"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines conducted physical and chemical beneficiation studies on three samples of waste investment casting molds to devise a method to liberate and recover zircon. Rod mill grinding, autogenous attrition grinding, and caustic leaching were liberation methods inves-tigated. Flotation, gravity separation, and caustic leaching and sizing were recovery methods investigated. Flotation techniques produced con-centrates containing up to 74.2 pct zircon with a zircon recovery of 53.4 pct. Gravity concentration produced concentrates containing up to 98.6 pct zircon; however, recovery of the zircon was only 57 pct. Caustic leaching and sizing produced concentrates containing up to 98 pct zircon with attendant recoveries of 81 pct.

Extraction of silver from silver mill tailings by an electrolytic oxidation procedure was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Various parameters affecting silver extraction, such as electrolysis time, particle size, and dissolution of the silver as the tetrachloro or cyanide complex, were studied at 30° C with an electrolyte concentration of 20 weight-percent sodium chloride. Resulting silver extractions ranged from 77 to 90 percent, depending on the tailings being treated. Concomitant extraction of mercury ranged between 90 and 95 percent. Power consumption was 52 to 90 kilowatt-hours per ton for the tailings investigated. Comparative experiments using direct cyanidation resulted in extraction of 46 to 82 percent of the silver and 20 percent of the mercury. Cyanide consumption ranged from 3.3 to 9.4 pounds per ton of tailings, depending on the tailings being treated. Silver and mercury were recovered from leach solutions by precipitation on iron powder, followed by conventional distillation and fire refining steps.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a method for electrodepositing titanium diboride from a molten salt bath. Initially, the electrolyte is a mixture of LiBO2, NaB02, Na2 Ti03 , Li2Ti03, and Ti02? The cell is operated at 900° C in a dry, inert atmosphere with consumable anodes of titanium or hot-pressed titanium diboride (TiB2) powder. Agitation of the electrolyte is essential. Current densities may be 6 to 9 amperes per square decimeter (amp/dm2) with titanium anodes and 9 to 30 amp/dm2 with titanium diboride anodes. A current density of 6 amp/dm2 is equivalent to a plating rate of about 35 micrometers per hour. The adherence of the TiB2 deposit varies with the substrate material. It is most adherent on molybdenum and on 4130 steel that has been preplated with copper and nickel, less adherent on nickel, and still less adherent on Inconel and on 4130 steel without the preplate. Cathode and anode reactions are suggested.

This paper is one of a series giving the results of metallurgical tests conducted by: the Alaska station of the Federal Bureau of Iſines, on the recovery of gold from the black sands of placer clean-ups. The data given in this report were obtained from tests on a lot of black sand from a property located on St. Patrick Creek, Fairbanks mining district, Territory of Alaska. This property comprises the Sagan Fraction and adjoining bench claims, and is being operated by J. A. Lillie. The sand ad already been treated at the mine by amalgamation. A sample taken by Mr. Lillie and assayed at the station showed that the gold still remain ing amounted to ll cents per pound. As this gold content was sufficiently high to justify further treatment of the same, 770 pounds were shipped to the station for testing. The reader will note that the gold content is given in cents per pouni, rather than per ton. This is in conformity with practice in the district in valuing black sands, as the quantity obtained at any one time is small, much less than one ton. . The sand consisted principally of schist and quartz, with very little ilmenite and garnet; and no magnetite or sulphides. Most of the gold present as contaminated with quartz, as the free particles of gold had been removed by amalgamation at the mine.

