Bureau of Mines studies show than an electronic counter can be used for determining just concentrations from midget impinger samples collected in bituminous coal mines. A sample correlation coefficient of 0.91 for data obtained using the electronic counter and the Bureau of Mines microprojector procedures indicates a significant linear relationship between the methods. The electronic counter provides better counting precision and reduces analytical time.

The mineral industry continued to be an almost negligible contributor to the country's economy as the Government continued its 1979 ban on any mineral exploitation for export; a policy initiated at the end of 1979. A national program had been underway since that time to map and inventory all mineral resources so as to permit future exploitation of mineral wealth in the beat interests of the country and its inhabitants. In March 1982, the British Sulphur Corp. Ltd., under contract to the Burundi Government and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), began a feasibility study of Burundi's phosphate deposits at Matongo-Bandaga for potential commercial exploitation. The 1-year project effort was to define ore reserves, conceptually design mining operations and processing facilities, estimate capital and production cost, and develop a regional market and distribution survey. Work completed during the year comprised geological exploration and reconnaissance and 1,200 meters of core drilling. Reserves in excess of 5 million tons of ore-grade phosphate were estimated available for mining. Rare earth mineralization was associated with the primary apatite. The associated carbonatite within the rock matrix was preliminarily assessed to be of value as a raw material for the manufacture of cement. The contract effort was valued at $1.2 million? Matongo-Bandaga is located approximately 40 kilometers north of the capital city of Bujumbura and alongside one of the country's few paved roads.

Diamond-bit performance and cost data accumulated in core-drilling sandstones reveal significant trends of economic interest. Large-size, AA-Grade drill bort suffered less diamond loss per foot drilled than any other size or grade of diamonds assessed. Detailed analyses of the factors that affect diamond-bit performances -diamond size, diamond quality, bit size, bit type, percentage of core recovered, and physical characteristics of bit matrices -are assessed in the tables, graphs, and discussion. INTRODUCTION Since 1945 the Bureau of Mines has been compiling detailed performance records on diamond bits used in core drilling throughout the United States and Alaska. Analytical reports covering bit performance in various rocks are issued as in-formation on a significant number of bits used in anyone type of rock is accumulated. The first three such reports analyzed bit performance in gneiss,2/ schist,3/ and lime-stone and dolomite.4/ This report evaluates diamond-bit performance in sandstone. Data obtained from 627 bits, which drilled 42,665 feet on 45 different projects, are presented. The geographical distribution of the projects is shown in figure 1.

The necessity for protection against the hazards of lightning manifests itself from time to time in the mining industry by reason of loss of life, damage to electrical equipment, fires in surface structures at mines, and accidents in the handling and use of explosives. This paper is intended to assemble, correlate, and present some of the salient. points embodied in the available literature on the subject and at the same time give some factual data concerning instances of such loss of, life and damage to property, with special application to the mining industry The annual loss of life and destruction of property by lightning is considerable; the former may be prevented to a limited extent, though use of common sense as to exposure is required and not always followed; the latter can be prevented to a considerable degree. The manufacturers of electrical equipment,, through improved types of lightning arresters,, have done much toward the protection of electrical equipment, with consequent safeguarding of life and of property. Education based on unfortunate experiences has gone far to discourage the handling of explosives and blasting accessories during thunder storms, especially in open pits and quarries, and to a much smaller extent in underground workings. The lowly lightning rod plays an important role in the protection of certain types of buildings (especially isolated buildings), stacks, monuments, and other structures. LIGHTNING PHENOMENA In 1751, Franklin proved that lightning was simply a visible display of electricity - an extended spark; and until a generation ago little had been added to his exposition, to define the various phases of the phenomenon. In estimating the hazardous qualities of a dusty atmosphere it is frequently desirable to determine the composition of the air-borne dust. Samples collected from ledges or from the rock itself are Likely to be unsatisfactory for this purpose owing to the possibilities of differential disintegration of the rock and of variations in settling rates of the different components of the minerals. It may be necessary, therefore, to collect samples of dust from the air. Samples collected from the air may be analyzed chemically, by X-ray diffraction, and by the petrographic microscope. Chemical methods are unsatisfactory owing to the small samples usually available and to the limitations and complexities of: present methods. X-ray technique requires expensive apparatus not ordinarily available except in research laboratories. Owing to the simplicity and rapidity of petrographic is examination of atmospheric mineral dusts, it was considered worthy of further study.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines work was to develop information useful in improving copper recovery during copper milling operations. Eleven copper mill tailings from the Western United States were subjected to froth flotation and cyanide leaching to provide an experimental basis for comparing their beneficiation response. Recoveries in flotation concentrates made from mill tailings ranged from 65 to 15 percent, at copper grades of 13 and 2.2 percent, respectively. Liberated copper sulfide minerals present in two samples were readily recovered by laboratory froth flotation. Nine of the samples were less amenable to froth flotation because of physical locking between copper sulfide minerals and gangue. Correlations among tailings indicated that recovery of sulfide copper by flotation was directly related to the sulfide copper content. Empirical equations derived from flotation data provided average values for unrecoverable copper and for recovery efficiency. Flotation response of copper mill tailings may be predicted from the equations. Data from cyanide leaching provides an equation describing the limiting high values for removal of copper by this method.

