Long-haul dump (LHD) vehicles used in underground mining are known to expose workers to important levels of whole-body vibration1. These vehicles are generally designed without suspension and may be categorized as small or large LHDs depending on whether their respective load capacities are lower or larger than 3.5 cubic yards. While the majority of older vehicles are equipped with a rigid or unsuspended seat, more recent LHDs often incorporate a suspension seat. The objective of this study was to define the vibration spectral characteristics of most commonly encountered large and small LHD vehicles operating in mining operations. This was done in an effort to categorize the vehicles in terms of vibration spectral classes to be reproduced on a laboratory whole-body vibration simulator to assess the vibration attenuation performance of a typical LHD suspension seat. Methods Vertical vibration measured at the seat attachment point of 8 small and 8 large LHD vehicles operating underground in typical mining operations under loaded and unloaded conditions was considered as the basis for defining the spectral classes. By regrouping the data collected for each LHD vehicle size and load condition, the overall distribution of acceleration power spectral density (PSD) of measured floor vibration was determined over the 0.5 to 20 Hz frequency range. Mean and envelopes of maximum and minimum values of PSD spectra were computed to define the spectral classes, along with the corresponding values of frequency weighted rms acceleration determined in accordance to the ISO 2631-1 standard2. These spectra were further used to calculate the displacements needed to drive a whole-body vibration simulator consisting of a platform supported by two servo-hydraulic actuators having a total stroke of ±100 mm. For validation purposes, the vibration acceleration spectra measured on the simulator were compared with the target spectra representing the spectral classes. Finally, the vibration transmissibility characteristics of a typical suspension seat were determined under sine sweep excitation using both a rigid mass load and a human subject having a mass of 62 kg and 85 kg, respectively. The SEAT value, representing the ratio of seat to base frequency-weighted rms acceleration, was further measured under each of the defined LHD vibration spectral classes by loading the seat with an 85 kg subject. Tests were repeated three times and the mean SEAT values were determined to assess the seat’s ability to reduce exposure to whole-body vibration in LHD vehicles. Results Three spectral classes applicable to both loaded and unloaded conditions were defined as shown in Figure 1: one for large and two for small LHDs. The influence of load on frequency-weighted rms acceleration was found to be negligible for large and Class I small LHDs, while a shift of the peak acceleration PSD to lower frequencies was noted for the loaded vehicles. A probabilistic slope stability computer model was developed at Utah State University and independently evaluated by CH2M Hill Consulting Engineers as a design and analysis tool. Volume I of this report describes the model and Volumes III and IV are users manuals for the computer programs. This volume (Volume II) constitutes the report by the CH2M Hill. It includes a description of a field investigation and stability analysis of an existing tailings dam. Based on the results of the analysis, the tailings dam was evaluated for redesign using probabilistic considerations. Conclusions are made regarding the usefulness of the model as a design tool.

Reduce the potential for injuries in underground mines by providing an alternative to manually lifting and holding heavy roof-support beams. The Problem I-beams, rail sections, and wooden cross-beams are often used in mine haulageways where extensive roof support is needed. Studies by the Bureau of Mines have shown that many mines must resort to manually lifting, moving and installing these beams. Such manual-handling activities have the potential for causing injury to mine workers, particularly back injuries. I-beams used for roof support can typically weigh from 400-500 lbs. Rail sections weigh about the same as the I-beams. Wooden beams can weigh from 200 to 300 lbs. To lift a single beam usually requires the efforts of 3 to 5 mine personnel.

The Bureau of Mines is studying possible modifications in conventional ore-processing methods that will confine and permit controlled disposal of radioactive liquid wastes. Stream and ground water pollution from radio-active nuclides, principally radium 226 and thorium 230, in liquid wastes from uranium mills can be minimized by reusing the waste solution within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in an acid leach-resin-in-pulp flowsheet was investigated in the laboratory. The process consists of acid leaching for dissolution of the uranium, sand-slime separation and countercurrent decantation washing for recovery of a pregnant slime slurry, and the use of ion-exchange resin for recovery of uranium from the slurry. Reuse of clarified barren effluent for washing in the simulated mill circuit was carried through 55 cycles. Dissolution of uranium from the ore averaged 97.5 percent. Washing efficiency of 99.9 percent was attained when using 4.35 volume tons4 of combined barren effluent and makeup water per ton of ore. Absorption of uranium from the pregnant slime slurry by an ion-exchange resin averaged over 99.9 percent.

