Sustainability of energy supplies has been an issue of general interest for a long time. Whilst in the past the continuous productive use of natural commodities was in the fore, its compatibility with the environment and climate and ultimately also social aspects have recently gained more and more attention. Today many discussions focus on the climate compatibility of individual options to act. Fossil fuels, in particular coal and lignite, are generally challenged because coal use makes a significant contribution to global man-made CO2 emissions. The drastic increase in the consumption of fossil fuels is not explained by the fact that coal utilisation technologies are not or cannot be sustainable but rather by the growing world population and the endeavours numerous national economies trying to catch up economically. Coal is the world’s No. 1 fuel and, in the view of many experts, will keep this position also in the foreseeable future. The access to its deposits plays a significant role for the economies of the emerging countries. Consequently the aspects of energy security and economic efficiency need to be considered at eye level with climate compatibility. In Germany, however, the public acceptance of fossil fuels and of large industrial projects is in the focus of attention.

China, Mexico, Spain and Turkey are the leading producers of celestite (strontium sulfate), the most common strontium mineral. Of an estimated 510 kt (562,000 st) of celestite produced worldwide during 2004, 98 percent was produced in those countries. Deposits of strontianite (strontium carbonate), another strontium mineral, have been identified in China and Malawi. Relatively small quantities are reported from the deposit in China. Although celestite deposits occur in the United States, no domestic celestite has been mined since 1959.

The flotation response to amine collector and its adsorption on the mineral surface was studied as a function of pH and collector concentration. The flotation response increased in the order anorthite + intermediate plagih clases + albite, while adsorption of amine obeyed the Freundlich equation r = A.Cn. This adsorption is proposg to be due to a covalent bonding between the AlOH surface pups of the plagioclase altered outer layer and the amino group of the collector. Finally, the study showed thatmtial dissolution of the solid phase provides the necessary conditions for amine attachment on the mineral particles and consequent flotation.

The goal of the drill bit consumption study was to develop an equation(s) based on various components that affect bit drill wear and use the equation(s) to estimate the consumption of bits during production drilling. Drill bit data from various geographic locations were compiled and used to develop linear regression equations using the Microsoft Excel Software. Multiple drill bit consumption equations were developed and statistical analysis was used to verify the accuracy of those equations. The equations will allow mining companies to more accurately forecast drill bit consumption when evaluating new mine properties. This capability becomes increasingly beneficial to forecasting as the cost of consumables increases.

The effect of various types of structural modification on the critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and hydrophile lipophile balances (HLB) of certain surfactants has been considered. Using the concept of effective chain length for the substituted species, an index of hydrophobicity (I) has been defined. It is hoped that such an index will allow one to choose surfactants for particular purposes in a less arbitrary fashion than heretofore.

Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material's low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. When Lewis and Clark first pushed their boats up the Missouri River, Meriwether Lewis reported the presence of coal in the western states by saying in 1802 that it "burnt tolerably well and afforded but little flame or smoke but produced a hot and lasting fire". Lewis would have been amazed and bewildered at the history of coal development in this region and the more recent political-socio-economic-environmental confrontations of today. Certainly without this coal the railroads would not have readily pushed into our western states, and the progress of this region would have suffered. The coal industry has passed from a period when "coal was king" to a period of depression in the industry, but its importance is being revived. A contributing and simultaneous environmental concern has emerged in the nation and in many states during the past ten years, partly caused by newly imposed standards for sulfur content of fuels. Much of the midwest and eastern coal cannot be used because of high sulfur content, shifting attention to the low sulfur coal deposits of the western states. In the western states, lands disturbed by strip mining or even underlain by strippable coal are small compared to the total acreage, and usually mining operations are on lands not under cultivation. There are some farm lands being disturbed by surface mining, but this is often over-emphasized. In states like New Mexico and Arizona the percentage is less. The value of the minerals underlying the surface certainly must be considered along with the value of the surface, and sometimes proper reclamation following mining can result in higher ultimate usage of the land.

Two-phase (water and air) flow in a self aerated WEMCO flotation machine has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A 0.8 m3 model is considered. The flow is modeled by Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using a commercial software ANSYS-CFX5 [1]. Because of the lack of circumferential periodicity in this machine, the entire machine is modeled and unsteady simulations are conducted in the whole volume of the bulb. Uniform bubble diameter is specified, and the effects of bubble diameter are determined by conducting simulations for three diameters of 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mm. The unsteady air flow rate through the machine is predicted as an outcome of the simulations. Air volume fraction contours and velocity field in different parts of the machine are presented and discussed.

