To obtain a better understanding of the crystallization of fluoride containing amphiboles from melts, an investigation of the range of stability between fluoramphi-boles and other minerals was conducted by the Bureau of Mines. This study has shown that the stability of fluoramphiboles is strongly influenced by both fluoride concentration and isomorphic replacement. Over 150 reactions were made with different compositions and reaction conditions. substitutions attempted and the phases that formed when the composition was crystallized by cooling from the melt are discussed. The attainment of equilibrium in these multicomponent systems is not claimed. Many ions that would be expected to enter the amphibole structure instead resulted in crystallization of phases other than amphibole. Those compositions that resulted in a high yield of acicular fluoramphibole by crystallization from the melts are shown in table 2. The fluoramphiboles obtained from melts typically had an acicular crystal habit and a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs' scale. Although many had relatively high length to cross section ratios, none were fibrous; it was concluded that the possibility of synthesizing a fibrous fluoramphibole from a melt was low. However, many compositions can be crystallized into a tough, hard, impact-resistant mass of interlocking acicular crystals.

This bulletin contains a statement of certain results that will be embodied in a report describing investigations of the combustion of fuel made by the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines in a specially constructed long furnace. The furnace forms part of the fuel-testing plant at Pittsburg, Pa., which was established and equipped by t.he Geological Survey, but passed under the control of the Bureau of Mines on July 1, 1910, when a t.ransfer of fuel-test.ing investjgations, authorized by act of Congress, became effective. The work discussed in this bulletin was done under the direction of the Geological Survey. The furnace was designed and built for an experimental study of the processes of combustiop, this study being part of a comprehensive plan for testing fuels to determine their heat value and the manner in which they can be used to best advantage. Although the main object of the researches made with the furnace by the Geological Survey was to examine critically the production of sensible heat by combustion along the path of the gases rising from the fuel, an interesting as well as important side problem developed in the study of the simultaneous dissipation of the heat through the walls and roof . of the furnace. Thus incidental data were collected on the temperature gradient through the walls at several places. These temperature data. (together with the heat conductivity of the material of the walls) formed the basis for calculating the heat dissipated through the walls. The object of this report is to present and discuss these temperature data. The discussion particularly concerns the air-space type of wall construction as compared with the solid brick wall or walls type, in which the air space is filled with some solid material of low heat conductivity. The conclusion of the authors, which perhaps will surprise some readers, is that, so far as loss of heat is concerned, a solid wall of brick or any ordinary material is preferable to a hollow wall of the same total thickness, especially if the air space in the hollow wall is near the furnace side. There is a general belief that l?ince air is a poor conductor of heat, air spaces built into the walls of a furnace will prevent or reduce heat dissipation through the wa.lls. Although there may be instances of furnace walls in which such construction reduces the rate of heat flow through them, yet as a rule the effect of the air space is just the opposite. While the heat does travel very slowly through the air by conduction, it leaps over the air space readily by radiation. Although this latter mode of heat propagation is common in nature, the laws governing it are not generall;y known and are seldom taken into consideration when furnace walls are being designed. It may be stated here that the quantity of heat passing through a. portion of a solid wall by conduction depends on the difference between the temperatures of the two planes limiting the portion of the wall. The quantity of heat that passes across the air space in the waH depends on the difference of the fourth powers of the absolute temperatUI: es of the surfaces inclosing Hie air space. It follows that, in case the heat. passes by conduction through the solid'portion of the wall, the loss remains approximately the same so long as the temperature of the two limiting planes remains constant, no matter what may be the temperature of the two planes. On the other hand, the heat passing across the air space by radiation increases rapidly with the temperatures of the inclosing surfaces, although the difference between these temperatures may remain constant. This feature will be shown by curves in the latter part of this paper and thoroughly discussed. The important point is that the air space, which is advantageous in the walls of a refrigerator because the temperatures are low, is objectionable in a furnace wall because the temperatures are high. It is customary to put air spaces in furnace walls between the firebrick linings and the common brick. Usually the fire-brick lining is only half a brick thick, which construction brings the air space too close to the furnace. The result is that the temperatures of the surfaces inclosing the air spaces are too high, and in consequence too much heat is radiated across the spaces. The heat passing through such walls would be much reduced if the air spaces were filled with brick, or, better, with some cheap nonconducting materials, such as ash, sand, mineral wool, etc. Even where the fire-brick lining is one brick thick (9 inches), the temperature in the furnace may be high enough to raise the temperatures of the air-space surfaces so much that the heat radiated across the space will amount to more than would the heat conducted through a filling, were the filling only common brick. This last statement is amply justified by the data here presented.

