In the United States water pollution resulting from mining activities has long been recognized as a major environmental problem Mine drainage pollution results from many types of mining activities and includes both physical (i e , sedimentation) and chemical (i e , acidification, metal contamination, etc ) pollutants Active and abandoned surface and underground mines, mineral processing plants, mine and processing plant waste disposal areas, haulage roads, and tailing ponds are typical sources of mine related water pollution (130) One of the most serious pollution problems arising from mining activities is acid mine drainage resulting from the chemical reaction of sulfide minerals (commonly iron sulfides) and air in the presence of water Acid mine drainage is commonly associated with coal and hard rock mining areas in the United States In general the more serious and extensive acid mine drainage problems exist in the more humid coal regions east of the Mississippi River (11) In 1964 the U S Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, reported that acid mine drainage adversely affected fish and wildlife habitat in 9,477 kilometers (5,890 miles) of streams and 6,062 hectares (14,967 acres) of impoundments in 20 states in the United States (64) Of the total affected waters, coal mining operations accounted for 97 percent of the acid mine drainage pollution reported for streams and 93 percent of that reported for impoundments In 1970 more than 19,308 kilometers (12,000 miles) of streams in the United States were reportedly significantly degraded by mining related pollution (130) Of the total affected kilometers, 16,920 kilometers (10,516 miles) or approximately 88 percent were located in the Appalachian coal region (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, and Alabama) In addition, more than 965 kilometers (600 miles) of streams reportedly were degraded by coal mining in states in the Illinois, Western Interior, and Rocky Mountain coal regions The remaining portion of the stream pollution resulted from the mining of (1) copper (california, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wyoming), (2) lead and zinc (Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee), (3) uranium (Rocky Mountain States), (4) iron (Lake Superior iron region), (5) sand and gravel (all states), (6) phosphate (Florida and other states), (7) gold (Alaska), (8) bauxite and barite (Arkansas), and (9) molybdenum, gold, and other metals (Colorado) Abandoned mines and abandoned mine waste disposal areas contribute a large portion of the total pollution resulting from mining activities Numerous abandoned underground mines are located throughout the United States and many are discharging mine drainage pollutants In 1966 the U S Bureau of Mines estimated that more than 88,000 inactive and abandoned underground mines were in existance (126) A listing of these mines by state is presented in Table 1 0-1 More recent estimates indicate that this list is incomplete In Colorado alone there is

"Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism is still not fully understood. Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has. been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed subjects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting disease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the expression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). This article summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica dusts and how silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on hydrogen bonding and free-radical interactions."

The Bureau of Mines investigated alloys of copper with 2, 3, and 4 vol pct alumina and with 2 vol pct yttria. Alloys were prepared by a coprecipitation process and were fabricated by pressing and sintering of powders, extrusion, and swaging. Tensile properties at room and elevated temperatures, stress-rupture strength, electrical conductivity, and density were measured. The superiority in elevated temperature strength of dispersion-strengthened copper to OFHC copper was confirmed. Increasing the oxide content from 2 to 4 vol pct produced only a small improvement in strength properties and decreased the electrical conductivity. The 3 vol pet alumina alloy had the best overall combination of properties.

As part of the Federal Bureau of Mines titanium resources examination program, samples from seven deposits in the Pacific Northwest were tested for amenability to various beneficiation techniques. The samples obtained by the Bureau's Office of Mineral Resources at Spokane, Washington represent a large potential source of titanium. This report summarizes the results of tests at the Bureau's Metallurgy Research Center, Albany, Oregon. Recoveries from tabling placer samples were about 50 percent at grades of 30 percent titanium dioxide. This paper, describing the mining practice at the Champion mine of the Copper Range Copper Mining Co., is one of a series of papers on mining methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. Mining practice at the Champion mine has undergone considerable change during the last four years. Previous to that time the mine was worked by the horizontal out-and-fill method, the stopes starting near the shafts and advancing away from them (fig. 2). The floor pillars were mined by the inclined cut-and-fill method, working en the retreat or toward the shafts (fig. 1). At present the mine is being developed to .tope entirely on the retreat by a sublevel inclined cut-and-fill method.

