"The authors have successfully developed an innovative rehabilitation concept, which meets actual technical standards and minimizes the impact on the operation of a key conveyor tunnel. A flexible and stepwise ground support rehabilitation program utilized a combination of yielding steel arch sections with grout filled fabric hoses, which represents a fast and safe backfilling support system. The system was developed and successfully installed at Bingham Canyon Mine, the world’s largest open pit copper mine, which also includes numerous underground structures. The mine is owned and operated by Kennecott Utah Copper (RTKC) a fully owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto. The system was implemented at a conveyance tunnel, which was originally designed as a railroad tunnel, but was re-commissioned and is currently used as a conveyor belt tunnel to transport ore from the open pit to processing facilities outside the mine. The existing structure showed signs of overstressing due to movements in the surrounding rock mass, which had to be addressed with a yielding support system in order to provide safe access into the tunnel. However, the impact on the conveyor belt operation due to support installation was to be limited to the bare minimum. Keywords: rehabilitation, yielding support, mining, stabilization, and grout filled fabric hose.PROJECT DESCRIPTION The C6 Tunnel is considered a critical asset for the operation of the Bingham Canyon mine as it comprises the standard route for transporting crushed ore from the open pit to the processing facility on a continuous conveyor belt system. The C6 tunnel was originally built as a railroad tunnel. Construction was completed in 1959. The original horse-shoe shaped cross section of the tunnel was 18 feet wide and 24-1/2 feet high [8]. The tunnel length was approximately 18,000 feet. During its service life, the railroad tunnel has undergone several transformations. The length of the tunnel towards the Bingham Canyon pit was shortened over the course of mining operations and the railroad tracks in the tunnel were removed. The invert was partially backfilled (3 feet typical) and a 72 inches belt conveyor was installed. Currently, the C6 Tunnel is nominally only approximately 21 feet high and 15,000 feet long. Ground Support and Rehabilitation Measures prior to 2014 The C6 tunnel was mined mainly with conventional mining methods, using drill & blast as the typical one. However, the weak geological sections, such as those encountered in the Fortuna fault, were excavated by shaping and chipping with machine-held moils [8]."

The grinding process in the mining industry has seen an increased throughput to accomplish greater production and lower overall production costs. Up to 8-9 MW, a single motor can be connected to drive the mill through a pinion and ring gear. Above the single-pinion drive limit, the dual pinion approach was developed to allow two drive motors to be used. This allowed the mill input power to be increased to 16-18 MW. Recent developments in clutch and ring gear materials and design are allowing greater input powers of up to 20 MW to be considered. To avoid damage to the ring gear by uneven load sharing between the two motors, it is critical that the two machines accurately share load. This is typically achieved by either drives capable of controlling load torque between motors or using a GE proprietary control system that accurately controls the load torque from each motor.

Spontaneous combustion caused by the movement of air through the waste is a major problem. Combat methods attempt to exclude oxygen rich air, but little is known about airflow through the waste. The use of a tracer gas technique to monitor the flow of nitrogen from an injection hole during inertisation is described. Correlations are drawn between barometric pressure changes and the nitrogen entering the waste. As no information was obtained about airflow and oxidation zones, a second experiment was conducted to sample from the waste, but the results were inconclusive. A finite element method developed to model the pressure and airflow distribution, under steady state and nitrogen injection conditions is outlined

