Between 1988 and 1990, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of San Juan National Forest to appraise and determine types and locations of deposits that could be mined economically now and in the foreseeable future. The study included a comprehensive field examination and literature search. Substantial amounts of lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver have been mined from within the Forest in the La Plata, Rico, Silverton, and Dunton areas. At least one buried 200 million ton stockwork molybdenum deposit occurs in the Rico area. Similar size porphyry copper deposits occur at the surface and about 1,700 feet below the surface in the Bedrock Creek area of the La Plata district. Numerous smaller base-and precious-metal and uranium deposits have been prospected and mined throughout the Forest. Coal, oil, and gas have been or are currently being produced in the western and southern parts of the Forest. Carbon dioxide occurs in the western part of the Forest. Strategic elements occurring within the Forest include platinum, palladium, cadmium, gallium, indium, bismuth, and tellurium; however none of these elements is economically recoverable at present. Several geothermal areas are scattered across the eastern two-thirds of the Forest. Industrial minerals within the Forest include sand and gravel, limestone, and decorative stone.

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. In this report, the Federal Bureau of Mines presents a summary of the occurrence, properties, and uses of some natural bitumens, using the layman's or dictionary definition of bitumens - that is, naturally occurring hydro-carbons. Emphasis is on the less common solid and semisolid bitumens, particularly those occurring or used to some extent in the United States. This comprises data from many sources and references to these sources for more detail than is given in this summary. This paper was prepared primarily to answer questions about some of the less known bituminous materials. The word hydrocarbons could just as well have been substituted in the title for bitumens, but bitumens was used, since an abstract of the paper was presented at a meeting where the major emphasis was on bituminous materials. The reader will realize that coals, of which only the more unusual such as the cannel coals and torbanites are discussed in this paper, are primarily mixtures of bituminous materials and carbon. The amount of bituminous material, or volatile matter, in coals is greatest in the lower rank coals and the unusual types described in this paper, and decreases as coal rank increases. However, since no method other than destruction of the original coal substance by heat is known that will separate the volatile matter from the carbon, it appears reasonable to classify the coals with other bituminous materials, particularly since bituminous coal - the most widely used coal - by its name indicates the combination of bituminous materials and carbon.

"I. INTRODUCTION(SILICA, THE LUNG, INFLAMMATION, AND FIBROSIS)Inhalation of respirable-size silica (0. I to 5 µm in diameter) deposits the particles in the deep spaces of the Jung where oxygen is exchanged. The resulting pattern of inflammation is substantially different compared to that observed from other inhaled substances such as carbon, polystyrene titanium dioxide etc. 1 Following the inflammatory reaction the body attempts to isolate the damage by walling off the area via fibrosis. 2 The unique nature of the inflammatory response to silica makes it logical to infer that fibrosis is a later-stage manifestation of the initial inflammatory damage. In addition to the inflammation extensive lysis and cellular death particularly to macrophages and neutrophils, can occur, depending on the dose of silica.' The ingestion of significant amounts of silica by macrophages and neutrophils produces an inflammatory sequence which activates the lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism and produces platelet activating factor (PAF) and leukotrienes (LT).4·5II. CALCIUM IONOPHORE MIMICS SILICA TOXICITY IN VITROPhagocytic cells exposed to silica in vitro produce PAF and LT. This response is reminiscent of phagocytic cells exposed to the calcium ionophore (A23 l 87) in the presence of ionic calcium.6-8 A23 l 87 forms a complex with free ionic calcium which passes through cellular membranes, thus transporting calcium inside the cell. The increased intracellular calcium concentration triggers the production of small amounts of prostaglandins large amounts of LT. PAF and. depending on dose cellular death (see Figure 1 ). Could silica cause LT production and cellular death by a similar mechanism? How could silica - an inert solid - act in a similar fashion as a soluble stimulant? Clearly the negative SiO2 and OH- surface of silica can bind calcium ions9 and therefore could theoretically act as a solid-state ionophore releasing bound calcium inside of cells following phagocytosis."

