The application of automatic control to mineral processing operations has been gaining momentum during recent years. Many strategies are being developed for controlling crushing, grinding and flotation circuits, however, their implementation in industrial plants is being slowed down because of the costs and difficulties in evaluating these strategies in a systematic manner. An interactive computer simulation package, developed at the University of California, provides the capability of analyzing the process dynamics of mineral processing circuits. This paper presents an overview of the simulator and its application to the case studies of grinding and flotation.

The Tintaya mine of BHP Copper, located in Southern Peru, includes a copper oxide deposit hosted in a mineralized skarn zone. The ore contains large amounts of clays and high acid consuming species resulting in low heap leaching performance. A treatment scheme was proposed that included a wet screening separation. The coarse fraction would be treated by heap and the fines by agitation leaching. The dissolved copper would then be recovered through solvent extraction and electrowinning (SXEW). Testwork determined the optimum heap leaching conditions to treat the oxide in on/off pads of 3 meter height with an initial acid cure followed by variable acid strength during irrigation. The method resulted in a reduced acid consumption and good copper recoveries.

For the past 50 years, the primary crushing of stone at the Dolase Bros. Co. Richards Spur Quarry. 13 miles north of Lawton, Oklahoma, has been accomplished by a Traylor 42-inch gyratory crusher. The production capacity of the primary system, consisting of a feeder, grizzly, and the gyratory crusher, was approximately 2100 tons per hour. Shot-down scone was hauled from the working face about one mile to the feeder by a fleet of Caterpillar Model 773's and WABCO 60- and 65-ton trucks. In order to maintain production, nine to ten trucks and four Caterpillar Model 992 front-end loaders were required to be operational at all times.

For variable speed mills, the operating range for mill speed has to be defined so that mill power/torque requirement can be matched by the motor power/torque capability. This paper will describe how this relationship can be influenced by ore grindability.

Analytical and computer models are used to evaluate information obtained for the design and development of mine water control systems. Geologic, hydrologic, geophysical, biological, and chemical data must be gathered for use during all stages of mine development. Models allow the geohydrologist to use these data to predict the amount of ground-water inflow, the impact of dewatering and stream diversion on the hydrologic regime, equipment needs, and dewatering schedules. Stratigraphic and lithologic changes, faults, recharge and discharge areas, and aquifer parameters should be incorporated into the model to design and develop an effective mine water control system.

The Magenta underground station was constructed in the heart of Paris in saturated soft soil and at shallow depth. To investigate the surface settlement and the deformation of the concrete liner, innovative techniques combined with a vast campaign of monitoring were applied. The monitoring data and a simple three-dimensional ?nite element analysis were used to assess the accuracy of the two-dimensional ?nite element model originally utilized in the design of the station. The deformation of the concrete liner was monitored using vibrating wire extensometers. Their performance was validated by the data obtained from monitoring and also by a simpli?ed ?nite element analysis.

Multiple seam underground coal mining is ubiquitous in Appalachia. Many coal properties have from two to ten or more economically mineable coal seams. Because of the ability to penetrate 600-feet to 1,000-feet or deeper into the mountainside leaving panels of web pillars separated by barrier pillars, highwall mining is a hybrid between surface and underground mining. As a result, many of the ground control problems commonly associated with multiple seam underground mining exist with multiple seam highwall mining. These include: i) multiple seam interaction between web and barrier pillars in superjacent mines, ii) subsidence and caving propagating to overlying seams and mines, iii) pooled water and the potential for inundation resulting from a breakthrough between an active highwall mine and abandoned underground mines in the same or superjacent seams, iv) the presence of overlying or underlying mine workings where pillar columnization in the active mine is not possible, and v) the question of whether to mine ?top-down? or ?bottom-up.? Case histories are presented from southeast Ohio where the Middle Kittanning No. 6 and Lower Kittanning No. 5 seams are successfully highwall mined with 20-feet to 40-feet of largely shale interburden. A highwall miner was caught in a highwall collapse in the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam when it was overmining auger workings in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. Multiple seam interaction caused by the overmining transferred overburden stress onto the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. The overburden concentrated through web pillars initiated auger web pillar failure, resulting in roof collapse and subsidence in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam that propagated up to the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam. A second case history involves multiple seam highwall mining in southeast Kentucky. The A3 Rider, A3, B2, and C1 seams are being highwall mined around abandoned underground mines in the A3 and B2 seams and augering in the A3 Rider. Because of spoil storage constraints for the surface contour mines, the highwall miner follows the active pits in each seam so a standard sequence of ?top-down? or ?bottom-up mining does not exist.

