The precious stones rubies and sapphires are transparent varieties of the mineral corundum . Essentially they are aluminum oxide , but the aluminum is often replaced. by small amounts of chromium , titanium , or iron . The chromium is said to give a red color , titanium a blue , and iron a yellow . True rubies range from rose to a somewhat purplish red and are sometimes termed " oriental rubies " to distinguish them from spinel rubies , stones of inferior hardness , density , and value . " Oriental rubies " are very rare , and the so-called " pigeon's blood" variety is the most valuable . Sapphires normally range in color from palest blue to deepest indigo , but actually all precious varieties of corundum of any other color than red are called sapphires . The most esteemed tint is like that of the blue cornflower . Colorless corundum of gem quality is called white sapphire ; the yellow variety is described either as yellow or as golden sapphire ; and the pale pink is classed as pink sapphire . The word " oriental " is also used as a prefix in naming varieties of corumdum of less popular colors . For instance , oriental emerald is used for green corundum, oriental topaz for yellow , and oriental amethyst for violet to purple varieties . The chief physical characteristics of rubies and sapphires are hardness , adamantine luster , and moderately high specific gravity ( 3.9 to 4.1) . Next to the diamond, corundum is the hardest of all minerals ; in fact , the sapphire is number 9 on Moh's scale , ranking between the topaz and the diamond. Rubies crystallize in 6-sided prisms terminated by flat faces and other varieties of corundum with twelve inclined faces , six above and six below , meeting in a girdle . Corundum is doubly refractive , with a direction of single refraction running parallel to the edge of the prism . The refractive indexes are very constant, the ordinary index ranging from 1.766 to 1.774 and the extraordinary index from 1.757 to 1.765. The double refraction always remains the same.

As part of its program to help decrease the dependency of the United States on foreign imports of nonfuel minerals and to devise technology for the efficient and economic use of domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines smelted and sulfation-leached an ilmenite from northern Minnesota. The objective was to assess the feasibility of preparing chlorination-grade titanium feedstock. The concentrate was smelted with woodchips, coke, and soda ash in 91-kg-and 1-metric ton (mt)-capacity electric arc furnaces to form Ti-rich slag and commercial-grade pig iron. The slag contained from 67 to 77 wt pct titanium oxides and from 1.8 to 7.2 wt pct iron. Sulfation occurred in a 4.5-kg/h moving-bed reactor using S02-air mixtures at temperatures of 8000 to 8500 C to form soluble salts of the Ca, Mg, Mn,and Na impurities, which cause plugging of fluidized-bed chlorinators. Subsequently, the sulfated slag was leached in acid to remove the soluble sulfates. The final product from small-scale testing contained up to 95.5 wt pct Ti02, a minimum of 0.6 wt pct Fe, and a minimum total of 0.3 wt pct of the four impurities of interest. The final product meets charge specifications for chlorination. However, more large-scale testing is necessary.

Thirteen miners died as a result of 2 explosions in the Jim Walter Resources No. 5 mine near Brookwood AL in September 2001. Both explosions were ignited in intake air entries, and both were probably ignited by electrical equipment. With few exceptions, permissible equipment is not required in intake air entries of US underground coal mines Researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. studied the electrical equipment ignition sources for the Brookwood and other w disasters to develop recommendations for preventing similar disasters Adherence to National Electrical code® requirements for flexible cords installed in hazardous (classified) locations may have prevented the second massive Brookwood explosion. The 30 CFR Part 7 requirements for battery assemblies should be reevaluated, taking into consideration United Mine Workers of America recommendations and the Zone 1"increased safety" standard requirements for battery assemblies, Class 1 Division 2 or Zone 2 explosion protection techniques are recommended for intake air equipment so that they do not present a methane air ignition source under normal operation before mine power is shut down during emergencies Battery powered circuits intake air that are likely to remain energized during emergencies should be protected by more stringent protection techniques, to protect rescue/recovery personnel. The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory-scale investigation of a technique that produces zinc sulfate and elemental sulfur from sphalerite concentrates by reaction with sulfuric acid at 175° to 200° C and ambient pressure. The objective of the investigation was to develop a hydrometallurgical method of producing zinc from sulfide concentrates that does not generate sulfur dioxide pollutants. Reaction with 80-to 85-pct sulfuric acid produced 4 moles of sulfur for every 3 moles of sphalerite reacted, with minimal production of sulfur gases under optimum conditions. More than 98 pct of the zinc was recovered as zinc sulfate after 3 hours at 175° C. The reaction mixture was leached with simulated spent zinc electrolyte containing 13-pct sulfuric acid to recover zinc sulfate from the insoluble, high-sulfur residue. Neutral zinc sulfate, which is required for electrolysis, was separated from the sulfuric acid solution by crystallization as ZnS04?7H20 at -10° C. Up to 80 pct of the water in the recycled electrolysis solution was removed by the crystallization process; evaporation was used to further concentrate the sulfuric acid for reuse in leaching sphalerite. Advantages of the proposed method over conven-tional roasting and leaching include virtual elimination of sulfur dioxide, production of a solid sulfur byproduct, and higher zinc recoveries due to elimination of zinc ferrite losses.