The production for this and each succeeding year is shown in the following table:The serious curtailment in production for the years 1912 and 1913 was occasioned by transportation difficulties. In 1914 a railway was projected to Victoria and thereafter production increased greatly. This is the first in a series of progress reports on the longwall subsidence research program at the Bureau of Mines Denver Research Center. As part of this program, the Bureau and the Utah Power and Light Co. are cooperating on a study conducted at the Deer Creek Mine, which is directed toward developing the capability to estimate the surface subsidence resulting from longwall mining in a geologic, topographic, and mining environment common to coalfields in the Western United States. A monitoring network has been established at the Deer Creek Mine to measure subsidence over four adjacent longwall panels. To date, two panels have been mined. Subsidence began as the first panel was mined and continued for 1 year following completion of the panel, during which time the adjacent panel was mined" A maximum of 2.7 feet of subsidence occurred over the two longwall panels mined at a depth of 1,500 feet. Because of the length of time that subsidence continued after mining, the final subsidence profiles and angle of draw have not yet been determined.

An evaluation is made of a lime-soda sinter process for extracting alumina from clay. In this process, alumina is extracted by sintering clay with soda ash and limestone and then leaching the sinter with a dilute sodium carbonate solution. The sodium aluminate solution formed during leaching is separated from the residue and treated with lime in autoclaves to remove dissolved silica before alumina trihydrate is precipitated with carbon dioxide. The tri-hydrate is then calcined to a-alumina. Two options, dry grinding and wet grinding, are used in the sintering step. The fixed capital costs for plants producing 1,000 tons of alumina per day are $72 million for the dry grinding option and $66 million for the wet grinding option on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0. Specific geographic locations of plant and raw material sources are not assigned, but, since this process requires large quantities of both lime-stone and clay, the plant site is considered as variable with relation to the clay mine and limestone quarry. A nomograph is given to find operating costs at various delivered costs of clay and limestone. If the plant is located nearer the limestone quarry so that the delivered cost of clay is $2 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $1 per ton, the operating costs are $76.47 and $71.61 per ton of alumina for the dry grinding and wet grinding options, respectively. On the other hand, if the plant is located nearer the clay mine so that the delivered cost of clay is $1 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $2 per ton, the operating costs are $80.15 for dry grinding and $75.34 for wet grinding.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of various bisbenzylisoquinoline (BBIQ) alkaloids on respiratory burst activity of alveolar macrophages and to characterize the interaction of these drugs with alveolar phagocytes. BBIQ alkaloids were chosen for study because they exhibit a wide range of antifibrotic potencies in a rat model, with tetrandrine being very effective and tubocurarine being ineffective. These drugs inhibited zymosan-stimulated oxygen consumption with a potency sequence of tetrandrine (IT) = fangchinoline (FA) > berbamine (BE) ., cepharanthine (CE) "" cycleanine (CY} ~ tubocurarine (TU). This inhibition of respiratory burst activity could not be attributed to a drug-induced decline in the ATP content of these pneumocytes. Drug binding to alveolar macrophages was directly dependent on temperature and drug concentration. The sequence for binding capacity was FA > TT = BE = CY > CE ~ TU. Therefore, there was no simple relationship between binding capacity and inhibitory potency. Binding capacity was not related to lipophilicity of these alkaloids. In addition, tetrandrine failed to bind to metabolically dead cells or sonicated macrophage preparations. These data suggest that the interaction of BBIQ alkaloids with phagocytes is not simply nonspecific binding to membrane lipids. Alteration of the cytoskeletal system with vinblastine, taxol, or cytochalasin B decreased tetrandrine binding by approximately 33% when adtkd separately and by 93% when added jointly. Pre-exposure of alveolar macrophages to stimulants increased the ability of BBIQ alkaloids to inhibit both oxygen consumption and superoxide release. These data suggest that the mechanism by which BBIQ alkaloids inhibit activation of phagocytes involves microtubules and bules and microfilaments. Pre-exposure of macrophages to stimulants would change the conformation of cytoskeletal components and may make these structures more susceptible to drug interaction.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted field studies in coal mines through- out the United States to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating miners trapped underground following a mine accident. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above mines throughout the coalfields. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results show that at a 10-pct false alarm rate, the expected probability of detecting a miner's signal from a depth of 1,000 ft is 54 pct; at 500 ft it is 95 pct. These depths exceed the actual depths of 90 pct and 50 pct, respectively, of U.S. coal mines. Sensitivity studies have shown that at a depth of 1,000 ft, for every 3 db of improvement in signal-to-noise ratio, the probability of detection increases 6 to 8 pct.

