Laboratory mineral-dressing investigations were conducted on talc-bearing samples from Arkansas and Texas under the Bureau of Mines program of examinations and surveys, which is concerned, in part, with the improvement of conservation and utilization of domestic mineral resources. Two of the soapstones in question were successfully upgraded by flotation, utilizing stage additions of a frother and an amine to promote their talc content. The process could enable the producers to meet more rigid specifications of higher priced talc commodities. INTRODUCTION Talc is an industrial mineral with distinctive properties, such as softness, smoothness, large surface area in relation to mass, chemical inertness, and good retention as a filler, that make it particularly valuable to a number of industries. Sales to 6 industries -ceramics, paint, insecticide, rubber, roofing, and paper -consumed 84 percent of the domestic production of talc, pyrophyllite, and ground soapstone in 1952. The U.S., Australian, and United Kingdom coal and the Canadian hard rock mining industries have long recognized the significance of high horizontal stresses as a factor affecting the stability of roof and rib conditions in underground mines. Recently, a growing segment of the U.S. underground stone mining industry has also begun to recognize that horizontal stresses occur in some of its more than 90 mines. Considering the typically high strength and massive nature of limestone, this fact is a revelation in itself. High horizontal stresses produce extensive and sudden rock failures and, in some cases, resulted in injuries to mine workers. Through the years diverse control strategies have been proposed and experimented with. Reorientation of mine entries to reduce stress concentrations have proven successful and are widely accepted in practice. Other solutions, like rock reinforcement, are poorly understood and less accepted in practice. It is the purpose of this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) study to develop a better fundamental understanding of these ground control strategies under high horizontal stress conditions through a series of field and laboratory studies. To this end a design technique is presented which provides stone miners with a method for making stability assessments. The consequences of widening rooms, changing geology and horizontal stresses, and different rock bolts on roof beam failures are discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has estimated the potential availability of copper from 204 mines and deposits in market economy countries (MEC's). The evaluated properties have demonstrated resources totaling 436.4 million metric tons of contained copper and account for 90% of the Bureau of Mimes reserve base for copper in market economy countries. Total recoverable MEC copper resources are 340.8 million metric tons, 69% of which is from producing mines and 31% from nonproducing mines and deposits. Chile had the lowest estimated average total cost from producing mines of W.48 per pound of recoverable copper at a 0% discounted cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), with estimated average total costs ranging from $0.40 to $0.81 per pound. The estimated average total cost of production, per pound of copper, for producing mines in the United States amounts to $0.57 in January 1988 dollars at a Wo DCFROR, with estimated total costs ranging from $0.36 to $0.85 per pound. In both real and nominal terms, the United States has, on average, significantly lowered its copper production costs since 1981. Rationalization of the industry and significant increases in productivity have made a strong improvement in the competitiveness of the U.S. copper industry to the extent that the United States should no longer be considered as a marginal producer of copper.

Demand for arsenic trioxide dropped markedly during 1983, primarily as a result of a 27% reduction in cotton planting. As an oversupply of arsenic trioxide developed, prices declined for both domestic and imported material. The Federal Bureau of Mines coal-pyrite flotation process has been modi¬fied to produce a concentrated final clean coal slurry underflow that could be dewatered more effectively by filtration or centrifugation. This change was accomplished by redesigning the Bureau's two-stage flotation pilot plant facility and running the second-stage flotation step with undiluted or only partially diluted first stage coal froth concentrate. Results of the pilot plant flotation tests showed that substantial sulfur reduction could be achieved by flotation with undiluted pulp but some dilution is recommended for maximum selectivity. For example, coal-pyrite flotation in slurry of 25 percent solids yielded clean coal products analyzing as low as 0.7 percent pyritic sulfur and froth reject products containing slightly over 3.0 percent pyritic sulfur. In comparison, coal-pyrite flotation with pulp diluted to about 12.5 percent solids yielded clean coal containing as low as 0.4 percent pyritic sulfur and froth reject of 5.6 to 6.7 percent pyritic sulfur. Despite the need for some dilution, it was concluded that excellent coal-¬pyrite flotation selectivity could be achieved without diluting to 6 or 7 per¬cent solids as done in the earlier work. Thus the economics of coal-pyrite flotation would be improved by easing clean coal dewatering problems and by reducing second-stage flotation cell volume requirements.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines in their continuing research into sealants, selected MBAssociates to design, build, and test equipment and evaluate sealant as to its effectiveness is shale degradation. There were 20,050 sq.ft. of coal mine roof sprayed with a mine sealant and as a result, it has been estimated that the sealant coated roof has from 50% to 95% less roof falls than that roof which was not coated with sealant.

