This paper presents a three-tier web-based GIS application that uses Java Server Page (JSP), Java Servlet and relational database to manage performance monitoring and reporting in the oil sands mining industry. It is a real-time Earth Structure Performance Monitoring System (ESPMS), which allows the user to record and store instrumentation monitoring readings as well as technical observations and instrumentation installation documentations into a complete relational database. The ESPMS introduces the advantages of precise field record keeping, due diligence, security, consistency and completeness while at the same time simplifying the task of reporting. ESPMS combines web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping and data management to facilitate the collection, organization, retrieval, reporting and communication of the vast amounts of monitoring data related to mining and tailings engineering associated with site investigation and construction information. ESPMS utilizes web-based GIS technology to incorporate referenced aerial photographs, Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) maps or AutoCAD drawings as a base map for the monitoring site. It dynamically creates and administers all instrumentation monitoring locations and reading frequencies. It enables the user to collect and manage the data associated with an unlimited number of reading events. It provides the designer with real-time monitoring data (what, why, when, how), thereby allowing them to make early adjustments to design protocols or procedures, or to take remedial action(s) regarding the subject earth structure under construction or after completion. It provides more cost-effective reporting and data sharing through the Internet. It improves security on data entry and eliminates unauthorized data changes. It allows better integration of graphics and illustrations with numerical data files. It is capable of managing the continually expanding workload resulting from new and larger structures in the oil sands or other mineral mining industries. The ESPMS facilitates easier data gathering for preparation of as-built and after-built or regulatory reports, etc. It enables quick location of the interested instruments and summarization of the performance of the instruments. It enables one to visualize performance data and QA/QC construction test results spatially on any given cross-section. Data can be exported to MS Excel for detailed analysis and to evaluate the stability of the earth structures.

"A correlation has been established between the oxygen demand of Brunswick Mining and Smelting ore and flotation results at the bench, pilot plant and operating plant scale. A method of dete""1llining the aeration requirement of sulphide ores on the basis of this correlation is presented. It is shown that abraded iron from grinding media plays an important role in aeration and flotation. Laboratory grinding must therefore be conducted under controlled conditions with suitable grinding media in order to obtain the true aeration requirement of the ore.A method of evaluating aerator efficiency, also based on oxygen demand measurements, has been used successfully at Brunswick Mining to design pilot plant and full-scale aeration systems.1. IntroductionPre-flotation aeration of sulphide pulps has been practiced in the Noranda Group for many years to help in the depression of pyrite and pyrrhotite and to promote chalcopyrite and/or galena. Recently, two out of three parallel circuits at the Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corp. Ltd. concentrator have been converted on a test basis to a new flowsheet incorporating aeration as a basic step. Among other benefits, a substantial decrease in the middlings load has been achieved as a result of improved pyrite rejection. There has been increasing interest in other organizations in the potential advantages to be derived from' aeration in terms of improved metallurgy and/or decreased reagent consumption."

"Corrosion is an electrochemical process that causes degradation and deterioration of various steel works (pipelines, drains, cisterns) whether they are buried, immersed, or not. Worldwide, we estimate that corrosion destroys a quarter of the annual production of steel at a rate of 5 tons per second. Several techniques are used to protect against corrosion. Among these processes, Cathodic protection, which is regarded as the best technique to assure the protection of steel, works against this phenomenon. This is achieved either by a system of reactive anodes, or by the technique of impressed current protection or other techniques. Before any installation of cathodic protection, a preliminary study and pre-evaluation of certain parameters must be made. In the present work, we will present an example of dimensioning of an installation of cathodic protection by imposed current of a pipeline using solar energy, where we discuss the following items:•,Evolutions of the potential as well as current along the pipeline and their respective expressions deduced from the laws known as telegraphists;•,Range of protection (potential of protection along the pipeline);•,Influence of the isolation resistance of the coating on the range of protection;•,Effect of the aging of the coating and its influence on the current of protection."

