Kaolin is a hydrated aluminum silicate mined primarily in middle Georgia along the "fall line", the location of the coast line in prehistoric times. It is used extensively as a filler for paper, insecticides, tires, plastics, a pigment for paints, as a coating for fine gloss paper, and for high grade ceramic products, such as catalytic converters. During its journey from the open pit mine to its final use, kaolin takes many forms, and must be handled in many different ways. The purpose of this presentation is to follow kaolin through its process and briefly describe some of the methods Georgia Kaolin Company, one of the world's largest kaolin producers, uses to handle and convey its product and some of the peculiarities involved.

Numerous reactor designs for biological sulfate reduction have been reported. Fluidized-bed bioreactors (FBR) can efficiently retain biomass and allow high mass transfer and reaction rates. This work reviews the development of various sulfate-reducing FBR processes for treating acidic metal- and sulfate-containing waters and recovering metals from bioleaching liquors. The FBR process performance was evaluated with continuous flow experiments under various operational conditions: fluidization rates, influent pH values, metal, sulfate and salt concentrations, hydraulic retention times, electron and carbon sources, and temperatures. Substrate utilization and sulfide inhibition kinetics were determined with batch FBR-kinetic experiments. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was used to predict the performance of the FBR. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were characterized in FBRs with molecular and culture-based approaches with the aim to gain a better understating of the bioprocesses. Based on the studies, FBRs are well suited for the combined removal of metals, acidity and sulfate from water.

In recent years, the need has become more and more accute for a high capacity, high intensity, wet magnetic separator for the concentration of finely ground, paramagnetic minerals. As a result of this increased interest, extensive test work has been conducted at our Central Test Laboratory, and the basic design for such a separator has been established. Three units have been developed to comprise a full line of this equipment: (a) Series 4L (laboratory), Figure I, is manually operated to permit maximum flexibility and precise control of each variable, with a capacity of 4 gallons per minute. (b) Series LOCC, Figure II, functions by automatically controlled feeding and washing cycles, and has a capacity of approximately 1.0 tons per hour. (c) Series 200CF, Figure III, basically consists of an annular pole box, rotating through the high intensity magnetic field. This unit has a capacity of approximately 20 tons per hour.

In previous reports by Hausel et. al., (1979 a, b, and c), Leighton and McCallum (1979), and McCallum (1974;1979), several exploration procedures were examined as to their effectiveness in locating kimberlite intrusives in northern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming, where approximately 90 kimberlites have been recognized within 5 districts (Figure I). Briefly, geological mapping and stream sediment sampling for indic- ative heavy minerals of kimberlite (pyrope garnet, chrome diopside, and magnesian ilmenite) proved to be the two most effective methods in isolating kimberlite occurrences within the granitic terrain of Colorado and Wyoming (Hausel et. al., 1979 a, b, and c; Leighton and McCallum, 1979). Where a kimberlite intrusive is deeply weathered, remote sensing using color and color infrared aerial photography may be a potential reconnaissance tool in kimberlite exploration. The kimberlitic eluvium supports thicker grassy vegetation, and at least one species of grass (the Bluebunch Wheatgrass) is found to grow only within the eluvium. The result is that vegetation in the kimberlitic eluvium is a better infrared reflector than the vegetation in the surrounding granitic soils (Hausel et. al., 1979 b; McCallum, 1974

The block cave mining method poses unique ventilation challenges compared to other underground metal mining methods. This research study focuses on assessing the airflow behavior in regulated airflow distribution systems by developing a 1:100 scaled block cave experimental model and a numerical model. This study also investigated gas flow behavior under various airflow conditions. Based on our findings, we observed that reduction in particle size and porosity of caved materials, decrease in cave footprint, and closure of undercut drifts would increase cave airflow resistance. The increased airflow is found to be beneficial for gas dilution regardless of its source locations, while the regulated airflow distribution system might deteriorate the gas dilution situation when the source is located in the extraction drifts.