"Advanced data acquisition and process modelling technology provides online data and decision support about different aspects of the resource extraction process. Real-time approaches have recently been applied to utilize the value of this information for improved production control in mineral resource extraction in different operational set ups including coal, polymetallic ore and gold deposits. The key concept of these approaches promotes the change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online material characteristics data acquired during extraction at the mining face, during material handling and processing with a sequentially up-datable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimization of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control. The contribution reviews recent developments in the three main constituents sensor based material characterisation, rapid updating of grade control models and simulation based optimization for improved production control. Technological readiness is assessed and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. The value added is illustrated by means of selected case studies. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of known and established mineral reserves, the decrease in head grades and the continuing demand of mineral raw materials by the modern society, future exploitation will move towards extraction of deposits under geologically more complex conditions. Complex deposits are characterized by a low continuity in grade, presence of deleterious elements such as arsenic and high irregularity in the geometry of the ore boundaries. The profitable exploitation of such deposits becomes significantly more challenging. To be able to better utilize such unconventional mineral resources of the future, smart autonomous mining systems are needed, which integrate local exploration of spatially varying material characteristics in–situ and have the ability to follow and extract the pay zones in the ore body while minimizing dilution (Buxton and Benndorf, 2013). The main barriers to overcome for the successful economic exploitation are: • effective grade control which will maximize resource potential along the whole value chain, • minimization of handling zero-value material introduced by dilution, thus • reducing unnecessary expenditure of energy and financial resources and • management and control of the geological uncertainty due to limited information available,"

"Miners worldwide use a tremendous amount of energy in producing finished minerals for the end user market. In accomplishing this goal, they incur energy costs that can range from 20% to 30% of the total cost of production, so there is fertile ground for cost savings. To unlock this huge value in cost reduction, energy analysis is the key and is broken into several segments: 1. Fuel analysis for power generation 2. Energy supply & demand 3. Opportunity cost for lack of power 4. Backup power 5. Power contracts 6. Energy efficiency 7. Renewable energy 8. Continuous energy management FUEL ANALYSIS FOR POWER GENERATION What is the first thing we evaluate when looking at power supply alternatives for the mining industry’s large power requirements? Is it 1) site, 2) engineering, procurement, and construction companies, 3) independent power producers, 4) turbine vendors, 5) grid connections, or 6) fuel supply, logistics, and infrastructure? In evaluations of power supply alternatives for mining companies with special emphasis in developing countries, there is one over-riding conclusion: reliable fuel supply drives the energy generation economic engine. Evaluating several different fuels including liquefied natural gas (LNG), natural gas, diesel, heavy fuel oil, and liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) among others, the best project outcomes are those where fuel supply, pricing, logistics, and infrastructure are given an extensive amount of time during the analysis stage. In an assessment of the twenty-year costs of generating power from multiple fuels, each fuel’s costs were placed into three separate net present value (NPV) buckets of: 1) capital, 2) operating and maintenance, and 3) fuel. Within a range of 65% to 85% for all fuels, fuel cost was the largest component of the NPV of the life cycle power generation costs. So if 65% to 85% of your life cycle power generation cost is one item, shouldn’t miners spend a corresponding amount of time in the analysis stage fully understanding this key determinant for a successful power project? In developing countries where power generation infrastructure may not exist or does not exist at the same level as is found in North America and Europe, fuel analysis becomes even more important. One of the key questions for fuel importation in developing countries is the draft at existing ports to allow larger vessels to dock at the jetty. Can larger ocean-going tankers dock at the port for off-loading, or is the port’s draft too shallow, thus forcing a Single Point Mooring (SPM) system or Conventional Buoy Mooring (CBM) system to be constructed at substantial capital expense? Once fuel can be imported, sufficient onshore storage capacity should exist, or must be built to off-load the entire fuel cargo from the larger ships. Additionally, the throughput capacity of the pipeline from SPM/CBM must allow a rapid unloading of the fuel from ship to shore to eliminate steep demurrage costs for the project."

