Reduce longwall intake contamination by controlling respirable dust generated by the stage loader. Approach Install a water-powered scrubber on the stage loader immediately outby the crusher. Dusty air from the crusher is drawn through the scrubber and a clean air discharge is delivered into the primary face airflow. How It Works The contamination of intake air is a significant dust control problem often overlooked on many longwall faces. This dust source contributes to the full shift dust exposure of all face personnel, and thus can significantly affect compliance with Federal regulations. Several sources contribute to contamination; however, dust generated by the stage loader crusher is the single largest source. The breaking action of the crusher generates a tremendous quantity of dust, which mixes with the primary ventilation airstream and is carried down the entire length of the longwall face. The installation of a water-powered scrubber (see diagram) has proven effective in controlling crusher-generated dust. The scrubber is mounted immediately outby the crusher. "HISTORYThe origin of roof bolting as a means of roof support is obscure. During the past 23 years a method was developed by the. St. Joseph Lead Co: at its mines in southeastern Missouri, ranging from occasional use of single bolts with small bearing plates to systematic networks of bolts utilizing continuous bearing plates. Officials of this company are not certain which of its employees suggested their use. Many instances of occasional use of roof bolts have come to light during the past few years in widely separated mining districts, such as in West Virginia, Alabama, Illinois, Colorado, and Wyoming bituminous coal mines, and in Pennsylvania anthracite, Lake Superior iron, and Colorado lead-zinc mines. A few of the known installations have boon in place as long as 40 years.These installations usually were made to supplement wooden timbering in mine openings whore space was constricted, although it had been reported that roof bolting was started as a systematic moans of roof support in at least three instances but was abandoned because the cost of installation was excessive. The extra expense above that of conventional timbering could not be recaptured through economies resulting from increased efficiency, such as would be gained through mechanized mining.Roof bolting was first mentioned in mining literature in an article by W. W. Weige 3/ in Engineering and Mining Journal of May 1943, in which he described the use of bolts with 4-inch channel bearing plates in mines of the St. Joseph Load Co."

Data or input files are used to describe the mine's ventilation system and physical characteristics necessary for ventilation calculations as well as the physical or mechanical disturbance to be modeled and simulated Data files are organized into lines of categories or groups of information Each line contains multiple sets of information or data items Data lines are read by the program, and the data items provide information to the program variables The data file is in American Standard Code for Informa¬tion Interchange (ASCII) format, sometimes called a DOS text format Creation or modification of a data file is accomplished with text editor software Most word pro¬cessors are also capable of making the required ASCII type files A sample data file and its associated output are included in appendix B. The prospect of utilizing bacteria in mining and metallurgical processes introduces a new and challenging area of investigation. Elements of bacteriology and metallurgy are discussed in connection with possible areas where biological science might be applied in extractive metallurgy. Bacteria may prove important in the selective separation of metals from ores and metallurgical solutions, the production of sulfur from gypsum or pyrites, and the production of sulfuric acid from elemental sulfur. A series of reports concerning the experimental applications of bacteria on minerals and metallic ores will follow this paper. For several years the Bureau of Mines has been investigating the action of bacteria in the oxidation of sulfide minerals and their potential uses in metallurgical processes. Primary attention has been given to the possible utilization of certain strains of autotrophic bacteria that live in industrial leaching solutions or fractures of mineral outcrops. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the mining and metallurgical engineer with micro-organisms and some of their possible applications in the field of extractive metallurgy.

The design of retort interchamber pillars is important in determining surface stability over in situ retort mines and to the health and safety of miners, particularly with respect to possible escape of heat and toxic gases from retort chambers. Stress distribution in retort interchamber pillars, roof, and floor was examined with the aid of linear, finite-element analysis using data from experimentally determined mechanical properties. Properties determined included elastic moduli, strength, and creep constants in laboratory tests on core covering a 100-foot depth interval in the oil shale from the Piceance Basin in Colorado. The most critical stress concentration was found in the rib side of the interchamber pillar at a height above the floor line of 1.25 times the width. Guidelines for pillar design that consider pillar strength, creep, and retorting temperature effects are proposed.

