B206 is a recently-developed high-strength Al-Cu casting alloy with reduced Ti and Fe, as compared to the well-known AA 206 alloy, for improved hot tearing resistance. In the current study, the solidification kinetics of this alloy as a function of cooling rate from 1 to 15 K/min were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and microscopy. Specifically, the evolution in fraction solid, grain size, and secondary dendrite arm spacing have been characterized. The DSC results show the occurrence of three peaks during cooling from the liquid state, which are related to the formation of primary aluminum, a pre-eutectic intermetallic, and the eutectic phases. Thermal analysis also indicates that while the liquidus temperature is not sensitive to the cooling rate, the temperatures at which the pre-eutectic and eutectic phases form are strongly coupled to the rate of heat extraction. A decrease in the latter temperatures was observed when the rate of solidification was increased, leading to a lengthening of the freezing range of the primary phase. The results will be useful for improving B206 casting processes, specifically through modification of mould cooling conditions.

"Reductive leaching of cobalt (III) from a heterogenite bearing ore has been performed. Pyrite was added to the system and simultaneously bioleached in order to provide ferrous iron as reducing agent. Within such arrangement the iron ions are continuously re-circulated inside a Fe 3+ / Fe 2+ loop. As a result Co(III) is solubilized in the presence of Fe 2+ ions in concentrations well below the stoichiometric requirement. The ore has been initially subjected to acid pre-leaching in order to guarantee that the available Co (II) has been entirely removed. Two technological parameters have been studied to show influence on the degree of cobalt leaching: concentration of ferric iron in the inoculum and the presence of bacteria. The bacterial role could be mainly viewed in supplying ferric ions in the system which chemically react with the pyrite to generate ferrous ions used as Co(III) reducing agent. Co(III) dissolution has been less efficient when the concentration of total iron in the system was low, but also when microorganisms were absent. SEM observations on leached heterogenite have evidenced bacterial attack on the mineral; however the precise role of bacterial presence on cobalt (III) leaching is still to be elucidated.INTRODUCTIONCobalt accompanies quite often copper in secondary oxidized ore deposits (Rumbu, 2013). In such associations cobalt is found both as CoII+ as well as CoIII+ (Deliens, 1974). In contrast to cobalt (III), cobalt (II) is leached relatively easy in sulphuric acid solutions. Cobalt (III) when present in mineral form belongs to the heterogenite mineral group with a simplified chemical formulae Co2O3.H2O or CoOOH. An open-pit mining operation can be viewed as a process by which the open surface of a mine is continuously deformed. The planning of a mining program involves the design of the final shape of this open surface. The approach developed in this paper is based on the following assumptions: 1. the type of material its mine value and its extraction cost is given for each point; 2. restrictions on the geometry of the pit are specified (surface boundaries and maximum allowable wall slopes); 3. The objective is to maximize total profit-total mine value of material extracted minus total extraction cost. Two numeric methods are proposed: A simple dynamic programming algorithm for the two-dimensional pit (or a single vertical section of a mine), and. a more elaborate graph algorithm for the general three-dimensional pit. Mine backfill has been widely used as a means of ground support. While proper design of backfill is important to ensure ground stability, understanding the failure mechanism and the various influencing factors in a filled block is essential. This paper presents a modified sliding failure model of a confined backfill block. The model considers both the gravity load of the backfill itself and the overlying load from fragmented ore or backfill on the top. A series of new equations were derived and the relationships between factors such as factor of safety, friction angle, cohesion and the exposed stope height were developed. This modified model will be a very useful tool in backfill design, for example, to optimize the design of backfill for a given stope geometry or to determine the maximum backfill height for a particular type of backfill.

Dissolution characteristics of metals vary significantly when they form alloys with other elements. Because hydrometallurgical processes are essential in separation and refining of non-ferrous metals, it is important to study behaviors of alloys in aqueous solutions. The authors have studied dissolution characteristics of precious metals in acid solutions using electrochemical measurement. When precious metals are alloyed with Zn, its dissolution is promoted by an increase in surface area caused by the preferential dissolution of this metal. The electrochemical study also revealed that precious metals dissolved from some alloys at unusually negative potentials; the underpotential dissolutions are explained by activations of these metals in the dealloying.

