented claims or mineral leases. Forty laterite deposits on 15 ,properties within the RARE II area (fig. 2) contain about 16 million tons of identified marginal reserves and subeconomic resources containing nickel, cobalt, chromium, an magnesium (table 1). Most deposits have keen explored and are currently claimed. California Nickel Corporation is developing laterites on Gasguet Mountain, within and adjacent to the southeastern and western parts of the study area. If this project proceeds to production, a laterite processing plant on Gasquet Mountain would enhance the minability of other deposits in the study area. The Climax, PFM, DF, and Stone Corral properties (fig. 1, nos. 1, 6, 9, and 23) have deposits of sufficient tonnage and grade to attract mining interest; resources at these properties are in and adjacent to the RARE II area.

A knowledge of the value of the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide in slag as a function of composition and temperature is necessary if effective strategies are to be devised to maximise the recovery of cobalt in nonferrous smelting processes. This work reviews previous studies and shows that comparison and evaluation of the results is hampered by variations in the choice of standard states for the species. Published results have been recalculated to a common set of standard states with a preferred value for the Gibbs free energy of formation of cobalt oxide. It has been shown that the value of the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide referred to the solid standard state in iron silicate slags is approximately two, at temperatures from 1523 to 1623¦K. It is suggested that some contradictory results are most likely due to errors in the measured partial pressure of oxygen.

The effect of metallic iron fines on froth flotation of a sulfide ore was examined by comparing the flotation results with and without iron fines present in the flotation feed. Mild steel and ceramic laboratory ball mills were used to grind 600 g sulfide ore charges. The mild steel ball mill generated approximately 4.6 g of iron fines (0.8% of the ore charge mass) when grinding to a product size of 80% passing 200 mesh (75 mm). When a low dosage of a weak xanthate collector was used in flotation, the impact of the iron fines on sulfide flotation was marked. Higher dosages of stronger xanthate collectors rendered the impact of the iron fines much less significant. Consumption of the collectors by the powdery iron fines is believed to cause the differences observed in the flotation results. A galvanic effect on flotation was not evident in this study. The impact of the iron fines on silicates depression was also examined.

Increasing the throughput of the MMG Century operation by over 25% from past practice to preserve cash flow close to the end of life of mine has revealed new throughput and load dynamic instabilities in the SAG mill causing significant time averaged loss of production. A twelve microphone array around the SAG mill (Pax, 2014) using the non-contact acoustic measurement methodology (Pax, 2011, 2012) has been used to diagnose the new dynamics. Dynamic acoustic noise signal information allows discrimination of the behaviour of the steel balls and the rock. Determination of mill load, toe and shoulder angles, water holdup, and proxies for mill load are possible.The instability was diagnosed with the help of an abnormality in the liners/lifters of the SAG mill with one row of lifters having a slightly increased in-mill life compared to the rest. The steel shoulder angle is observed to be disturbed cyclically at a rate of precisely one revolution at low throughputs of 750 t/h. However, at throughputs closer to 1100 t/h, the cyclic signal disappears indicating additional dynamics to randomise the repetitive behaviour of the mill charge. The cyclic signal has been used to operate the SAG mill with improved stability at 1100 t/h by adjusting the feed water addition rate.This paper presents and discusses these results and proposes the suggested origin of the extra dynamics. A small consistent aberration of the lifters circumferentially provides a useful detector of stable mill operation and a novel sensor for the dynamics of the internal operation of a SAG mill.CITATION:Pax, R A and Cornish, B, 2015. "INTRODUCTION AND RESUMEThe Reward zinc property was one of the first selected for exploration by the Bureau of Mines at time when zinc supplies for war production were very short. Preliminary examination indicated that an appreciable tonnage of zinc that could be developed for early production might be found by diamond drilling. The geology was mapped by the Federal Geological Survey, and 14 holes were diamond drilled by the Bureau of Mines. This work was started in September 1942 and completed in September 1943.The Reward is an old property in southwestern Pinal County, 26 miles from Casa Grande on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Mining was begun in the early 1880's and was continued intermittently by several operators to about 1917. About 400,0oo pounds of copper was produced from the north¬eastern part of the property, mainly from a 600-foot incline in oxidized copper ore that replaced a bed of limestone. This ore was mined out. A 400-foot vertical shaft in the copper area was inaccessible. A 325-foot vertical shaft had been sunk near the southwest end of the zinc-bearing area, and a 600-foot crosscut tunnel had been driven near the northeast end of the zinc area, but little zinc ore was produced. There were several shallow inclines and numerous surface pits between the main workings.The ores were deposited in Paleozaic limestones that strike northeast and dip about 40 degrees northwest. These are capped by Cretaceous clastic and volcanic rocks in the zinc area. The outcrops show mineralization in a segment of the limestone 4,500 feet long, which is limited by large cross faults at each end. Another large fault, which strikes north, separates the northeast third of the mineralized belt from the remainder. Copper predominates northeast of this fault and zinc southwest of it. The ore beds are cut by numerous small cross faults. Ore was deposited for short distances along some of these, but more of it made out from the fissures along certain replaceable limestone beds."