This section contains a summary of our investigation of the soil conditions (type, porosity, moisture content, etc.) at the two sites (Lanse and Kato, Pennsylvania) selected for field testing of latex as a soil sealant. Other natural conditions such as rainfall, frostline, depth of the water table, etc., were also measured and recorded for possible later use in assessing the effect of the latex seal on the total environment. The numbered sites referred to throughout this report are shown on the maps of the Lanse and Kato sites (Figures 1 and 2). KA, RB and KC are positions at the Kato site - all other numbered positions refer to the Lanse site. Two other terms used throughout the report which should be explained are “horizon” and "profile". These are synonymous terms for soil layer, A horizon (or A profile) referring to topsoil and B horizon (or B profile) referring to subsoil. The properties that control the flow of water through the soil are of special interest because these will also govern the passage of a sealant into and through the soil. Normally the particle size distribution is a good measure of soil permeability, which is directly proportional to sand content and inversely proportional to silt and/or clay content. Tables I1 and I11 show the percentages of gravel or stones, sand, silt and clay of Lanse and Kato soil samples. According to the United States Department of Agriculture classification, the gravel is ,ignored and the residue separated into sand, silt, and clay fractions. Figures 4 and 5 indicate by means of the USDk soil texture triangle that the variability of composition of Lanse soil ranges from sandy loam in the creekbed to clay loam. The variation is even greater among soil samples from Kato. Porosity of soil, also known as percent voids, is another indication of how readily water will travel through soils. Soil density usually increases and porosity decreases with depth, and as expected, the porosity of the top soil at Kato, a forest, is exceptionally porous and open (see Table IV) The pore diameter and length of soil capillaries is extremely variable, and its distribution in the field is impossible to determine. In addition to the capillaries, soil also contains many macro cracks, crevices, and passages around stones and roots. All these affect the flow rate of water through soil. Poiseuille's law states that the rate of flow of a liquid through a narrow tube is proportional to the 4th power of the radius of the tube. Pore size normally decreases with depth and in soil containing appreciable amounts of silt and clay this is especially true. Thus, deeper soils should be less permeable and such was the case at Lanse and Kato.

During the detection phase, several procedures can be used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SIN) . • Subarrays of up to 10 seismometers should be used. The apparent failure to obtain improvement in SIN in the Westinghouse subarrav work is probably due to excessive noise in the electronics. The spacings needed for sensors in the subarray must still be established. • The sensors should be buried. Even burial to a few feet will probably give appreciable reduction of noise. A deeper burial will probably further reduce the noise; and, if the seismometers can be put below the weathered layer, the signal level will probably be increased. The reduction in noise by burial will be especially effective during high noise periods due to wind or rain. • Before attempting detection, the waveforms should be bandpass filtered. The bandpass should go from 25 Hz to an upper frequency of 100 to 200 Hz. Further measurements with a low noise system must be done before the signal-to-noise ratio can be determined for the 100 to 200 Hz range. Any narrow band noise should be removed by notch filters. • If noise levels differ among seismometers of a subarray, weights inversely proportional to the noise power should be applied to the seismometers. • Automatic methods of screening data for possible signal arrivals should be developed, but the final determination that the signal on a subarray output appears to be from a miner should be made by an analyst. Detection of "signal" on several subarrays should be required for positive identification. In the location phase, after detection: • If repeated signals are received, they should be coherently added (stacked) to give as good a SIN as possible for use in determining signal arrival times, to be used in location computations. The miner should, if possible, repeat the signal 25 to 50 times.

Reduce the costs associated with conventional treatment of acid mine water. Approach Conventional treatment of acid mine drainage consists of plants requiring large mixing and aeration tanks, mechanical aerators and large, shallow settling ponds. Such plants are usually very costly to construct, maintain and operate. The Bureau of Mines has developed a simple, low-maintenance, highly efficient system to treat acid mine drainage which mixes, aerates, and neutralizes mine water Simultaneously in the existing discharge pipeline by using the pressure generated by the deep mine discharge pumps. The mixing and aeration action of the in-line system significantly increases oxidation rates of ferrous iron. Iron and manganese are removed, even at near neutral pH levels, due to the high efficiency of this system. How It Works The In-line Aeration and Treatment System (ILS) consists of two commercially available components, a jet pump (ejector) and a static mixer. The jet pump is simply a nozzle that converts water, already under pressure, into a high-velocity stream that entrains air by Venturi action. If neutralization is required, sodium hydroxide or lime is added along with the air at the Venturi opening. The aerated and neutralized water then enters the static mixer, which is a length of internally spiralled pipe that mixes air and water together. The two components, which are both about 8 feet in length, replace the last section of discharge pipe at a point before the mine water is emptied into a pond. Along with the settling pond, these components treat the water so that it meets discharge criteria. The system has been used at surface drainage treatment facilities as well, but in such use a pump is required to provide the necessary pressure drop across the Venturi opening.

