The City of Toronto is currently undertaking the design of the Black Creek Sanitary Trunk Sewer Relief Project. The Project involves the design and construction of approximately 20 kilometers of tunnel through shale rock of the Georgian Bay Formation and soft ground soil consisting of glacial till, glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sand, silt and clay deposits. The 20 kilometer alignment has been split into four sections of tunnel (1) the 12.9 km, 3.0 meter diameter Keele Trunk Relief Sewer, (2) the 2.9 km, 1.5 meter diameter Keele Trunk Relief Sewer Microtunnel, (3) the 3.9 km, 1.8 meter diameter Jane Relief Sewer, and (4) the 0.5 km,1.5 meter diameter Combined Sewer Overflow Storage Tunnel. Additionally, one 40,000 m3 wet weather flow (WWF) storage tank and numerous WWF connection shafts are to be constructed and connected to the Keele Trunk Relief Sewer to pick up WWF from existing outfalls currently discharging to Black Creek. The anticipated cost of the project is approximately $600 million with construction of the Project’s Phase One Works, the Keele Trunk Relief Sewer and Jane Relief Sewer, scheduled to commence in 2025. This paper provides an overview of the project in terms of the anticipated geotechnical conditions, the scheme developed for design and construction of the tunnel system and the associated schedule and procurement strategy. The consideration for planning of the tunnel system, the risk-based analysis and decision-making process are presented and form the basis for selection of a precast tunnel lining support method in the rock and soft ground.

Operating and maintaining the heavy equipment used in open-pit mining operations is an ongoing challenge for mines. Typical operations employ a combination of shovels, wheel loaders, and haul trucks to excavate and transport the material for further processing. As this is the first point of contact for the material after blasting, it is often a bottleneck of all downstream processes, thus, equipment uptime and efficiency is crucial. Automated systems for bucket tooth monitoring, payload measurement, proximity detection, and rock fragmentation analysis will be examined. The impact of these systems on operation safety, efficiency, and reliability, in real-world scenarios will be investigated. The process of managing all the above fleet of equipment in a mine can be streamlined by connecting the equipment monitoring systems to a central server. Using the central server, the distribution of this information can be automated to ensure that the right people see the data in a timely manner, improving both proactive and reactive responses to threats to safety and productivity.

"In order to conserve the coal resources, many coal mines which have been mined begin to re-mine. Re-mining face is of complicated circumstances and coal spontaneous combustion is unknown, so experiments are designed to study the characteristics of multiple oxidized coal samples. The investigation into the oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. The non-caking coal is collected as coal samples. The raw coal sample with initial oxidation and the sample after second oxidation and third oxidation are obtained after a certain treatment of the coal. The temperature-programmed system, and proximate and ultimate analysis are adopted to compare the releases of gaseous products of spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of the multiple oxidized coal sample. With the increase of oxidation times, experimental results indicate that the oxygen consumption rate, the release rate of carbon monoxide and the intensity of heat release are significantly decrease. The characteristic temperature dropped and the size of the pores in coal is smaller as well. INTRODUCTION China accounts for 13% of global coal resources [1-2]. In recent years, more and more coal mines begin to re-mine in order to conserve resources. This production mode is to mine coal pillar left by last exploitation or unavailable for mining. In the process of slicing mining for coal seam groups or thick coal seams, the second or multiple oxidation due to the mining-induced effect, may take place in the goaf of the lower seam. So the spontaneous combustion is prone to occur in this area. The study on oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. Scholars [3-7] have discussed the workability of re-mining for coal mines, verify the feasibility of the existing mining technology for re-mining area, and set up the prevention measures of coal spontaneous combustion. But all these measures are only based on on-site observation data, instead of experiment on spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of re-mining coal samples which have a great importance for early prediction and forecast. The authors aim at investigating the multiple-oxidated coal spontaneous combustion law, and perfecting the coal spontaneous combustion mechanism to provide a basis for the prediction and forecast."

