"Shallow-depth (<200m) high temperature submarine hydrothermal systems are not commonly observed on mid-ocean ridge settings, as most known systems are located within arc - island-arc volcanic settings, often proximal to coastal areas (meteoric waters added). In 2013, during the Centre for Geobiology’s 2013 oceanographic cruise (R/V G.O. Sars), a dredge successfully sampled massive sulfides and hydrothermally altered rocks from the top of a volcanic edifice (~144-284 m depth) located on the northern sector of the Kolbeinsey Ridge. Dredged samples include vesicular altered basalts, and matrix supported anhydrite, barite and barite-pyrite-anhydrite volcaniclastic breccias. Sulfidesulfate breccias depict complex zoning where numerous small vent orifices are distributed with large blades of marcasite that appear intergrown with barite. Native sulfur was observed in one of these small vent orifices. On a microscopic scale, numerous spherical silica-rich structures appear associated to these breccias. These rocks are evidence for the presence of a relatively high temperature (minimum 150ºC) shallow-water seafloor hydrothermal system in the Arctic mid-ocean ridge, far from mainland influence. This new discovery presents a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of fluid chemistry, metal mobility and precipitation in shallow hydrothermal systems. The remote location of this system dictates that fluid recharge will be influenced solely by seawater and magmatic fluids, In July-August 2014 we expect to survey this new field and acquire new and comprehensive data."

Environmental self-monitoring is one of the advanced approaches for industrial sustainability programs. Organization for Economy Cooperation and Development (OECD) defines self-monitoring as ?the system of organizational and technical measures put in place and financed by [the] regulated subject? in order to ensure their compliance with regulatory requirements?1. Self-monitoring is beneficial for industrial operators, communities, and governments. Industrial companies use self-monitoring as a central element of their compliance management that allows them to fulfill their duties, obligations, and to avoid citations. When industries control their emissions and ensure workers are not exposed above the regulated limits, communities are better. It is impossible for an EPA, OSHA, or MSHA inspectors to be close to every emission source or workplace full-time. It is much more effective for industries to self-monitor, under due supervision. Occupational conditions are a very important part of industry and health and safety self-monitoring should be highly prioritized. In this paper we will research the regulatory basis and best practice of occupational self-monitoring. We will show that not only is self-monitoring a vital element of an occupational health & safety management system, but that you need a management system for affective monitoring.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada mines, processes and ships crude iron ore, concentrate and pellets from the rich ore bodies of the Labrador Trough area in the extreme north-eastern part of Canada, some five hundred miles from Montreal (see figure 1). There are three main sites of activity. At Schefferville, approximately 12 million tons a year of crude ore (chiefly limonite) are mined, crushed, screened and shipped to Sept-Iles. At Labrador City, 40 million tons of specular hematite are mined annually for processing into 17 million tons of concentrate. Of this, 9 million tons are converted into pellets. All product 1s shipped to Sept-Iles. At Sept-Iles, on the north coast of the St. Lawrence, a six million ton per year concentrator and pellet plant process much of the Scheffervllle ore into high-grade pellets. Also at Sept-Iles are the company&apos;s administration offices stockpiles and shipping facilities. The Terminal facilities can berth and load a 250,000 ton bulk carrier at 19,000 tons per hour.

Rroundtable 2009, a Knight Piésold and Co.-hosted roundtable discussion on mine closure and cover design was held at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV on Feb. 12, 2009. Knight Piésold?s Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce, as well as Knight Piésold representatives Cynthia Parnow and Corey Conrad from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from the Tucson, AZ office were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to approximately three-dozen attendees from four states. Attendees included personnel from seven mining properties and attendees from corporate offices. The majority of attendees were people directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Other attendees were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus. The purpose of Roundtable 2009 was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to mine closure and cover design associated with almost any aspect of a mining operation. This type of forum provides a less inhibited format for discussion, when compared with traditional conferences and symposia. In the roundtable format, lively discussions are encouraged. This discussion was the fourth in the series of Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to heap leach pad design, construction and operation; design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities and site-wide water considerations. Universities are not immune from the large number of retirements facing the mining industry. Department heads anticipate that we will need to replace all of the senior mining engineering faculty in the U.S. by 2020. Long term studies of Ph.D. completion times and success rates indicate that in Engineering disciplines in the U.S., the ten year completion rate is 65% at best and the four year completion rate is less than 8%. We do not have accurate data on completion rates and times for mining or metallurgical engineering Ph.D. students in the U.S. but students self-report their expected completion times are around 4 years. National data on doctoral students indicate that younger, full time students with sufficient financial support have a higher probability of success in completing their degrees in a timely manner. Students in Eastern U.S. mining engineering programs are on average 32 years old, 85% are full time, and the gap between support and cost of attendance is $5,000 per year. Students in Western U.S. programs are on average 38 years old, 78% are full time, and the financial gap is $8,483. Further, it appears that domestic graduate students are not very geographically mobile. The current demand for new faculty is higher in Western programs but the longer term retirements are higher in Eastern programs. While all Ph.D. students who responded to the 2010 survey indicated an interest in a faculty position at some point in their careers, very few were applying for the open positions. Over the past 35 years for which data could be obtained, the maximum number of Ph.D. students enrolled in mining engineering in the U.S. is 115 with a maximum of 27 degrees granted in one year. On average 89 students are enrolled in doctoral programs in mining engineering in the U.S. with average degree production of 15 Ph.D.s per year.

Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to-float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in the processing of porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome the specific problems. Though some of the problems are interrelated the problems have been classified into three broad catagories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.

