The scope of this project was to research, develop and eventually produce a personal occupational hygiene and safety exposure monitor system to assist in recording and analysing various stress factors that could affect the health, wellness and safety of employees, i.e. that could result in injury or ill health of workers, create stress build-up within individual workers that could negatively affect worker alertness and safety, and, may even result in permanent disability or death. Utilized systems at the time were all reactive, whereas the DOHEMS (Proactive Digital Occupational Hygiene and Safety Exposure Monitoring) System enabled the measurement of exposure (and associated risk) in a proactive manner via real-time exposure and digitized recordings. The idea of the development was to create a unit that is so cost effective, small and light that every worker can use a system on a daily basis. The development will eventually replace current, bulky and expensive monitoring equipment. The device must be a portable battery operated device and monitor the immediate working environment by periodic sampling for vibration, noise, toxic gasses (NO/NOX/CO/VOC, etc.), body temperature and heart rate. The samples must be time and date stamped, utilizing a real-time clock (RTC) synchronized with the closest regional secondary time source and related to synchronized real-time video captured samples. These samples are then recorded onto a rugged non volatile storage device with the capacity to store a vast number of samples covering the entire working shift of eight (8) hours plus. The system has been fitted with a clear visual local alarm indication system, indicating any excessive exposures or stresses, for the worker?s supervisor to respond to. This system allows for a pro-active approach. The system is also a wireless system (to the external environment) so as to not affect the mobility of an employee and flameproof to allow for use in explosive environments. PHYSICAL AND CLIMATIC DIVISIONS. PERU is divided into three regions-the coast, the sierra, or high mountainous region, and the a montana," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.-The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (garua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic or Humboldt ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. Near the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as produce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.-The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. To the north of Lake Titicaca these cordilleras unite in the knot of Vilcanota, south of Cuzco. Dynamic load testing is employed with ever increasing frequency to estimate the strength and elastic settlement behavior of piles of all types. For dynamic loading ram masses up to 20 Mg have been used and pile resistance forces up to 30 MN have been activated. Strains and accelerations induced by the impact are measured near the pile top and a load-set curve is computed by the so-called CAPWAP method. This paper briefly describes both the necessary equipment and other details of the dynamic tests and the available analytical tools for data interpretation. Furthermore the need for further research and the current status of standardization will be discussed. This paper also presents the results from several static and dynamic correlation tests on cast-in-situ piles of up to 2 m diameter and 64 m length. The results demonstrate the economical and technical feasibility of this test method.

Phase III Prediction of the Psychological and Organizational Impacts of Automated Mining, The investigation determines that the automation of a continuous mining section will improve the health and safety of the miner, increase productivity and decrease mining costs, result in a more attractive and desirable working environment, and result in a greater rate of return on capital investment.

This report covers a technical and economic investigation of old electrical power systems, equipment and practices being used in the metal/non-metal raining industry. The principal sources of information were the MSHA District offices, visits to representa¬tive mines and mills, equipment manufacturers and the literature. A list of 85 mines and mills, submitted by the MSHA Districts as candidates for this study, is given and their characteristics are analysed. The electrical power systems and practices at the 10 mines and 9 mills which were visited are described. The principal areas which do not conform to standard electrical practices are discussed with emphasis on the safety aspects of these practices. The costs to update electrical power systems and practices in metal/non-metal mines and mills are given. The principal findings of the study are summarized and recommendations are submitted.

The Bureau of Mines studied airblast from surface mining to assess its damage and annoyance potential, and to determine safe levels and appropriate measurement techniques. Research results obtained from direct measurements of airblast-produced structure responses, damage, and analysis of instrument characteristics were combined with studies of sonic booms and human response to transient overpressures. Safe levels of airblast were found to be 134 dBL (0.1 Hz), 133 dBL (2 Hz), 129 dBL (6 Hz), and 105 dB C-slow. These four air-blast levels and measurement methods are equivalent in terms of structure response, and anyone could be used as a safe-level criterion. Of the four methods, only the 0.1-Hz high-pass linear method accurately measures the total airblast energy present; however, the other three were found to adequately quantify the structure response and also represent techniques that are readily available to industry. Where a single airblast measuring system must he used, the 2-Hz linear peak response is the best overall compromise. The human response and annoyance problem from airblast is probably caused primarily by wall rattling and the resulting secondary noises. Although these will not entirely be precluded by the recommended levels, they are low enough to preclude damage to residential structures and any possible human injury over the long term.

The vibratory characteristics of full-scale sheet piles, vibratory driven into the ground, have so far not been described systematically in detail. This paper concerns the preliminary results of a series of full-scale field tests where both the driveability and induced ground vibrations have been continuously monitored. Furthermore, the results of measured ground vibration levels have been measured at two different sites characterised as having hard and easy driving conditions. In the light of the presented results, the paper briefly discusses how the complexity of a driveability and vibration prediction can be subdivided into three parts, namely, vibrator-, sheet pile-, and soil-related parameters, all of which significantly affect both the driveability and induced ground vibrations.