"Constructed between 1939 and 1945, the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct is 45 miles (72 km) long. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) first identified suspected areas of leakage from the RWBT in the 1990s. A $1 billion project is underway to mitigate the leakage through the construction of a bypass tunnel around the area of most severe deterioration, a 2.5-mile (4 km) section located beneath the Hudson River. Two shafts, 800 and 900 feet (244 and 274 m) below the ground surface, are being sunk to support the tunnel construction. The deep shafts will be subjected to high groundwater pressures and have been designed to accommodate multiple tunnel portals. This paper discusses the engineering decisions and analyses leading up to the final design. INTRODUCTION Project Background The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) provides over 1 billion gallons (3.7 billion liters) of water to over 9 million residents of the City of New York and surrounding communities each day. This water is stored in upstate reservoirs and conveyed to the City via a system of aqueducts and tunnels. Water is delivered to the City almost completely by gravity and consists of three systems: the Croton, the Catskill, and the Delaware. The Delaware System is the largest of the three and supplies between 50% and 70% of the City’s daily water supply. In the 1990s, the NYCDEP discovered leaks in the central 45-mile-long (72 km) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct known as the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT). The leaks release between 15 and 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million liters per day) and are concentrated in two areas near Wawarsing and Roseton, New York. As part of the Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel and Wawarsing Repairs Project (Bypass Tunnel Project), the leaks in the Wawarsing area will be repaired by grouting from inside the existing RWBT, and the leaks in the Roseton area will be mitigated by constructing a bypass tunnel parallel to and 1,750 feet (533 m) north of the leaking portion of the existing RWBT. Two deep shafts will be excavated on either side of the Hudson River: Shaft 5B in Newburgh and Shaft 6B in the Town of Wappinger."

During the 14 years since the last update to National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101), there have been many discussions between Canadian regulators and mining companies about mining disclosure deficiencies that arise from regulatory reviews. These discussions are not made public, and as a result, there has been some drift in how NI 43-101 is interpreted by the regulators, which in turn creates uncertainty for the mining companies trying to comply with the instrument. To reduce uncertainty in mining disclosure requirements, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) has issued a notice to update the current NI 43-101 with a streamlined instrument and form. Changes and benefits are listed in the “CSA Notice and Request for Comment — Proposed Repeal and Replacement of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects,” which is available on the Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia Securities Commission websites. The public has been invited to comment, with the comment period ending on Oct. 10, 2025. The 43-101 Companion Policy (43-101 CP) provides an update to the views of the regulators on how the CSA staff interpret and apply certain provisions of the instrument. Collectively, some of the changes to NI 43-101, the form and 43-101 CP are likely to increase the financial and other burdens on the mining companies responsible for the disclosure, and the qualified persons (QPs) who create the disclosure. In other instances, there are missed opportunities to reduce the burden on mining companies and QPs without impacting the markets.

INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal cleaning by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken the loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Netherlands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War II in the laboratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15-tph (13.6 t/h) pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of Fuel in London.51 In April 1945, operation of this pilot plant was observed by H. F. Yancey, who was so impressed with the potential of the cyclone process that, on his return to the United States, a research program on the cyclone was immediately started by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). This work led to an AIME paper in 1946 in which the first details of cyclone operation on American coals were made available.52 Commercial adoption of the cyclone proceeded in Europe, initially in the Netherlands, Germany, and France. In the United States, where coal is less costly and most of the coals are easy to clean and respond well to simpler cleaning processes, the first cyclone plant was not built until 1961.53 THEORY Before discussing the theory of a dense-medium cyclone, a brief description may be helpful to some readers who are not familiar with its basic operation. In a typical dense-medium cyclone, illustrated in Fig.7-51 a mixture of medium and raw coal enters tangentially near the top of the cylindrical section, thus forming a strong vortical flow. The refuse moves along the wall of the cyclone and is discharged through the underflow orifice. The washed coal moves toward the longitudinal axis of the cyclone and passes through the overflow orifice, or vortex finder, to the overflow chamber. Washed coal is discharged from this chamber, usually through a tangential outlet.

