As fases microestruturais formadas em pelotas de minério de ferro queimadas relacionam-se às características mineralógicas do pellet feed utilizado e determinam propriedades como resistência física e comportamento metalúrgico do material. O presente trabalho objetiva detectar e quantificar fases microestruturais formadas em pelotas submetidas a diferentes níveis de sinterização, bem como sua relação com a resistência à compressão do aglomerado. Para isto foram interrompidas queimas em Pot Grate, gerando amostras de pelotas queimadas contendo fases características de diferentes temperaturas. Pelotas cruas foram submetidas à análise termogravimétrica para avaliação da perda de água dispersa entre os grãos do minério e da água combinada com o ferro em forma de partículas hidratadas.

"P.T Freeport Indonesia's new SAG mill commenced operation in February 1995. The reclaim system consists of four apron feeders and a series of three conveyors. The feeders are used in various combinations and relative speeds to blend SAG mill feed. It was recognized during design of the control system that effective automatic control would require dead-time and gain compensation. The successful implementation of the Dahlin algorithm to provide variable dead-time and gain compensation is described and compared to Pl control.RésumeL'opération du nouveau SAG de P.T. Freeport Indonésie a commencé en Février 1995. Le système de réclamation du minerai comprend 4 alimentateurs à tablier et une série de 3 convoyeurs. II a été reconnu pendant la conception du système du contrôle que le contrôle automatique demandera une compensation pour le temps de délai et le gain. L'implantation de l'algorithme de Dahlin a été un succès et ii est comparé avec le contrôle Pl.ResumenP.T. Freeport Indonesia inició la operación de un molino semi autogeno (SAG) en febrero de 1995. El mineral es alimentado desde cuatro alimentadores tipo apron feeders y una serie de correas transportadoras. Los alimentadores se utilizan en variadas combinaciones y velocidades para mezclar apropiadamente el mineral que alimenta al molino SAG. Durante el diseño del sistema de control se detectó que el control automático requería de un tiempo muerto y compensaci6n de ganancia. En este documento se describe la implementación del algoritmo de Dahlin, que ha sido exitosa y ha permitido proveer tiempos muertos variables y compensaci6n de ganancia. Ademas se hace una comparaci6n con el Pl de control."

Pastilhas de Urânio (UO2) são empregadas como combustível nos reatores de potência, onde as condições operacionais introduzem elevados gradientes térmicos nas pastilhas. Potências elevadas propiciam a fusão da parte central das pastilhas. O inchamento das pastilhas UO2, decorrente dos produtos de fissão, causa trincamento do material e o estudo do seu comportamento é importante. Esse trabalho avaliou a aplicação de método ultrassônico na obtenção de constantes elásticas. Em função das dificuldades no manuseio do material nuclear, optou-se por um estudo comparativo em pastilhas de alumina (Al2O3). Foram fabricados e usados dois conjuntos de 10 pastilhas de Al2O3 com densidades de 92% e 96%. Foi utilizada técnica ultrassônica por transmissão obtendo medidas do tempo de percurso de ondas ultrassônicas, longitudinais e transversais, usadas para a determinação das constates elásticas do material. Equações relacionando densidade do material e velocidade da onda ultrassônica ao módulo de elasticidade, módulo de cisalhamento e coeficiente de Poisson, permitiram obter essas constantes elásticas, que apresentaram excelente concordância com a literatura disponível para o Al2O3.

A produção siderúrgica em usinas semi-integradas gera vários tipos de resíduos dentre os quais as carepas. No presente trabalho estuda-se o comportamento físicoquímico em altas temperaturas de briquetes autorredutores elaborados com carepa e finos de carvão vegetal produzidos no Rio Grande do Sul, objetivando sua introdução no processo produtivo de aciaria elétrica. Ensaios realizados em laboratório com briquetes industriais confeccionados com estes resíduos demonstraram a potencialidade de utilização destes briquetes autorredutores em processos siderúrgicos via forno elétrico a arco (FEA).

Uma das maneiras mais eficientes de aumentar a campanha dos refratários de conversores é o uso de técnicas de slag splashing e slag coating. Nestes processos, antes de sua execução, a escória de fim de sopro é modificada pela adição de materiais contendo, principalmente, MgO. Escórias de conversor contendo alto teor de FeO tem, como fase de equilíbrio mais provável a magnesiowustita (MW). Este estudo visa determinar se, nos curtos tempos de processo em conversor, e sempre a temperaturas bastante inferiores ao ponto de fusão do MgO, ocorre a dissolução do MgO e a saturação da escória em MW ou se a escória se mantém fora de equilíbrio. Os resultados indicam que a MW é formada e, em muitos casos, sua composição pode ser prevista com razoável precisão através de cálculos de equilíbrio por termodinâmica computacional.

