Abstract-Underground mines are typically extensive labyrinths that employ many people working over an area of many square miles; exten¬sive analysis of mine-communications systems has identified specific problem areas, in particular the excessive times required to locate key personnel underground, the inadequacy of existing phone systems in terms of capacity and privacy, and the inability to communicate with men on the move with wireless communications, as is taken for granted on the surface. A review is presented of the existing systems, the prob¬lem definition, and the various approaches that have been or are being investigated to solve these problems. Approximately 45% of U.S. coal is produced from underground mining. The use of diesel engines to power under- ground mining equipment has steadily increased over the past four decades in an effort to improve mine safety and productivity. Several advantages realized with the use of diesel-powered mining equipment in underground coal mines are listed in Table I. The primary disadvantage of using diesel equipment in underground coal mines is that diesel exhaust emissions can contaminate mine ventilation air. The major constituents of diesel exhaust are gaseous emissions (which include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur oxides and unburned hydrocarbons) and diesel particulate matter (DPM). The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has incorporated threshold limit values for all gaseous components of diesel exhaust into their regulations. These have been established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.

Eliminate the occurrence of false fire detection alarms caused by the operation of diesel-powered vehicles in underground coal mines. Approach Fire detection systems used in underground mines are based on measurements of airborne combustion products such as carbon monoxide or smoke particles. The effectiveness and credibility of these systems can be reduced by the occurrence of false alarms that result from the operation of diesel-powered equipment, which produces the same combustion products. False alarms end up being very costly to the mine operation in terms of downtime and labor needed for verification. To improve upon current fire detection systems used in the presence of internal combustion engine products, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a fire detector that can discriminate between the occurrence of real mine fires and the presence of engine smoke.

Equilibrium partial pressures of gaseous HCl and H2O over aqueous binary and ternary solutions of HCl and AICls were calculated or estimated in the range of 20° to 110° C, and up to saturation with AlC13?6H2O. The results were extended to solutions containing less than 10 wt-pct FeCl3 by assuming that FeCl3 and AIC13 are equivalent on the molar basis, since both salts have trivalent cations with a cammon anion. The ionic activity coefficient of HCl and the equilibrium constant for dissolution of gaseous HCl were also computed. This research is part of the effort by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to provide thermodynamic data to expand the technology base relevant to the extraction of alumina from nonbauxitic domestic raw materials.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines collected and analyzed over core measurements and other indicators of in situ stress characteristics at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. An analysis of these data revealed that significant local variations in in situ stress are present in this mine and that these variations existed prior to mining. High stresses were found to be associated with the most competent strata and a locked section of a fault. An estimate of the predominant stress field was developed for mine-wide modeling. The estimate shows that the greatest principal stress was oriented north of northwest. This information should provide a basis for mine-wide structural modeling of the Lucky Friday Mine and should generate important insights into localized stress conditions, which may significantly affect both local and mine-to-mine variations in seismicity induced by excavation.

Improve the safety of mine workers by developing a sensitive ground-fault relay system capable of detecting and isolating low level ground faults and thereby minimize the danger of electrocution. Approach Inadvertent, direct contact with energized conductors in underground coal mines is a major cause of electrocutions. Although relay systems designed to protect workers against such fatal accidents do exist in some industries, there are no effective ground-fault-sensing relay systems that address the special problems presented by power systems designed for U.S. mines. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to design and construct a sensitive ground-fault relay for use with low-voltage, alternating current (ac) mine electrical systems. Such a relay, sensing current leakage or faults in an electrical system, would send a trip signal to a circuit interrupting device which would then shut down power.

