Outcrop barrier pillars serve to keep mine personnel and the public safe from sudden uncontrolled flows of water accumulated in active and abandoned underground mine workings. When an outcrop barrier fails, the result is an outbreak of water to the surface and is termed as blowout. Mine blowouts are associated with above-drainage mines and can occur through the coal outcrop and sealed portals. A blowout is often catastrophic, a threat to the people on the surface living or working in the path of a potentially large flood. In addition, blowouts can destroy homes, cause landslides and severe erosion and release pollution and acid mine drainage. This paper provides guidance on the planning, design, evaluation and inspection of barriers to address the problem of mine blowouts associated with above-drainage coal mines.

When I was originally asked to give this talk, I had certain preconceived ideas of the mining industry's reaction to Operations Research. It seemed at the time to be a rather simple task to collect these ideas for presentation here today. Jotting down these notions, I became concerned that overexposure to this activity called OR perhaps had clouded my outlook on what was actually being done on a nation-wide scale. I felt, to have a better cross section, a questionnaire of current industrial activity was in order. I solicited the response of some 75 mining companies varying in sizes and operating characteristics, and I am pleased to report that the response was good. I received answers from 51. The questionnaire was intended to measure the degree to which their concerns were actually engaged in OR efforts. With all due respect to the people who were so gracious as to answer the questionnaire, I feel that there is a tremendous misconception as to the designed purpose of OR. This is not to imply that there are no active OR groups in the mining industry. But by in large, the majority of the companies sampled appear to be somewhat confused as to what OR really is.

Blind shaft drilling equipment has not changed substantially since the 1970s. Since it resides in a niche market between conventional shaft sinking and raise boring, the relatively small demand has resulted in some stagnation of development. In the 1990s the technology found a larger foothold in foundation and deep piling work for civil construction. WIRTH GmbH from Erkelenz, Germany has been servicing this market for many years with pile top drilling rigs and tools. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. recently entered into an agreement with WIRTH to develop a new generation of large diameter blind drilling equipment more specifically aimed at mining needs. The, recently completed, DHI-240 is the first rig to apply the most recent technology. This machine made its commercial debut in the fall of 2008. The Wachovia Headquarters and Arts and Cultural Campus project in Charlotte, NC includes a 1.5 million square foot, 48-story office tower, two museums, an Afro-American cultural center and a 1,200 seat theater for the performing arts. Public access to the Cultural Campus is through two pedestrian tunnels constructed under city streets connecting to parking garages. The 5.7 m wide by 4.7 m high mined tunnels were procured through a design-build contract. The tunnels were designed as initial/final shotcrete linings with a sprayed water barrier sandwiched between layers of shotcrete. In addition, the mix design was supplemented with a cementitious admixture to develop internal water resistant properties in the shotcrete.

Underground or surface mining is only the first stage in the ore mining process. Once the ore is mined, it is transported to the surface for further processing. Generally, this is done to extract the particular metal or other component of the ore that has commercial value in its purified form. In its raw state, there are typically between 4 and 7 g/t (0.12 and 0.2 oz/st) of valuable material from rock mined. Once on the surface, the ore is crushed and milled in order to obtain smaller rock particles and to expose the minerals that contain the desired metal or component. Mixing the milled ore with water, a process known as ?froth flotation,? can be employed. This technique consists of a series of tanks, or ?cells? through which the process liquid flows. To obtain the maximum recovery, the milling and flotation process will often be repeated a second time. An increase between 100 and 1,000 g/t (2.9 and 29 oz/st) of rock following this stage of the process is typical. Efficient recovery is key to maintaining a profitable mining operation. The measurement and control of the froth flotation process is vital.

A deep-seabed integrated mining system, which consists of four subsystems such as riser pipe, buffer, flexible riser, and tracked vehicles, is presented in Figure 1. "This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2015 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) (Charlottesville, VA) database and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry, and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry.Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2015 as compiled by the USGS; and regional events that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2015 for 24 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys and are based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals, (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash), and other commodities (diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rareearth elements (REE), tantalum, tungsten and uranium).USGS data compilations and analyses are based on information provided by USGS mineral commodity and country specialists, as well as industry contacts and published trade journals. The USGS data summarize exploration site data collected for more than 80 minerals and materials, with a focus on base metals, diamond and precious metals. The USGS analyzed available information to assess the level of exploration activity in 2015 and to report trends in mineral exploration activity for the period 2005 through 2015. These analyses identify where mineral exploration is occurring by commodity and region and the intensity of activity that is taking place in each region for selected mineral commodities, and determines those factors that most affect changes in exploration activity."

Had the blank on the Abstract form been sufficiently spacious a more appropriate title for this paper would be: Neogene Tectonism, Magmatic Activity and Hydrothermal Precious Metal Mineralization in Anatolian Turkey; an Analog with the Basin and Range Province of the Western U.S.? Like the alternative title no thing in Turkey is simple. Its history is long and convolute; its culture fascinating; its metallogeny diverse and its geology very complex. This paper will focus only on the geology of western' Anatolia and the precious metal potential of this third of Turkey. The argument is in the article but to save the reader time and suspense I'll put my conclusions up front- the potential is great and the possibilities exciting.