No atual cenário acirrado de competitividade, umas das linhas para redução do custo da mistura de carvões é o desenvolvimento de matérias-primas alternativas nacionais que minimizem o custo do coque e mitiguem a emissão de CO2. O presente trabalho avaliou a utilização de resíduos de shredder (fluff) como aditivo nas misturas para a produção de coque metalúrgico. A utilização de fluff na mistura de carvões minerais sugere uma rota de destinação ecologicamente correta, a fim de mitigar o impacto causado pelo acúmulo desse resíduo no meio-ambiente, além de uma alternativa para redução de custos de produção do coque metalúrgico. Foram realizados enfornamentos, em escala piloto, com adição de fluff, com objetivo de avaliar o impacto sobre a qualidade do coque, especialmente sobre a Resistência após Reação com CO2 (CSR) e a Resistência Mecânica a Frio (DI150-15). Os resultados mostraram a viabilidade técnica da adição de até 1% em massa do material, mantendo a qualidade metalúrgica do coque produzido.

Virtual Reality (VR) simulations are excellent tools for training, education, simulation of abnormal and dangerous conditions in mines and solving complex problems. Although the concept of VR has been around for nearly half a century, it has taken recent advances in hardware and software to bring this technology to within the budgetary reach of ordinary users and researchers. VR is now successfully being used in the minerals industry for: data visualization, accident reconstructions, simulation applications, risk analysis, hazard awareness and training. The Institute of Sustainable Minerals Industry, Advanced Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality Research Group (SMI-VR) at the University of Queensland, established in late 2000, has been involved in developing VR applications for the minerals industry in conjunction with various research centres. This paper illustrates the benefits of using advanced computer graphics and VR techniques in the minerals industry with some examples of applications developed.

Tratamentos térmicos são de grande importância para o desenvolvimento dos materiais, pois alteram as suas propriedades ou conferem-lhes características determinadas. Neste trabalho, foram realizados dois tratamentos térmicos diferentes, recozimento pleno e normalização, em um aço utilizado como eixo de sustentação de aerogerador a fim de verificar as alterações nas microestruturas e propriedades mecânicas através de microscopia ótica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e ensaio de microdureza Vickers. Além disso, foi realizada a identificação do material por meio de cálculo de composição de carbono utilizando o programa Image J com imagens obtidas por microscopia ótica. Logo, determinou-se que o aço tinha um teor de 0,55% de carbono. Após o estudo comparativo de dureza, verificou-se uma maior dureza da amostra normalizada e uma menor para a amostra recozida em comparação com a amostra recebida (sem tratamento). Logo, alcançaram-se os objetivos esperados ao fim do trabalho, pois todas as etapas foram realizadas com êxito obtendo,dessa forma, uma análise de resultados precisa.

Although these earths were actually weathered basalts, the term is now applied to weathering profiles developed upon a wide range of bedrocks. Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I come to you tonight distinctly as a physicist, not as a geologist or a mining man. My experience in applied geophysics has been short, and I do not doubt that many of you have a much larger acquaintance: with the subject than I have. A little over a year ago, the firm of Alderson, MacKay & Armstrong decided to investigate the possibility of developing a new method of electrical prospecting suitable to our northern Quebec and northern Ontario conditions, and asked me to take up the work. A preliminary survey of existing literature convinced me that the field of induction methods was most promising. I wish to give you some account of the work carried on last summer in the Rouyn district in this connection with the very able assistance of Mr. H. G. I. Watson. Geophysical methods of prospecting can be divided generally into four classes: magnetic, electrical, gravitational, and seismic. Each class depends on the existence of a definite property in which the valuable mineral to be discovered differs materially from the surrounding rocks. In the four classes, the property will be, respectively, magnetic permeability, electrical conductivity, density, and elasticity. By far the largest differences occur in the case of electrical conductivity, where it is not rare to find ratios of the order of several millions, or even billions, between ores, sulphide ores especially, and the surrounding rock. Hence the sensitiveness and delicacy of electrical methods. Of these four classes, only two, the electrical and the magnetic methods, have been put to extensive practical use in the discovery of metallic ores. The other two classes are important mainly in connection with oil detection.

The stoping of platinum orebodies in the Bushveld has in the past been accomplished by using in-stope pillars to ensure stability of the workings. In the future, the use of continuous mining machines to mine the platinum orebodies is probable. It is not envisaged that such machines will cut in-stope pillars. This paper describes the alternative support systems that will replace the pillars and the stope geometries that will be required for this type of mining. The paper describes how the support resistance provided by in-stope pillars in current mining was determined and then evaluates support systems that can substitute for these pillars. Conceptual layouts based on existing breast mining layouts are presented. The layouts consist of panels of up to 100 m face length between rigid strike stabilizing pillars. A number of design charts are then proposed that allow for the design of appropriate support systems.