"Hydrothermal systems are a major component of the processes that shape the composition and structure of the ocean crust, providing a major pathway for the exchange of heat and elements between the Earth’s crust and oceans, and a locus for prolific biological activity on the seafloor and underlying crust. On the other hand, the structure and composition of hydrothermal systems are the result of complex interactions between heat sources, fluids, wall rocks, tectonic controls and even biological processes.Ultraslow spreading ridges, including the Southwest Indian Ridge and the Gakkel Ridge, are most remarkable end member in plate-boundary structures (Dick et al., 2003), featured with extensive tectonic amagmatic spreading and frequent exposure of peridotite and gabbro. With intensive surveys during the last decades, it was suggested that ultraslow ridges are several times more effective than faster-spreading ridges in sustaining hydrothermal activity. This increased longevity can be attributed to deep mining of heat and even exothermic serpentinisation (Baker et al., 2004).Distinct from faster spreading ridges, one characteristics of hydrothermal mineralization on seafloor in ultraslow spreading ridges, including the active Dragon Flag hydrothermal field at 49.6 degree on the Southwest Indian Ridge, is the abundant and pervasive distribution of lower temperature minerals (such as Fe-silica or silica, Mn (Fe) oxides, sepiolite, pyrite, marcasite, etc.) in the hydrothermal fields. Structures formed by lower temperature activity in active and dead hydrothermal fields can also be identified. High temperature minerals such as chalcopyrite are rare or very limited in hydrothermal chimneys at ultraslow spreading ridges. The distribution of diverse low temperature hydrothermal activity is consistence with the deep heating mechanisms and hydrothermal circulations in the complex framework of ultraslow spreading tectonics. On the other hand, deeper and more extensive mineralization at certain locations along the ultraslow spreading ridges can be reasonably presumed."

The major cost in comminution is energy consumption, which can be as high as 50% of the operating cost. Improvements in plant operations have resulted in up to a 15% reduction in energy usage (kw-hr/t). These improvements have been made through the optimization of grinding efficiency and the use of expert model-based control systems. Optimization involves the determination of the levels of the critical-operating conditions that result in the most efficient breakage of ore in the mill. These optimal levels are identified through plant/laboratory test work and through computer simulation using advanced process models. Model-based expert control achieves the maximum performance from the grinding circuit by identifying the characteristics of the ore in the mill with an optimal on-line estimator. Using this information, the control system dynamically determines the operating point that will yield the optimal performance. Two industrial applications of grinding-circuit optimization and model-based control are presented to demonstrate the power of this new technology.

Old mine workings are found throughout the Western United Sates on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and private lands. Some of these mine workings date back to the late 1800s. There may be as many as 100,000 sites on lands administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The U.S. Department of the Interior has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and western state governments to identify and prioritize these sites on Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service administered lands. This presentation will discuss the accomplishments we have made to date to clean up inactive and abandoned mine sites, focusing primarily on lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

A large underground cavern with dimensions of 25m × 175m × 49m (W×L×H) was excavated in sandstone and siltstone to house 4 units of hydropower generator and was completed in 2000. In feasibility study stage, the property of the siltstone which governs the ceiling of the cavern was questionable due to slaking phenomenon. Parameters on rock properties for design were back calculated from actual ground response measured from a trial excavation. For safety of construction, comparison between prediction and actual ground responses during excavation had proceeded. The prediction was provided by means of PHASES and PHASE2 software and the actual rock response was detected by the provided monitoring system.

"Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce the risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm in diameter, in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity of 3.6 m/s (700 fpm). Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle should be operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings agree with past respirable dust control research, providing guidance on spray selection and spray array design in ongoing efforts to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. IntroductionCoal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 µm in diameter, are deposited in the return entries of coal mines and can be reentrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal-dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions."

Gravity concentration at the Pegasus Gold/Montana Tunnels Mine, near Helena, MT, began in June 1991 when a coarse-gold-scalping circuit was commissioned. It processes a small portion of the ball-mill circulating load to reduce the risk of gold particles that are too coarse to float from advancing to flotation. The circuit also cost-effectively enhances overall gold recovery and payable gold ounces. This gravity circuit has been a major success. Since the circuit was commissioned, throughput has increased 30%. Several modifications and improvements were made during the last three years that allowed the gravity circuit to keep pace with the higher tonnage. The overall approach to gravity concentration at Montana Tunnels has always been to optimize production rather than maximize the gold ounces produced. This philosophy has now yielded a circuit expansion and relocation project. It will allow for an estimated 50% increase in gravity gold production, while significantly reducing the unit costs of production.

