As part of its program to increase the domestic availability of critical minerals, the Bureau of Mines conducted characterization and beneficiation studies on a St. Johns County, Fla., phosphate ore that was mined by borehole mining. Results revealed that the ore from this test mine was mostly sand-size carbonate-fluorapatite and quartz and contained 24.6 percent P205. Concentration by various flotation techniques produced phosphate concentrates that ranged, in percent, from 30.0 to 31.4 P205, 0.73 to 0.80 MgO, and 2.8 to 7.2 acid insoluble. Recovery of the phosphate from the ore ranged from 89.4 to 96.3 percent.

Laboratory semicontinuous and continuous heavy liquid cyclone separation pilot plant tests were made to determine the feasibility of producing a high-grade kyanite concentrate from a kyanite-quartz rock sample from Graves Mountain, Ga. Use of a three-stage heavy liquid cyclone circuit demonstrated that a 96.4-to 99.0-percent kyanite concentrate could be obtained with recoveries of 95.5 to 96.7 percent. The test work showed that by steam stripping with 6.9 tons of steam per ton of ore and two stages of detergent scrubbing the residual TBE content of kyanite cyclone products was 0.22 pound per ton of ore.

The surface tension from 240° to 844° C and the density from 236° to 583° C of 99.999 percent purity liquid tin has been measured using the maximum-bubble-pressure method. Results for surface tension (y) show y (dynes/em) = 566.84 -4.76 X 10-2 T (° C) with a standard error of 1.9 dynes/cm. Results for density (p) show p (g/cm3) = 7.16 -6.3 X 10-4 T (° C) with a standard error of 0.012 g/cm3. Comparisons with other data found in the literature are discussed. The experimental results are considered to be as good as any data presently available.

Underground and strip mining (6,7) produce different hydrologic environments. Many underground mines are below the zone that is completely saturated with water and the mine openings may cause new and continuous contact between sulfurous material and water which flows from the saturated zone to the workings. Strip mines are usually above the zone of continuous saturation and contact between sulfurous material and water is generally restricted to periods of precipitation. A full appreciation of the problem of water pollution caused by drainage from deep mines requires a basic understanding of occurrences and movement of water in the ground and the modes of ground water entrance into mining areas.

Amyl nitrite (C5H11NO2) is a pale-yellow liquid with an ethereal fruity odor and a pungent aromatic taste. Its use in first-aid treatment of cyanide poisoning has been suggested by Chen and his coworkers. Although not the most effective treatment, it is the only one that does not require intravenous injections and is, therefore, very suitable as a preliminary measure, which only involves breaking a capsule near the patient's nose until intravenous injections can be given. In the case of the sodium nitrite -sodium thiosulfate treatment, for instance, such injections require about 15 minutes. As amyl nitrite "Pearls" (small capsules containing liquid amyl nitrite) are placed in many first-aid kits by various companies that handle, store, or use hydrogen cyanide gas, it appeared advisable to investigate the explosion hazards of this material in air and oxygen. Accordingly, tests were made to determine the limits of flammability, temperature range of flammability of amyl nitrite saturated with air and with oxygen, and minimum ignition temperatures of this material in air and in oxygen.

"This paper presents an analysis of fracture mechanisms in coal subjected to bi-axial state of stresses, indentation of laterally confined coal specimen. Coal specimens were loaded to failure by the straight wedge indenters at various lateral confinement pressures. Strain distribution and acoustic emission characteristics of coal specimens under stress were recorded. The influence lines of vertical forces acting on the horizontal straight boundary of the coal specimen for each type of wedge indenter have been established using holographic interferometry technique. The effects of wedge indenter angle, confinement pressure, and coal anisotropy on fracture types, failure modes, and post-failure conditions were studied. The results indicated that combined application of holographic interferometry and acoustic emission monitoring techniques is not only suitable ·for studying deformability of heterogeneous and microscopically discontinuous material under stress but it also enhances the mode of fracture during the post failure stage. INTRODUCTIONOne of the relevant processes in the coal cutting technology is the application of indentation theories. Since most cutting tools in the coal industry are wedge shaped most of the indentation research is found for a wedge shaped tool.A wide range of behavior is found in different rocks subjected to the wedge penetration. A rock which is elastic brittle at standard pressure might become elastic plastic at high confining pressure (Gnirk and Cheatham, 1963). It was also observed that some rocks will merely be crushed and indented by a wedge whereas others will crack and form chips, furthermore the existence or non-existence of chips depends mostly on the geometry of the indenter, type of rock and the depth of penetration (Evans and Murrel, 1958). However, coal cutting technology is mostly explained by models which use rigid wedge to penetrate into a brittle material in which both crushing and chipping will occur (Evans and Murrel, 1958, 1962)."

After thoroughly covering the health and safety training subjects required under Title 30, Part 48, of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), mine operators often find themselves with little or no time left in the class schedule for other important topics. This paper discusses a technique developed in partnership with RAG Twenty mile Coal Co., Oak Creek, CO, for incorporating employee participation at all levels in fire prevention and safe equipment operation training outside of traditional classrooms. The process involves development of training modules consisting of short, 5- to 7-minute videotapes coupled with toolbox talks that ground the content of the videos within the context of a miner’s workplace.

