The Bureau of Mines investigated molten-salt electrorefining as a practical method for reclaiming vanadium from vanadium scrap. An electrolytic process utilizing a KC1-LiC1-VC12 electrolyte at 615° C was developed for producing ductile vanadium with a purity over 99.9 percent. The recovery of the vanadium in the cell feed ranged from 88 to 93 percent with a current efficiency from 83 to 95 percent.

In 2006 McNally International Inc. in a Joint Venture partnership with Aecon Constructors was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers; and YDSS Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue Project. These projects comprise a total of 13 kilometres of 2.74 meter finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS). Both contracts require the use of EPB tunnel boring machines with a precast concrete segmental liner. The following provides an overview the two projects.

In 1984 and 1985, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 87,720-acre South Boise Yuba study area (formerly known as RARE II Wilderness Recommended area I-4553) to evaluate mineral resources. The study area and additions are in Blaine, Camas, and Elmore Counties, 10, about 60 mi east of Boise. Granitic rocks of the Cretaceous age Idaho Batholith occupy the western two-thirds of the study area. A Tertiary age granitic complex has intruded, and broken into small blocks, Paleozoic age sedimentary rocks in the eastern third of the study area. Tertiary Challis Volcanics overlie both of these rock types. Principal mineralized structures are gold-and silver-bearing quartz veins and shear zones trending northwest to easterly in the Cretaceous granitic rocks. Copper, lead, and zinc are accessory metals in many mineralized structures.

Rockburst prediction is crucial in deep hard rock mines and tunnels to make safer working conditions. Due to the complex interaction of many factors involved in rockburst prediction, such as multi-variable and multi-interference factors, three hybrid support vector machine (SVM) models optimized by particle swarm optimization (PSO), Harris hawk optimization (HHO), and moth flame optimization (MFO) are proposed to predict rockburst hazard level (RHL). The RHL is determined according to four kinds of microseismic characteristic parameters including angular frequency ratio, total energy, apparent stress, and convexity radius. Then, six types of microseismic characteristic parameters are taken as input variables in 343 sets of data, including angular frequency ratio and total energy, etc.. And the RHL is taken as the output target of rockburst prediction. The classification performance of PSO-SVM, HHO-SVM, and MFO-SVM hybrid models is evaluated by accuracy (ACC), precision (PRE), and kappa coefficient. Findings reveal that the MFO-SVM model performs best in terms of accuracy, with ACC, PRE, and kappa coefficients reaching 0.9559, 0.9063, and 0.9094 respectively, while PSO-SVM and HHO-SVM have similar performances. However, the PSO-SVM, HHO-SVM, and MFO-SVM all perform better than the unoptimized SVM model. This confirms that the three optimization algorithms significantly enhance the rockburst prediction capacity of the SVM model to help mine practitioners apply machine learning methods to rockburst prediction problems appropriately.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses collector residuals, metal concentrations in solution, and other parameters.Collectors used in the plants studied were various xanthates, Z-200, and Aerofloats. Xanthate residuals varied in different ways in most plants. However the general trend was for residuals to be at the O· 5-2 p.p.m. level in lead flotation and O· 5 p.p.m. or less in zinc flotation.Aerofloat residuals were also variable but in the plant concerned were at a much higher level (8-10 p.p.m.) than xanthate residuals. Z-200 residuals were in the 10-20 p.p.m. range and it was found that the Z-200 added to zinc flotation was reporting in dam return water and entering lead flotation.Copper concentrations in solution were negligibly low in those plants where cyanide was not used. When cyanide was used, copper was at the 5-20 p.p.m. level and appeared to be present as Cu(CN)-2. However the hiocyanatepresent may be important. Xanthate was also present in these solutions.Zinc concentrations ranged from 0·1 to 800 p.p.m. in different plants. The general trend was for the zinc level to be highest in the grinding circuit and to drop during flotation. However there was always an increase in zinc concentration when copper sulphate was added, even tho.ugh this incre.ase was not permanent, and the increase was greater with higher copper sulphate additions.The manganese concentration also increased appreciably during copper-activation of marmatite. In some plants lead concentrations increased from 0·1 to 1 p.p.m. during activation of marmatite.Calcium concentrations (20-1200 p.p.m.) and magnesium concentrations (10-600 p.p.m.) tended to be fairly stable in each circuit.