Reaching movements are planned and subsequently executed [1] using visual and somatosensory feedbacks [2], where absence of visual feedback is known to increase endpoint variability [3]. Visual occlusion decreases the ability to make rapid online compensatory movements, which results in initial radial deviations that are highly correlated with radial dispersion at the target. Perturbations of rapid, visually-guided reaches are compensated on-line and result in endpoint dispersions poorly correlated with initial deviations, emphasizing the strong effect of visual feedback in temporally-constrained reaching tasks. In control conditions (no vibration), these uncompensated, rapid reaches serve as estimates of the individual’s intended trajectory. When ride motion is present, trajectories of rapid, visually-occluded reaches provide a measure of the natural biodynamic response of the cantilevered spine-arm-hand linkage. These intended movement trajectories and the biodynamic response (vibration feedthrough) are used to predict the effect of ride motion on the performance of rapid reaching tasks. Goals of this study are to investigate the influences of vehicle motion on human reaching and pointing, and to reveal movement strategies used in visually-occluded reaching tasks. Methods A six degree of freedom human-rated Ride Motion Simulator (RMS) was used to generate a dynamic vehicle environment. Participants performed discrete, rapid pointing tasks to targets presented on three touchpanel displays under stationary and random whole-body vibration. Reach instructions included successfully reaching identical circular targets (Ø = 0.25”) with the right index fingertip as fast as possible. Targets were presented on resistive-touch displays mounted approximately 60 cm from the participant’s nasion. The touchpanel displays were located in the forward and lateral directions at eye level, and forward at 45° of elevation. These displays measured the spatial error of the reach destination. A ten-camera VICON motion capture system recorded the upper body kinematics of the participant. Reflective markers were placed on the participant’s torso, head, and arms. Initial kinematics of the fingertip (i.e. time and magnitude peak tangential velocity) and tangential velocity at target were used to estimate the planned endpoint of the reach. Results and Discussion Ride motion resulted in increased endpoint variability compared to reaches performed in the stationary condition. Reaches to the elevated touchpanel consistently resulted in the largest variability across all motion conditions, suggesting that a vehicle occupant would not be capable of accurately activating a control in that location. Principal axes of endpoint ellipses were along and perpendicular to the direction of fingertip movements. Photometric instruments were designed and built for use with X- ray and spectrographic apparatus for the investigation and analysis of a variety of materials of hygienic interest . The instruments are simple in design , may be constructed economically , and have a number of features that make them stable and easy to operate . They are readily adaptable for measurement of either X - ray diffraction patterns or spectrographic films or plates . Because of these features and the interest shown in the instruments , they are described in detail , and reference is made to their application in the laboratory .

"It is evident that the incidence of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) or black lung disease varies in different coal producing regions of the United States. Many people have hypothesized about the reasons for the differing occurrences. Because underground coal mining involves many mining methods under changing geological conditions, several factors may be involved in contracting CWP such as: the amount of quartz in the respirable dust, the trace elements in the respirable dust, the rank of the coal that produced the respirable dust (bituminous, anthracite), the amount and size of respirable dust, etc.Recognizing the uniqueness of underground coal mining and CWP, research investigations involving seam characteristics, mining system and worker position are being conducted in the center to establish standard procedures for characterizing some coal properties that may be involved in workers contracting CWP. This has been accomplished by the in-mine sampling of airborne dust at various worker locations and mining system configuration and by performing laboratory analyses of mined material (coal and rock) taken from the mines. (FIGURE 49 and 50)The investigations includes a method of classifying coal seams according to their potential to generate respirable dust. It includes statistical analyses of the size and locational variations of the elemental compositions of respirable coal mine dust in operating underground mines from seams located in the eastern, midwestern, and western United States, and is currently completing research which is investigating the relationship between the elemental compositions of respirable dust sampled near a continuous-mining machine and a laboratory-produced respirable dust."

