"Coal-water mixtures (CWM) of concentrated fine coal may be transported in pipelines but this is influenced by both CWM rheology and stability. Here, a low viscosity is required to reduce power requirements, as well as good stability for transport and storage. The objectives of this study are to investigate the importance of surface charge, solids concentration and dispersant addition on the rheology and stability of a fine Witbank coal-water mixture (<75 m). Zeta potential, rheology and stability were measured with a Malvern Zetasizer, a AR1500EA rheometer and a static rod penetration test, respectively. Sendep 30D, Sendep 30F and Norilose 8058, all supplied by Senmin International, were used as dispersants, at dosages of between 0.1 to 0.5% dry coal (w/w). Solids concentration was varied from 10 to 58% (w/w). The zeta potential was found to be positive at low pH and decreased sharply with increasing pH to a minimum of -50 mV at pH 10. The zeta potential decreased with increasing dispersant concentration for all dispersants. The lowest zeta potential of -63 mV was obtained for Norilose 8058 at a dosage of 0.3%. CWM rheology was Newtonian at lower solids concentrations but became non-Newtonian at solids concentrations over 40% (w/w), with an initial yield stress and pseudo plastic behavior. The yield stress decreased sharply with increasing dispersant concentration for all dispersants. The lowest yield stress was obtained for Norilose 8058. The addition of dispersants resulted in significant improvements in stability. A penetration ratio of over 70% was obtained for Norilose 8058 after 10 days. In summary, the addition of dispersants resulted in a decrease in the zeta potential which increased the electrostatic repulsive forces between particles, thus improving both CWM rheology and static stability.INTRODUCTION Coal Water Mixtures South Africa’s energy economy depends heavily on coal. It accounts for about 70% of primary energy consumption, 93% of electricity generation and 30% of liquid petroleum fuels (Eberhard, 2011). The transportation of coal to export markets and power generation stations is a problem in the South African coal industry due to ageing and inefficient rail infrastructure. This problem is intensified by the long distance of coal haulage, delays in the time required to load and unload wagons, and environmental challenges related to air pollution and water contamination. Fine coal may be transported more efficiently and economically in a pipeline as a highly concentrated coal water mixture (CWM). Typically a fine coal CWM will contain 60-75% coal, 25-40% water and nearly 1% of dispersing additives (Atesok et al., 2005; Dincer et al., 2003). However, the transport of CWMs in pipelines is strongly influenced by both CWM rheology and stability. Here, a low viscosity is required to reduce power requirements, as well as good stability for transport and storage. These quantities are affected by the coal composition/mineralogy, solids concentration, particle size and size distribution, particle shape, inter-particle forces and dispersant type and dosage (Laskowski, 2001)."

"The business importance of water for mining companies is unequivocal as it may affect several aspects of mining projects ranging from the life-and-death license to operate to the imperative economic viability. It is thus no wonder that nearly all mining companies acknowledge water-related risks, issues and opportunities in their respective sustainability report. Somehow, this procedure has fostered the idea that water frugality could be the sustainable solution to several water-related issues. The regular exercise of water accounting should then follow as a key strategic requirement. Water accounting is defined as the application of a consistent and structured approach to identifying, measuring, recording and reporting information about water. However, several factors discussed herein have led to the fact that some water accounts are still produced using means (hardware and software) which undermatch the value actually associated with water. The resulting fuzziness about water usage could result in missed opportunities, suboptimal operations or even lead to environmental law violations. This paper subscribes to the distinctive perspective that, once underlying concepts and practical definitions have been standardized under a supported framework, such as the openly available Water Accounting Framework (WAF) published by the Minerals Council of Australia, most of the remaining water accounting issues may be boiled down to accuracy issues and, ultimately, to how much accuracy is valued by the stakeholders. Using the latest WAF document as a baseline for best practices of water accounting and, borrowing concepts from the fields of sensor network design in the process industries and best practices of metal accounting, this paper reviews some essential accuracy issues to be considered when designing or analyzing water accounting systems in mineral processing. The current paper also includes some elements for a promising attempt to include the value of information paradigm inside the water accounting best practices."