Este trabalho propõe o controle e monitoramento da corrosão em escapamentos de automóveis pela modelagem e mapeamento termo-fluidodinâmico do escapamento utilizando o programa computacional de análise de volumes finitos ANSYS. A corrosão no escapamento do automóvel é produzida e catalisada pelos gases de combustão do motor que fluem aquecidos pelo escapamento. Ao se propor a utilização de uma rede de sensores ópticos nas regiões mapeadas pelo modelo obtido fluido dinâmico do escapamento do automóvel, tem-se uma ferramenta em tempo real para a visualização das regiões de maior gradiente térmico e mais suscetíveis à corrosão pelos gases de combustão no escapamento. A utilização do mapa termo fluidodinâmico do escapamento pelo programa ANSYS possibilita, assim, um maior controle das condições de corrosão no escapamento de um automóvel e na escolha de materiais mais adequados para a sua produção e funcionamento.

Rhenium occurs in very small quantities (12).4 In order for the Federal Bureau of Mines to conduct an investigation of rhenium sources and methods of extraction, it was necessary to devise improved techniques for detecting and measuring minute quantities of the metal. A modification of the procedure of Malouf and White (46) was developed which can be used to detect rhenium in concentrations as small as 0.1 part per million and can be used to measure quantities of 1.0 part per million. It can be used for the analysis of siliceous and calcareous ores, of molybdenite concentrates, of fumes, of flue dusts, and of other metallurgical products. Development of the method involved devising an amine extraction procedure for separating rhenium from all interfering elements except tungsten and a selective distillation procedure for separating rhenium from tungsten. Adoption of these separation procedures permits use of large samples and precise determination of rhenium by colorimetric analysis of the thiocyanate complex of rhenium by means of a spectrophotometer.

El Proyecto Cachorro está ubicado a 150 Km al NE de la Ciudad de Antofagasta, en la Cordillera de la Costa de la Segunda Región de Chile, donde se encuentran depósitos de cobre tipo estratoligados, IOCG, y pórfidos (Mantos Blancos, 500 Mton @ 1,0% Cu; Antucoya, 1.200 Mton @ 0,3% Cu) (Fig. 1). El descubrimiento es el resultado de campañas de exploración greenfield en áreas cubiertas efectuadas desde 2013 por AMSA en el norte de Chile. El depósito se aloja en rocas estratificadas sedimentarias y volcánicas del Paleozoico superior al Jurásico inferior e intrusivos y brechas hidrotermales del Jurásico inferior que se relacionan temporalmente con la mineralización.