"All attempts to remove significant amounts of arsenic from enargite via neutral or reductive pyro routes have required operating temperatures between 600 and 700 º C, too high to propose an equipment development program. Operating at reduced pressures, or using hydrogen or elemental sulphur as a sweeping gas did not help to lower these temperatures. Admixing iron powder gave excellent results, but still required 700 º C. By fortuity, in recent experiments to produce tennantite from an enargite mineral sample, it was observed that enargite was completely converted to bornite, chalcopyrite with minor residual tennantite within an hour at 400-450 ºC. This is believed to be due to the presence of pyrite in the mineral sample treated. All earlier decomposition work appears to have been done on predominantly enargite (i.e. low pyrite) samples, or at high operating temperatures, ignoring possible reactions at lower temperature. The decomposition of enargite into iron substituted tennantite plus some bornite under evolution of liquid elemental sulphur, followed by further decomposition of this tennantite into bornite and volatile arsenic sulphides, appears experimentally feasible at these low temperatures and mimics described ore genesis pathways at > 250 ºC in saline solutions. Numerous research studies have shown that clay rock formations exhibit favourable characteristics for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. However, one main concern is that the favourable long-term isolation properties of the intact rock mass could be negatively affected by the formation of an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) around the underground openings. The goal of this paper is to present new rock mechanics insights into the phenomena involved in the EDZ formation and evolution processes in Opalinus Clay, a clay shale currently being assessed as a potential host rock for an underground repository in Northern Switzerland. More specifically, discontinuum-based computer simulations, using a hybrid finite-discrete element method (FDEM) approach, were applied to two case studies considering circular excavations in an anisotropic Opalinus Clay formation. In the first case study, numerical modelling was applied to the HG-A experiment, a long-term in-situ test carried out at the Mont Terri underground rock laboratory to investigate the hydro-mechanical response of a backfilled and sealed microtunnel. A mechanistic analysis of the fracturing processes involved in the EDZ formation was carried out. In the second case study, the long-term effect of the bentonite backfill swelling on the EDZ around an emplacement was numerically analyzed. Overall, the simulation results highlight short-term distinctive rock failure kinematics due to the bedded rock structure, as well as a long-term reduction of the excavation-induced fracture porosity in response to mechanical loading.

Hydrometallurgical equipment used to extract and refine copper and other metals is exposed to extremely corrosive chemical environments. These systems must be fabricated from materials that are durable against corrosion, meet exacting mechanical requirements, and perform economically over the life of the mineral processing plant. In several recent large hydromet projects, fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) has been shown to provide equal if not superior durability relative to alternative materials of construction. This paper will compare corrosion performance and cost of plant equipment fabricated with corrosion resistant alloys, rubber lined steel, and FRP made with Epoxy Vinyl Ester thermoset resins. Case histories for FRP piping, storage tanks, extraction vessels, and electrowinning cells combined with laboratory-based corrosion studies will be reviewed to demonstrate how FRP materials are selected for hydrometallurgical equipment. Specific examples from projects such as El Boleo, Long Harbour and others will be used to demonstrate how the versatility of FRP allows for remote fabrication of durable corrosion-resistant large-scale equipment for hydrometallurgical refinement of copper and other metals. INTRODUCTION Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) began to emerge as a material of construction for corrosion service in many industrial processes in the late 1950s because of its ease of use and overall performance. Corrosion resistant (CR) FRP, as an alternative construction material to alloys, rubber and tile linings, grew steadily in following decades. The aggressive operating conditions associated with hydrometallurgical processes typically require materials of construction that can withstand acids and acid chlorides at temperatures up to 90°C, sometimes higher. Common metallic materials of construction, such as carbon steel, are not compatible with these conditions. High nickel alloys are capable of meeting performance requirements, but often at a high cost. In many cases FRP mining equipment based on epoxy vinyl ester resin (EVER) offers durability, long service life and lower maintenance costs. Through demonstrated performance and decades of case histories, more and more design engineers are confidently specifying FRP as the material of construction for new mineral processing equipment.