Hydrometallurgical processes can be exceptionally corrosive. This is particularly true in acid leaching processes for copper, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements. In the last five years, several large hydromet plants have been built in North America (Vale - Long Harbour, Baja Mining ? El Boleo and MolyCorp - Mountain Pass). Hundreds of storage tanks, extraction vessels and electrowinning cells along with miles of piping were designed and fabricated to withstand the aggressive environments inherent in these processes. One key element all three projects had in common was the extensive use of FRP in equipment design. As a material of construction, FRP provided equal if not improved durability relative to alternative corrosion resistant alloys at a considerably lower cost. This paper will highlight the extensive use of FRP in these three world scale projects and why it was chosen for each process.

In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 km. Some 500 km south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 km. The Complex was emplaced at several centres along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite. Except in the lower units of the Ultramafic Series sulfide mineralisation is widespread. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide with lesser chalcopyrite pentlandite and pyrite. Four significant zones of sulfide accumulation are recognised and discussed in some detail. Evidence suggests that the primary magma from which the Riwaka Complex was derived was sulfur deficient. It is concluded that the sulfur content of the Riwaka Complex was derived from assimilation of sulfur rich wall rocks during intrusive processes.

The feldspar minerals constitute a group of alumino-silicates of potassium, sodium, and calcium. Barium feldspar sometimes occurs naturally but is very rare. Waitemata Tectonic Event(25 Ma ago) created a subduction system from the northeast of Northland, causing: (1) the emplacement of the Northland Allochthon (24-23 Ma) which provided argillaceous limestone and serpentine to Northland, and minor copper to both there and East Cape (located off Northland then); and (2) Northland volcanism (from 22 Ma), which lacked economic mineralisation. The Kiwitahi Tectonic Event (1714 Ma) caused: (1) a realignment of volcanism - from coastal western Northland, to west of the Hauraki Plains (Kiwitahi); (2) a start to the migration southwards from Northland of (a) the Alpine Fault System towards Marlborough today, (b) subduction towards Cook Strait, and (c) volcanism towards Taranaki-to-Bay of Plenty (initially through Coromandel, Kiwitahi, and offshore west coast); and (3) a start to rhyolitic volcanism & associated hydrothermal activity. The latter caused epithermal mineralisation, providing in Coromandel the best known North Island metalliferous deposits. Andesitic volcanism has been active in both of these two contrasting, subequal belts since 22 Ma. Rhyolitic volcanism and hydrothermal activity was wholly restricted to the eastern Marshall Belt, with an abrupt limit to economic mineralisation at the Volcanic Divide (within Hauraki Plains) and a major change there to basaltic volcanism of the western Searle Belt. The Kaimai Tectonic Event (5-1.5 Ma) caused: (1) a temporary reversal in volcanic migration in the Searle Belt, and a duplication of rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity at Waihi (Marshall Belt); (2) the rotational rifting of both the Central Volcanic Region (by 30¦) and the Hauraki Rift (10¦), causing major curvature of the North Island and New Zealand, and the transfer of the offshore subduction system from Coromandel to East Coast; and (3) an effective end to Coromandel mineralisation. Post-Kaimai Volcanism (1.5-0 Ma) included: (1) andesitic volcanism in the Searle Belt, yielding the western coastal titanomagnetite deposits; and (2) andesitic, and rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity in the Marshall Belt - the latter providing geothermal energy, sulphur, and pumice/perlite deposits. Post-Subduction (Intraplate) Volcanism (10-0 Ma) developed in a steadily expanding northwest region of relative tectonic quiescence, as subduction and its volcanism migrated southwards. Intraplate volcanism was predominantly basaltic, providing excellent aggregate; but less common rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity provided geothermal potential and mercury at Ngawha and at Puhipuhi, and halloysitic clays of extreme brightness elsewhere in Northland. This volcanism has reached as far SE as Mayor Island, providing an early New Zealand mineral resource - obsidian.

O objetivo deste projeto foi elevar a produtividade do pátio de placas do Laminador de Tiras a Quente da ArcelorMittal Tubarão através da alteração do processo de sequenciamento do Laminador de Tiras a Quente com a criação do processo de realocação de placas após a formação da chance de laminação. O trabalho iniciouse com a definição de regras metalúrgicas de realocação de materiais e definição dos critérios operacionais e de atendimento a pedidos para posteriormente ser desenvolvido o software de otimização para a execução da realocação automática de placas na chance de laminação com foco na redução de movimentações no pátio do Laminador de Tiras a Quente. Com a implantação do processo/sistema espera-se conseguir uma redução de aproximadamente 60% nas movimentações de placas para formação da chance de laminação, conforme demonstrado nas simulações com dados reais e consequentemente reduzindo número de paradas de forno em função de problemas de produtividade do pátio de placas visando o aumento da produção do Laminador de Tiras a Quente em torno de 15 Kt/ano.