The seams of black coal occurring in Victoria are so disturbed by faulting, wash-outs, thinning, etc., that it is necessary, for the prevention of costly errors in development, that close boring be undertaken so that the correct positions of the shafts, tunnels, main and auxiliary roadways can be set out in order that the area can be economically worked. The State Coal Mine has two boring plants continuously at work, which have given good service for the last twenty-five years.The information supplied herein is merely our experience in boring at the State Coal Mine over an extended period. The type of plant in use is that known as the Victoria Drilling Plant, equipped with an 11 h.p. portable oil engine, using power kerosene as fuel. It was purchased in 1914, complete with mechanism for cable drilling, capable of boring to a depth of 1500 ft. with a guarantee of 1000 ft., with Calyx cutters, boring rods and all necessary equipment for the sum of £1473. The chief mechanical features of the plant are as follows:-The derrick is in the shape of a tripod (see Fig. 1), two of the legs being of steel channel built together to form a frame which, when lowered on to two sets of road wheels, forms a carriage for the transport of a portion of the boring equipment. The third leg is made of oregon in the form of a double bow, with bolts and distance pieces between the wooden sides. The top of this is hinged on to the steel frame, and the bottom is fitted into a cast iron block, having two small wheels to facilitate erection. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo contribuir para a preservação refratária de baterias de coque, apresentando uma metodologia de planejamento e controle. A condição dos refratários de baterias de coque é crucial para sua produtividade e para o cumprimento de diretrizes ambientais. São desafios (i) a identificação precoce de danos e previsão de seu efeito no desgaste global da bateria, para hierarquia de reparos; (ii) a seleção da técnica apropriada a cada reparo. No presente trabalho, os autores compilam o estudo da progressão de danos sob diferentes tipos de reparo ao longo de mais de 30 anos em baterias heat-recovery e convencionais, de diversos modelos construtivos, e o combinam a tecnologias de inspeção para consolidar uma metodologia de gestão da preservação refratária. A metodologia foi aplicada em baterias localizadas no Brasil, avaliando a condição de mais de 400 fornos em 90 dias. Para a bateria mais crítica, foi identificado um potencial de prorrogação de vida útil em torno de 10 anos.

One of the main objectives of this study was to evaluate a fine-coal cleaning circuit using an enhanced gravity separator specifically for a high sulfur coal application. The evaluation not only included testing of individual unit operations used for fine-coal classification, cleaning and dewatering, but also included testing of the complete circuit simultaneously. At a scale of nearly 2 t/h, two alternative circuits were evaluated to clean a minus 0.6-mm coal stream utilizing a 150-mm-diameter classifying cyclone, a linear screen having a projected surface area of 0.5 m2, an enhanced gravity separator having a bowl diameter of 250 mm and a screen-bowl centrifuge having a bowl diameter of 500 mm. The cleaning and dewatering components of both circuits were the same; however, one circuit used a classifying cyclone whereas the other used a linear screen as the classification device. An industrial size coal spiral was used to clean the 2- x 0.6-mm coal size fraction for each circuit to estimate the performance of a complete fine-coal circuit cleaning a minus 2-mm particle size coal stream. The ?linear screen + enhanced gravity separator + screen-bowl circuit? provided superior sulfur and ash-cleaning performance to the alternative circuit that used a classifying cyclone in place of the linear screen. Based on these test data, it was estimated that the use of the recommended circuit to treat 50 t/h of minus 2-mm size coal having feed ash and sulfur contents of 33.9% and 3.28%, respectively, may produce nearly 28.3 t/h of clean coal with product ash and sulfur contents of 9.15% and 1.61%, respectively.

Neste trabalho, as diferentes microestruturas, as propriedades mecânicas e a soldabilidade do ferro fundido submetido aos processos de soldagem SMAW, com a utilização de eletrodos de Fe-Ni, e GMAW mecanizado, com a aplicação de arame de Fe-Ni e proteção de Ar-25%CO2, foram investigadas e comparadas. Dentro deste contexto, após a realização de testes de soldagem, com e sem a aplicação de pré-aquecimento, utilizando diferentes parâmetros de soldagem, os cordões de solda foram avaliados por meio de microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura, assim como pela análise dos perfis de micro-dureza e da composição química do arame e do material depositado. Foi possível avaliar a influência da aplicação de diferentes parâmetros elétricos de soldagem, a utilização ou não de pré-aquecimento nas microestruturas geradas nas zonas fundidas, parcialmente fundidas e termicamente afetadas dos cordões obtidos, assim como as propriedades mecânicas.

