"When MacLean Engineering chairman and founder Don MacLean got the first question from a minesite about the possibility of addressing ventilation limits through incremental fleet electrification, he was intrigued. It was back in 2015, and the MacLean scissor bolter was already diesel-electric (jumbo trailing cable), so it made sense to him that if they could engineer a battery drive system for the unit’s tramming cycle, they would have the inaugural electric vehicle (EV) MacLean unit.At that time, there were not any entirely diesel-free hard rock mines in existence on the planet, and that remains the case to this day — although the Borden project in northern Ontario is progressing toward that goal (see page 33). This meant there was essentially zero market demand for battery electric vehicles as well as a complete lack of battery technology to address the battery electrification of heavy haulage. Heavy haulage is the part of a typical mine’s mobile fleet with the largest footprint when it comes to diesel particulate emissions, greenhouse gases and wasted energy in the form of heat.Three years later — the wave of battery electrification that is currently picking up speed across the mining industry promises to hit full swing by the early 2020s when a slew of new build, diesel-free mines will start construction. But this movement toward emissions-free mobile fleets is not a completely new phenomenon. Instead, it is an updating of mining technology from a previous generation. What is going on now is the re-electrification of mining. Up until the 1960s, early generations of battery technology (lead acid) and electric locomotive systems were the norm for material and ore haulage in Canada and elsewhere.The thought of a coming paradigm change in mining was particularly pertinent to Don MacLean back in 2015, as he had been part of the era that ushered in the first generation of rubber-tire diesel equipment, when he was a divisional foreman with Inco in Sudbury in the 1970s. He was part of the operating team that was tasked to build a rail loop on one extraction level of the mine. At that time, events on the ground overtook the project, as diesel-powered mobile equipment became a viable option. Once the first diesel scoop was introduced at Creighton #3 shaft, it was clear what the power, haulage capacity and mobility could do for operations and that era of electric rail haulage underground was effectively over."

This investigation has concentrated on optimizing the newly developed Pansep linear screen and developing empirical models to predict the screening performance. Most empirical models developed in the past to predict the performance for industrial screens are suitable for the vibratory screens. Understandably, these models are deficient in predicting the performance of linear screens due to the difference in their operating principle. Thus, the main objective of this study has been to develop empirical models suitable for linear screens to predict the partition coefficient for a given size fraction as a function of the aperture size. The inadequacy of the conventional model equation originally developed for vibratory screen has been demonstrated and a modified equation developed to predict the partition coefficient as a function of the normalized mean particle size (d/d50c). In addition, new model equations have been developed for linear screens to predict the screening efficiency as a function of the separation size(d50) and to predict the separation size as a function of the screen aperture. It is believed that these model equations will be useful for the plant operators in selecting the mesh panels of correct aperture size and in predicting the product size distribution based on the selected aperture size.

Mine backfilling is a desirable method for the disposal of retorted oil shale. Hydraulic, mechanical and pneuna.cic transport and stowing methods were investigated, and the mechanical transport and stowing method using conveyors was selected as the most promising system. Transport of retorted oil shale at the rate of 3000 cons per hour (2700 t(h) to the backfill level, situated about: 2000 feet (610 m) below surface, with skips or conveyors is uneconomic. Hence, borehole transport utilizing gravity flow was investigated. This paper describes the theory of flow, flow properties of retorted oil shale, and the design of a borehole and hopper system.

Reserve estimation is a process that commences with sampling and culminates in the issuance of a reserve statement. The tin, gold and diamonds that occur as marine placers on the continental shelf are low grade with very erratic mineral distributions. Sampling, using a variety of special equipment, determines the extent and grade of the mineralization. The sample size is important, especially for diamonds. Together with the sampling density, it determines the accuracy of the grade estimate. Bulk sampling is a confirmatory process. The choice of mining equipment, either new or developed from onshore activities, dictates the unit costs, the cutoff grades and the selectivity of extraction. Thus, the size of the blocks that comprise the mining plan and the reserves are determined. A variety of estimation methods of different reliability are available, with the most sophisticated being kriging. Dilution and losses during mining must be taken into account in estimation, and a grade-volume curve should be constructed. Diamond deposit estimation also involves an extra variable, the dollar value of the stones. During and after mining, essential feedback on the accuracy of un estimation may be given by the RIE factor and by a mineral balance. Reserve estimates are required for several reasons and may be subject to public disclosure. The use of the correct definitions is, therefore, important.