"Among the surplus explosives left on band with the War Department was a quantity of that styled Trojan Grenade Powder, which was especially designed during the war for use as a bursting charge in grenades and for which naturally there would be very little military use in time of peace. With a view to its disposal through use in civil projects a quantity was sent to the Bureau of Minas explosives experiment station, where analysis showed that its characteristic explosive ingredient was nitrostarcn and that the powder bad the following composition:Trojan Grenade Powder appears as a dark gray granular substance, part of which is slightly pulverulent. The granules fairly hard. The explosive is not at all dusty, and has the consistency of granulated sugar.Nitrostarch is a substance produced by treating starch with nitric and sulphuric acids and in appearance it looks very little different from powdered starch. It resembles nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin in its constitution and explosive properties and has been longer known than either, it having been prepared by Braconnet in 1833. Nitrostarch explosives have in recent years been developed for industrial use in this country, they having been used to an extent in blasting in the Canal Zone, yet as this grenade powder was a special composition it seemed desirable that a complete series of tests should be run upon it. This was done, and the results are reported in the following table in comparison with those previously obtained in testing ammonia dynamite."

The principal causes of many methane-gas explosions that have occurred in anthracite mines, especially in thick pitching veins, during recent years can be traced to lack of a satisfactory method of testing for such gas in areas adjacent to those in which blasting is to be done or other sources of ignition introduced. As coal-mine officials and inspectors are required to make examinations for methane in all accessible open workings, including high places, and permissible flame safety lamps have been used almost universally for making these examinations, considerable difficulty has been experienced in proper testing of atmospheres at elevations beyond the normal reach of the examiner, and resultant explosions have often indicated perfunctory tests. The accepted practice of testing for gas in voids or high places generally consists of raising a flame safety lamp, suspended from the end of a long drill, stick, or pipe, into the atmosphere to be tested. Disadvantages noted are: Action of the flame within the lamp cannot be seen readily when the lamp is more then 18 inches overhead, the flame will not be extinguished when less than about 4-1/2 percent of methane is present, and indications of small percentages of methane within the lamp may disappear entirely while the lamp is being lowered slowly to view; the examiner must usually be exposed unnecessarily to falling material; and the lamp may fall and be broken. Thus, the need for a more reliable, safe method of testing for gas in out-of-reach places is apparent. Several electrical methane detectors, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines, have been used satisfactorily, though infrequently, for making the aforementioned gas tests. Some of these detectors employ a rubber aspirator bulb and rubber tubing of suitable length to draw the atmosphere from high places through and over energized parts of the detector. However, the original expense, susceptibility to damage, and awkwardness of tarrying these instruments in steep-pitch workings has precluded their general use in everyday examinations. Although not as efficient as the electrical detector for determining small percentages of methane or as reliable because of the limitations imposed by oxygen-deficient atmospheres, the modern per¬missible flame safety lamp can, it is believed, be used safely with the rubber aspirator bulb and tubing to greater advantage and with comparative reliability in testing for gas in out-of-reach places. Slight reference to this method of introducing air into a safety lamp is made in a Bureau of Mines publication of l921,2/ and it is quite possible that the method has been utilized in some manner by individuals in American mines during the intervening years. A similar method was used in connection with a nonpermissible Wolf flame safety lamp in at least one coal mine in Japan before World War II. An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and industry . In connection with these activities , the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases , liquids , and solids , and investigates means by which explosions may be eliminated or reduced in violence . The limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures of combustible gases , vapors , and solids are of practical importance because such materials can be manufactured , transported , and used with greater safety , provided the range of concentrations and temperatures that cause explosions are known. Acetic anhydride , ( CH3CO) 20 , with which this report is concerned , is a liquid at ordinary temperatures . It is used in the preparation of a number of organic chemicals and in the manufacture of photographic film and of artificial silk . It is perhaps the most important acetylating agent for industrial uses - a property that is especially important at this time because of its direct application in the manufacture of munitions . The sample tested was supplied by the Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corporation . Its specific gravity was given as 1.083 at 20/20 . The vapor pressures , supplied by the manufacturer , are plotted in figure 1 .