INTRODUCTION Coal flotation is a fine cleaning process usually present in all but the older preparation plants. It is typically used to clean either the -28 mesh (-500 pm) or - 100 mesh (- 150 pm) raw coal fines, and it is the only commonly used preparation method that can effectively recover coal particles finer than, say, -200 mesh (74 pm). To place coal flotation into its proper context, it should be noted that the bulk of the raw coal sent to preparation plants is treated by gravity concentration. On a worldwide basis, from 0 to 40% of the raw feed to a preparation plant is treated by flotation, while in the US only about 10% of the raw coal feed is floated. Roughly, 50% of US preparation plants use flotation to process at least a portion of the raw coal feed, although most of the newer plants incorporate flotation into their flowsheet. Historically, the process has only been used to treat the raw coal fines naturally occurring after mining and a minimal amount of crushing at the preparation plant. This is in sharp contrast to ore flotation where, typically, the entire tonnage is first ground and then floated. As a consequence, of the approximately 500 Mt of raw coal treated by preparation in the US yearly, it is estimated that only about 40 Mt are sent to the flotation circuits (producing -30 Mt of clean product).'O1 This small tonnage compares with about 400 Mt of ores treated annually in the US by flotation. By analogy to ore flotation, where it is an effective, large tonnage, low cost, easy to operate process, its potential in coal preparation should be great. Reasons why it has not achieved a greater potential in coal preparation have been attributed by Aplan 102 to: 1. Indifferent results in removing sulfur and ash. 2. Difficulty in floating low rank and oxidized coals. 3. Inability to make clean separations with the finer sizes. 4.Inability to clean slurries with a high percentage of clay. 5. Problems with water chemistry. 6. Competition with effective, gravity coarse-cleaning methods. 7. Low value of coal historically. 8. Dewatering problems. 9. Transportation and storage problems with coal fines. 10. Marketing problems with coal fines. 11. Inadequate attention to the process in the plant. 12. Inefficient use of capital and operating monies. Inadequate attention to procedures, machines, and processes.

Of the six forms of asbestos, only three have been used to any significant extent in commerce. These are chrysotile, crocidolite, and amosite. Between 1870 and 1980, approximately 100 million tonnes of asbestos was mined worldwide, of which more than 90 million tonnes was the chrysotile variety, about 2.7 million tonnes the crocidolite variety, and about 2.2 million tonnes the amosite variety. The three principal diseases related to asbestos exposure are (1) lung cancer, (2) cancer of the pleural and peritoneal membranes (mesothelioma), and (3) asbestosis, a condition in which the lung tissue becomes fibrous and thus loses its ability to function. These diseases, however, are not equally prevalent in the various groups of asbestos workers that have been studied: the amount and type of disease depend on the duration of exposure, the intensity of exposure, and particularly, the type or types of asbestos to which the individual has been exposed. Lung cancer is caused by exposure to chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite asbestos; however, increased risk of this disease is usually found only in those who also smoke. Asbestosis is caused by prolonged exposure to all forms of asbestos, whereas mesothelioma is principally caused by exposure to crocidolite asbestos. There is good evidence that chrysotile asbestos does not cause any significant amount of mesothelioma mortality, even after very heavy exposure. The common nonasbestiform amphibole minerals, cummingtonite, grunerite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite, which are often defined as "asbestos" for regulatory purposes, have not been shown to cause disease in miners. Chrysotile asbestos, which accounts for about 95 percent of the asbestos used in the United States, has been shown by extensive Canadian studies to be safe when exposures do not exceed 1 fiber per cm3 for the working lifetime. Chrysotile dust levels found in buildings rarely exceed 0.001 fibers per cm3. Such dust concentrations will have no measurable health effect on the building occupants. Present and future controls of minerals defined as "asbestos" and removal of asbestos from buildings and homes may cost many billions of dollars. Much of this expense is unnecessary and even counterproductive. Asbestos abatement could in fact produce a health risk to those exposed to dusts during and after removal operations overly restrictive controls could force the use of poor or dangerous substitutes, and could greatly affect the hard-rock mining industry.

Iron oxides are unique in that they are the only significant colored mineral found in a natural state suitable for use as a pigment after being pulverized to pigmentary size. The world production of iron oxide pigments is estimated by the authors to be between 350 and 400 kt. The fact that highly colored natural deposits of iron ore are found throughout the world accounts for its use in prehistoric man's artistic cave paintings. These early artists did not realize that they had established man's first paint test which now has some 20,000 years of exposure. In addition to abundance, iron oxides (about 7% of the earth's crust) have the advantage of low cost, permanency, and are non- toxic. Through the centuries, succeeding civilizations have utilized iron oxides as a major source for decoration and protection when these properties were desired. In the last century the chemical industry has improved on nature by developing a complete range of synthetic iron oxide pigments which surpass the pigments produced from natural iron ores in uniformity, color quality, and chemical purity. In the United States, the combined production of natural and synthetic iron oxides produced sales of over $97 million in 1980 (Spimad, Jr., 1980), increasing to $138 million by 1990 (Templeton, 1990) NOMENCLATURE With the increasing importance of the synthetic iron oxides it is necessary to make a distinction between the natural or mineral pigments and the synthetic pigments. Natural pigments are those products that are derived from selected ores and should not be confused with iron ores mined for steel production. Iron ores that are mined for steel must be capable of being mined and reduced to iron on a competitive commercial basis. These ores are selected on the basis of iron content and processing economics. It is therefore unusual when iron ores for steel production are suitable for use as mineral pigments. Natural pigment ore sources are selected for their special physical-chemical properties and are able to command a premium price over iron ores used for steel manufacturing. Synthetic pigments, and in this instance iron oxides, are those pigments produced from basic chemicals. Through chemical synthesis pigmentary particles are produced as opposed to the use of comminution, the major procedure common to all natural iron oxide pigments.