This report by the Federal Bureau of Mines describes the carbonizing properties of coals from the principal beds in Boone County , W. Va . Results are given for samples of coals from No. 5 Block , Stockton - Lewiston , Coalburg , Winifrede , Chilton , Hernshaw , Cedar Grove , Alma , and No. 2 Gas beds . Boone County coals rank as high -volatile A bituminous . Eighteen of the 21 samples tested contained from 3.3 to 7.9 percent ash and 16 of the samples contained from 0.6 to 0.9 percent sulfur . "Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) are major products of the activated alveolar macrophage and serve as key mediators of lung injury. In order to determine if the synthesis ofTXA2 and the release ofTNFa are associated, the production of these inflammatory agents by the human alveolar macrophage (AM), as a result of activation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was assessed in the absence and presence of the thromboxane synthase inhibitors UK 38,485 (Dazmegrel) and OKY 046. UK 38,485 and OKY 046 inhibited both LPS-stimulated TXA2 production and TNFa release in a dose-dependent manner. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production was not increased by UK 38,485 or OKY 046. Neither LPS nor UK 38,485 had any effect on LT84 production by AM. Neither UK 38,485 or OKY 046 had any effect on LPS-stimulated interleukin-I beta release. However, the TXA2 mimetic, U46619, did not stimulate TNFa release by AM either in the absence or presence of UK 38,485. These findings suggest that 1) UK 38,485 and OKY 046 are inhibitors of both TXA2 production and TNFa release by activated human AM, 2) UK 38,485 probably does not exert its inhibitory action on TNFa release through effects on eicosanoid production and 3) the possibility that TNFa- and TXA2-induced lung injury may be subject to amelioration by imidazole-based compounds should be further evaluated.IntroductionTumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa), produced by monocytes and macrophages, is a potent peptide mediator of lung injury (1,2). The exaggerated release of TNFa has been implicated in the etiology of acute lung reactions such as septic shock of bacterial or viral origin (3,4). The role of TNFa is expressed primarily through its ability to activate a variety of cell types within the lung environment including polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs, ref. 5), type II epithelial cells (6) and fibroblasts (7). The role of lipid mediators in lung disease has also been extensively characterized (1). In particular, the relationship between pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis and the production of oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (here termed ""eicosanoids"") appears to be a key factor in a variety of disease processes in the lung (8). The alveolar macrophage (AM) synthesizes primarily prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and leukotriene 84 (LT84, ref. 9). These eicosanoids have been shown to produce a variety of effects in the lung including bronchial smooth muscle dilatation (PGE2, ref. 10), vascular smooth muscle contraction and platelet aggregation (TXA2, ref. 11) and oedema and immune cell extravasation (LT84, ref. 12)."

In broadest overview, a substantial part of the world's mineral industry in 1990 registered small gains over its 1989 performance, but traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely global production, trade, and consumption levels, failed to mirror these gains. This was because of the sharp downturns in the mineral industry activity in the U.S.S.R. and the former centrally planned economy nations of eastern Europe. These downturns in this one geographic area had influences on almost all traditional statistical series, in some cases simply significantly reducing growth, in other cases providing for a global downturn, in almost all cases despite considerably brighter outlooks based on activities in other world areas. To be sure, the U.S.S.R. and eastern Europe were not the only places on the planet suffering problems of one type or another in 1990 that impacted on minerals industry activity, but with the acquisition of information presently available, it seemed almost assured that the difficulties of these economies in transition will be the most difficult of problems to resolve in the long run. It certainly appeared that the legacy of the half century or more of economic central planning will be a decade or more of very difficult adjustments, and a number of these will greatly affect not only the minerals industry of these transition countries, but also the rest of the globe's mineral industry as well.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the substitution of cement copper powder for commercial copper powder in an Fe-7 pct Cu-l pct C powder metallurgy alloy. Copper powders from six different commercial cementation operations were separately upgraded by screening and hydrogen reduction. They were then mixed with commercial iron and graphite powders to form the Fe-7 pct Cu-l pct C alloy. Various chemical and physical properties were determined on the upgraded cement copper and the alloy powders. Mechanical, physical, and chemical properties were determined on green and sintered specimens made from the alloy powders. Mean tensile and bending strength of sintered specimens were significantly lower than the means from specimens made from commercial metal powders. The lower strengths are apparently related to poor sinterability.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are participating jointly in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air-leakage resistance of various proposed seal designs for use in underground coal mines. The full-scale seals were constructed in the USBM's experimental mine at the Lake Lynn Laboratory, air-leakage tested, then subjected to pressure pulses of 20 psig or greater. bjected to pressure pulses of 20 psig or greater. In experiments prior to this study, seven seal designs using solid-concrete blocks were tested. Only the standard-type seal passed the explosion and air-leakage criteria. Tests also were performed on four seals constructed with low-density foam blocks. All four of these seal designs withstood the pressure pulse. In more recent studies, nine cementitious foam seal designs of varying thicknesses and densities were investigated. Six of the nine designs successfully survived the explosion overpressures. Six wood- block convergence seals also have been tested. The typical 3-ft-thick, wood-block seal design currently used in many coal mines did not maintain its integrity, in the absence of convergence forces, following the explosion test. Five modified wood-block seals successfully withstood the 20-psig pressure pulse. Based on these tests, three alternative seal construction materials, cementitious foam, low-density foam block, and wood, have been approved by MSHA for use in underground coal mines.

This investigation was made as part of a larger program to develop basically new methods for preparing yttrium metal in high-purity form. It was performed under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the Federal Bureau of Mines. Laboratory-scale tests were made to devise methods for preparing high-purity, anhydrous yttrium trichloride, for reducing the yttrium trichloride with sodium or lithium, and for consolidating the resulting yttrium sponge into ingots.

The supply of arsenic trioxide in 1982 was adequate to meet domestic demand. Allocation of supply by major domestic and foreign producers that began in 1977 ended during the first quarter of 1982. Major demand was about evenly divided between industrial chemicals and agricultural chemicals.
