South Africa is amongst the 40 driest counties in the world, with extreme weather conditions and beset by both droughts and floods. Coupled with economic growth is an increased demand on water resources and, as with all other industrial developments, mining requires large volumes of water, which is likely to have an impact on the environment. Further to this, the mining industry also realizes that minerals are a non-renewable resource and the contribution to wealth creation from mineral extraction is not everlasting. It serves as an economic boost and careful planning is required to ensure that the legacy of mining is sustainable, and that some of the returns from mining provide continual economic and social prosperity.

One highly relevant challenge in flotation is the recovery of fine particles. Due to their low inertia, these particles are mostly pushed aside by rising bubbles. Consequently, they typically exhibit low probability for bubble-particle collision and thus, a poor recovery rate. In this work, the trajectories of fine particles in the vicinity of rising bubbles were investigated. The measurements considered a chain of millimetric bubbles in a rectangular container filled with deionized water. The flow field near the bubbles was measured by tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV), employing fluorescent tracer particles of 33μm diameter. Subsequently, trajectories of larger particles and bubble-particle collision events are recorded with 4D particle tracking velocimetry using a high temporal and spatial resolution. The results reproduce the well-known collision of particles on the leading edge of a rising bubble. Additionally, collisions on the tailing edge were observed in cases with a low Stokes number. The TPIV results demonstrate, that the high turbulent kinetic energy in the bubble wake allows particles to divert from the fluid streamlines and collide with the tailing edge of the bubble. The tailing edge collision probability increases with the bubble Reynolds number and decreased particle inertia. Overall, the investigation shows that the collision of fine particles in the bubble wake should be considered for the development of further collision probability models. Furthermore, the importance of turbulence on the fine particle flotation was demonstrated. Pseudomonas spp was isolated from mine water and tailings samples collected from mining effluents and mine dumps in the Gauteng and Northern provinces of South Africa respectively. Adsorption properties of Pseudomonas spp were then tested for the removal of Cu and Co initially from their synthetic sulphate solutions, subsequently from effluents derived from metallurgical operations. The effects of experimental conditions such as pH, temperature, time, volume and metal concentration on the efficiency of the biosorption process were studied. Absorption of 45% Cu (pH 6, 37°C, 24 hours) and 40% Co (pH 6, 37°C, 24 hours) was observed from solutions with low concentrations (0.07 M). A maximum of 73% and 65% of Cu and Corespectively were recovered from the mine water samples derived from effluents.

The minerals industry is committed to the principles of sustain-ability. Reducing water consumption is a priority area, especially for regions of water scarcity. This paper presents a systemic optimization of the water balance of the Skorpion Zinc refinery with the aim of reducing water consumption. An Aspen Plus simulation of the process is used. The validity of the simulation is tested by measuring key output variables and comparing results to plant data. A number of water minimization scenarios are investigated, Including unit operation and circuit configuration changes. The scenarios leading to the largest reduction in water consumption are through the full recycle of treated effluent water, which results in water savings of up to 19%. Reducing process water and/or recycling of untreated water is prohibited by the build-up of trace elements, which affect product purity. The Skorpion process already features a highly optimized water balance, with unit operational changes merely resulting in a shift in the water balance. Consequently, the largest area for improvement is through the re-use of effluent water. Keywords Skorpion zinc water usage, process optimization, sustainability.

It is well understood that to develop wagon wheels with higher abrasion resistance, fracture toughness, and fatigue resistance, steels with lower amounts of inclusions need to be used. Clean steels are produced with technologies that minimize the amount of inclusions in the microstructure. The demand for cleaner steels is high, and lowering of non-metallic oxide inclusions and controlling their morphology, composition, and size distribution is vital. Reduction of residual impurity elements such as sulphur, phosphorus, hydrogen, nitrogen, and trace elements is essential in the production of cleaner steel. Material cleanliness is vital for fatigue endurance, since oxide inclusions may act as stress concentrators and initiation points for fatigue cracks. To better understand the relationship between the cleanliness and toughness of the 34-inch cast wagon wheels, two samples of different levels of cleanliness were supplied for investigation. This paper presents the results of metallurgical analysis using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and mechanical tests for the pearlitic high-performance cast rail wagon wheel (identified as Class B) that are currently being used. The Charpy V-notch impact test results for the three samples from wagon wheels were compared. With the aid of SEM/EDS analysis system, non-metallic inclusions in these steels were detected, and it was possible to determine the position, size, shape, and composition of each particle. Alumina and manganese sulphide inclusions could be identified as the dominant inclusion types in the investigated samples. Fracture surface analysis of the Charpy specimen with high inclusions indicated that transgranular cleavage was the predominant fracture mode. Fractography of fracture surfaces of Charpy impact test samples also showed improvement of toughness properties on the clean sample.

