The role of hardenability in the development of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels is discussed. The applicability of the superhardenability treatment. a steel making technique for increased hardenability, to HSLA steels is indicated, and the literature on this treatment is reviewed. Several low-carbon superhardenability HSLA steels were designed by use of published superhardenability multiplying factors. It was found that the hardenability of these low-carbon steels can be increased to the same extent as that of medium-carbon steels. The mechanical properties as determined in normalized bars indicate that the superhardenability treatment can be used successfully in the production of low-carbon hot-rolled HSLA steels.

SYNOPSIS The most economic exploitation of South African coal resources requires sustained study of the balance between known resources and the predicted rate of consumption, against the background of the development of other sources of energy in South Africa and relevant developments elsewhere in the world. A number of the major issues which would arise in such a study are discussed, including the need for a standardized South African definition for coal resources, the merits of sectoral forecasts of consumption compared with global forecasts, the encouragement of a higher recovery from reserves, and the development of an export market for South African coal.

After the introduction of mechanized bord-and-pillar development at Dumacol in 1958, pillars were being developed at a much faster rate than they could be extracted by hand loading methods. Efforts were therefore made to increase the rate of pillar extraction by mechanization. Following two partially successful mechanized stooping trials in 1964 and 1971, it was decided that mechanized pillar extraction with 1 m3 cable-reel front-end loaders should be introduced. The first section to employ the new equipment started production in May 1979, and the mine now has four mechanized pillarextraction sections in operation. Considerable improvements in production, productivity, safety, and percentage extraction have been achieved.

Rheological measurements on pulps from South African gold mines by G. s. HANSFORD, Ph.D. (Pennsylvania), M.Sc. (Cape Town), C. D. LEVY, B.Sc. (Eng.), and J. W. DE KOCK, Ph.D. (Cantab.), B.Sc. (A.I.C.) (Visitors) A method is described for the determination of the rheological parameters of a fast-settling slurry with conventional viscometric measuring equipment. The effect of concentration, temperature, and pH on these parameters is investigated. The results agree with those obtained by previous workers using different viscometers, but this method allows a more detailed characterization of all the properties. From a literature survey, two semi-empirical equations were found that allow the effect of concentration, temperature, or pH on the rheological parameters to be correlated.

It is shown that, when a flat-bottomed indentor is pressed into the surface of a strong rock, the normal force necessary to cause failure of the rock is reduced substantially if a shear force is applied to the indentor. A mathematical analysis is described, which shows that higher stresses are induced in an elastic material close to the free surface of the material ahead of a punch when a shear force together with a normal force is applied to the punch. Therefore, failure of the material would occur with lower forces applied to the punch. Stress trajectories show that fractures develop in the rock along lines of maximum principal stresses.

The South African gold and platinum deposits were formed in very different ways and yet both have many similarities. They are flat dipping tabular ore bodies, extremely narrow and located in hard abrasive country rock. The mining methods employed are also similar. Primary access is via shafts or declines; secondary access is via haulages and cross cuts; and tertiary access is from raises. The proposed solution for rapid access described in this paper is focussed on the haulages, cross cuts and raises. The non-explosive rock breaking method has many other applications, however, it is the integration with the Tunnel Digging Machine that results in the first, cost effective, Continuous Tunnelling Machine for hard rock mining.

Slimes disposal at South African gold mines by M. MROST*. M.Sc. (Rand) (Fellow) The soil mechanics, civil engineering, and environmental considerations applicable to the construction of slimes dams on the Witwatersrand gold mines are discussed. It is concluded that, though the procedures used in the construction of dam embankments do not accord with the best possible practice, they are entirely adequate in current local circumstances, provided that proper precautions are taken to ensure that the wall foundations are sufficiently permeable and strong, and that the dams are protected against erosion. If current trends towards larger mining and metallurgical complexes continue, it may become necessary to build larger, higher dams, and to adopt slimes embankmentbuilding practices that are inherently more reliable.

SAMPSON, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.), B.Econ. (Visitor) A spray roaster has been installed in the Johannesburg area for the treatment of spent liquors from a variety of small pickling operations. A new process was developed for the processing of the liquor that is contaminated with zinc chloride, and a commercial plant was built incorporating this process. An ionexchange plant separates the zinc from the iron chloride, and a liquid-liquid-extraction plant converts the zinc chloride to zinc sulphate and recovers the hydrochloric acid.

Research is a business activity, and is as different from other business activities as banking is from mining. attempting to use research to solve their problems, managers do not always recognize its unique features, are frequently disillusioned with the outcome. With a view to enabling managers to use research more effectively, an outline is given of the features of research as applied to mining. Types of research are distinguished, and stages in the research-and-development process are identified. The time-scales and resource requirements of the various types and phases of research are explained. Examples of research that have reached implementation in gold mining are given to illustrate the features mentioned. Practical and economic considerations are discussed, and pitfals and recommendations in the use of research are highlighted.

