Transients are results of sudden changes which take place in power systems and can be created by the opening and closing of switches and circuit breakers or the occurrence of a fault anywhere in the complex. Transients are of short duration, and the time during which they occur is an extremely small percentage of the total operating time. However, it is during these short periods that the greatest electrical stresses occur, mainly due to excessive currents or voltages. In extreme cases, system parts are damaged, and equipment failure follows. Safety can be further compromised because anomalous voltages can exist at machine frames. For several years, the electric utilities have been well aware of the serious nature of transients on their systems, but problems firmly believed to directly result from these phenomena are just now becoming apparent to the coal mining industry. The situation became discernible after the underground introduction of high voltage distribution systems (along with vacuum circuit breakers) and sensitive solid state electronic apparatus. In order to protect against such transients, knowledge about their characteristics and origin must be obtained.

"Freshly ground and aged anthracite and bituminous coal samples were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to detect the presence, concentration and reactivity of free radicals. Freshly ground anthracite coal produced greater concentration of free radicals than the bituminous coal, and the radical reactivity was also greater for the anthracite. The reactivity of the newly produced free radicals in the anthracite dust correlated with the dust's toxicity. Furthermore similar coal-based free radicals were detected in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners, suggestive of persistent reactivity by the embedded coal dust leading to the progressive disease process. Results of the studies on the severity of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and free radical concentration m lung tissue support this hypothesis.INTRODUCTIONCOAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS (CWP) has been an important topic of concern to miners, mining engineers, epidemiologists and medical researchers for decades. It is well known that the prevalence and severity of CWP differ markedly between different regions and mines despite comparable exposures to respirable dust (REISNER and RoBOCK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979). These variations in pathogenicity of coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by differences in the mineral composition and by rank of coal (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). Cytotoxity studies on mammalian cells do not correspond well with the human disease pattern (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al.,1980; VALL YA THAN et al., 1988). For example, while epidemiological studies of coal miners (REISNER and ROBECK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979) indicate that the prevalence of CWP correlates roughly with the rank of coal, such correlation has not yet been established in biological studies, despite considerable effort (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). In order to help resolve this apparent paradox we have undertaken a systematic study to evaluate whether any correlation exists between the concentration of free radicals present in fresh or aged coal dusts from two well-characterized U.S. coals. This study was also prompted in part by observations reported in the literature that organic free radicals can be formed on the surface of freshly fractured coals (LEBEDEV et al., 1978; DULIBA and CLARKSON, 1984). In particular, ARTEMOV and REZNIK (1980) noted that the decay lifetimes and, hence, the reactivity of the organic free radicals formed on crushing Russian coals, .depended"

The precious stones rubies and sapphires are transparent varieties of the mineral corundum . Essentially they are aluminum oxide , but the aluminum is often replaced. by small amounts of chromium , titanium , or iron . The chromium is said to give a red color , titanium a blue , and iron a yellow . True rubies range from rose to a somewhat purplish red and are sometimes termed " oriental rubies " to distinguish them from spinel rubies , stones of inferior hardness , density , and value . " Oriental rubies " are very rare , and the so-called " pigeon's blood" variety is the most valuable . Sapphires normally range in color from palest blue to deepest indigo , but actually all precious varieties of corundum of any other color than red are called sapphires . The most esteemed tint is like that of the blue cornflower . Colorless corundum of gem quality is called white sapphire ; the yellow variety is described either as yellow or as golden sapphire ; and the pale pink is classed as pink sapphire . The word " oriental " is also used as a prefix in naming varieties of corumdum of less popular colors . For instance , oriental emerald is used for green corundum, oriental topaz for yellow , and oriental amethyst for violet to purple varieties . The chief physical characteristics of rubies and sapphires are hardness , adamantine luster , and moderately high specific gravity ( 3.9 to 4.1) . Next to the diamond, corundum is the hardest of all minerals ; in fact , the sapphire is number 9 on Moh's scale , ranking between the topaz and the diamond. Rubies crystallize in 6-sided prisms terminated by flat faces and other varieties of corundum with twelve inclined faces , six above and six below , meeting in a girdle . Corundum is doubly refractive , with a direction of single refraction running parallel to the edge of the prism . The refractive indexes are very constant, the ordinary index ranging from 1.766 to 1.774 and the extraordinary index from 1.757 to 1.765. The double refraction always remains the same.