The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015. A qualidade de fabricação de tubos de aço sem costura está relacionada ao processo de tratamento térmico. O controle do comportamento dos fornos industriais de tratamento térmico é de grande importância de modo a garantir a qualidade do produto. É necessário conhecer os parâmetros de operação dos fornos, assim como suas influências nas variáveis de processo. Este estudo avaliou as extensões do efeito do tipo de alinhamento dos tubos no interior do forno nas temperaturas dos canais de fumaça, temperatura do forno, temperatura do tubo, pressão interna do forno, demanda dos queimadores e consumo de gás natural. Diferentes alinhamentos podem impactar no escoamento da massa de gás queimado dentro do forno e consequentemente ter um efeito nas variáveis de processo avaliadas. Para determinar o tipo de alinhamento mais adequado do ponto de vista da qualidade do material final e da melhor eficiência energética, testes foram realizados durante uma corrida em um forno de austenização, na qual se alternou entre os diferentes tipos de alinhamento, medindo-se as variáveis de processo estudadas. Os resultados foram analisados utilizando-se técnicas estatísticas, como ANOVA. Ao final observou-se que certos parâmetros são impactados pelo tipo de alinhamento do tubo, sobretudo a temperatura de fumos e pressão interna no forno. As variações foram relativamente pequenas, principalmente pelo fato da principal variável controladora do processo, a temperatura do forno, possuir uma dinâmica de resposta lenta.

New Technologies, New Challenges and New Opportunities For quite some time now, numerous explosive manufacturers have spent untold man-hours and millions of dollars trying to develop a blast initiation technology that would “once and for all” provide users with what was once believed to be only a theoretical possibility...nominal timing. Zero “cap scatter” (the amount of variation of delay timing from the targeted nominal) has been the industry’s goal ever since delays were first introduced into the marketplace. Just as adding delay time between blast-holes improved blast performance since their introduction, having the wrong delay or a poorly timed blast has proven to be very inefficient and in many cases hazardous. The question of how precise a blast initiation system needs to be still remains unanswered, but electronic detonator systems being used today indicate that significant improvements can be achieved over conventional pyrotechnic detonators. These systems can typically provide single digit millisecond ranges of variability, if not sub-millisecond in some cases.

"IntroductionSULPHUR is a constituent of many industrial products. It is part •of almost anything we eat, wear, or use. In fact, sulphur is so important that there has been an increasing tendency in recent years to measure industrial growth in terms of sulphur consumption.The uncertainty of obtaining adequate supplies •of elemental sulphur from the Frasch-mined domes. of Texas and Louisiana in the United States led all countries in 1950 to seek alternative sources of supply of this necessary element.Canadian industry has been supplied, for many years, with most of its sulphur requirements by United States Frasch-mined sulphur. World demand for this sulphur has necessitated the imposition of controls on its distribution, as production has not kept pace with demand. Until the third quarter of 1950, Canadian manufacturers of pulp and paper, heavy chemicals, explosives, and textiles •experienced little difficulty in obtaining their needs of elemental sulphur from the United States. However, at that time, low producers' stocks and declining reserves threatened to reduce shipments from producers, with the prospect of a continuing shortage for some time. These conditions, together with higher prices, stimulated the search for alternative sources of supply in Canada."

Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter to Japan, accounting for about 30 M tons annually. They produced about 150 M tons in 2005, over 99% of which being from open-cut mines [1]. However, the conditions of surface mining are becoming worse each year: the stripping ratio is increasing, approaching the economic ratio and the infrastructure for coal transportation from inland mining areas is insufficient for such intense mining operations. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. At present, there are only five small underground mines, three of which are old and the other two have only recently begun mining operations [2]. However, severe ground control problems have been occurring regularly, roof falls in particular. At a new mine developed from the highwall, a large bolted roof fall occurred at the heading face, killing two miners. Unfortunately, mining engineers and/or miners in this mine do not have a lot of experiences, expertise and know-how concerning the operations of underground coal mines. Since 2001, Japan has started a ?five-year plan for coal technology transfer? to fill Japan?s moral obligation as the largest coal importer in the world. The research team for this accident was organized and the on-site investigation was conducted in order to find the cause of this accident and make the solution. This paper describes the roof fall accident at the mine, discusses its causes and mechanism and suggests the introduction of some techniques for improving the current support system considering the strata and stress conditions by means of field observation and finite element modeling.