"IntroductionThe accumulation of gummy and resinous deposits in consumers' gas meters began to assume serious proportions about 1917. As the trouble developed and spread in the years following, it manifested itself in several ways, which ultimately began to the expressible in distinctly economic terms, more specifically in terms of costs; in 1922 an organized and fundamentally based investigation of this trouble was begun. In an earlier paper*** a short statement of the occurrence and costs of the deposition was given and at the same time an analysis of the problem, as well as well as a general plan of attack, was presented. That plan included two general phases, first, a chemical study of typical was 1 quarry or 2 cosinous content , mauformly consituents, rmln and selected subjects; and secondly, a comparative survey of plants affected and sufficient therewith, attention being paid to construction, operation, meter conditions and related data. Mine seals can be remotely constructed in underground coal mines, through vertical boreholes, when direct access to a fire is impossible or considered to be too dangerous. This method has great merit because boreholes can be drilled to specific mine areas and seals can be positioned close to a fire zone. The technology however, can be largely ineffective if the constructed seals do not provide effective barriers to airflow or cannot be used to impound water and other inert materials. Unfortunately, no viable alternatives exist to sealing the entire mine at the ground surface. Full-scale remote mine seal construction research is being conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Under this effort, Howard Concrete Pumping Company and GAI Consultants, Inc. have joined forces to evaluate a potentially significant improvement to the current state-of-the-art. This paper will cover development of novel technology for remote mine seal construction, evaluation of the materials used, construction practice, and follow-up testing.

Information and data necessary for research on improving methods of oil recovery from low-permeability reservoirs and for comparison and evaluation of performance of such reservoirs with those producing from more permeable sands were obtained. Core analyses, well logs, production tests, well stimulation techniques, primary and secondary production records, and data on two water-flood projects were examined for wells producing from the Bartlesville sand, West Avant field, Osage County, Okla. Overall recovery from the study area was generally poor with only 9.0 percent of the pore volume recovered to January 1, 1968. Larger fracture treatments (8,000 to 12,000 gal) could have resulted in an increase in primary oil recovery. Secondary recovery by water-flooding accounted for only 1.9 percent of the pore volume because of the inability to control the large volume of injection fluid that escaped from the flood patterns and the excessive volumes of water produced with the oil. Future waterflood development in other low-permeability reservoirs should include the drilling of new input wells, use of injectivity surveys to locate possible natural fracture systems, or zones of high permeability, and control of injection fluids by altering flood patterns and/or plugging of the more permeable zones.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in the work of obtaining data regarding the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils from the various producing fields of the, United" States. Preliminary reports have been published that cover the eastern fields* and the' Rocky Mountain districts.** Since the appearance of these, reports: it has been suggested that certain additional data. I regarding the samples would be of practical value. It was believed that a knowledge of the viscosity of crude oil was desirable, particularly in connection with the design and operation of pipe lines. In accordance with this suggestion, the authors have made viscosity tests upon as many of the samples of the two series as wore still available for examination. Determinations were made at temperatures of 70° and 100°F., and in addition the oils were Subjected to the A. S. T M, pour-test*** to as certain the lowest temperatures at which they remain in a fluid condition.