It has been developed by TransAlta Utilities Corporation as a captive mine to supply fuel to two genera ting power plant s. The mine is owned by TransAlta and operated under contract by Manalta Coal. Within the mine permit area, TransAlta own s the right to mine 80% of the recoverable surface mineable coal.The planning process starts with the annually produced 25-year energy forecast which is provided by the Electric Utility Planning Council (EUPC). A 1983 forecast predicts an average annual increase in energy requirements of 4% over the next 25 years. Put another way, the requirement will double before the end of the century. A lar ge part of the base load generation of the Province of Alberta is provided by th e plants fueled from Highvale Mine. The Highvale Mine is therefore expected to maintain a high output over a long period of time.Mine PlanningMine planning is an ongoing, interative process that draws from many sources. All levels of planning draw from the same sources but du e to the different processes and objectives of each planning class, the degree of influence may differ. The planner becomes then a coordinator bringing together data and excerpts from several disciplines in groups. "At Smoky River Coal Limited (SRCL), economic occurrences of structurally thickened coal deposits form attractive surface mining targets. These steeply dipping, structurally complex deposits require that special attention be given to pit wall design and operational practices.Where anchor support is feasible, there is potential for reducing footwall waste requirements and/or increasing coal recovery. SRCL has used rock anchors to support footwall slopes since 1985. This paper outlines design considerations and performance of rock anchor support systems at SRCL.Three case histories are included that illustrate the design process for supporting steeply dipping footwall slopes using rock anchors.IntroductionWestern Canada contains vast reserves of high grade coking coal largely located in two belts within the Rocky Mountain Foothills straddling the Alberta/British Columbia border. There are about one billion tonnes of ""clean"" coking coal reserves (Romaniuk and Naidu, 1986) situated near existing mining infrastructure. Within the reserve areas shown in Figure I, a total of six producers operate 10 large mines linked with ports situated on Canada's west coast. Al! of the producers operate conventional shovel/truck surface pits.Surface mineable reserves within some of the mountain coal mines are located on dip slopes or where the geologic structure has thickened the coal near the surface, creating low strip ratio targets. Footwall slopes in these mines are developed parallel to bedding, thus minimizing waste extraction and preventing undercutting of potentially unstable strata. The base of the mineable coal measures in both north and south regions is marked by massive quartz sandstone units (Torrens Member and Moose Mountain Member) which often form the footwall. Footwalls developed within this basal sandstone unit can attain very high unbenched heights often with little risk of instability. In cases where the footwall is developed on weaker strata above this basal unit, stability considerations control slope height when bedding dips exceed about 30°. In these situations it is desirable to assess the benefits of artificial support to increase the unbenched footwall slope height."

The argillaceous formation known as the Opalinus Clay is host to the Mont Terri Underground Research Laboratory. The URL was developed to investigate the hydrogeological, geochemical and geotechnical properties of the formation. Underground excavations at the site are characterized by non-elastic and time-dependent deformations. Excavations trending perpendicular to the strike of the bedding presented relatively minor deformations, however, tunnels parallel to the strike of the bedding showed much larger non-elastic deformations. This paper presents an analysis of the measured response of a tunnel trending parallel to the strike of the bedding in Opalinus Clay. The measured convergence is compared to tunnel experience in weak rocks to assess the tunnel stability.

Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. has developed a novel hydrometallurgical process for producing not only copper metal but also iron metal from copper concentrates. Because copper concentrates generally contains the same amount of iron as copper, cost-effective rejection of the iron is a key issue for the development of the process. Conventional hydrometallurgical processes produce a large volume of goethite or hematite for disposal and the residues are not environmentally friendly. In the novel Sumitomo hydrometallurgical process, copper is leached effectively from chalcopyrite concentrates using chlorine gas, followed by purification through solvent extraction and electrowinning for copper and iron recovery. This process has many advantages such as the minimization of the volume of solid waste by the recovery of metallic iron and the production of high purity copper. Iron metal with a purity of more than 98% can be recovered from the purified raffinate. This paper presents the results of the batch and continuous tests of the process flowsheet.

Run-off and waste water streams high in dissolved metal content are generated in all mining operations. The metals pose a threat to life due to their persistent bio-accumulative toxic (PBT) characteristics. Hence, there is a need to treat mine waste water effectively. Lime precipitation is the technology of choice through which Fe, as the major metal species, is removed as Fe (III) oxyhydroxides with other metals co-precipitated and/or adsorbed. Sulphates are removed as gypsum or incorporated into the Fe phases. The resulting sludge has poor dewatering characteristics and is deposited in landfills, with an inherent risk of returning the Fe back into the water cycle through leaching. This study seeks to understand the mechanisms behind the formation of this sludge in terms of product quality. The relationship between process conditions and product characteristics has been investigated through exploring the effect of Fe (III) concentration on the precipitate product characteristics (particle size distribution (PSD), size, morphology and structure) and quality (in terms of filterability, settling ability, etc.) in a simplified system. Neutralisation of acidic synthetic aqueous Fe (III) sulphate streams containing 50, 400 and 800 mg/L Fe(III), respectively, was effected by mixing it in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with dissolved calcium hydroxide for pH control at a residence time of 15 minutes. Precipitate samples analysed for morphology and PSD, using nanoSEM and Zetasizer respectively, showed a general decrease in PSD and zeta potential with increases in feed Fe (III) concentration. These results were used to infer the particle size enlargement mechanisms of Fe (III) oxyhydroxide precipitates under a given set of operating conditions. Preliminary product quality results indicate that a high concentration (800 mg/L) leads to the rapid formation of metastable precursors with poor product quality, whilst a low concentration (50 mg/L) leads to formation of thermodynamically more stable precipitates with good product quality. The approach demonstrates a potential route forward in terms of linking operating conditions to the attainment of desirable characteristics rather than specific precipitate phases which are difficult to identify.