"INTRODUCTION The Mesabi iron district of Minnesota has a potential production of over 50 million tons of iron ore annually. The large shipments of ore each year are gradually depleting the reserves, and if the present rate of production is to be maintained there must be a growth in the present available ore supply.Growth is a natural course. The growth of a city may be affected by the addition of city blocks or by the improvement of utilities necessary for its betterment, these may go on in the order named or concurrently. The city-block type of growth of the Mesabi has been tremendous, and the ""betterment"" type has followed in due course. Probably the former has reached its limit, and if so, more time will be allotted to the latter. It is not the intent of this paper to present either a eulogy of the wonderful mining methods or a history of the milling, but it is pertinent to say that if the lean-ore area continues to produce, the continuance will be more the result of further improvement of milling methods now well under way than of extension of boundaries by the city block plan of growth.In an examination of the western end of the Mesabi district one finds sludge basins containing millions of tons of millable ore rejected by washing plants which were built for economy in operating cost and with little thought of conservation, and rich tailings piles of jigging plant rejects. In addition, there is an appreciable tonnage of bawl rake pro-ducts so low-grade that it requires mixing with the best ore of the district to make it merchantable.Any of these three products is a source of additional reserves, but gangue must be removed before the products will comply with blast-furnace stipulations. All investigators are agreed that to effect this separation comminution must be fine enough for liberation, but beyond this point opinions diverge; some would seek new processes, while others adhere to methods and machines developed in other mining districts.In the investigation by the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines working in conjunction with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy,Rolla, Mo., the latter course has been followed. Attention was first given to the sludge basins mentioned. From their contents good grades of concentrates were made and the results published 4 later commercial-scale tests were made in a pilot plant of 10 tables, and the laboratory results were confirmed, The tailings from jigging plants are high in iron, and a study of their possible retreatment showed that if they are recrushed, high recoveries of acceptable grade may be expected. The solubility of 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane (TBE) in water was determined from 1.0° to 97.0° C. The solubility (S) of TBE in grams of solute per 100 grams water was correlated with [S = 1,920.55 [exp (40292L7 11, T2 10 T 737.577 + 9.923962 ] where T is in degrees Kelvin. A thermodynamic analysis conducted on a system consisting of a TBE phase and a water phase in equilibrium with a vapor phase led to the calculation of the activity coefficient, vapor-liquid equilibrium distribution coefficient, relative volatility, and heat of mixing for saturated solutions of TBE in water. Data required for these calculations were the solubility of TBE in water and the vapor pressures of TBE and water as a function of temperature.

The necessity for measuring radiation dose is encountered in studying both the beneficial and damaging effects of ionizing radiation on materials . It is also necessary to know the radiation dose absorbed by the reactants in order to evaluate the efficiency of reactions or processes that are promoted by radiation . Thus , a significant effort was made at the Albany cobalt 60 facility to investigate techniques by which the exposure radiation dose can be determined . Methods including ferrous sulfate , ceric sulfate , and methyl methacrylate chemical dosimeters , ion chamber dosimetry , and an absolute radiation calorimeter were investigated . Isodose curves were constructed for several standard source configurations using the dosimetry techniques which were investigated .

This information circular is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines in which the methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau are discussed. This report describes the three largest company-operated uranium mines of Climax Uranium Co. - the G-1, the Mineral Joe, and the Frank No. 1. Climax Uranium Co., a subsidiary of American Metal Climax, Inc., was [corporated] May 11, 1950, just 2 years after establishment of the domestic uranium program by the Atomic Energy Commission. Twenty-five years earlier Arthur H. Bunker, now chairman of the board, American Metal Climax, Inc., organized and operated the U. S. Vanadium Co. at Rifle, Colo.3/ Soon after Climax Uranium Co. was organized, it entered into a contract with the Federal Government to build a uranium-vanadium processing mill in Grand Junction, Colo. Under the contract Climax leased from the Federal Government certain uranium-bearing lands that had been withdrawn from public entry in 1948. From Minerals, Engineering Co. on June 12, 1950, Climax acquired other uranium-vanadium properties on Calamity, Outlaw, and Monogram Mesas in Colorado and on Polar Mesa and in the Yellow Cat area of Utah. To house the milling equipment, Climax leased the old Grand Junction sugarmill building of the Holly Sugar Co. Milling facilities, based on a then new process developed for treating both uranium and vanadium, were completed, and the plant went into production in 1951.

