The 1972 discovery of the Howards Pass lead-zinc deposit was the product of systematic regional geochemical surveys used to evaluate conceptual geological models for the metal-rich black shales of the Selwyn Basin. Motivation of personnel involved in all aspects of work was as critical a factor to the success as the existing corporate attitudes and infrastructure. Exploration programs were flexible but maintained a focus only on targets of sufficient economic potential to support operations in remote locations. Direct costs for the programs that lead to the discovery were in the order of $500,000 (Canadian 1972). Geological reserves today stand at over 500 Mt (511 million st) of 7% combined lead-zinc, containing a higher grade zone of nearly 10 Mt (11 million st) of 16% combined lead-zinc.

For tunnels with low overburden, the shotcrete lining is the main element of ground support, which is why shotcrete behavior is of prime importance. Following its application, shotcrete not only gains strength and stiffness with time but—if loaded at an early stage—it is also subject to creep which in turn leads to stress relaxation. For two-dimensional FE calculations, a computational modulus of elasticity of shotcrete is to be used. Based on parameter studies it was found that the modulus of elasticity of shotcrete depends on both shotcrete mix and ground behavior. While the Young’s Modulus used for young shotcrete may range from 1,000 to 7,000 MPa, the Young’s Modulus used for hardened shotcrete is best represented by a value of 15,000 MPa.

Expanded markets for copper in the past few years and a consequent search for new ore bodies have revitalized the widely known but seldom applied method of producing copper called heap leaching. This term should be differentiated from dump leaching in that the latter is applied to dumps of mixed oxide and sulfide ores (although either may predominate) that have been too low grade to beneficiate and have, therefore, been stripped off the higher grade underlying sulfide ores. Heap leaching is defined here as the process applied to oxide ores which have been mined solely for the purpose of leaching. In this case, all costs of mining the ore become a part (and a substantial one, as will be shown) of the cost of the copper produced, whereas in dump leaching the mining cost has already been accounted for as a stripping cost for the sulfide ore. Of course, with newly opened ore bodies, stripping costs may be divided through accounting procedures, between the copper produced by the mill and that obtained by leaching, but in general this type of operation must be economic on the basis of the sulfide ore alone. Heap leaching, as a beneficiation method, is unique in that it is the only process used for the recovery of a metal in which the time involved from mining the ore to metal production is measured in months instead of hours or at the most, days, Then too, after the ore body has been depleted and mining has ceased, metal production will continue for some substantial period of time. Heap leaching is also unique because unlike any other method of beneficiation, metal recovery cannot be accurately forecast ahead of time and recovery will never approach that of a conventionally milled sulfide ore or even that of a vat leached oxide ore. Counter-balancing this drawback, however, is the relatively low capital expenditure necessary to put a heap leaching operation into production and the consequence that smaller ore bodies which would not support the higher capital cost involved in a vat leaching plant can be made into producers. Stated more simply, in heap leaching the operator accepts low recovery in exchange for low capital costs and the break even point, that is, where the operator should go to vat leaching with its higher recovery and higher capital costs, is a matter of economics and also, to a great extent, a matter for the nature of the ore to decide. For instance, an ore that will vat leach in 7 to 10 days using 7 pounds of sulfuric acid per pound of copper produced might use double or triple that amount of acid during the months that are required for heap leaching.