It is common to see the Canadian tax system being fingered as one of the causes in this shift in direction. However, if one takes the time to peel away the surface of our tax system, and to probe a little deeper into its substance, it will be found that the Canadian taxation of mining is generally quite competitive. IntroductionCross-border shopping in the mining industry? - Absolutely! Economics 100 teaches that dollars are votes in the capitalist system, and mining companies are going to cast their limited number of votes where they can achieve the highest return at the least risk. The Canadian consumer knows that taxes are a major factor in cross-border shopping, and mining company executives know that the same tenet holds true in their industry. Unfortunately, mining operations are subject to such a bewildering array of tax rules that making an intelligent decision is not always an easy matter.Statutory Tax RatesConsider, for example, the ""statutory"" tax rates shown in Table 1. (Statutory tax rate in this table refers to the simple sum of federal and provincial tax rates on profits as specified in the tax legislation.) Looking only at the total statutory tax rates (such as 66070 for Manitoba) , one might quickly observe that the Canadian mining industry is subject to a truly onerous tax regime, especially as compared to the United States where statutory tax rates can be in the 34% range."

When the next set of proposals for lax reform is released later this year as promised by Finance, the mining industry had better be prepared 10 take a hard look.IntroductionTwo federal budgets ago, in May 1985, Finance Minister Wilson tabled budget papers that were more massive in terms of volume than most federal budgets. Buried in this mass of documentation is a discussion paper entitled ""The Corporate Income Tax System-A Direction For Change"". When the discussion paper was tabled over one year ago, reaction from the business sector was almost nonexistent. By and large, the paper was regarded as nothing more than one more federal publication of mild academic interest.But, recent events suggest that this discussion paper for corporate tax reform could be the cornerstone for a series of changes to the tax laws which would have more profound and widespread effects for all sectors of the economy than any reform since 1971 . No industry in Canada can afford to ignore the movement afoot in Ottawa for corporate tax reform."

Thorium is frequently the main radioactive element in rare earth ores and is a resource that can potentially substitute for uranium. Thorium must be separated from rare earths in order to obtain products with low radioactivity. There are abundant resources of thorium in the rare earth ores in China, especially in Baiyunebo mixed ores. As an associated element coexisting in rare earth ores, thorium is, or can be, separated from rare earth concentrate, iron concentrate, as well as from waste water and slag to achieve recovery of thorium. The methods of separation include ion exchange resin, liquid-liquid extraction, and liquid-solid extraction. TBP extraction has been the main method applied to separate thorium by domestic and foreign scholars. This paper presents a comparison of different processes for the separation of thorium from rare earth ores, especially Baiyunebo mixed ores, single bastnaesite and monazite ore, and provides suggestions for the future recovery of thorium resources.

