The following; paper describes underground mining practices of the Riverside Cement Co. of Los Angeles, Calif., in the Stanley limestone deposit at Crestmore, Riverside County, Calif. It is one of a series of papers being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in tae various mining districts in the United States. "IntroductionThis paper on the kata thermometer is issued by the Bureau of Mines on account of the general interest in this instrument and the fact that it is frequently used in studies of mine ventilation conditions with regard to comfort and health of miners. It has been used in the studies being conducted along this line by the Bureau of Mines on the effects of high temperatures and humidities of air in mine working on the comfort conditions, as well as in studies of atmospheric conditions in mine, railway and vehicular tunnels.The study of the various physiological responses of the human body to different degrees of temperature combined with different percentages of relative humility in still and in moving air, now being conducted at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the bureau in the research laboratory of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, cooperating with the Bureau of and the U. S. Public Health Service, presents an added opportunity of investigating the instruments that have been devised to measure atmospheric conditions as they affect the comfort and health of human beings.The ordinary mercury thermometer, as pointed out by Heberden3 almost hundred years ago is a very inadequate instrument for measuring the physiological effects of atmospheric conditions. It merely accounts for that part of the body heat lost by raliation and convection, while as a matter of fact greater part of the body heat resulting from the metabolic process within the body is eliminated by means of evaporation from the surface of the body."

"INTRODUCTION Coals vary so widely in their burning characteristics that all coals prepared for domestic stoker use cannot be burned efficiently on every type of stoker. The overfeed stoker, a large number of which are in use in the Pacific Northwest, operates satisfactorily when burning low- to high-ash, noncaking bituminous or subbituminous coals, whereas on the clinkering-type, underfeed, bituminous stoker both caking and noncaking bituminous and subbituminous coals are burned, generally with ash contents below 12 percent and ash-softening temperatures between 1,800º and about 2,600º F. Because fly ash continues to be one of the most troublesome factors in domestic underfeed stokers, noncaking coals especially must be chosen carefully with respect to size composition, particularly as regards the exclusion of excessive fines. Their formation as a result of degradation in storage handling or because of crushing in .the stoker worm will increase the fly-ash nuisence.Bituminous and subbituminous coals with higher ash-softening temperatures and, often, higher ash contents have not been able to enter the domestic stoker-coal market in the Pacific northwest because clinkers are not formed readily during clinker-type underfeed-stoker burning, especially in mild weather, and because of the labor and attendant inconvenience required in handling larger volumes of ash. The work described in this report was undertaken to enable mines producing coals of the kind described to enter the stoker-coal markets. The anthracite stoker selected was one that conveys the refuse from the ash pit of the furnace and deposits it into one of two covered, dust-tight disposal cans."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a reconnaissance of the less accessible parts of the Beluga River coalfield in August 1957 to determine, if possible, which areas were most favorable for developing large reserves of coal suitable for open-pit mining. Several outcrops of subbituminous coal were observed within an area about 30 miles long and 3 miles wide; neither the length nor the width of the coal-bearing area was delineated by the examination. Coal beds 30 feet thick or more outcrop at two places, and beds 5 to 20 feet thick or more outcrop fairly abundantly along the Beluga River and its tributaries The coal measures appear to occur in a series of folds. The overburden comprises glacial gravels and poorly cemented sandstones and ranges from 20 to 400 feet in depth. Few partings were seen in any of the coal beds. Samples ranged in calorific value from 6,240 to 8,246 B. t. u. on an as-received basis. Adequate water is available for stripping by hydraulic methods.

This guide also gives procedures for obtaining United Nations (U.N.) classification for shipping outside the United States.

"The health, comfort, and efficiency of men engaged in the mining industry may be impaired, in some instances very seriously, by abnormal physical conditions of the mine air or by variations in its composition. This is true in some of sheet metal mines of the West where high temperatures with varying humidities are encountered. Physiological studies have been made in some of these mines showing the effects of various temperatures end humidities. As it is difficult to carry out studies on many controlled temperatures, it was thought best to make the experiments in a laboratory and apply the results to the industry insofar as practicableThe effects of moderately high temperatures and humidities are more difficult to measure perhaps than the extreme conditions, but may be predisposing causes of fatigue, discomfort and disease, A cooperative study of the physioloical effects of heat and humidity is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Public Health Service cooperative with the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, in the Research Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa."