INTRODUCTION The paper presents a broad overview of the geotechnical site studies required for siting uranium tailings dams. These studies, which are interdisciplinary in nature, touch upon such related fields as: hydrogeology, hydrology, and seismicity. Tailings dams are commonly used to develop tailings ponds for the storage of the waste products generated by mine milling operations. In the past, most tailings ponds have been developed either above ground on dry land, or in existing lakes. In the United States a majority of the uranium mines are located in arid or semi-arid regions and past practice has been to store the wastes above ground on dry land (1,2). Currently, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (N.R.C.) recommends below ground disposal of uranium waste products, although they indicate that they will consider above ground alternatives (3). In Canada many of the existing uranium mines are located in a wet environment and past practice has been to use small lakes and depressions as tailings ponds (1,4). However, current practice in Canada leans towards above ground, dry-land storage (5,6,7), and the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) guidelines (5) indicate this to be the preferable method. In B.C., where a moratorium on uranium mining has been declared by the Provincial Government, there are no existing uranium tailings ponds. However, both the formerly proposed Birch Island and Blizzard uranium developments would have used dry land storage. Most of the existing non-uranium mill wastes in B.C. are stored behind tailings dams on dry land. The waste products delivered to the tailings pond comprise, the ground-up rock that remains after most of the uranium values have been removed and the excess chemicals used in the milling process. These waste products, which are called "tailings", are normally mixed with water to produce a slurry and then pumped to the tailings pond. Since the uranium recovered constitutes only a small percentage of the ore (usually less than 1%) (8), large quantities of waste rock and associated transportation water are discharged into the tailings impoundment area. Consequently, relatively large tailings pond areas are required for the uranium tailings. In recent years, major advances have been made in the design, construction, and operation of non-uranium tailings storage facilities (9,10,11,12,13,14, 15). "Rock tunnels suffered severe damage from recent large earthquakes in Japan, despite the empirical knowledge that tunnels tolerate earthquakes better than surface structures. Seismic design for rock tunnels have therefore become a fascinating subject for many tunnel engineers. However, even basic behavior, including deformation mode and loading magnitude for hard-rock TBM tunnels and conventional ones during earthquake, has not been fully understood due to lack of actual seismic data; while EPB and slurry TBM tunnels take account of seismic design in Japan if needed. This study conducted a dynamic measurement in an actual road tunnel constructed in rock. The strongest aftershock of “the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake” (Mw = 7.1) occurred during the measurement, providing precious data to examine deformation mode of the tunnel. Considering the acquired data, numerical analysis was also performed to calculate loading magnitude to cause fatal fracture of tunnel lining during earthquake.INTRODUCTIONLarge earthquakes can pose serious risks even for rock tunnels, as evidenced by large earthquakes in the past. In the large earthquake in Japan in 2004 (Mw = 6.6), some tunnels suffered severe damage including collapse of their permanent lining (Mashimo 2005), even though the tunnels were constructed in ordinary ground conditions except for fault, fracture zone, portal area, etc. To mitigate such risks, mechanical behavior of tunnel lining during earthquake should be clarified; however, even basic mechanical behavior including load-bearing capacity of the tunnel lining against earthquake is not fully understood.Numerous damage modes were actually observed due to various ground conditions (eg. Wang et al. 2001; Mashimo 2005). Among them, major tunnel damage caused by earthquakes can be grouped into three main modes as shown in Figure 1, excluding extremely unusual conditions such as a tunnel located on a stratum boundary where the stratum stiffness varies significantly. TYPE-I shows flexural failure or crack by bending moment at shoulders; TYPE-II indicates compression failure or flexural compression failure at crown; and TYPE-III illustrates compression failure at sidewall, mainly observed on tunnel that was constructed using steel ribs and lagging method. These damage modes, Type-I, II and III, are predominantly caused by shearing, horizontal compressing and vertical compressing deformations of the surrounding ground, respectively (Kusaka et al. 2011; Asakura et al. 2001)."