In New Brunswick, significant potash deposits are intimately associated with rocks of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group. To date, two deposits high in sylvinite, up to 20 m thick, have been confirmed at depths between 490 and 1,035 m below surface near Plumweseep and Salt Springs. These areas are currently under development by the Potash Company of America and the Denison-Potacan Potash Company respectively. A third area, near Lower Millstream, is also known to contain potash-bearing evaporites and is now being explored by BP Exploration Canada Ltd. All three areas are situated in the western half of the Moncion Subbasin and are within 25 km of Sussex. Numerous similarities in stratigraphy, thickness, mineralogy and structure suggest that deposition of evaporites throughout much of southern New Brunswick was contemporaneous and extended over a considerable area. Le Camp Minier de Matagami est situé dans la ceinture volcano-sédimentaire Harricana- Turgeon appartenant à la Province du Supérieur, sous-province de l?Abitibi, au Québec. Les gisements de métaux de base polymétalliques sont retrouvés exclusivement dans les deux domaines lithotectoniques comprenant l?association basalte-rhyolite (Matagami-Brouillan et Joutel-Raymond). Tous ces dépôts, à l?exception de ceux de Selbaie, sont de type exhalatif et représentent des dépôts volcanogènes à Zn-Cu, typiques de l?Archéen. Le complexe volcanique de Matagami est constitué principalement de deux phases de volcanisme tholéïtique. Les dacites et les rhyolites du Groupe de Watson, représentent la phase la plus précoce et celles-cis sont recouvertes par la seconde phase qui est constituée majoritairement de roches intermédiares à mafiques intercalées d?horizons felsiques, formant le Groupe de Wabassee. Un sédiment chimique sulfuré, la Tuffite Clef, marque le contact et l?hiatus entre ces deux groupes. Cette tuffite est reconnue à la grandeur du flanc sud du camp minier et représente l?horizon favorable à explorer puisque sa déposition a correwspond à une période d?intense activité hydrothermale. Le complexe volcanique de Matagami est limité au nord et au sud par des bandes sédimentaires orientées est-ouest, connues respectivement sous les noms de Groupe de Matagami et Groupe de Taïbi. Le Complexe intrusif de la Rivière Bell, qui occupe la base du Groupe de Watson, est un complexe lité consistant en une séquence stratifiée gabbroïque avec localement des niveaux stratiformes à concentrations d?oxydes magmatiques, la bordure de ce complexe est marquée par la présence d?un horizon granophyrique. Cette intrusion synvolcanique prétectonique, représente probablement la source de chaleur étant à l?origine de l?activité hydrothermale observée dans les roches volcaniques sus-jacentes. Suite à un levé aéroporté, le camp minier de Matagami a vu le jour en 1956 lors de la découverte du dépôt de Mattagami Lake, un gisement volcanogène de 25.6 millions de tonnes. Depuis ce temps, un total de neuf gisements ont été exploités et un dixième, Bell Allard, est présentement en production. En date du 31 décembre 1999, la production historique du camp s?élevait à plus de 41 millions de tonnes. Cette présentation mettra l?accent sur la géologie des récentes découvertes dans le prolifique camp minier de Matagami. Les ressources publiées pour le dépôt Persévérance sont de 947,000 tonnes titrant 19.12% Zn, 1.37% Cu, 32 g/t Ag et 0.40 g/t Au. Deux autres découvertes, Équinoxe et Persévérance Ouest contibueront à la ressource globale. Les trois dépôts sont situés au niveau de la Tuffite Clef même si les roches sus-jacentes ne sont pas celles typiquement observées dans les autres dépôts du flanc sud. Ces découvertes sont le résultat d?un programme d?exploration ciblé et soutenu, démontrant ainsi la possibilité de découvrir de nouvelles ressources même dans les camps miniers comme Matagami qui ont été explorés intensivement depuis plus d?un demi-siècle.

Mineral resources estimation comprises basically two stages: (i) data collection, analysis and validation, and (ii) the estimate of the grades and tones of the deposit. The most applied method for sampling survey in mineral exploration is rotary drilling with total core recovery. High drilling costs make borehole geophysical logging attractive to obtain the maximum possible information from each borehole helping to understand ore intersections, grades variability, limits of the deposits and continuity of the mineralization. In this paper, borehole geophysical logging was used to enhance the sampling survey and to derive grades indirectly (without lab analysis) with a certain amount of uncertainty. Indicator kriging (IK) was the estimation method used, as it is adequate to incorporate the uncertainty associated with the geophysical derived grade values. The results were compared to the conventional procedures using grades determined via core analysis and ordinary kriging. Borehole geophysical logging proved to be efficient to define the essential features of ore deposit and IK provided results with acceptable precision and accuracy if compared to the model provided by ordinary kriging.

The Huantajalla mine is seated on Uchucchacua 's Mixing District that is the fourth producer of Silver in the world. Huantajalla Mine is a new mine that nowadays is being explored and recently it has began to operate. The project for 4-A vein exploitation in Huantajalla Mine using Longhole drillings as a new method of mixing is developed by Planning Department of Uchucchacua Mine in coordination with Geology Department of this mine, started in June 2004. This project is funded by Company of Mines Buenaventura S.A.A In July 2002, Geology Department started the exploration on the area of Huantajalla Mine, discovering the 4-A vein. The reconnaissance and definition of the vein finished June 2003, finding 79,080 Ton of mineral of Silver with a grade of 40.0 Oz Ag/ton and a thickness of 1.85 meters (6 feet ). Using the longhole method on the vein exploitation will replace the cut and fill and shrinkage methods, and it will keep a dilution of 15%.

