In 1987, the Bureau of Mines initiated a mineral assessment of the 5.7 million-acre Valdez Creek Mining District (VCMD). Following a literature search and interviews with persons knowledgeable about deposits within the district, limited on-site field visits were made to various deposits. Present within the district are the industrial minerals limestone, argillite, granite, basalt, perlite, zeolite, and sand and gravel. At least six limestone deposits of potentially economic size and grade are known to exist within the district. Adjacent to the Parks Highway and marginal to the district, a limestone deposit is currently being mined as a source of agricultural lime. A perlite occurrence near Yacko Creek was evaluated but proved not to be of industrial grade. The sand-and-gravel resources of the district are vast, but high silt content renders many of the glacial deposits unsuitable for use in construction applications.

The Bureau of Mines developed a mathematical model for analysis of the impact of scrubber bed length, porosity, and gas flow rate on the absorption of C02 in a breathing apparatus. The model accounts for the decrease in available absorbent through chemical conversion. The pre-dicted efflux of C02 from a canister containing LiOR compared favorably with measured values reported elsewhere. It was determined from a com-putational study that the time for breakthrough of C02 at a prescribed level is nearly directly proportional to bed length and inversely pro-portional to gas flow and porosity.

"The basic population balance models for agglomeration processes are reviewed and procedures are described for extending their applicability to systems with size-dependent rate constants and to the formation and growth of porous agglomerates from rigid, solid particles. Simplified procedures for the further extension of the models to include simultaneous agglomerate growth and breakage arc also described. IntroductionThe association of small particles into clusters or agglomerates is a significant factor in many facets of particle processing. Agglomeration processes are widely used to facilitate handling, storage and utilization of fine powders. Processes such as coagulation or flocculation are used to aid solid-fluid separation in dispersed particulate systems. Agglomeration also occurs as an accompaniment, often unwanted, to other particulate processing operations such as fine grinding, mixing and blending, transport and flow.Reliable agglomeration models are needed for improved understanding of the processes in general and of the complex role of numerous, interacting variables as well as for direct application to the design and control of industrial processes such as flocculation, granulation and pelletization. Ideally, the models should account for the primary forces responsible for agglomerate ·formation and growth, the effects of external forces on process dynamics, the development of agglomerate structure and its role in the process itself, and the effects of concurrent processes such as structure modification (e.g. compaction) and agglomerate breakage or degradation.In its most general form, the process of agglomeration involves taking discrete, independent particles, bringing them into contact with one another, promoting (or allowing) interparticle adhesion to occur and then causing structure rearrangement, usually under the action of external forces. The relative importance of these steps varies with the nature of the particulate system being agglomerated and with the kinds of agglomerates being produced. Coagulation or flocculation of particles dispersed in fluids is generally dominated by the contact and adhesion steps. In the granulation of powders, on the other hand, particles are already in contact so that structure rearrangement is the principal step."

"INTRODUCTION The Mayfield manganese property is about 25 miles south of Van Horn, in Jeff Davis County, Tex. The ore deposit is developed by a large open-cut and a small stope.An 8-ton sample was received for testing; it was taker at random from material on the mine dumps and consisted of a mixture of manganese oxides, barite, and siliceous gangue minerals. The manganese occurred largely as hard, massive, crystalline psilomelane, with a small amount of pyrolusite. The gangue minerals consisted of intermixed iron-stained sand stone, quartzite, chalcedony, calcite, quartz, and barite. Chemical analysis showed 8.9 percent manganese, 3.3 percent iron, 38.4 percent silica, 6.6 percent calcium carbonate, 7.1 percent barium, 3.1 percent alumina, 0.09 percent phosphorus 0.01 tungstic oxide, and less than 0.05 percentAnalysis of selected clean pieces of manganese minerals, free of gangue, showed 48.1 percent manganese end 13.4 percent barium, of which only 0.2 percent was present as barium sulfate. This indicated a limit in concentration. Barium was also present in the gangue as a separate mineral, barite (BaSO4), which has approximately the same specific gravity as the manganese oxide."

Accumulations of microorganisms in the in-situ leaching environment are believed responsible for plugging of the orebody and thus decreasing uranium extraction. To assess the contribution of microbial growth to this problem, packed columns of ore and core specimens were leached in the laboratory. Samples collected at four in-situ uranium mining operations revealed pseudomonads, xanthomonads, Bacillus sp. and Micrococcus sp. in numbers of 105 cfu/ml. These microorganisms, inoculated into simulated leaching conditions, decreased permeability in two uranium ores by one order of magnitude in 20 days. Hydrogen peroxide (0.2 g/l) alleviated microbial plugging in the laboratory. Periodic injection of hydrogen peroxide through the production well into the orebody may reduce microbial plugging problems in the field.