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the investigations of strategic mineral deposits in the United States under the Strategic Minerals Act. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined and sampled numerous deposits pf fluoride ores in the Western States. Sample from those deposits that warranted further investigation were submitted to the Ore Dressing Section of the Salt Lake Station for metallurgical testing. This paper gives data summarizing the results obtained from laboratory studios of fluorite ores submitted from 12 deposits in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Wyomong. Only four of the Ores were found to be amenable to beneficiation for the production of acid-grade fluorspar concentrates with good recoveries. However, all of the samples were amenable to the production of concentrates meeting chemical specifications for metallurgical-grade spar.For the sake of clarity and convenience in presenting data, this report has been divided into six parts, each pertaining to metallurgical studies of fluorspar ores of a single State."

One of the first matters to receive attention from the Bureau of Mines when it was authorized to undertake investigations relating to wastes in the mineral industries was the smoke problem at smelting and ore-roasting plants. This bulletin is published by the bureau primarily for persons who seek information on the subject of metallurgical smoke but are unacqllainted with the technical language of metallurgy. It is, of course, not possible to free a techniCal subject entirely from teclmicalities, but, 80 far as possible, statements are made in plain and simple English. Metallurgical smoke causes considerable friction between the metallurgical industry and agriculture in certain parts of the country. Owners of smelting plants are making every effort to devise ways and means to do away with possible damage and annoyance from smoke and are meeting with success. The problem is peculiarly difficult in this country because of the large tonnages of material that must be handled. The solution of the problem is not yet at hand and much work still remains to be done. As the mineral industry is one of the great basic industries of the country and of necessity is entitled to full consideration, it should be accorded freedom to work out the smoke problem to the benefit of all concerned. The effort is made in this paper to present the problem of metallurgical smoke as it actually exists, without bias of any kind. The writer takes this opportunity to express his indebtedness to the sources of information on which he drew, many of which are enumerated in the selected bibliography at the end of this paper. In connection with the author's use of the present tense in describing plants and methods, the reader should note that none of the references in that bibliography is of later date than 1913. Much information was obtained by personal visits and by correspondence, and thanks are hereby tendered to all persons who kindly furnished data. The writer desires to thank particularly F. G. "1. Reserve estimates have been made for eight coal beds in Monongalia County, W.Va., but only the Pittsburgh, Sewickley, and Upper Freeport beds are important at this time. The Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Waynesburg, and Upper Freeport beds contain the largest recoverable reserves.2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 3,526 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,294 mil¬lion tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed except the Pittsburgh were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.3. Recoverable reserves of coal have been estimated in beds 28 inches and more thick. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian region. The weighted average recovery for all beds in Monongalia County, as determined by this investigation, is 47.9 percent. This percentage is based on the total thickness of coal (less partings three-eighths inch thick or more) in the bed rather than on the thickness of the coal mined. Based on the weighted average percentage of recovery for all beds in Monongalia County, the recoverable reserves are estimated at 1,577 million tons as of January 1, 1954.4. Monongalia County coals of the major producing beds are of high-volatile a bituminous rank.5. The Pittsburgh and Lower Freeport beds in this county yield coal that can be used as metallurgical coal, especially when blended with low-volatile coals. The Lower Freeport coal is coked singly and in beehive ovens, and makes good metallurgical coke.INTRODUCTIONThe investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal was planned to cover three phases: (1) Estimation of known measured and indicated recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) study of methods of upgrading marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) study of carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making."

With the ever-increasing demand for energy in all forms, electrical energy generated from geothermal resources could become an important energy source in the next few decades. Geothermal fluids, which contain appreciable quantities of dissolved salts and gases, are generally corrosive to materials of construction. Since data on corrosion of materials in geothermal brines is limited, the literature was surveyed through February 1972 to obtain a compilation of information on corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys, copper and copper-base alloys, carbon steel and cast iron, stainless steels, chromium-iron alloys, nickel-and cobalt-base alloys, and titanium in heated brines including sea water.