To place the SME Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties (SME Valuation Standards) and International Mineral Property Valuation Standards template (IMVAL Template) within the global context of existing mineral valuation standards.2. To review the current status of harmonization of each International Mineral Valuation Committee (IMVAL) member’s mineral valuation standards (or code) with the IMVAL template and suggest remedies for issues found.3. To suggest future enhancements for the IMVAL Template and SME Valuation Standards, and to suggest future roles for the IMVAL and SME committees. From the author’s review, Ellis draws the following conclusions.The SME Valuation Standards comprise a minimum set of principles-based standards and guidelines for developing and reporting valuations of mineral properties (including petroleum properties) for public and private use, subject to jurisdictional requirements. The standards are also designed to provide mineral valuation guidance that supplements application of the International Valuation Standards Council’s International Valuation Standards (IVS) and the U.S. government endorsed Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), published by the Appraisal Foundation.The SME Valuation Standards is the first set of valuation standards developed by a minerals institute adopting and modifying the IMVAL template. As a result, the SME standards are essentially totally harmonized and otherwise aligned with the IMVAL template. IMVAL was initially conceived in 2012 as a discussion body to aid harmonization of each member’s valuation standards, by modifying to function the same. IMVAL primarily developed the IMVAL template, published in July 2016, to produce an agreed reference framework of essential mineral valuation guidance content as the goal for harmonization of the Australasian Code for Public Reporting of Technical Assessments and Valuations of Mineral Assets (VALMIN Code), The South African Code for the Reporting of Mineral Asset Valuation (SAMVAL) and the Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal standards and guidelines). The harmonization would result from each mineral valuation standards committee modifying its standards to operate similarly to the IMVAL template, producing valuation reports with similar content and value for the same mineral property. The template is also available for other bodies to adopt and modify for their regional setting’s needs, as SME did, or use as a convergence goal when updating an existing standard."

"Construction of underground structures in urban areas is a very challenging work. There are generally two methods of construction, an open cut-and-cover and underground method. To eliminate the subsurface and surface disturbance and street traffic problems, underground method is preferred. The stress redistribution caused by underground excavation induces movements and deformation in the earth mass and ultimately at the ground surface. This is more pronounced in large space excavations. Generally pre-supporting system is used to control ground deformation and thus enhance its stability. In this paper an innovative pre-supporting system is presented. Concrete Arch Pre-supporting System (CAPS) is introduced in Tehran Metro in 2002. This method has roots in construction method of an Old Iranian small water tunnels, called Quanat. CAPS is an efficient method for stabilizing large span underground spaces constructed in shallow and soft ground. In this technique underground reinforced concrete elements are constructed around the proposed underground space prior to main excavation. This method is used successfully in over 50 large span underground structures in Tehran Metro stations and road tunnel intersections. CAPS has potential to be used to pre-support the large span underground spaces at any weak ground condition in an urban area.1. INTRODUCTION Underground subway stations can be constructed either by open cut-and-cover or underground construction. Due to the presence of subsurface utilities and street traffics in urban areas, underground construction is preferred to eliminate relocation of the subsurface utilities, and other urban disturbance. Underground construction in an urban area is a very challenging effort. The complexity of the work is more pronounced in a weak and shallow ground. The stress redistribution caused by underground excavation induces deformations in the earth mass and ultimately at the ground surface causing damage to adjacent structures. The need to control ground surface settlements in urban area is widely recognized and new construction methods are continuously developed. Settlements induced by underground excavation may cause serious damages to nearby structures and subsurface underground utilities, (Sekimoto et. al. 2001). In order to improve stability of underground excavation and reduce settlements, various ground treatment techniques are presented, Johnson, et.al., (1983), Carrieri, et.al. (2002), and Ocak (2008)."

With the construction management team established and a full funding agreement secured the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) now has the manpower and the financial resources to continue Metrorail construction into the 1990's. This paper describes WMATA's new role as construction manager after the transition from Bechtel Associates and gaining the full funding agreement with the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) and regional governments to complete 84.7 Metrorail miles (136km). The authors review the most recent station and line tunneling projects. WMATA's contractors have employed the state of the art soft ground and hard rock tunneling equipment and methods - an earth pressure balance TBM, a closed face TBM, and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). In final, the paper previews future underground work to be let under the funding agreement.

