In 2002 a coal dust explosions occurred in the Polish collieries “Jas-Mos” and “Rydultowy” in the Upper Silesia coal basin. In the “Jas-Mos” colliery the coal dust explosion was initiated in the face of gallery by explosives and causing ten death. The stone dust barrier extinguished the flame, stopped the explosion development and saved forty nine miners working in that area. In the “Rydultowy” colliery methane inflammation caused three deaths and seven serious burns and ignited the coal dust explosion. The coal dust explosion was stopped by stone dust barrier and did not cause any victims itself. This paper presents the investigation carried out by the Central Mining Institute Experimental Mine “Barbara” and shows that the stone dust barriers remain still a basic mean for suppression of coal dust explosion in mines. The investigation were aimed at determining the cause of explosion and circumstances that led to their propagation. The evaluation of the state of dust explosion hazard in the areas of accidents have been performed, and the range of flame estimated.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of MSc (Eng) degree Solid state sintered silicon carbide ceramics are used in aggressive environments as sealings. There exist data concerning corrosion, but there are only few data concerning their electrocorrosion behaviour. Therefore the electrochemical corrosion of solid state sintered silicon carbide (SSiC) ceramics has been studied at room temperature in acidic and alkaline environments by using potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The investigation showed a pronounced electrochemical corrosion in bases and acids. In HCl andHNO3pseudo-passivity features due to the formation of a thin layer of SiO2on the surface were observed, whereas in NaOH soluble silicate ions were observed, resulting in more pronounced corrosion. The microstructural observations of initial and corroded samples reveal that the residual carbon found in the microstructure do not dissolve preferentially. A variety of carbonaceous reducing materials are being used for the production of ferroalloys. Reductant materials include not just carbons such as coke, coal, char but also bio-carbons in form of charcoal produced from different types of wood. This paper discusses critical properties and reactions of carbonaceous materials and their significance in dictating reductant performance. Main considerations include among others, gasification of reductant, dissolution of carbon into molten metal, and direct reduction of slag by solid carbon. These are discussed in relation to material properties such as structural order, mineral matter content, composition, physical characteristics etc. A brief review of both conventional and novel approaches towards characterisation of carbonaceous materials has been included. Due to complexity and heterogeneity of carbonaceous reducing materials and a wide range of process requirements, the selection of the most appropriate reducing agent will depend on a number of considerations such as the availability of raw material and associated costs, product and process requirements and environmental aspects of waste gas emissions.

The principles of microwave heating are discussed with reference to dielectric properties, heating phenomena and microwave equipment. Microwave regeneration of granular activated carbon for the carbon-in-pulp process is examined on a laboratory scale, with special attention being given to highlight the problem areas and specific considerations related to microwave heating. Results indicate that microwave regeneration of carbon with 40% moisture on a wet basis by heating to 650°C with steam addition regenerates the carbon to virgin carbon activity levels but with a higher abrasion resistance. A preliminary economic assessment showed that the capital cost for 120 kg/h microwave unit would be R540 000 with an annual operating cost of R 320/t carbon. These figures yield a return on investment of 12%. The aim of this paper is to provide an introduction to microwave heating and to illustrate its application to the microwave regeneration of granular activated carbon for the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process.

In 1999, Eramet bought the ferromanganese plants in Porsgrunn and Sauda (Norway) and Marietta (USA). With an ownership in the Comilog mine, the plants will operate with a high amount of Comilog ore. The properties of Comilog ore are reviewed and compared to a number of industrial operations. Important ore properties are chemical and mineralogical analyses, CO reactivity and mechanical strength. The advantage of Comilog ore is its contribution to lower energy and coke consumption. However, special precautions must be taken regarding the amount of fines and water introduced in the furnace, as Comilog ore is more porous compared to other Mn ores.

Irrational usage of mineral commodities leads to depletion of natural resources and various ecological violations in natural environment. Fulfilment of a number of measures and strategic decisions by given problems requires a correct forecast of trends of social-economic systems. For solving the task of long-term forecasting special procedures, considering Kondratyev’s big cycles of world conjuncture, have been embedded into algorithms of unknown parameters identification and recovering of factors of different countries mineral resources production and consumption models. In the paper the classification of long cycles types, existing forecasting algorithms on the basis of Kondratyev’s ‘long waves’ or ‘K-waves’ and the modified algorithm, developed by us, which allows to reduce time and financial expenses and to improve the forecast quality, are presented. Furthermore, the article includes several forecasts of mining branch corrected models factors, received by us, permitting complex prognosis of economic and social development of different scale and control level systems. In the paper workability of proposed forecasting algorithms on the base of ‘K-waves’ and adequacy of created models to researched processes are proved.