"Freshly ground and aged anthracite and bituminous coal samples were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to detect the presence, concentration and reactivity of free radicals. Freshly ground anthracite coal produced greater concentration of free radicals than the bituminous coal, and the radical reactivity was also greater for the anthracite. The reactivity of the newly produced free radicals in the anthracite dust correlated with the dust's toxicity. Furthermore similar coal-based free radicals were detected in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners, suggestive of persistent reactivity by the embedded coal dust leading to the progressive disease process. Results of the studies on the severity of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and free radical concentration m lung tissue support this hypothesis.INTRODUCTIONCOAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS (CWP) has been an important topic of concern to miners, mining engineers, epidemiologists and medical researchers for decades. It is well known that the prevalence and severity of CWP differ markedly between different regions and mines despite comparable exposures to respirable dust (REISNER and RoBOCK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979). These variations in pathogenicity of coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by differences in the mineral composition and by rank of coal (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). Cytotoxity studies on mammalian cells do not correspond well with the human disease pattern (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al.,1980; VALL YA THAN et al., 1988). For example, while epidemiological studies of coal miners (REISNER and ROBECK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979) indicate that the prevalence of CWP correlates roughly with the rank of coal, such correlation has not yet been established in biological studies, despite considerable effort (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). In order to help resolve this apparent paradox we have undertaken a systematic study to evaluate whether any correlation exists between the concentration of free radicals present in fresh or aged coal dusts from two well-characterized U.S. coals. This study was also prompted in part by observations reported in the literature that organic free radicals can be formed on the surface of freshly fractured coals (LEBEDEV et al., 1978; DULIBA and CLARKSON, 1984). In particular, ARTEMOV and REZNIK (1980) noted that the decay lifetimes and, hence, the reactivity of the organic free radicals formed on crushing Russian coals, .depended"

Noise induced hearing loss continues to afflict workers in many occupational settings despite longstanding recognition of the problems and well-known methods of prevention and regulations. Sound levels associated with heavy construction equipment range from 80 to 120 dB(A) and power tools commonly used in construction produce sound levels up to 115 dB(A).(1) The focus of this research was to determine the noise exposures of heavy construction equipment operators while documenting the workers’ tasks, (i.e. hauling, moving, and/or pushing construction material). Time-motion studies were performed at the construction sites and were used to correlate the noise dosage with the work performed by equipment operators. The cumulative dose for the operator was then plotted with references to work tasks, to identify the tasks that caused the greatest noise exposure. Three construction sites were studied for this research located in the western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio areas. The types of construction equipment studied included asphalt pavers, backhoes, bulldozers, compaction equipment, excavators, haul trucks, telehandlers, and wheeled loaders. The results showed that bulldozer operators consistently had the highest noise exposures, ranging from a NIOSH REL (Recommended Exposure Limit) dose of 844% to 25,836% and an OSHA PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit) dose of 139% to 1,397%.