Noise induced hearing loss continues to afflict workers in many occupational settings despite longstanding recognition of the problems and well-known methods of prevention and regulations. Sound levels associated with heavy construction equipment range from 80 to 120 dB(A) and power tools commonly used in construction produce sound levels up to 115 dB(A).(1) The focus of this research was to determine the noise exposures of heavy construction equipment operators while documenting the workers’ tasks, (i.e. hauling, moving, and/or pushing construction material). Time-motion studies were performed at the construction sites and were used to correlate the noise dosage with the work performed by equipment operators. The cumulative dose for the operator was then plotted with references to work tasks, to identify the tasks that caused the greatest noise exposure. Three construction sites were studied for this research located in the western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio areas. The types of construction equipment studied included asphalt pavers, backhoes, bulldozers, compaction equipment, excavators, haul trucks, telehandlers, and wheeled loaders. The results showed that bulldozer operators consistently had the highest noise exposures, ranging from a NIOSH REL (Recommended Exposure Limit) dose of 844% to 25,836% and an OSHA PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit) dose of 139% to 1,397%.

The Bureau of Mines is collecting and analyzing representative samples of crude petroleum from all the producing fields in the United States , and the results are being published in a series of reports that are preliminary to the issue of a bulletin covering the entire survey . The bureau has recently completed a survey of crude oils from the Kansas district . In all 27 samples were collected and analyzed , under the direction of A. W. Ambrose , chief petroleum technologist of the Bureau. Valuable assistance was received through the cooperation of oil companies operating in the State , especially the Prairie Pipe Line Co. , and the Empire Pipe Line Co. The present report issued as Serial 2322 , on the Kansas crudes , forms the fifth of the series . Of the four previous papers , the first ( No. 2202 ) deals with crudes from the Eastern fields of the United States , the second ( No. 2235 ) with crudes from the Rocky Mountain district , the third ( No. 2290) gives additional data , cn viscosities and pour tests , for the crudes from these two fields , and the fourth ( No. 2293 ) covers the fields of northern Texas , northern Louisiana , and Arkansas . The details of the methods of collecting samples , making laboratory tests and interpreting results , have been discussed in these earlier reports . It has also been pointed out that the only adequate method of interpreting analyses of crude oils is to compare the individual reports with the analysis of some crude oil that is familiar to the operator . For this reason , no comprehensive discussion of the results of the Kansas survey is attempted, although some general statements may be made .

Pipe lines through which natural gas is flowing should be buried in order to minimize fluctuations in the temperature of the gas, as these fluctuations have several harmful effects. One of these effects is to decrease the accuracy of measurements of gas volume. In order to meter properly the quantity of gas flowing past any point in a transmission system, it is necessary to how the temperature of the gas. If the temperature remains fairly constant, the gas flow can be measured with a close degree of accuracy, but if it fluctuates rapidly, close measurement is impossible.

In anthracite mining , pumping is a problem of major importance , and water must be handled and rehandled in almost every mine whether the mine is in operation or idle . The motor - driven centrifugal pump is the most commonly used type of unit for the large pumping installations, and experience has . proved that fully automatic control has certain advantages over manual control . Some of these advantages are greater safety for maintenance personnel , continuous protection against faulty operation , which could cause damage to the Lumping apparatus , and lower pump -room operating costs .