During the past fifteen years considerable progress has been made in the technology of slope design. It is possible to design rational slope angles if suitable data on geology, hydrology, and rock properties are available. It is of course preferable to conduct a full scale slope design study, but there are those situations where a full scale study is not feasible because of time and budget constraints. In this paper we will treat two situations: (1) choosing slope angles for a preliminary feasibility study at the exploration stage; and (2) dealing with a slope failure in an operating pit. In these instances slope angles must often be chosen on the basis of available or readily obtained data. In an exploration program all too often a feasibility study is initiates just a few months prior to the decision deadline to drop the property or to exercise an expensive purchase option. If all that is available at this point are a few cross sections at odd angles showing ore and waste contacts and a dog-earred map of the surface geology there may not be time to collect and organize enough information for design of slope angles. On the other hand if during the drilling program geologic cross sections are constructed and the structural data is presented in tabular form, rational slope angles can be determined within the allotted time. Certain types of data can be collected only at specific times during a project. Two prime examples are logging fracture intensity and collecting samples for rock testing before the core is split. It is particularly disheartening to ask to see the core and to be shown a tattered cardboard box filled with plastic bags of sample pulps.

Introduction Mine sampling determines the practicality of any mining operation. Improper sampling can result in an incorrect appraisal of present production and future potential. Therefore, the mine department in charge of ore-reserve calculations and mine sampling should be overseen by competent and experienced professionals with technical backgrounds qualifying them to produce accurate results. Sampling is a process by which portions of an ore body are collected and analyzed to estimate the average mineral content of the entire ore body. It is incorrect to assume that a large number of samples eliminates any errors in the sampling method. To obtain unbiased samples, proper sample location with respect to rock type and mineralization is just as important. The sampling procedure must yield correct results for the type of mineral deposit, and careful consideration should be given to whether or not the sampling technique has been developed to an extent sufficient to eliminate as much human error and bias as possible. Only after the ore has been mined and milled is the sampling accuracy known. Sampling also provides information about the bulk composition of the ore for mineralogical and metallurgical tests that determine the economic ore-waste boundaries and the geologic trends for exploration. Actual mining plans can be developed from this information to maximize profits. Accurate sampling is critical, and thus must be approached in a scientific manner. Sampling Techniques Sampling practices and techniques are as varied as the mines in which they are used. The method(s) chosen must be tailored to suit the company and mining needs. For instance, tabular uranium deposits, vein gold deposits, and porphyry copper deposits pose special problems in conducting unbiased sampling. The mine geologist or engineer in charge must develop a sampling method, test it in a sample area, and then critically evaluate the results. If the results from the test area are accurate within the economic limits established by the company, they then may be adopted for general use in the mine. Four routine sampling methods are suitable for specific sampling objectives in the daily mine routine: (1) channel sampling, (2) chip sampling, (3) grab sampling, and (4) bulk sampling. The final sampling results depend upon how the four methods are combined to accurately determine the grade of the ore body. When used in conjunction with each other during different stages of mine development, the channel, chip, grab, and bulk sampling methods provide an in-house check or a comparison by which mining methods and sampling procedures can be evaluated. However, the most valid check is based upon the daily mill production. Channel Sampling Channel samples consist of cuttings collected from a groove cut into the rock about 102 mm (4 in.) wide and 19 mm (0.75 in.) deep. Various tools ranging from a 1.8-kg (4-lb) hammer and moil to a pneumatic chisel can be used to cut the sample. Accessibility and rock hardness determine the applicable sampling tools. Before attempting to take a sample, the rock surface must be cleaned thoroughly; the method of cleaning depends upon the amount of mine dust accumulated on the surface or the degree of alteration of the rock surface. Typical cleaning methods 'employ a wire brush, water, or chipping a fresh surface. Next, the sample outline is marked on the prepared surface, taking care to choose appropriate sample loca- tions. After determining the proper sample outline and length, the sample can be chiseled out, catching the rock fragments on a canvas tarpaulin on the floor, in a powder box, in a canvas bag to avoid contamination, or by some other suitable means to capture all of the sample. Vertical veins present a special problem because the drift's back usually is arched, not square. For example, Fig. 1 shows that if sample intervals are measured from A' to D', the length of the sample interval is greater than the true vein width, resulting in an incorrect calculation of the ore reserves. The correct method would collect three samples at A'-B', B'-C', and C'-D', using either actual measurements in the mine represented by A-B, B-C, and C-D or trigonometric calculations to determine the true ore thickness. Then, each sample can be weighted by grade and true thickness for the vein. Channel lengths usually are a maximum of 1.5 m (5 ft), and it is good practice to divide longer samples into smaller intervals according to structures, changes in rock types, or differences in rock hardnesses. The influence of those features on the mineralization then can be determined. Chip Sampling Chip sampling is a variation of channel sampling used when the rock is too hard to channel sample economically or when little variation in the mineral content indicates that this sampling method will yield results similar to those of channel sampling. Rather than cutting a channel in the rock, small chips are flaked off at regular intervals over the entire face or area being the mine. sampled. Care must be taken to assure that the sample is representative of variations in the rock hardness and type. hi^ method is fast and useful in preliminary evaluations, but it should not be used for quantitative ore-reserve calculations. Grab Sampling Grab sampling is a fast method for double checking either channel or chip-sampling procedures, and, in some instances, mine production can be estimated from carefully taken grab samples. Grab sampling takes equal amounts of material at selected intervals over a mine dump, a muck pile, or from an ore car to estimate its Channel Sampling mineral content. Generally, this method is not considered reliable. Many independent variables can affect this type of sampling process. Statistical exploration uses statistical methods to identify targets for more detailed investigation by estimating the odds of occurrence of mineral deposits. The study area which contains the possible targets may be as large as 1 000 000 km2 or as small as 100 km2. Results are presented in terms of a probability index for the existence of a deposit or, more precisely, in terms of expected dollar value for a unit area, or even in terms of number, size, and grade of deposits remaining to be discovered. Typically, selected geological, geophysical, or geochemical information is systematically quantified and statistically analyzed by using the computer in order to distinguish between geological environments on the basis of the probability that they contain undiscovered deposits of a specific type. All possible targets are compared with one another by using information on areas known to contain deposits. The information on the known areas is either a set of control data consisting of values for the same parameters as are quantified for the entire study area, or it embodies a specific model for the occurrence of a given deposit type. Examples of both procedures will be discussed in this chapter.