Lower the respirable dust expo-sure of longwall mine workers by reducing the amount of air-borne respirable dust generated during coal extraction. Approach Increase the moisture content of the coal seam through water infusion before the coal is mined. How Water Infusion Works Increasing the moisture content in coal tends to prevent respirable dust from becoming air-borne during mining and transport. The moisture content of the coal seam can be increased by infusing water into the seam. Water under pressure is forced into the cracks (cleats) of the coal seam through sealed bore-holes. The effectiveness of water infusion is a function of the amount of water the coal seam accepts (its infusibility), which depends on the cleat density (cleat spacing) and cleat size (crack diameter). Thus the effect of water infusion on dust control depends mainly on coal seam characteristics. Water infusion techniques are generally used to restrict the flow of methane gas to the working face; however, the technique provides an alternative dust control method in mines with severe dust problems which limit production.

In addition to explosion-proof enclosures, the IEC has published recommendations: 1. 79-2 Pressurized Enclosures, 2. 79-3 Intrinsic Safety, 3. 79-5 Sand-Filled Apparatus, 4. 79-6 Oil-Immersed Apparatus, and 5. 79-7 Increased Safety. All these are valid methods of electrical hazard reduction and find wide use in industries other than mining. Magison (52) discusses in detail each technique and, therefore, such an examination will not be repeated. Two other systems, lamina and labyrinth, are but variations of common explosion-proof enclosures and, therefore, will not be cov¬ered. (34,35,46,53,54,61) By examining other national authorities' opinion, the following will investigate each system's applicability to coal mining. Intrinsic safety applies to any system which is incapable of re¬leasing sufficient energy to be an electrical hazard. (49) Not one foreign country contacted disagreed with the concept, and they find these systems totally acceptable. Only South Africa does not accept oil-immersed apparatus, but no reasons were given. (62) Healy (27) stated that Queenlands, Austrailia would accept all techniques, yet some were still to be employed. Japan specifications allow for all but sand filled. (42,43) Increased safety or Protection Type "e" is an approach in hazard reduction in which special design considerations are applied to ensure an extremely low probability of electrical or mechanical breakdown

Pipe lines through which natural gas is flowing should be buried in order to minimize fluctuations in the temperature of the gas, as these fluctuations have several harmful effects. One of these effects is to decrease the accuracy of measurements of gas volume. In order to meter properly the quantity of gas flowing past any point in a transmission system, it is necessary to how the temperature of the gas. If the temperature remains fairly constant, the gas flow can be measured with a close degree of accuracy, but if it fluctuates rapidly, close measurement is impossible.

This report presents a brief history of the mine, outlines the physical features of the district, describes the deposits) and explains the work completed by the Bureau of Mines, Table 1 shows the analysis of diamond drill-hole samples. "Characterization of the size, shape, chemical composition, and mineralogical content of mine airborne dusts generally requires a larger mass of dust particles than is typically collected using traditional sampling devices. In this paper, the general design of a passive dust collector is described and the field results are presented. The collector was constructed of galvanized sheet metal duct with a resin-coated honeycomb to provide an elutriation-type system for particle collection. Several versions of the collector were used in the field portions of the research.The dust samples collected from underground coal mines were found to possess angular particle shapes, relatively consistent size distributions, and elemental compositions that showed relatively little variation, at least for the more prevalent elements. In addition, the distributions of particles sizes obtained from the passive dust collector appear to be similar to those of samples collected at the same time in a conventional personal sampler except that the passive device seems to collect a larger quantity of coarse, nonrespirable particles. Conclusions on the suitability of this dust collector for collecting characterization samples are presented. In addition, the potential for using such a dust collection system for supplying dusts for biomedical research is discussed.INTRODUCTIONRecently, a considerable amount of research effort has been directed toward better understanding of the characteristics of the coal dust generated during the mining process. It is generally believed that dust characteristics play a significant role in the development of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP). In order to effectively protect coal workers from coal dust, it is important to understand the properties of dust, the mechanisms of generation and dust-lung reaction. Conducting research on dust characterization, dust control and the biomedical aspects of dust toxicology generally requires a large sample of airborne coal dust. Unfortunately, current dust sampling instruments are not able to meet this demand because only a few milligrams of dust are collected."