"INTRODUCTION The Sullivan Mine was examined by Thomas L. Chapman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in March 1943. Samples taken from the few mineralized exposures justified further investigation of the property. The mining industry of Cameroon continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. Crude petroleum production has become the most important facet of Cameroon's economic development. Oil production was estimated to be 6.3 million tons in 1983 compared with 5.2 million tons in 1982 and 4.3 million tons in 1981. Over two-thirds of its export income was attributed to crude oil. The country's only refinery, dedicated in 1981, has a production capacity of 2 million tons. Cameroon has become self- sufficient in petroleum products since commissioning the refinery. The oil sector contributed approximately 13.5% to Cameroon's gross domestic product in 1982-83. Oil production was expected to rise from 125,000 barrels per day in 1983 to 156,000 barrels per day in 1985 when output peaks. Cameroon's ultimate recoverable reserves have been calculated at 100 million tons, or 750 million barrels of oil.

Descriptions are given of the techniques and apparatus used by the Bureau of Mines for determinations of flat plate ignition quenching distance and minimum spark ignition energy. The descriptions include discussions of reaction vessel materials, shapes, and sizes and discussions of electrode configurations. Spherical, hemispherical, or flat plate electrodes are recommended. The preferred metal in electrodes and electrode supports is stainless steel; the flat plate electrodes incorporate flanges of low electrical conductivity which are most frequently formed from glass. Various aspects of the electrical energy supply system are discussed and suitable arrangements of components are indicated. The concept of a thermal relaxation time is introduced as a basis for the choice of a minimum interspark time during the testing of a gas mixture. The following indicate the varied conditions under which these tech were utilized: Mixture pressures between 10 mm Hg and 45 psig, initial temperatures between -78° and +198° C, and gaseous mixtures representing wide ranges of cL.. D reactivity and corrosiveness. Minimum ignition energies were determined which varied from about 10-7 joule to nearly 103 joule.

This paper 3/gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Clark County, Nev., made from November 18 to December 22, 1936, and from February 9 to March 8, 1937-in all, 63 days. While the field work Was being done, virtually all of the mining districts in the county were visited and many data on active and inactive properties were obtained. The report covers the locations of the various mining districts, the nature of the deposits, information on past operations, current activity, and general data likely to be useful to operators, investors, and others interested in mining. The geology of the deposits is discussed only briefly. The principal metal-mining districts in the county are Goodsprings, Eldorado, and Searchlight. The zinc-lead ores of Goodsprings have been the most important economically, followed by the gold-silver ores of Eldorado and Searchlight. In the industrial-mineral field, gypsum, limestone, silica sand, and borates are the principal products. Metal mining in the county is characterized by numerous small operations and the ores are either milled locally or shipped to distant smelters.

The investigation of the iron-gadolinium phase diagram is part of a project undertaken by the Bureau of Mines and sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission to investigate rare-earth alloys. Data from the investigation of the iron-gadolinium phase diagram revealed a single eutectic system with very limited terminal solubility and three intermediate phases. The eutectic point occurs at about 85 percent gadolinium, and the eutectic isotherm, which occurs at 850° C., extends from the compound Fe2Gd to 99-plus percent gadolinium. Very little solubility of the solid phases in each other was observed. The three intermediate phases, FegGd, Fe3Gd, and FeaGd, melt incongruently at peritectic isotherms at 1,320°, 1,150°, and 1,080° C., respectively. The crystalline systems of the three phases were determined as follows: FegGd, hexagonal; Fe3Gd, hexagonal or rhombohedral; and FeaGd, face-centered cubic. No lowering or raising of the alpha-gamma iron transformation at 910° C., the gamma-delta iron transformation at 1,388° C., or the gadolinium transformation at 1,262° C. was observed. The principal methods used in determining the iron-gadolinium phase diagram were melting-point determinations, thermal analyses, metallographic examination, and X-ray diffraction analyses. Melting, heat treating, and thermal analyses were conducted in a vacuum or under a helium atmosphere because of the avidity with which oxygen combines with gadolinium at elevated temperatures. A few hardness values were determined, but they had no part in the derivation of the phase diagram. No other mechanical properties were determined.