The Republic of Ghana, located on the West Coast of Africa, is one of the West African countries rich in bauxite deposits. The main occurrences of bauxite deposits are at Sefwi Bekwai in the Western Region, Aya-Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region, Atewa Range near Kibi and at Mount Ejuanema both in the Eastern Region of Ghana. These bauxite deposits belong to the so-called blanket deposits as they are associated with erosion surfaces of old peneplains and occur as cappings on the flat tops of hills or mountains whose heights are generally greater than 600 metres above sea level. These deposits can also be classified as laterite-silicate bauxites since they have been formed under tropical weathering conditions. Genetic and mineralogical investigations have revealed that all bauxite deposits of Ghana are the result of indirect bauxitization processes, for the minerals of the weathering parent rocks have not been transformed directly into gibbsite. In all cases, lithomarge of kaolinitic clay can be recognised. The geology of the major occurrences of bauxite in Ghana shows that the Mount Ejuanema deposit is the only deposit associated with the Voltaian System of rocks. This rock System consists mainly of sandstone, shale, mudstone, conglomerates and pebbly beds. All the otter deposits are associated with the Birimian System of rocks which are made up of metamorphosed lavas,pyroclastic rocks, hypabyssal basic intrusives, phyllites, schists, tuffs and greywackes.

Dupont has successfully incorporated a Floatex Density Separator into its wet-gravity operations for the recovery of zircon from titanium tailings. Results indicate that the Floatex achieved a zircon recovery of approximately 95% while rejecting similar amounts of quartz and other gangue minerals. Additionally, a unit capacity approaching 16 tonnes/hr/m2 was achieved. Results also show that the alumino-silicates can be separated into other product streams that will further improve process economics and minimize waste material. The improved plant feed grade provided by the Floatex has allowed for either an increase in overall plant capacity and/or final product grade. This paper will present the findings from the in-plant study.

When OSHA came into existence in 1970, it adopted national consensus standards to improve safety and health conditions in work places. Coke oven emissions, which are proven to cause cancer and respiratory diseases, were regulated by the coal tar pitch volatile standard, adopted from the 1969 edition of the Threshold Limit Values for Airborne Contaminants by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. The coal tar pitch standard, based upon the benzene soluble fraction of total particulates, limits the personal exposure to 200 micrograms of the benzene soluble fractions of total particulate per cubic meter of air. This standard can be classified as a performance standard because only general limits are set which allows the employer to choose for themselves the means to comply. Both the United Steelworkers of America and the American Iron and Steel Institute petitioned the Secretary of Labor to write a new standard for coke oven missions, each thinking the coal tar pitch standard unsatisfactory.

