This paper describes the allure of diamonds over time and highlights the magic and mystery of famous diamonds. Consideration is given to the effectiveness of marketing in the diamond industry. It is concluded that diamonds are held as cherished possessions, valued far above their real market price, retained as valued heirlooms, and widely used as a form of highly liquid currency. In order to sustain value, both from an investment and jewellery perspective, demand has been stimulated to keep pace with growing global supply while the illusion that ?diamonds are forever? has been fostered to ensure that most diamonds, once sold, do not re-enter the market.

The choice of the appropriate delivery process for a project is often not adequately thought about. The industry needs to be prepared to break its preconceived mind-sets on delivery procedures. Industry should also be prepared, on a project by project basis, to commit to a critical review as to how the assessment and then selection of the best procurement method can best optimize the project outcome for both client and contractor. Conventional standards and biased reliances and experienced based preferences should be challenged. To achieve this requires a paradigm shift in attitude to both the process of tendering and the evaluation of tenders. Tender and contracting practices are dynamic and have moved away from solely cost based assessments. Tendering contracts arise imposing changed duties upon owners. Traditional contract delivery models have shifted, reflected in part by the trend towards relationship contracting. The categories of contract options are not closed. Many are but hybrids of other time-tested models. This paper considers options available for any brownfield or greenfield project. The principles outlined are translatable to supply, upgrade, operation and maintenance arrangements.

The utilization of blast furnace and BOF slags has long traditions and well-known applications in the building and road construction industries and in soil conditioning. The starting point for product development has been the basic physico-chemical properties of slags. This development has led to the almost 100% utilization of blast furnace slags and also considerable amounts of steel slags. While new methods and applications are continuously being looked for and developed in order to recycle and utilize all types of slag, there is at the same time an increasing debate over the exact nature of the slags, whether they are products or waste material, and whether they should be considered substances or preparations. These questions have emerged as a consequence of the environmental effects of the slags and current environmental legislation. The environmental effects of slags can be seen to be both beneficial and less beneficial. There is no doubt about their benefits in the road construction industry, as they allow significant savings in terms of natural materials and in transportation. It is also a known fact that using slags as fertilizers and in the cement industry leads to reduction in CO2emissions. The less favourable effects are the possible harmful emissions into the soil and groundwater. In this paper we describe the properties of slag products and their environmental effects according to investigations carried out in Finland. The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10 November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located, and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

Manganese nodule, available in ocean beds, is a potential resource of the future for copper, nickel and cobalt. Recovering only these metals, containing less than 3% by weight, will result in the generation of large amount of residue. In addition to the material losses, several environmental and ecological problems arise out of this. The present study has been aimed at reducing the environmental and ecological problems associated with massive generation of this residue together with utilization of the resources. Presence of ~ 20% manganese and ~16% silicon in the residue has prompted us to check its suitability as a raw material for silicomanganese production. Lower manganese content and lower Mn/Fe ratio of the residue than that required for silicomanganese production has been corrected in this study by suitable blending. The efficacy of blending and its thermodynamic aspects using FACTSAGE software are discussed. The studies conducted indicate viability of bulk utilisation of the residue through silicomanganese production and thereby reducing the burden on environment to a great extent.

Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

Quartz mica schist collected from Nathpa-Jhakri Hydropower Project, Himachal Pradesh, North India is tested under triaxial loading using a servo-controlled loading system. Complete stress-strain-volume change behaviour including post peak softening behaviour of the samples, are presented. Strength and deformation parameters are given. A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of technology to stoping systems. Technology, because for the past 100 years the South African narrow reef mining industry has battled to control working costs in a labour-intensive industry. Stoping systems, because it is the stoping method and methodology which is at the heart of the mining system. Introduce a more efficient stoping system and the mining system will look after itself. The technology applied to stoping over the past 100 years can be categorized as follows: ?The introduction of pneumatic rockdrills early this century, the cumbersome rig mounted units being replaced by smaller, lighter hand-held units which were then made easier to use with the addition of an air leg ?Scraper winches to replace gravity and shovels to move rock both in the face and the gullies were first introduced in the late 1920s ?Hydraulic props as a support method arrived in the1960s ?Some people argue that tungsten carbide inserts were equally important. There have been a number of attempts to introduce different technologies into stoping, the most recent being trackless equipment. Where the stoping layout suits the technology it has been successful. There have been too many instances where a technology has been installed because it is fashionable. At the end of the day the outcome from change in the stoping systems has to be safer and more profitable mining systems. It is the contention of the author that change is only likely to be effective if it is supported by the introduction and application of appropriate technology.