This paper discusses the application of digital human models (DHM) to examine computer generated forces necessary to move specific joysticks by using roof bolter virtual operators to predict the forces experienced on the operator’s upper extremities. Using DHM and simulations of static movements, investigators analyzed predictions of joint moment and joint force effects on virtual operator’s right wrist, elbow and shoulder and compared them to different body dimensions and work postures. This study exemplifies the ease of estimating upper extremity loads on equipment operators using virtual operators and computer models of equipment and work environment. As expected, comparing results of percentage of joint force and moment reduction using the electronic control and of the mechanical control showed that the electronic control had lower joint forces and joint moments over the mechanical control. The average predicted value of the joint moment on the wrist was 1.84 Nm, elbow 7.85 Nm and shoulder 14.55 Nm and of the joint force on the wrist was 5.06 N, elbow 4.56 N, and shoulder 3.67 N. Because the data illustrates low-level forces to move a joystick, inadvertent actuation of the control is addressed. Regardless of the findings, research is still needed on joysticks in real world situations such as an epidemiological assessment of equipment operators in the field before final recommendations and conclusions can be drawn.

The practice of using two or more main ventilating fans is common at large coal mines throughout the coal-mining industry. To assure adequate and efficient ventilation at may mines, such multiple-fan systems are necessary. The hazards associated with interrelated ventilating currents if a fan fails are controversial, and to date little effort has been made to study this specific problem and to determine corrective measures. The obvious questions are: 1. Is there a hazard? 2. Under what circumtances does it exist? 3. How serious is it? 4. What are corrective measures? Most members of the mining fraternity agree that reduced quantities of air and changed airflow patterns introduce potential hazards, especially where gaseous conditions exist when mechanized methods are used in concentrated mining 0 The seriousness of the hazard depends on the ease with which methane accumlates in face areas or haulage roads, the quantity of methane in workedout areas, and the extent to which reversed air currents interfere with escape and recovery operations after mine fires or explosions. These studies cover three mines and give the distribution of air for the specific conditions show. Each mine probably has somewhat different airflowpressure relationships between fans. Develop an improved downhole geophone system with enhanced signal/noise ratio for collecting cross-hole seismic data used in tomographic reconstructions. Background The Bureau of Mines is conducting research in the use of cross-hole seismic tomography for detecting and monitoring leach solution flow during in situ mining. This technique requires the use of a downhole seismic energy source in one borehole and a downhole wall-locking receiver (geophone) in another borehole separated from the first by the region to be investigated. Bureau research personnel chose a commercially available air gun for use as the downhole seismic energy source. Unfortunately, commercially available downhole wall-locking geophones that the Bureau tested were difficult to operate in the field, often unreliable and generally inadequate in terms of their signal/noise ratio. Therefore, research personnel began to experiment with an alternative down-hole geophone design that could be used to collect adequate data in a wide variety of borehole and cross-hole field situations. Approach An attractive alternative geophone design would be one that would incorporate a pneumatically operated wall-locking system. As an integral part of the Bureau's existing field system, a portable, high- pressure/low-volume air compressor would have sufficient capacity to operate the air gun as well as several small high-pressure pneumatic linear actuators. This approach was the simplest and most compatible with the research activities being conducted at the site.

In 1930 , 65,448 long tons of virgin or primary tin were consumed by 1,292 establishments in the United States , representing about 91 per cent of the total consumption as computed from imports , exports , and stocks at the beginning and the end of the year . The reported consumption was equivalent to 38 per cent of the world's tin production in 1930 , estimated at 171,000 tons , and was 12 per cent less than the 74,369 tons consumed by 1,307 establishments in 1928 . Decreased consumption of new tin in 1930 ás compared to 1928 was a reflection of the general industrial depression . All of the tin- consuming industries showed substantial decreases except tin plate and terneplate , white metal , and tinning , which showed small tonnage increases aggregating only 1,200 tons . The largest tonnage decrease was in the use of new tin in babbitt which declined 33 per cent in 1930 as compared to 1928. This was largely attributable to the decreased production of automobiles and trucks , which was 24 per cent lower in 1930 than in 1928. Percentage decreases in other important tin- consuming industries were as follows : Solder 18 per cent , bronze 19 per cent , tin foil 40 per cent , chemicals 23 per cent , tin oxide 44 per cent , and type metal 46 per cent . The distribution of the amount consumed by various uses during 1927 , 1928 , and 1930 is shown in table 1 . Consumption studies indicate the fact that variation in tin consumption from year to year parallels the fluctuations in demand for the already wellestablished tin products . For example , the manufacture of motor cars and trucks3 required only 11,000 tons of tin in 1930 compared to 19,000 tons in 1928 ; the canning industry continues to require the greater portion of the tin plate and much of the solder . Recently developed industries , while affecting total consumption of bearing metals , solders , etc. , to some extent , have made little change in the relative importance of these commodities as consumers of tin .

