Discussion by Erich U. Petersen Harbuck et al. (1990) present results of research on sulfuric acid leaching of a germanium-gallium ore and shed considerable insight on possible extraction methods for gallium and germanium. However, the presentation does not give sufficient details to evaluate the research, so some of the conclusions may not be as applicable as stated. The objective of this communication is to indicate that relevant and easily obtainable geological and technical information was omitted. Consequently, on this basis, alternative explanations for some of the data are possible. Discussed below are the omission of: • pertinent geological, mineralogical and geochemical literature; • details regarding the determination of germanium concentration in quartz by electron microprobe; and • details on the calculation of the amount of germanium locked in quartz. "These topics are important since the determination of the amount and locus of "unrecoverable, locked germanium" may have an important impact on the economics and methods of germanium extraction and the directions of future research. Harbuck et al. state that "A key to increasing germanium extraction is understanding the mineralogy of the ore." Water from underground uranium mines located in the Ambrosia Lake district near Grants, New Mexico, U.S.A., is treated to reduce levels of uranium, selenium, radium and molybdenum. The treatment system consists of a series of ponds and an ion exchange plant. Bacterial and algal populations present in the pond system are considered agents which actively assist in removal of the pollutants present in the water. Pondbottom sediments maintain a reducing zone and a large population of sulfate-reducing bacteria of the genera [Desulfovibrio] and [Desulfotomaculum]. Uranium, molybdenum, and selenium accumulate in the pond sediment. Stimulation of the microbial sulfate-reducing activity resulted in a decrease of soluble concentrations of these elements in laboratory systems. Predominant components of the treatment ponds’ algal flora are the filamentous [Spirogyra] and benthic [Chara]. Laboratory study indicates that [Spirogyra] is more active than [Chara] in removal of uranium and molybdenum from solution. However field-collected algal samples of both of the genera contain uranium and molybdenum. Laboratory studies indicate that death and decay of the algae in association with pond sediment does not result in return of cellbound uranium and molybdenum to the water. The algae appear to act as bio-filters for accumulation of particulate pollutants and agents for adsorption and/or absorption of soluble pollutants.

As a result of several recent methane/dust ignitions in surface auger and highwall mines, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of methane gas at these operations. Three mine sites were visited in western Kentucky and one in western Pennsylvania to collect run-of-mine coal samples for gas content determination using the modified-direct-method (MOM). Results indicate the samples emitted small quantities of methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Either methane or nitrogen was the predominant gas released. The same gases were released after crushing the samples for residual gas content; however, nitrogen was the primary component of this fraction. Total ~as contents ranged from less than 0.01 cm /g to 0.54 cm3/g. The hydrocarbon gases probably originated during coalification. Other gases may have originated partially as a byproduct of coalification and partially as a result of other, near-surface processes. The data suggest that although methane quantities are small, desorption could occur at near surface conditions prior to mining. The desorbed methane could accumulate as a free gas in fractures in the coal bed or roof rock. When these fractures are penetrated by the auger, methane could rapidly enter the whole atmosphere possibly creating explosive conditions.

Methods of measuring in situ rock thermo-physical properties are rapidly evolving. Among those existing in the literature, a particular measurement procedure was selected for further development. The measurement is based on creating a spherical temperature field in a drill hole using a point source heater of constant heat flux. The bivariate temperature distribution 0 (r, t) is measured at several points along the length of the drillhole, radius r from the heater and at particular time intervals (t). A number of different evaluation methods were tested for calculating the unknown thermal conductivity (k) and diffusivity [] from the measured temperature and the known heat flux. The results showed that evaluation using the finite difference scheme and small temperature differences measured at points close together, cannot give a reasonable result. In order to solve the problem a new general analytical evaluation method is developed. Using an appropriate technique, it is possible to simultaneously obtain values for k and [], incorporating a semi least square technique to reduce the uncertainty in the evaluation. The new device and evaluation method makes it possible to obtain from a single drill hole highly precise k and [] values within an 8 hour period. The method has been used in several underground mines in the U.S. with good results.

A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high loss-of-ignition (LOI)fly ash. Using froth flotation to achieve selective separations requires long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash — low LOI ash and a high-carbon product suit-able for reburning or further upgrading.