"A Product from Mica Mines.Mica commonly occurs in pegmatites which consist of large crystals of feldspar and quartz, mica constituting but a small proportion of the total rockMuch of the feldspar thus thro n out during the process of mining is pure and of high quality, end the Bureau of Mines has suggested that much of it could be utilized for ceramic purposes. Encouragement is given to such utilization by the fact that several mines now worked for mica were formerly operated for the production of feldspar. ""'here mines are not readily accessible to railroads feldspar utilization might not be feasible, for it is a much lower priced product than mica and cannot therefore bear as heavy transportation expense. '""here mines ire located close to railroads, however, such utilization would tend to reduce the cost of mica mining, and at the same time assist in the solution of the waste disposal problem.The Bureau has recently been informed that some of the feldspar from mica mines near Spruce Pine, N.C., is now being sold and shipped away. An extension of this by-product industry is to be recommended.A Mica Deposit in New York City.The Bureau recently received a mica specimen obtained from a. building excavation at 157th St. and Riverside Drive, New York City. The specimen was about 2 by 4 inches in size, and fairly clear though containing numerous hair cracks. It was obtained only 7 or 8 feet below street level. At greater depth and with more careful methods of excavation material of much better quality might be obtained. The material submitted could be used for mica washers but not for sheet mica. It is stated by an official of a prominent mica company that many such fragments are obtainable in this locality and the possibility of the occurrence of a good mica vein is thereby suggested."

Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicate that a total of 241,502 employees worked in surface mining locations in 2003, corresponding to 212,113 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers. • Surface employees accounted for 84.6% of all mining employees. • The majority of surface employees (73.7%; n = 177,927) were mine operator employees as opposed to contractor employees. • Stone operator employees comprised the greatest percentage (27.2%; n = 65,743) of surface employees.

The United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Colorado at the University of Colorado has conducted experiments to determine the amount and composition of the non-condensable gases evolved when crude shale oil is distilled under pressure. Hydrogen sulphide is one of the components found in the complex mixture of Gases produced by the distillation of shale oil under pressure. This paper deals with the apparatus and method used in determining the amount of hydrogen sulphide evolved in the laboratory experimental cracking stills. The study required a complete extraction of all the hydrogen sulphide from the gas stream after it left the water-cooled distillate condensers and before the gas stream entered the charcoal absorber for removing the light naphtha. In devising the method it was necessary to take into account a constant variation of velocity, pressure, and percentage of sulphide in the total gas stream coming from the still. Ordinarily, the quantitative determination of hydrogen sulphide in gas is made by analyzing small samples taken at regular intervals. This estimation can be accomplished by use of the Bunts gas burette as modified by Tutriler, or by a similar method. In the industries where the flow of gas is constant and of uniform composition, this practice is sufficiently accurate for plant control. For experimental work where many variables have to be taken into consideration, as in the case at band; these methods are not applicable.

This paper describing the mining practice at the Spring Hill mine of the Montana Mines Corporation, Helena, Mont., is one of a series issued by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various districts. Its purpose is to summarize improved methods whereby lower costs have recently been obtained. These improvements are principally the adoption of a modified sublevel stoping method of mining the use of grizzlies underground improvements in haulage, and rage bonuses. The Sprint Hill, Trine is situated in Grizzly Gulch, 3 miles southwest of the city of Helena. Helena is on the links of the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern Railways; and the East Helena smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co. to which the concentrates from the mine are shipped, is but 6 miles east of Helena. The mine is probing 150 to 200 tons of gold ore per day, with an underground crew of about 40 men.

During the mineral survey of the Bob Marshall Wilderness and study areas by the author in 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1976 (Marks, 1978), the area designated Reservoir-North (RARE II No. H1-485) in January, 1979, (U.S. Forest Service, 1979) was examined, along with other lands adjacent to the earlier study areas. However, the 1978 open-file report covered only areas originally designated for study. The present report on Reservoir-North is based on earlier work. No work has been done in the area since 1976. Mineral Appraisal Reservoir-North RARE II area (No. H1-485) is in the Northern Disturbed Belt which has been identified as having high potential for natural gas accumulations and lesser potential for oil accumulations (Mudge, 1978). Oil and gas lease applications in the area, indicate interest by oil companies.

Improved practice resulting from recent changes in the method of supplying compressed air and in pneumatic drilling equipment used in secondary drilling and in development work at the Morenci mine of the Phelps Dodge Corp., has resulted in improved safety conditions, as well as in a reduced cost per foot of drilling. A large stationary compressor installed outside the mining area and the compressed-air pipelines in the mine were replaced by portable compressor units. A self-propelled, self-contained drilling unit was obtained for drilling large footages where short moves were involved. Large wagon-drill units were replaced by faster and lighter drill machines and conventional bits by carbide insert bits. The safe practices employed in air drilling and in the related blasting and scaling operations have contributed to an excellent safety record at this mine. The complete sets of instructions listed in the company codes of safe practice aid materially in training employees.

