The practice of roof bolting, now recognized as an effective method of support, is based largely on rule of thumb. Among the various applications of bolting, the support of stratified mine roof is by far the most common. The general principles relating to this type of reinforcement are presented in two companion reports; the first describes the function of the bolts, the bolting pattern, and the behavior of bolted roof (1), 2/ and the second describes the design of the models and the theory of the experimental method (2). This report presents a rational method for designing systems of vertical bolts to reinforce horizontally bedded mine roof, developed from model tests. The structure treated herein may be described as follows: The immediate roof, consisting of beds of like material and equal thickness with no bond between them, is reinforced by vertical bolts installed in straight lines across the opening; the case of suspension is excluded because the bolts are assumed not to extend above the immediate roof. The assumption is made that the behavior of the lowest bed approximates that of a rectangular plate clamped along two opposite sides (the ribs). These specifications represent approximately the roof conditions encountered in mining bedded deposits of all kinds - coal, potash, iron ore, etc. Thus, for the design of a roof-bolting system a quantitative solution to the following problem is required: For a roof composed of beds of given thickness and physical properties, how does the support depend upon the length, spacing, and tightness of the bolts?

5. Development of Initial Probing System 5. 1 Introduction The preliminary evaluation of a variety of potential methods for initial probing showed that the optical system using closed circuit television (CCTV) and the sonar, or acoustic ranging, system were the most promising. The former is capable of pro¬viding a visual display of the mine passages in a clear, non-smoky environment, and the latter is capable of providing a map of the spatial location of the coal surfaces making up the entries, as well as objects, such as cribs, mining machines, etc., in the passages in both smoky and non-smoky environments. The sonar system used in conjunction with the CCTV in a clear environment can greatly assist in resolving the spatial distribution of objects seen on the TV screen. Further, in a smoky environment the interpretation of the sonar information could be facilitated if some visual information were also available. CCTV systems exist but require some modifications to suit this particular application. The Industrial Hazards and Communications Division of the Bureau has an ongoing program for the development of such a CCTV system. Rather than duplicate this effort in developing a CCTV system, it was decided to evaluate the possibility of utilizing their system for initial probing, while continuing with the develop¬ment of a system which would work in any environment, including the presence of dense smoke. The concept of using sonar for the initial probing of mine passages represents the application of new technology requiring development. The results of such a development effort undertaken during the course of this program are described in the following sections.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated an electrolytic oxidation procedure for extracting lead, zinc, copper, and silver from lead-zinc concentrates. Concentrates slurried in brine were pumped through the anode compartment of electrolytic cells equipped with selective ion diaphragms. Hydrochloric and hypochlorous acids generated in the anode compartment converted the metal sulfides in the concentrates to soluble metal chlorides, sulfate ion, and elemental sulfur. Metal extractions of 92 to 100 pct were obtained from lead-zinc concentrates at an energy consumption ranging from 1.5 to 5.0 kW-hr/lb metal extracted. Sodium hydroxide was formed in the cathode compartment at a current efficiency of >99 pet. Silver and copper were extracted from refractory tetrahedrite minerals, but the process entailed a relatively high energy consumption. Sealing the top of the diaphragm cell utilized the chlorine more effectively, thereby reducing energy consumption 10 to 50 pct.