Many times during the construction of a project, whether large or small, the engineer will become involved with management of the work and workforce. In some cases, mine management will turn over the direction and responsibility of doing the work to the engineer. Because of this, it is important to know some of the basic principles of human resource applications- among other management concerns. This chapter, therefore, looks at the fundamental principles of human resource management. Three broad discussions are presented to the reader. These are: (1) organization, communications, and responsibilities of management; (2) analysis of worker motivation; and (3) supervisory leadership. Each topic encompasses the current thinking for coal mining and mining management. Much of the information in this chapter comes from Practical Coal Mine Management, by this author and published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., which discusses in depth many of the ideas presented here. Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently studied several redirected scrubber discharge configurations in its full-scale continuous miner gallery for both dust and gas control when using an exhaust face ventilation system. Dust and gas measurements around the continuous mining machine in the laboratory showed that the conventional scrubber discharge directed outby the face with a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust curtain setback appeared to be one of the better configurations for controlling both dust and gas. Redirecting all the air towards the face equally up both sides of the machine increased both the dust and gas concentrations around the machine. When all the air was redirected towards the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, gas accumulations tended to be reduced at the face at the expense of increased dust levels in the return and on the curtain side of the mining machine. A 6.1-m (20-ft) exhaust curtain setback without the scrubber operating resulted in the lowest dust levels around the continuous mining machine, but this configuration resulted in some of the highest levels of dust in the return and gas on the off-curtain side of the mining face. Two field studies showed some similarities to the laboratory findings, with elevated dust levels at the rear corners of the continuous miner when all the scrubber exhaust was redirected towards the face either up the off-tubing side or equally up both sides of the mining machine.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. Controlling worker dust exposure on longwall mining systems is difficult because the working face area serves as an immediate return during the mining cycle and the amount of airborne dust generated is directly related to production. Since improvements in longwall mining technology have significantly boosted production levels, additional technology is needed to control the airborne respirable dust generated at present and future production levels. One concept to reduce longwall worker's dust exposure is to maintain two splits of air at the face -- a clean intake split in the workers walkway, and a return (dusty) split over the face conveyor. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently investigated a concept to overcome the visibility handicap of face partitions by utilizing a permeable polyester mesh. The mesh material was anticipated to provide adequate air-splitting capabilities as long as the pressure differential between the face and worker walkway was minimal. Initial testing of this concept at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory showed that notable reductions could be achieved with a 1/8 in (3.18 mm) and 1/16 in (1.59 mm) mesh opening size. Dust reductions at 100 ft (30.5 m) and 200 ft (61.0 m) downstream of source were 58 and 36 pct, respectively, for the 1/8 in mesh and 79 and 55 pct, respectively for the 1/16 in mesh. Longwall application of the 1/8 in mesh showed similar results to the Lake Lynn Laboratory tests. A flame retardant mesh was used underground with portable lighting mounted on the shearing machine for face side lighting.