Analysis for pillar extraction potential (A-PEP) is an intelligent tool, which could be used as a preliminary output indicator when considering the secondary extraction of regional support pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa. The safe and economic extraction of underground coal pillars is of paramount significance and importance to the South African coalmining industry to ensure continuity of supply of this fossil fuel. Pillar extraction practices in South Africa have been responsible a significant proportion of safety and fatality statistics in relation to its relative output (less than 5 per cent of total South African coal production) and, as a result, research was undertaken in local pillar extraction operations and extended to similar operations in New South Wales, Australia to assess a way forward for pillar extraction in South Africa. It was found that, although little in the way of new technologies has emerged in this field in the recent past, significant contributions could be made in the field of risk analysis to obtain a generic design methodology for pillar extraction in South Africa. The resultant A-PEP tool to assess pillar extraction potential is based on certain physical, risk and economic factors, which combine to indicate operational success in terms of economic, health and safety attributes. At the time of A-PEP?s development there was alack of operating underground coal pillar extraction operations, which made it difficult to validate its applicability. Since then, however, A-PEP has been successfully tested and validated against two unique underground coal pillar operations, which is the discussion of this paper. One operation is situated in the Witbank coalfield and is extracting pillars, which are 20 years old and at a depth of 80 metres below surface, while the other operation is situated in the Highveld coalfield-which is extracting 6 month-old-pillars underneath a massive dolerite sill at a depth of 220 metres. A-PEP has shown that its predictive nature is consistent the workings at both operations, irrespective of their unique conditions, and as such it can be successfully used as a mine planning tool. The A-PEP mine planning tool thus represents a positive step toward an integrated approach to underground coal pillar extraction when considering legal and operational aspects, which could form the basis for legislative guidelines when considering the future of pillar extraction in South Africa.

Mining can adversely affect water quality and poses a significant risk to South Africa?s water resources. Proactive management of environmental impacts is required from the outset of mining activities in order to reduce this risk. Major strides have been made over the last 7 to 8 years, by both the Department of Water Affairs & Forestry (DWAF) and the mining industry, in developing strategies and management plans for the effective management of water within the industry. This has largely been achieved through the development of joint structures where problems have been discussed and addressed through cooperation. This process, which was started around 1991, has continued through to the present time. The mining sector management strategy has been developed at a number of different levels as follows: ?A detailed Management Plan, that sets out strategic objectives, broad strategies and functional and organizational arrangements. ?Operational Guidelines, that define and document specific operational procedures. ?Technical Guidelines, that define and document best practices for pollution prevention and impact minimization from mining operations. The Technical Guidelines consist of Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) and Regulations.

High-pressure waterjet technology is proposed as an alternative tool for selective underground mining of high-grade ore sections in stratiform orebodies showing a preferred ?bottom? or ?top? enrichment such as the Witwatersrand reefs and the Bushveld Complex platiniferous reefs. This technique, utilizing known mining technology together with more advanced machinery and additives as used in industrial and cleaning applications, may lead to an increased life-of-mine (LOM) for mining operations. A series of experiments was successfully carried out in a laboratory on Witwatersrand quartzite material, indicating acceptable cutting performance. Mining volumes by selectively cutting of reef portions are considered to be comparable to traditional drilling and blasting. Economic advantages of waterjet mining include energy savings due to the lower quantity of gangue rock to be hoisted to surface, as well as savings by a decrease in the usage of blasting materials. Capital expenditure of waterjet cutting, if applied on a broad scale, could be lower in the long term than that of conventional drilling and blasting methods. Mining by the application of high-pressure waterjet technology could become a competitive ?green technology? improving the economics and safety of labour-intensive mining operations. This paper suggests that waterjet cutting at an industrial scale can become a routine hard-rock mining technique in the future. Rock engineering is concerned with the design of rock structures generated by mining activities. Therefore, rock engineering designs have major implications for the safe recovery of mineral deposits and operating costs. The paper deals with a few challenges facing rock mechanics engineers operating in the hard rock underground mining environment in South Africa. Finally, examples are included, which may assist rock mechanics engineers in providing better designs, which could ultimately lead to further improvement in safety and lower operating costs.