This document contains most of the materials needed to use the exercise. The main part of the document is the instructor's copy. It tells how to use the exercise, presents the objectives, the master answer sheet, the scoring key, and discussion notes to be used following the exercise. The next section summarizes results from field tests of the exercise, and reports the miners' evaluation of the activity. The last part of this document is three appendices. Appendix A is the exercise problem booklet. This booklet can be duplicated locally. The booklets are reusable. One is needed for every person in the classroom. Appendix B is the answer sheet. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the most common occupational illness in the United States, with 30 million workers exposed to excessive noise levels [NIOSH 1996] every day. Of particular concern is the mining industry; which has the highest prevalence of hazardous noise exposure of any major industry sector [Tak et al. 2009] and is second only to the railroad industry in prevalence of work-ers reporting hearing difficulty [Tak and Calvert 2008]. This document is for operators, safety personnel, and mechanics in the mining industry who are not specialists in noise control engineering or acoustics. Evaluations of successful and unsuccessful attempts at controlling noise on several large, underground metal mining machines are detailed to illustrate the basic principles of noise control. Once personnel understand the guidelines and principles of noise control, they will be able to ¦evaluate the extent of a noise problem; ¦determine the best approach to the problem; and ¦apply the most appropriate solution. Because of the insidious nature of NIHL, it can go unnoticed until a considerable loss of hearing has occurred. In some cases, diagnosis is delayed because an exposed individual claims to have become accustomed to the noise. In reality, that person may have already suffered irreversible hearing loss. Humans can hear sounds in the frequency range from about 20 to 20,000 Hertz (Hz). Within this range, NIHL usually begins in the frequency region around 4,000?6,000 Hz, the upper levels of the speech region. The first noticeable symp-toms include difficulty understanding higher pitched voices, such as the voices of females and children, and difficulty understanding certain consonant sounds, which are primarily high frequency in nature. The extent of NIHL varies depending on the level and duration of noise exposure and on an individual?s susceptibility; despite having similar noise exposure, individuals can experience differing degrees of hearing loss, or none at all. NIHL is almost always preventable. To reduce or eliminate the possibility of NIHL, an individual?s noise environment must be analyzed and appropriate action taken to reduce noise exposure.

"Properties and Uses.Iceland spar is a name given to a pure crystallized form of calcite (CaCo3) which is sufficiently transparent and free of defects to be used in the manufacture of optical instruments. While the actual requirements are small, the degree of purity and physical perfection demanded renders it somewhat difficult to obtain suitable material.The properties of value in Iceland spar are its transparency combined with double refraction. It is used in the manufacture of polarizing microscopes, saccharimeters, colorimeters and photometers. Its most important use is in the manufacture of Nicol prisms, which constitute an essential part of every polarizing microscope. The principle governing the construction of the Nicol prism is as follows:Ordinary light in passing through a crystal of calcite is resolved into two rays of plane polarized light vibrating in planes at right angles to each other and having different indices of refraction. Thus the two rays follow different paths through the crystal. The prism of Iceland spar is cut diagonally and cemented together again with a transparent cement having an index of refraction intermediate between the two rays passing through the prism. Canada balsam is employed for this purpose. The prism is cut at such an angle that the ray having the greatest index of refraction meets the surface of the balsam at an angle greater than the angle of total reflection, and it is thus deflected to the side of the prism, while the second ray passes through. Thus one of the rays is eliminated and polarized light vibrating in a single plane is obtained."

"INTRODUCTION This report presents factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines in the course of an investigation of the Antler mine in the Cedar Valley mining district, Mohave County, Ariz.The Antler property was first examined by Thomas L. Chapman, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, on December 18, 1943, and January 28, 1944. In June 1945, A. H. Wadsworth, Jr., and R. L. Griggs, geologists, Federal Geo¬logical Survey, examined the Antler mine and several other mines in the district. Both Chapman and Wadsworth recommended diamond drilling of the Antler property to determine the character and extent of ore deposition.In October 1946, the surface and underground workings were surveyed by George Huseman, Mining engineer, and T. M. Romslo, project engineer. The following month Eldred. D. Wilson, geologist of the Arizona Bureau of Mines, assisted by the project engineer, mapped the geology. Subsequently trails were built to drilling sites and diamond drilling started January 16, 1947. Responding to the increasing concern for dust control in metal and nonmetal mining, the Bureau of Mines investigated typical dust reduction efficiencies of wet bar cutter machines as they are presently being used in salt mines. Wet bar techniques have previously been used in coal mines, achieving dust reduction efficiencies ranging from 11 to 60 pct. Two different wet bar techniques, namely, the front spray and the water trickle, have been studied as they are currently being used in two salt mines. Preliminary results show that the dust reduction efficiencies have a large variation (0 to 66 pct), as is the case for wet bars used in coal. However, whereas wet bars in coal required 3 to 4 gpm water consumption, wet bars in salt obtained similar efficiencies with only 0.1 to 0.4 gpm. The most reliable data obtained during this study show that the front spray system consistently performs at efficiencies between 41 and 66 pct, with an average of 54 pct. The results indicate that, although wet bar cutter techniques in salt mines are a relatively simple and inexpensive means of dust control with a minimum of water consumption, further investigation should be performed to fully evaluate and optimize wet bar cutter dust reduction efficiencies.