Ecuador's real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 6% in 1976 despite persistent shortages of electrical power and essential fuels, which caused factory slow-downs and shutdowns. Petroleum export earnings, which made up more than 50% of total export value in 19716, totaled $565 million, a 9% increase over those of 1975. A new 60,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery at Esmeraldas was scheduled to go on- stream in mid- 1 97 7, operating entirely on Ecuadorean crude. Corpración Estatal Petró1era Ecualtoriana (CEPE) started construction of a 600-kilometer network of product pipelines which was scheduled to be completed in 1977 to coincide with the completion of the refinery.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to determine the response to sulfatization of diverse low-grade manganiferous materials in the iron formation of the Cuyuna district. In line with this objective a bench-scale sulfatizing procedure was developed that was less expensive and more rapid than pilot-plant methods. Samples from the central and south- western parts of the North range were tested. Results of evaluating a total of 46 pelletized samples, originating in areas with an estimated potential resource of 94 million long tons with a manganese content of 7 percent, indicates that approximately 87 percent of the manganese may be recovered as a synthetic manganese ore. This is equivalent to more than 12 million long tons of a metallurgical-grade ore, containing 46 percent manganese. It is anticipated that a premium product, containing over 50 percent manganese, may be obtained by sulfatizing procedures. This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legisla- tion and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Switzerland has been prepared from the best information available in ashington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consuler officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Sitzerland is a small country in which little mining is done, yet it has a voluminous body of mining legislation. There are two salt-mining districts in Switzerland; that at Bez, Canton of Vaud, belongs to the Canton but the deposit is worked by a private company; and those at Schweizerhalle, Rheinfelden and Ryburg are worked by a joint stock company formed by the Cantons interested. Iron ore is mined at Gonzen, Canton of St. Gallen, and large beds of gypsum are worked, mainly for domestic consumption. In general, however, although many kinds of minerals are said to have been found in Switzerland, mining operations are irreguler end relatively unimportant. Even during the world war only about 2,500 persons were employed in mining establishments and most of these were in under round stone quarries. On the other hand, the republic comprises 22 Cantons, of which 3 are divided, making 25 units, and in the absence of generel Federal legislation, each of these units virtually has its own distinct mining la Under these circumstances, it is obviously inadvisable to review the mining lars of Switzerland in the same detail as those of other countries which Lave been digested in this series. For the lars of individual Cantons, as well as for a more comprehensive summary of the Swiss legislation as a whole, the reader is referred to a recent German publication." In laboratory testing, the Bureau of Mines established criteria by which common resin-grouted roof bolting systems can be evaluated and compared. Ultimate strength and stiffness were determined for nonten-sioned full-column, point-anchor, tensioned full-column, and debondable resin-grouted bolts, and for variations on full-column boltsn Bolt per-formances were compared using the performance of the 3/4-in full-column resin-grouted bolt as the standard. New and innovative systems can also be qualitatively compared against this standard. Since the medium into which a resin-grouted bolt is installed is one of the most important parameters affecting bolt performance, various host mediums were used in the testing: sandstone, concrete, simulated coal, simulated shale, and plaster. Bolt performances expected in other mediums can be inferred from the response patterns obtained in these mediums. Results indicate several functional differences among bolt types. Where resistance to shear is important, point-anchor bolts may outperform nontensioned full-column bolts at a lower cost. In medium-to soft-strength rock, tensioned full-column bolts perform best. Also, varying the resin-steel ratio seems to have little effect on the properties of a full-column bolt, when proper resin mixing is ensured.

"SummaryAs part of an effort.to understand the mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal, which is important in studies of respirable dust due to mining, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density (SEO) theory were applied to calculate the crush zone size under a cutting tool in coal. This · zone is the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range. The model used in these calculations is a boundary element program containing a failure criterion based on the SEO theory. The boundary element program calculates linear elastic stresses at numerous points in the coal material ahead of a cutting bit. These stresses arc then input to a subroutine called critical ftaw length and orientation (CFLO) which uses the SED theory to determine the CFLO for a small crack at the boundary element stress computation point. The extent of crushing is based on earlier postulates about . the role of inherent flaws in a fragmentation process. To form 1 to 10 µm fragments requires firstly a local stress strong enough to activate flaws with a characteristic length less than 1 to 10 µm and secondly, a flaw density sufficient to provide an average spacing between flaws also on the order of 1 to 10 µm. The locus of active lO µm ftaws represents the maximum possible extent of fine fragmentation in the 10 µm or less size range assuming that a sufficient inherent flaw density exists. The approach offers a first order approximation to the extent of crushing under a tool tip. The size and shape of the crush zone volume is affected by the attack angle and geometry of the tool.IntroductionFine fragment generation in the 1 to 10 µm size range under the action of a generic coal cutting tool may be explained on the basis of fracture mechanics which suggests two major sources of fine fragments: first in a crush zone near the tool tip and second by shear fracturing. along major macrocrack surfaces (Zipf and Bieniawski, 1988a). In this paper, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density theory are used to calculate the crush zone size. This zone represents the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range and understanding the mechanical factors controlling its size represents a first step toward using fracture mechanics to characterize the ·tendency of various coals to produce undesirable fine fragments."