As part of a broad program to optimise the performance of their grinding circuit, BHP Billiton Cannington have installed an OCS© Expert system together with three VisioRockTM online particle size analysis cameras. The main purpose of the system is to stabilise grind size and feed to the flotation circuit. This particular application of OCS© is the first installation to incorporate Metso Minerals Process Technology-Asia Pacific's (MMPT AP) Dynamic SAG/AG Mill Model, which is able to predict numerous mill parameters that were previously unable to be measured with the existing plant instrumentation. Integrated into the logic of the control algorithm are online vision based, particle size measurements of the AG mill feed and recycle crusher product. This paper will describe the history of the project from initiation to date, the model and OCS© logic configuration, and demonstrate the significant benefits realised at Cannington mine.

The cross-belt sampler is a device that is very widely used even though it has not been ratified by the Standards associations. This paper is concerned with the bias testing of two cross-belt sampler designs against stopped belt samples and a cross-stream cutter at the belt end. The bias analysis is carried out using size distribution as the analyte and conventional t-testing and the Hotelling T squared test, which are compared for their effectiveness. The paper considers the issue of detectable bias and the statistical planning of bias tests.

Previously, the grade of ore at the shaft head was taken to be equivalent to the grade measured in the faces by means of chip sampling. The tonnage mined from the stopes is determined from survey volumetric measurements. Estimates of shaft head grade and tons include the grades and tons of waste, development ore, sweepings from old areas, and other sources, not all of which are sampled. The tonnage of ore delivered at the shaft is often estimated using skip factors. These factors are subject to manipulation and not all the skips are filled to the same level. Consequently, both the grade and tonnage of ore delivered at shaft head are subject to a measure of uncertainty. For many years, these uncertainties have led to disputes between shaft managers and metallurgists over the reconciliation between shaft tons and grade and plant tons and grade. These problems are compounded when several shafts feed a central processing plant. Shaft bonuses and a shaft?s profitability are affected by poor gold allocation methods. Without measurement of the grade and tonnage from all shafts, a poorly performing shaft could benefit at the expense of the other shafts. In order to improve the measurement of grades and tonnage at the shaft head, which is the custody transfer point between the mine and surface operations, South African mining companies have developed a methodology to measure the mass of ore from each shaft using rail weighing equipment, and the run-of-mine grades delivered from each shaft using cross-stream (go-belt) sampling. Harmony Gold Mining Company has implemented the rail weighing and go-belt sampling methods for their shafts. This paper deals with the statistical tests on the procedures and control measures that are in place to establish confidence in the gold allocations. The metal accounting system for examining the allocations follows the first principle of the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting Code of Practice namely ?The metal accounting system must be based on accurate measurements of mass and metal content. It must be based on a full check-in check-out system?. The check-in is mass and grade of run-of-mine ore and the check-outs are the plant input grades and the recovery and residue from the plant. The balances between check-in and check-out are the subject of the statistical analyses, which have been conducted using the classical statistical tests and procedures that are generally used in all fields of endeavour. It is concluded that the gold allocation procedures that rely on go-belt sampling and rail weighing of ore from shafts has been successfully implemented, and that the system, which has been in operation at Harmony since 1993, has won general acceptance from stakeholders, with the gold allocations being perceived as being fair to all. Apart from the on-mine issues of bonuses and fair allocations, accurate metal accounting assists in the broader issues of generating accurate production figures for management. An added benefit of weighing and sampling ore at the shaft head has been that shafts now have daily moving average grades, which are used for grade control. The go-belt sample at the shaft head is the first accurate sample of production in the value chain from face sampling to gold bullion. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the main strategic restructuring aspects of companies that are directly (coalmines) or indirectly (companies that depend on coalmines) linked to coalmining. An attempt is also made to determine the principal factors required for the successful execution of a restructuring process in companies focused on the basic activities of coalmining, such as companies that provide supporting activities. The restructuring process exerts an influence on the whole area that relies on coalmining. So coordination of activities among the government, the local community, and the coalmine is very important. This is the major premise of this paper. The first section of the paper focuses on identifying and analysing the key factors in restructuring and a selection of key methods, drawing on past and present practice. The key factors to be considered in a model of enterprise restructuring in the coalmining sector are considered. The second section is dedicated to the actual design of the model of enterprise restructuring in the coal industry. The proposed model is based on positive experiences in the restructuring of coalmining companies in Europe, with an emphasis on Slovenia, successful approaches to crisis management in corporations, and identifying key areas in bringing about a strategic turnarounds in company operation. To support the argument for the key business areas, a brief summary of empiric findings has been included to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model and the restructuring process. The summary is based on the survey done in both Slovenian coalmining companies (especially in Velenje Coal Mine) and their subsidiaries. The peak in Sulphur price late 2008 caused again intensified investigation into the decomposition of sulphates and spend acid. One option is the recycling of sulphur from spend acid, which already started more than 40 years ago in the field of spend acid from organic processes in refineries and acrylic glass manufacturing. Since this acid couldn't be neutralized and discarded due to high organic contents, another source of SO2 to produce sulfuric acid is the decomposition of metal sulfates. The decomposition of metal sulfates was investigated at the next peak in Sulphur price in the 80?s. The first major scale pilot tests and studies of gypsum decomposition were carried out for clients in Florida. The decomposition of gypsum was quite often mainly influenced by the strategic decision of some countries to get own and independent acid production. In other cases the industry doesn?t have enough space to dump the gypsum. Therefore the company was also forced to convert the gypsum into ?saleable? products to avoid these residues. Other projects were made for the recycling of iron-sulfates from the pigment industry. The motivations for these projects were not only given by acid price. For the German pigment industry it was no longer permitted in the 80?s to dump the iron sulphate residues into the sea. These regulations forced the industry to develop new technology, which allows converting of the FeSO4-residues into iron oxide and acid. Therefore economical and mainly environmental factors influenced the decision of the companies to develop and to build these plants. Beside the above mention iron- and calcium-sulphates many other process exist, which produce metal sulphates as an intermediate product. These cases are not forced by environmental or strategic factors. In cases like Ni, Co or Mn-decomposition the main product of the plant is treated in the decomposition plant and later on used as ferrous-alloys. These final products are higher in price compared to e.g. CaO, which exclude the high-energy consumption for the endothermic chemical decomposition reaction. The reaction of SO2 generation based on acid or sulfate decomposition takes place in the range of 1000°C. The energy demand of the endothermic reaction is considerable and leads due to the high fuel-combustion off-gas stream to a diluted SO2 gas. Energy prices are usually increasing at the same time like sulphur. Sulphuric Acid based on decomposition is therefore more expensive than as acid based on sulphur combustion. The paper describes fluid bed technology and possible process concepts for decomposition plants. Additionally the thermodynamic background of the decomposition process and the main influence factors are provided to receive a better understanding of this technology.

