[The Anniversary-Bucky pegmatite is one of the largest, dikes in the Quartz Creek district, 21 miles east of Gunnison, Colo. The major dike consists of quartz-albite pear pagmatite and graphic granite with many quartz masses as individual cores occurring within the dike. A mining operation on one of the largest core areas has exposed several mineralogic cones directly associate with the core. These zones, including the large- units of the dike, are quartz pegmatitc, quartz-perthite pegmatite, perthite pegmatite, muscovite-feldspar -quartz pegmatite, quartz-albite pegmatite, and perthite-quartz (graphic granite) pegmatite. Muscovite and beryl are found in the muscovite-feldspar-quartz zone and are the only two products that have been marketed. Other potential products are perthite, graphic granite, and possibly small quantities of columbite-tantalite, monazite, and related radioactive minerals. The Bureau of Mines drilled two diamond-drill holes during April 1950 to investigate the largest and cost promising core area. This, report describes the results of this drilling.]

The Bureau of Mines has successfully tested a method to simulate methane (CH~) flows from face areas through the returns of noncoal mines. This technique' involves releasing a small quantity of tracer gas at a working area and sampling for that gas downstream in the re- turn airways. By measuring the dilution of the tracer gas, the dilution of any volume of CH4 released at the face can be calculated. This information is useful in selecting locations for CH4 monitors and in deciding the necessity for permissible equipment in the returns.

"SUMMARYThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Projects were set up on only the most promising properties. A preliminary examination of the Rio Grande property was made by Bureau of Mines engineers in July 1942 and the property was examined again in July 1943.The Geophysical Branch of the Bureau undertook a Geophysical survey of the area in November 1943 and was intermittently active in the district until June 1946. The major portion of their work was done from June 191 to November 1945. Favorable areas for exploration were recommended by the Geophysical Branch of the Geological Survey, 3/ and all holes were drilled in them.Two projects were set up by the mining branch in an endeavor to find ore bodies on the strength of the geophysical information."

Many western ores containing ;old, silver, and copper can be mined and concentrated at a profit only when the recovery of those metals is high and treatment costs are low. Usually, ores containing easily dissolved copper minerals, or copper minerals that become soluble to some extent through oxidation during treatment, present a real problem in cyanidation. Copper cyanide compounds are formed that tend to 'precipitate and that cannot yield regenerated cyanide and metallic copper on contact with zinc. This results not only in some loss of copper through solution in cyanide, but in excessive consumption of cyanide above the amount required for the extraction of Gold and silver. Any moans, therefore, of minimizing the: loss of cyanide while at the same time effecting high recoveries of the several values contained in the ore is of wide interest. A sample of typical low-grade ore of gold, silver, and copper, containing copper-sulfide minerals, was obtained from the MacLaren Gold Mines Co., Cooke, Park County, Mont., for laboratory investigation by flotation and cyanidation.

Prompted by forecasts of a sulfur oversupply, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research on potentially large-scale uses of this commodity to extend or replace such construction materials as asphalt, cement, and mineral aggregates. Through these efforts, paving materials have been developed in which sulfur replaces up to 50 pct of the asphalt normally present and which can be prepared and placed with existing mixing and paving equipment. Laboratory properties and design methods for this direct mixing process are described along with properties obtained on small-and large-scale field demonstration projects. These properties are compared with those obtained from control materials prepared without sulfur additions. Monitoring for toxic gases during laboratory and commercial mixing and paving operations is discussed also.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a thin-film X-ray fluorescence technique to rapidly determine Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, and Cr in super alloy leach liquors. Total analysis time per sample was less than 15 min, as opposed to several hours for traditional wet chemical methods. Precision and accuracy were checked by replicate analyses of solutions similar in composition to leach liquors, whose analyte concentrations were well known. Coefficients of variation for all elements were found to be less than 2 pet. With the exception of the results for Fe, all relative errors of estimation were also found to be less than 2 pet. Bulk liquids are not introduced into the spectrometer; thus, the potential for damage to the instrument by leakage of corrosive liquids is eliminated.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a method of standardizing forecasts of mineral consumption that attempts to resolve the problems caused by the use of different data bases, different definitions of minerals consumption, and different base years for making projections. Using this method, forecasts of U.S. and world mineral consumption, in the year 2000, for nine commodities (aluminum, chromium, cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel, tin, tungsten, and zinc) are standardized and compared. Also selected forecasts or associated growth rates are used to generate implied values of consumption for 1980-83, which are then compared to actual values of consumption for 1980-83. The economic growth predictions underlying the forecasts are examined, and some general conclusions are drawn. A description of each methodology used to generate these forecasts is given in an appendix.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a monitoring system that acquires and analyzes data for use in determining the conditions that may precede mountain bumps in coal mines. Based on a UNIX workstation linked to an array of geophones in a working longwall operation, the system captures complete waveforms of microseismic events and simultaneously obtains continuous samples of the voltage levels of each geophone. Event rates and locations are calculated and displayed in real time on the UNIX workstation, which is situated in an underground instrumentation room. These results also are transmitted from the workstation to a display computer near the longwall face. The system runs continuously and has the capability to acquire, analyze, display, and archive microseismic (transient) data and single point data, such as closure and pressure changes, simultaneously.