"With the final goal of ultrasonic application to ion exchange in a resin-in-pulp (RIP) system, the feasibility of an indirect ultrasonic application with a submersed ultrasonic probe was investigated first for the enhancement of ion exchange in the following resin-in-solution (RIS) system: Lewatit MonoPlus MP 600XL in an artificial solution with 106 ppm uranium. Ultrasonic radiation enhanced the ion exchange efficiency without mechanical degradation of resin. For 3.6 g/L of resin, the enhancement was 79 percent after 10 min of ion exchange and it gradually decreased to 11 percent at 60 min. In addition, a preliminary test of the mechanical stability of the resin in the RIP system showed little mechanical fracture of the resin due to ultrasound, which indicates that indirect ultrasonic application by a submersed ultrasonic probe is applicable for RIP systems. IntroductionIn uranium ore processing, the ion exchange process has been used on a commercial scale for preconcentration and purification (Gonzalez-Luque and Streat, 1984). The ion exchange process is divided into two processes: (1) a resin-in-column process with the uranium-bearing solutions passed through columns containing resins and (2) a resin-in-pulp (RIP) process with the leached ore pulp exposed to resins. The latter does not require the separation process of leach liquor and ore solids, which reduces process costs. This process, which has been developed commercially since 1955, has a certain drawback. The adsorption rate and efficiency in the RIP process are relatively low, so numerous contacts between resins and leached ore pulp are needed, which adds to the cost (Merritt, 1971). It is necessary to study methods to reduce process costs.Ultrasound can intensify mass transfer, increase the rate of chemical reactions, and change reaction pathways (Thompson and Doraiswamy, 1999; Luque de Castro and Priego-Capotem, 2007; Adewuyi, 2001; Luque-Garcia and Luque de Castro, 2003). It has great potential in chemistry and is especially considered to be a promising method for enhancing mass-transfer-limited processes, such as ion exchange. Enterzari and Tahmasbi (2009) reported the effect of ultrasound on water softening by ion exchange. Band et al. (1997) proposed a modulated ultrasound application to water desalination with ion-exchange hollow fibers. These reports revealed that ion exchange kinetics could be enhanced by the application of ultrasound. As for hydrometallurgy, Feng and Aldrich (2000) reported that the elution of an ion exchange resin was enhanced by the use of ultrasonication."

"This work presents a method for the precipitation of cobalt sulfate by alcohols, specifically ethanol and methanol. The effect of the initial concentration of cobalt, the volumetric ratio of alcohol to cobalt sulfate solution, the addition of sulfuric acid and ammonia, and the effects of common ions on the precipitation percentage were investigated. The performances of ethanol and methanol were compared in terms of the precipitation percentage of cobalt sulfate, and explanations for different performances are offered. In the sulfate-based solution, the alcohol was shown to displace water ligands from the first coordination sphere of the cobalt(II) cations, which led to the precipitation of the cobalt ions as cobalt sulfate heptahydrate. SEM analysis revealed that the particle sizes of the powders produced by this method are smaller than those of commercially available cobalt sulfate. The scientific literature contains no data on the solubility of cobalt sulfate in ethanol. In this study, the solubility product constant (Ksp) for cobalt sulfate was experimentally calculated to be approximately 1.15 x 10-5.IntroductionCobalt sulfate, which is one of the most important compounds of cobalt, is used in the electroplating and electrochemical industries. The addition of cobalt sulfate to nickel-plating baths makes the treated metals brighter, harder, smoother and more ductile (Armstrong et al., 1988). It is also used as a desiccant for lithographic inks, varnishes, paints and linoleum, as well as in storage batteries, e.g., nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable batteries (Kang et al., 2010). Cobalt sulfate is employed as a coloring agent in ceramics, enamels and glazes to prevent discoloration and as a copigment for the decoration of porcelain. In addition, cobalt sulfate has been used in animal feeds as a mineral supplement (Budavari et al., 1996; Kirk and Othmer, 1999).In the past, brewers used cobalt sulfate to prolong the life of beer foam (Kesteloot et al., 1968). Ranchers have dosed livestock with cobalt sulfate or used fertilizer enriched with this mineral to ensure that their animals obtained sufficient amounts of the trace mineral, which is essential to the production of vitamin B12. Cobalt sulfate has also been used in veterinary medication to prevent and treat cobalt deficiency in ruminants, which causes a reduction in feed intake and body weight, accompanied by emaciation, anemia and debility.Cobalt sulfate is a water-soluble bivalent cobalt salt. Cobalt sulfate heptahydrate dehydrates entirely at 420° C, and the dehydrated salt forms red monoclinic crystals."