Electrooxidation techniques were investigated on a bench scale by the Bureau of Mines to determine the applicability of the process for extracting molybdenum and rhenium from low-grade molybdenite concentrates. Parameters affecting the extraction, such as pulp density, power consumption, reagent requirements for pH control, and electrolytic cell configuration, were studied. Molybdenum and rhenium extractions of 98 to 99 percent were achieved from several concentrates containing 4.76 to 28.6 percent molybdenum and 180 ppm to 1,000 ppm rhenium. Optimum results were obtained by maintaining pH values between 5.5 and 7.0 during electrolysis and allowing the final pH to rise to about 8.2. Reagent consumption was 4 to 6 pounds of sodium carbonate per pound of molybdenum extracted. The power consumption declined from a range of 12 to 25 kilowatt hours per pound of molybdenum extracted with immersion electrodes to 9.7 kilowatt hours with a bipolar flow-through cell; however, molybdenum extraction was independent of cell configuration.

"PREFACEA general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed.Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township.The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on Figure 13 in Volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes.Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) is currently conducting a four-year study to assess the mineral resources and the mineral development potential of the 5.7 million acre Valdez Creek Mining District (VCMD) located in southcentral Alaska. The VCMD study is part of the Bureau's ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. This report is a summary of the 1988 field work. The field work involved collection of reconnaissance placer and rock samples, and also involved sampling and examination of the mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences which were identified by literature research of the geology, exploration history, and mining history of the district. During the 1988 field season, Bureau personnel spent a total of 11 weeks in the field, collected 1,006 rock and placer samples, and located, mapped, and sampled 106 of the known mineral occurrences. The Bureau has visited 243 of the 250 known mineral occurrences during the course of the VCMD project. Reconnaissance sampling for placer occurrences resulted in the identification of 4 previously unreported gold placer occurrences, and identification of 5 occurrences that contain detectable levels of platinum or palladium. Reconnaissance sampling for lode sources of base and precious metals resulted in the identification of 5 new Lode gold-silver occurrences, identification of 2 occurrences that contain elevated quantities of chromium, cobalt, nickel, palladium, and platinum, and identification of one occurrence that contains elevated quantities of copper, molybdenum, anti zinc.

The underground mining industry is presently using the fluid network analyzer and digital computer to analyze ventilation systems. The availability of the digital computer and ventilation programs to mining companies has escalated its use, permitting the design and modification of new or existing mine ventilation systems to be projected completely and thoroughly with consistent precision. Because the analog computer has been analyzing ventilation systems accurately for many years, a comparison of the analog and digital methods was warranted. This report summarizes a detailed comparison for one mine, based on parallel analyses by the two computer systems.

Colorado has been producing petroleum since 1863 but only recently has become a major oil State. The first well was drilled on Oil Creek near Florence, but out-put was relatively small until discovery and development of the Weber sandstone reservoir at Rangely. Oil was discovered in the Weber sandstone in 1933, and the reservoir was developed after 1940, bringing Colorado, in 1949, to 11th place among the 48 States as an oil producer. Colorado's output increased further because of the discovery and development of many fields in the Julesburg Basin since 1949 By 1954 Colorado was in ninth place and maintained that position through 1955.4/ Between 1946 and 1951, Colorado's oil production more than doubled, while the total United States production increased only 25 percent. It seems probable that production will continue to expand in Colorado for many years. This report presents analyses of 92 crude oils from 73 fields representing 90 percent of the production in 1955. Abridged analyses are listed for easy comparision, and complete analyses arc given in the appendix. Oil samples were collected for study from many different sources. Although many of the newer fields were not sampled, their oils probably are very similar to those from corresponding formations that were studied and tabulated.