A qualitative test program was sponsored jointly by the University of Alaska and Eriez Magnetics, in order to study placer gold nugget recovery using an eddy-current separator. Various gold nuggets from Alaska, ranging from 6.4 mm to 63.5 mm in size, were tested. All testing was performed using an Eriez Laboratory ESC, Model REA, fitted with 2000 gauss, surface field strength magnetic rotor. The belt speed was set to 91 meters per minute and the rotor speed was set to 2500 rpm in the forward direction. The splitter was adjusted to just reject the largest pieces of rock that measured an average 76 mm x102 mm x 127 mm. Based on the results of this limited test work, it can be recommended to placer gold mine operators, that Eriez Magnetics ECS technology is a viable and practical concentration technology for coarse gold recovery. Silver and platinum were also tested.

Commodity currency intrigues most of us because of the problems it offers to solve for the Third and the First Worlds. What problems might be solved, if commodity currency were to be adopted in the Third World? That is really the question we are probing here right now. It would take a while to think through all their subtle consequences of this question, but, off the top, it might well have at least three important impacts. Most important of these to this audience is relief from unfair Third World competition. Second, it might well liberate Third World economies from financial indebtedness to the First World and give them freedom from the liquidity limitations. The third benefit is that it might help relieve World trade tensions. All three benefits are interrelated. We could start our speculations on the application of commodity currency from anyone of these starting points. But let us use the starting point most important to you, unfair competition to the U.S. mining industry. From there we might wind up with some thoughts on things you, yourselves, can do to improve things.

Ghana’s physiographic and geologic features are the basis for its long mining history. The Gold Coast colony has been a significant producer of gold. The gold of the Akan forest (Ghana) was a terminus for caravans that plied Saharan trade routes. Now it also produces significant quantities of manganese, bauxite, and diamonds In addition, the country produces kaolinite, silica for glass, salt, and both aggregate and dimensioned stone. Most secondary minerals are consumed locally but some amounts do find international markets. Ghana revised the mining laws and regulations in 1986. These revised laws dramatically increased gold production and improved the country’s economy. The success of these laws spawned imitators in other African states such as Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Representatives of these countries claim Ghana was their model. Environmental regulations exist but an intensive adversarial atmosphere is lacking. Ghana has also offered the mining industry incentives like accelerated depreciation rates and exemption from import duties on related supplies and capital equipment. The country has also pursued an aggressive policy to restore the nation’s business infrastructure.

This paper describes the development of a life of mine schedule (LOM) for one of the world?s largest known sedimentary Copper-Cobalt districts located in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A particular feature of the Tenke Fungurume LOM schedule is the considerable number of pits/phases for scheduling, each competing to provide the best ore available to a capacity constrained process facility. This paper discusses the main scheduling objectives and constraints, data pre-processing as a scheduling aid, the mine scheduling approach, and results and conclusions.

Preliminary recommendations for the Upper Northwest Interceptor 1&2 specified installation of reinforced concrete pipe using pipe-jacking methods. However, a larger one-pass tunnel constructed using precast segmental lining would provide additional storage volume. The risk of encountering unexpected conditions or events and the resulting cost impacts could differ significantly for these two options. A probabilistic life-cycle cost analysis of these alternatives was performed. This paper discusses the construction alternatives considered, the risk assessment methodology used to evaluate these alternatives, the input parameters and risk factors used in this analysis, and the recommended project which is currently being constructed.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the former U.S. Bureau ofMines (USBM) have given a significant effort over the past four decades in researching and developing engineering controls and interventions to reduce mine workers’ dust exposures during the bagging and palletizing of industrial minerals. Workers performing manual bagging and palletizing of 50- to 100-pound bags typically have some of the highest dust exposures of all workers at mining and mineral processing operations. This paper will provide an overview of available dust control technologies for bagging operations and present the findings of a recent case study that was conducted at four different industrial sand operations to identify the current types of bagging and palletizing technologies being used and to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing workers’ exposures to respirable crystalline silica dust. An evaluation will also be performed to determine if further reductions in respirable dust levels can be achieved by incorporating additional modifications or improvements into the existing technology.