In 1986 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 2 acre North Sisters Rocks Wilderness Study Area (OR-12-8) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is located in Curry County, Oregon, about 15 miles north from Gold Beach. No mines, prospects, or mining claims were located inside the study area, and no mineral resources were identified. Stone from the study area could be quarried and used for construction purposes; however, two nearby quarries have sufficient stone to satisfy local construction needs. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and mineral resource potential of the North Sisters Rocks WSA (Wilderness Study Area) 1/ at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the North Sisters Rocks WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

A GaC12--B2 l-eachtng procedure and meEal-recovery method for treating an arsenical Cu-Co sulfide concentrate was developed by the Bureau of Mines as an alternative to smelting, which is no longer considered an environmentally acceptable method for treating arsenic-containing ores. The procedure involved leaching in a CaC12 solution with CaC03 for 96 h at 26 pct solids (concentrate and CaC03), 1150 C, and a pressure of 50 psig (345 kPa) with oxygen. More than 98 pct of the cobalt and 97 pct of the copper were extracted, and 99.98 pct of the arsenic and 99.9 pct of the iron remained in the leached residue. A filtration rate of 2.9 gal/(ft2.h) [118 L/(m2.h)] and a cake formation rate of 36 Ib/(ft2.h) [172 kg/(m2.h)] were obtained by filtering reacted pulp at 1000 C. More than 99 pct of the copper in the pregnant solution was extracted as CuCl2 by golvent extraction with a new copper extractant. Copper was stripped from the loaded organic with a sulfate-chloride solution, which was used as the anolyte for electrowinning of copper in a membrane cell. Copper plate produced was more than 99.99 pct pure and requi.red 0.81 (kW'h)/lb Cu [1.78 (kW·h)/kg Cu]. Cobalt sulfide was precipitated at pH 3 with Ca(HS)2.

In 1984, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,050-acre Cow Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in order to evaluate its mineral resources. The WSA, located about 60 miles southeast of Havre, MT, contains sandstones, shales, clays, and coal of Cretaceous age. The Cretaceous rocks have been intruded by ultramafic diatremes. Quaternary glacial, stream, and landslide deposits overlie the older rocks. Claims are staked at five of seven sites favorable for diamonds within the WSA and at additional sites nearby. Although the ultramafic diatremes within and near the WSA contain minerals that are indicators for diamonds, no positive evidence of diamonds was found during this study. An abandoned coal mine, the Shellenberger, is inside the southwest boundary of the WSA. Possible petroleum and natural gas at depth are currently of interest; land within the WSA is leased or under lease application for oil and gas. The WSA contains subeconomic clays, zeolites, gold, silver, platinum group metals, and coal.

Heat content and entropy data at high temperatures were obtained for cuprous oxide (Cu2O) and cupric oxide (CuO). Experimental results and smooth values are reported. Equations are given for heat content increments and heat capacities above 2980 K. Low-temperature heat capacity data were obtained for cuprous oxide. Evaluation of the 2980 K entropy gave, S°298.15(Cu2O) = 22.08 ± 0.10 cal/deg mole. Heat of formation values were determined for cuprous and cupric oxides. The values are: AH°298.15(Cu2O) = -40,830 ± 300 cal/mole, and AH°298.15(CuO) = -37,230 ± 150 cal/mole.

During the past 15 years the Bureau of Mines has made and published several hundred analyses of typical petroleums and has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crude oils. In describing crude petroleum frequent reference is made to the "base" of the oil, a usage the petroleum industry has found convenient. As part of its general study of the characteristics of crude oils, therefore, the Bureau of Mines has developed a system of classifying them according to "base." This system as first published in 19274 was limited to four classes and in its original form is no longer considered adequate. Since the system was first published the Bureau has analyzed a large number of crude oil-, including representative samples from nearly every important producing field in the world, and has found that the system of classification could be revised and amplified to advantage. The revised system is presented herein. Bulletin 2916 states that many oil producers and refiners use the word "base" much as it is used in pharmaceutical work. For example, the "base" or "basis" of an ointment or salve is the fatty material (lard, petroleum, or lanolin) used as a vehicle or carrier for the active medicinal principles. Apparently many of the pioneers in the petroleum industry considered crude oil similar in nature to these medicinal products in that it consists of a semisolid, nonvolatile base and 1 volatile portion can be distilled off to make gasoline, kerosene, and other products. Many crude oils when chilled slowly deposit a waxy material (paraffin); this fact may have been one reason for the use of the term "paraffin base" in referring to such oils. Almost all of the petroleum first discovered in the United States was of this nature; not until the oil industry was extended to California and along the Gulf coast was petroleum found that contained no wax but apparently did contain asphaltic material Accordingly, these oils were known as "asphalt-base" oils. The use of this term, however, seems unfortunate, as better-grade oils of this type contain little if any asphalt; the descriptive term "naphthene base" now seems to be a more desirable term than "asphalt base." The term "intermediate base" is also used commonly in referring to oils intermediate in oharacteristios between those of paraffin and naphthene base.