Hydrogen sulphide associated with natural gas was noted as early as at Point Albino, Canada. The presence of this impurity was recognized also in other of the earlier oil and gas fields, although the occurrence was by no means common. However, in recent years, with the development of the producing zones of test Texas and the Texas Panhandle, the Production of "sour" crude has increased greatly and hydrogen sulphide has proved a generally troublesome factor--frequently a major problem--in the drilling and operation of many wells in those areas. The problems arising from the drilling and producing of oil or gas wells in hydrogen-sulphide areas, fall under two general divisions: safety problems and corrosion problems. Mention is made of a third division which is closely related to the other two, that of treating--or the development of processes for the removal of hydrogen iron the standpoint of safety and health hazards, hydrogen sulphide in the petroleum industry has been discussed in a number of publications. Likewise, the problem of hydrogen-sulphide corrosion of production equipment has been given considerable attention in the literature.

Tailings embankments can develop a high phreatic surface if the original design for the embankment does not include drainage facilities or if existing drainage facilities become ineffective. Subsequent raises can develop a seepage surface due to a high phreatic surface that can lead to stability problems. The U. S. Bureau of Mines amended contract J0100013 to initiate this study of horizontal drains in tailings embankments. This study developed a technique for determining the length of and spacing between parallel drains through the use of the finite element model UNSAT2. The analysis is based on the combined output of a vertical planar mesh and a horizontal planar mesh. The slot opening in the drain pipe and the length of the perforated section are determined from an analogy to water well design. The pipe diameter and gradient can be determined from Manning's equation. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first attempt at horizontal drain design using a finite element model. Additional research is recommended in this area.

Experiments initiated by the Bureau of Mines on August 26. 1969, and recent work of others, have demonstrated the effectiveness of ventilation for controlling concentrations of respirable coal mine dust. Substantial reductions in dust concentrations have been attained by increasing the volume and rate of air movement across the face and by controlling the airflow pattern. Ventilation experiments conducted by the Bureau using high-pressure fans as auxiliary ventilation units showed that lace-generated dust could he effectively controlled in five mines employing continuous mining machines. Additional data was obtained on industry installations in two mines using similar ventilation systems. By maintaining an airflow approaching 100 fpm across the entry, the experimental system reduced the concentration of respirable dust by factors as great as 6.4. In all mines where the system was used the face-generated dust concentrations were reduced to below 3 mg/m3. Total respirable dust in two cases was above the 3 mg/m value because of the dust content of the intake air. In some mines. depending upon the type of coal being mined and other dust control factors in use, it was possible to Obtain concentrations of less than 2 mg/m Although the technology for the application of the dust control system investigated is readily available, it is evident that additional engineering studies should he made in each mine where the system is to be applied.

With a price slowly rising above US$35 per ounce gold became a mineral worthy of prospecting and mining endeavour in the early to mid 1970s. Fortune therefore appeared to smile onNew Zealand with its favourable geological environment for gold and past record of major gold production from both hard rock and placer deposits. This was a particularly welcome development as the post war years, including both the base metal exploration boom of 1967/1971 (which produced major nickel, iron and bauxite mines in Australia) and the earlier period of uranium exploration failed to produce any mines in New Zealand with the exception of the small Tui Mine and iron sand mining. Whilst hard rock mining now appears imminent it is 15 years further along the track since the 1967/1971 exploration boom and eight years since the upsurge in prospecting for gold in 1978. New Zealand still has no hard rock base or precious metal mining. This is not for want of proven or potential gold mining situations for these clearly exist at Waihi, Monowai Reef, Golden Cross, MacRaes Flat and elsewhere.

The question of whether the air curtain principle could be used under conditions prevailing in Canadian metal mines was investigated. A vertical, portable BERRY air curtain was tested, at first in a wind tunnel built at Ecole Polytechnique at full scale (8-by 8-ft cross section) to simulate a drift and its lateral connections, and then in the haulage ways of a metal mine under actual conditions. The results permit us to predict under what conditions this type of air curtain is capable of acting as an air stopping or flow regulator and how it could be further developed.

This report describes the first phase of an investigation aimed at obtaining a wider knowledge of the problems involved in smelting titaniferous magnetites. Liquidus temperature measurements were made on selected slag compositions in the titania-alumina-silica-calcia-magnesia system. Both the melting-holding-quenching method and the hot-stage microscope method were used in the tests. Liquidus temperatures of slags studied ranged from 1,217° to 1,667° C. The lowest liquidus temperature of the slags occurred when the difference between CaO plus MgO and Si02 was less than 12 weight-percent. Liquidus temperatures were also lowered when Si02 was substituted for Ti02 plus Al2O3 when CaO and MgO levels were held constant. Improved methods for the measurement of liquidus temperatures on very small samples are described.

US 4,190,436 - In the cyanide leaching of gold ore in tailing or ore dump piles, or gold ore in vats or on pads, the ore is agitated and oxygenated by introducing timed bursts of air, along with cyanide in a cyclic or regulated manner. The leach liquor is drained from the material by providing a continuous flow of air. Fines are homogenously mixed, thereby reducing channelling In the ore bed. The paper gives an outline of the design, installation and performance of a series of mooring and berthing dolphins for a major ferry berth outside the port of Elsinore, Denmark. The Dolphins are large cylindrical bottle shaped and open ended steel piles vibrated into the sandy seabed. They are subsequently equipped with prefabricated fender units. Vehicle access to the ferry is via a fixed ramp and a semi-submerged linkspan. Supplementary passenger access is via a covered gangway steel bridge from an existing gangway facility to a midship door in the ferry«
