Dynatec Mining Limited contracted to sink a lS00 metre (4960 ft.) concrete lined shaft for Falconbridge Nickel Mines in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The shaft is 6.3 metres (20.S ft.) in diameter inside the concrete lining and is equipped with steel furnishings. Dynatec used the owner supplied 4.6 metre (l5 ft.) diameter double-drum hoist to sink the shaft with 12.S tonne buckets for muck removal and 4 cubic metre concrete buckets for concrete placement. One of the unique features of the shaft sinking operation is the use of a four-boom electric hydraulic drill jumbo permanently mounted in the shaft sinking stage. This paper will describe the performance obtained with the electric hydraulic drilling equipment and the high capacity muck removal and concreting equipment.

Booster fans in underground coal mines are often located using the concept of a neutral point. Normally, intake airways are maintained at higher absolute pressure than return airways, so air leaks from intake to return. By adding a significant pressure force to a region of a ventilation system, booster fans installed in a return airway can increase the pressure in the return so that air leaks from return to intake. This is commonly referred to as recirculation. The neutral point occurs at the location in the system where the pressure difference between the intake and the return airway(s) is zero and at this point there is no leakage or recirculation. Ideally, placing a booster fan near the neutral point minimizes leakage and recirculation; however, in practice the position of the neutral point is not static and it changes as the ventilation system parameters change. This paper presents a study of how changes in the system parameters affect the location of the neutral point in a model coal mine ventilation system. First the effects of booster fan pressure and location on the neutral point are evaluated. Next the effect of increasing mine distance, and therefore mine resistance, on the location of the neutral point and the magnitude of recirculation is evaluated.

In 1976, a decision was made to install a conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 miles) from the new Eisenhower Partnership Mine to Twin Buttes. The system, supplied and installed by Cable Belt Limited, of England, represents a radical departure from conventional conveyor systems. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes while the belt acts only as the carrying medium. Features of the system are a single 2240 kw (3000 hp) drive and a 60° angle bend. Construction was completed in two years. Full production was attained after several months' operation.

Cable shovel requires continuous monitoring through excavation to achieve reliability, longevity and economic usage. The operating environment and the stress and deformation fields on the front-end assembly must continually be monitored to avoid random fatigue failure. In this paper, the authors advance frontiers of cable shovel reliability through real-time stress and deformation monitoring during excavation. Cable shovel boom stress and deformation analysis are developed using a combination of flexible and rigid body approach. A virtual prototype is developed to simulate the cable shovel excavation in oil sands and to examine the motion, stress and local deformation of the boom. A numerical example is used examine cable shovel boom durability using stress and deformation fields simulation. The results show that stress and deformation are large around the joint between the upper body and the boom. The simulation of the effect of material properties on boom deformation shows that the deformation is larger in hard formation than in soft formation. The study provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

Australia’s Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) has achieved several successes during its first three years of operation. This initiative was developed through the Minerals Council of Australia, in conjunction with three partner universities involved in mining engineering education. The partner universities are the University of New South Wales (UNSW); Curtin University, the West Australian School of Mines (WASM); and the University of Queensland (UQ). The collaboration between these partner universities and industry has led to the development of shared course material, cross-institutional teaching arrangements, and the development of a number of flexible, distance-based delivery programs. This article then discusses future initiatives. Importantly, the challenge is the future initiative planned to cement this collaboration by the formation of a “virtual” national school of mining engineering: Mining Education Australia (MEA). This will provide a common third and fourth year program to all three universities beginning in 2007. The common program will involve innovative teaching and learning arrangements, greater student exchange potential and a more significant input by industry into the education process.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the responses of a prototype smoke detector and a commercially available photoelectric smoke detector to smoke particles generated from various combustion sources. The prototype smoke detector combines optical scattering measurements with ionization chamber measurements in order to reduce/eliminate nuisance alarms due to the presence of airborne dusts or diesel exhaust particles. The commercially available smoke detector is designed for use in harsh environments where airborne dust represents a major problem due both to nuisance alarms and detector contamination. In the experiments, the responses of the two detectors were measured when exposed to smoke particles from the exhaust of a diesel engine and from a variety of fire sources, including wood, coal, styrene butadiene rubber, and No. 2 diesel fuel. For the solid fuels, data were obtained for both smoldering and flaming combustion. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results as they apply to early-warning fire sensors capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by either airborne dust or the products produced from diesel engines. Subsequent to these laboratory experiments, six smoke detectors were installed in an underground limestone mine for further testing and evaluation. This thermomechanical analysis used the finite element method to investigate the behavior of crushed salt backfill in a waste disposal room situated in a salt dome repository. The first of two objectives was to determine the transient temperature rise and degree of thermomechanical consolidation that occur in the backfill as a function of drillhole depths. The second objective involved the evaluation of closure due to salt creep of unlined emplacement drillholes and the determination of pressure on steel sleeve liners in the drillholes should liners become necessary for canister retrieval. The retrievability period was considered to extend for 25 years after waste emplacement. The canisters were assumed to contain ten-year old high level waste with a thermal output of 4.3 kW at the time of emplacement.