Public domain ventilation simulation programs have been well accepted by the mining engineers, but preparing the input and interpreting the results are labor intensive tasks. High performance personal computers and versatile CAD packages provide the means to quickly create the network and display the results. The enhanced simulators work from computerized as-mined map, the projected mine layout and timing maps. Using on screen displays of these maps and the snap-on feature of AutoCAD, the planner designates nodes in the ventilation network, connects them into branches and selects the branch characteristics from a side bar menu. The color coded ventilation network appears with the parameters shown along each branch. The software then calculates the length of airways and computes the branch resistances where needed and converts the input into the required format and passes the data to the Pennsylvania State University or U.S. Bureau of Mines ventilation programs. Output is available in graphical as well as report format. The color coded graphs include pressures at the nodes and flow quantities on the branches. Since the networks come from the mine maps, the ventilation displays are to scale and can be plotted separately or superimposed on the mine maps.

In 1975 bituminous coal and lignite production in the United States reached an all-time high of 637 million tons, an increase of 6 percent over production in 1974. The output, valued at $11.9 billion f.o.b. mines, was produced at 5,100 mines in 24 states (6). Coal mining is the largest mining industry in Alabama. Production from Alabama's mines in 1975 was over 21 million tons, and present projections forecast a steady increase in production, with tonnages almost doubling by 1985 (5). Of the total quantity of coal produced, about 16 million tons were consumed in electric power generation and the remainder was used for metallurgical coke production, extraction of chemicals and petroleum based products, and power for industry. The fact that 75 percent of Alabama's power is generated by burning coal attests to the importance of this fossil fuel to the State. Approximately 14 million tons of coal were produced by strip-mining methods in Alabama during 1975 and about 7 million tons were produced by underground mining during the same period. Surface mining is expected to continue at about 14 million tons per year, but by 1980 underground coal mining is expected to increase to about 25 million tons (3). About 7 million tons of surface-mined coal in Alabama is subjected to some means of washing or cleaning. The methods used are screening accompanied by heavy media separation, jigging, tabling and flotation. Some of the simpler approaches employ screening and jigging, or tabling. Except where flotation is used, the screen undersize fraction (finer than 0.25 inch) is rejected, with the result that 10 to 15 percent of the coal is lost. Thus, in the State of Alabama an aggregate of about 1 million tons of coal is wasted annually in the fines which are impounded from treatment of surface-mined coal. The use of the Humphreys spiral to concentrate fine coal was practiced as early as 1947. At that time the Hudson Coal Company (1) used Humphreys spirals to concentrate anthracite fines. With some exceptions, minerals may be acquired on the unappropriated public lands by one of three methods: (1) mining claim location under the General Mining Law of 1872; (2) mineral lease under the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920; and (3) sale contract under the Mineral Materials Act of 1947. Leasable minerals such as oil, gas, coal and phosphate are specifically designated as leasable in the Mineral Leasing Act so the method of acquisition is clear. As a general rule, metallic minerals are acquired by mining claim location. However the nonmetallic minerals, most of which are industrial minerals or gemstones, present a more difficult problem. These minerals are acquired either by mining claim or a sale contract depending on their chemical composition, physical properties and the use to which they are put. The Act of July 23, 1955 (30 U.S.C. 61 1) provided that uncommon varieties of sand, stone, gravel, pumice, pumicite or cinders are locatable; whereas, common varieties of such minerals may only be acquired by a contract of sale. The widespread location of mining claims to appropriate such deposits has caused many land management problems. Federal court and Interior decisions offer the most useful guidelines in determining the most appropriate method of acquisition.

Hydrometallurgy has a well-known and established role in the production of manganese metal (1) and manganese compounds, including battery grade manganese dioxide (2). Also, several leaching processes have been developed and applied at various times for the recovery of manganese from low grade ores (3). Recently, interest in the hydrometallurgy of manganese has been stimulated by the problems presented in the processing of sea nodules (4). Fumes and dusts from the ferro-manganese furnaces also offer a potential field for the application of manganese leaching techniques (5). In treating low grade manganese ores a major requirement of the leaching process is that it should dissolve manganese from a mixture of manganese and iron oxides. The most selective reagent for this purpose is ammonium carbamate applied after preliminary pyrometallurgical reduction of the ore (6). Since soluble carbamate complexes of the postulated type (7) are formed by both manganous and ferrous, but by neither manganic nor ferric, ions, selectivety of manganese leaching is achieved by control of the reduction operation to yield, essentially MnO and Fe304? A potential improvement to this two step process would be to simultaneously reduce and selectively leach the manganese in one hydrometallurgical operation. This paper presents an outline of several models that have been developed to aid surface mine planners evaluate alternative mining methods and dragline sizes. The models presented belong to a larger group of models that are incorporated in the SEAMPLAN computerized mine and reclamation planning system. SEAMPLAN was developed in the College of Engineering at Montana State University. Initial funding for the development was derived from the USDA Forest Ser- vice and EPA. Enhancements to SEAMPLAN are currently being funded by DOE (Contract DE-AC22-80ET-14173). SEAMPLAN is a comprehensive surface mine and reclamation planning tool that contains a number of major modules: Data Entry and Review, Production Analysis, Reclamation Analysis, and Impact Analysis. The Production Analysis Module contains programs that enable the user to evaluate alternative methods of removing overburden in a surface coal mine and then to assess auxiliary activities required to support the overburden removal operation. A set of these programs addresses the use of draglines for removing overburden. Six basic dragline mining techniques have been modeled. For one-pass dragline operations four methods can be analyzed: (i) simple side cast, (ii) side bench, (iii) extended bench, and (iv) extended bench with side bench. Two methods of two-pass operations are modeled: (i) single dragline, and (ii) tandem draglines.