As a part of the general chromite investigation in California designed to aid In the production of chromite during the recent war emergency, the Bureau of Mines explored the Coggins property in Siskiyou County, Work by the Bureau in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey began in October 1942 and was concluded in March 1943. This report presents a brief history of the mine, outlines the physical features of the district, describes the deposits) and explains the work completed by the Bureau of Mines, Table 1 shows the analysis of diamond drill-hole samples. "Characterization of the size, shape, chemical composition, and mineralogical content of mine airborne dusts generally requires a larger mass of dust particles than is typically collected using traditional sampling devices. In this paper, the general design of a passive dust collector is described and the field results are presented. The collector was constructed of galvanized sheet metal duct with a resin-coated honeycomb to provide an elutriation-type system for particle collection. Several versions of the collector were used in the field portions of the research.The dust samples collected from underground coal mines were found to possess angular particle shapes, relatively consistent size distributions, and elemental compositions that showed relatively little variation, at least for the more prevalent elements. In addition, the distributions of particles sizes obtained from the passive dust collector appear to be similar to those of samples collected at the same time in a conventional personal sampler except that the passive device seems to collect a larger quantity of coarse, nonrespirable particles. Conclusions on the suitability of this dust collector for collecting characterization samples are presented. In addition, the potential for using such a dust collection system for supplying dusts for biomedical research is discussed.INTRODUCTIONRecently, a considerable amount of research effort has been directed toward better understanding of the characteristics of the coal dust generated during the mining process. It is generally believed that dust characteristics play a significant role in the development of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP). In order to effectively protect coal workers from coal dust, it is important to understand the properties of dust, the mechanisms of generation and dust-lung reaction. Conducting research on dust characterization, dust control and the biomedical aspects of dust toxicology generally requires a large sample of airborne coal dust. Unfortunately, current dust sampling instruments are not able to meet this demand because only a few milligrams of dust are collected."

Lower the respirable dust expo-sure of longwall mine workers by reducing the amount of air-borne respirable dust generated during coal extraction. Approach Increase the moisture content of the coal seam through water infusion before the coal is mined. How Water Infusion Works Increasing the moisture content in coal tends to prevent respirable dust from becoming air-borne during mining and transport. The moisture content of the coal seam can be increased by infusing water into the seam. Water under pressure is forced into the cracks (cleats) of the coal seam through sealed bore-holes. The effectiveness of water infusion is a function of the amount of water the coal seam accepts (its infusibility), which depends on the cleat density (cleat spacing) and cleat size (crack diameter). Thus the effect of water infusion on dust control depends mainly on coal seam characteristics. Water infusion techniques are generally used to restrict the flow of methane gas to the working face; however, the technique provides an alternative dust control method in mines with severe dust problems which limit production.

The practice of using two or more main ventilating fans is common at large coal mines throughout the coal-mining industry. To assure adequate and efficient ventilation at may mines, such multiple-fan systems are necessary. The hazards associated with interrelated ventilating currents if a fan fails are controversial, and to date little effort has been made to study this specific problem and to determine corrective measures. The obvious questions are: 1. Is there a hazard? 2. Under what circumtances does it exist? 3. How serious is it? 4. What are corrective measures? Most members of the mining fraternity agree that reduced quantities of air and changed airflow patterns introduce potential hazards, especially where gaseous conditions exist when mechanized methods are used in concentrated mining 0 The seriousness of the hazard depends on the ease with which methane accumlates in face areas or haulage roads, the quantity of methane in workedout areas, and the extent to which reversed air currents interfere with escape and recovery operations after mine fires or explosions. These studies cover three mines and give the distribution of air for the specific conditions show. Each mine probably has somewhat different airflowpressure relationships between fans. Develop an improved downhole geophone system with enhanced signal/noise ratio for collecting cross-hole seismic data used in tomographic reconstructions. Background The Bureau of Mines is conducting research in the use of cross-hole seismic tomography for detecting and monitoring leach solution flow during in situ mining. This technique requires the use of a downhole seismic energy source in one borehole and a downhole wall-locking receiver (geophone) in another borehole separated from the first by the region to be investigated. Bureau research personnel chose a commercially available air gun for use as the downhole seismic energy source. Unfortunately, commercially available downhole wall-locking geophones that the Bureau tested were difficult to operate in the field, often unreliable and generally inadequate in terms of their signal/noise ratio. Therefore, research personnel began to experiment with an alternative down-hole geophone design that could be used to collect adequate data in a wide variety of borehole and cross-hole field situations. Approach An attractive alternative geophone design would be one that would incorporate a pneumatically operated wall-locking system. As an integral part of the Bureau's existing field system, a portable, high- pressure/low-volume air compressor would have sufficient capacity to operate the air gun as well as several small high-pressure pneumatic linear actuators. This approach was the simplest and most compatible with the research activities being conducted at the site.