Ability to signal the hoisting engineer in shaft mines is of utmost importance from the standpoint of safety and economy. The problem of signalling from the cages and especially from the moving cages has received too little attention from mine operators; however, this problem has been given considerable thought and attention by at least one large metal-mining company in Utah which has devised successful, economical, and safe systems of signalling from the cage whether it is moving or at rest. A Report of Investigations on "Methods used in Utah for signalling mine hoists from moving cages," by C. A. Allen, then a metal-mining engineer in the Bureau of Mines, was issued in June, 1920. As this report contains interesting history of systems of signalling from moving mine hoists, and describes several systems then in use, it is here quoted in full.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effect of refractory oxide additions, introduced in soluble form, on the high-temperature properties of 90- and 98-pct-MgO brick. Brick samples were soaked in solutions containing Al, Ca, Cr, Co, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, Sr, Sn, Ti, or Zr ions. Additions to 98-pct-MgO brick did not generally result in statistically significant property improvements. Statistically significant improvements were noted in hot modulus of rupture (MOR), slag resistance, and spalling resistance of the 90-pct-MgO brick for additions of Al, Mg, or Sn. High-temperature performance of treated 90-pct-MgO refractories was equal to or approached that of 98-pct-MgO brick. The marked improvements due to tin were obtained with additions of only 1.14 wt pct Sn02.

"Ventilation is one of the most important features of coal mining, and if a mine is exceptionally gassy it is often difficult to ventilate it in such a way as to make it safe. The general system of splitting the main air current so that two, three, or more sets of room entries are ventilated by the same current of air does not provide a safe method if non-permissible electrical equipment, such as cable-reel, crab-reel, or trolley locomotives are used on gathering haulage, or if open-type hoist or pump motors are used. The problem has been greatly simplified at the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. at Crucible, Pennsylvania.The system is not only applicable to the room-and-pillar method of mining, but it may be adopted for any panel system of mining. There also appears to be a definite application in mechanized mining, where the rapid extraction often results in inadequate attention to ventilation and where the gassiness of the section generally increases because, as compared to hand loading, the methane has less time to drain off. The material in this Information Circular was presented at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) open-industry briefing held during the 2004 Northwest Mining Association conference in Spokane, WA. The open-industry briefing discussed results of recently completed and on-going mine safety- and health-related research conducted at NIOSH’s Spokane and Pittsburgh Research Laboratories on the human side of mining—the miner. The first paper sets the stage for what mining has achieved and what we mean by “getting to zero.” The second paper, “Help Experienced Miners Become Great On-the-Job Trainers,” distinguishes between experienced miners and trainers. This paper provides some key concepts for turning great miners into great trainers. “The Power of Story-Telling in Getting Through to Miners” explains the history and importance of stories in the culture and training of miners. Finally, “Understanding Self in Stressful Working Environments,” describes the personal and social aspects of the working environment, much of which parallels familial theories. The downward trend of deaths in U.S. mining has been remarkable. The number of miners killed or injured each year has decreased steadily over the past 100 years. Some charts show these trends overlain with important events such as World War II and the Mine Safety and Health Act. However, this downward trend in mining fatalities has flattened out. How can you get to zero accidents? Do you concentrate on technological advances and equipment maintenance to avoid malfunctions? Do you concentrate on developing work processes and organizational structures that minimize risk? Do you combine them and take a systems approach that links one to the other with an evaluative loop? Safety efforts in mining have used all of these approaches. What more can we do to get to zero? Getting to zero will require two objectives: A clear and unshakeable belief that it can be done and attention to the human side of mining. Getting to zero is not a new idea; it has been used by mine companies and safety professionals for years as the safety goal. But getting to zero is not so much a physical goal as it is a belief that there are no insurmountable barriers to achieving the goal.

"Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by alveolar macrophages (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In order to determine if eicosanoid production and cytokine production are altered in AM obtained from coal miners, we compared production of prostaglandin E2 (PCE2), thromboxane A2 (TXA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1B ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNfa.) by cultured AM from normal human subjects and coal miners. The recovery of AM from miners' lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage was significantly greater than that from control subjects. Mean eicosanoid and cytokine production by AM from active miners was also increased compared to AM from control subjects, but this increase was not statistically significant. AM from control subjects produced significantly more TXA2 and TNFa. when exposed to lipopolysaccharide than did AM from miners. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor suprofen reduced PGE1 and TXA1 production and TNF0t. release but had no effect on LTB4 production or IL-1B release by miners' AM. The lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid attenuated TNFa release, as well as that of LTB4, but had no effect on IL-1B release. Inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK 38,485 also reduced TNFa release by active miners ' AM but had no effect on PGE1, LTB, production, or IL-1 f3 release. The results of these studies suggest that occupational inhalation of coal dust may increase total lung eicosanoid and cytokine levels and reduce the reactivity of AM to bacterial endotoxin. Furthermore, coal dust-induced changes in both eicosanoid and cytokine release may be subject to pharmacological modulation.The alveolar macrophage (AM) is a primary defensive cell in the lung and is one of the first cell types to encounter inhaled mineral dust. The response of the AM to invading foreign material is designed to enhance the defensive capacity of the lung. However, in the case of occupational inhalation of mineral dust particles, this response may be inappropriate, resulting not in the defense of the lung but in chronic inflammation and fibrosis (Rom et al., 1987; Takemura et al., 1989). The reaction of the AM to chronic mineral dust exposure may involve the exaggerated release of paracrine mediators of lung function, including eicosanoids (oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid) and peptides, including cytokines and growth factors (Sibille & Reynolds, 1990). Eicosanoids are involved in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, vascular permeability, fibroblast growth, and the recruitment of additional immune cells to the alveolar space (Barnard et al., 1992; Elias et al., 1985; Scott et al., 1982). AM-derived cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 B) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TN Fa) have a variety of biological activities including the regulation of fibroblast growth and proliferation (Becker et al., 1989; Libby et al., 1989; Schmidt et al., 1984). Interestingly, in vitro studies with macrophages suggest that the production of cytokines may be linked to eicosanoid production, in particular that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) may down-regulate IL-1 f3 and TN Foe production by the AM (Bonta et al., 1989; Kunkel et al., 1986; Monick et al., 1987)."

THE MINERAL INDUSTRIES had a near-record year in 1950, as rising industrial activity in general, greatly accentuated by the outbreak of hostilities in Korea in midyear, called forth increasing supplies of mineral fuels and raw materials. The aggregate value of mineral production was second only to that in 1948, and the aggregate physical volume was exceeded only in 1948 and 1947. Lower coal production accounted for the failure to surpass these earlier years. Growth of production was fairly constant throughout the year, especially for crude petroleum; its physical output for the year as a whole exceeded that of 1949 by 7 percent. According to Federal Reserve Board indexes, other relative gains were 16 percent for coal, 9 percent for fuels in general, and 17 percent for metals. The increase for mining in general was of the order of 10 percent. This was not quite as large as the general increase in industrial production but clearly reflected the total-industrial trend (see fig. 1).

A small-scale laboratory coke oven similar to those described by Swiniarski, Cryan, and Altieri and Fuchs, Sandhoff, Taylor, and Gauger was built by the Bureau of Mines in 1943. Tests made since that time have indicated that such a small oven is of questionable value in predicting the coking pressures to be expected in commercial coke ovens. This summary of the work done has been prepared at the suggestion of the Advisory Committee to the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association Survey of Carbonizing Prop¬erties of American Coals.