Under a Section 319 Water Quality grant from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, a working group of government agencies, mining industry representatives, and University of Alaska researchers undertook reclamation of an abandoned mine site on Birch Creek, near mile 101 of the Steese Highway. Stream hydrology, water quality, and the extent and nature of natural revegetation, were measured before the site was then recontoured to decrease the bedload deposition and bank erosion of the streams. Methods for stabilization of streams and rivers appear to have much in common with those for locations further south, but are subject to complications unique to the North, such as the formation of aufeiss, and to a lack of accurate climatological data. Natural revegetation appears to be possible for most northern placer mine sites. However, it may take place more slowly than required by public perception. Preliminary data indicate a surprising lack of nutrients in the floodplains of mined areas. Natural revegetation may be enhanced by selective planting of grasses and willows, which will contribute variously to soil quality, bank stabilization, and short-term appearance. Monitoring of hydrologic and water quality data, and of natural and artificially placed vegetation will continue at the .Birch Creek site through the summer of 1995,

In June 1997, Mount Polley Mining Corp., a division of Imperial Metals Corp., completed an 18-kt/d (20,000 stpd) gold-copper mine in central British Columbia. Fast-track construction and extensive off-site construction were combined with an aggressive project schedule to build the mine in one year. This was three months ahead of schedule and 7% below the original budgeted cost of C$123.5 million (US$86 million). The Mount Polley Mine was the first of a crop of new open-pit mines in British Columbia. The Mount Polley deposit has been explored since the mid-1960s when it was known as the Cariboo Bell property. From 1988, Imperial Metals completed drilling and metallurgical testing on the deposit. This led to a positive feasibility study and the issuing of a Mine Development Certificate in 1991. The project was later shelved due to falling metals prices and the strength of the Canadian dollar. In late 1994, Imperial merged with Bethlehem Resources Corp., bringing a strong project team to the company. The deposit was then re-evaluated, ore reserves revised and additional metallurgical testing was performed. The result was a revised project plan. It indi¬cated that a financially feasible gold-copper mining op¬eration could be constructed at Mount Polley operat¬ing at 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). In May 1996, an agreement was reached with Sumitomo to jointly fund and develop the project. By early 1996, final plans and permits were being prepared for construction, scheduled to begin in June 1.996. On-site work commenced on May 28th, 1996 following lifting of the road restrictions. Mount Polley Mining acted as its own project manager. Construction was completed in June 1997. Plant runup took place in July and full production began in August. Through the use of off-site construction and the careful selection of contractors who cooperated to complete some 12 major contracts, it was possible to reduce the mine and mill construction time from 16 to 13 months. Off-site construction for all possible aspects of the work and the use of used milling equipment allowed significant savings in overall capital costs of construction. Total costs for the mine, mill and tailings dam equated to C$6,100/t/d of throughput. The mill design incorporates several innovative features that will aid maintenance and allow flexibility of operation. The operation is designed as a closed system and meets the latest environmental standards. Concentrate is shipped by truck to the port of Vancouver. Revenues for the mine come from the mine's production of about 3.1 t/a (100,000 oz/year) of gold and 10.8 kt/a (24 million lbs/year) of copper during the first four years of the 12-year mine life.