Over the last many decades, a significant amount of research has gone into the domain of slurry transport. However, design engineers still face many challenges with respect to prediction of pressure drop, critical velocity and other design parameters as a function of Solids % and Particle Size Distribution (PSD). The industry requirement is to transfer the slurry at the maximum concentration as possible (above 30% (volume %)) to make slurry transport more economically viable and to reduce water consumption. To facilitate the design and scale-up of slurry transport in pipelines and in process plants, there is a need for a correlation that can predict slurry pressure drops over a wide range of operating conditions and physical properties of different slurries. The objective of this study is to overcome the limited range of applicability and validity of existing correlations and to develop a generalized but more rigorous correlation applicable to a wider range of slurry sys-tems. The existing Wasp et al. (1977) method is based on multi-phase flow modeling approach. This study attempts to modify this approach by considering material-specific values of Durand?s equation co-efficient and by defining flow regimes based on particle Reynolds number. When compared with experimental data, the modified Wasp method proposed in this study predicts the pressure drop for slurry flows more accurately than other available correlations. Also, the pro-posed method requires minimal test/experimental data for a particular slurry system and can be extended over different input conditions. An iterative computer algorithm is developed to calculate the criti-cal settling velocity and pressure drop in a pipe as a function of Solids % and PSD. The solution method can easily be implemented in de-signing slurry pipes, design validation, and studying the different slurry transport scenarios. The modified method can also be extended to accurately predict pressure drops in dynamic pressure flow networks used in commercial process simulators.

The production of ultrafine slurries and powders is possible with small media made out of Si02, A1203, Fe203, Zr03 or other raw materials due to the fact that since approximately 12 years from now, entirely new machines have been developed which allow to use this small media for the production of ultrafine pigments. Basically we distinguish between two grinding methods which are: A.) Dry Grinding with Air Classification: This method is used for more than fifty years but only since four years this technology is realized with small grinding media. Many problems like cooling, abrasion, control of the media flow, separation media from product, grinding media recycling etc. had to be resolved before it was possible to get in full production with this new system. Hereafter a flow-sheet of such a TRZK mill with an air classifier especially designed to produce end products with a top size between 2,5 and 3,0 micron and with an average particle size between 0,3 and 0,5 micron.