The feasibility of simultaneously burning several paths through a coalbed to develop a multiple path underground gasification system was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during two experiments, Boreholes were drilled through the overburden and into the coal and arranged in a circle approximately 50 feet from a central borehole. In the first experiment, in an area which had previously been hydraulically fractured,5 air was injected at the center borehole. The coal was ignited at the other boreholes and the fire fronts traveled toward the center, counter to the flow of air, to backward burn paths through the coalbed. Two paths were linked during the first 5 days of operation. The outlets of these two paths were throttled and air pressure was increased to maintain the flow of air, but no other linkages were made. Fourteen days after the two linkages these two paths were opened and gasification was carried on for 10 days, but with only moderate success. In an effort to overcome operating difficulties air was injected at the peripheral boreholes, and the gases were drawn off at the center borehole. Reversed flow operations continued for 12 days and two more paths linked. The heating value of the gas generally was higher than 100 British thermal units per standard cubic foot (B.t.u. per std. c.f.). Because only four of seven paths linked, however, the entire system could not be evaluated with respect to product-gas output and recovery of energy.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has demonstrated in laboratory tests that drilling with surface-charge-neutralizing concentrations of polyethylene oxide (PEO) polymer solutions simultaneously improves penetration rates and extends bit life. The applicability of this additive to improve drilling performance in coal measure rocks was demonstrated under field conditions at an abandoned mine land site in Pennsylvania and a producing coal mine property in Ohio. Penetration rate improvements ranging from 15 to 50 pet were obtained when core drilling through a variety of coal measure lithologies. Drilling cost analysis indicates that the small added cost of using the polymer is more than offset by the savings that result from demonstrated increased drilling penetration rates, which translate into drilling cost savings of about 10 to 30 pct. This report also gives chemical analyses of a variety of coal measure rocks and some corresponding local drilling water samples, obtained from a wide geographical base, along with threshold concentrations of PEO required to effect the improved drilling performance in these rocks. From these data, the threshold PEO concentrations needed to ensure improved drilling performance can be estimated for any coal measure rock suite. Proper techniques for mixing PEO solutions are also presented.

In a preliminary study of the beneficiation of iron ores conducted by the Bureau of Mines, one of the authors (T. T. Read) found it necessary to ascertain, if possible, how much effect a decrease in the silica content of an iron ore has upon the cost of making pig iron from the ore. In the beneficiation of iron ores the most important impurity to be removed is usually silica, and the amount that can be expended on a beneficiation process to reduce the silica content of the ore is obviously determined by the amount of increase in the value of the ore after beneficiation. The price that can actually be obtained for a beneficiated ore is, of course, a matter of negotiation between the seller and the buyer, but since the relative value of different grades of iron ore must be chiefly based upon the cost of making pig iron from them, an approximation as to the effect which decrease in the silica content of ore has upon the cost of snaking pig iron is an important guide in estimating what probable average gain will result from subjecting an ore to a beneficiation process. A search of the literature failed to reveal any detailed statement on this important topic, but fortunately the data are at hand to permit making an approximate calculation of the probable effect. Owing to the broad scope of the content and the diversity of interests represented, the Annual Report for 1953 has been divided into two separate publications. Each has been published by the Bureau of Mines as a Report of Investigations, and the respective titles follow: R. I. 5043, Part I - Oil From Coal. R. I. 5044, Part II - Oil From Oil Shale. Identical in each report, the introduction summarizes research progress made in 1953 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. 1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only bed of major importance in Marion County, 97 percent of the coal mined in the county having come from this bed. There are coal reserves in minor quantity in the Battle Creek bed, and production from this bed depends on a few small truck mines. The Richland bed, or Lower Sewanee, has been mined in the past, but no coal has been produced from it in late years. There are no production records of any other beds in the county, although same coal has been produced from them. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 61 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

This publication reviews recent U.S. Bureau of Mines studies of frictional ignition of a methane-air environment by coal mining bits cutting into sandstone and the effectiveness of remedial techniques to reduce the likelihood of frictional ignition. Frictional ignition with a mining bit always involves a worn bit having a wear flat on the tip of the bit. The worn bit forms hot spots on the surface of the sandstone because of frictional abrasion. The hot spots then can ignite the methane-air environment. A small wear flat forms a small hot spot, which does not give ignition, while a large wear flat forms a large hot spot, which gives ignition. The likelihood of frictional ignition can be somewhat reduced by using a mushroom-shaped tungsten-carbide bit tip on the mining bit and by increasing the bit clearance angle; it can be significantly reduced by using a water spray nozzle in back of each bit, which is carefully oriented to direct the water spray onto the sandstone surface directly behind the bit and thereby cool the hot spots formed by the worn bit. A bit replacement schedule must be used to avoid the formation of a dangerously worn bit.

Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person's body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm's center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to determine the influence of mining machine-mounted scrubbers on airflows and methane concentrations at the face when blowing ventilation systems are used. Tests were conducted in a full-scale ventilation gallery with a model mining machine that simulated airflow created by a dust scrubber. During the tests, ultrasonic anemometers were used to measure airflow speed and direction at several locations near the face. For the same test conditions, methane was released from the face and gas concentrations were measured at 21 locations above the machine using fixed point methanometers. Changes in airflow speed and direction are correlated with scrubber airflow and the measured methane distribution above the mining machine. The research results showed that operation of machine-mounted scrubbers improved face ventilation when blowing ventilation is used by increasing both the intake flow and the quantity of air reaching the face.