"What is your assessment of the minerals business?My experience with mining has been primarily in the coal sector until about 10 years ago, when I also became heavily involved in the aggregates and industrial minerals sectors. I have also had peripheral involvement through family and partners in the gold sector, with just enough exposure to gold to become fascinated. In 1994, I visited Ghana and considered the possibility of taking an expat assignment at a surface gold mine that had just been started.It is not news that the coal sector in this country has suffered tremendously in recent years. Especially hard hit is the central Appalachian region, where a number of factors combined have had a devastating effect on production, jobs and the economy. These factors include federal regulations affecting coal production and use, higher production costs and decreasing market share of Appalachian coal by the switch from lower sulfur coal in favor of lowercost, higher sulfur coal from the Illinois Basin, as utilities have installed scrubbers to comply with Phase II of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Nationally, the lower cost of natural gas has been a huge factor affecting coal use. In Kentucky, for example, which exports to other states around 70 percent of its coal, those markets are disappearing, as utilities close coal units in favor of natural gas. This is a structural change in the electricity market, and one that will become more pronounced as federal greenhouse gas regulations are implemented.We often hear the phrase, "the war on coal." While there are certainly a number of market factors affecting coal production and use, this phrase captures a different element that is all too real. The attacks have come from environmental activist groups for many years; from some in the media and, in the last few years, from a White House administration that believes strongly in alternatives to coal. Then, there really is an alternative to coal in the form of the previously untapped unconventional gas reserves that allowed utilities to move away from coal.Coal mining will continue in this country. In fact, it appears that our production is holding fairly steady at about a billion tons a year. And predictions that I have seen indicate this will continue for the next few years. What impact the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan will have beyond 2020 is another question.What do you feel is the future of the minerals industry - near term and longer term?Our society depends on the future of minerals in this country being strong. Near term, we are going through some of the typical cycles. Having also been involved in aggregates during the last few years, the business follows government infrastructure projects, such as highway construction and public and private sector development. Those sectors are heavily dependent upon government spending and a strong economy. Increased spending in those sectors, which appears to be on the horizon, should provide additional market shares for aggregates."

"What is your history and how did you get involved in mining?Like many SME members, I came from a mining community with a family history in mining, in my case Walkerville, MT. Both of my grandfathers were underground miners. My father was a miner for a short time. He later sold drinks to the miners. Unfathomable by today’s standards, my dad would pick up the miners’ checks at the pay office and have them cashed and waiting with a shot and beer for the miners when their shift ended. My mother was a nurse, who from time to time, would patch up an unfortunate miner. I remember walking past multiple picket lines on the way to and from grade school, watching homes being boarded-up. I grew up with a deep respect for the critical relationship between labor and management.I had no intention of going into mining and initially set out to pursue a career in chemical engineering. But I attended my first two years of engineering at Montana Tech, due to the proximity and affordability. This is where I met Dr. Tom Finch, a mining professor who taught statics to the engineering students. After a coaching session in a hallway, half way through my sophomore year, I switched to mineral processing engineering. In his colorful way, Professor Finch advised me that, “You do not want to make #@*!! erasers and #@*!! Jell-O the rest of your life go talk to the guys in mineral processing.” He was very persuasive and here I am today.How about your involvement with SME?I encountered SME out of school and a little later in my career. Terry Maio and Jim Arnold invited me to local section meetings in the Missouri Lead Belt. That was my first exposure to the technical programming and relationship building that was possible at the local level. After Ozark Lead shut down and I relocated to Nevada, Rich Johnson, Scott Barr and Dave Collins encouraged me to attend my first annual meeting in Salt Lake City, UT. I joined SME at that time and was fortunate to be engaged by members like Art Schweizer and Jim Arnold, and I soon began the leadership progression for the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division. Since then, I have supported SME at the national and the local level serving in multiple roles and capacities."

The lining of the tunnel and shafts for a new section of New York City's- water system required extensive components to produce, deliver and place a continuous tunnel linning. The project placed approximately 153,000 CM (200,000 cy) of concrete for 5,340 M (17,520) of drill and blast 7.3 M (24 ft.) ID tunnel, located at depths of 152 M (500 ft.) to 213 M (700 ft.) . This section of tunnel will be connected to the surface water distribution system via four shafts of varying diameters ranging from 5.8 M (19 ft.) ID to 1.5 M (5 ft.) ID . All work was done beneath the streets of Manhattan under the rigid constraints of the City of New York and the Bureau of Water Supply regulations.

As one begins to contemplate the organization of a talk with the title "Iron Ore - The Permanent State of Evolution," the main divisions appear to be the past, the present, and the future. But distaste for repetition of the present production achievements, which scarcely need additional description on this occasion, soon leads one to the conclusion that a more appropriate division of the subject is simply the past and the future . . . with emphasis on the future. We are working in the present, but it can only be understood by what has taken place in the years and decades gone by, and/or under what terms we will have to face the future. Evolution is more often thought of as a steady change - but steady change is really the product of revolutions, sometimes making headlines but often unnoticed at the time. With hindsight, we recognize the great importance of the emergence of the Bessemer converter and the open hearth and the vast influence that both have had on steel making and the changing ore demand. In this country we also see schooners opening the era for lake transportation of iron ore from Michigan to Take Erie. Later, steamships haul the ore from the Mesabi Range to the steel centers of the country. In order to take full advantage of the inland seaway, there had to be revolutions in ship design, loading and unloading facilities and channel and lock development. Full scale utilization of the resources of the Mesabi Range, itself, required parallel upheavals such as the development of new production equipment, and substitution of modern forms of energy for horsepower, and, yes, manpower, as well.

