This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

The development of a process for upgrading offgrade titanium metal by electrorefining in molten salt led to an investigation of the electrotransfer characteristics of selected metals when alloyed with the titanium to be refined. Previous tests on seven binary titanium alloys showed that the degree of transfer of the alloying constituent depends on the constituent and on the operating procedurese.5 This report describes tests on electrorefining ternary mixtures of titanium with selected metallic elements. Ten alloys were prepared from high purity titanium and 2-1/2 percent of each of the metal pairs selected from the same elements used in the binary study; manganese, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, tin, molybdenum, aluminum. Operating variables were similar to those investigated in the binary alloy study that gave minimum alloy metal transfer. The data presented indicate the transfer characteristics of the various metals and combinations tested relative to each other.

The Canadian Clean Power Coalition (CCPC) was created in 2001 to protect and enhance Canada’s vast coal and other carbon-based resource wealth, and to ensure that environmental public policy decisions recognize that these resources are a Canadian asset, not an environmental liability. To achieve its mandate, CCPC has undertaken to demonstrate technologies for use in new coal-fired power plants to control air emissions including carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxides (SOx), mercury (Hg), and particulates (PM). The first phase of the demonstration project assessed three existing technologies for coal-fired power plants that reduce all emissions, including CO2, to levels equivalent to or below that of gas-fired power plants. The technologies considered in this phase included integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), ‘oxyfuel’ combustion, and amine scrubbing of pulverized coal. These technologies were evaluated with three coal types: Eastern bituminous, western sub-bituminous, and lignite coals. This paper presents the studies, conclusions concerning the capital and operating costs of these technologies, the cost of electricity produced (with CO2 removed), and the cost per tonne of CO2 avoided. It also discusses the potential for using captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, and possible technology enhancements for improving the competitiveness of gasification of low-rank western Canadian coals. The second ongoing phase of CCPC’s work includes the design and construction of a commercial-scale plant to demonstrate the feasibility of integrated gas combined cycle (IGCC) and/or polygeneration technologies and the potential for using the CO2 generated for enhanced recovery of conventional oil.

In several of the States of Australia, mining on private property has been seriously hampered by the fact that large areas of land have been alienated from the Crown before the discovery of gold or other minerals. In Western Australia this difficultyhas only occurred to a small extent, and has largely been overcome by an act entituled "An Act to Permit Mining on Private Property, No. XXIX., 'October, 28th, 1898." Under this act, the holder of a miner's right can apply for a gold mining lease on private land; such applicant may treat privately with the owner of such land as to the amount of compensation to be paid for surface ,damage, or the case may be brought before the Warden who will assess the damages. Private land used as a garden, orchard, or vineyard is exempt from lease, unless the applicant has authority from the owner, or such lease is limited to a greater depth than 100 feet from the lowest part of the surface.No lease shall be granted of any mines under any private land in any municipality unless either the applicant has authority from the owner, or such lease is limited to a greater depth than two hundred feet from the lowest part of the surface.The same regulation applies to leases of private land on which any hospital, asylum, or public building is situated or under or within one hundred and fifty yards laterally of any...

In surface mining operations, truck haulage is the largest item in the operating costs, constituting 50 to 60% of the total. In order to reduce this cost, it is necessary to allocate and dispatch the trucks efficiently. This paper describes shovel and truck operation models and optimization approaches for the allocation and dispatching of trucks under various operating conditions. Closed queuing network theory is employed for the allocation of trucks and linear programming for the purpose of truck dispatching to shovels. A case study was applied for the Orhaneli Open Pit Coal Mine in Turkey. This approach would provide the capability of estimating system performance measures (mine throughput, mean number of trucks, mean waiting time, etc.) for planning purposes when the truck fleet is composed of identical trucks. A computational study is presented to show how choosing the optimum number of trucks and optimum dispatching policy affect the cost of moving material in a truck-shovel system. As inclusões exercem um papel fundamental na lingotabilidade dos aços produzidos em lingotamento contínuo. É conhecido na literatura o efeito da composição das inclusões na formação de obstruções em válvulas submersas. Contudo, um problema também recorrente no ambiente industrial é o desgaste dos tampões e válvulas submersas do distribuidor, que impede o controle de fluxo de aço para os moldes. O presente trabalho visa avaliar a influência da composição das inclusões na taxa de desgaste de tampão. Foram avaliadas inclusões de aços acalmados ao Si-Mn em corridas que apresentaram diferentes valores de desgaste de tampão. A partir dos resultados obtidos foi possível concluir que a taxa de desgaste de tampão é consideravelmente dependente do teor de MnO das inclusões e que um maior teor de Al2O3 pode contribuir também para reduzir o desgaste.