INTRODUCTION The Magma mine, located at Superior, AZ, some 100 km (60 miles) east of Phoenix, was discovered in 1875, and was originally mined for silver. The property was acquired by W. B. Thompson who formed the Magma Copper Co. in 1910. Prior to 1965, square-set mining and cut-and-fill methods were used to mine steeply dipping veins at Magma. Ore was moved to the chute by gravity in the square-set stopes and by slusher in the cut-and-fill stopes. The stopes were gobbed with waste from the surface and development headings in the mine. The original square-set method of mining was modi¬fied in order to extract replacement ore bodies in limestones that dipped at 0.52 rad (30°) and varied in thick¬ness from 4.6 to 38 m (15 to 125 ft). Mining of these ore bodies was done by starting at the upper lateral ex¬tremities and retreating to the access openings. The timber square sets and cribbing were used as temporary support, the ground being allowed to cave as the mining retreated. It was found, however, that mining in such a manner was very inefficient; safety hazards increased be¬cause of the blocky and fractured characteristics of the ore and the weakness of the hanging wall. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining is now the primary stoping method used at Magma, and no pillars are left for later extraction. Four ore bodies are pres¬ently being mined. These ore bodies (see Fig. 1) dip conformably at 0.52 rad (30°) to the east with the host limestone and shale sediments, their average strike length is about 122 m (400 ft), and their thickness varies from 9 to 38 m (30 to 125 ft). The ore bodies are separated by varying thicknesses of barren rock. Three of them come together at various elevations primarily in the area of the main feeder fault, but there is an apparent horizontal displacement of about 23 m (75 ft) on the main feeder fault which complicates stope layout. The method as originally applied has been modified in order to mine more efficiently ore bodies that are 9 m (30 ft) or more in thickness. The modification was made to mine all the ore at a given elevation before dropping down for the cut below. The advantage of this is that mining is done on a horizontal plane and there¬fore muck removal can be mechanized. Also multiple faces are made available, thereby improving overall min¬ing efficiency. Another major change made was to carry a 6.7-m (22-ft) face when mining the top sill and a 6.4-m (21-ft) face when mining under fill rather than the former standard 3.35-m (11-ft) high face. This change lengthens the mining cycle and cuts mat prepa¬ration costs in half. Stopes are laid out (see Fig. 2) so that maximum mining panels are available and yet one stope crew will not tie up too much of the ore reserve. One stope might consist of as many as 20 panels, and these panels are divided evenly on opposite sides of the extraction cross¬cut. The stope layout is planned so that the maximum tramming distance to the orepass will not exceed 30.5 m (100 ft) on the crosscut and 38 m (125 ft) in the panel. "Horizontal stress can have a profound effect on the stability of an underground limestone mine. The presence of horizontal stress is usually determined once the mine has been developed and the orientation of headers and crosscuts are well established. Multiple attempts are typically made to control roof falls without re-orienting the mine. Once the decision has been made to change the orientation, pillar centers, mine opening widths, and the question of how to determine the correct orientation must be answered.A case history is presented to illustrate how geologic structure, ground conditions and roof falls in adjacent mines, the World Stress Map (Heidbach et al., 2016), in-mine measurement of “cutter” roof orientation, the orientation of strata offset (cats eyes) within borescope holes, and the diametral deviation method of determining horizontal strain from drill core were used to establish the most likely range of horizontal stress.The main headers were re-orientated in a direction parallel to the median of the range of horizontal stress. The crosscuts were angled 60° to the headers to avoid being perpendicular to the horizontal stress direction. Pillar centers and opening widths were increased in the favorable stress direction of the mains and decreased in the less favorable crosscut orientation. The major principal horizontal stress magnitude was estimated using the strain measurements from the diametral deviation method and elastic modulus obtained through testing.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of underground stone mining operations in the United States. As stripping ratios at surface quarries become uneconomical and reach the extent of the mineral boundary, coupled with the encroachment of urban development on previously rural mining operations, the remaining mine reserves are best accessed through underground development.Although the majority of underground limestone mines in the Midwest are in relatively flat lying deposits with minimal geologic structure, many Appalachian mines are in folded and faulted environments. Tectonic horizontal stresses associated with multiple orogenic episodes are locked in the formation and are released as the underground mine is developed.A common misconception is that horizontal stress impacts are more prevalent at shallow depths where the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress may be high. However, field observations and academic research indicates that horizontal stress conditions may be encountered at any depth due to the tectonic compression of the limestone formation (Esterhuizen et al., 2007; Dolinar and Esterhuizen, 2007; Iannacchione et al., 2003; Slaker, Murphy, and Miller, 2017; Kuhnhein and Ramer, 2004). This paper outlines mine design and layout guidelines for the mitigation of horizontal stress impacts on underground stone mining operations through a case history example. This approach to mine planning and the ability to anticipate horizontal stress can significantly improve future production of multiple levels (Newman and Newman, 2019). As underground stone production continues at deeper depths and in more geologically and geometrically complex mining conditions, an emphasis on ground control and the anticipation of horizontal stress can provide safer and more productive single and multiple level mining operations."