The handleability monitor has been specifically designed to provide a simple, rapid and on-site assessment of the whole or part consignment of a coal blend in its ‘as-received’ condition. Evaluation has been carried out at a number of coal-handling plants, on both metallurgical and power station coals from a variety of sources world-wide. The results which are used to predict which coals could routinely pass through a handling plant at line capacity, without causing blockage or delay, have also been correlated with moisture, ash and size analyses of the coal to develop a predictive model of handleability.

The HILTI OneStep rockbolt was implemented for roadway development in German deep coal mines in 2004. The development by HILTI Company is based on a technical joint venture with RAG Deutsche Steinkohle AG. The technical development of a One-Step bolting system was required for weak strata conditions at the roadway development face. Standard resin bolting has reached the limit of performance when boreholes are squeezed and cannot be filled with capsules. In some cases the heading face is brittle and requires additional support for installation of the bolts and a person working immediately next to the borehole. The Hilti One-Step system allows automated and safe processing at the heading front and provides the key technique to avoid these problems.

Efficient and re1iable methods of fragmentation through blasting have been sought ever since the introduction of black powder in mining operations, but the pace of investigation became faster with the discovery of nitroglycerine. The development of modern measuring instruments and the need to blast more rock with the least damage has made the study of blasting mechanics and its application more important, particularly since the oil embargo. Investigations into the practical approach evolved by Daws (1909) and the work done to make it more useful is discussed. The work of several investigators is touched upon with particular reference to the development of computer programs to simulate and optimize blasting operations.

This paper considers mining ventures occurring in rural communities in Galicia, Spain and Western Australia, Australia. It compares and contrasts the communities where mining is taking precedence over other industries, examining the potential land use conflicts and the future of both the communities and the mines currently operating there. The Galician case study, Trevinca, is located 200 km inland and was once a primary producing area, notable for its scenic alpine landscapes, which have since been developed for small scale tourism purposes. The Australian case study, Boddington is located 100 km inland in what has been a highly productive farming area. Mining was a marginal industry in the case study areas but due to the comparative devaluing of agriculture and tourism and the increased value of mining outputs, mining has increased in scale and economic importance. This paper will consider the environmental, social and economic impacts that have occurred in both the case study localities. Where there have been land use conflicts, strategies for minimising the adverse outcomes will be considered.

A heavy mineral sand sample was tested containing 13% heavy mineral consisting of rutile, zircon, and ilmenite. Eleven tests were run at a mill site with a Mineral Deposit Limited MG 4 spiral to determine the effect of the addition 0; magnets to the spiral compared to conventional gravity separation. Different magnet configurations and field strengths were tested. Optimum results were obtained with the spiral retrofitted with magnets. The heavy mineral content of the concentrate was increased from 55.5% in the control to 64.2% with the magnets. The 8.7% improvement in heavy mineral recovery was due not only to the weakly-magnetic ilmenite, but also to increased recoveries if the non-magnetic zircon and rutile. The increased recoveries were achieved with no loss of concentrate grade.

Geologists at the Illinois State Geological Survey are evaluating geologic and land use conditions that affect the minability of coal to determine how much coal is available for development using current technology and mining practices. Coal resources are being evaluated for selected 7.5-minute quadrangle study areas. In a central Illinois study area, more than 25% of the deep-minable resources were limited from development by unstable roof conditions resulting from thick unconsolidated sediments overlying thin bedrock overburden. In some southern and southeastern Illinois study areas, geologic conditions associated with a paleo-channel limit the minability of significant resources of low-to medium-sulfur coal. Some features which were thought to limit mining, such as areas of closely-spaced oil wells, have been found to have minimal impact on the amount of coal recovered.