An intelligent supervisor using expert system tools and applied to a crushing plant has been developed with a structure based on a model of a human operator. It consists of a knowledge base containing a qualitative model of the process and a rules base with the heuristic logic used by an operator when supervising a plant. The simulation results obtained show the potential of this type of system to supervise the automatic operation of a plant. There has been very significant development in artificial intelligence over the last two decades. Within this development, two approaches can be distinguished, (Winston, 1984). The "model approach," in which the main objective is to understand and model the be¬havior of living systems. The second approach is the "engineering approach." Here, systems capable of performing tasks usually requiring human intelligence are created. As part of this latter approach, knowledge engineering and its main achievement, expert systems, have been developed. Expert systems arose from the need to incorporate the abilities of a human expert in solving realistic problems in which the conventional approach has great difficulties. The first successful applications of expert systems were in medical diagnosis, geophysics, and fault detection. However, since 1971, when Fu (1971; defined intelligent control as the inter action of artificial intelligence and automatic control, some significant developments in the use of artificial intelligence tools for process control have been achieved (Astrom, 1986; Pinto 1988; Fahrenkrog, 1988; and Porter 1987). The modern control theory has made important advances. And, although successful in some applications, it has failed to cope with the practicalities of many industrial processes. As a result, the automatic operation of a plant has been confined to a small region around a normal operating point and to periods without any great disturbance. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of accurate and structured knowledge of the processes involved. Despite this, operators applying their knowledge, experience, and a little intuition, often obtain good results controlling the plant in such situations. Considering the above, the next obvious step is to include similar reasoning capacities in a computational system. The use of belt air as an intake source at longwall operations has greatly changed over the past decades. The practical considerations for the use of belt air are controlled by a variety of factors including airflow quantity and velocity, coal methane content, methane desorption rates, coal mining rate, belt length, stopping leakage, and the number of gateroad entries. At longwall operations, the advantages and disadvantages of belt air are different for gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. During gateroad development, the use of belt air to ventilate the working section will reduce the leakage from the intake to the belt compared to the belt air being ventilated outby the working sections because of lower pressure differentials. A greater quantity of airflow will reach the last open crosscut with belt on intake than outby, given the same amount of pressure and airflow available at the mouth of the section. This paper will investigate the current ventilation practices regarding the use of belt air during gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. Operating considerations regarding air quantities and pressures to deliver the required airflow will be investigated using ventilation network modeling.

In the present study, we have investigated the conditions for the formation of bubble clusters and the effect of well-defined agitation on the stability of clusters. A specially designed cell was used in which bubble clusters could be formed at the surface of a porous block in a fluidized bed of relatively coarse hydrophobic silica particles. The clusters then rose through a flow field of known turbulent characteristics. The size of the clusters before and after passing through the turbulent zone were measured using a high speed camera. The influence of shear rate on the deformation of the bubble clusters was investigated. The results showed that the Kolmogarov microscale was much smaller than the maximum cluster size, suggesting that the breakage of the clusters was mainly due to interaction with clusters in the inertial convection sub-range.

BACKGROUND The history of the Pine Point Mine is a rich one. This property once boasted one of the largest and most profitable lead-zinc mines in Canada's long and storied mining history. The Pine Point mine used open pit technology to extract the ore, but they faced several challenges. In addition to logistics problems with haul distances and metal prices, the mine faced the challenge of a large in flow of water from the Great Slave Lake. Eventually, the Pine Point Mine was closed leaving behind a large deposit of lead-zinc ore. Following the closing of the Pint Point Mine, Tamerlane Ventures Inc. acquired this property which includes approximately 70 million tonnes of lead-zinc reserves. The initial phase of this project will concentrate on the R-190 deposit as a test site to prove their new approach for extracting the ore. The R-190 reserve is believed to have approximately 1,014,000 million tonnes of high grade ore varying from 5% to 52% combined lead-zinc. Once the pilot project proves the approach is valid, the process will be repeated in approximately 33 other ore bodies on the property. This paper is written to discuss the design process to determine the most effective means of placing production and service equipment in the same shaft. Currently the design work and the mining scheme is complete, but lead-zinc pricing has prevented Tamerlane Ventures Inc. from moving forward with the project.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to model gas compositions in underground longwall coal mine gobs to study oxygen ingress and the development of potentially explosive methane-air mixtures that may form in the gob. The scenarios studied involve various headgate and tailgate ventilation and inertization schemes and controls. In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at Colorado School of Mines have used an innovative meshing approach, allowing easy adaptation of the CFD model to adjust to a variety of bleeder and bleederless mining geometries, with gob porosity and permeability scalable over a wide range. This paper presents the methodology of the meshing and scaling approach along with recommendations for using CFD modeling in longwall gob ventilation applications. The new meshing technique was utilized to evaluate the function of a back return in a progressively sealed gob. The back return was successful in maintaining sufficient oxygen concentrations in the tailgate corner of the longwall face.

The pyrometallurgical industry plays a vital role in producing metals for our modern life. With growing demand of metals and declining grade of mineable ore, innovations become critical for many mining companies. It is necessary to conduct a review of recent improvements to the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, process and equipment improvements, and computer-based modeling/simulations. Many of those innovations tend to be applied to wider metals, and not be restricted by a specific metal. Therefore, we tried to cover the wide applications of many improvements to wider range of metals to reflect this trend. The challenge of a lack of robust measurement techniques under high-temperature conditions within a furnace hinders optimization of a pyrometallurgical process. Some future opportunities in the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, computer modeling, and processes and equipment have also been outlined and discussed.