Comparative data from ASTM method of test E-162 and large-scale trials in the Experimental Mine show that the flame-spread quality of brattice cloth and other ventilation control materials can effectively be evaluated by either method. Materials having a flame spread index of 25 or less, as determined by the simpler and more economical laboratory test ASTM E-162, do not present a serious fire hazard when used in coal mines.

Vibration exposure at workplaces is generally multi-axial. The health effects of vibration exposure also likely depend on the vibration direction. Therefore, there is a wide interest in the simulation of multi-axial vibration in laboratory experiments. Advances in technology have led to the development of a new 3-D test system for studying hand-transmitted vibration exposure and health effects. The purposes of this paper are to introduce the system and to present the results of its preliminary evaluations. Test System As shown in Figure 1, the system is basically composed of three vibration generators, a multi-axis vibration control system, instrumented handle, handle fixture, and shaker-fixture linkages (stingers). [ ] Figure 2 shows the array of three vibration generators (MB Dynamics, Energizer BLACK-500 lbs) and their associated support bases and foundation developed by MB Dynamics (Cleveland, USA), which create the 3-axis simultaneous motion. These electrodynamic exciters are powered by power amplifiers which provide current proportional to the analog drive signal from a controller. The controller (JAGUAR Multi-Input/Multi-Output closed-loop vibration controller) was provided by Spectral Dynamics, San Jose, California, USA). NIOSH-designed instrumented handle was equipped on the system.

This final report describes the work performed by Gulton Battery Corporation under USBM Contract No. HO-112033, entitled "Research and Development on Lithium-Nickel Fluoride Batteries For Mint Life Support Equipment". The lithium-nickel fluoride couple was chosen For this investigation because of its high theoretical energy density (626 Wh/lb), its ability to operate at ambient temperatures and the fact that it showed promise as a secondary system. The theoretical energy density of the lithium-nickel fluoride couple is ten times greater than that of the widely used lead-acid battery and three times greater than the silver-zinc battery which has the highest theoretical energy density of the commercially available secondary systems. The experimental program first evaluated the cell components individually. The results of these studies then formed the basis for investigations of cell performance using experimental three-plate cells. These cells consisted of one nickel-fluoride and two lithium electrodes. All work was performed in a glove box under an argon atmosphere which was sufficiently pure to maintain the shiny appearance on freshly prepared lithium surfaces. The major portion of the work effort was concerned with the nickel fluoride electrode. Binder, conductive diluent, fabrication technique, as well as the nickel fluoride active material itself, were considered. Criteria for binder materials were established and six classes of materials encompassing thirteen binders were evaluated. The candidate materials were initially screened for appropriate chemical and physical properties and finally evaluated in three.-plate cells, Two epoxy powders emerged as the most promising binders. Two types of conductive diluent were evaluated. The first is a carbon black of low bulk density and high surface area. This material is a good conductive diluent; however, electrodes fabricated with it lacked good mechanical strength. It was hypothesized that a uni¬form, small particle size, low specific surface area would improve the mechanical properties of the electrodes. Therefore, two samples of graphicic materials, milled to uniform powders in the one-to-ten micron range were evaluated. Electrodes prepared with the graphitic materials had superior mechanical properties, However, their electrical performance was significantly poorer and voltage losses of 0.2 to 0.3 volts were observed. Several electrolyte solutions were evaluated. N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone was tested but found to be incompatible in the presence of lithium. Lithium perchlorate, lithium hexafluoroarsenate, and lithium bromide were tested as two-component electrolytes in propylene carbonate solvent and their performance compared with that of the single electrolyte solutions, Lithium perchlorate gave the best performance. Lithium hexafluoroarsenate was also evaluated in methyl formate and appears to give equivalent performance. The lithium perchlorate-propylene carbonate system is preferred as it is easier to handle and less expensive.

This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities. The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented, and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed. It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred.