Elementary concepts of seismic wave properties are reviewed to establish a framework for discussing seismic noise and its suppression. A liberal number of references is included for those who wish to pursue the topic in detail. A base motion noise level is established for a single surface seismometer. It is argued that simple array processing and seismometer burial should regularly permit us to approach this base noise level which is found in areas free of conspicuous man-made seismic noise sources. The sensitivity of the base seismic level to a number of common disturbances is presented. Solutions that promise to hold the "effective" seismic noise at a site near the base level are given for acoustic, meteorological and fixed local surface sources. Guidelines are suggested for controlling other local man-made sources, e.g. vehicular traffic, by keeping them at sufficiently large distances away from the seismometers to keep noise at permissible levels. These guidelines are speculative and conservative. They should be the subject of future study. The ability to process against general local activity, drilling, and intra- mine sources is limited. Certainly no dramatic gain is to be expected. When strong man-made and/or intramine noise sources are not controllable, detection may well be impossible to achieve, unless the seismometer can be moved close enough to the suspected miner position, i.e. via very deep holes, to compensate for the likely vast differences in strength of the miner signal and the uncontrollable man-made noise sources. However, many intramine sources, e.g., falling water, rock bursts, explosions, etc., may well preclude the existence of a hale miner in their vicinity, and therefore any need to attempt detection of a miner at such locations. The following recommendations are made to enhance the detection and location of a miner signaling seismically. They are: 1. Seismometer burial in slim holes. 2. Narrow band detection, using multiple narrow band filters to cover the likely signal band. 3. Broadband recording and analysis for time-of-arrival estimation.

"INTRODUCTION In city smoke-abatement work it is customary to require approval of the sizing of fuel-burning equipment. This is to insure that, with reasonable attention, the equipment can be operated essentially smokelessly, having such features as ample furnace volume and air supply. To answer the many inquiries that come to the Bureau of Mines as to what dimensions are acceptable and standard, the requirements of a number of smoke-abatement ordinances have been tabulated.CONCLUSIONSStudy of these tabulations shows that even after many years of fuel-burning practice and experience there is no common standard. Variations in the requirements for the same type of equipment under the same conditions of operation are great. This causes considerable difference in installation costs. Over-all costs being affected, the competitive positions of different types of fuel-burning equipment are also affected. It is apparent that there is a lack of information as to proper dimensions that is commonly accepted as authoritative.DISCUSSIONTable 1 gives the minimum furnace-setting heights required by various cities for mechanical underfeed stokers installed under H.R.T. boilers. Figure 1 shows a typical installation. The dimension given for each case is the distance from the dead plate of the stoker to bottom of boiler shell, unless otherwise noted. As shown in the table, different cities use different size-classification systems; it is not possible to make complete, exact, direct comparisons. Table la gives a comparison for various cities, showing the approximate percentage difference in H.R.T. furnace-setting heights required from those recommended by the Stoker Manufacturers' Association arbitrarily chosen to serve as a basis of comparison. The percentages are approxi¬mate because they were calculated as if all heights as given were measured from the dead plate of the stoker. In two cases a lower height is permitted, in a number of cases the height may be the same, and in a number of cases the height must be greater. The percentage increase goes to 100 in one case. Lack of uniformity is quite evident."

"In-mine airborne particulate samples have been successfully collected and the relative amounts of diesel and coal determined using the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method. This method allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the airborne respirable dust concentration in us underground coal mines. Samples were taken near the feeder-breaker, on haulage vehicles, and in the returns. Sampling methodologies were developed for coal-only and diesel-only particulate reference samples with sufficient filter loading for the LRQA method. A statistical analysis of reproducibility has been carried out. Samples have been collected simultaneously at two locations using the LRQA and the size-selective sampling methods. Good agreement between the two methods has been found.INTRODUCTIONThe goal of this research has been to develop the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method to measure the composition of respirable particulate, i.e. the fractions of coal and of diesel particulate, in the mine ambient air. In earlier Bureau of Mines sponsored research, we successfully demonstrated that the LRQA method could be used to measure the fraction of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in coal/diesel particulate mixtures which were prepared in the laboratory.(I) 'The immediate objective was to test and refine this LRQA method on samples collected in a diesel underground coal mine.Specific objectives required to meet this goal include:I) Develop in-mine sample collection methods which will insure sufficient particulate loading on filters for LRQA. ,2) Develop methodology for in-mine collection of reference samples (""coal-only"" and ""diesel-only"" filters) which arc required for quantitative LRQA. 3) Analyze precision and accuracy of the LRQA method. 4) Compare composition measurements with another analytical method, i.e. the University of Minnesota/Bureau of Mines size selective sampling Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) method.An advantage of the LRQA method is that it allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the respirable dust concentration in US underground coal mines. No new sampling instruments and techniques are required. Transfer of sample from collection substrate to analysis substrate is not necessary. Furthermore, other analyses can be made on the same sample since the technique is nondestructive."

