This paper summarizes some preliminary results of the Illinois State Geological Surveys current investigation into surface subsidence resulting from coal mining in Illinois. The purpose of the study is to characterize-the vertical movements that may result from various types of underground coal mining. In general there is relatively little published information about subsidence from room-and-pillar mining as compared with longwall mining. The findings of this study, based on mining operations in a variety of geologic settings, delineate the magnitude, shape, and position of the subsidence profile. Comparisons of case histories of subsidence are based primarily on the extraction ratio and the general geometry of the mine (depth, panel width, and mining height).

INTRODUCTION Prior to 1705, underground mining was limited to mineral deposits located above or a very small distance below the water table. The development of the steamdriven mining pump was motivated by the need to extract minerals from deposits considerably lower than the water table. Today, the majority of mine pumps are driven by electric motors, although some small utility pumps are driven by compressed air. Of the numerous types of pumps that might be applied to mine service, the two types used most frequently underground are the centrifugal and plunger pumps. Each of these types has its proper application. In most instances, plunger pumps are best for handling low water volumes against high heads, while centrifugal pumps effectively handle either low or high water volumes against low heads or high water volumes against high heads. This chapter describes pumps applied to underground mine service, where the mine service consists of mine drainage (removing mine water as it accumulates), mine dewatering (removing water from a flooded mine), and pumping for special applications such as hydraulic mining and hydraulic hoisting. CENTRIFUGAL AND PLUNGER PUMPS Modern mine pumps are classified as either centrifugal (kinetic) or plunger (positive-displacement) pumps. The following paragraphs describe each of these classifications. Centrifugal Pumps Centrifugal pumps may be grouped into various types, depending upon their various features: Number of Stages: In a single-stage pump, the total head is developed by one impeller, while a multi¬stage pump utilizes two or more impellers acting in one casing to develop the total head. Fig. I shows a cutaway view of a single-stage horizontal split-case double -section centrifugal pump. Fig. 2 shows a cutaway view of a six-stage medium-pressure split-case diffuser-type centrifugal pump. Type of Casing: A volute pump has a casing in the form of a spiral or volute. A circular-casing pump has a casing of constant cross section concentric with the impeller. A diffuser pump is equipped with a diffuser that converts velocity head to pressure head. Shaft Position: A horizontal pump normally has the shaft in a horizontal position, while a vertical pump normally has the shaft in a vertical position. Design for economical operation, minimum operating labor and minimum maintenance for labor and supplies are virtually inseparable. Each consideration has a vital bearing on the other. Let us assume that we have the design complete for the most economical operation with a minimum of operating personnel. This means, in addition, that we have the fewest number of operating units consistent with the product requirements for a team or metallurgical coal which we are called on to produce. The number of units will vary greatly, being influenced by design, washability characteristics, tonnage and degree of quality control necessary by reason of producing a product for metallurgical, steam or domestic use. The work of engineers responsible for the design and performance of mine facilities is often challenged by economic and practical constraints in the field. Problems have developed in implementing design criteria dictated by persons or agencies not familiar with the dynamic nature of mine engineering. Regional and site-specific conditions frequently require changes to standard designs, or the use of a completely innovative approach, which is not provided for in the regulations. The implementation of engineering design, therefore, usually requires a hard-sell approach to management and regulatory agencies that allows for a happy-medium to all parties concerned. Flexibility on the part of the regulatory agencies is needed to solve operational and environmental problems with sound engineering. Typical hydrologic issues which will be discussed fall in the following general categories: ? Design criteria for sizing water control structures (i.e., culverts, diversion and sedimentation ponds, ditches, etc.) ? Implementation (construction and operation) difficulties ? Regulatory compliance ? Reclamation planning with hydrologic considerations ? Protection of groundwater resources

There is a plethora of former industrial sites where coal mining operations have left large slurry impoundments. These contain raw washed fines, which have previously been too expensive to process to requisite grades for commercial use. New technology has been developed for fine material processing, namely the Imhoflot pneumatic flotation G-Cell. This froth flotation technique is a highly efficient means of concentrating coal and is particularly appropriate to the nature of materials encountered in tailings ponds. The high volumetric throughput resulting from the vastly reduced residence time in the cell allows for drastically reduced equipment sizes when compared to conventional flotation cells. This means the process, when combined with innovative pre treatment and filtration equipment can be developed as a mobile plant concept. This is seen as a minimum requirement when re-treating and rehabilitating fine coal ponds.

The remote face loading and entry convergence monitoring systems, employed at some of the Cyprus Amax's underground coal mines, have been able to continuously record changes in face shield resistance across and entry convergence ahead of the longwall face at any moment during longwall mining. The instrumental data obtained from these systems plus in-situ observations during the mining operation can help us better understand the mechanism of overburden strata movement above a longwall face and verify the effectiveness of the current face and entry supports. This paper describes the functions of both the face and entry monitoring systems, and discusses our findings and the issues related to successful ground control for longwall mining.