"In September 1993, the flash furnace at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, KNS, was brought off line after almost 12 years of operation. This is a record campaign life for a flash furnace. The furnace was' totally rebuilt and the capacity of the plant increased from 540 000 tpo to 750 000 tpa of concentrate throughput. The throughput increase was' achieved through the construction of a 525 t/day oxygen plant and upgrading of various plant ancillaries. A number of significant design modifications were also built into the flash furnace and oxygen enrichment was implemented in the operation of the Peirce-Smith converters.This paper discusses the rebuilding of the flash furnace and design modifications made to furnace equipment and ancillary plant. Some preliminary post-startup operating data are presented.IntroductionIn September 1993, Campaign 6 of the flash furnace was concluded and the furnace brought off line for rebuilding. The campaign length was almost 12 years and set a new record for campaign length. Planning for the rebuild took place over the last five years of the campaign. A number of modifications to the design of the furnace and the ancillary plant were planned to coincide with the furnace rebuild. The furnace was rebuilt and recommissioned in 70 days. The increased plant capacity of 750000 tpa has been achieved by the construction of a 525 t/day oxygen plant and modifications made to ancillary plant which centred around increased p~ control, efficiency and hygiene. This paper examines the development and implementation of the modifications made to the furnace and ancillary plant. Preliminary post-shutdown performance data are presented."

"Alanx ceramic/metal composites are proprietary products developed by Lanxide Corporation who joined with Alcan to form Alanx Products L.P. in 1988. Alanx ceramic/metal composites are composed of silicon carbide in a combined alumina and metallic aluminum matrix. In laboratory slurry wear tests conducted by Alanx ceramic/metal composites have shown to perform well against other wear resistant materials. At the Kidd Creek Concentrator Alanx CG896 ceramic/metal composite was tested in two pumping applications, the primary cyclone feed pumps and the filter feed pumps. In both instances the wear rates of the parts made of Alanx CG896 were far less than the gum rubber parts traditionally used. As of year to date September 1992 the unit cost to repair primary cyclone pump parts has dropped 58% from 1991 figures. For the filter feed pumps the unit cost to maintain the pumps has dropped by 33% as compared to 1990 figures. The total savings represented by implementation of Alanx wear parts, based on projected year end unit costs for 1992, as compared to 1991 costs for primary cyclone feed pumps and 1990 figures for filter feed pumps, is $166,753. INTRODUCTIONAt the Kidd Creek Concentrator the cost to maintain the primary cyclone feed pumps and the filter feed pumps was a constant concern. Rubber wear part consumption was quite high and the manpower required was considerable. For 1991 the total cost to maintain five primary cyclone pumps was $244,062. The cost to maintain the filter feed pumps in 1990 was $72,076. A wear material was needed that would increase the time between repairs and that would increase the reliability of these pumps between scheduled shut downs."

