The motor gasoline that is bring marketed in the United States this stunner is slightly more volatile than that sold a year ago. During the past eight years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gaoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the sixteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupation-al Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include(1) reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus,(2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers, (3) diminished ability to monitor the work environment (i.e., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers? compensation and hearing aids.

Several studies have suggested that pulmonary toxicity to asbestos and silica may be mediated through oxidant-induced cell injury. We have reported recently that surface radicals associated with freshly fractured silica may be an imponant factor in cell injury and induction of pulmonary disease. Although the generation of oxygenated radicals in dust-cell interactions has been demonstrated, there are no data correlating the toxicity of a dust with the level of oxygen radical generation by the dust during its interaction with phagocytic cells. In the present study, we have investigated the in vitro generation of oxygen free radicals from human neutrophils and rat alveolar macrophages stimulated with freshly fractured silica, aged silica, amosite, crocidolite, chrysotilc, and a nontoxic dust, barite. Electron spin resonance (ESR) with the aid of a spin trap phenyl-N-ten-butyl nitronc (PBN) was used to measure the oxygen radicals generated during phagocytosis of the dusts. The relative toxicity index and ESR peak heights, on an equal surface area basis and normalized to barite as one, showed a direct relationship. The normalized toxicity indices and peak heights were: silica, 3.5 versus 2; chrysotile, 4 versus 2; crocidolite, 11 versus 8; and amosite, 26 versus 13. Addition of hydroxyl radical scavengers such as catalase, dimethyl sulfoxide, 1,3 dimethyl-2-thiourea (DMTU), sodium benzoate, and mannitol prevented the radical generation. Carmustine, a glutathione reductase- glutathione peroxidase inhibitor, caused a 5-fold increase in the radical generation. These results indicate that a nontoxic dust such as barite generates toxic oxygen radicals at a minimal level that can be quenched by the normal cellular defense system. For toxic dusts such as silica, amositc, chrysotile, and crocidolite, the potential for oxygen radical generation is enhanced by their surface propenies, physical dimensions, and the surface-based radical-generating redox sites. The enhanced radical generation may impair the cellular defense system, resulting in cell injury. Use of scavengers, chelators, and potentiating agents suggests the membrane-based oxidase system as the probable primary source of the radical-generating system. The data presented herein suggest the generation of oxygen free radicals as an important primary event in silica- as well as asbestos-induced cell injury.

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies on four makes of Japanese automobiles, three 1981 and one 1982 model years, received from three manufacturers to determine if their materials composition would present problems to the current technology used to process junk automobiles for metal recovery. One of each make of automobile was hand-dismantled to determine the materials composition. In addition, two nearly identical automobiles of each make were shredded at a commercial operation where all metal products and rejects were collected for analysis to determine metal and nonmetal distribution. The average weight of the four automobiles to be dismantled, less batteries, tools, and fluids, was 1,938.3 lb. The weight was distributed as 1,472.9 lb. ferrous and 115.6 lb nonferrous metals, 275.2 lb combustibles, 72.3 lb noncombustibles, and 2.3 lb electrical components. The dismantled automobiles, less gas tanks, fluids, tools, wheels, tires, and batteries, which were all removed from the automobiles that were shredded, contained an average of 1,389.1 lb ferrous and 101.6 lb nonferrous metals, 305.7 lb nonmetals, and 2.3 lb electrical components. In comparison, materials collected from the shredded automobiles averaged 1,304 lb ferrous metals, 80 lb nonferrous metals, and 341 lb landfill materials. There were no materials used in the manufacture of the late model Japanese automobiles that should present handling or processing problems to the steelmaking or secondary metal recyclers.