After a century of variable government-supplied housing on their cold, windswept lands, and facing extremely limited natural resources and no timber, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has launched a study into alternative housing approaches for their people. Considering that they have little more than the soil and limited river aggregates under their feet, the Tribe has elected to consider adobe and earthen-wall construction. Earthen construction is no stranger to the Sioux lands. Smaller tribes, including the Mandan, Arikira, and Hidatsa, lived here among the Sioux in earthlodges for centuries. Such earthlodge structures were not unlike the Southwestern jacal style-a framework of upright branches and branches covered with mud-employed by the Anasazi about A.D. 700-900. Indeed, the Sioux people themselves evolved from earlier earthlodge dwellers. Indigenous peoples in New Mexico, Arizona, and neighboring Mexico have used earthen-wall housing for many centuries, reinforcing Sioux observations that this is today an earth-friendly, cost-effective, and practical approach. The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Reservations also recently have conducted studies on earthen- wall construction. This paper describes the search for and evaluation of potential raw-material resources for earthen-wall/adobe construction on the Standing Rock Reservation in North and South Dakota. Significant resources of clay/silt materials (8 million tons in the Striped Cloud clay bed) suitable as adobe binders and sand-and-gravel aggregate (2.5 million tons) that could support earthen/adobe construction have been identified throughout the Fort Yates Flat area on the Reservation. Also addressed is how adobe and rammed-earth construction could add to the diversity of reservation construction and address future Tribal housing and other building needs.

In small coal mining operations, little is done in controlling supply and material inventories and optimizing total inventory costs. Material Requirements Planning (MRP) is an efficient material control system which time-phases net material requirements based upon production plans, bills of material data, and inventory status records. Inventory levels and total inventory costs are optimized using a lot sizing technique in placing time-phased purchase orders. The MRP system has been applied in large manufacturing firms utilizing mainframe computers, but it can be adapted to micro-computers for inventory control. This paper presents an application designed to assist the coal mine manager in optimizing inventory costs.

Despite the apparently unflattering term filler, this group of industrial materials has become an essential component of many industrial products with varying degrees of sophistication. Mineral fillers are, by definition, inert materials included in a composition for some useful purpose. Included in this broad category are asbestos, barite, bentonite, natural calcium carbonates (limestone), clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc, and other industrial minerals. Also included in this category are synthetic mineral- derived materials such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. Mineral fillers are included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Inclusion of fillers modifies physical characteristics such as hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, surface texture, fire resistance, softening point, and electrical conductivity. Depending upon the performance characteristics of the particular filler used and the quantity of the usage (i.e., percentage added), these materials can enhance the physical and optical properties, price-performance, and appearance of the finished products. These enhancements in properties of the finished compounds are the result of properties of the fillers including chemical activity, purity, hardness, particle size, particle shape, particle size distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. This chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the rationale for their use, trends, and economic factors influencing those trends. Major using industries will be examined in detail with extensive discussion of major fillers used in those industries. The reader is referred to the appropriate commodity chapter for specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals. All of these same filler materials have additional significant uses based on their chemical composition or other characteristics. Cross-references for these will be found in other use chapters and summarized in commodity chapters. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 5th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and synthetic) and their more important end uses.

The impact of recent legislation on Florida phosphate industry operations has been dramatic. The most significant influences are described: the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969; the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972; and implementation of the Florida Environmental Land and Water Management Act of 1972. Further discussion includes: critical examination of the recently completed EPA Areawide EIS; potential effects of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976; the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977; current local and state laws; and summary of studies on radiochemical effects of mining, seepage from gypsum ponds, and dewatering of waste clays.

[According to the Young equation, SG = SL + Coso, the equilibrium contact angle depends on the values of the three interfacial tensions involved. A solute promotes wetting, i. e. a decrease of contact angle if it decreases.LG and/or YSL or if it increases SG. Dewetting, the important step in flotation is, promoted if the solute increases y and/or SL or decreases. Most solutes used for wetting or dewetting are, positively adsorbed at all interfaces involved and consequently according to the Gibbs equation lower the interfacial tensions. Wetting is therefore expected to occur if LG and SL are more affected by the solute than SG. Dewetting on the other, hand demands a greater decrease of SG than that of SL (and of LG). See P. In underground mine production units that employ discrete-vehicle face haulage, feeders are used in the belt network so that vehicles can unload rapidly without transmitting to the conveyor network the high material flow rates that result from rapid unloading. They prevent production bottlenecks at the face, while reducing capacity requirements for downstream materials handling equipment. Similarly, surge bins may be installed at intermediate locations in the network to smooth flows from a number of upstream sources, thereby reducing downstream belt capacity requirements. This paper introduces new stochastic process models to temporally describe loading patterns from unit operations and techniques for computing the probability of various fill levels for the feeder or surge bin. These results may be used to analyze the effect of alternative bin or feeder capacities and discharge rates on the performance and costs of the materials handling system.