The lean, but extensive iron ore deposits of the Dunderland Valley north of Mo i Rana, Norway, is the raw material for the Rana Mines which is a division of the state owned steel mill A/S Norsk Jernverk. Activities for the exploitation of the orebodies were commenced in 1902 by the English Dunderland Iron Ore Company. During its operating period the company constructed a total of two large scale concentrating plants. The activities were strongly marked by technical problems and labor disputes. Thus actual production was limited to the years 1904-1908, 1928-1931 and 1937-1939. During these periods a total of 1.9 million tons of crude ore was mined and 0.6 million tons of concentrates produced for export. The present plant commenced operations in late fall of 1964. Up to and including 1976 about 26.6 million tons of crude have been put through the concentrating plant and about 10.7 million tons of concentrate produced.

Site-specific blast vibration prediction can be more accurate than using a universal prediction equation. Vibrations from 37 blasts were monitored using three seismographs. Data analysis showed that square root, cube root, and site-specific scaling predicted ground motion with equal reliability. Imprecise prediction is caused by geologic and blast variability, particularly, inaccurate delay times. Vibrations at some mines were consistently lower or higher than vibrations predicted from US Bureau of Mines (USBM) equations. Vibration restrictions based on USBM studies could then be too conservative or too lenient. Predominant vibration frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz, but several blasts had significant energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases, energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to delay intervals.

Building indicators that respond to all stakeholders' needs is a time-consuming and complex exercise, with certain questions still unsolved. The aim of the current three-year research project, carried out in partnership between BRGM’s Mineral Resources Division and C3ED, is to propose a top-down / bottom-up indicators building methodology that combines conception and coordination methods and a participative approach. The tool-design phase is based partly on a comparative analysis of existing international initiatives according to different criteria (objective, observation scale, framework, etc.). The study of two African mining projects will provide the opportunity to confront the conceptual aspects with reality in the field. Careful consideration of the participants’ suggestions will result in a set of indicators that can be easily understood and adopted by all stakeholders. The final objective is to measure the impact of a mining site on a local, regional and national sustainable development frame, throughout the full life cycle of a mine.