Researchers at the U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted investigations to evaluate the potential for ground water contamination by mine waste used as backfill. Samples of cemented waste backfill and water discharging from drillholes and seeps were collected to use in chemical analyses and laboratory tests to determine the physical and chemical factors that control release of heavy metals to ground water. Greater water retention by cemented backfill (as compared to uncemented sandfill) reduces the surface area exposed to oxidation, which in turn reduces the amount of acid produced. The acid is neutralized by the cement and minerals contained in the backfill. The grain-size distribution of tailings used for backfill affects the structural integrity of cemented backfill under attack by acidic water; breakdown of the backfill structure releases neutralizing materials faster. Backfilled stopes in rock with low hydraulic conductivities will constitute preferential flow paths after mine flooding; however, the rate of flow through backfill will be much slower than when the stope is partially saturated during mine operation. Considering all factors, acid generation and release of metal ions from cemented backfill should be less than in uncemented sandfill.

Lower Sunnyside seam coal from Utah was blended with various proportions of char and high-temperature coke to improve the quality of the coke obtained from carbonizing this coal. The Hanson 5-pound carbonizer was used as a "screening test" for the larger scale Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) tests, which were correlated with industrial production. Eighteen carbonization tests were made in the BM-AGA 13-inch retort, with a coal charge of about 90 pounds; the cokes were evaluated by the standard ASTM tumbler test. Carbonization of blends containing char and coke breeze yielded less fissured and blockier cokes of significantly higher ASTM I-inch tumbler indices as compared with the value for the straight Sunnyside coal. It was found that the simultaneous addition of char and coke breeze yielded stronger cokes than that obtained by the addition of either one of these additives. Addition of a small proportion of Pocahontas No. 3 or Sewell coal to an optimum blend improved the resulting coke strength further.

The Bureau of Mines demonstrated the feasibility of fractionating lanthanide nitrates with a tertiary amine on lanthanum-cerium and thulium-ytterbium pairs. Optimum values were determined for pH, phase concentration, and percent chelation of metal ions in the aqueous phase. Percent extraction is markedly dependent on the concentration of lithium nitrate in the aqueous phase. Selective masking of the heavier element in each extraction system with DTPA or EDTA aqueous-phase chelating agents resulted in lanthanum-cerium separation factors of 8.5 and thulium-ytterbium separation factors of 3.4.

Most Japanese copper smelters are located in areas of concentrated industrial activity and high levels of atmospheric pollution. A review of unofficial sulfur dioxide emission control data from major Japanese smelters shows capture of 91 to 99.7 percent of the sulfur in the smelter feed. The bulk of Japanese smel ting capacity was constructed in the last 10 years. Six of the major sme lters use flash furnaces, and two use reverberatory furnaces. A prototype three-furnace continuous system is in use as a parallel train with reverberatory furnaces at one smelter. Most of the sulfur dioxide is manufactured into sulfuric acid. The remainder is captured by gas scrubbers that yield gypsum and sodium salts. Ready markets exist in Japan for the acid and other su lfur byproduc ts.

Twenty-eight samples, representing the Pittsburgh, Lower Kittanning, Stockton-Lewiston, Coalburg, Winifrede, Cedar Grove, Peerless, No. 2 Gas, Powellton, and Eagle beds, were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines--American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Expanding characteristics of 22 of the samples were determined in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. The Kanawha County coals tested were high-volatile A bituminous in rank, with dry, mineral-matter- free fixed- carbon contents ranging from 53.9 to 66.3 percent. With few exceptions, they were chemically satisfactory for metallurgical use, and most of the coke-strength indexes were within the industrially accepted range for high-volatile blending coals.

The Bureau of Mines is developing a leach-electrolysis procedure to produce Special High Grade (SHG) zinc from sulfide concentrate without the generation of sulfur oxide gases. Chlorine-oxygen leaching of the concentrate yields zinc chloride (ZnCI2) which, after purification, is electrolyzed in a fused-salt cell to obtain molten zinc metal and chlorine gas for recycle. This paper describes a laboratory-scale investigation made to develop a procedure for electrowinning zinc metal from ZnC12. Zinc chloride by itself is not a suitable electrolyte because it fumes badly above its melting point and is a poor conductor of electricity. Other salts therefore must be added to prevent fuming and improve the conductivity. Optimum results were obtained with a KC1-LiCl-ZnCl2 bath at 500° C, using a current density of 5 amp/in2 and an electrode spacing of 0.5 inch. Under these conditions, SHG zinc was produced at a current efficiency of 94.3 pct and an energy requirement of 1.16 kwhr/lb. Fused-salt electrowinning eliminates the need to handle and melt cathodes and increases the production of metal per unit cell volume through the use of higher current densities than are possible with aqueous electrolysis.