Longwall mining is the preferred method for removing underground coal since a larger amount of coal can be removed faster and with less waste when compared to the room-and pillar type mining. Thus, the coal tonnage removed each year by longwall mining methods has increased dramatically. However, a high extraction rate results in surface subsidence which has adverse effects on the environment and on surface structures. Predictions of structural damage are dependent on the magnitude of the expected horizontal strains. Three methods for predicting subsidence characteristics are considered in this paper: the graphical method, the profile method, and the finite element method. All three methods can be used to predict ground movements and horizontal strains. However, the finite element method, which takes into account the structural properties of the stratigraphy and equilibrium of the overburden, is theoretically the more logical choice for use in subsidence prediction.

Waste solutions from sea water desalination processes are enriched in minerals by a factor of two or three. This suggests that extraction of selected mineral components from the concentrated brine might help pay desalination costs. The possible recovery of gold has received particular mention. Sonstadt, in 1872, reported the gold content of sea water as 65,000 micrograms per cubic meter, or 65,000 parts per trillion. At $35 an ounce, this is equivalent to $0.065 per ton of sea water. Fritz Haber, however, after his abortive venture to restore Post War I Germany to economic health by recovering gold from the sea, concluded the gold content was 4 micrograms per cubic meter. Haber's analysis is equivalent to 0.0004 cent per ton. In the past 10 years, investigators using advanced analytical techniques reported from 4 to 27 micrograms per cubic meter. Our brief experiments to determine a threshhold value for the gold in sea water employed solvent extraction for initial concentration, evaporation of the gold-loaded organic for further concentration, and atomic absorption analysis of the gold in the concentrated organic. Radioactive gold was used as a tracer for monitoring the gold through the concentration and analytical steps. Our method established that sea water contains about 11 parts gold per trillion parts sea water, or 0.001 cent worth per ton. This agrees closely with results of recent studies by other investigators employing ion exchange resins and neutron activation techniques.

The purpose of this discussion is to try to offer some suggestions as to how the zinc and lead markets will perform over the balance of the decade, review some of the factors influencing production and come to some conclusions regarding prices. The past 2 years have been simply awful in terms of consumption, prices and overall profitability for the industry. In looking ahead to the year 2,000, it is probably not a bad idea to look back about 20 years to see where we have been and how we got to where we are. Zinc consumption from 1950 to the early 1970's increased steadily and rather nicely at an annual average rate of close to 4.0%. It was starting in the early 1970's that things started to get volatile and at times, difficult for the industry. The general economic boom of the early 70's was marked by annual consumption rates close to 5.0 million tons, a level not seen again for over 10 years. The First Oil shock of 1973-74 was followed by the sharpest consumption drop in memory. In two years, Western World zinc consumption fell 27%. While our chart shows a rather dramatic recovery thereafter, the average annual growth rate since 1970 has only been a rather modest 1.5%.

With computerized balance techniques gaining prominence in recent years, it is essential that engineers understand the basic principles that underlie the new methods, as well as the various applications for design of new plants and analysis of existing operations. This chapter discusses two important types of metallurgical balance: (1) steady-state design (2) operating data adjustment Application of computerized steady- state design balancing is demonstrated through the example of a typical copper concentrator flowsheet. Operating data adjustment to achieve a consistent balance is demonstrated for a typical concentrator operation.

INTRODUCTION The basis for any measures in radiation protection is the quantitative assessment of the radiation exposure. Due to the extensive requirement in health physics manpower and related cost it is necessary to develop certain criteria regarding the necessity of monitoring and the selection of population groups to be monitored. Depending on the overall objective of the particular programme, the specific requirements for the measurement of atmospheric levels of radon, thoron and their daughters for practical radiation protection purposes differ significantly for those in the case of research applications, such as use of data for epidemiological studies. As part of the OECD-NEA Programme on Radon Dosimetry and Monitoring Task Group 1 reviewed available models for lung dosimetry in the case of inhalation of radon 222, radon 220 and their daughters (James et al., 1981). Using defined reference atmospheres for underground- and open-pit mining conditions as well as for dwellings, normalized conversion factors were calculated for the mean bronchial dose (mGy) per Working Level Month exposure (WLM). Task Group 2 discussed the features and adequacy of the Working Level (WL)-concept as a physical correlative of the absorbed lung dose and its limits of confidence and accuracy (Johnson and Leach, 1981). The WL-concept was found acceptable for radiation protection purposes provided that modifying factors like particle size, unattached fraction and respiratory minute volume did not cause the effective dose equivalent per WLM as calculated by either the James-Birchall or Jacobi-Eisfeld lung models to be more than 50 % above that given by ICRP of 0.01 Sv/WLM. For application in epidemiological studies the WLconcept is considered acceptable if the calculated absorbed dose to the tissue does not vary by more than 50 % (at the 95 % confidence level) from that given for defined reference conditions. In the following, objectives and requirements for the measurement of radon, thoron and their daughters are discussed for operational health physics routine and special research applications according to the scheme outlined in Fig. 1.