First reports of microbial coal solubilization appeared in the early 1980's (Fakoussa, 1981; Fakoussa and Truper, 1983; Cohen and Gabriele, 1982). These degradations, which occurred at ambient temperature and pressure, resulted in a dark brown to black viscous liquid and required days to weeks to occur. Rates and degrees of coal biodegradation varied from coal to coal. Hard coals were not extensively degraded (5-7%) while low-rank coals such as Leonardite, a sublignite, were completely solubilized. A correlation between degree of weathering or oxidation of coal and the coals susceptibility to biological attack was observed. This led to oxidative pretreatments as a method to enhance microbial degradation of coal (Strandberg and Lewis, 1986). Products of microbial degradation of coal are water soluble solids that do not have significant solubilities in organic solvents (Wilson, et. al., 1987; Quigley, et. al., 1987; Quigley, et. al., 1988a). Solutions of solubilized coal did not separate or form precipitates which suggested that they were true solutions and not colloidal suspensions. Biosolubilized coal contained more oxygen than starting material suggesting that microbial attack of coals involved oxidative cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds. This small change in oxygen content was the only change observed in coal structure during the biosolubilization process. Many coal solubilizing microorganisms have been isolated. Some are lignin degrading organisms such as Phanerochaete chrysosporium and various Streptomyces species (Gupta, et. al., 1988; Wilson, et. al., 1987). This was not unexpected since the structures of lignin and low-rank coals are similar. These organisms produce an enzyme complex, ligninase, that utilizes hydrogen peroxide to oxidatively cleave the bond between a and ß carbons of an aliphatic chain bound to an aromatic nucleus. Another important organism is Trametes versacolor (syn. Coriolus versacolor, Polyporus versacolor). Even though this organism produces a ligninase (Dodson, et.al., 1987), coal solubilization has been attributed to the enzyme laccase (Pyne, et. al., 1987). Laccase utilizes molecular oxygen to oxidatively cleave a - ß bonds using a mechanism similar to that observed for ligninases (Kawai, et. al., 1988). Other coal solubilizing microorganisms have been isolated from coal outcrops (Ward, 1985; Ward, 1988), but enzyme activities responsible for coal solubilization have not been identified. "Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of an open-pit mine has several challenges. A good quality mesh of the model domain is a pre-requisite for convergence in solution. Good quality tetrahedral meshing and insertion of prism layers in faceted open-pit mine geometry is complicated due to presence of numerous vertices and ridges. Presence of vertices and ridges result in poor quality tetra elements and holes in prism layers, which cause instability in the model. Good quality pit bottom prism mesh elements significantly improve the formation of velocity boundary layer and thermal boundary layer at the pit bottom. This results in an expected temperature dependent micrometeorological buoyancy flow in the pit. Whereas, model geometry without a prism layer, results in abrupt temperature gradient near pit bottom. Buoyancy flow and recirculation have significant effect in lifting mechanism of fugitive dust particles generated near pit bottom. Representative initial and boundary conditions and selection of appropriate turbulence model have significant influences on the simulation results. In this paper, three-dimensional models of open-pit mines are developed using commercial CFD software (CRADLE-CFD). Important constraints and various consequences in modeling complex open-pit geometries are presented. INTRODUCTION Application of Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model an open-pit mine to predict fugitive dust and pollutant concentrations in and around a mine is relatively new. In former Soviet republic (USSR), Baklanov [1] and Belousov [2, 3] presented numerical models of pollutant transport in open-pit mines in Arctic regions. In recent years, advances in mathematical and computational fields have enabled better modeling of pollutant dispersion phenomenon around mines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Several CFD software packages have been used by various researchers to model the pollutant transport in open-pit mines. Works by Alvarez et al. [4]; Lowndes et al. [5]; Silvester et al. [6]; Torno et al. [7]; Choudhury and Bandopadhyay [8]; Collingwood et al. [9]; Raj et al. [10] and Flores et al. [11]; are examples of application of various commercial and open source CFD packages (COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM) to model pollutant transport in open-pit mines. These researches provided a strong background for additional research involving CFD modeling of open-pit mines. Due to the limitations of computational times and capacity, 3D modeling and various aspects of fugitive dust dispersion in open-pit mines remained unexplored."