This paper is a companion to, and amplification of, the ?History? section of the 2014 version of the SME Guide for Reporting Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves (SME Guide). The need for the careful examination and evaluation of mineral deposits has long been recognized. In the book De Re Metallica, Georgius Agricola noted, ?Moreover, a prudent owner, before he buys shares, ought to go to the mine and carefully examine the nature of the vein, for it is very important that he should be on his guard lest fraudulent sellers of shares should deceive him? (1556, p.29). Agricola further stated, ?Now a miner, before he begins to mine the veins, must consider seven things, namely: the situation, the conditions, the water, the roads, the climate, the right of ownership and the neighbors? (1556, p. 30). The elements of Agricola?s seven things, much expanded, are incorporated into the 2014 SME Guide. As reflected in this quotation, veins were the primary concern of mining until 20th century technology permitted bulk mining techniques. The need for standardization of reserve descriptions arose along with the development of western mining in the United States and the concurrent development of mining engineering and mining geology as professions. By the turn of the century, debate about terminology of various classes of reserves was in full swing. Herbert Hoover noted in 1909 (p. 16-17), ?The old terms ?ore in sight? and ?profit in sight? have been of late years subject to much malediction on the part of engineers because these expressions have been so badly abused by the charlatans of mining in attempts to cover the flights of their imaginations. A large part of Volume I of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy has been devoted to heaping infamy on these terms, yet not only have they preserved their places in professional nomenclature, but nothing has been found to supersede them. ?Some general term is required in daily practice to cover the available field of visible ore, and if the phrase ?ore in sight? be defined, it will be easier to teach the layman its proper use than to abolish it. In fact, substitutes are becoming as badly abused as the originals ever were. All convincing expressions will be misused by somebody.? Hoover (1909) noted that the common terms at the time were: ? Positive ore or ore developed: Ore exposed on four sides in blocks of a prescribed size. ? Ore blocked out: Ore exposed on three sides within a reasonable distance of each other. ? Probable ore or ore developing: Ore exposed on two sides, ? Possible ore or ore expectant: Ore in whole or in part below or beyond the range of vision. Hoover stated that these, and similar terms, overlapped and had the difficulty of failing to account properly for geologic variation in metal distribution beyond the exposed face. Certainly assuming extension of values along a vein is reasonable, but how far? Also, these definitions are for vein deposits, not all types of deposits are in veins. Hoover (1909, p. 19), therefore, defined the following terms. ? Proved ore: Ore where there is practically no risk in failure of continuity. ? Probable ore: Ore where there is some risk, yet warrantable justification for assumption of continuity. ? Prospective ore: Ore that cannot be included in the above classes, nor definitely known or stated in any terms of tonnage.

Introduction The Cove gold-silver deposit is located in Lander County, NV about 50 km (30 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit is in the north-central part of the Fish Creek Mountains within the McCoy mining district. Gold was first discovered in the McCoy district in 1914 by Joseph H. McCoy (Vanderburg, 1939). From 1928 to the early 1930s, minor production occurred from shallow underground workings. Total gold production was less than 311 kg (10,000 oz; Stager, 1977). The district was inactive until the mid-1960s when it was explored by Bear Creek Mining, Summa Corp., Houston Oil and Minerals Corp., Gold Fields, and Tenneco Minerals. Tenneco began a detailed reevaluation of the McCoy deposit in the fall of 1984. Tenneco's decision to place the deposit into production was based on a geological reserve of 8.7 t (280,000 oz) of gold (Kuyper, 1987). Subsequent exploration and development drilling of the McCoy skarn deposit has more than doubled the mineable skarn reserves to 19 t (615,000 oz) of gold. In September 1985, Tenneco began development work on the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The project is an open-pit, heap leach mine. The first gold was poured in April 1986. Echo Bay Mines acquired Tenneco's precious metals properties in October 1986. The mining operation and district exploration started by Tenneco is continuing under the Echo Bay's ownership. The Cove deposit was discovered in January 1987 and production began in February 1988. The deposit will begin as an open-pit, heap leach operation. It will be converted into an open-pit and underground mine with a 9-kt (10,000-stpd) mill. Geologic setting The Cove gold-silver deposit is situated on the east flank of the Fish Creek Range. Surface elevations range from 1460 to 1680 m (4800 to 5500 ft). The deposit is 1.6 km (1 mile) northeast of the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The Cove deposit is hosted by the Augusta Sequence of Triassic age. Three formations of the sequence are mineralized at the Cove. In ascending order they are the Favret, Panther Canyon, and Augusta Mountain formations. The Favret formation is a gray, locally silty limestone that is commonly fossiliferous. The base of the formation is not exposed. Exposed and drilled intervals are more than 60 m (200 ft) thick. Conformably overlying the Favret formation is the Panther Canyon formation. This formation is 215 m (700 ft) thick and consists of a siliclastic and carbonate sequence of conglomerate, quartzite (sandstone), mudstone, limestone, and dolomite. On Feb. 16, 2012, the Polish coal mining company Lubelski Wegiel Bogdanka S.A. set the world record for daily production from a plow-equipped longwall, with an output of 24.4 kt (26,900 st) of coal from a single face. The company commissioned the first Cat longwall system at its Bogdanka Mine, near Lublin in eastern Poland, in March 2010 and within six months had raised the bar to nearly 17 kt/d (18,700 stpd) of cut coal. Since then, Bogdanka has continued to increase its daily output with a plow face that began mining in the new 7/VII/385 panel last October, taking the world record to new levels. In addition to the record output achievement, the plow face advanced more than 27 m (89 ft) at a 1.63-m- (5.3-ft-) cutting height. ?We thought this achievement would be impossible for any shearer in seam heights as low as this,? said Zbigniew Stopa, vice president of Bogdanka.

his summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2011 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents [ ] analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2011 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

In the 2000 page Handbook of Mineral Dressing by A. F. Taggart, the subject of material or metallurgical balances is covered in only six pages of eve-straining type. Although Taggart's work was compiled before 1945, and there has been significant progress since then in most areas of mineral processing, the practicing metallurgist's approach to metallurgical balances remains exactly the same as described in those six pages. There are several portions of Taggart's text appropriate to introduce the subject of this paper which I would like to quote: "Milling Calculations. Computations of per¬formance in milling are complicated by the fact that it is a continuous rather than a batch operation, that the quantities of solid materials handled are large and usually mixed with water, hence difficult or impos¬sible to weigh. Fortunately it is possible to determine many facts concerning perfor¬mance without knowing weights, if the value of various constituents is known in some common unit, e.g., the content of some par¬ticular metal or mineral, or of water, or some ingredient soluble therein, or of par¬ticles of a particular size or falling within some particular size range, or the like."

INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada's maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. Geothermal heat might become an important fuel for several reasons: (1) To substitute for other scarce and critical fuels. (2) Because it may be less costly to the user than alternate fuels. (3) Because its production may be more profitable than production of other fuels. (4) Or for a number of other more or less non-economic reasons such as convenience or because of less environmental impact. In competition with conventional and other non-conventional fuels, geothermal heat must score well on one or more of those points. This study first considers projections of energy needs in several United States economic sectors and the technical possibility of geothermal heat substituting for other fuels in those sectors. Then, reported and projected costs of energy from geothermal heat are compared with costs of other fuels to show the relative costs of fuels in several economic sectors. Relative costs are reported from a sample of real and hypothetical geothermal projects. The actual cost of energy will vary with each application and the particular circumstances of each geographic location.

The recycling of metal resources in mining influenced water (MIW) requires a paradigm shift from within the mine water treatment industry. The potential to recover zinc for beneficial use in the micronutrient fertilizer industry was investigated through a survey of zinc micronutrient fertilizer representatives. An application of the findings to a case study of the Argo Tunnel influent MIW was then implemented. It was concluded that the potential to beneficially reuse MIW residuals in fertilizers exists; the current process sequences of treatment will need to be modified if metal recycling is to be prioritized.

Using an approach based on the theory of similitude, the author develops a general equation and related concepts that provide new insights to an old problem. The load-bearing capacity (strength) of a square, rectangular, or cylindrical prism of a brittle material such as rock, coal, or concrete is expressed as the mathematical product of a size effect, a shape effect, and a function of the mechanical properties (deformability, cleat/joint spacing, and friction) of the pillar, roof and floor materials. Through an application of multivariate statistical analysis, the results of assorted tests and observations of failed pillars can be combined into a fundamental scaling equation, which provides a unified, consistent approach to the estimation of mine pillar strength. The form of the equation is sufficiently general to be able to incorporate refinements in the characterization of the basis factors, as they become available through future experimentation and analysis.