"Results of a research effort directed towards identifying and measuring the genotoxic properties of respirable particulate matter involved in mining exposures, especially those which may synergistically affect genotoxic hazard, are presented. Particulate matter emissions from a direct injection diesel engine have been sampled and assayed to determine the genotoxic potential as a function of engine operating conditions. Diesel exhaust from a caterpillar 3304 diesel engine, representative of the ones found in underground mines, rated 100 hp at 2200 rpm is diluted in a multi-tube mini-dilution tunnel and the particulate matter is collected on 70 mm fluorocarbon coated glass fiber filters as well as on S"" x 10"" hi-volume filters. A six mode steady state duty cycle was used to relate engine operating conditions to the genotoxic potential. Results to-date on diesel exhaust have indicated that use of a primary component of pulmonary surfactant as a medium for collecting and applying respirable particulate material to cells for mutagenicity testing offers a true representation of in-vivo delivery of such respired aerosols to pulmonary cells and the genetic material within. Protocols have been developed to sample and assay the diesel soot and diesel soot/mineral dust complexes which would not compromise the surf ace and physical properties of the particulate material. Evidence has been gathered to show that diesel soot expresses mutagenic potential as dispersions in DPL in the Ames tests as well as sister chromatid exchange activity in the animal lung fibroblast ·derived V79 cell line. The results are comparable to the standard solvent extraction procedure. INTRODUCTIONDiesel engines are primarily associated with transportation; however, they are also very common in the work place. Of particular concern is the use of diesel engines in mining operations. Currently there are 1,950 diesel machines working in underground coal mines throughout the country. These units are used in 151 mines encompassing nine different states (MSHA, 1991). It is believed the use of diesel powered equipment has contributed to higher productivity in these mines. However, the exhaust from diesel engines operated in underground mines has been a subject of concern during the past decade because of its suspected relationship with health aspects. The particulate matter generated by the diesel engine is of particular concern."

The Rambler mine is in the Douglas mining district, Albany County, Wyo. (fig. 1). The property was first operated about 1870 for gold found in the outcrop of a leached ore body. Copper and metals of the platinum group were discovered, in 1900, or soon thereafter, and intermittent mining was done until 1918, when a fire destroyed the surface plant, and the underground workings caved. The mine has since been idle. The Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from October 1942 to October 1943, with a recess period between November 1942 and August 1943. Ten diamond drill holes, totaling 1,859 linear feet, were drilled on the property (fig. 2). The mine dump was sampled after preparation with a bulldozer. Assay determination and spectrographic analyses disclosed small quantities of copper and metals of the platinum group in the samples. Determinations were made on 11 samples from the diamond drill holes and 23 samples from the mine dump. The assay results and spectrographic analyses are given in tables 1 and 2. The logs of the diamond drill holes are given in an appendix to this report.

"Application of an SEM-based methodology suggests a reason for past contradictory results on the relationship between quartz and coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). Results indicate that coal seams with the same bulk analysis of quartz may have different amounts of surface-availablequartz. Our research shows that the amounts of pure and surface-available quartz in a respirable dust vary directly with the rank of a coal seam, except in the case where rock materials are mined. The estimated amount of surface-available quartz therefore provides a measure of the quartz-related fibrogenic potential of a respirable dust.INTRODUCTIONFrom our previous work (Grayson, 1991), we have shown that the amount of pure quartz in a respirable coal mine dust sample appears to vary directly with the rank of the seam (using fixed carbon as the basis for comparison), except when a substantial rock parting, roof or floor are mined. Our other work (Wallace et al., 1989) showed that high-silica particles in a clay mine may generally be coated with clay, rendering the quartz core non-available for surface reaction in the lung. The combination of these findings led us to hypothesize that the coating phenomenon may indeed be present in coal mines as well, and that a rank relationship may be present regarding this phenomenon. Thus higher rank coal seams may have more surface-available quartz as well as more pure quartz particles in their respirable dusts. The scientific protocol for testing this hypothesis and the results obtained to date are discussed in this paper. Thus far, there is no reason to doubt that the relationship holds."