The freezing and subsequent solidifying of unstable, weak (sands, silts and clays) and/or wet soil to form a desired-shape frozen barrier around a construction area are possibly the main features of the freezing method for shaft sinking. The barrier, along with strengthening the soil, provides a dry environment to ensure sustainable subsurface construction work before placing a permanent lining. The freezing method requires the installation of freezing pipes in boreholes around the construction area and the circulation of chilled salt water through these pipes and has long been a proven technique for dry shaft sinking through unstable and water-bearing seam around the world. As removing heat from the ground is the main feature of the method, an efficient thermal design of the freezing process is mandatory to ensure success of the shaft sinking operation. This applies to both the sustainability and economy of the intended structure. The design presented in this paper is aimed at figuring out the heat-removing ability and operating time of the refrigerative equipment using some simple formulae. The authors adopted a theoretical approach to determine the quantity of heat to be removed from the ground. The amount of energy for the equipment was found to be greater than that for freezing, which proved the validity of the design. The active freezing period was calculated to be 121 days. The authors followed the structural design of the freezing process they proposed in their previous work (Farazi and Quamruzzaman, 2013). Though the first coal seam in the coalfield was encountered at a depth of approximately 352 m in the subsurface, the target depth for cooling and freezing was decided to be 162 m. The formation demands extra care to nullify its risk of the temporary structure collapsing and water rushing in (Farazi et al., 2012). Discussion on the determination of refrigerative equipment parameters was excluded from the scope of this work.

Ten of the most common mistakes made in the specification and design stages related to user expectations are reviewed along with the cost vs. price implications of those decisions. A general specification and design hierarchy that designers can use to improve conveyor design is included.

New methods of reducing stopping leakage have been investigated by Mine Safety Appliance Research Corporation, working under contract to the U. S. Bureau of Mines. It was found that proper construction techniques are far more important in reducing leakage than the type of sealant used, provided the sealant has sufficient adhesion and strength. Leakage could also be substantially reduced by brushing on modified mortar sealants rather than using the accepted method of trowelling them on.

IIT Research Institute has initiated several multi-sponsored research programs. In this paper the methods for developing four of these programs are discussed. In general, a broad area of investigation must be proposed to interest a spectrum of different industries. The work must not touch upon proprietary data and will probably involve a number of scientific disciplines. Thus, the problem to be solved will attract sponsors who need to know more about the area under study but do not wish, as a single company, to commit the resources required to obtain the necessary know-how for their needs. The paper draws on the background of four IITRI multi-sponsored projects: Size Reduction, a study of grinding of material to reduce their particle size; Melt-Formed Ceramics Research, a method of producing dense, polycrystalline ceramics using glass forming methods; Binders in Ceramic Processing, which addresses the problems associated with the use of organic aids for ceramic processing; and a Study in Air Pollution Technology, a program to review and assess pollution control equipment for current and future applications.

The Highland Uranium Project in Wyoming is an in-situ leach (ISL) facility owned and operated by Power Resources Inc. It is the largest uranium producer in the U.S. and the largest uranium producer by ISL in the western world. With its limited capital investment and low operating costs, the ISL technique has been demonstrated to be an effective and environmentally sensitive method for recovering minerals from these low grade and otherwise uneconomic orebodies.