In 1930 , 65,448 long tons of virgin or primary tin were consumed by 1,292 establishments in the United States , representing about 91 per cent of the total consumption as computed from imports , exports , and stocks at the beginning and the end of the year . The reported consumption was equivalent to 38 per cent of the world's tin production in 1930 , estimated at 171,000 tons , and was 12 per cent less than the 74,369 tons consumed by 1,307 establishments in 1928 . Decreased consumption of new tin in 1930 ás compared to 1928 was a reflection of the general industrial depression . All of the tin- consuming industries showed substantial decreases except tin plate and terneplate , white metal , and tinning , which showed small tonnage increases aggregating only 1,200 tons . The largest tonnage decrease was in the use of new tin in babbitt which declined 33 per cent in 1930 as compared to 1928. This was largely attributable to the decreased production of automobiles and trucks , which was 24 per cent lower in 1930 than in 1928. Percentage decreases in other important tin- consuming industries were as follows : Solder 18 per cent , bronze 19 per cent , tin foil 40 per cent , chemicals 23 per cent , tin oxide 44 per cent , and type metal 46 per cent . The distribution of the amount consumed by various uses during 1927 , 1928 , and 1930 is shown in table 1 . Consumption studies indicate the fact that variation in tin consumption from year to year parallels the fluctuations in demand for the already wellestablished tin products . For example , the manufacture of motor cars and trucks3 required only 11,000 tons of tin in 1930 compared to 19,000 tons in 1928 ; the canning industry continues to require the greater portion of the tin plate and much of the solder . Recently developed industries , while affecting total consumption of bearing metals , solders , etc. , to some extent , have made little change in the relative importance of these commodities as consumers of tin .

"In the United States there are hundreds of underground and surface (inside and outside) inclines at coal mines on which trips of cars are continually being run with coal, rock, supplies, and men. The safety of the men and prevention of damage to the slopes depend, excluding the personal element of the hoist-man, on the strength and condition of the wire cable, draw bars, and the couplings, and on the links of chains and pins as well. Within a recent period of four weeks there have been two runaway trips, one on the surface and one underground; it seems desirable to call attention of mechanical engineers and others at coal mines to the need for closer and more frequent inspection of the cable, draw bars, coupling links and pins, derailing devices, wheels, brakes, and other parts of cars or trips on which men are hauled on inclines. This bureau has never published anything on this class of accident heretofore.How frequently runaway trips occur is not known. If no serious injury or fatalit has to be reported to the State authorities, a number of such happenings may occur and not be mentioned outside of the immediate vicinity of the mine.Runaway trips can and do result in considerable loss of life, in injuries, and damage, either at or near the place of the break, or throughout a mine by causing an explosion of gas or coal-dust or both, This report is restricted to a study of the mechanical and physical phases of car trip construction and of the metal of couplings and ropes; derailed trips are not included and may be the subject of another paper. There is no need to mention gas accumulations, coal-dust and rock-dusting, open lights, protected power lines, and permissible equipment, because these have all been well covered in Bureau of Mines publications which have been widely distributed and partly or wholly reprinted by others.Most of the items regarding the runaway trips tabulated have been abstracted from reports made respectively by Clarence Hall, W.O. The high thermal-neutron cross section of gadolinium and the good mechanical and corrosion properties of titanium suggest that alloys of these two metals might be useful as control rod material. To aid in establishing the feasibility of this combination, the Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the titanium-gadolinium system. The results indicate that the system is composed of a single eutectic reaction and a peritectoid reaction involving the alpha-beta transformation of titanium. The eutectic isotherm extends from 1 to 99 pct, gadolinium at 1,240° C. The established eutectic composition is about 95 pct, gadolinium. The peritectoid reaction occurs at 885° C. and extends almost over the entire composition range. Hardness increases slightly with additions of gadolinium, and little change is obtained by heat treatment. Alloys containing less than 10 pct. gadolinium are amenable to extensive cold-working, but alloys having higher percentage of gadolinium content are only moderately cold-workable. All alloys can be hot-worked in iron sheathing at 750° C. Observation indicates that all compositions possess good machinability. Corrosion resistance to water at room temperature is apparently poor, especially in the gadolinium-rich alloys. INTRODUCTION A combination of the good mechanical and corrosion properties of titanium and the variety of thermal-neutron cross sections characteristic of the rare-earth metals suggests that alloys of these metals may be used for control rod materials. For this reason the Bureau of Mines proposed a study of the titanium-gadolinium alloy system, and the Atomic Energy Commission sponsored the investigation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated electrowinning and tapping lanthanum metal from lanthanum oxide in a fluoride bath. The electrolyte was composed of LaF3, BaF2, and LiF. Metal containing 0.2 percent impurities was produced at a rate of over 2 pounds per hour. Principal impurities were carbon, aluminum, and silicon. Low-carbon metal was produced by continually discharging the carbon oxide gases and maintaining 0.1-atmosphere pressure. Anode reactions and cell design were found to be important factors in cell operation. Both frozen electrolyte skulls and tungsten metal crucibles proved satisfactory for collecting the metal and did not react with the molten lanthanum.