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe safety and efficacy of permissible storage—battery gathering locomotives are becoming recognized more and more in coal mines. The great mobility of this type of haulage equipment is due to the fact that no trolley wire and bonding of rails are needed; hence wherever there is track and adequate ventilation to dilute properly any dangerous gases, the storage—battery gathering locomotive may go. As coal near the outcrop or the surface is mined out, coal farther from the outcrop or deeper in the ground must be mined, and gassiness of the coal bed often increases under these conditions. The use of electrical equip¬ment capable of giving off arcs or sparks while operating near or at the coal faces constitutes a serious explosion hazard. Often, it is uneconomical or impracticable to use animal haulage, and locomotives must be employed. The operator should consider the safest and most economical unit; permissible equipment is the answer to this problem, and storage—battery locomotives are the only permissible electric haulage units.A comparison of permissible storage—battery locomotives with cable—reel locomotives of the latest enclosed ""explosion—tested"" type has been made at the Keystone No. 1 mine of the Houston Collieries Co., at Keys one, W. The alkali metals , sodium and potassium , and more particularly sodium , occur abundantly in chemical combination with other elements . The elements themselves are available in metallic form but are so active chemically that they oxidize rapidly in contact merely with the air . Potassium will even catch fire spontaneously in air , and both the metals will decompose water with explosive violence . Inasmuch as they are almost as soft as wax they are not suitable for the structural or other mechanical uses characteristic of ordinary metals , and consequently the uses of these elements even in the metallic condition are based upon chemical rather than physical qualities . Sodium metal is used largely as a commercial reducing agent , but potassium metal is rarely found outside of chemical laboratories . Numerous salts and other compounds of these elements enter largely into world trade and are commercially very important , but none of these compounds except sodium peroxide and sodium cyanide are made economically from the metals . Sodium is generally considered as rather an uncommon metal , but in point of annual tonnage produced it is far more important than mercury , magnesium , molybdenum , bismuth, cadmium, cobalt , gold , silver , or the various rarer metals .

The Bureau of Mines investigated two techniques for removing CaO from scheelite (CaW04) prior to electrolysis. In the first technique, a crude tungstic oxide (WO3) containing 0.15-percent lime (CaO) was prepared by digesting scheelite concentrates in hot hydrochloric acid. This oxide was used as cell feed to produce tungsten of 99.9-percent purity. The second technique used a high-temperature, two-phase separation, resulting in extraction of 99 percent of the WO3 in the halide-tungstate phase, while 90 percent of the CaO was retained in the silicate phase. Tungsten of 99.9-percent purity was deposited from the halide-tungstate melt after B203 and NaPO3 were added to form an electrolyte. The two methods were compared with a previously developed technique of depositing tungsten from scheelite concentrate fed directly to the electrolytic cell.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the methane content of a coal, which depends primarily upon rank and pressure, from the adsorption equation V =kpn, where k and n are constants related to rank. By incorporating corrections for moisture, ash, and temperature, and estimating pressure and temperature as a function of depth, the methane content of coal in place can be estimated from the following equation: [ ] Values calculated with this equation generally are in reasonable agreement with direct determinations. By assuming a standard moisture and ash content, and using the hydrostatic head to estimate pressure, a graph of rank and depth versus gas content was constructed. Although estimated values were consistently high for several high-volatile bituminous coals from an area where the pressure is known to be less than hydrostatic, the estimated methane content for most coals shows reasonable agreement with values determined by the direct method.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of manganese from known domestic occurrences. Eight of these deposits were found to have demonstrated resources totaling 420 million metric tons with an average grade of 10 percent contained manganese. They were found to be submarginally subeconomic. Economic evaluations of the eight deposits resulted in incentive prices ranging from $8 to almost $35 per long ton unit (22.4 pounds) of contained manganese. Comparing these prices with the current market value of $1.70 per long ton unit of manganese clearly illustrates the submarginal nature of the domestic ores analyzed. These domestic resources would probably not be developed except in the case of an extreme national emergency. Production from the eight deposits would take 3 to 6 years to develop, and the final product would be manganese ore concentrate, which could be used in the production of ferromanganese. If preproduction development began in 1981, annual production would peak in 1987 with 900,000 metric tons of recoverable manganese. Thereafter, production would see a steady decline unless additional resources were located or technologic improvements were made to allow processing of lower grade material, or unless mining and processing of ocean manganese nodules began to take place.