"INTRODUCTION These inspection standards have been prepared for use as a guide for the Federal inspection of anthracite mines. They are a revision of ""Tentative Inspection Standards for Anthracite Mines,"" published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7231 in January 1943 and used as a guide for Federal inspections. Numerous changes in the original standards have been made, due in part to recognition of shortages of some types of safety equipment due to the war, in part to need of additional standards to cover certain mine conditions and practices, and in part to conditions not foreseen when the original standards were prepared.Throughout these standards reference is made to determining the methane content of the mine air by using a permissible flame safety lamp. The Bureau has approved various electrical devices for the detection of methane, but it is recognized that new devices for determining the percentage of combustible gases as well as the percentage of oxygen, might be perfected for general use in mines, and therefore it may be necessary to revise certain standards to include the use of such equipment if and when the device is accepted as being permissible.About one-fourth of these standards are marked with an asterisk (*) as being of particular importance in preventing accidents in many coal mines; however, failure to carry out the suggestions made in such of the other standards as are applicable may also lead to loss of life.With continuing change in mining methods, some of these standards may become inapplicable, and further revision will be advisable. Therefore, question regarding these standards and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the Bureau, so that changes may be made from time to time. Numerous changes proposed by mine operators and by State mining departments have been incorporated in these standards."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Western Fuels Utah, Inc. entered into an agreement to plan, install, and evaluate a micro-computer based monitoring and control system at Deserado Mine, an underground coal mine. The U.S. Bureau of Hines contracted the Colorado School of Mines (CSN) to independently evaluate the project. CSM evaluated and documented costs, benefits, problems, and management and labor perceptions in this report. Recommendations are provided for mine operators and monitoring system vendors considering future installations.

This report summerizes the various studies made to determine the size and support of roofs in the upper shale formation, White Pine Copper Mine, Michigan. These studies were a cooperative effort of the White Pine Copper Company and the Federal Bureau of Mines. Before this investigation, the upper shale formation had been found to contain about 30 to 40 percent of the total mineralization in the ore zones. Investigators estimated that this shale could be economically mined by room-and-pillar methods, provided that the roof would stand over spans of 25 to 32 feet. The problem remained to determine the number of bolts required to safely support these spans. Unbonded fractures in the roof structure of the deposit complicated the use of laboratory methods for determining bolted roof support. Therefore, a method was devised to determine the in-place support which would consider the unbonded fractures. In this method the roofs of 3 rooms with spans of 20, 28, and 36 feet were intentionally overbolted as the rooms were mined. Following stability tests that sometimes exceeded 6 months, the bolts were selectively removed and roof sag, roof strain, and changes in bolt loads were measured concurrently. The number of bolts required for support of these spans was computed from these data.

This Bureau of Mines report estimates the population of the principal types of machinery in use by the coal mining industry during 1982 in surface and underground mines. Estimates were arrived at using 1976 coal equipment population estimates as baseline data with modifications made for new mine development, expansion, and closure occurring during 1976-82. Estimates were broken down into 3 regions which included all 26 coal-producing States. Modifications made to the baseline data were computed using (1) actual equipment information when available, plus (2) equipment information hypothesized from representative generic mine models, which were predicated on mine size and mine method. Roughly half of the equipment fleet at new or expanding coal operations was known; the remainder was hypothesized. The mine models used to generate equipment information are included in this report, along with the hypothesized equipment use data. The equations and various factors used to determine the equipment adjustments for mine closings, new mine openings, and small coal mine operations are also identified.

The surge in gold and silver prices during the 1970's attracted many new mining operators and has rekindled interest among experienced ones. With its low capital investment requirements and fast payout, leaching has attracted many operators--particularly those with small or low- grade deposits. Although in certain situations leaching offers many advantages over conventional mining methods, many operators are uncertain how these relatively new techniques should be implemented. Consequently the Bureau of Mines has prepared this circular to disseminate information on gold and silver leaching practices, techniques, and problem. Engineering data gathered from 26 operations indicate that most ores are leached in heaps following crushing and distribution on pads. Metal values are recovered from cyanide leach solutions using either zinc precipitation or charcoal adsorption. Potential problems that my hamper on block development of a leaching operation are poor percolation characteristics of the ore, calcium salt buildup, low temperatures, and solution losses.