The new mining method of multiple strata blasting, called StratablastTM, is described in a separate paper presented at this conference. The current paper presents three case studies where the technique was implemented in three different configurations in large-scale blasts in Australia. The first two blasts were in the Hunter Valley of NSW while the third was at Ensham Mine in Central Queensland. All blasts comprised multiple layers that were blasted in a single drill and blast cycle, with unique designs applied to each layer to achieve different blast outcomes from the various layers.

O rompimento de pele (breakout) é considerado uma das anomalias mais danosas ao processo de lingotamento contínuo de placas de aço. Esta ocorrência, além dos riscos de segurança durante a limpeza do aço derramado, resulta em pesadas perdas de produção e danos aos equipamentos. Estima-se que o custo potencial de um rompimento de média intensidade possa atingir a cifra de US$270.000,00, considerando a perda potencial de produção, o custo de reprocessamento do material e a recomposição dos equipamentos como segmentos, moldes, etc. Portanto, tão importante quanto evitar o breakout é também reduzir as suas consequências. Dentro deste contexto visando mitigar os danos de um rompimento quando o vazamento não é imediatamente reconhecido, desenvolveu-se um sistema pneumático de detecção de vazamento na saída do molde, envolvendo os edge e foot rolls. Basicamente, o sistema é um circuito fechado constituído de tubos de pequeno diametro com gás nitrogenio pressurizado. Se ocorrer um vazamento de aço, este funde o tubo (provocando perda de pressão ou excesso de vazão) ativando o sistema de alarme de indicação de vazamento, que fecha automaticamente a válvula gaveta do distribuidor para o veio e coloca a placa em extração. Atualmente todos os moldes da ArcelorMittal Tubarão possuem este sistema visando mitigar as consequencias de um vazamento.

This report is principally concerned with the engineering and economic feasibility of area surface coal mining systems other than draglines. This analysis evaluates shovel/ trucks, shovel/crusher/conveyors, and shovel/rail excavation and haulage systems for an assortment of geologic environments and production rates in the Powder River Basin (PRB) Shovel/trucks, front-end loaders/ trucks, and shovel/crusher/conveyors were studied in a multi-seam, dipping geologic area of the Four Corners Region. The Texas lignite engineering and economic research involved bucket-wheel excavators (BWE), BWE/backhoes, and scraper/backhoe combinations for overburden and coal excavation. The PRE truck/shovel study utilized the most recent computer simulation available in both the design and cost analyses. Detailed engineering analysis, followed by in-depth operating costs (operating and depreciation) result in a complete evaluation of each mining system. Cost comparisons of the different mining systems under similar geologic and production constraints are presented in the report to illustrate the estimated capital investment and production costs per ton of coal and bank cubic yard of overburden.

This report presents evidence indicating that when rock is stress-relieved during the course of mining or in drilling a core, it may be altered or damaged to the extent that the physical properties of the relieved specimen are not the same as those of the in situ rock. Furthermore, this type of damage may result from stress change other than that accompanying stress relief, such as the application of a relatively large compressive stress. In some instances the damage is microscopic, manifesting itself as incipient cracks or the failure of individual crystal bonds. However, if the sample is taken from a high-stress area, macroscopic damage may occur.

Esse trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar o projeto de melhoria da automação das pontes rolantes (PRs) e arranjo do pátio de bobinas BQ1, onde estão localizadas as linhas de acabamento (LAs)(Encruamento e Corte) como parte do projeto maior de aumento de produtividade destas plantas. Percebeu-se que a atuação na logística interna do pátio e na interface com as PRs poderia obter bons resultados nas movimentações de bobinas. O pátio tem áreas de recebimento e despacho de bobinas e quatro PRs e, portanto, grande número de movimentos possíveis, o grande desafio foi capturar estas informações e desenhar uma solução que atendesse as expectativas. Desta forma se buscou realizar um levantamento de dados minucioso para abrangendo o sistema existente, as características físicas e o modo operacional para definição de regras de movimentação otimizadas. As ações implementadas foram a revisão completa do arranjo do pátio e redefinição de regras de movimentação, e a implantação de terminal embarcado nas PRs para instruir as movimentações além de fornecer informações e dar autonomia para a tomada de algumas decisões controladas.