Abstract. The Hoskold mineral valuation method was critically examined. The original derivation was presented and found to contain a number cf erroneous assumptions as follows: the sinking fund must be available for reinvestment in another property; the series of reinvestment of the sinking fund results in a perpetual annuity to the investor, and; evaluation of the present value of the net cash flows at the speculative rate of interest. The proper procedure of deriving the Hoskhold mineral valuation formula was discussed and illustrated with a cumulative cash position diagram, a useful tool in economic evaluation and investment decision methods.

Originally, the term solution mining applied to a dissolution, washing, or "brining" of soluble salts such as halite (common table salt), potash or trona. After the mid-sixties, however, the definition has been expanded to include heap and dump leaching, in-place (in situ) leaching, removal of oil from tar sands, extraction of sulfur from deep wells by the Frasch process and the recovery of metalliferous solutions from geothermal sources. Solution mining is also known as borehole, non-shaft, or chemical mining; the extraction of soluble mineral values from a variety of ores using appropriate solvents and chemicals. Solution mining frequently involves chemical changes; for example, copper usually goes into solution as copper sulfate, gold and silver as a cyanide compound, and uranium as a sulfate or uranyl tricarbonate. The valuable constituent is removed from the solid body of the ore by mass transfer to a aqueous solution.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral because it exhibits desirable properties in many applications and because of its relatively low cost, Approximately 2,000,000 tons of kaolin from Georgia and South Carolina are processed and used commercially in the United States each year. Strictly defined, the name kaolin is applied to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates of which the mineral kaolinite is the most common. Kaolinite has such desirable properties as natural whiteness, chernical stability, non- abrasiveness, and very fine particle size. Kaolinite particles are characteristically thin, flat, and hexagonal in outline. The particles range in size from submicron to as much as 40 microns (equivalent spherical diameter). In addition to the general properties mentioned in the first paragraph, it is soft, has low viscosity at high solids content in many systems, is readily wet and dispersed in water and some organic systems, and can be produced with a controlled particle size distribution. Some of the important physical constants of kaolin are: specific gravity, 2.60; index of refraction, 1.56; hardness (Mohs scale), 2; fusion temperature, 1850°C; dry brightness, 78-92 percent.1

This study presents the methodology and proposals for the restoration of an abandoned quarry in the Greek island of Milos. The local data (soil, vegetation etc.) of the island were collected, analysed and compiled into thematic maps using Geographical Information Systems. The restoration plan was based on the G.I.S. database and suggested the revegetation of the disturbed lands with herbaceous (grasses and legumes) or woody (shrubs and trees) plants. Plants should be indigenous or from other areas with the same vegetation type. Herbaceous plants establish and grow easily protecting the soil from surface erosion. The revegetation success depends on the seed quality, planting season and methods as well as local environmental conditions. Our proposals aim to restore the abandoned quarry with methods that follow the natural succession of vegetation, have minimal environmental impact, low cost and the expected result will be similar to the surrounding undisturbed land.

During in situ uranium mining using ammonium bicarbonate lixiviant, the ammonium exchanges with cations on the ore's clay. Mter mining is complete, the ammonium may desorb into post-leach ground water. For the particular ore studied, other chemicals (i.e., uranium and selenium) which are mobilized during the leach process, have also been found in the post-leach ground water. Laboratory column tests, used to simulate the leaching process, have shown that aluminum chloride can rapidly remove ammonium from the ore and thus greatly reduce the subsequent ammonium leakage level into ground water. The aluminum chloride has also been found to reduce the leakage levels of uranium and selenium. In addition, the aluminum chloride treatment produces a rapid improvement in permeability.

In open-pit mining, blasting pattern design is performed to achieve a desired degree of fragmentation for loading, hauling, and crushing operations. Inappropriate fragmentation of rock will result in numerous problems such as incurring extra costs for secondary blasting, production interruption, etc. Wetness of the blast holes is one of the most important factors, which can cause the inappropriate rock fragmentation. Lowering ambient temperature in the vicinity of the explosion, the presence of water in the hole adversely affects the quality of the explosive while dissipating part of the explosion energy, ending up with inappropriate fragmentation problems. In the present research, in order to study blast-induced fragmentation conditions in Baba-Ali Iron Ore Mine, three scenarios were considered: explosion of ammonium nitrate with fuel oil (ANFO) in dry hole, explosion of ANFO in wet hole, and explosion of the emulsion in wet hole. For this purpose LS-DYNA, a numerical simulation code was used. Results of the present research showed that, compared to the explosion of ANFO in wet hole, the explosion of the emulsion produced more uniform distribution of fragment size, while the explosion of ANFO in dry hole resulted in fewer large fragments.