This paper describes how to make advanced control choices when difficult processes need improvement. The decision-making process involves choosing between a rules-based approach and a model-based approach as well as weighing benefits and drawbacks, complexity and simplicity, investment and results. This paper will present briefly each solution: basic control, advanced regulatory control, model predictive control and expert systems such as fuzzy logic controllers and neural networks. Three examples are presented: ARC (Advanced Regulatory Control) on pH in a comminution circuit, MPC (Model Predictive Control) for combustible management and FLC (Fuzzy Logic Control) on a Semi Autogenous Mill. The article then proposes a decision tree for selecting the most appropriate approach. A table will compare usage, development, commissioning, maintenance and lifecycle costs for each approach. Finally, conclusions and suggestions will summarize the methodology.

The present industry-education relationship in addressing the situation is examined and some thoughts are expressed on how these may be built on, in order to help solve the problem of attracting people to this critical area.IntroductionAs a long-time proponent of plant engineering and maintenance as a management function, I would like to review the progress made by the industry/ educational approaches in satisfying the needs in that area. In doing so, I would like to make the following points:1) that there has been an accelerating shortfall of mechanical-electrical people relative to the needs of the industry;2) that the condition will probably get worse before it gets better; ,3) that the past industry I educational approaches to alleviate the problem have met with limited success; and finally4) I would like to review some of the things being done and consider how these efforts might be extended."

In the Ontario Division, it operates 13 mines, 5 mills, a smelter, an iron ore plant and 3 refineries, all engaged in the mining and recovery of nickel and copper. This paper describes the slurry pumping practices in the mills of the Ontario Division.The PumpsWe have in our Sudbury area mills most of the available types of slurry pumps, in sizes from one inch up to twelve inches, a total of about 400 pumps. The rubber-lined, horizontal shaft pump is; most numerous. However, for certain applications, the hard-metal pump is essential, and is becoming more popular for general mill service. Two types of vertical shaft pumps are used. There are a few diaphragm pumps on small thickeners, but the larger thickeners have centrifugal pumps either directly connected to the under-flow or with one pump handling several gravity underflows. We have not used piston or plunger pumps in our mills."

"INTRODUCTION Over the past decade, a number of publications have described the advances in High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation. A number of significant, but small capacity installations were made and are successfully operating. These were followed some three years ago by larger installations treating ilmenite gravity concentrates; at least one machine treating 25 tons per hour of new feed was installed and is successfully operating.However, this still did not result in general acceptance that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation could be applied on a large scale. Neither did it dispel the feeling that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation was ""expensive"" and hence, confined to small scale – high value applications suchas the cleaning of tin concentrates. In addition, there is the usual reluctance of being the ""guinea pig"" which has resulted in waiting to see ""someone else"" make the first large installation decision. Such a decision and installation has now been made.Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to show that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation has been commercially accepted on a large scale and to show its general application to the base metal mineral industry.Examples are confined to a few specifics due to the large volume of preliminary test data that is available. The art has now reached the stage where much of the preliminary work should be taken through to serious evaluation."

"Ore reserves at Brunswick Mining and Smelting totalled 101(106) tonnes grading 97 grams tonne-1 silver at the end of 1981. Silver is recovered as a byproduct in the copper, lead and bulk concentrates and is lost to the zinc concentrate and plant tailings. Recovery of silver for the year 1981 was 58,5%. The loss of potential revenue is in excess of Cdn $50(106) year-1 at current silver prices and milling rates.Silver is known to occur in solid solution in galena and as tetrshedrite. Evidence indicating the identity and significance of a third silverbearing mineral assemblage is reviewed and the distribution of silver losses is detailed. Characteristics of each the carrier which may be responsible for observed distribution, including size, surface quality, liberation and composition are considered, and the third carrier is shown to have possible implications for improved silver recovery by other Canadian producers as well as by Brunswick Mining.Silver tetrahedrite tailings distributed tailings and losses occur as coarse, free and as very fine unliberated galena in losses of the third carrier are between the zinc concentrate and are concentrated in the finest size fractions. Process alternatives for enhanced silver recovery by physical and chemical means are reviewed."