INTRODUCTION The process of mining removes valuable and eco¬nomically recoverable minerals from the earth. In the case of hard-rock mining, this process involves breaking and removing ore, while leaving the waste rock or host rock as intact as possible. Prior to mining, ground stresses exist in the ore and the host rock as a result of weight and tectonic forces; for the purposes of this chapter, the ore is considered to support the host rock on both the hanging and footwall sides. Two basic phenomena accompany mining. First, the hanging walls and footwalls tend to move together as the ore is removed. Second, high stress gradients de¬velop in the rock periphery of the opening; the magni¬tudes of the stress gradients vary widely, depending upon the local geometry and conditions. At various times, mining methods have used square¬set timbers, waste-rock backfill, alluvial sand fill, and tailings backfill materials, with or without cement, to replace the loss of support caused by the removal of the ore. Cut-and-fill mining has evolved to use hydraulically placed tailings for the backfill. In the stope, this fill provides massive support to the walls, thereby reducing stresses in the back. It also provides a floor from which men and machines can work to drill and blast, to haul ore, and to scale and bolt the back. In many cases, the addition of cement provides a competent free-standing wall when the fill is exposed during mining of adjacent stopes or during pillar recovery operations. In most cases, the use of fill does not eliminate standard tem¬porary or local roof control measures such as roof bolts and wire mesh. Fill Characteristics It is important that backfill used for ground support be of maximum stiffness in relation to wall closure. The stiffness of the fill is related to its placement bulk density or void ratio. In the case of cemented tailings, this is enhanced by the cement bonds. During stope closure, individual fill particles experience rotation and crushing at point contacts, but they are subject to little relative translation. The stiffness approaches infinity as the void ratio approaches zero, until the ground forces reach equilibrium, and closure stops. The gradation of particle sizes and minimal segregation resulting from good hy¬draulic placement both contribute to a high degree of early stiffness in the closure history of classified tailings backfill. This also implies that the fill should be resistant to creeping under high static loads. All mines experience shock loading situations such as blasting, and many mines experience rock bursts that can apply sudden and very high loads to the fill. Certain conditions of void ratio, particle size, and moisture con¬tent can result in mass fluidization of unconsolidated fill during such shock loading. Two key factors in avoid¬ing fluid behavior are the provision of a well-drained fill through desliming or classification and the achievement of a small degree of consolidation through the addition of cement in ratios as lean as 40 to 1 (2.4% cement). The acceptance of classified mill tailings as backfill material has been enhanced by its relative economy, including its source, preparation, delivery, and stope distribution. Transportation from the backfill prepara¬tion plant on the surface into the stope usually can be accomplished with low power consumption, with low labor costs, with few capital costs, and at high tonnage rates. An additional benefit is a reduction of the storage volume required for surface disposal of the tailings stream, with a resultant improvement in the environ¬ment. The costs of placing cemented tailings backfill generally range from $1.65 to $6.61/t ($1.50 to $6.00 per st) of fill depending upon the cement ratio used. Scope This chapter examines a major backfill program at a mine and mill complex where the backfill facilities are included as a part of the original planning. The backfill preparation plant is intended to make maximum use of remote controls and automation. The logistics asso¬ciated with material storage, handling, and metering in the plant are outlined. Important considerations in specifying equipment for typical service conditions are discussed. The fill delivery system is described, includ¬ing the boreholes, level lines, and stope distribution lines. Stope preparations for fill confinement and drain¬age are described, as are the techniques of placement and distribution. Methods of controlling and directing the flow of drainage water and slimes are presented, along with the facilities and equipment for clarification, pumping, and sludge removal. As shown in Fig. 1, the fill program encompasses most aspects of the mining and refining facilities, so the discussion is brief in each area. The preparation of backfill of a uniform and con¬trollable quality is presented here as a material handling problem. The balance of the presentation concentrates on the logic of the system, the costs where meaningful (in 1977 US $ unless otherwise specified), and some operating "tricks" that have contributed to system per¬formance and reliability. SURFACE PREPARATION PLANT A backfill preparation plant is required on the surface. This plant generates suitable fill material from the stream of mill tailings. Among the functions of the plant are: 1) Slimes are removed to improve the percolation characteristics of the fill; typically, particles finer than 325 mesh are removed from the tailings. 2) Tailings and sand storages are provided so that the steady stream of tailings produced by the mill can be accepted. Provision is made to accommodate the cyclic high-volume demand from the mine. 3) The plant stores the cement and contains meter¬ing and mixing facilities to provide fill of a controllable and uniform quality. 4) The hydraulic backfill delivery system is a part

A mathematical model of the industrial hydrocyclone based on fluid dynamics is a better alternative to the currently existing empirical models. The swirling-flow velocities are determined by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with an appropriate turbulence model. The solution of the momentum-balance equations yields the flow field inside the hydrocyclone which determines the particle trajectories, and subsequently the classification curve. The essence of the model is that the physical dimensions of the hydrocyclone and the slurry characteristics can be incorporated, and the influence of these parameters reflects on the flow predictions. The predicted tangential and axial velocities in a 250-mm hydrocyclone are in good agreement with the laser-Doppler velocimetry measurements. Finally, the predicted classification curves show good agreement with experimental data measured on a KREBS Dl0B hydrocyclone.