PREFACE During the past year, considerable effort was devoted to the implementation of the strategic plan that was adopted by the SAIMM in 1986. Good progress was made in a number of areas, while in others the foundation was laid for future progress. A mathematical model has been developed for flotation circuit simulation. This model was designed to investigate the effect of varying the circulating loads and to determine whether an improvement in overall efficiency could be gained by a size separation prior to flotation. Model parameters were obtained by regression to plant data. Highly correlated parameters in the model were combined to reduce the number of parameters so that the need for excessive data gathering was eliminated. Mass balance smoothing was used to obtain a consistent data set for regression. The results of the simulation indicate that for the same grade of concentrate, an increase in copper recovery of 0.6 per cent may be possible by increasing the circulating loads. The results of the simulation also indicated that recleaning of the plus 200-mesh material may be beneficial.

(Illinois) (Genoot) Although the industrial physiologist can still be regarded as a rarity in South African industry, it is obvious that he could make a positive contribution to the control of air pollution. For the past twenty-two years, the gold-mining industry has invoked the aid of industrial physiologists in solving various problems that continually crop up in the more effective and safer utilization of man-power. Air pollution is only one facet that has received attention. It can be stated emphatically that other industries could gain many advantages from the employment of this type of specialist. Because of inadequate opportunities for academic training, however, the industrial physiologists available might not be enough to fill all the possible posts in industry at present, but confidence is expressed that interested persons will soon be able to follow a full university course in this field of study.

This paper describes detailed fractographic analyses of several specimens that had undergone corrosion-fatigue tests at high stress ratios in simulated pressurized water-reactor environments. The distribution and morphology of non-metallic manganese sulphide inclusions are shown to strongly affect the growth of environmentally assisted cracks (EAC), and certain features suggest that a hydrogen-assisted mechanism is responsible for the observed EAC growth. The incidence of transient EAC growth in isolated regions suggests that the critical conditions that trigger this type of growth are the 'right' local chemistry at the crack tips and imposed mechanical conditions.

This paper reviews the theoretical methods used in South Africa for the prediction of heat pick-up and air-temperature gradients along main haulages. These methods include those of Starfield, Ramsden, McPherson, and Goch and Patterson. The differences in predictions based on typical airway conditions are explained as being due to differences in the mathematical models on which the predictions are based. The largest discrepancies were found for dry airways and for airways with bulk air coolers. The errors in predictions of the effect of machines and coolers that have been running for only a few months are calculated, and the limitations of various simplified methods are discussed.

This paper deals with procedures used for designing pillar systems in hard-rock tabular mines operating at shallow depths, typically less than 1000 m. A comprehensive review if current practice identifies four types if pillars, namely non-yield, yield, crush and barrier pillars, and the main principles for designing these pillars are outlined. It is shown that the current design methods for pillar systems in South Africa are mainly empirical, each mine developing its pillar-design methods based largely on practical experience. This results in varying pillar layouts, even between neighbouring mines, despite similarities in geology, and depth if mining. It is suggested that some current layouts may fall short if being the best as regards safety, the maximum safe extraction percentages, or flexibility in accommodating future mining scenarios in deeper or otherwise different geological conditions.

Inelastic deformation of highly stressed rock in deep mines needs to be quantified in both time and space. Since most deformation occurs by shear, continuous monitoring of discontinuities in the rock from boreholes holds promise. The casing. Al interpretations of shear movements are based on a simple relation between shear displacement and the resulting change in tilt of the sensor. A prototype has been constructed and has undergone laboratory trials with satisfactory results. Underground trials will commence shortly. The instrument as designed has the potential for other applications, both in the civil-engineering and mining industries. paper describes an instrument that is both cheap and reliable, and capable of monitoring such shear movements continuously. Ancient mining and Zimbabwe T. N. HUFFMAN*. Ph.D. (Illinois) (Visitor) Ancient gold mining and Zimbabwe have been commonly associated for over a hundred years, either in terms of an exotic colony for gold export or as an African state based on the East Coast trade. The stratigraphy and radiocarbon dates from Zimbabwe and the known sequence for the Rhodesian Iron Age demonstrate that Zimbabwe was built after AD. 1000. A review of the evidence for ancient gold mining shows a similar antiquity, and a complementary rise in prosperity in Arab settlements on the East Coast indicates that gold was not extensively mined until the eleventh century. Large quantities of imported articles at Zimbabwe indicate the extent of trading during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the origins of Zimbabwe probably lay in an overflow of wealth from the gold trade during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Zimbabwe was abandoned by the sixteenth century because of environmental factors.