"Mineral floatability is a function of mineral properties such as size, liberation, shape, surface composition, reagent coverage on the surface, level of oxidation on the surface, etc.; pulp chemistry: Eh, pH, temperature, DO, reagent type, etc. and hydrodynamic conditions: turbulence, gas dispersion, D32, etc. The biggest challenge with predicting the floatability of an ore is finding a measurement method that would take into account the effect of all of the variables on the floatability of the minerals. The particle-bubble attachment time measurement is considered as an alternative way to predict the floatability of minerals instead of using expensive and time consuming flotation tests because it takes into considerations both surface chemistry and hydrodynamic parameters present in the froth flotation. The existing particle-bubble attachment time method is suitable for studying some significant flotation variables such as pH, temperature, particle size, reagent type and concentration. Nevertheless, measuring the attachment time as a function of collector coverage or surface oxidation is much more challenging. This paper introduces a new induction timer designed to measure the effect of galvanic interaction on the attachment time of particles. The new setup employs an array of needles to create 6 bubbles with the average size of 2.1 mm. Imaging system is used to set the initial distance between the particle bed and the array of bubbles. The attached particles are collected and sent for further analysis. One of the main benefits of the new experimental setup is that the attached particles can be physically separated from the unattached particles therefore many of the particle properties can be analysed and evaluated.INTRODUCTIONSchumann (1942), and Tomlinson and Fleming (1963) proposed that the flotation rate constant is dependent on four probabilities: particle-bubble collision (PC), particle-bubble attachment (PA), particlebubble aggregate stability in turbulent environment (PE), and particle-bubble aggregate stability in froth phase (PF). Any change in any of these probabilities will affect the overall flotation rate constant. All of the above-introduced probabilities are influenced by stream- variables and mechanical variables but their extent of influence vary. The stream variables are particle properties that have been shown to affect flotation rate constant such as size, shape, liberation, mineralogical composition, reagent surface coverage, surface oxidation, etc. The mechanical variables are the direct and indirect properties of the flotation unit affecting flotation rate constant such as cell and impeller geometry, air rate, impeller speed, air holdup, bubble size, residence time, hydrodynamics, froth depth, etc. For instance, the probability of collision is affected by many mechanical variables (bubble size, hydrodynamics, bubbles holdup etc.) but only one stream variable (particle size) has a major effect on it. On the other hand the probability of attachment is affected by much more stream variables: particle size, shape, liberation, surface composition, particle surface oxidation and collector coverage, Eh, pH, etc."

"Inco's Automated Haulage Truck System (AHT) is a revolutionary automatic guided vehicle that performs all load, haul and dump operations without human intervention. The high level of sophistication and the short period it has been in operation has only allowed a select few Inco personnel to become familiar with the ART operation and maintenance. As an aid to operations an expert system using the knowledge gained from the experienced specialists was implemented in the field.The AHT operating and maintenance assistance expert system will reason through the information given, arrive at conclusions and give advice to operations, technical and management personnel. It will provide comprehensive real-time troubleshooting assistance for the hydraulic, electrical and mechanical subsystems of the ART. The ART expert system has many benefits to Inco which include increased skill levels of ART operations and maintenance personnel, reduction in ART downtime, standardization of troubleshooting procedures and reduction in ART operating and maintenance costs. In the future, the expert system application will be linked to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), maintenance and statistical software to display current and historical trends of variables from a centralized historical database. As well, a wide variety of features will be integrated into the system including AutoCad drawings, graphics, photographs, voice and video capabilities."

"Data from two industrial plants are treated by mass balance package BILMAT. The first application concerned a base metals/precious metals (PM) producer and the second, implementation of a hydrocyclone for the recovery of iron chips in the granite industry. Also LOTUS 123 software can easily be adapted for laboratory test mass balances using an IBM-PC computer. INTRODUCTIONThe present paper deals with two different BILMAT program applications. The first application concerns a copper-zinc-gol d-sil Yer producer based in North-western Quebec and the second, concerns the iriplementation of a hydrocyclone for the recovery of iron chips in Quebec granite company.Afterwards, we deal with some LOTUS 123 software applications for laboratory test mass balances using an IBM-PC.1. Base metal and P.M. producerNoranda Inc, Mattagami division, which operates mines in North Western Quebec, produces copper and zinc concentrates from a sulphide ore. Small amounts of gold (0,34 g/t) and silver (20 g/tl are present. At the time of the study, only 30% of the silver content was recovered in the copper concentrate. The main objective of this study is, to evaluate the metallurgical behaviour of silver in the flotation circuits, to increase its recovery in the copper concentrate and therefore to improve its final economic value. It is then worthwhile to identify the silver bearing minerals and to determine the critical flotation stages where they are lost. The methodology proposed is based on the coupling of a mineralogical study and a detailed mass balance ca1cu1ation in the flotation circuit performed using the BILMAT mass balance package (1, 2, 3).The results are discussed with respect to the distribution of silver in the circuit. The recoveries obtained at the various separation stages for the minerals present in the ore are also discussed."