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free - swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples ( samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1962. In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 7,114 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . Gold and precious stones were mined in Egypt in prehistoric times. This mining, carried on at intervals, extended over thousands of years, until about 1300 A. D. Then ensued a dormant period of several hundred yoars. In the mean- time Europe made great rogress in mining practice, metallurgy, and geology and sent out various expeditions during the nineteenth century to investigate ancient mines. But the exploratory work produced no material results, and not until the beginning of the present century did actual mining recommence. The reopening of old gold mines in Rhodesia aroused interest in London and Paris, and these cities provided the capital necessary for the investigation of the ancient minee in West Africa and Egypt. Speculation resulted in the division of most of the uncultivated area of Egypt and the Sudan into huge concessions, and a number of expeditions were made; but after an unprecedented activity in West Africa, roaction set in, and the flow of capital ceased. Those of the oil-shale operators in this country who are sincerely attempting to make a real industry out of oil-shale developments, are anxious to obtain fundamental data on the retorting of oil-shale; particularly as regards the effect of certain variable factors in the process of retorting on the quantity and quality of products yielded from oil shales when they are subjected to destructive distillation. From careful examination of a con siderable number of suggested processes for treating oil shales and the con flicting ideas on which they are designed, it seems probable that accurate information of a fundamental nature is highly essential to the successful establishment of an oil-shale industry in this country. . Accordingly, the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the State of Colorado, is undertaking to furnish some definite and impartial information of this type through investigations now under way at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo. A retort for the distillation of oil from oil shale has been designed and installed, together with the necessary auxiliary equipment for controlling and determining variable factors of distillation, and for recovering and de termining the quantity and quality of the products yielded from the shales. The retort is of such a nature that conditions of retorting can be accurately . and completely controlled, and varied at will. It is not designed as a com mercial retort, but only for research purposes. A testing laboratory with equipment necessary for the examination of the shales, physically and chemic ally, and the products yielded by them, has also been fitted up . The material used in the investigations is oil shale obtained from the DeBeque, Colorado, shale field. It yields on distillation in the Bureau of Mines testing apparatus, about 42 gallons of oil to the ton, and is there fore a fairly representative sample of the shales that probably will be first worked in Colorado. The shale used will be as uniform as possible in character and oil yield and will all be obtained from the same seam at the same point, in order to avoid the introduction of unnecessary variable factors in the tests and to render results strictly comparable •

The current use of Mid - Continent crude oil for the manufacture of war products , such as aviation gasoline and lubricating cil , has caused an acute shortage of available supply from established sources . Therefore , refiners who heretofore have had no reason to use West Texas crude oils now are considering them as charging stock and need more information concerning their characteristics . The Bureau of Mines has published several reports3/ giving analyses of the most important of these crude oils . However, to make the applicable data in these publications readily available to refiners , the present compilation of analyses of West Texas crude oils has been prepared . Data showing the effect of catalytic desulfurization of naphthas from West Texas crude oils have been presented in a restricted Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations . These analyses were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell , chief, Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, Bureau of Mines , Washington, D. C. , and N. A. C. Smith, supervising engineer , Fetroleum Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines , Bartlesville, Okla . , and under the direct supervision of Harold M. External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle inter-action with organic collectors and thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200-to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode to examine the potential distribution in the bed. The dissolved oxygen concentration of the electrolyte had a significant effect on the potential profile across the mineral bed. Low oxygen levels were necessary to achieve uniform electrochemical potential distributions. Flotation separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture by controlled potential was achieved using ethylxanthate, but the flotation behavior of chalcocite and pyrite from the mixture does not follow the flotation behavior of the individual minerals. That is, the presence of another sulfide mineral alters the flotation behavior with ethylxan-thate. Galvanic interaction due to mineral-to-mineral contact between chalcocite and pyrite contributes to differences in the recovery. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on pyrite flotation by activating flotation below -0.1 V (saturated calomel electrode) and depressing flotation above -0.1 V. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

Difficulty has been encountered in making thermodynamic calculations of metallurgical reactions involving interoxidic compounds of the ferroalloy elements because of the serious lack of most thermodynamic data for these substances. This Bureau of Mines report (the first of a planned series dealing with entropies of vanadates, tungstates, and molybdates) presents low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropy values at 298.15° K. for three crystalline sodium vanadates--metavanadate (NaV03), orthovanadate (Na3VO4), and pyro-vanadate (Na4V2O7). The results are combined with data for the constituent oxides and elements to obtain entropies of formation of the vanadates. Previous to this report only one vanadate had been studied Similarly, ammonium metavanadate.4/