The gangue in some magnetite ore bodies contains feldspar; the alkali content of the feldspar reduces the usefulness of these iron ores. One method of decreasing the feldspar content in magnetite concentrate is froth flotation. The amine flotation of feldspar from magnetite concentrate was investigated using zeta potential measurements, Hallimond tube flotation tests and laboratory-scale flotation tests. The zeta potential of various feldspars (microcline, albite, anorthite, oliqoclase and anorthoclase) were determined as a function of pH; the point of zero charge ranged from pH 1.4 to 2.5. Hallimond tube flotation tests using two amine reagents were conducted on the feldspars. Hallimond tube flotation tests using six amine flotation reagents were performed on the cobber tails (quartz, albite and microcline) from a magnetite concentrating plant; in all cases, over 85 percent flotation recovery was obtained at pH 8 and 10-5 to 10-4 [M] collector addition. Laboratory-scale (667 grams) flotation tests were performed on the magnetite concentrate in an attempt to float the feldspar which had reported to the concentrate. The effects of three different collectors, two levels of collector concentration, three pH levels, starch and HF acid were investigated.

Ore samples generally require preparation before analysis. Serious problems can occur with contamination degradation and particle size effects. Both grinding element contammation and sample cross contamination havebeen bound to be related to sample hardness and operator technique. For best results with minerals relevant to the steel industry, the use of Siebtechnik-type mills required a combination of careful planning, short grinding periods and intermediate sieving of the sample. The results may be extended to most mineral, rock, and refractory sample preparabons.

The benefication of non-sulfide or non-metallic minerals by froth flotation has been practiced commercially for at least 30 years. In the pioneer stages of development of this flotation art, most of the promoters investigated were fatty acids or soaps that had been found to float sulfide minerals. When commercial application of froth flotation started to assume importance in the late 1920' s and 1930's, a great deal of fundamental research work was done in the laboratory (11-14, 19, 22, 23, 26, 29, 32). Among other subjects, this work included studies of the relative effectiveness of the different fatty acids and their salts on the flotability of various non-sulfide and non-metallic minerals. The successful present-day use of fatty acid and petroleum sulfonate type promoters results from better understanding of the principles of non-sulfide flotation plus the developnent of effective selectivity modifying agents. Many investigators have contributed to a greater appreciation of the numerous interrelated factors involved in fatty acid and soap flotation of non-sulfide minerals. Of these, mention should be made of recent fundamental studies by Tagart and Arbiter (31); Wolstenholme and Schulman (35); Schulman and Smith (28); Wark and his co-workers(3,4) Du FIietz(l5); and J. Leja(24). According to J. Rogers, K. L. Sutherland and E. E. and I. W. Wark(27), "the basic requirements for a 'collector' in flotation are that it shall form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated and that this film should be oriented so that hydrocarbon (non-polar) groups form the effective surface." When modified in that way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince (33)that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to be attracted to the mineral surface, as well as the non-polar group. The commonly used anionic-type promoters for non-sulfide, non-metallic and metallic oxide ores include: 1. Fatty acids, and their soaps and emulsions. 2. Fatty acids residues — "pitches" and "foots." 3. Sulfonated and sulfated fatty acids and so-called "petroleum sulfonates." 4. Paraffin chain salts — sulfonated and sulfated higher alcohols. 5. Cyclic organic acids or salts, such as naph-thenic acid and naphthenates. Certain fatty acids are more effective than others as promoters for particular minerals under certain specified conditions. Some of the more costly fatty acids or collectors of the paraffin chain salt type may give improved selectivity in some instances and are being used commercially in a limited number of operations. Local availability may dictate the choice of the fatty acid used — for example, the use of palmoil fatty acid for flotation of copper carbonate ores in the Belgian Congo. Coconut oil fatty acids have also found limited use.

As open pit mines continue to grow deeper and productivity continues to increase, the management of respirable dust and noxious gases can become a challenge. The natural wind flow in open pit mines is often recirculatory. This recirculation traps dust and gases in deep open pit mines. This problem is particularly acute in high latitude open pit mines due to a phenomenon known as an atmospheric inversion. In the winter, arctic and subarctic regions experience short days and long nights. This deficit of solar radiation creates a situation in which cold, still air accumulates near the bottom of the pit. In open pit mines, this can result in unhealthy accumulations of gases and other contaminants in the open pit mines. In this study, the natural wind flow patterns in and around open pit mines were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program. Two dimensional models were created for a variety of pit geometries. The effect of depth, slope angle, and wind speed on the recirculation pattern in the pit was examined.