"INTRODUCTION Ignitions of gas at the coal face when a blast is fired electrically are often a tributed to the explosive; but sometimes the ignition cannot be explained satisfactorily in this way-in fact, ignitions have occurred when the detonator has failed explode.The possibility of such electrically by sparks from the blast between poorly insulated leading wires and detonator leg have been recognized. Several countries have provided safe types of single-shot blasting units; some have permitted the use of larger multiple-shot blasting units provided each unit is equipped with a time-limiting switch that prevents unnecessarily long application of voltage on the leading wires after the shot has occurred, the assumption being that the firing line will this be dead before damage to the wires and subsequent sparking can take place. An extensive research was made by a French commission relative to the characteristics of electric detonators and methods of firing. Along other tailings they investigated the probability of ignitions by sparks across the leading wired at the face, also the time and duration of the various events in blasting, such as ignition of the detonators, movement of the coal face, and application of firing current. They suggested, as a means of eliminating or reducing tilt possibility of gas ignitions from the blasting unit, that the timing switch of the blasting unit be designed to disconnect the blasting"

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1985 was $405.9 million, a slight decrease from the record high of 1984. With the exception of clays, output of most nonfuel minerals increased over that of 1984. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of crushed marble and bauxite; third in firre clay; fourth in masonry cement and kaolin; fifth in portland cement and lime; and sixth in ferroalloys and recovered sulfur, Alabama ranked 20th in the Nation in value of nonfuel minerals produced, but ranked 13th in value of industrial minerals. Valuewise, Alabama produced 2.4% of the Nation's industrial minerals.

The electrodeposition characteristics of seven binary alloys of titanium have been investigated. The object of the electrorefining experiments with an alloy was to determine the efficiency of titanium separation from individual alloying elements under established conditions. Reported results are only indicative. It is conceivable that numerous duplications of tests might give average maximums that would vary from those noted in this report; however, in the few tests that were repeated, the magnitude of transfer of the alloying elements was of the same order. The results detailed herein are for a given set of conditions. Many combinations of operating variables are possible, and the results achieved under different conditions probably would differ from those reported.

Deposits of talc are known in many districts in Canada but at the present time active mining operations are reported only in Ontario . Here three companies are now operating, two of which, George H. Gillespie & Co. , Ltd. , and the Anglo- American Talc Co. , are at Madoc . The operations of the former company are probably the largest and best known in Canada . The writer , in his capacity as an engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , was permitted by this company to make an inspection of its mine and mill in June, 1920 , and study the methods employed . This information was desired for comparison with methods employed in the United States . The following description is based on observation made during this visit , supplemented by data supplied by the company .

In 1988, at the request of the Bureau of land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 13,460-acre Owyhee Breaks Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-059) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is in Malheur County, OR, about 27 miles northwest of Jordan Valley. No mineral resources were identified in the study area during this investigation. There is an occurrence of jasper along Birch Creek and an associated occurrence of zeolite in some tuffs. In the northern part of the study area is an occurrence of bentonitic clay containing less than 40,000 tons. Much of the area is covered by landslide blocks, colluvium, earthflow deposits, and talus, composed of Tertiary-age volcanic rocks. The upper plateaus are capped by Tertiary-age basalt.

It is used in Illinois and Indiana mines to a large extent and also has been introduced in mines in a few other States.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe author gratefully acknowledges the information and photographs furnished by the Cardox Corp.HISTORYIn the early 1920's, with the adoption of mechanical mining in States where on-shift shooting was prohibited, it became desirable to develop some means of breaking coal from the face without the use of explosives. At that time it was thought that a pressure of 20,000 pounds per square inch would be necessary to break the seal. It was impossible to obtain a compressor that would develop this pressure therefore, the 'patentees developed and applied the Cardox method, which utilizes liquid carbon dioxide as the blasting medium."

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). "INTRODUCTION Respirable dust is defined as the dust which penetrates to the alveolated regions of the lungs. Due to the size selective nature of the particle removal mechanisms in the nasal passages and lung airways, criteria defining respirable particles must be a function of the particle size. Three criteria defining respirable particle penetration are shown in Figure 1. These criteria have been defined by the British Medical Research Council (BMRC), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and German TBF 50-11 (1).The quantity of respirable particles in an aerosol can be measured by use of two-stage samplers. The first stage consists of a particle preclassifier with penetration characteristics corresponding to one of the respirable penetration curves in Figure 1. The large nonrespirable dust particles are removed from the airstream in the preclassifier and the smaller respirable dust particles pass on to some device which can measure their concentration (the respirable dust concentration).Instrumentation for the measurement of respirable coal mine dust has been limited by the severe conditions existing within the coal mine. The conditions of particular importance are the methane atmosphere, high humidity, and the general non-laboratory type environment. The most severe of these conditions is the methane atmosphere since any electronic or electric powered instrumentation must be intrinsically safe to operate in such an atmosphere.In spite of the difficulty of sampling respirable dust within the mines, many instruments have been developed for in mine use. Although these instruments operate under a variety of principles they generally fall within two categories: personal samplers and area samplers.A personal sampler is worn by the mines while he is performing his duties in the mine. These devices are generally small, light weight and require little power so as not to interfere with the miner's ability to work."