It is estimated that more than 1 trillion cubic feet of methane is contained within the coals of the Mary Lee group in Jefferson, eastern Tuscaloosa, and southern Walker Counties, Ala. Most of this methane will be encountered by mining. Coals of the Mary Lee group are presently being mined at depths exceeding 1,000 feet and will in the near future be mined at even greater depths, where the problem of methane gas affecting the mining operations will be acute. It is calculated that approximately 90 pct of the methane is at depths greater than 1,000 feet, and over half of the gas is contained within only 12 pct of the study area which is under more than 1,500 feet of over-burden. Degasification in advance of mining will increase mine safety, reduce ventilation expenditures, increase productivity, provide an additional energy source, and make it possible to mine parts of deep coalbeds that probably could not otherwise be mined.

The Bureau of Mines has developed structural design data for unreinforced concrete tunnel linings in the form of stress and deflection coefficients from which bending, axial, shear, and boundary stresses, moments, thrusts, and shear forces, and structural deflections can be determined at any point on the lining. Results were obtained by structural analyses of nine concrete-lined tunnel configurations subjected to 22 biaxial load conditions. The tunnel configurations include three basic shapes, circular, rectangular, and horse-shoe, with dimensions based on designs evolved by the mining industry. These analyses were made by the direct stiffness matrix method, a computer-oriented procedure. Numerical results agree closely with those obtained experimentally.

Rock mechanics measurements indicate that the present two-bed mine design used at the Big Island trona mine, Green River, Wyo., results in stable workings. Vertical pressure changes in the lower panel pillars and horizontal pressure changes in the lower bed roof and floor indicated negligible upper bed mining influence. Pillar stresses stabilized soon after upper bed mining was completed. Strata movements in the pillar ribs, roof, and floor were also negligible and stabilized soon after completion of upper bed mining. Using tributary area theory, the confined core approach, and studies of model trona pillars it is shown that increased extraction ratio is possible. A program of gradually increased extraction ratio accompanied by simple measurements should result in a mine design that includes both higher recovery and long-term stability.

The manufacture of lubricating oils from wax-bearing crude petroleums involves the removal and recovery of the paraffin wax contained in the lubricating distillates. During this process several intermediate products are formed, among them the mixture of waxes and oils known to the refiners as "foots oil." Because of its complex character, foots oil is little understood, and therefore methods of handling it in refineries are often inefficient. The Bureau of Mines is studying the manufacture of lubricating oils, and during the work has investigated the redistillation of foots oil. This report gives in brief the results of the investigation, and recommendations based upon it.

PURPOSE The Temporary Face Support System (TFSS) consisting of beams, posts and carrying-emplacing equipment was developed to provide temporary supports between the working face and the permanent roof supports. 2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The system consists of: ? A Beam And Post Carrier And Deployer (BAPCAD), a self-propelled machine that carries as well as emplaces the beam-and-post sets. ? Lightweight mechanically self-deploying posts designed to safely support a load of 10,000 pounds each. ? Lightweight constant strength beams (bars) capable of sustaining an approximate equally distributed load of 8500 pounds. Note. Researchers at the Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for re- generating chromic acid-sulfuric acid etching solutions used in metal surface treatment operations. The technique utilizes a diaphragm cell equipped with a cation-selective membrane to oxidize cr3+ to cr6+ at the anode and to remove copper, the major metallic contaminant, at the cathode. Normally, spent etchant is discarded after approximately 3 days of use. Using the electrolytic cell, the etchant can be used for a year without replacement, From data obtained from industrial-scale cells, the installation of a regeneration cell with a 1,000-gal catholyte- holding tank has been estimated to save at least $240 per day, The payback period for the investment is estimated to be about 10 mo or less. Because the magnitude of these cost savings will vary at different locations, several graphs are presented to aid in calculating payback for a specific site. Using these graphs and the capital costs presented in this study, the payback period can be determined for installing a regeneration cell with a 500- or a 1,000-gal catholyte-holding tank in an existing surface treatment plant.