INTRODUCTION The air flow in the mine ventilation network can be categorized in three ways: natural splitting, controlled splitting, and semi-controlled splitting. In natural splitting, the air flow in branches of a ventilation network apportions itself according to the aerodynamic resistance of the branches. In controlled splitting, a prescribed quantity of air is circulated through each branch. In semi-controlled splitting, flow in some branches is fixed to a desired quantity while in other branches it is split naturally. In practice, the mine ventilation networks present the latter two situations. Usually, the resistance of each branch in the network is known and the quantity of air in the working place is predetermined by safety considerations. If the number of branches whose airflow quantities are known is equal to or larger than the number of the fundamental meshes in the network, then the network becomes a controlled splitting network (Wang, 1982 a). Otherwise, it is a semi-controlled splitting network. If no booster fans are used in the network, the problem can be solved as either controlled or semi-controlled splitting networks in order to determine the main fan pressure and regulator size and location. All techniques are based on Kirchoff's flow and energy conservation laws and Atkinson's Equation. Booster fans can be used in controlled and semi-controlled splitting networks. It has been proven both theoretically and practically that using booster fans in these ventilation systems can improve flow distribution and reduce consumption of power (McPherson et al., 1985). The current techniques used in determination of booster fan location and size include simulation, linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. These techniques can be classified into two groups. The first group, including linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing techniques, deals with controlled flow networks. The second, simulation, can be applied to the handling of semi-controlled flow networks. Mathematically, the problem of controlled splitting networks can be solved more easily than that of semi-controlled splitting networks. This is because the controlled flow network can be formulated as a linear programming problem, for the solution of which there are several sophisticated algorithms. Moreover, the semi-controlled flow network is usually modeled through nonlinear programming, for which there are no universally applicable solutions. The procedure described by Wu and Topuz, 1986, can be used to convert a semi-controlled network to a controlled flow network, and the problem can then be easily solved by the techniques used for solution of a controlled flow network problem. In practice, a mine ventilation network may change from controlled splitting to semicontrolled splitting with advancement of mining. This dynamic nature of mine ventilation makes the problem more complicated and necessitates development of new solution procedures which will consider the overall economics of the system. CONTROLLED SPLITTING NETWORK The problem in controlled splitting networks with booster fans is to determine the operational characteristic of the main fans, and the location and size of booster fans and regulators. The objective is to satisfy the air flow rate requirement for each branch while minimizing consumption of energy. The techniques used for the controlled splitting network problem include linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.

Reliable ore reserve estimates for deposits with highly skewed grade disributions are difficult tasks to perform. Although some recent geostatistical techniques are available to handle problems with these estimations, ordinary kriging or conventional interpolation methods are still widely used to estimate the ore reserves for such deposits. The estimation results can be very sensitive to the search parameters used during the interpolation of grades with these methods. This paper compares the ore reserve estimates from ordinary kriging using several cases in which certain search parameters are varied. The comparisons are extended to different mineralizations to show the changing effects of these parameters.

Of the 15 million tons of glass discarded in municipal wastes annually, about 2 million tons pass through incinerators and can be recovered by ore processing techniques. Although the primary use for this recovered waste glass would be as cullet in the manufacture of new glass containers, this approach is not always practical because of long shipping distances, high freight costs, and high purity requirements. Alternatives to the use of waste glass as cullet would be either as landfill or in secondary products. Although glass is considered a good landfill material, it is still wasteful of potentially valuable raw materials. Secondary products that can be made from waste glass1 include a variety of industrial and construction items. As part of the Bureau of Mines' program in secondary materials recovery, the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Laboratory has conducted research concerned with the development of ceramic building products from waste glass. Materials employed in this research were obtained from municipal incinerator residues fractionated in the Bureau's continuous residue processing plant, College Park Metallurgy Research center.' The studies reported herein3,4 present research results using waste glass in the formulation and production of clay bricks, not only to produce improved products, but to reduce production costs, conserve natural raw materials, and most important, to reduce manufacturing energy requirements.

The process of selecting a building site for a major structure is a complex procedure involving the consideration of a multitude of factors. The approximate geographic location for a structure is usually fixed by its intended function, though often there may be several site alternatives. Socio-economic, logistic, marketing and political factors are the primary site determinants. Also critical in site planning, however, are the environmental factors, both natural and man-made. These factors will influence the precise siting location within the limits allowed by the primary determinants and will dictate some of the basic design criteria. This paper discusses environmental factors, principally those which are natural conditions, that must be analyzed for five different groups of structures. The importance of thorough site environmental analysis based upon the principles of applied earth science is described. Significant elements to be considered in an appraisal of the geology, hydrology, seismology and meteorology are outlined.

Non-ferrous smelting industry in Japan often had the severe problems about the over production of sulfuric acid. There has been such a closed relation between amount of sulfuric acid from non-ferrous smelting industry and the products of copper, zinc and lead metals that the production of one ton of copper accompanies three tons of H2S04. When the proper balance exists in both markets this situation certainly brings bigger profits. In Xining and Metallurgical Institute of Japan the research commitee concerned with the fixation process of sulfur in non-ferrous smelting industry was established in 1977 and continued the activity for four years untill 1981. This paper will introduce some of the activities involved in the report published by the committee.