Titanium aluminide of composition Ti-47.5 at.% Al was prepared by melting titanium and aluminium of commercial purity with additions of precious metals of 0, 0.2, 1, 1.5 and 2 at.% content. The microstructure, hardness and oxidation properties were assessed. It was found that at 47.5 at.% Al, the microstructure of plain TiAl alloys was duplex, consisting of duplex lamellar grains and ? grains. The lamellar grains consisted of alternating lamellae of ? (TiAl) and a2(Ti3Al), with overall aluminium content in the range of 43?47 at.%. The ? grains had a aluminium content above 50 at.%. The addition of precious metals to the TiAl alloy resulted in the formation of a new phase, with a high precious metal content, occurring mostly in the ?phase, without any major change to the microstructure. Increasing the amount of precious metals resulted in an increase of the new phase amount, at the expense of the ? phase. The hardness of the different alloys was around 300HV10. Overall, the research has shown that addition of precious metals to TiAl resulted in a slight increase in hardness and a significant improvement of the oxidation resistance. This shows that alloying TiAl with precious metals, at the addition levels investigated, does not alter the mechanical properties very much, but improves oxidation resistance.

The characteristic of stope supports plays a vital role in the design of the supports. This paper deals with the characterisation of both cellular lightweight concrete and timber supports since both supports absorb and dissipate the energy in different ways. The behaviour of the support and hence its performance is simulated for different loading conditions by constructing a model consisting of various mechanical components like springs, dampers and blow-off valves. When the force exerted by the stope support increases significantly during deformation of the support, the stresses in the hangingwall could exceed values where failure of the hangingwall may occur. There is a need to understand this phenomena and the work presented in this paper is a first attempt to start with the characterisation of the stope support. Les caractéristiques des supports de taille jouent un rôle vital dans la conception des supports. L’étude présente traite de la caractérisation des supports cellulaires en béton léger et en bois, puisque ces deux types absorbent et dissipent l’énergie de façons différentes. Le comportement du support et par conséquent sa performance est simulée pour des conditions différentes de chargement en construisant un modèle qui consiste en des organes mécaniques variés tels que ressorts, registres et valves d’échappement. Quand la force exercée par le support de taille augmente considérablement pendant la déformation du support, les contraintes dans le toit peuvent dépasser des valeurs qui pourraient entraîner la défaillance du toit. Il est nécessaire de comprendre ce phénomène et l’étude ici présentée constitue un premier essai dans la caractérisation du support de taille. Die Charakteristika der Strossenunterstützung spielt im Design von Unterstützungen eine vitale Rolle. Diese Arbeit befaßt sich mit der Charaketerisierung sowohl der porösen Leichtgewichtbeton- als auch mit der Holzunterstützung, da beide Unterstützungen Energien auf verschiedene Art und Weise absorbieren und auflösen. Das Verhalten der Unterstützung und folglich seine Leistung wird für unterschiedliche Ladezustände simuliert, indem ein Model konstruiert wird, welches verschiedene mechanische Komponenten wie Federn, Dämpfer und Ausblaseventile enthält. Wenn die von Strossenunterstützung während einer Unterstützungsdeformation aufgebotene Kraft signifikant ansteigt, könnten die Spannungen im Bereiche des Stollenfirstes Werte überschreiten wo ein Versagen des Stollenfirstes eintreten kann. Es besteht die Notwendigkeit dieses Phänomen zu verstehen, und die Arbeit, die in diesem Elaborat dargestellt wird, ist ein erster Versuch, mit der Charaketerisierung der Strossenunterstützung zu beginnen.

Recently, work was carried out by the Shotcrete Working Group to study anisotropy in steel fibre reinforced shotcrete using strain-controlled, compressive strength testing methods. The shotcrete materials used and specimen preparation procedures as well as testing methods are described. The test results are discussed and it is concluded that, because of the anisotropic nature of fibre reinforced shotcrete, it may be worthwhile investigating the degree of such anisotropy in practice using strain-controlled, strength testing techniques.

Mineral resource management (MRM) practice has developed in South Africa over the course of the last ten years, with the purpose of integrating previously isolated technical functions into a value chain aligned, process organization, responsible for mine planning and optimization. The implementation of MRM within various companies has met with varying degrees of success, often resulting in incremental improvements in the planning process and, conversely, often becoming the scapegoat for poor delivery on plans and projects. The reason for this has been, amongst others, a lack of a suitable metric to define the success rate of MRM in the business at hand, in terms of its contribution to the bottom line. This paper is the result of extensive research by the author into this subject, which has resulted in the conclusion that economic value added is an appropriate measure that will lead to real optimization and value creation in mining companies, if applied within a new, holistic model