Evaluation of raw materials for mineral wool is one phase of the Bureau of Mines broad program for the more effective utilization: of our mineral resources. The experimental work and test-evaluation results on several raw materials as useful components for the production of mineral wool are presented in this report. Samples from all sections of the United States, including copper slag from Tacoma, Wash., pebble phosphate slime from Florida, and granites from Massachusetts and Minnesota, have been blown into mineral wool successfully in the laboratory tests. Maximum conservation of the Nation's mineral and manpower resources requires maximum utility of those resources. Al though the domestic reserves of oil, gas, and coal are tremendous, judicious use of these fuels through the use of proper insulation will insure the highest thermal efficiency. The effectiveness of mineral wool as a heat-insulating material has assumed an increasingly important role in the national economy, and it has become a fuel saver in countless applications. The most immediate concern to many is the use of mineral wool in the home, which promotes uniform temperature and minimizes drafts by reducing heat transfer through the walls, ceiling, and floors. There are, however, many industrial and commercial uses that require large volumes of mineral wool each year.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. "INTRODUCTION The use of sheaths or hollow cylinders of flame-extinctive materials surrounding cartridges of permissible explosives has been developed during the last few years; the history of sheathed explosives in their salient development in Belgium was treated recently in a publication of the Bureau of Mines. 6/ This development is of great interest in explosives technology, for it holds possibilities of reducing further the ignition hazards that may cause many coal-mine disasters. The township interest in sheathed explosives in this country is attested by the passage of some State laws permitting the use of such explosives on shift 7/; inquiries are received in increasing numbers concerning the effects of sheaths on practical hazards as well as the general technology underlying their use."

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of California is the eighth in a series which will cover the producing districts of the United States, and is supplementary to Serial 2595 of the Bureau of Mines, which includes discussion of results, summary tables, and selected typical analyses of California crudes. The present report contains additional individual analyses of crude, oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties.

The first national survey covering sales of fuel oil by States and principal uses was made in 1926 by E. B. Swanson of the Bureau of Mines (then under the U. S. Department of Commerce) under a cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute. This annual study, covering the market for fuel oil, was made through 1930 with the financial help of the institute bat has since been continued by the Bureau up to the present time. The scope and coverage of the survey have gradually changed over the years as new uses for fuel oil have been found and new products have come into importance resulting in market expansion. Range oil (No. 1 fuel oil or kerosine) came into use for cooking and space-heating daring the depression era in New England, and it was first reported as a total in the 1931 survey. In 1934 the sales were compiled on a State basis. State totals for distillate fuel oil, Diesel fuel, and residual fuel-oil sales were first shown for 1934 and by principal uses and States in 1937. Kerosine deliveries by States and main uses were also released for the first time in 1937.

This report contains Bureau of Mines analyses of 291 samples of crude petroleum from the Gulf Coast Area of Louisiana and Texas. Included are 65 analyses from 51 Louisiana fields and 226 analyses from 216 Texas fields. Analyses from the Texas fields include 90 from 58 Upper Gulf Coast fields, 47 from 28 Middle Gulf Coast fields, and 89 from 40 Lower Gulf Coast fields. The analyses represent fields that produced 1,000 barrels or more per day during at least one of the years 19.57 through 1961, with the exception of 23 analyses from the Texas fields. The fields considered are listed by state and geographical groupings, with field names arranged alphabetically within each grouping. The tabulation also includes information concerning the geological sources of the samples. General characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses are summarized. Crude oil production data are given for the fields for 1960 and 1961 and are cumulative through 1961.

The possibility of chemical analysis by identification of characteristic X-ray spectral lines was first suggested by H. C. J. Moseley in 1913.3/ For a given spectral series it was found that the frequency of the characteristic radiation was proportional to the square of the atomic number of the excited atom. Siegbahn and his coworkers improved the instrumentation and accurately determined the wavelengths of the characteristic spectra for most of the elements .4/ In fluorescent X-ray spectroscopy, the characteristic X-rays of atoms are emitted or fluoresced upon absorption of primary or incident X-rays of shorter wave-lengths (higher energies). The K spectral lines are used for elements of atomic numbers 13 to about 63, and the L series for those above atomic number 50. Whether the K or L lines are used for elements 50-63 depends upon the type of instrumentation available. The laboratory at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., uses the K lines up to atomic number 57 and the L lines for thong elements of higher atomic number.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines, the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.