"The Riyadh Metro, commissioned by Arriyadh Development Authority “ADA” - the executive arm of The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh -, forms part of a new public transport-system of Saudi Arabia’s fast growing capital city. The Design & Build project consists of 176 km of Metro Line with 57 km of tunnels. Beyond the Design and Construction, an additional aim of the ADA is to introduce up-to-date methodologies and improve safety in construction projects. A systematic dilapidation survey of buildings and infrastructures was a prerequisite for designing the required instrumentation and monitoring tools. Site investigations required of existing methodologies and the use of geophysical methods for achieving reliable results. Large diameter TBM tunneling is challenging in hot weather conditions and karstic ground. The present paper shows how modern technologies for underground construction are introduced into the local industry and gives an outlook on future projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. INTRODUCTION Riyadh, the capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is a fast growing city with more than 5.7 million inhabitants. The growth of the city is linked to the recent history of the Kingdom, where some initial milestones from the 1950’s can be highlighted: Revenue generation from the exportation of oil from the Kingdom; downstream investment of oil revenue in the reconstruction and development of the Kingdom; a general plan for the settlement of the Bedouins; the provision of a public electricity network for the city; the opening of the Riyadh - Dammam railway corridor providing a link from the capital to the Eastern Region; the commissioning of Riyadh airport (converted to Riyadh airbase, after the opening of King Khalid International Airport in 1983); and the relocation of ministries and other central government agencies in 1955. In 1974, The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh was established as the organizational, planning, executive and coordinating body responsible for the development of Riyadh. Arriyadh Development Authority “ADA”, established in 1983 is the High Commission’s executive, technical and administrative arm. The ADA is responsible for implementing the High Commission's organizational, planning, executive and coordinating decisions and missions. The ADA’s president is a member of the High Commission (ADA 2015). One of the remits of the ADA is the preparation and execution of a transport plan for the city of Riyadh."

The use of the underground space has been a recurring issue in human history, whereas the reasons for building subsurface structures have changed over time. In the decades to come, the world will be marked by a variety of underground projects never before seen. This paper describes a series of characteristic challenges of designing and building underground freight transportation systems, with reference to the example of Cargo sous terrain, a privately funded underground logistics project in Switzerland. It provides an overview of contracting practices that allow these challenges to be addressed with success.

The International Tunneling Association (ITA) Working Group (WG) 22 “Information Modelling in Tunneling” has developed a guideline for the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) concepts for Bored Tunneling Projects. The guideline primarily covers the use of BIM during the conceptual and delivery phases of a project. It provides Owners with an introduction to BIM, an overview of the current capabilities of BIM, and a guide for implementation for a Bored Tunnel. The document will be officially published at the World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in Copenhagen in 2022. This paper describes the need for the guideline and provides a preview of its contents.

The Foothill Tunnel is a remote 16-mile-long untreated drinking water tunnel in the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Hetch Hetchy Water and Power (HHWP) system. The 14-foot horseshoe shaped tunnel, constructed in the 1920s, is lined intermittently with concrete over approximately 53% of its length, with the balance being unlined rock. After detailed planning, in January of 2020 Mott MacDonald and HHWP staff completed a visual inspection and documented the condition of the tunnel with electronic data collection, photographs, and video with audio recording. The result was a comprehensive condition assessment that identified key areas of the tunnel to monitor.

Cyclones installed in three closed- circuit grinding systems were changed from conventional, vertical mounting to horizontal mounting with a favorable improvement in classification efficiency. In two of the installations, apex plugging problems were eliminated because horizontal mounting permit- ted the use of much larger apex orifices. Marked reduction in circulating load was accompanied by greatly reduced maintenance requirements for the cyclone and the cyclone feed pump in one of the installations.

Particle shape characterization is a complex task made more difficult because of the human eye's sophisticated recognition of shapes, giving rise to the assumption that shape analysis is considered a simple problem. Further exacerbating the problem is the question of whether particles have a general shape. Old and new shape measuring techniques are discussed, particularly the new image analysis methods techniques such as Fourier, Haar, Walsh and Delta. Problems with the current image analysis equipment and future research equipment needs are presented.