At some coal mines, methane gas is released during raise drilling. At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, the Bureau of Mines conducted ventilation surveys at different raise drill sites to assess various methods of reducing methane concentration. The resulting data indicate that raise drill shaft cavities are ventilated by air compressors, vacuum pumps, auxiliary blower fans, and free intake air from the surface. The compressors, pumps, and fans operate simultaneously or separately. At the bottom of the shaft cavities, ventilation is controlled by regulators and airlocks. Methane is monitored, measured, and periodically sampled on the surface, at the bottom, and at different levels in the shaft cavities. Maximum concentration of 3.5 percent was measured in one shaft in West Virginia. Air velocity down the raise drill shafts is always very low, Maximum recorded air down the drill stem was 3,000 cfm, which can be increased by adding air compressors. The best way to ventilate shaft cavities is through the simultaneous use of air compressors and vacuum pumps. If the methane concentration cannot be reduced with additional compressors, then the inside diameter of the drill rod should be increased, or larger pilot hole drill bits should be used.

The dielectric constant .has been frequently referred to as an important property in electrostatic separation whore the particles are in an air ambient. Hatfield (1) has studied the problem on the basis of fundamental theory, with the conclusion that separations in air dependent on the differences in dielectric constant, in conjunction with a nonhomogeneous field, are not feasible, because of the low dielectric strength of the air. Although Hatfield has made the statement without showing the calculation or data, calculated values substantiating this under certain conditions of the problem will be given in the following text. However, under other Conditions, these conclusions do not hold, and it is probable that the dielectric constant is indirectly influential.

This paper, describing the mining methods and practice at No. 2 mine of the American Zino Co. of Tennessee at Mascot, Tenn., is one of a series of papers issued by the Bureau of Mines presenting the mining methods and costs in various districts throughout the United States. Its purpose is to summarize methods recently put into practice whereby increased efficiency has been effected. These improvements have to do principally with mill-hole mining, slushing, contract labor, and bonuses. In general, this paper supplements earlier articles and brings them up to date. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The author acknowledges the assistance of M. H. Newman, geologist of the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co.; of William Black, assistant superintendent of mines; of P. M. There have appeared, from time to time, comparisons of various features of coal mining practice in the United States and Great Britain. A recent, article, appearing in a British journal, points out that the American miner produces 3 1/2 times as much coal per shift as the miner, at one-half the cost, and proceeds to explain the natural industrial, and engineering causes which lead to this result. Amon« he reasons advanced. is that the American coal miner enjoys the advantage of more easily worked seams of coal, due to the fact that the coal mining industry in the United States is of more recent date than in Great Britain. The latter qualification is not correct, because where these advantages exist, they will persist. The coal beds of the United States are not buried deeply, except in the remote parts of the country, as in the Uinta Basin of Utah. The article referred to states that many of our miners are still employed on out seams reached by "adits", (which we term entries), or by vertical shafts of moderate depth. It is probable in fact that the great bulk of the coal of the United States is taken out from a depth of less than 400 feet.

This report describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation into the removal of gate road chain pillars in conjunction with longwall retreat mining. The research objective was to determine, through evaluations of the loads imposed on the gate road pillars and supplemental support elements in the entries, how the pillars, supplemental support, and entries were affected by the longwall abutment pressure. To achieve this goal, vibrating wire stressmeters and hydraulic flat jack pressure cells were installed in the support elements to monitor stress change caused by abutment pressure as a function of longwall face advance. The findings documented in this report are the result of information collected from instrumentation and observation at the mine. Pillar and support loading measurements and stability observations revealed that the roof and the support elements remained stable during panel retreat, while the face progressed at a normal rate of advance. The ability to safely and efficiently mine chain pillars during panel retreat increases resource recovery and can provide several other benefits described in this report.