Over the last fifty years, the treatment of enargite concentrates has not received much attention, primarily because of the availability of other clean concentrates suitable for processing with existing smelting and/or leaching technologies. As traditional copper ores have become scarcer, copper-arsenic ore deposits have garnered more interest. Arsenic release is a significant concern during the treatment of enargite concentrates by pyro or hydrometallurgical methods. Enargite is also very refractive in standard leaching procedures. Thus, economical treatment options for enargite concentrates are needed. Preliminary experiments have shown that the acid bake-leach process could be adapted and used for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this study, low-temperature (100-400º C) sulfuric acid baking of an enargite concentrate followed by water leaching has been evaluated. The results indicate the thermal transformation of enargite to copper sulfate happens during sulfuric acid baking, with most of the arsenic being released from the concentrate into the gas phase when baking at 400º C. The condition for maximum copper extraction (~100%) from the concentrate was found to be 400º C, a sulfuric acid concentration of 0.5 mL/g and two hours baking time. Part of the arsenic was captured in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved the presence of some arsenic in the form of claudetite (As2O3) in the baked concentrate. Acid baking of pure enargite behaved in a similar fashion.

"The city of Minneapolis contracted with CDM Smith to update and provide a conceptual design for improvements to mitigate surcharge flooding in the Central City Storm Water Tunnel System (CCSTS). As a part of the project, CDM Smith conducted a field survey and condition assessment of the existing tunnel system. Information from the survey was then used to update the existing XPSWMM model and develop system wide alternatives.The CCSTS provides storm-water runoff drainage for nearly the entire area of the city’s downtown commercial district. The system consists of deep storm-water tunnels constructed in the St. Peter Sandstone, approximately 21 m (70 ft) below the street’s surface. The primary tunnels comprising the Central City storm water tunnel system are located below Hennepin Avenue, Nicollet Mall, Lesalle Avenue, Marquette Avenue South, 2nd Avenue South, South 5th Street, Washington Avenue South, Portland Avenue South, 2nd Street South, and Chicago Avenue South, as shown in Fig. 1. This network of tunnels conveys the runoff from a 305-acre tributary area that is generally bound by Hennepin Avenue and 1st Avenue North to the east, 12th Street to the south, 4th Avenue South and 7th Avenue South to the west, and 2nd Street South. These tunnels were constructed between 1936 and 1940, except for the Marquette Avenue South tunnel, which was constructed between 1963 and 1964.The CCSTS operates as a gravity flow system. These tunnels were constructed within the St. Peter Sandstone layer of bedrock and emerge from the bedrock at the Mississippi River below St. Anthony Falls. The Central City and the adjacent Chicago Avenue tunnel system converge into a single outfall at the Mississippi River. The runoff discharges from the converged outfall to a side channel of the Mississippi River, called a tailrace, located near the Guthrie Theater. The Minneapolis Division of Surface Water and Sewers provided 32 historic plats detailing the plan and profile of the tunnel system.The tunnel plans show nine different cross-section configurations. Eight configurations within the overall system generally show the same geometric “cathedral” shape with the inside dimensions varying from 1.2 to 1.8 m (4 to 6 ft) in width and 1.8 to 2.4 m (6 to 8 ft) in height. For analysis, these eight configurations were reduced to three configurations with regards to tunnel liner, cross-sectional area and support. For simplicity, the three configurations are described according to the three types of tunnel support used during construction: none required, light timber and heavy timber"

The ability to accurately predict the sound field is essential for the estimation of probable worker noise exposure. For this reason, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is researching computer- based analytical techniques specifically geared to calculate the spatial variation of sound pressure levels within common mining environments. Initial modelling efforts describing the user interface, the simulation of energy acoustics, and the graphical representation of sound pressure levels are presented in this paper.

The U. S. Department of Energy (D.O.E.) requires that the prospective nuclear waste repository in Basalt at Hanford, Washington, comply with State of California mine and tunnel safety orders. These regulations require that all main fans be installed in such a manner as to permit prompt reversal of airflow. This paper evaluates the requirement of air reversal and the appropriateness of imposing such regulations on the proposed nuclear waste repository in Basalt.