The high thermal-neutron cross section of gadolinium and the good mechanical and corrosion properties of titanium suggest that alloys of these two metals might be useful as control rod material. To aid in establishing the feasibility of this combination, the Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the titanium-gadolinium system. The results indicate that the system is composed of a single eutectic reaction and a peritectoid reaction involving the alpha-beta transformation of titanium. The eutectic isotherm extends from 1 to 99 pct, gadolinium at 1,240° C. The established eutectic composition is about 95 pct, gadolinium. The peritectoid reaction occurs at 885° C. and extends almost over the entire composition range. Hardness increases slightly with additions of gadolinium, and little change is obtained by heat treatment. Alloys containing less than 10 pct. gadolinium are amenable to extensive cold-working, but alloys having higher percentage of gadolinium content are only moderately cold-workable. All alloys can be hot-worked in iron sheathing at 750° C. Observation indicates that all compositions possess good machinability. Corrosion resistance to water at room temperature is apparently poor, especially in the gadolinium-rich alloys. INTRODUCTION A combination of the good mechanical and corrosion properties of titanium and the variety of thermal-neutron cross sections characteristic of the rare-earth metals suggests that alloys of these metals may be used for control rod materials. For this reason the Bureau of Mines proposed a study of the titanium-gadolinium alloy system, and the Atomic Energy Commission sponsored the investigation.

"In the United States there are hundreds of underground and surface (inside and outside) inclines at coal mines on which trips of cars are continually being run with coal, rock, supplies, and men. The safety of the men and prevention of damage to the slopes depend, excluding the personal element of the hoist-man, on the strength and condition of the wire cable, draw bars, and the couplings, and on the links of chains and pins as well. Within a recent period of four weeks there have been two runaway trips, one on the surface and one underground; it seems desirable to call attention of mechanical engineers and others at coal mines to the need for closer and more frequent inspection of the cable, draw bars, coupling links and pins, derailing devices, wheels, brakes, and other parts of cars or trips on which men are hauled on inclines. This bureau has never published anything on this class of accident heretofore.How frequently runaway trips occur is not known. If no serious injury or fatalit has to be reported to the State authorities, a number of such happenings may occur and not be mentioned outside of the immediate vicinity of the mine.Runaway trips can and do result in considerable loss of life, in injuries, and damage, either at or near the place of the break, or throughout a mine by causing an explosion of gas or coal-dust or both, This report is restricted to a study of the mechanical and physical phases of car trip construction and of the metal of couplings and ropes; derailed trips are not included and may be the subject of another paper. There is no need to mention gas accumulations, coal-dust and rock-dusting, open lights, protected power lines, and permissible equipment, because these have all been well covered in Bureau of Mines publications which have been widely distributed and partly or wholly reprinted by others.Most of the items regarding the runaway trips tabulated have been abstracted from reports made respectively by Clarence Hall, W.O. The Bureau of Mines investigated electrowinning and tapping lanthanum metal from lanthanum oxide in a fluoride bath. The electrolyte was composed of LaF3, BaF2, and LiF. Metal containing 0.2 percent impurities was produced at a rate of over 2 pounds per hour. Principal impurities were carbon, aluminum, and silicon. Low-carbon metal was produced by continually discharging the carbon oxide gases and maintaining 0.1-atmosphere pressure. Anode reactions and cell design were found to be important factors in cell operation. Both frozen electrolyte skulls and tungsten metal crucibles proved satisfactory for collecting the metal and did not react with the molten lanthanum.

"INTRODUCTION The Bozeman corundum deposit was first examined in May 1944 by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. In August 1944, the property was re-examined because of a sharply increased war demand for corundum. A small program of trench exploring was undertaken after the second examination. The work was started in October 1944 and was completed in December 1944. This report presents the essential data obtained by the exploratory work.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that, they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploration work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Installation of a horizontal air-blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong Coand? effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector-to-bailing-airflow ratio and a 51-mm (2-in.) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 152-mm (6-in.) wide and was located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air-blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.