Much has been written and many discussions have been held concerning the prevention of accidents in coal mines , and considerable progress has been made in eliminating hazards to the health and safety of underground workmen . Although much progress has been made in the reduction of injury rates in the Pennsylvania anthracite field , the injury rates for the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania are generally higher than the average for coal mines in the United States as a whole , because the mining conditions , including the safety problems , in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields are more complex than in other coal fields of the United States . Several factors contribute to this extremely difficult problem , among which are : Multiple - vein mining , steeply pitching measures , folds or faults , hard smooth floors underneath the veins , and the remining or reclaiming of pillars in severely crushed , broken ground . In the early days of the Pennsylvania anthracite industry , only the more productive veins were mined , and this resulted in bypassing those veins that were relatively thin and those containing considerable proportions of impurities . However , the development of modern coal - preparation equipment , improved marketing conditions , and the adoption of mechanical equipment , such as the various types of conveyors and scraper loaders , have made possible the recovery of the thinner and poorer veins . Furthermore , in the early days , little or no attempt was made to recover the coal pillars , usually owing to the great amount of virgin coal available . Consequently , much of the anthracite produced within the last few years has been recovered by second and third mining and frequently by fourth mining - in areas where operations had been suspended for many years . In such areas , the coal veins and intervening strata are usually crushed as the result of gradual subsidence , which intensifies the hazards incidental to roof control , haulage , ventilation , and mine gases . Moreover , the use of coal - cutting equipment is not practicable in most anthracite mines because of. the inclination of the veins and because , in crushed -ground areas , the faces must be advanced slowly and for short distances at a time to permit the erection of timber sets and the placing of forepoles to support the roof and sides . Thus , the slow process of mining brought about by these conditions has resulted in the production of only 0.424 ton of anthracite for each man- hour worked , as compared with 0.753 ton? for each man - hour worked at other coal mines in the United States . A summary contained in Bulletin 462,8/ a publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines , reveals that the rate of fatal injuries in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry was improved from 13.47 deaths per million tons produced in 1870 to 3.88 deaths per million tons mined in 1942. During the period March 16 , 1942 to January 1 , 1947 , the fatality rate was reduced from 3.88 to 2.87 deaths for each million tons mined . On the million man-hour basis , the rate of fatal injuries was reduced from 1.643 to 1.130 and the nonfatalinjury rate was lowered from 119.01 to 83.12 during the same period . The improvements made in both the fatal- and nonfatal - injury rates have required the cooperation of the workmen , the mining companies , and the State and Federal inspection departments . Many individual mines and companies have achieved commendable safety records which contributed greatly to the over - all average for the industry , particularly during the 1942-47 period . One of the most outstanding of these is the Continental mine of the Continental -Archbald Coal Co. , a member of the Moffat Co. Interests .

"INTRODUCTION The Bozeman corundum deposit was first examined in May 1944 by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. In August 1944, the property was re-examined because of a sharply increased war demand for corundum. A small program of trench exploring was undertaken after the second examination. The work was started in October 1944 and was completed in December 1944. This report presents the essential data obtained by the exploratory work.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that, they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploration work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The field work on the Bear Trap project was supervised by E. W. Newman, district engineer Montana District office. The microscopic examinations and. the grid grain-count analyses of the samples and the beneficiation tests were made at the Bureau's laboratory at Salt Lake City, Utah, under the direction of S. R. Installation of a horizontal air-blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong Coand? effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector-to-bailing-airflow ratio and a 51-mm (2-in.) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 152-mm (6-in.) wide and was located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air-blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.