After smelting, the associated mineral ore accompanying Valuable Metal Compounds (VMC),such as titania and borate in BF., most of the VMC were separated from the metal into the molten slag that is an associated slags. Based on several case studies in laboratories and in a practice in a pilot plant on the associated slags , there occur a feasibility to recovery VMC from the slags by anew process- Selective Precipitation Technique (SPT) on which three continuous steps are involved: (1) The selective enriching the dispersed VMC into a designed mineral phase in the molten slag; (2) The selective coarsening the designed mineral phase with large crystal grain size;(3) The selective separating the coarsen phase from tailing by mineral dressing or hydrometallurgical process . Some results on the recovering the VMC from the associated slags by SPT were summarized as examples in present paper. Mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment in Mpumalanga(upstream of Loskop Dam) is at times discharged into local streams, resulting in local acidification and regional salination of surface water resources. Pollution of surface water can be prevented by collecting and treating mine water to a quality where it could be re-used without restriction (Cleanwater 2020 Initiative). Mine water in the Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to only 4,6% of the total water usage, but contributes 78,4% of the sulphate load. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. A number of alternative desalination treatment technologies were investigated (subsequent to gypsum crystallization pre-treatment) where treated mine water must meet more stringent quality requirements (e.g. less than 200 mg/lSO4). The capital cost of these processes varied between R4 million/(Ml/d) and R10million/(Ml/d) and the running cost between R2/m3and R5/m3. Water usage in the Upper Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to 947 Ml/d (including the power stations), and will increase to an estimated 1385 Ml/d by 2020. The additional water demand by2020 (438 Ml/d) will have to be supplied by importation from neighbouring catchments, and more efficient utilization of the local water resources, including excess mine water. Various levels of treatment are required to make mine water suitable for the following potential applications (acceptable treated water sulphate concentration shown in brackets): irrigation (2000 mg/l), coal processing plant (1000 mg/l), general industrial use (500 mg/l), discharge to public streams (500 mg/l), potable use (200 mg/l) and cooling water in power stations (20 to 40 mg/l). The following two options, or a combination thereof, can be considered for management of excess mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment: ?Collection and treatment of excess mine water to a quality suitable for selected urban and industrial applications (Option A) ?Collection and treatment of mine water to a quality suitable for irrigation (Option B). The estimated capital and running cost for Option A amounts to R528.5 million and R55.7 million/year, respectively, compared with R68,2 million and R11,9 million/year for Option B. It is recommended that Option B be investigated for implementation in the short to medium-term. Option B was selected due to cost benefits and the initial favourable results obtained by a joint Water Research Commission and Coal Industry initiative where mine water is used for irrigation. Option A may become feasible in the long-term to ensure maximum environ-mental protection and reduced treatment cost as a result of anticipated technological improvements over the next 5 to 10 years.

The use of a time series variogram as an aid in controlling the quality of a product was pioneered by Pierre M. Gy and is described. The ability to analyse and interpret covariance relationships time series data is possible using the variogram. The concept of stream heterogeneity allows sources of variability in process streams to be identified and isolated. Principally this is distributional heterogeneity that is due to a short range effect of segregation in the process stream related to size or composition distribution of the material on a local scale and due to a long-range change in the size and grade of the material stream. The variogram is simply a tool for representing these sources of variability in a way that is explicit, allowing identification of the source and providing important insights to temporal continuity between samples. This paper describes the chronologically related large-scale variability in an iron ore process stream (%Fe), and illustrates the control and mitigation of variability at various stages within the process using a variogram. Three main sources of variability are identified including the random variability V[0], the process variability V[1], and the variability due to cyclical phenomena V[cyclic], arising from human routine or mechanical defects. These sources of variability can be represented on the control chart that provides the plant superintendent with insights as to the sampling capability of the systems in place. Maintaining levels of variability within customer specification limits requires that production systems be controlled without overcorrecting for the trends in changing quality. This can be done only by representing the limits of control relative to the limits of specification on a control chart. Where the specification limits encroach on the control limits, one or the other, or both, may need to be changed; specification limits that constrain the control limits lead to reactive decision making that is expensive and stressful for plant operators.

1. A NEW CONTEXT FOR METAL INDUSTRY Producers and owners of industrial extractive sites are living hard times due to Environmental pressure and liabilities. This is valid whatever the region in the world, it is just a question of time. On one hand, the normative environmental pressure is increasing through more severe regulations and controls on all pollution sources and production materials. [ ] Furthermore, more impurities are extracted and captured, more the volume of the related wastes is increasing. But disposal costs are increasing, disposal areas for wastes are restricted, markets for wastes are limited and technologies for waste treatment are, most of the time, not available. On the other hand, for most of the extractive industries, the costs required to get access to refine primary raw material are killing the profitability of the industry. Definitively, a technological and economical breakthrough is ongoing: extractive industries have to increase their feed from secondary material and to be involved more and more with the recycling business.