Evaluation by the Bureau of Mines of published expansion values for magnesium oxide shows significant variation in values, which may be attributed to sample variables, experimental errors, or systematic differences between measuring techniques. To eliminate the sample variable in measuring expansion, thermal expansion characteristics of a high-purity polycrystalline magnesium oxide were determined by 21 cooperating laboratories using one or more of the following techniques; X-ray camera, X-ray diffractometer, dilatometer, interferometer, and telemicroscope. All expansion values were corrected by the author to a single reference temperature of 25° C. Linear expansion was expressed as a power series in the form of the following equation. Expansion (percent) = [[ A + B (?t) + C (?t)2] ?t 104] The constants, A, B, and C, were determined by least square techniques for X-ray camera, X-ray diffractometer, and dilatometer data separately, and for combined data of all five techniques. Expansion values are tabulated from 26° C. to 1,400° C. in 2° C. intervals using constants derived from X-ray camera data. Below approximately 500° C., expansion values obtained by dilatometric and interferometric methods are significantly lower than those by X-ray methods; above 500° C., this bias decreases rapidly. Comparison of results within methods showed the least variance for X-ray camera results; dilatometer and X-ray diffractometer results have about the same variance. The average deviations, in percent, between observed and calculated expansion values among methods were approximately 10 percent from 100°C. to 300°C., 5 percent from 300°C. to 500°C., and 2 percent from 500°C. to 1,400°C. Maximum deviations were approximately twice as large in most instances.

The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactorily demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No, 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia.

This report describes the performance of Phase I of a project to design, analyze, and demonstrate a multilift longwall mining method applicable to mining coal seams twelve (12) feet or more in thickness. A non-simultaneous multilift operation is the most viable thick seam mining technique for introduction to the United States coal industry. In the case of the proposed site at Emery, Utah it will result in an increase in coal extraction from 30% with present methods to at least 50% and possibly more. The major technological advance involved in this project is mining a lower lift under a previously mined upper lift. To accomplish this, entries must be developed and maintained beneath the upper lift gob. This will necessitate the use of steel supports at frequent intervals throughout the lower lift' entry system. This has not been done in the U.S. to date. An economic analysis of the project indicates that, while this method will result in a higher than average cost per ton for coal mined, the coal would be competitive with current-operation in the area.

A standard computer communications protocol (DDCMP) was utilized throughout the system. The initial Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP),Version 1.0, was released at the 19th Ground Control Conference. This original program has since been updated to Version 2.3 which was released in May, 2001. This paper describes the additional features of Version 2.3, focusing primarily on the following three aspects: (1) including uncontrolled convergence into the design requirements for standing roof supports, (2) the addition of design procedures for cable bolts as an alternative secondary roof support, and (3) the addition of new standing roof support technologies. Another new feature which should facilitate the development of design criteria for standing roof support is the capability to define ground reaction curves through convergence measurements alone without having to make support loading measurements. There are several other new features provided in Version 2.3 which are only briefly addressed in the paper. These include: (1) additional graphics capabilities to facilitate rapid assessment of support comparisons, (2)an East-West designation for support selection to more accurately provide cost and support availability data, (3) additional safety measures including a safety factor to identify support design near the peak support capacity, checks to see if the support dimensions comply with aspect ratio requirements, and a measure of roof coverage for the design layout of the support system. These new features of STOP provide more capabilities to design and analyze secondary roof support systems for conditions which could not be fully analyzed in the original version of the program.