INTRODUCTION The global market for sulphur has experienced dramatic structural shifts during the past 10-15 years. After a number of years of dominance as sulphur suppliers, the world's Frasch producers were confronted with large increases in nondiscretionary sulphur production from sour crude oil and gas, while escalating energy and exploration costs reduced the economic incentives to replace dwindling sulphur reserves. Sulphur demand also experienced substantial growth, but the majority of this increase was filled by nondiscretionary production. The result was essentially flat demand for Frasch sulphur during this period. This paper briefly summarizes Freeport Sulphur Company's outlook for global supply and demand for sulphur through the year 2000, and examines in more detail the history and anticipated shifts in trade patterns. World trade in elemental sulphur (brimstone), despite year-to-year fluctuations, has been on an upward trend in recent years, and should continue to grow through the end of this century. The type (discretionary vs. nondiscretionary) and location of forecast sulphur supply sources has potentially broad implications for the world's Frasch producers, as they compete in a world market which is increasingly supplied by non-discretionary production. SULPHUR DEMAND Sulphur is a versatile and essential element used in a wide variety of manufacturing processes. Almost 90% of world sulphur consumption is in the form of sulphuric acid. The relatively low cost, ready availability, and physical and chemical properties of sulphuric acid make it the most economical acid for a number of chemical processes. Although sulphur is used in the manufacture of many products, the largest consumer by far is the phosphate fertilizer industry. The majority of sulphur demand growth over the past 30 years has occurred in this area, and today it accounts for nearly 65% of global sulphur consumption in all forms. Due to the relative importance of phosphate fertilizers, sulphur demand is typically discussed in terms of fertilizer and non-fertilizer (or industrial) uses, and this approach will be followed here. We at Freeport believe that global consumption of phosphate fertilizers should grow at an average annual rate of about 3.5% through the year 2000, which is roughly equal to the growth rate experienced during the past ten years. The basic assumption underlying this forecast is that world population will continue to grow significantly, while the total acres of cropland will grow only slightly. Therefore, in order to feed a growing population, higher crop yields will be necessary, which in turn will require the increasing use of fertilizers. This expected growth in phosphate consumption will, without doubt, fluctuate from year to year, and we Frasch producers have painful memories of the large dip in demand during 1982-83. However, we believe that the fundamentals for growth are very good, and that future demand will move back onto the historical trend line. In the recent recession the use of sulphur in the non-fertilizer or industrial sector dropped sharply, and it now appears that future growth will not return to the old trend line. Most of the non-fertilizer uses of sulphur and sulphuric acid involve older industries which are very mature, such as oil refining, steel, pulp and paper, pigments, etc. The use of sulphur in some of these industries is expected to exhibit little or possibly even negative

The area of flotation testing of drill-core is important in the business plan of most mining companies. Metallurgical information derived from this practice can be used to advantage in strategic decision-making. Sampling, flotation testing and subsequent Qem SCAN analysis of a mineral resource is one example of this approach. Anew resource, located in Sudbury, Ontario, is being assessed for the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited, which includes the Strathcona Mill. In this case, it was possible to improve the value of information from sampling and flotation testwork by using an improved, statistically-based test design, by sampling the resource by generic end-member ore type, and by integrating the Mineral Processing and Mineral Science disciplines into a Process Mineralogy team. In addition to producing standard metal grade and recovery information, this new approach provides more reproducible information from representative samples and flotation testing in a replicate format. Qem SCAN technology is used to produce a size by size mineral balance, including both modal percentages and liberation, from which flotation models for each ore type can be developed. As a result, a key understanding of the potential behaviour of a given ore type, if mined and then processed at the current mill operation, is gained at the 95%confidence level. The three ore types of this mineral resource were shown to have different flotation characteristics. Quantifying the mineralogy and liberation in each of the three ore types, has shown that this difference is due to changes in modal percentages of ferro-magnesium and magnesium silicate minerals such as pyroxene, talc and serpentine. Liberation across the three ore types is very similar and is therefore not responsible for variation in flotation performance.