Molybdenum, the 42nd element in the periodic table, is now a very important metal in industry of the United States and the world. Chemically, it is a very complex element having valences of 0, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and can exist as a mixture of these valences in many compounds. It was discovered and separated by Scheele in 1778. At the present time, molybdenite is the only important commercial source of molybdenum. Molybdenum occurs in some 12-14 different recognized minerals, but practically all of the production is molybde¬nite. As late as 1915, it was considered a rare metal. Germany made extensive use of it during the first world war, which resulted in the establishment of a molybdenum industry in the United States at Cli¬max, Colo., in 1917. It was not until the mid-1920s when its introduc¬tion to steelmaking developed for the US automobile industry that the metal gained important acceptance. The first notable example was the Willis-Saint Claire automobile introduced in 1921 by C. Harold Willis, formerly chief metallurgist for Ford Motor Co. Molybdenum has also been produced in the US from wulfenite (PbMoO4) from Arizona and Nevada, and a small amount of molyb¬denite was produced up to the early 1970s as a coproduct from two molybdenum-bismuth mines in Quebec, Canada. The first byproduct production of molybdenite from a copper con¬centrating operation was achieved at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and was followed shortly by the Utah division of Kennecott Copper Co. in the mid-1930s. This section of the Handbook is divided into four main subdivi¬sions: Chapter 2, which deals with the concentration and recovery of molybdenite from primary molybdenum ores; Chapter 3, which deals with the recovery and separation of molybdenite as a byproduct from copper production; Chapter 4, which deals with the conversion practices employed for converting molybdenite to the oxide or metal form; and Chapter 5, which covers the uses of molybdenum in steel¬making, chemicals, pigments, lubrication, catalysts, etc. The Free World molybdenum production, for the past eight years from all sources, is shown in Table 1. 2. Primary Molybdenite Ores General In 1978 there were four primary molybdenite recovery plants in operation: Climax, Endako, Quests, and Henderson. For over half a century the Climax mine has been by far the largest and most important source of molybdenum in the world. During the early 1970s a few primary molybdenite mines in British Columbia were shut down due to adverse economical conditions. The largest of these was British Columbia Molybdenum, formerly owned by Kennecott Copper Corp. The Climax plant and operations are described in detail and the opera¬tions of the other plants are summarized following a general discussion of recovering molybdenite from primarily molybdenite ores. Recovery of molybdenite as a byproduct will be taken up in Chapter 3. Geology Molybdenite production from mines in which it is the sole or preponderantly important mineral is confined to ore bodies in granites or igneous-type rocks or pegmatite dikes. More than one state of mineralization is sometimes present as at Climax, York, Hardy, and Questa. In the case of Climax, important byproduct recovery of tung¬sten, tin, pyrite, and monazite is also attained. The molybdenite is commonly disseminated very finely in the siliceous granitic gangue but does occur in stringers and blebs in silicified mineral solution channels. Treatment of Primary Molybdenum Ores All primary molybdenum ores are low in molybdenite, the content ranging from less than 0.20% MoS2 to a high of about 0.40% MoS2. A high resistance to grinding is a common ore characteristic combined with a habit of very fine dissemination of molybdenite in the siliceous portion of the ore. Because of low MoS2 content, high hardness, and fine dissemination of molybdenite in primary ores, it has been necessary to develop a special mill treatment which yields an accepta¬ble recovery at a reasonably low milling cost. Essentially, the treatment consists of intensive rougher flotation at a relatively coarse grind with production of a low grade rougher froth containing a substantial percentage of the molybdenite in the form of low grade middling particles, followed with multistage regrinding to liberate the locked molybdenite and several stages of flotation cleaning to produce a finished grade concentrate. Rougher flotation on pulp ground to ap¬proximately 35 mesh is common practice, even if complete liberation of molybdenite from siliceous gangue may require regrinding to 200 mesh. The flotation of middling particles with a very low content of molybdenite in the rougher flotation step has been made possible by the application of a combination of reagents first developed at the Climax mill and used with some modification in the treatment of all primary molybdenum ores. Mud is one of the oldest building materials used by man, but it is not only of historic interest. Even today in many parts of the world, particularly lightly forested areas, it is the chief building material. Many authorities believe that at least 30% and perhaps 50% of the world's present population lives in earthen dwellings (Dethier, 1985, Coffman et al., 1990). Not all of these people are members of primitive societies or live in third world countries. European, African, Asian, and both North and South American countries contain a large number of such structures. In the United States, the American West, and particularly the Southwest, is known for this type of construction. Some of the earliest remains of adobe structures are those discovered in the ruins of Neolithic farming villages in Mesopo¬tamia dating as far back as 7000 BC (Steen, 1972). The word adobe has its roots in Egyptian hieroglyphs denoting brick and evolved to its present form through Arabic and Spanish (Lumpkins, 1977). The Spanish conquest of the New World spread the use of wooden molds to produce a standard adobe brick. Today, the word adobe is used to describe various earth building materials and techniques, usually referring to sun-dried adobe brick now used in the United States, but is also applied to puddled adobe structures, mud-plastered logs or branches (Jacal or waddle-and-daub), pressed-earth blocks, and rammed-earth walls or pisé (Smith and Austin, 1989, Ferm, 1985). Modern mud construction is used in many countries in various parts of the world. In the United States, the states from Texas to California are perhaps best known for this type of construction. Of these states, New Mexico has the dominant reputation for adobe use. Indeed, in New Mexico the Santa Fe style (Fig. 1) has made adobe not only acceptable, but preferred. RAW MATERIALS Adobe soil used by present day adobe producers, and probably past adobe producers as well, is principally sandy loam (50% clay and silt), although clayey silts are used in some areas (Coffman et al., 1990). In New Mexico, the best adobe soils are those developed on stream deposits, particularly Holocene (Recent) terrace deposits and older, loosely compacted geologic formations, such as the Santa Fe Group (Tertiary) located in the Rio Grande Valley. Some modern adobe producers use a mixture of materials from the screened fines of aggregate operations and mud from irrigation ditches in the river valleys combined with varying amounts of sand to produce the proper blend. Mineralogy Bulk Mineralogy: X-ray diffraction analyses of whole rock samples from many parts of the world where adobe is the dominant construction material show the major constituents of adobe are quartz and feldspar, with lesser amounts (in order of abundance) of calcite, clay minerals, and gypsum (Coffman et al., 1990). Adobes from and climates contain considerable calcite; in some cases calcite is second only to quartz in volume. Quartz, feldspar, most of the clay minerals, and some calcite commonly are derived from the mechanical/chemical breakdown of older rocks units. Some of the clay minerals, much of the calcite and perhaps all of the gypsum are precipitated from evaporating water. Clay Mineralogy: Clay-size minerals consist dominantly of clay minerals, but nearly clay-size fractions contain minor amounts of quartz and calcite, and occasionally other nonclay minerals. In earth construction materials from New Mexico, clay-size particles are the most compositionally variable in commercial adobe soils. However, the clay mineral groups in this size fraction consist of about equal parts of expandable clay minerals (smectite and mixed¬layer illite/smectite or I/S) and non-expandable clay minerals (ka¬olinite, illite, and chlorite), with minor quartz, calcite, and feldspar (Smith and Austin, 1989, Austin, 1990). In the and American Southwest, smectite is commonly calcium-rich and the I/S is dis¬organized and randomly interstratified. In a study of 42 New Mex¬ican commercial adobe soils, only two contained chlorite, and vermiculite, sepiolite, and palygorskite were not found. Soils in temperate climates, as are found in the midwestern and northeastern United States, contain an abundance of illite (Potter et al., 1975). The clay minerals in earthen structures of that region and in Europe commonly contain illite with less amounts of kaolinite, smectite, I/S, chlorite, and vermiculite. In contrast, the clay-size fractions of soils of humid tropical areas are typically acid, with kaolinite as the dominant clay mineral and lesser amounts of I/S, illite, smectite, and others (Chamley, 1989).