A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves numerical modelling that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through a rock mass. A DFN is a 3D realisation of the ‘smaller scale’, non-deterministic defects; it is not an attempt to model larger, deterministic structures that should be identified as part of an engineering geology model. The approach utilises structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models that provides a tool for visualisation and analysis of a rock mass and indicates the potential large-scale slope or tunnel performance and stability.Stochastic fracture modelling for rock mass characterisation has significantly advanced over the past 25 years. With recent improvements to field data collection and computational power, it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses.This paper provides an introduction to the DFN approach, particularly the necessary input parameters and derivation of these from typical structural data sources, such as boreholes or scan line mapping. "The commissioning of the 4th concentrator (C4) at Freeport Indonesia in early 1998 increased total mill throughput from 130k to 230k tonnes per day. The C4 flowsheet consists of a single 38 ft diameter SAG mill, four 24 ft diameter ball mills followed by four banks of 4,500 ft3 WEMCO flotation cells.The design of the C4 rougher flotation circuit was based on the expectation that the copper and gold recoveries achieved with the 4500 ft3 flotation cells would be equivalent to or better than that achieved with the 3,000 ft3 flotation cells in the 3rd concentrator (C3) rougher circuit. This assumption was due to the fact that the C4 flotation feed size would be less than 15% +212 microns compared to the C3 rougher flotation feed size of less than 23% +212 microns. By mid 1998 it had become apparent that the C4 rougher flotation copper and gold recoveries were below those predicted.In order to determine the cause of the lower recoveries, stage by stage rougher flotation surveys were performed in all four concentrators. The results of the surveys showed that the C4 rougher flotation circuit had a lower recovery of +200 micron material than that achieved in the C 1, C2 and C3 concentrators. Through mineralogical analysis, it was determined that a majority of the copper contained in the +200 micron fractions was liberated and recoverable. This paper describes the steps taken to increase coarse particle recovery, overall plant recovery and the results achieved."

Behavioral accidents are a particular type of accident. They are caused by inappropriate individual behaviors and faulty reactions. Catastrophe theory is a means for mathematically modeling the dynamic processes that underlie behavioral accidents. Based on a comprehensive data base of mining accidents, a computerized catastrophe model has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. This model systematically links individual psychological, group behavioral, and mine environmental variables with other accident causing factors. It answers several longstanding questions about why some normally safe behaving persons may spontaneously engage in unsafe acts that have high risks of serious injury. Field tests with the model indicate that it has three important uses: It can be used as an effective training aid for increasing employee safety consciousness; it can be used as a management laboratory for testing decision alternatives and policies; and it can be used to help design the most effective work teams.

A subsidence monitoring program over a longwall panel was established (1) to explore the impacts of dynamic subsidence on the ground surface and structures and (2) to correlate the movements between the structures and their corresponding points on the ground. The program consisted of a transverse line survey and a series of survey points around the structures on the ground surface and their corresponding survey points on the exterior walls of the structures. The vertical displacement of each point can be expressed as: where Si is subsidence at i point; Sif is the final subsidence at i point; F is face location in terms of distance from the i point and SD is seam depth. The development of subsidence can be divided into five stages. Damage to the structures starts at the beginning of the second stage, The maximum damage developed in the middle of the third stage. The relationship of the vertical displacement between ground surface and structures can be expressed as: G = aH + b where G is ground displacement, H is structures displacement, and a and b are constants. The relationship is linear. However, the strain is non-linear and more complicated because of the interaction of the ground surface and structure.

All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

The Australian metallurgical processing industry has shown great innovation and progressiveness over the past ten years. During the same period, exploration activity, particularly by Australian companies, has increased substantially in Indonesia. Following feasibility studies, the decision was made to establish a metallurgical laboratory and design facility in Indonesia. An Indonesian partner was selected, and legal and corporate matters were determined. The laboratory was established but proved far more difficult than a similar undertaking in Australia. Australian and Indonesian staff were recruited and training programs, including training of Indonesian staff in Australia, were implemented. Difficulties of operating in Indonesia included: ò language difficulties ò _ local pace of life ò culture ò communications. Rewards of the decision to establish the means to present the technology to Indonesia have included: ò a contribution to Australia's export of technology. ò an opportunity to expand Normet's client base. ò the opportunity to learn aspects of a foreign culture. ò the means to establish a sound long term investment. This export of technology from the Australian mining industry to Indonesia is an example of the initiatives and capabilities shown by the Australian mining service industry.