The Radio Imaging Method (RIM) is based upon electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation in the coal seam waveguide. The radio geophysics theory underlying RIM was developed by Hill of the national Institute for Science and Technology (Hill, 1984). Recent advances in radio geophysics instrumentation have increased operating range in the coal seam waveguide to almost 3,000 feet. This paper describes RIM longwall panel reconnaissance scans and tomography results.

Com o barateamento dos custos de implantação e inovações em estruturas geradoras de energias renováveis, nos dias atuais a demanda de instalação de fontes renováveis de energia tem aumentado exponencialmente. Porém como toda estrutura estas estruturas estão condicionadas a falhas de vários tipos. Neste trabalho apresenta-se uma análise de falha de uma peça, de uma estrutura de sustentação de um aerogerador de pequeno porte voltado a micro geração de energia. Para a condução da análise da falha foram realizados analises microscópicas, fractografias, análises macrograficas e modelagem em elementos finitos. Assim as causas das falhas foram identificadas, como má escolha de materiais e alguns erros no projeto da peça.

Eyewash safety showers located in remote hot environments may be unsafe to use due to excess water temperature and high risk levels of water borne bacteria such as Legionella. Australian Standard AS 4775 specifies that dispensed water shall be bacteria free and have a maximum temperature of 37.8°C. Legionnaires disease is contracted when water aerosols containing Legionella bacteria are inhaled.Laboratory tests show 30 to 70 times more aerosols are generated by showers operating at 38°C than with showers operating at 25°C. Furthermore, excess temperature in flushing water can cause burn injuries leading to hospitalisation, skin grafts and/or permanent scarring. Excess temperature also increases the rate of reaction to corrosive substances, opens pores in the skin to allow greater dermal penetration and can cause dizziness and fainting by dilating blood vessels and reducing blood pressure.CITATION:Challenor, H A, 2017. The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag compositions. The present report deals with the CaF2-Y203 system for which solidus and liquidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. The information is presented as the phase diagram. All specimen compositions were blended from high-purity materials and encapsulated in Mo or Pt20Rh prior toheat treatment. Liquidus temperatures were determined by ceramographic examination of heat-treated and quenched specimens. Solidus temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis and by electron microprobe analysis of quenched specimens. Terminal solid solubilities were derived by parametric methods. The peritectic system was found to be pseudobinary due to the formation of yttrium oxyfluoride at temperatures near the liquidus. The peritectic point occurs at 7 mole pct Y203 and 1,438° ± 5°C. The terminal solid solubility of Y203 in CaF2 decreases from 7 mole pct at 1,438° C to 1 mole pct at 1,100° C, and the solubility of CaF2 in Y203 decreases from 9.5 to 7 mole pct over the same temperature interval.

The Northland region of New Zealand has a complex geological history which has long been the subject of considerable controversy. Small mineral deposits have been discovered in the past, and some have been mined. Except for aggregates and very high quality china clay, mining is virtually nonexistent at present. Mercury mining is proposed from small deposits in the Kaeo area. Intensive exploration for epithermal precious metals deposits in the past seven years, combined with some recent geological mapping undertaken by the Geological Survey and University thesis students has added greatly to an understanding of Northland's geology. Mapping of the Whangaroa-Kaikohe map sheet at a scale of 1:100 000 by Brown and Laurenson Limited has enabled new geological information to be collated for the first time since 1961, when the last geological map was published. The 'Northland Allochthon' is now observed to be a series of four or more thrust sheets each containing predictable formations. High angle faulting contemporaneous with overthrusting has modified the thrust sheets, and established a series of horsts and grabens. The Pirau Fault is considered to be a major earth fracture.

O trabalho mostra um estudo de caso da ArcelorMittal Tubarão onde, com o objetivo de incrementar a reciclagem de escórias de dessulfuração, foram analisadas as influências do processo de beneficiamento por separação magnética de forma a obter um coproduto com menor presença de S e maior concentração de Fe e assim permitir sua maior reutilização na Sinterização. O projeto se desenvolveu em etapas de amostragem, caracterização, testes experimentais de laboratório, processamento em escala industrial e, por fim, com a adição do coproduto na Sinterização e compilação de resultados. O trabalho conclui a viabilidade de alteração das configurações de processamento com resultados positivos permitindo incremento de consumo de escórias de dessulfuração na Sinterização com ganhos financeiros e ambientais.