The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) utilizes the application of centrifugal force (and the resultant enhanced gravitational field) to conventional jigging technology principles to successfully process materials where the valuable constituent particulates are very fine and/or where there is a small specific gravity differential between these and the gangue minerals. The KCJ has been successfully employed in mineral sands applications in Australia for approximately 12 years. More recently, the KCJ has been tested and installed on zircon tailings dump retreatment projects in Australia and the USA, while being considered for similar projects in RSA, and is about to be installed in zircon tailings processing duties in India and Africa and in a tin removal duty in a rutile circuit in Australia. Extensive test work has been carried out on these applications and some typical performance data is presented in this paper. Information is also provided on the principles of operation of the KCJ and on the keys to a successful KCJ installation.

A running facebreak ahead of the powered support units occurred on the number 4 seam at Matla Coal’s number 3 shaft (Matla 3) in April and May 2002.Very difficult mining conditions were experienced for a distance of some 150 m in the tailgate and to a lesser extent on the face itself. The paper analyses the main causes for the high stress conditions leading to the facebreak, namely, the existence of a >20 m dolerite sill close to surface and the effect of stopping longwalling on the overlying 5 seam. Difficulties experienced during the facebreak are discussed, including, pillar and roof collapses in the tailgate, high stress areas ahead of the face causing roof and sidewall stability problems, flushing of broken rock into the face area at the tailgate, secondary mid-face breaks, and the availability of critical support units. Successful rock engineering interventions and learning points were that, a goaf angle of 14.6° was found to be more realistic than the previously used 20 to 25° in predicting dolerite sill behaviour in this area, pre-split blasting of the sill significantly reduced stress on the face and tailgate allowing re-support work to proceed, varying pillar support types were analysed and rated, the need to always have a ground control “First Aid” kit available was recognised and a strategy for subsequent panels beneath the sill was developed. Numerous support units were used and the performance of the more suitable types is briefly discussed. The aim of this research was to study the absorption characteristics of thermally dried fine coal from South African collieries. After milling to ?150 µm and pressure filtration, the samples were subjected to either air drying or thermal drying at 150°C. The samples were then put into a climate box at 28°C and at three different relative humidity levels, namely 30, 60 and 94 per cent. It was found that the equilibrium moisture content of thermally dried coal at a specific relative humidity was lower than that of air dried coal. The relationship between the equilibrium moisture content and relative humidity is described by 1 ? RH = exp (-KTMen). There was no relationship between the volatile matter content and equilibrium moisture content, but there was an increase in the equilibrium moisture content of the coal with an increase in mineral content. The moisture uptake rate increased with an increase in temperature and a decrease in particle size. A model is discussed that fitted the experimental data and gave a good prediction for changes in the conditions. There was no evidence of greater moisture absorption by thermally dried coal. The aim of this investigation was to study the influence that varying production rates have on iron sinter quality. This was done by performing sinter pot tests at different pressure drops over the sinter bed, namely 11 kPa and 15 kPa (for 500 mm total bed depths). During each of the sintering processes temperature-time profiles were recorded of the top, middle and bottom layers of the sinter bed. On completion of the sinter process the sinter cakes were divided into top, middle and bottom layers. The physical properties of each layer were subsequently characterized by performing a tumbler test and a sieve analysis. A comprehensive mineralogical study was also conducted on each layer. This study revealed that sinters of similar cold strength could be produced under the examined production rates. However, a higher production rate was accompanied by an increased amount of fines. The cold strengths of both sinters significantly increased from the top layer to the bottom layer of the sinter bed. This strength variation is not related in any simple way to the phase composition. Longwall shearers usually suffer from excessive pick and pickholder consumptions and severe wear of the back plate of the clearance ring section of shearer drums. In practice, most of the drums were seen to be withdrawn from the face due to the abovementioned problems, while vane picks and their holders were intact due to the improper lacing design of the clearance ring picks. However, few underground investigations and their results on the effect of lacing arrangement of clearance picks on the service life of shearer drums have been published. Nevertheless, the pick consumption characteristics of shearer drums were not investigated in detail, since these are fewer pick consumptions with shearers when compared to roadheaders. This paper is concerned with the comprehensive in situ trials on the effect of lacing of clearance ring picks on the lifespan of shearer drums, and the pick consumption characteristics of longwall shearers at Cayirhan Coal Mine in Turkey. The lifespan of shearer drums employed with shearers in this mine increased 70 per cent, while the consumption rate of clearance ring picks decreased threefold through using an alternative lacing for clearance picks, indicating the significance of utilizing proper design techniques for clearance ring picks for the service life of shearer drums. Statistical analyses carried out, using the raw pick consumption data, implied that the clearance ring picks experienced much higher loads than vane picks, revealing that special attention must be paid to designing clearance ring picks. An average maximum consumption value of 41 was determined for clearance ring picks, with corner-cutting picks having the most replacements, while it was 35 for vane picks, on three-day based pick replacements.

Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900?s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily-poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930?s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has world-wide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development program dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and pre-heater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.