Progress reports, followed by bulletins, will be prepared from time to time dealing with other subjects included in the general study of mining methods at individual mines, such as mine development, drilling, and blasting; stoping methods (each principal stoping method to be summarized in a separate paper); ventilation; wage, contract end bonus systems, etc.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Arizona, Sandia National Laboratories, and Zonge Engineering and Research Organization, Inc., conducted cooperative field tests of six electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods to compare their effectiveness in locating a brine solution simulating in situ leach solution or a high-conductivity plume of contamination. The brine was approximately 160 m below the surface. The testsite was the University's San Xavier experimental mine near Tucson, AZ. Geo- physical surveys using surface and surface-borehole, time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) induction; surface controlled-source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT); surface-borehole, frequency- domain electromagnetic (FEM) induction; crosshole FEM; and surface magnetic field ellipticity were conducted before and during brine injection. The surface TEM data showed a broad decrease in resistivity. CSAMT measurements with the conventional orientation did not detect the brine, but measurements with another orientation indicated some decrease in resistivity. The surface-borehole and crosshole methods located a known fracture and other fracture zones inferred from borehole induction logs. Surface magnetic field ellipticity data showed a broad decrease in resistivity at depth following brine injection.

In 1988, the aggregate value of total world international export trade in mineral commodities was estimated at nearly $542 billion in current (1988) dollars, which was about 8.6% above the 1987 level, but still 23.7% below the record high set in 1980. Comparable comprehensive data for 1989 were not available in time for inclusion in this chapter, but 1989 returns for developed market economy countries only were 1 1.8% above those for 1988. These countries accounted for about 50% of the total mineral commodity export trade in 1988. It would be unsound to utilize the overall 11.8% growth rate for mineral commodity export trade for these countries to extrapolate the growth in total world mineral commodity trade because these developed market economy countries account for substantially different shares of the five major mineral commodity groups listed in table 2. Specifically, developed market economy countries in 1988 accounted for 56% of world export of ore, concentrate, and scrap, 74.7% of world exports of iron and steel, 71.7% of world exports of nonferrous metals, and 57.8% of all exports of crude nonmetals, but only 26.6% of world exports of mineral fuels. Moreover, even within each of these groups, the actual product mix included in developed market economy country aggregates differ from that in developing market economy country aggregates and in centrally planned economy country aggregates. Nonetheless, an increase of 9% to 12% in the value of world mineral commodity export trade seems indicated by available returns.

Correlations between mass spectra and molecular structures of 186 organic sulfur compounds are discussed. The olefinic ions, the alkyl ions, the CnE2n+1 ions, the m/e 61 ions, and the m/e 35 ions in the spectra of thiols are related to molecular structure. In the spectra of sulfides, the olefinic ions, the m/e 61 ions, the m/e 35 ions, the CnH2n+1S+ ions, and the CnH2n+1SH+ ions are correlated with molecular structure. For disu1fides, the correlations relate HSSF+& and RSSH+ ions to molecular structure. Base peaks of alkylthiophenes are correlated to their molecular structures. Some unimolecular reactions of sulfur compounds in the mass spectrometer are considered. A cyclic intermediate is suggested for the reaction which produces m/e 47, CH3S+, and m/e 48, CH4S+, ions in the spectra of sulfides. An expanded ring is suggested as a possible intermediate in the reactions of thiophenes. Heats of formation of sulfur-containing ions and their appearance potentials are presented in tabular form. Ionization potentials for sulfur-containing radicals and molecules are also given. Discussion of the spectra, tabulated in the appendixes, provides an insight into the relationship of the molecular structure of a compound to the mass-to-charge ratios and the intensities of the ions in its mass spectrum. Correlations of the mass spectra with molecular structures are empirically developed by observing regularities in the spectra of the reference compounds. Correlations extend the usefulness of mass spectra because they can be employed to determine the molecular structure of an unknown compound.

A study on a small laboratory scale was made of the use of ammoniacalammonium carbonate for batch leaching Mn from low- grade manganiferous materials ( 6 to 16 pct Mn) obtained from deposits in the southern district of Aroostook County , Maine . These materials were partially reduced at 500 ° to 700 ° C with H₂ or CO and then leached with solutions of NH and CO₂ dissolved in water . Extraction of 80 to 90 pct of the Mn was obtained from some sample materials , but 10 to 34 pct of the iron was also extracted . Material from the Littleton Ridge deposit contained manganese intimately associated with Fe , a condition which contributed to difficulties in obtaining a commercially acceptable product . Extensive investigations of the leach and reduction processes with various mixtures of H₂ and water vapor , and CO and CO₂ , failed to disclose a set of conditions for selectively leaching the manganese . Finely divided metallic Fe was probably produced during the reduction steps so that Fe was leached with the Mn in the subsequent extractions .