The surface oxidation of sulfide minerals in aqueous solutions is an important sub-process in sulfide flotation and hydrometallurgy, but a full understanding of the oxidation process and products is still lacking. Many oxidation pathways and products involving elemental sulfur, metal polysulfide, metal-deficient sulfide and sulfate have been proposed, confirmed and argued. In this paper we provide further insight into the surface electrochemical behaviour of galena in aqueous solutions. For this research we have developed a novel experimental system, that combines chronoamperometry and AC-mode AFM surface imaging, which allows for in-situ, synchronized electrochemical control and examination of oxidative surface morphology. At pH4, the morphology of elemental sulfur (detected by ex-situ Cryo-XPS) formed on the oxidizing galena surface depends on the electrochemical potential pathway. In multi-step chronoamperometry (i.e. four potential steps from 0 mV to + 350 mV) the sulfur forms as nanoscopic domains, whereas in single-step chronoamperometry (i.e. one potential step from 0 mV to + 350 mV) sulfur forms as a heterogeneous layer. In each case the oxidation is controlled so that the number of electrons (coulombs) passed per unit area is the same, therefore the amount of sulfur produced is also the same. The differences in morphology with electrochemical potential pathway are explained using a nucleation and growth model. The formation of sulfur on the surface increased both advancing and receding contact angle of galena, but the morphological changes induced by different electrochemical potential pathways did not significantly alter the hydrophobicity of the surface. Different hydro-metallurgical processes have been studied in order to recover manganese(II) from oxidised minerals such as MnO2. An innovative acid reductive leaching carried out in mild experimental conditions was here considered using agricultural and industrial wastes containing carbohydrates as reducing agents. The leaching process was investigated from a kinetic and equilibrium point of view in order to optimise the experimental conditions, develop a kinetic model and obtain high purity concentrated MnSO4 solutions. To study the leaching kinetic a Shrinking Core Model (SCM) was modified by a variable activation energy term to take into account both the variable reagent concentrations and the reaction rate change with respect to the manganese dioxide conversion. The influence of the particle size in the kinetic model is discussed with the support of SEM analysis before and after leaching. Manganese extraction yield was maximised (170-190 g/L) using appropriate carbohydrates and acid excesses, while impurity concentrations were kept low (Fe<10ppm and Ca<300ppm) pre-treating the ores, using hydro-alcoholic leaching medium and different combinations of down-stream processes. In particular precipitation, solvent extraction and adsorption onto active carbon were tested to eliminate Fe and Ca from MnSO4 solutions.

LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating iron ore mines, concentration plants and pelletizing plants in Northern Sweden. Geometallurgy, which combines geological and metallurgical information is not a new way of thinking at LKAB, but rather a revised and updated version of an old working process. A project called "Silica in the Mine" which started in 2007, was an important reason to set a new focus at the geometallurgy. The target of the project was to develop a simplified method in laboratory scale to predict SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate in Kiruna and further predict the physical properties of the crude ore with respect to processing characteristics. The connection between mineralogy and products properties have started to be even more vital and necessary to examine due to the future exploiting new iron ore deposits. Geometallurgy at LKAB can be described as a mental and strategic framework where the Research and Development department (R&D), and others within the organization of LKAB, aims towards the connection of the minerals-production-products. It could in its basics be called "research & development", but it must be clarified that changes have been made, mainly due to the development on the instrumental analysis side. LKAB’s idea is to work quite broad, with internal educations, an active working process in ongoing projects, together with external parties (such as universities), with several PhD-projects and an upgrading on the instrumental side at the LKAB Research & Development department. This paper is a summary about the concept Geometallurgy at LKAB and some of the actions within its framework.

The detailed researches of a broad circle of problems connected to development of the electric pulse method destruction materials (EPD) of a various nature and area of use are executed. The electrical and power characteristics of process, physical fundamentals of selectivity of a breakdown and destruction are investigated, the device of electric pulse (EP) disaggregation and ?omminution of materials are developed, the technological efficiency of disintegration of industrial minerals estimated. Due to its technological advantages, the EPD could have a great potential in minerals mining and processing technologies. Low specific power and weight-and-size characteristics of EP installations based on the existing out-of-date electric equipment are at present the main reasons hindering the effective application of the method in mining and processing technologies. The main studies carried out in Russia in the field of electro technical equipment development for EP technology are presented. The pulse capacitors service life affects greatly the economic efficiency of the process because the capacitors cost accounts for a considerable, and in some cases, the most part of the operational costs. Determined and analyzed in the study are the ways which could significantly improve the specific characteristics of high voltage pulse generators (VPG), such as to use of high-frequency voltage transformation to develop a charger; to use pulse transformers (PT) with iron magnetic circuits made of materials characterized by high magnetic permeability, in pulse generating circuits; as well as to use special ways which could produce voltage pulses with a short front. The experiments have proved the possibility to adapt these technological solutions for EP devices, and a further strategy of the EP technologies development and application has been suggested on this base.