More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

This report describes in detail the results of petrographic research conducted on 21 phosphate ores representing important deposits in southwestern Montana , southeastern Idaho , and northeastern Utah . The ores are described and categorized by mineralogical and chemical composition , thermal behavior of organic carbon , and textural constitution . Descriptive and genetic classification schemes applicable to western phosphate ores are discussed ; results from related studies made of the collophane mineralogy are also presented . The latter studies were centered on determining unit - cell dimensions and CO₂ , P2O5 , and fluorine content of collophane concentrates of 11 high - grade phosphate- rock hand specimens selected solely for this purpose . On the basis of this investigation , operational methods have been developed for quantitatively describing textural and compositional features that are likely to be significant in determining the response of phosphate ores to conventional beneficiation treatments ; systems for classifying the ores in relation to these features have been proposed . Studies to date point out distinct textural and compositional variations in the western phosphates and illustrate their importance in determining optimum beneficiation procedure .

Towards the goal of achieving uniform-high-tensions in roofbolts to provide superior roof support[1-7] for extended periods, Terra Tek installed mechanical-anchor bolts in a mine in eight different ways -- under torque/thrust control with and without hardened washers, belleville washers and tension equalization; in a conventional manner with and without a hardened washer. The various bolt groups were analyzed in terms of their tension uniformity and mean tension levels. Installing the bolts accurately with ? a hardened washer under the bolthead, and ? proper torque/thrust control resulted in the mast uniformly tensioned bolts -- with a coefficient of variation of only 14%, an improvement of 3 times over a conventional installation. Also, these bolts maintained a high tension level -- 80% of the installation tension, compared to 50% achieved conventionally.

In characterizing tars obtained by the low-temperature carbonization of North Dakota lignite, infrared spectra have been an invaluable aid in both qualitative and quantitative examination. Quite, early in the tar-research program of the Federal Bureau of Mines it became evident that the small number of published spectra available for hydroxy-aromatics would be inadequate for comparative purposes when dealing with the wide range of compounds present in coal tar; therefore, compiling a catalog of spectra was begun as a continuing part of the tar program. Because these spectra should be valuable to other investigators in this and related fields, they are being presented in these reports. This supplement to the original publications presents the spectra (figs, I to 32), representing 32 compounds, largely phenolic materials. The major problem of this project has been the availability of materials for examination. Most of the compounds included in this supplement were synthesized at the Bureau of Mines Lignite Research Laboratory. Some were obtained from commercial sources, whereas the compound 2'-hydroxy-l-phenylnaphthalene was synthesized at the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Bruceton, Pa. The spectrum of 2-ethyl-4-methylphenol, figure 32, is a correction of the spectrum presented as figure 26 in the original reports

"Importance pf the small stone problem.Profitable disposal of limestone too small for making lime in the shaft kiln, is one of the most urgent problems in the lime industry. Reports received by the Bureau of Mines from 31 quarries show that the proportion of small stone varies from 2 to 40 per cent, averaging 18 per cent of gross pro¬duction, Modern methods of heavy blasting, and the use of crushers in large quarries tend to increase the proportion of small stone above that produced in early days when light blasting and hand sledging were almost universally used. There is also a growing movement toward underground operation of lime deposits, a method which in general produces a greater proportion of fines than is encountered in open-pit work. Thus the small stone problem is of growing importance, and demands the attention of every progressive lime producer. As the problem is of almost universal interest, it is urgently desired that every operator who reads this report will contribute from his knowledge or experience, answers to the questions on the final sheet.There are several markets in which small stone may be sold but in these markets the competition is generally keen and the prices low. The lime producer's chief product is lime, he understands its manufacture and marketing, and brings him a greater return than can be obtained from most limestone by-products. For these reasons it is evident that the conversion of small into lime is the nest desirable means of disposal."

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1993 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. For the continent as a whole, world shares of most commodities showed little change from those of 1992 although most output volumes showed a slight decline. There were no significant production increases, but there were significant decreases of cobalt and copper because of political instability in Zaire and production problems in Zambia, of chromite resulting from cutbacks in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and of phosphate rock owing to a lower output by producers in general. (See tables 1 and 2.) Among the most significant mineral commodities produced in Africa, ranked by portion of world production in 1993, were diamond, cobalt, chromite, gold, phosphate rock, manganese ore, uranium and petroleum. Others of importance in world trade were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, coal, copper, fluorspar, lithium minerals, platinum-group metals (PGM), titanium minerals (ilmenite and rutile), vanadium, vermiculite, and zircon. Several of these-chromite cobalt, diamond, and manganese-were not produced in the United States.