Productivity is a fascinating concept. Like motherhood or apple pie, we know it as a good thing. Just what it means is not so clear. To a coal miner we assume it means tons of coal hauled from the mine. To the company president it means profit after capital, labor, and other costs have also been reckoned. To the government economist it means output in a balance of payments. What does it mean to the biologist, and can reclamation really be productive? In this paper we discuss productivity from a biological viewpoint, give some yield data for various types of reclamation plantings, and discuss how our demand for or acceptance of differing kinds of productivity is tied up in bigger questions of land use, environmental stability, and resource allocation.

The last decade has seen an enormous increase in the use of contractors right across the Australian mining industry. So much so that contractors now operate 33 of the 68 underground metalliferous mines around Australia and are making significant inroads into iron ore in the west and coal in the east. Safety used to be a low priority for many contractors. The picture has changed dramatically in recent years as most contractors take a far more professional approach to safety management. This paper examines the changes that have occurred and the requirements for effectively managing safety in a contracting environment.

In the past decade Australia has seen the development, construction and commissioning of three complex processing plants for the treatment of lateritic nickel ores. These have all been based on high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) for extraction of nickel and cobalt into solution, followed by solid liquid separation in a CCD circuit. However, flowsheets for separation and purification of the nickel and cobalt diverge markedly. The existing plants have been commissioned with varying degrees of success, with a variety of problems ranging from materials of construction to inadequate design. While the process problems are not insurmountable, there is much room for improvement. Currently there are several new HPAL plants at the feasibility or financing stage. All of these have adopted one of the existing flowsheets. Most of the enhancements have focused on increasing autoclave size. It is now time to assess the success and failures of the three existing plants and incorporate this experience in a design for productivity, efficiency and reliability. Towards this end, this paper discusses aspects of flowsheet optimization, materials of construction and engineering design.

The Umiray Angat 13,2 km long tunnel in Philippines have been bored through extremely variable and difficult ground conditions including a number of special events. In particular the following adverse conditions were found: faults in decomposed ground, high temperature rocks, extremely rapid and important convergence phenomena, water inflows up to 800 litres per second. The special El Nino climatic conditions caused a long dry season and lower the level of the lake that was granting the access by barge to the site under the minimum navigable level. Many equipment have had therefore to be transported to site by a 10 ton capacity helicopter, after having been partially dismounted. For the same reason most of the tunnel drive have been bored servicing the site by 1 ton capacity helicopters to transport materials, spares and personnel. In order to overcome the above geological and logistic problems several innovation were introduced and tested in this project. Despite all that difficulties the 13,2 km of tunnel were bored in about 24 months, with a global average of 500 m/month.

Starting in 1980, a committee of the National Research Council studied the question of why some underground coal mines are safer than others and what could be done to improve the ones with poorer performance. The results indicated that safety is improved by management commitment to safety, by cooperation between labor and management on safety matters, and by quality training of employees and managers. Younger miners have higher accident frequencies, but are less likely to be killed or permanently disabled by a lost-time accident. Methods for improving safety performance are proposed.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) East Side Access project (ESA) will, when it is complete, provide a new link to the east side of Manhattan from Long Island, NY that, linked with the Second Ave. Subway currently under construction, will assist in relieving overcrowding at Penn Station as well as the Lexington Ave. subway. ESA will bring Long Island Railroad (LIRR) directly from Long Island into a new station located 37 m (120 ft) beneath the existing Grand Central Terminal (GCT) located in the heart of Manhattan. It will connect the LIRR?s mainline tracks in Queens, via the existing 63rd Street Tunnel under the East River, to a new terminal constructed within, and beneath, the historic Grand Central Terminal.

One of the most energy-intensive processes for producing submicron range calcite is stirred media mill. In the present work, numerous operating parameters such as solid mass fraction, grinding media size, media filling ratio, and grinding time have been investigated using a vertical type stirred media mill. The results are evaluated on the basis of mean particle size, specific surface area, and specific energy consumption. After conducting this study, optimum experimental conditions found to be as 70% media filling ratio, 25% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. Besides, energy savings up to 22% were achieved with the choice of proper media size.

The concrete lining for a long 8.05 km (5 mi) section of New York City Water Tunnel No. 3 was cast in place. The contractor, Grow-Perini-Skanska, placed over76,841 m3 (100,505 cy) of concrete, pouring 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The concrete was dropped 204 m (670 ft) to the tunnel level, transported by rail to a concrete remixer and pump, and placed in 146.3m (480 ft) of full circle forms. Some of the many challenges include the sheer magnitude of the job, navigating through drifts, a raise and curves, dealing with ground water inflows, and placing the concrete within time limits.

Bolting solutions traditionally offered only wet drilling or dry drilling options; each with advantages and disadvantages. Joy Mining Machinery has developed a Mist Drilling System that incorporates the best of both types of drilling. Compared to wet drilling, mist drilling offers as much as a 90% reduction in water use. As a result, floor and roof conditions are tremendously improved. This offers a safer and more comfortable work environment for operators. Mist drilling can offer a significant reduction in noise levels compared to dry drilling and in recent trials, bit life has been greatly improved. Holes are cleaner and operators experience less exposure to respirable dust.

Scenario-level uncertainty is a representation of large-scale differences encountered when considering ultimate mining pits optimized over various subsets of stochastic realizations. Accounting for scenario-level uncertainty allows mine plans to be assessed against several probabilistic subsurface interpretations. Scenario-level uncertainty is found through clustering stochastic geostatistical realizations and optimizing final pits across the realizations in each cluster. Where these pits are geometrically different, plans for each scenario differ. Knowing these differences allows the value of each planning alternative to be assessed based on the value and relative probability of each scenario. These results also facilitate the use of formal decision-making frameworks for planning, leading to optimization that better represents the full statistical characterization of the deposit. An example utilizing this approach evaluates both infrastructure placement and drilling program requirements. In both cases, scenario-level uncertainty improves initial plans by limiting opportunity costs and identifying additional potential.