In This Chapter [Instruments for measuring dust How to calculate the amount of dust from a source How to get a valid concentration measurement Sampling to assess control technology effectiveness] When there is more than one source of dust, sampling may be required to find which dust sources are most significant. Then, efforts to reduce dust can be concentrated where they will have the most impact. This chapter explains how to perform dust source sampling. It describes two kinds of instruments that are available and discusses their limitations. It explains how environmental variables such as concentration gradients, dust dilution, and production changes can impact dust measurements. It also suggests practical ways to improve the validity of dust source measurements under adverse conditions, such as high-velocity airflow or the presence of water mist in the air. [Dust source sampling at coal mine longwalls and at tunnels is more complicated. Chapters 3 and 7 have more information on sampling in those circumstances.] TWO KINDS OF INSTRUMENTS FOR MEASURING DUST Gravimetric samplers. The conventional gravimetric sampler is a good device for measuring dust because it is the instrument used for compliance measurements. This dust sampler consists of an air pump, a small cyclone that separates out the respirable size fraction of the dust cloud, and a filter to collect the respirable dust. In coal mines, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)-approved gravimetric sampler uses a 10-mm Dorr-Oliver cyclone operating at an airflow of 2.0 L/min [30 CFR78 74 (2002)]. A correction factor of 1.38 is applied to make the results consistent with the U.K. MRE sampler, the instrument on which the 2.0 mg/m3 coal dust standard is based.

This report contains information on the relation between and precision or reproducibility of counts (light-and dark-field) of the dust in liquid from simultaneous impinger, midget-impinger, electric-precipitator, and filter-paper samples. The impinger was the main sampler used from about 1922 to 1939 by industrial hygienists in the United States for collecting samples of unhygienic dust from the atmospheric environment of workers. The midget-impinger, a small modification of the preceding impinger described in 1937, has been the sampler used most since about 1939. Electric precipitators5/6/ have been used to a limited extent, mainly by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratory, for obtaining results comparable to impinger results. A filter-paper sampler for obtaining results comparable to impinger results has been described by Brown. All these samplers have a high collecting efficiency for particles larger than 1 micron in diameter revealed by the usual light-field counting procedure. However, their collecting efficiencies are quite variable for the smaller particles revealed by the dark-field counting procedure used in this study. Published information on the relation between the results of these samplers is limited and scattered. Summaries of some of this information are given in this report along with some previously unpublished information.

The research described in this report is the first phase of a comprehensive program for the development of a characterization for the structural properties of rock masses. The mathematical expression of the characterization is especial' tailored for use in conjunction with modern structural analysis procedures. The objective of the first phase of the project is to determine the feasibility of representing the structural properties of rock masses in terms of the analysis of an appropriate "representative volume" the results of this investigation are described in detail in the body of the report. The current state-of-the-art concerning the understanding and description of the fundamental mechanisms of rock behavior are determined from a survey of existing literature. The development of a representative volume that captures the most important of these mechanisms is described, In order not to unduly obscure the fundamental aspects of this development, the mathematical analysis of the representative volume is limited to plane strain conditions. A subroutine for the numerical evaluation of the proposed model (i.e., the analysis of the representative volume) is presented. The steps necessary for the incorporation of the subroutine directly into existing two-dimensional finite element structural analysis programs are described. Comparisons between the predictions of the proposed characterization and published results of simple laboratory tests are presented and discussed. Finally recommendations are given concerning suggested improvements of the model and the extension of it to the general three-dimensional case.

The results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems in coal mines is reported. A review of communication methods presently used in coal mines is presented. Theoretical and-experimental results of a four pronged effort in the areas of (1) through-the-earth propagation, (2) paging system design, (3) improvement of wired telephone systems, and (4) carrier current systems are described. Auxiliary systems not included in the above are considered briefly. Various conclusions are drawn in light of practical constraints and the needs of the mining industry. The study clearly demonstrated the need for nine communications to be designed on system basis. The viability of new technology for providing reliable mine communication for improving mine safety and operating efficiency is shown.

Several investigators have obtained solutions for the concentration of stress around circular, ovaloidal, elliptical, and rectangular holes in an elastic, isotropic, semiinfinite plate subjected to uniaxial and biaxial stress. These solutions are used to evaluate the changes in stress around openings immediately under the undercut normally used in conventional block caving operations. The evaluations are based on the assumption that a horizontal undercut removes most of the vertical component of a biaxial stress field. The location and magnitude of the significant changes in stress concentration around the opening are computed. Conditions under which the assumptions used in the evaluations may or may not be consistent with conditions around block caving mines are discussed, and examples of preferred opening shapes for a biaxial (hydrostatic) stress field are shown. This report is a summary of one phase of an investigation to establish design methods for the size and shape of mine openings used in block caving mining methods .