WHEN finely divided ferrous sulphide, FeS, is roasted at a moderate, carefully regulated temperature, the iron and sulphur are oxidized, the first products being probably ferrous oxide and sulphurous acid. In the presence of oxygen of the air the ferrous oxide soon becomes ferric oxide and in the presence of oxygen and the ferric oxide the sulphurous acid oxidizes to sulphuric acid. These facts are well known, having been established by Plattner many years ago. As a further reaction, some of the sulphuric acid parts with a portion of its oxygen to oxidize more ferrous oxide to ferric oxide, and a portion of it escapes uncombined or else unites with the iron oxides to form sulphates. Ferrous sulphate is usually soon oxidized to ferric sulphate and if the heat becomes sufficient this is then decomposed into sulphuric acid and ferric oxide. As a result of these reactions a mass of more or less pure ferric oxide is formed which is generally made porous by the escaping gases and, if rabbled properly, practically all the sulphur is expelled. If ferric sulphide or ordinary pyrites, FeS2, is roasted, a portion of the sulphur sublimes and usually burns to form sulphurous or sulphuric acid, although at times and under favorable conditions some of the sulphur is driven off uncombined and can be collected as such. Under ordinary methods of roasting, however, only a small portion escapes combustion. By the combustion of the sulphur an increase of heat is de¬veloped and, as a consequence, the reactions mentioned take place more rapidly and actively-more sulphuric acid is formed and the oxidation is more complete-nearly all the iron being left as ferric oxide with practically no sulphate or ferrous oxide. A radiação solar apresenta uma enorme variedade de aplicações de engenharia, dentre elas, a conversão em energia térmica em concentradores solares. Os tubos absorvedores dos concentradores solares podem ser recobertos por cromo negro, com o objetivo de otimizar a absorção energética e a durabilidade. Esse trabalho é parte de um estudo complexo sobre esse tipo de recobrimento. Foram desenvolvidos filmes de cromo negro por eletrodeposição sobre aço inoxidável AISI 304 e tratados termicamente a 600°C por 2 horas. Os filmes foram caracterizados antes e depois do tratamento térmico, utilizando-se microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (EDS) e difração de raios X a baixo ângulo de incidência (GAXRD). Além do cromo, observou-se deposição de cobalto e elementos residuais do banho eletrolítico. O estudo da estrutura cristalina mostrou formação de óxidos após tratamento térmico. Microestruturalmente, foram observados filmes com estrutura lamelar ou nodular. O estudo permitiu sugerir modificações do banho eletrolítico, do substrato e métodos adicionais de caracterização.

O objetivo deste trabalho é utilizar o vasto banco de dados de informações de processo armazenadas pelo InfoPlus.21, que é um exemplo de sistema PIMS - Plant Information Managment System, para implementar um sensor virtual a partir de um modelo neural visando obter a tendência de resposta da variável consumo específico de uma caldeira. Propõe-se também, extrair diagnósticos do processo através do emprego da Lógica Fuzzy. As etapas de treinamento da rede neural e o desenvolvimento do diagnóstico envolveram simulações no software Matlab. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram-se bastante satisfatórios. Destaca-se a tendência de resposta do sensor virtual que apontou 97% de confiabilidade. Por fim entende-se que as propostas deste trabalho foram alcançadas, principalmente pela implementação inovadora do sensor virtual no InfoPlus.21 por meio da ferramenta SQLPlus, a qual possibilitará novas aplicações no meio industrial.

The first section of this U.S. Bureau of Mines report includes a discussion of the navigational tasks performed by operators of mobile mining equipment, with the focus on the navigational information and guidance techniques required by continuous mining machine operators. Some previous research and attempts in remote and autonomous navigation of continuous mining machines are mentioned. Issues of research in autonomous navigation of various other mobile robots are presented, with attention focused on their applicability to a continuous mining machine navigating in the mining environment. Conclusions are stated on methods of automating the navigational tasks of a continuous mining machine, and a decision to concentrate initial attempts on the tasks of autonomous face navigation is defended. The second section of this report includes a presentation of the Bureau's proposed solution for autonomous face navigation of a continuous mining machine, which includes the employment of a mobile roof support as a reference for guidance in the face area, and a navigational guidance system for the continuous mining machine.

The research objective was to determine the effect of vanadium alloy additions on the oxidation behavior of cobalt-nickel Alloys. Eighteen alloys were reacted with 0 2 at 0.5 arm and 1,351°, 1,389°, and 1,429° K. The alloy compositions consisted of Co-Ni master alloys (0, 22, 50, 70, 91, and 100 wt pct Ni) with V additions of 0, 0.9, and 2.7 wt pct. Large early deviations from, or changes in, the parabolic rate constant were encountered, but the reaction rate in most cases declined approximately in accordance with the parabolic rate law. Relatively, the vanadium degraded the oxidation resistance most at the highest nickel contents. In some cases, melting of the oxide was inferred from microscopic evidence and X-ray diffraction measurements disclosed the presence of low-melting vanadates.

Data are presented for oil produced in 1971 from fields in 26 States that accounted for about 76 percent of total U.S. oil production; the foreign data cover fields in 24 foreign countries that accounted for about 64 percent of the total oil produced from these countries in 1971. Most of the data are presented in tabular form.