Once every three years the eyes of the construction and mining industry?s turn to Munich, Germany for the bauma trade fair and exhibition. From April 19-25, Messe München International (MMI) will host the 29th edition of this massive show that, despite the recent recession and global financial struggles, has grown yet again. The show, which is completely booked, will take place on a record 555,000 m2 (5.9 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. More than 3,000 exhibitors are expected to make use of this event. To prepare for the show that highlights some of the largest and most impressive construction and mining equipment in the world, Messe München began working months in advance on getting the infrastructure on the open-air site ready, in time for the arrival of the gigantic machinery exhibits, which started to arrive in March. Part of the preparations include a new entrance at the northwest corner of the exhibition center that was built to regulate visitor flow better. This should help with bauma considering that in 2007 more than 500,000 visitors passed through the gates. ?Although in 2010 the construction machinery sector in many markets worldwide will be recovering only slowly from the recession, we are pleased to report that we are seeing strong demand for exhibition space. This shows that exhibitors regard participation in the world?s leading trade fair bauma as a must, although many are at present having to make cuts in their advertising and trade-fair budgets. We have been particularly surprised by the strong demand for space from exhibitors from markets like China, India and Turkey. The fair is fully booked and many more companies are on the waiting list,? said Eugen Egetenmeir, managing director of Messe München. More than 50 percent of the exhibitors at bauma 2010 come from countries outside of Germany. While the show?s primary focus is on the construction section, it is not as if the mining sector will be difficult to find. With some of the largest equipment in world on display in section C2 (Fig. 1), the mining industry is sure to be well-represented.

Compared to conventional fully ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, jet fans can offer a number of advantages for control of smoke during fire emergencies and dilution of diesel engine exhaust products in vehicular and rail tunnels. The success of jet fan applications is the result of a balance between the temperature de-rating of the fan, buoyancy forces and the installation momentum transfer efficiency. This paper provides a case study of a unique application of vertically-mounted jet fans in ventilation shafts used to provide both emergency ventilation and pollution control for an overbuild created by the construction of a series of commercial high-rise residential buildings over a portion of an existing passenger rail line. A detailed evaluation of a set of shafts for one building is presented, including a discussion of the calculation methods used to estimate the required jet fan capacity and the results of the subsequent numerical analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics to simulate the performance of the jet fans during train car fire emergencies.

The Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, treats wastewater generated by over three million people. A new tunnel and ocean outfall is being considered to meet future hydraulic demands and provide long-term redundancy for the Districts? existing tunnels, portions of which were constructed as early as the 1930s. The detailed process used to evaluate the feasibility of various tunnel and out-fall locations is described. Challenges include a geologic profile with mixed face and squeezing ground conditions; high water pressures; active fault crossings; gassy and contaminated ground conditions; and liquefaction, slope stability, and lateral spreading concerns in the area of the riser and diffusers.

The Homestake Mine included the open cut and underground workings up to 2,484 m (8,150 ft) deep. The mine ceased mining activities in December 2001 after 125 years of operation. Pumping from the underground workings continued for 18 more months until June 10, 2003. Homestake had completed a comprehensive hydrologic evaluation on post-closure underground flooding prior to the shutdown of pumping. After closure, the mine was selected by the National Science Foundation as the site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). An interim laboratory facility will be set at the 1478 m (4850 ft) Level. The final facility will be set at the 2256 m (7400 ft) Level or deeper. Pumping from the underground workings began on June 5, 2008 by the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA). During the period of June 2008 through March 2009, the pumping rate increased from 41 L/s (650 gpm) to 81 L/s (1,290 gpm) with an average rate of 60 L/s (950 gpm). As a result, the water level had been lowered more than 95 m (310 ft). It was found that the observed rebound and later decline to date is in close agreement with the model projections. Because of this, the authors of this paper reject claims of a lack of sufficient measurement devices in place and a lack of understanding of the hydrologic system at the Homestake Mine prior to shutdown of pumping in 2003 (Davis et al, 2009). Furthermore, it is believed that this validated model can serve as a useful tool for the SDSTA to manage future underground dewatering for the DUSEL operation. This paper evaluates the hydrologic conditions in the Homestake Mine area and projects the post-closure groundwater rebound and decline due to DUSEL pumping.

Differential reduction and expansion or shrinkage of hematite under the influence of intimately associated foreign oxides may be a source of stress formation and sinter degradation during blast furnace reduction. To study specific effects, synthetically pre-pared hematite powder evenly doped with 1% by weight of several elements present as oxides, was pressed into tablets and sintered at high temperature prior to reduction. Continuous thermo-gravimetric and dilatometric analyses were per-formed on the sintered tablets as these were being subjected to reduction under simulated blast furnace time/temperature/gas composition conditions up to 1183 K. These findings were coupled with observations on the microstructure of tablets removed from various stages of the reduction process.

Coal is currently cleaned with the minimum of size reduction, fine particle processing, recovery, and tailings disposal are major problems. Adequate water resources are not always available. For example, two thirds of China's coal is located in arid areas. Hence, dry separation provides an alternative approach. Of the dry coal separation methods available, air dense-medium fluidized beds have been used to separate 50~6mm coal efficiently. However, excessive bubbling and back mixing of the separated solids in the air-dense media fluidized bed causes the high lower size limit of 6mm for the feed material, this affecting the preparation efficiency. Based on prior study on air-fluidized dense media for 6~50mm coal preparation, this paper presents methods and test results on the fine coal dry classification, static electricity beneficiation of 0~0.5mm coal, and magnetically stabilized fluidized beds for separating 0.5~6mm coal.