This discussion deals with the geology o£ the Tennessee-Kentucky ball clay deposits; their mineralogy and chemistry; methods of finding, mining and refining; and makes observations on reserves of and future prospects for these clays. Ball clays appear in ceramic formulas for manufacture of vitreous china sanitary-ware, electrical porcelains, floor and wall tile, dinnerware and artwares(l). This type of clay is used for refractory (2) and abrasive products(3), and as a suspending agent for ceramic glazes(4), engobes(5) and porcelain enamel slips(6). Although some ball clay is imported, probably 85-90 percent of ball clay used in the USA(7) is obtained from deposits in Weakley, Henry and Carroll Counties in Tennessee(8), and in adjacent Graves County, Kentucky(9). The term "ball", as applied to clay, probably derives from former mining practice in England whereby conveniently-sized blocks of clay were cut from moist clay beds by spading(10), The expression "ball" has no other technological significance. ASTM(11) defines ball clay as "a secondary clay, commonly characterized by the presence of organic matter, high plasticity, high dry strength, long vitrification range, and a light color when fired." This, and similar(12) definitions, applies to English ball clays but is not satisfactory for many American ball clays. Geology of the Tennessee-Kentucky Ball Clay Deposits Figure 1 shows that most commercial clay areas of the eastern United States lie near the edge of the Coastal Plain; a skew-shaped configuration of its landward boundary outlines the Mississippi Embayment(13), Near the apex of this basin a broad plain, with a rolling, Bullied topography(14), dips gently westward from the Tennessee River to bluffs at the edge of the Mississippi River flood plain.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted field investigations on six different types of bleeder systems used to ventilate areas mined by room and pillar methods. This paper discusses investigations that were conducted at mines using four of these systems.

During 1995, the estimated consumption of lithium minerals in the western world was 139 kt (153,000 st).This amounted to 18 kt (20,000 st) of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). Overall tonnage demand for lithium minerals increased by 10.8 kt (11,900 st) during 1995from 1994. From 1992 to 1995, overall tonnage demand has increased 62%, from 85.5 to 139 kt (94,240 st). There are four major producers of lithium minerals. Gwalia Consolidated in Western Australia is the largest producer of spodumene. It supplies high-grade spodumene concentrate, fine-spodumene concentrate, glass-grade spodumene and chemical-grade spodumene.Tantalum Mining (Tanco) of Manitoba, Canada, produces high-grade spodumene concentrate, fine-spodumene, concentrate and montebrasite. Bikita Minerals in Zimbabwe is the largest manufacturer of petalite. It supplies high-grade and container-glass petalite.

The availability of a fluid whose gross behavior sharply changes in a magnetic field without affecting its rheologic characteristics has been recently demonstrated. A colloidal solution of a ferrimagnetic material, such as magnetite, in a liquid that is immiscible with and lighter than water is projected for use in selective separation of particles according to their density spectrum in a continuous fashion. Magnetic levitation forces were created as an antigravity field when the fluid was properly placed in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. Five spherical non¬magnetic objects with densities ranging from 2.70 to 11.35 gram cm ' were made to float or submerge at will in a 0.96-gram cm-3 density fluid placed at vertical magnetic field gradients ranging from 0.2 to I kilooersted cm-1. The magnetic levitation farce in dyne cm-3 was found to vary linearly as a function of the object-fluid density mismatch with a slope equal to one g, the acceleration due to gravity.

Fuzzy logic and neural networks are new technologies being applied in many areas of engineering and business. While it is not always clear which kinds of problems are best suited to these technologies, and which problems are best approached with more standard methodologies, both fuzzy logic and neural networks appear to show great promise in the field of control systems. This paper demonstrates two advantages that these technologies offer: Easy controller design in the absence of a mathematical model of the plant to be controlled, and adaptive control capable of quickly responding to changes in the plant.

One of the major problems for us in the earthmoving industry is the analysis of materials under the ground surface. Countless engineering and construction jobs would be simplified if there were an inexpensive and fast way to obtain information on problems such as: Depth and solidith of bedrock? Nature of the materials between bedrock and the surface? Adequate foundation for bridges and drainage structures? Location of supplies of materials to be used in construction? Investigation of tunnel sites? Characteristics of swampy areas and investigation of existing and potential slide areas? These questions are of paramount interest to highway contractors as they bid jobs and plan, equipment spreads to handle them at optimum efficiency. Such information also is invaluable to engineers in the design and construction of bridges, buildings, railroads, canals, and tunnels.

Liberation of valuable minerals from a gangue matrix during size reduction of multiphase mineral particles is an important objective in mineral separation processes. A methodology for the prediction of volumetric grade distribution from one dimensional, linear intercept image analysis is being developed using a transformation function to describe the relations hi p between the linear and volumetric grade distributions. As part of this research effort it has been found that a transformation function, derived from Monte Carlo simulations of irregularly shaped particles, mainly depends on the volumetric grade and the dispersion density, i.e., the number of nuclei (or grains) per particle. A possible mathematical form for the transformation function is described in detail.

When Caterpillar announced that it had purchased Bucyrus for $8.8 billion, it was billed as the next great chapter in the history of mining. Surely, when the history books are written, it will be remembered as a deal that changed the face of the mining equipment sector, and it could well be a major milestone in the path toward autonomous mining in the future. In the short term, the deal is a clear indication that the world?s largest equipment maker is bullish on the mining sector. The purchase of Bucyrus allows Caterpillar to expand its mining interest to six product segments (underground, surface extraction, large mining trucks, surface material handling, hauling products and growth markets) with 16 product lines to serve the mining industry. But the commitment doesn?t end there. According to Steve Wunning, president of Caterpillar?s resource industries group, which includes Cat?s global mining division, the commitment to mining goes far beyond the acquisition of Bucyrus.