"INTRODUCTION The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines has used the wagon drill to sample mineral deposits in New Mexico. This method of sampling was successful and con¬stituted an important phase of the work on five exploratory projects undertaken in 1943, 1944, and 1945. The deposits varied in topographic features, geology, mineral content, and in the physical characteristics of the rocks drilled. The altitudes ranged from 630 to 7,800 feet. Three hundred and seventeen holes totaling 6,852 feet were drilled. The deepest hole was 66 feet; the average depth was a little less than 22 feet.The results of the above-mentioned work form the basis of this report. Special attention is given to the later and more improved techniques used. This report was written with the expectation that the procedures might prove advantageous to others in the exploration and sampling of near-surface mineral de¬posits, and that a more extended use of the technique might result.AcknowledgmentsAcknowledgment is due Charles H. "The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. The objective was to develop a Program Plan of analytical studies and tests for determining (1) the optimum installation tension of a coal mine roof bolt, (2) the most valid bolt support theory or theories, and (3) the most valid roof failure theory or theories. On this basis a comprehensive literature search was made and significant material dealing with coal mine roof behavior, roof bolting and roof support was collected, reviewed, classified and analyzed. Emphasis was given to the influence of rock reinforcement on the control of deformation, stress field modification and mine roof stability. An assessment was made of the effect of various parameters including bolt tension, bolt pattern and time of installation, on the effectiveness of rock reinforcement systems, and equations developed for bolt tension as a function of these parameters, and rock properties. From these studies, a major program plan of tests and studies was developed for verifying and validating the most tenable theories of roof behavior and roof support and for determining optimum bolt installation tension.

The suitability of fluid petroleum coke as a blending agent for producing metallurgical coke has been investigated using the Tuscaloosa and sole-heated experimental ovens. From the results of tests with three representative blends, it has been fond that additions of fluid petroleum coke effect the following changes: (1) Increase in size, resistance to shatter, and apparent specific gravity of cokes produced; (2) little or no change in coke hardness and stability or in the amount of breeze formed; (3) increased charge density; (4) modification of expansion characteristics of blends charged; and (5) decreased ash and increased sulfur contents of blends charged and cokes produced. Substitution of a calcined sample of fluid coke of greatly reduced sulfur content resulted in a coke of inferior physical properties. This effect indicates that additions of the calcined product should probably be limited and that other methods for producing a low sulfur fluid coke should be considered.

This is the first in a series of progress reports on the longwall subsidence research program at the Bureau of Mines Denver Research Center. As part of this program, the Bureau and the Utah Power and Light Co. are cooperating on a study conducted at the Deer Creek Mine, which is directed toward developing the capability to estimate the surface subsidence resulting from longwall mining in a geologic, topographic, and mining environment common to coalfields in the Western United States. A monitoring network has been established at the Deer Creek Mine to measure subsidence over four adjacent longwall panels. To date, two panels have been mined. Subsidence began as the first panel was mined and continued for 1 year following completion of the panel, during which time the adjacent panel was mined" A maximum of 2.7 feet of subsidence occurred over the two longwall panels mined at a depth of 1,500 feet. Because of the length of time that subsidence continued after mining, the final subsidence profiles and angle of draw have not yet been determined.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Many of the mines were developed.A preliminary examination of the Sultan mine was made in January 1945 by the author, who recommended investigation by drifting and crosscutting. The Bureau conducted a project at the mine from April to June 1946. Claims investigated are in sec. 20, T. 25 S., R. 58E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, in southern Clark County, Nev., about 7 miles southwest of Good-springs.The Sultan mine has been an intermittent producer of zinc-lead-silver ore since 1910. During World War II, ore was shipped to the Government stock pile at Jean, Nev., and to the International Smelting& Refining Co.'s smelter near Salt Lake City, Utah. Throughout the past year, ore has been milled and the concentrates have been shipped to the smelter."