I met Austin Taylor in Vancouver on my way home from my first Pioneer examination. He asked me to examine the unsuccessful old Lorne mine, adjoining and west of the Pioneer. I had no idea that this meeting would lead to one of the outstanding successes and pleasant associations of my career. I knew nothing of Taylor, except that Gen. McRae and associates said that he had been engaged in lumbering and was interested in an oil and gasoline marketing company called Home Oil. But even if the Lorne examination would be only a small one, in the depths of the Depression in 1931, I was glad to have a chance to look at another gold property, so I agreed to visit the Lorne early in August. The start of the trip was not auspicious. I had been working hard on an unproductive study, and was greatly worried by my father's hopeless illness with tuberculosis. To get a little rest on my way north I had arranged to go from Seattle to Vancouver on the night boat that connected with my train. To my surprise, Bill Boultbee, an associate of Taylor, met me at the train in Seattle at 9:30. He said he would drive me to Vancouver, arriving at one In the morning. I was so tired that I begged off and let him take the drive alone Boultbee was most understanding and friendly, but I knew how I would have felt if I had been kind enough to take the long drive to help a stranger and then had been forced to make the return midnight drive alone. I was lucky they did not call off the examination at once. I got a good sleep on the Vancouver boat and Austin Taylor met me at the Hotel Vancouver for breakfast. After a brief talk he took me to the small steamer that made the 4-hr sail up Howe Sound to the village of Squamish. This was the end of the Province-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway that was eventually to be a shortcut from Vancouver to the Canadian National main line at Prince George. Because