Grains are subject to contamination by mycotoxins which are metabolic by-products of various fungi. The fungal infestations produce local concentrations of the mycotoxins thousands of times higher than the average. These facts make the sampling of the grain for assessment of the mean mycotoxin levels potentially very difficult. In the context of sampling theory, this morphology of the infestations creates a very high distributional and intrinsic heterogeneity of the grain shipment. The distributions of mycotoxin concentrations in seaborne shipments that exist at loading and the number and intensity of infestations that develop under shipping conditions are unknown. All grain shipments carry spores that may give rise to mycotoxin-producing colonies; moisture and temperature determine the final extent of the problem. This paper develops the value of the sampling constant with respect to intrinsic heterogeneity based on data on observed Ochratoxin A (OTA) concentrations in individual wheat kernels. A useful relationship between the distribution of mycotoxin concentrations on a kernel to kernel basis and the distribution of concentration over subsamples is developed.

The South African narrow reef hard rock mining industry has been stuck in a time warp with relatively little change in the mining process in the last century. This paper presents a methodology on how to implement change in narrow reef hard rock mining. It then explores a number of technologies that have been introduced into this mining industry and the impact that they have had on the mining process. The author then presents his view on whether the defined change process has been followed and sets out to identify the most critical aspect of ensuring that change is successfully implemented. Future demand will also be speculated on.

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution, the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallization and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. Furthermore, the autoclave circuit invariably is a high capital cost component of the plant and an area that is carefully scrutinized when debottlenecking and capacity increases are being considered. This paper identifies a unique proven way of increasing the capacity of existing or new exothermic pressure oxidative leach autoclave circuits by as much as two or three times.

Anglo Platinum is in the process of introducing a number of initiatives, varied in nature, on a scale that will impact operations in the short, medium and long-term. The advent of mechanization on a large scale and the introduction of new mining technologies therefore require a different approach to the design of ventilation and cooling systems. In addition, the ventilation and cooling systems serving increasingly deeper operations will place a greater demand on electrical power consumption?this in an environment where power generation is limited and increasingly expensive. Ventilation and cooling systems currently being employed in platinum operations have evolved from practices first pioneered in deep level gold mines. However, in modern and future platinum mines, deepening of operations will take place in a somewhat different environment?particularly in terms of geothermal settings and electrical power utilization. This provides the opportunities to devise novel and energy-efficient ventilation and cooling strategies tailor-made to meet these challenges. The need for refrigeration and cooling at depth will increase the capital and operational cost component of ventilation systems and the medium-term limitations on the availability of electrical power will require the provision of innovative systems. The increased use of diesel-powered vehicles underground, the viability of energy recovery and feasibility of thermal storage opportunities are discussed in this paper. Some of the challenges and the solutions currently proposed in terms of ventilation system design, refrigeration plant selection and chilled water distribution methodologies are described. Changes in strategies core to this discipline that affect the health and safety of employees and the profitability of modern operations are deemed necessary to support the transformations that are envisaged.