"INTRODUCTION Lookout Mountain is the natural barmier that isolates Dade County from the rest of Georgia. Legend has it that Dade County seceded from the Union long before the rest of the State of Georgia and did not officially return until July 4, 1945.Coal mining began in the Lookout Mountain area in 1891, and by 1894 production amounted to about 1,000 tons daily. Present production by the two principal operating companies is about 3,600 tons monthly.In the Sand Mountain area, coal has been mined intermittently since before the Civil War, and probably 6,500,000 tons has been produced.The Bureau of Mines coal project was initiated to alleviate a possible coal shortage and to assist the State in developing coal deposits to supply State institutions and local markets. Drilling began January 1, 1945, and ended May 11, 1945, after 2,907 feet had been drilled. By this time the Georgia Power Co. became interested in northwest Georgia coal fields as a possible source of more economic fuel for their steam-driven power plants, but the Bureau continued to act in an advisory capacity to the power company until June 30, 1945."

A GaC12--B2 l-eachtng procedure and meEal-recovery method for treating an arsenical Cu-Co sulfide concentrate was developed by the Bureau of Mines as an alternative to smelting, which is no longer considered an environmentally acceptable method for treating arsenic-containing ores. The procedure involved leaching in a CaC12 solution with CaC03 for 96 h at 26 pct solids (concentrate and CaC03), 1150 C, and a pressure of 50 psig (345 kPa) with oxygen. More than 98 pct of the cobalt and 97 pct of the copper were extracted, and 99.98 pct of the arsenic and 99.9 pct of the iron remained in the leached residue. A filtration rate of 2.9 gal/(ft2.h) [118 L/(m2.h)] and a cake formation rate of 36 Ib/(ft2.h) [172 kg/(m2.h)] were obtained by filtering reacted pulp at 1000 C. More than 99 pct of the copper in the pregnant solution was extracted as CuCl2 by golvent extraction with a new copper extractant. Copper was stripped from the loaded organic with a sulfate-chloride solution, which was used as the anolyte for electrowinning of copper in a membrane cell. Copper plate produced was more than 99.99 pct pure and requi.red 0.81 (kW'h)/lb Cu [1.78 (kW·h)/kg Cu]. Cobalt sulfide was precipitated at pH 3 with Ca(HS)2.

"Abstract — Concentrations of tailpipe pollutants from diesel-powered. underground mine vehicles change over time due to engine wear and the need for maintenance. Since this deterioration in pollutant emissions may adversely affect the air quality in an underground mine, it should be monitored and controlled. This paper presents decision criteria concerning when to service a mine vehicle diesel engine. These criteria, based on mine air and tailpipe concentration measurements, are designed to maintain the tailpipe concentrations within limits that assure satisfactory mine air quality.Application of the deterioration criteria to mine vehicle emissions involves:establishing, for each pollutant, the allowable deterioration factor, anddetermining the deterioration factor, from the mine air and tailpipe diesel pollutant measurements, and the mine air threshold limit values (TLVs).If the deterioration factor is greater than or equal to the allowable deterioration factor the vehicle is removed from service for maintenance.An analysis applying the criteria to measurements made in an underground coal mine is presented. The tailpipe pollutant concentration data were collected using the Emissions Mea-surement Apparatus (EMA) developed by Michigan Techno-logical University. Since the TLV for diesel particulate matter (DPM) has not yet been established assumed mine air DPMTLVs of 15 and 1.0 mg/m3 were used in the analysis. For all of the diesel haulage vehicles included in the analysis. DPM was found to be the critical pollutant (the one most in need of control). For an assumed mine air DPM TLV of 15 mg/m3 none of the diesel haulage vehicles would he removed from service. However reducing the DPM TLV to 1.0 mg/m3 would make it necessary to remove two of the three vehicles tested from service."