Coal has been mined in the Kailuan mining area for more than 130 years. The remaining reserves consist of, in large part, coals that would have been considered economically unminable or technically not feasible by the previous generations. Some of the current operations have to resort to overmining because the lower seams had been extracted in the past. This paper deals with the feasibility and proper layout of mining roadways of overmining carried out in the No. 5 seam of Qianjiaying coal mine of Kailuan mining area using numerical and physical simulation. FLAC2D was used to investigate the characteristics of stress and displacement in the overburden after extraction of the lower seams. It also analyzed the proper layouts of gateroads in the upper seams, i.e. locating them in the stress-relief zone of the gob so that their stability can be easily maintained. In addition, a two-dimensional physical model was constructed for investigation of damages to the upper seams due to mining of the lower seams. Finally, based on the results of investigations, proper gateroads layout was designed and successful extraction was implemented for panel 1357 in the No.5 seam.

The perlite review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. Worldwide production of perlite in 1991 was estimated to be 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st). Events in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union caused reporting of production, consumption and reserves from those regions to cease. The US Bureau of Mines reported data only from the US and Greece. Together, the two countries produced about 701 kt (773,000 st), down from 739 kt (815,000 st) in 1990. US production of perlite amounted to about 547 kt (603,000 st) last year. US production was supplied by 10 companies operating 11 mines in seven western states. There are 74 plants producing expanded perlite in 33 states and in Canada. All the companies engaged in mining perlite are also expanding it.

Eastern US oil shale contains approximately 10 to 12 gallons of oil per ton and 7 to 10% pyritic sulfur. Physical beneficiation of these low grade shales using froth flotation provides a high grade material that makes extraction of oil more economically attractive. The Alabama oil shale used in the present study contained 16.46% organic carbon and 14.5 gallons of oil per ton as determined by Fischer assay. Liberation size of the kerogen was estimated at 10 µm. `Ken-Flote' column flotation technology provided a high grade concentrate containing as much as 60% organic carbon. However, carbon recovery was about 60%. Carbon recovery was improved to 75-85% while maintaining concentrate grades in excess of 40% carbon by providing longer retention time in the column, which facilitated effective bubble-particle collision and attachment.

The complex mineralogy of the Porgera resource has a pronounced effect on process selection for the recovery of refractory gold and silver. Intimate association of gold with pyrite necessitates a high degree of sulphur preoxidation to achieve acceptable levels of gold recovery. Acid pressure oxidation has been demonstrated to be the only commercially proven process capable of achieving the required level of pyrite oxidation. Gangue mineralization dictates preconcentration of the sulphides to limit the acid consuming capacity and carbon dioxide generation during oxidation. However, the relationship between concentrate sulphur grade and gold recovery to concentrate ultimately governs the optimum degree of sulphide preconcentration. Minipiloting of the preconcentration and oxidation stages of the Porgera flowsheet are described. The influence of these processes on subsequent recovery of precious metals together with the technical and economic necessity of concentrate pretreatment prior to oxidation are discussed.

This study was performed to analyze the behavior of the blowing curtain face ventilation system modified with a specially designed regulator, called Wing Regulator. The purpose of the regulator is to extend the airflow penetration depth toward the face and allow effective face ventilation at curtain setback up to 13.7m (45ft) from the face. A small scale model of the Wing Regulator was successfully tested in the Mine Ventilation Laboratory at the University of Kentucky. Then a prototype of the proposed regulator was tested in full-scale in mine environment. Series of three dimensional simulations were performed to support this research using validated CFD code. This paper presents results of the performed studies and discuses the advantages of using the Wing Regulator. Presented information relates to the US Provisional Patent Application No 61/818,112.