A value assessment model which uses deal objectives, financial and non-financial indicators as a guide to assess value creation in mergers and acquisitions. The extent to which post- merger deal objectives are achieved and the potential benefits derived from mining deals that may not necessarily be financial of nature, but which are necessary to sustain and enhance future performance, were considered. The pre-merger and post-merger performances based on some financial indicators that reflect profitability for shareholders were also used. This value assessment model was used to assess four major deals that have occurred in the South African mining industry since 2003 as part of a postgraduate dissertation. In this paper, the Harmony and ARMgold merger is used as an example of how the model can be applied. The model?s relevance and applicability can also serve as a guideline in developing a framework or holistic guideline in assessing whether mining BEE deals in South Africa create value.

A control philosophy to be applied by Lonmin to maintain constant electrode immersion in their no. 1 circular smelting furnace is put forward. This control philosophy is facilitated though a combination of thermodynamic models used to predict the slag composition and empirical correlations to estimate the furnace geometric factor as well as the slag conductivity. The model can determine the operating resistance set point required in order to maintain a desired electrode immersion as a function of the feeds to the furnace, slag level and temperature. If modifying the resistance set point cannot maintain the desired immersion without moving out of the furnace P-V-I operating envelope, the model can be used to determine the amount of slag modifiers (silica or lime) required to shift the slag chemistry back into a region where the immersion can be controlled though resistance set point manipulation.

The utilization of software is now inherent to virtually every activity along the mining value chain. However, apart from the software survey done by Gibbs in the 1990s and work on the extent of diffusion of information and communication technology (ICT) in the South African platinum sector by Mugodi and Fleming in 2003, the nature and extent of software utilization in the South African mining industry has never been evaluated. The Mine Planning, Optimisation and Valuation (MPOV) Research Group in the School of Mining Engineering, University of Witwatersrand, therefore initiated a project to collate and analyse the current utilization of software in the South African mining industry. This was done through the development of a web-based database of the relevant software. Snowball sampling was used to collect the data because the South African mining industry is diverse and software utilization is fragmented across and within the sectors of the industry. The data was then organized into distinct categories so that the information from a variety of sources could be evaluated on the same basis. A beta version of the database can be accessed online through a user-friendly front-end platform at http://db.mining.wits.ac.za. The database is expected to help at least 13 educational institutions with decisions on facilities and training that are vital to the education of mining and mining-related professionals. Exploration, mining, and consulting companies will also benefit from information in the database relating to availability and useful combinations of software solutions. The database is also strategic to software providers by providing a better understanding of their respective relative market share along the mining value chain. An analysis of the data collated in this research shows that about 77% of the software users are mining companies, 17% are consulting companies, 3% are mineral exploration companies, and the rest are software providers and educational institutions. The software used in the South African mining industry is largely provided by Gemcom Software International, MineRP Solutions, and MRM Mining Services. CAE Mining, who in 2010 acquired the Datamine Group providing Datamine software, is also widely acknowledged as a major software supplier in South Africa, but data from them had not been obtained at the time of producing the beta version of the database due to proprietary constraints. The work reported in this paper is part of an MSc research study in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. Component wear due to particle-laden flow is a significant challenge in the minerals processing industry in the handling and transportation of abrasive mineral slurries. Studying wear through experimentation is time-consuming and expensive; therefore possessing the ability to accurately simulate, understand and predict wear in these complex environments is highly desirable. The ability to predict wear is important in both the design of equipment in order to maximise the performance over the wear life of the components, as well in minimising potentially costly and dangerous failures and unscheduled maintenance.. Particle-induced wear is a complex problem, requring an understanding of coupled fluid-solid motion, geometry deformation in response to fluid-solid behaviour, moving geometries and wear modelling. Although the literature demonstrates that rebounding particles and changes to surface profiles can have a significant effect on subsequent wear rates and patterns, the challenge of implementing a model to account for this effect in complex geometries has been addressed by only a few authors in the literature. This paper describes a new wear simulator, leveraging fluidity, an open-source, massively parallel, finite element based CFD simulator capable of unstructured adaptive meshing. The wear simulator includes the ability to model particle-laden flow using representative Lagrangian particles and dynamic remeshing of geometry in response to wear and component movement. These capabilities are demonstrated using wear and the associated dynamically deforming boundaries within a Coriolis tester arm, with the results comparing favourably with the experimentally observed wear patterns.