This study examined the potential of mixing rotary kiln fines (RK fines), a waste product generated when limestone is converted to lime (CaO), with acid producing mine waste to provide 1) short-term mitigation by neutralizing acid produced by iron sulfide oxidation and 2) long-term mitigation by facilitating the passivation of iron sulfide mineral surfaces. Five loadings of RK fines were mixed with 75 g of Duluth Complex rock to produce neutralization potential (NP) added: acid potential (AP) quotients of 0,0.11,0.22,0.66 and 1.1. The mixtures were subjected to wet-dry cycling laboratory testing for 585 weeks. The rock alone produced acidic drainage, with pH decreasing below 4 after about 20 weeks of reaction and ultimately reaching the approximate range of 3.3 to 3.5; sulfate release did not decrease over time. The RK fines elevated pH and inhibited sulfate release for time periods which increased with the mass of RK fines present. The pH of drainage from the 0.11 quotient (NP added1AP) loading decreased below 6.0 after 75 weeks of dissolution and decreased to 3.6 after 117 weeks, at which time the reactor was terminated. The duplicate 0.22 quotient loadings of RK fines decreased below 6.0 after 95 and 170 weeks. The former was terminated after 117 weeks, and the latter reached a minimum pH of 2.8 after 512 weeks. Drainage pH from the 0.66 quotient decreased below 6 after 581 weeks. For the drainages which acidified, the cumulative calcium release prior to pH decreasing below 6.0 was 92 to 103 percent of that initially present as calcium carbonateloxide in the RK fines. The pH of drainage from the 1.1 quotient typically remained above 8.0 throughout the period of record. Sulfate concentrations in the drainages decreased while the neutralizing fraction of the RK fines was present, but increased after this fraction was depleted.

Glass is one of man's most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860's resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer's economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material's potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.

Increasing transportation costs, clean air regulations and the decreasing availability of landfill space are factors in the increased interest in the utilization of low cost disposal sites for coal combustion residues (CCR). Inactive surface and underground coal mines can satisfy the conditions for stable CCR disposal sites, and subsurface CCR injection can be beneficial in reducing the amount of acid mine drainage (AMD) often produced at such sites. The material is expected to add alkalinity to the subsurface environment and to decrease the permeability and porosity of the buried spoil. Both mechanisms can reduce the amount of acid normally generated at a mine site. The Bureau of Mines is cooperating with an independent coal company in a test of subsurface injection of a mixture of fly ash, from conventional power plants or from fluidized bed combustion (FBC) , with AMD sludge into a reclaimed surface mine. Changes in water quality parameters and the concentration of heavy metals in water samples from wells and seeps are being used to assess the effect of CCR injection. The preliminary results discussed here indicate that improvement in subsurface water quality was related to fly ash injection and that components of the fly ash were stable in the acid environment.

INTRODUCTION The rock mechanics study of the shortwall mining system at Beth-Elkhorn corporation's Hendrix No. 22 Mine is being conducted under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The objective of the study is to obtain data on surface subsidence over a portion of the mined area, strata subsidence in the mined area, and underground stress changes and displacements in and near natural support elements of the mining system. This study is currently in progress, and only a portion of the results are being presented at this time. The Hendrix No. 22 Mine is located in the moderately rough mountainous terrain of Letcher County in eastern Kentucky. The nearest mine workings to the shortwall area are approximately 1,900 feet distant. The depth of cover over the mined shortwall area varies from 770 feet at Panel 1 to 170 feet at Panel 5 (Figure 1). The strata in the shortwall area is summarized in the three core logs shown in Figure 2. Hole no. 2 is located in approximately the center of the mined shortwall area (Panel 3, Line C, Figure 1). The coal seam in the shortwall area is approximately 4 feet thick and horizontal, although one major ‘roll’ intersects all panels.