In the past we have been somewhat harrassed by the terms "'quality control" and "process control". This is especially true where the industry is dependent upon the chemical analysis of their product which in turn informs them how, well they have been controlling the process. The information which they have received, in most cases, is of an historical nature rather than of current value. The word "control" is to have more significance in future operations. This is particularly true in the metals industry. As the industry continues to process lower grade ores, and processing costs continue to rise, they must obtain more information faster to exercise "control" to its fullest extent.

Downhill, or regenerative conveyors have always been a challenge to the design engineer due to their natural instability under load. The last decade has seen the appearance of high tonnage, high negative lift conveyors with several hundred meters of drop. These conveyors have made necessary the development of new braking systems and intelligent drive controls to address their starting and stopping requirements under various load conditions. "More than 6,300 people converged on the Colorado Convention Center for the 2017 SME Annual Conference and Expo and 119th National Western Mining Conference in Denver, CO on Feb. 19-22. Many of them crammed in to hear Douglas Silver deliver the keynote address to the conference.Silver is a portfolio manager for Orion Mine Finance, a private-equity fund focused on providing funding to advanced-stage base and precious metal projects and is one of the most respected voices in the field of mineral economics. Prior to joining Orion, he served as chief executive officer and chairman of International Royalty Corp., a global mineral royalty company, which he founded in 2003 and sold in 2011.Those who were hoping that Silver would deliver at least a bit of optimism during his 90-minute presentation got what they came for from the talk titled, “When are commodity prices going to rebound?”It marked the second time Silver has presented the keynote address to SME, the first was in 2008 and was delivered during the height of mining’s super cycle (ME, June 2008). In his 2017 address, Silver looked back on the previous 10 years and the massive contraction of the global economy that resulted from the great recession that began near the end of 2008.It has been a challenging time for the mining industry. About US$1.4 trillion was lost in the global mining stocks from 2011 to Jan. 6, 2016. Major mining companies exceeded $60 billion in write downs between 2012 and 2013 and investors lost confidence in the sector, putting the global mining industry into a bear market that has taken mining equities to historic lows.However, that was then and this is now.Using numerous examples, including rising commodity prices, a steady decline in the U.S. unemployment rate, increases in discretionary income and the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which topped the 20,000 mark for the first time ever in February, Silver theorized the current down cycle is near its end and the demand for metals and other commodities will see a sharp increase by 2025. He also noted that investors are beginning to rotate back into mining equities."

KMG Minerals, Inc., a mica-feldspar-quartz producer in Kings Mountain, N.C., uses about 50% of its plant's -200 mesh slimes to manufacture brick. However, the company is unable to market the remaining 50% of this fine mineral mixture. The NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory operated a pilot plant to process these slimes to produce an additional product. The process, consisting of blunging and hydraulic sizing, was designed to separate a kaolin-enriched -270 mesh product from the bulk of the coarser +270 mesh "grit" minerals. Size analysis showed that this product was 80% finer than 20 microns and 50% finer than 6 microns (in equivalent spherical diameter). An evaluation indicated that it is a hydrous aluminum silicate that might be suitable in the filler and extender markets for traffic paint, some types of plastics, joint cements, and dusting compounds. Because of its high viscosity, it will be difficult to use more than a small percentage in cast ceramic bodies. However, it might be possible to use up to 10% in extruded ceramic bodies (i.e., electrical porcelain). The 15.2 cm (6 in,) diameter Linatex Hydrosizer was tested using a range of teeter water flowrates, so that the net rise velocity was varied from 0.10 cm/s to 0.40 cm/s. The solid feed rate to the sizer was maintained at approximately 1.1 t/hr/m2 (0.12 ton/hr/ft2). Tests were run using both "shallow" (i.e., 6 in.) and "deep" (i.e., 15 in. teetered beds. The best overall result was obtained when the sizer was operated with the "deep" teeter bed and a net rise velocity of 0.10 cm/s. About 97% of the +270 mesh material was rejected and approximately 79% of the -270 mesh material was recovered in a 14% solids slurry.