Analysis of the data produced by a wide-band, sensitive, horizontal, biaxial motion sensor has revealed several distinctive patterns before, during, and after a roof fall. The signals prior to the roof fall are similar in spectra, but one thousand times larger in amplitude, than those after the roof fall. Immediately preceding the roof fall, by two to twelve hours, five events occurred which were larger in amplitude and lower in frequency than even the large pre-roof fall background signals. An interpretation of these events is offered.

The Bureau of Mines investigated chemical methods for producing high- purity gold from precious-metal-bearing zinc precipitates and steel wool cathodes. Precious-metal-bearing zinc precipitates and steel wool cathodes are unrefined products from conventional cyanidation and heap leaching-cyanidation operations. The zinc precipitates contained 14,40 pct Au and 0.35 pct Ag. The precious-metal-bearing steel wool cathodes contained 20.65 pct Au and 4.84 pct Ag. The precipitates and cathodes were treated with dilute acid to solubilize the silver and/or base metals. The gold-bearing residue was leached in dilute aqua reqia to solubilize the gold. High-purity gold was precipitated from the aqua regia solution with oxalic acid, sulfurous acid, sodium bisulfite, and gaseous sulfur dioxide. The leaching-precipitation experiments recovered 99.9 pct of the gold. The gold precipitates ranged in fineness from 997 to 999 fine. The chemical refining method provides a viable technique for the smaller operator to produce high-purity gold without using pyrometallurgical refining methods.

Use of digital computers makes possible a more efficient and complete analysis of data from a mineral deposit . This computer program was written and used during an investigation into the efficiency of methods of computing grade and tonnage of ore , wherein it was necessary to make repeated computations involving different combinations of data . Wettability measurements and laboratory waterflood tests were compared under a wide variety of conditions. Experiments were conducted with synthetic and natural crude oils, treated and untreated outcrop and oilfield sandstone cores, and synthetic brines with and without caustic, detergent, or phosphate additives. Measurements were made on equilibrated and unequilibrated systems at 77° and 150° F. Wettability was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines method from capillary pressure curves determined with a centrifuge. The waterflood data were fitted by empirical curves; the parameters of the curves characterize primary and subordinate production and also give the ultimate oil recovery. Results showed that wettability measurements at 77° F were useful predictors of recovery efficiency in waterflood tests run at both temperatures. Oil recovery in the early stages of waterflooding increased with increasing water wettability; however, the ultimate recovery was highest at a slightly oil-wet condition. The oil displaced at highest speed in the centrifuge was correlated with ultimate recovery in waterflood tests. Chemical additives to the brine sometimes lowered wettability and also sometimes improved waterflood recovery, but wettability and recovery were not correlated with additives present. The effect of additives on recovery in waterflooding was best seen in water-oil ratio curves.

In June 1942 , ' the Bureau of Mines selected the Zonia copper mine , near Kirkland , Yavapai County , Arizona , as a property meriting investigation in connection with its search for supplies of strategic minerals for use in the war . The following month , representatives of the War Production . Board conferred with Bureau officials and requested that the property be explored with the object of determining the tonnage and grade of ore that could be brought into production quickly and mined cheaply by open-pit methods . The work wa's designed to verify information submitted by the owners in support of an application for a Government loan. It was essential that the investigations be completed promptly , so that operations might be planned and copper produced for war needs . The investigations called for surface trenching , diamond drilling , and check sampling of underground workings . Unable to purchase equipment for trenching without considerable delay , the Bureau saved time by borrowing most of the necessary items from the Golden Queen mine of the Gold Fields Development Co. at Mohave , Calif. This company , whose engineers had sampled some of the old trenches , had a tentative agreement with the owners to operate and manage the Zonia mine in event the loan was granted . Additional equipment was borrowed from two Governmental agencies . The exploratory work , completed in 16 weeks , was carried on 7 days a week .