"I. IntroductionThe alveolar surface of the lung is covered by two populations of pneumocytes, type I and type II epithelium. The type I cell, which accounts for most of the alveolar surface area and provides a highly specialized barrier for gas exchange (Rannels et al., 1991), is poorly understood. Although approaches to type I cell purification have been discussed, they have not been applied widely because of the lack of phenotypic markers to monitor isolation procedures (Dobbs et al., 1988; Danto et al., 1992). In contrast, the type II cell has been studied extensively, largely because of the development of reliable procedures for its isolation and primary culture. Investigations based on the use of purified populations of cultured type II cells have provided convincing evidence to support a role for the pneumocytes both in the maintenance of normal lung function and in the response of the lung to injury (for review, see Rannels and Rannels, 1989).While type II cells can be isolated by a variety of approaches, the protocols used most commonly are modifications of the gradient method of Dobbs and Mason (1979) or of the panning method of Dobbs et al. (1986). Purification of the cells based on density gradient centrifugation is reliable and consistent, with yields of 30 to 40 X 106 type II cells per rat of 230 g body weight. Isolation procedures applied to a minimum of three to four rats provide the best results, as lower cell yields are common with the use of fewer animals. In preparing for war , Japan built an iron and steel industry that ranked high with other industrial nations . Deficient in raw materials for making iron and steel , it had to acquire the bulk of its iron ore and much of its coal and scrap iron from foreign sources . Steel manufacture, and fabrication , however , were reserved mostly for the Home Islands , where modern integrated plants produced the implements of war . The vulnerability of relying on imports during the war was recognized early, and steps were taken to exploit iron-ore deposits and develop treatment processes on the Home Islands in order to be as self - sufficient as possible . Although the industry had expanded considerably, the capacity of the large plants still was insufficient for military requirements, so other meth- ods of producing iron and steel were adopted, which in some ways illustrate the desperate effort made to supply the war machine. In developing the iron and steel industry, modern practices of other countries were studied and followed with modifications to suit Japanese con- Aitions. German and American technical ability and equipment played a large part in the program; however, the Japanese had competent furnace technologists capable of obtaining proper equipment performance. For the most part, the standard practice consisted of smelting iron ores in blast furnaces and then refining the pig iron to make steel in open-hearth furnaces. Electric furnaces played an important part, especially in the manu- facture of alloy steels. Various other methods yielded minor but significant production. Among the various other treatment processes used, the production of sponge iron in rotary kilns 'probably was the most important in producing melt- ing stock for steel making. Of special importance was the fact that sponge iron made from low-grade ores contained critical metals, such as nickel and chromium, so that the results were more significant than was generally believed.'

Computer-aided loadflow and fault analyses of mine power systems are routinely conducted to ascertain system performance and also to provide information to assist in the protection and coordination of these systems. Three-winding transformers are frequently encountered in mining applications, typically at continuous miner and longwall sections where there exists a need for dual utilization voltages. These transformers are often modeled as a three-bus system neglecting the secondary to tertiary winding impedance and the effect of base changes. This paper analyzes the impact of more accurate transformer models on voltages and fault currents which are realized from loadflow and fault studies of mine power systems.

Heats of solution of calcium carbon-ate (calcite) and calcium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined by solution calorimetry. Combination of these two heats yields a value of 42.643±0.024 kcal/mole for the enthalpy of calcination of calcite at 298.15 K. Literature data on ?H°298.15 of calcination of calcite were reviewed and compared. Thermodynamic properties for the calcination process were calculated from 298.15 to 1,500 K using Gibbs energy functions. This research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as an effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of minerals technology, energy conservation, and environmental preservation.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Ethyl Gasoline corporation4, has completed a series of testis to determine whether any significant difference exists in the carbon monoxide content of the exhaust gas produced by an internal-combustion engine when its fuel is changed from straight gasoline to the same gasoline containing Ethyl fluid whose active ingredient is tetraethyl lead. In the tests data was sought relative to the composition and mount of the gas produced by ordinary comparatively low-compression motors as well as by higher-compression motors in which distinct detonation occurred with straight gasoline, but which operated without detonation when using the same gasoline containing tetraethyl lead.