The Bureau of Mines, Foster-Miller Inc., and Beaver Creek Coal Co. have evaluated the ability of a new system to ventilate a 40-ft-deep cut. A remote-control continuous-mining machine, in a 7-ft-thick seam, with exhausting brattice was fitted with an improved sprayfan system plus additional forward and reverse pointing sprays. Static and dynamic tests using tracer gas were conducted in a full-scale model and under-ground to measure the effectiveness of exhaust face ventilation for various deep-cutting mine and spray configurations. When compared to a lO-ft primary ventilation brattice, the extended-cut spray system consistently provided better face ventilation at all configurations up to and including a 40-ft brattice setback. The system also provided good dust protection and visibility for the machine operator. Another safety advantage is the elimination of the need to set temporary roof supports to maintain the ventilation brattice.

As part of an investigation aimed at improving the health and safety and competitiveness of the mining industry, the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the application of common offset radar profiling, using a 250-MHz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system, for the detection of fractures in igneous rock. A series of radar reflection surveys were conducted to detect and delineate the extent of fracturing at various granodiorite and gabbro quarries and outcrops located in Minnesota. The application of radar profiling for detecting joints, sheeting fractures, shear zones, and depth to water table was demonstrated to be feasible with minimal processing. Radar reflection interpretations were verified by visual inspection of the rock mass and field mapping of local structure. The radar reflection section provides a simple, rapid, and cost-effective means for mapping of shallow (less than 10 m) small-scale fractures (greater than 0.25 cm) in igneous rock masses (characteristic of velocities between 0.061 m/ns for gabbro and 0.125 m/ns for granodiorite). Depth or distance estimates to fractures are within 10 pct of the actual, and time-shift compensation is necessary only when topographic irregularities exceed 30 cm.

The removal of silica from commercial iron oxide concentrates by dissolution with sodium hydroxide was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a means for producing supergrade concentrates. The effects of strength of solution, temperature, and digestion time on the extraction of silica were evaluated using eight iron oxide concentrates. Silica extraction from the eight concentrates was enhanced by autoclave leaching in the temperature range of 150° to 250° C and varied from 70 to 95 pct depending on the concentrate used. Superconcentrates containing less than 2 pct Si02 and more than 69 pct Fe were made only when magnetite concentrates were leached in the autoclave. The investigation showed that it is not difficult to obtain a supergrade product if the gangue is mainly quartz.

An equation is derived for the rate of reaction of a sphere of metal oxide in a restricted enclosure through which a reducing gas is flowing . The equation takes into consideration the reaction rate coefficient , transport through the gas and through the porous shell of reduced oxide , the rate of gas flow , and the volume of the enclosure . The equation serves as a model for predicting the course of reduction of a particle of metal oxide in a shaft furnace .

"SUMMARYThe Ione-Carbondale clays area is 2 miles northwesterly of Ione, Amador County, Calif. It was explored during the war by the Bureau of Mines to obtain data on the alumina content and to recover representative samples for beneficiation tests for alumina recovery.Seventy holes, aggregating 8,837 feet, were drilled, and about 10.3 acres of land was cleared of underbrush. Maps and cross sections were compiled showing location of holes, analyses, and other pertinent data.The clay beds vary in thickness from 13 to 196 feet, and are covered by a loose overburden, averaging about 11.9 feet in thickness. The ratio of overburden to clay is 1 : 8.2. Analysis of a composite sample showed the recoverable alumina (A12O3) and Fe2O3 content to be in the order of 23.6 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively.Topography of the clay area is ideal for open-pit mining methods and plant site.INTRODUCTIONInvestigation of alumina-rich clays for the possible production of aluminum was made during the recent war period, when the shortage of bauxite was becoming critical.Results of field examinations by the Bureau of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey indicated that one of the most promising areas for the development of alumina-rich clays is in the Ione-Carbondale district."
